Visual Arts, 2008.2

Whether your medium is traditional, digital, or in a realm of its own, if it’s visual (or you hope it will be one of these days), here’s a place to talk about it, dream about it, or share ideas, no matter if you’re an artist or not.

aw, the bunnies are adorable, Kagy! Super awesome drawings!

Whoa. I love the cornucopia, Nthanda, it looks so real. *wishes i could draw*

And I really like the sketch of the two people as well. *note to self, check out Nthanda’s book in progress*

Seriously, you guys both have wonderful talent!

    first post?

SFTDP……I especially like the drawing with the multiple bunnies attacking the girl in the green shirt. The bunny on her head is so adorable, as is the one spring at her. (yes, I’m crazy)

oh, and i’m an idiot…..how could it be first post when i’m replying to the first post? *whacks self upside the head*

Ag! *is nervous* My audition is this morning and I’m not sure how I’ll do—my portfolio is pretty good, I have a few good pieces in there, but I don’t know if I’ll be good enough on the on-site audition. We have to draw a pile of tools, and I’m not too good at that sort of style.

Wow, Kagy and Nthanda have super different styles. I love your stuff Nthanda, and Kagy, the bunnies are the best. Especially the bunny hat.

    Pie 0

  5. Good luck, THF! A little bit of nervousness isn’t bad — it keeps you alert. I’m sure you’ll do fine. Tell us all about it later.

5: Ha, I have bad luck. I have to wish for something bad to happen for something good to happen. One day in PE, Alfalfa, Frosting, and I ended up together for basketball, and I noted my bad luck. She said she had good luck, so we touched the edge of our fingers together. Right when we made contact, and did an explosion sound. Scared the wits outta her.

My piece of artsy stuff has been colored and will be sent in now!

  9. Kagcomix says:

Thanks guys. Thank you GAPAs. I was wondering when they’d be up.

Notes: The skin is patchy (and on the purple shirted one, white) because my scanner destroys colour. Seriously. They are much less patchy in my sketch book. The one in the purple shirt is simply a lighter skin colour than the other two. In the first on there were light blue shadows but like I said, my scanner destroys light colour. And the last picture with “Kagcomix 2008” was my original MB signature. But my scanner didn’t decide to work until after the deadline.

8- Sure! *sends imaginary jeans* In real life the HPB pattern would probably be beading or sequins.

  11. Tetrahydrofuran (THF) says:

5 – Fangs! The audition went quite well, I think. I drew a nice drawing of a pile of tools (very difficult, but I’m thinking it was actually a pretty good drawing), I had a nice and diverse-ish portfolio, and my essay… wasn’t horrible. The interview went pretty well, I showed them that I was a nice person, and got the chance to talk to them about the pieces in my portfolio—I didn’t have any 3-D stuff, which may have brought me down, but that’s all right.
Oh and if anyone cares, the on-site essay was comparing “Unique Forms of Continuity in Space” by Umberto Boccioni to “Study for the Libyan Sibyl” by Michelangelo. I accidentally interpreted the movement in that drawing as the opposite kind that it actually was, but that’s okay. Oh well, you know—I’ll just hope that the other things brought me through. Yeah, now that I think about it that essay was actually pretty darn crappy. Whatever.

Oh and I forgot to say—Nthanda, I love the cornucopia, it does look very real.

I should probably scan some of my portfolio in, shouldn’t I? Hm… maybe I’ll get around to that someday.

All of my water colors are really weird, I guess I could send them in but their not really of anything, their rather, uh abstract.
I love the pencil drawing. I’m not at all good with profiles but I love the look of them. *sulks* I’m not a crazy artist because everything I do is so abstract and comes to me in uh randome spurts.

Ahaha, oh yes, I was going to send in some photography a long time ago. Oops.

    These look great, everyone.

I haven’t drawn in forever. It makes me kind of sad. I used to really like drawing actual things (I occasionally still do abstract stuff in school notebooks, but even that not so much anymore : / ), but I haven’t done so in… I don’t even know how long. I was thinking abut painting one of the abstract things I did (we have some old small canvases/paints in the basement from Grandma’s) but then I realizrd I have nowhere near the time. :(

BUT I am going to be getting a nice camera for Christmas!! A DSLR if all goes well, which I am hoping… I like the Canon Rebel Xti (something like that) from what I’ve read online, but I haven’t had a chance to just handle one at a store or anything… I need to do that soon. Anyone have any input?

Gwyn, by my request, is drawing a “Museblog photo,” where all of us where called from various threads to have a picture taken. It’s getting quite long, and I think Lady B. will have to post a link instead. I think you can guess who ZVX, Beavo, Meow, RtH, and Aggie are, but she’s going to make you guys guess the rest. Some of you guys are quite hard, and I need to make her draw Beat, POSOC, and Alice next. Leafy used to be in there, but now I had her erase the emblem on her shirt to make her someone else (I’m not saying who!). But it looks rather strange to have someone other than Leafy be leaning up against me. And now things are healing a little with us, so I don’t know whether to let her come back or not. Maybe I’ll just have her erase that person and make someone else.

I really shouldn’t be discussing this sort of stuff on this thread, huh?

