Wonderful picture Rebecca! I do so love stained glass. Looking at the picture…I think I’d like to hear some astronomy from kaiyves, if that’s alright!

Hmm international Discovery and Exploration…Trying to think of something to add.
oh I know! In Japan there is a “Tokyo Tower” modeled after the Eiffel Tower. It is (I think intentionally) taller than the Eiffel tower by 9 meters.

I have a lot of homework today.

  17. Exploration and discovery come in many varieties. Exploring the sky through a telescope seems completely benign. Microscopes, too, haven’t hurt anyone as far as I know. And I’ve explored numerous bookstores and made many discoveries in them without torturing anyone or driving anyone to extinction. (Speaking of which, has anyone seen the movie Inkheart? I saw it last night and would be interested in hearing what MBers think of it.)

Besides, almost all of the indigenous peoples in the world had to do some exploring and discovery to wind up where they did. The aborigines in Australia, the islanders of the Pacific, the Native Americans — all were products of amazing migrations.

I was in Washington DC again yesterday, our friend had a tour around the American History museum (for some friends from living history) and then we went to the National Gallery of Art and talked about the 18th century pieces (mostly the costume in the portraits) for awhile. ‘Twas great fun, having a bunch of living history enthusiasts in a museum is incredibly interesting and amusing, you’re bound to learn something, even if it’s not exactly something you wanted to know…

17 — I never read the book and went to see it for laughs mostly (I expected it to be hilarious like the Eragon movie and so on) but I didn’t really like it that much. I liked some of the ideas, and it was a bit more thoughtful than most children’s fantasy type plots. It was okay, I suppose. Neither here nor there.

A movie that I did like was Vicky Cristina Barcelona, which I watched last night. On that topic, what movies has everyone seen recently? I’ve seen all of the Best Picture nominations except for The Reader (which I would really like to see). I liked Benjamin Button at the time but the more I thought about it the less I liked it. There are still so many movies I’d like to see.

I also agreed to play…….*fanfare* an ORIGINAL SONG. In addition to whatever covers I can play. Again, I restate: BLAARG. It’s not like I really don’t want to do it (if that was the case, I’d cancel it), it’s just that I don’t know how I’ll do it. So far, I have a pretty good idea of what I’m actually going to play: American Pie, I’m a Believer, We Will Rock You (actually doesn’t involve the guitar, but oh well), maybe We Can Work It Out. The original song part is what is freaking me out.

Kept half expecting it to end like the short horror story of similar beginnings does, but I won’t say if it does or not. wouldn’t want to spoil it.

The last movie I saw was “No Such Thing.”

My mother made me walk to Safeway to buy lemonade and frozen blueberries. What she didn’t know was that I hadn’t eaten for five or six hours, and I’d just had a soda, so I was bound to crash soon. Also Safeway doesn’t seem to stock frozen blueberries, so I was wandering around, unable to walk in a straight line or really concentrate on anything, boiling mad at my mother for making do this (only because it was on my sister’s behalf) and mad at my sister for being such an ingrate and a useless lump. I’m still horribly lightheaded and depressed because all that time I was using to walk to and around Safeway was the time I’d meant to use to hide the notes for Eva’s treasure hunt and now I can’t do that today.

There’s my rant for today. Good bye.

  49. Ankou says:

I am not new here. I am familiar. I mention this so as to not seem someone who comes here to complain. This is a one-shot, I will not appear in this name here ever again.

I am very sad. It seems to me as though the forces of the universe do not want me to be happy. My default mood is a state of depression. Briefly I will find something that makes me smile or laugh, or at the very least boost me up to a feeling of neutrality. It remains, however, that I inevitably return to sadness. I have felt this way for quite some time; I do not believe that I have been truly happy in over 2 years.

This weekend, I had hoped to confess to the girl of whom I am particularly fond that I have a crush on her. A quite complicated set of circumstances, each less likely than the prior, prevented me, and as such, I shan’t be able to see her in person for at least 5 months. I would tell her via telephone, email, or letter, but my respect for her is such that I feel she deserves to be told in person.

I shall not delve further into my troubles, I merely wished to give an example of one of the metaphorical bitch-slaps which fate delivers me on a semi-regular basis. Continuing on, I wish to express my qualms about these feelings I have. Perhaps it is my lot simply to be sad. Perhaps I do not deserve happiness. (I certainly do not deserve the wonderful people whom I have the honour to call friends. I tell them this but I am not believed.) Deep down, I believe that I am a truly miserable and despicable excuse for a human being. Were it not for the quantity of people who it would bring emotional harm, I would destroy myself readily.

    Pie 0
    Squid 0
  50. Luna the Lovely says:

49–I really don’t know how to put this, but….In my unprofessional opinion, you sound depressed–clinically depressed. You need to talk to someone–and not just people online, no matter how good of friends we might be. A trusted adult, a good friend. And I feel i should stress the following: No matter how horrible, how depressed you might feel, how much it might feel like the entire universe is against you, things are not as bad as they seem, and they are definitely not so bad that you should even contemplate suicide in the abstract.