    8. Wow all of this is so good!

Yoda, I love your tree, it looks like some of the Tolkien illustrations–simple and elegant.
Kiwi, that bird is incredible! It must have taken you forever to do the fuzz on the head. I love its expression.
Tessera, the “dreamscape” picture is really cool–very surreal. I like how it’s all pretty concrete, except for the abstract-ish splotch on the side (which, by the way, looks exactly like a leafy sea dragon).
Agrrrfishi, the panda is sooo cute! I want to pick it up and give it a hug. And the chipmunk is awesome–really lifelike. I like the blue sky one too, it’s so neatly blended that it looks like it was airbrushed or something. Really nice work.
Kagcomix, your comics are so funny! I love the second one especially, particularly the “their loss” line, ha ha!

    Whew…I think that’s everyone.

I always draw “better” when I’m copying somebody else’s lines (not tracing, but looking back and forth between my version and the original) then drawing my own. I’m better at 2-D stuff (more cartooning, I guess?) then anything 3-D. I’ll have a 3-D picture in my head but then it comes out totally flat or completely odd-looking when I try to put it on the paper.

Not that that’s a bad thing, I guess. It’s just my own style.

Has anyone here heard of woot.com? Or I guess shirt.woot.com?
Woot! sells one single item every day at a bargain. Shirt.woot sells one t-shirt (only one design, and up to three shirts per person) designed by a lone artist every day.
Well Shirt.Woot! has these derbies. The derby is woot!’s “weekly design competition, where users submit their own design ideas to a public vote, and we produce and sell the three most popular designs.” It gives you a theme, and then you submit your design. All the woot! members vote on their favorites, and the three winners get printed. And $1000, but that’s secondary. Isn’t that awesome?
    So try it out, people.

  166. (164, 165) How you hold a paint brush isn’t about rules per se, it’s about allowing yourself enough freedom of movement to make the kinds of strokes you wish to make. There is not one correct way, any more than there is one correct style of painting. Mostly you’re just trying to stay out of your own way — which for most of us is not an easy thing to do, I might add. The paintbrush is an instrument, not unlike a piano or a fiddle. If you don’t learn the skills you can’t follow your vision when it beckons.

167- Time doesn’t necessarily make the outcome of an image more pleasing to the eye.

    Pie 0
    Squid 0
  168. There is a difference between art and making art. Confusing the two has induced many a potential artist to stash ens art materials in the back of the closet.

Another thought on paintbrushes (yes, it’s an obsession of mine right up there with “student grade” artists materials).

An English teacher I knew once mentioned that after observing students over the years, she’d concluded that one reason so many people hate to write is that they don’t know how to hold a pen or pencil comfortably. They twist around like a contortionist or clutch the pen in a death grip, so that the physical act of writing becomes unpleasant and fatiguing.

I see something similar in art students. They want to hold the brush as if it were a pencil, their arms are tight against their sides, their movement is constrained to their wrists and fingers. You might as well try to type wearing mittens.

  169. Nthanda the Laugher says:

Does anyone have any information on how to learn about the ‘rules’ of art and design? Things like balance and color. My art class is seriously lacking.

    Pie 0
    Squid 0
  191. (192) Hard to know where to start. One place I can think of off the top of my head is handprint.com. (Start on handprint.com/HP/WCL/water.html) The site is geared towards watercolors, but it covers a lot of other territory about color theory, composition, perspective, and other aspects of design.

You might start with the section called “format proportions” (handprint.com/HP/WCL/tech11.html) to see if the author’s style of explanation works for you.

The site was put together by a guy named Bruce MacEvoy, who apparently made some money in the early dot.com era, then decided to tackle art. He did some meticulous research on everything from paint pigments to color theory and was generous enough to share.

The site can be aggravating at times, because he hasn’t written some of the more tantalizing articles. His technical approach may be overwhelming for some people, but I found it refreshing and much more practical than a lot of stuff out there. Reading his essays on color theory, vision, and light were truly transformative for me.

    Thanks!
That’s exactly what I’ve been looking for. Art class is great, but I don’t feel liken I’m learning any lessons, just wandering by trial and error, into what looks good and what doesn’t. I suppose that’s what most of life’s learning is like though.
Haha, that was quite an expansive question.

    Pie 0
    Squid 0
  193. (194) You’re welcome. Let me know how it goes.

One never escapes the trial and error, but the right kind of information can help you move it to a more productive — and interesting — level. Learning how to think about how art is constructed and how the mind perceives it goes a long way towards building intuition.

Another book I found especially helpful was “Vision and Art: the Biology of Seeing” by Margaret Livingstone. Much of the book is simply fun — optical illusions and how artists have made use of them. She also has a technical section on how our eyes interpret the world. While it’s not a guide to design in the usual sense, I find that the more I understand about how human vision works, the better decisions I can make over such questions as what to leave out, how to guide the eyes where I want them to go, and so on.

Keep us informed as to how it goes.
I understand the frustration with art classes. Except for a sculpture class in college and portrait painting courses I took on my own, I didn’t get much by way of useful instruction.

I like art classes because they give me a chance to experience all mediums. I’m really excited for next year because I’m taking more specialized courses (drawing&painting and life drawing). My computer made the picture blurry, so it’s difficult to see, but I’m planning on replacing the buffalos in the distance with a small battle scene and I’m going to replace the stars with incoming clouds resembling the battle with a sunrise.