We’re here for you, but you really need to talk to somebody in person. *hugs*

  51. (49) Ankou, happiness springs from strange places, often ones we don’t expect, and it simply doesn’t care whether anyone deserves it or not.

But you don’t deserve to feel so sad either.

I have, at many times in my life, also believed I was a miserable, despicable excuse for a human being. But that is a trick of the mind, the power of emotions. It is a voice that is lying to you to keep you in the darkness.

I concur with Luna about finding help. Depression requires too much heavy lifting for one person to handle. We GAPAs often say “don’t ask me how I know this.” In this case, however, I can tell you how I know this. I have been in the exact place you describe; however, I didn’t have a name for it when I was Muser age and I didn’t go out and start to get real help until I was decades older. I’m still catching up on all the opportunities I lost because I waited so long.

Even so, I’m glad I stuck around. When I was 16, I believed there was nothing ahead but blackness. That was a lie created by the chemistry of my mind. Life has had its zigs and zags since, but it has truly been worth living in ways I couldn’t possibly have imagined then.

Reading your post though, I saw more than just a lack of hope. Your writing is clear and bright, you can convey emotion with skill. Even your name (I research everyone’s name) is sad, yes, but fantastic: it proves that you value meaning, history, and the far larger world.
I only know what I see in this snatch (a wonderful word that, apparently, can also mean a snead, or handle of a scythe. Ankou knows of that, for sure the tools we use with mastery are the ones we know best. As to you, writing is clearly a tool worthy of admiration.) of writing, what I do see is a person. A real person. A person who sees, feels, cares, and relates. You have more than so many others simply because you can see vividly and tell clearly.

59-Lol, I burn couches when my team wins.

Actually, I forgot it was the Superbowl. We got 3D glasses for free in school which I took MySpace pictures with, and then put them away so I could prepare for Candlemass.

BTW, today was Candlemass, or Imbolic, or the celebration of St. Bridgit, the saint of fire, light, and whatever else. I had so much fun! I’ll ramble about it on the Religon thread if you want to hear more about what I did.

49-Wow, that was… wow. You kind of sound like me a year ago, except I thought I was for real and now I realize that I was pathetic and an attention you-know-what. You actually sound real. I really don’t know what to say, except that I know the feeling of not ever feeling truly happy, which has significantly improved in the last year. Advice: find someone special enough to share your life with (and not even like a girlfriend, maybe just a best friend), it can really lift weights off your shoulders, and you can have fun in life without always being down about something else. Or nothing, just the feeling suffocating depression.

I’ve believed that I’m worth nothing, and like Rebecca said, it’s a total voice. Those inner arguments that I’m guessing happen a lot where you end up thinking you deserve to die? That voice is an ass, don’t listen to it. Yeah, I sound like I don’t know what I’m talking about, but that’s the voice that prompted most of my friends to self-harm, go annorexic, whatever else. It’s a liar, it’s a demon, it’s not YOU. It might seem like it’s your concience telling you what a horrible person you are, but it’s not. I still get the voice, actually, which is about the point where I pick up the phone and call someone who values me more than I value myself. The beleif that you’re worthless is created by the demon of your mind, whose only intention is to get you into that state of mind.

Other than a strong group of supportive friends (or maybe even one you can call whenever), I’d take Rebecca’s suggestion on professional help. She said everything I could say about that except that some are idiots and some are good, make sure you find the right one.

Sometimes getting attention may make you feel like you don’t deserve it, and in some people they can’t get enough of it and start being “depressed” because they have no other way of getting attention. I was one of the latter. Don’t be like me, but don’t avoid attention and sympathy and advice from friends/professionals simply because you feel like you’re being egotistic.

And get lots of hugs. *portablehug* Whenever you need more, we’re here.

56~ Eighth notes are fun! To answer your question about going from B to G, it’s not that hard once you get used to it. Keep your first finger (B) down, and place your other fingers on the D string to play the next note (a third finger G). Describing it here is weird, but eventually it will become second nature to you. It’s when you have to miss one whole string and change position while playing 16th notes that you have to worry about. ;) But that’s a way off still…..

71~ Shifting into positions is when you put your index finger (first finger) down where the other, higher fingers go. It’s weird, difficult and infuriating but helpful for stratospheric notes that couldn’t be reached otherwise (to the relief of all within earshot, I might add) and sometimes it makes playing certain passages easier to avoid awkward string changes. It’s a ways off for a beginner though, so don’t worry. :)

71 Ah, no those are probably the names of the notes on each string. Scales are a series of notes all in the same Key. A Key is the number of sharps of flats in the music.
This is probably very confusing. Let me try again.
The music you probably play now is in the key of C. The key of C has no sharps and no flats. A C scale goes from C to C, using all the natural (no #, no â™) notes in between.
Shifting is moving your hand from first position. You know one spot to put your hand in, right? Well, there are more than eight others.

D was the first scale I learned on cello too, but I wasn’t sure if violin is weird like that too. I first played a one octave D scale starting on open D, (the second string) to fourth finger D on the A sting (my first string, clearly.)
Next came G, then C, and A later, because it requires extensions. Then I didn’t learn any for a while until I found a private teacher.
What I don’t understand is why the C scale isn’t taught first, because (on the ‘cello at least) one could play a once octave C scale with the same fingering as D (01340134), just starting two strings lower. I know wind instruments begin with flats, but it doesn’t make any sense why one wouldn’t start with the most basic scale.
Music theory was hard for me, and still is, I think because I never really learned the basics.

Although I believe grammar should always be followed in most any situation, I don’t see the point of these overly-strict rules which do not actually exist. It’s more of a philosophical than a physical list. If this is true, who’s to say that I am not allowed to modify the list? Why can’t I add words as I see fit and not need to integrate them into our common psychology?

  93. (92) Well, if you study linguistics (which I heartily recommend), you’ll see that English spelling and grammar have evolved in rather messy ways. People would be surprised to know that many of the constructions that pedants wring their hands over today were as vociferously argued two or three centuries ago.

A fair amount of what is deemed proper arose from the prejudices of the groups who had the power to insist their regional dialects were the correct ones. Before some time around the late mediaeval, early modern period people really didn’t give much attention to such distinctions.

Anyway, new topic, one not revolving around my annual three-month illness: I spent the evening on IMDb looking at the various actors various people have suggested for various roles in JS&MN. There were a few good suggestions for Strange (including Ioan Gruffudd, but I shall always think of him as Hornblower and no one else), and I liked the idea of Tilda Swinton as the Gentleman (yes, I know she’s a girl! But she could pull it off anyway; she’s played guys before). No good Norrells, a couple decent Childermasses (maybe) and very little info on anyone else. In my opinion, they should get a bunch of obscure English actors whom no one has heard much about (I’m sure England’s swarming with marvelous actors who never get cast), and make a BBC miniseries about it, if they make it all. I rather hope that they won’t. Actually I hope they’ll make up their mind about it. It’s not a good idea, but if they must do it, say so! The fans are waiting in suspense!
Also a great many people suggested Johnny Depp for various roles. I say NO!

84- Oh, I feel your pain. Literally, mine still hurt from monday although I did manage to eat an apricot without copious grimacing today, things are looking up :D

I started volunteering in a rest home today for Duke of Edinburgh. Wow. Never go to a rest home. It was horrible, all the carers talked to the elderly like they were 3 years old for goodness sake! Like, when a man didn’t like the food they said (with all sincerity, but sounding obviously demeaning ((not the right word, can’t think of it right now, but demeaning will do- like talking down to someone))) ” Your tastebuds are not working, they will be better soon” goshh…rude much? and then when some of the elderly wanted the gravy poured out of the bowl the carer said to me “picky old ********s” realllly rude!!!

I was pretty taken aback, but there is some concern about this kind of stuff happening on a MUCH worse scale in rest homes throughout NZ. On the bright side my South African friend/ elderly person carer for taught me how to peel oranges. And chop them into mush…I don’t think that they were MEaNT to be mush but mine ended up that way.

GAPAs: By my name on the Whos Here (I was reading through all that stuff looking for info about Wungs, to not much avail, can some one help me? What are they?) there is a male/female sign (can’t remember which) the ones with circles and an arrow or a cross on them…what does it mean? Why is it only on a few people? Why am I one of them?

This is weird. Last night was weird. I woke up at 3:43 and lay there staring at the clock for what seemed like hours but was actually only four minutes. I would close my eyes and go to sleep, then open them again to find that the time hadn’t changed at all. At one point I dreamed that it was six-thirty and I got up and went to school, then I opened my eyes and it was only five, and the thought of playing violin with this headache was torture.

Oh, and our car got rear-ended on Tuesday when we were going to rehearsal. The person behind us at the light sped up for yellow and we slowed down, so there was a big crash and Mom called the cops. The other woman freaked out and started crying hysterically when she found out Mom was on the phone with 911. So we were obviously late, and my left shoulder still hurts from being thrown forward. It was so funny though, when I got in I was like, “Hi, sorry I’m late, we got rear-ended” and the director was like, “OK, it’s fine, you’ll have to share a script with some– wait, YOU GOT REAR-ENDED?? 118~ I thought you’d get a kick out of that, being both banjo and concertina player. Just be careful if you ever get a hankering to make one yourself!

134~ Actually, it’s a Anglo system concertina….the point is that it’s most emphatically not a banjo, as the kit advertises. It’s just amusing.

124~ Hi again! *hugs and then pies*

Well. It’s cold today and that’s pretty much all there is to be said. I’m still reading the Hornblower books, up to book 5! ♥ ♥ ♥ I’m hopeless.
Hum. On Sunday is the concert and I managed to get a seat right next to my friend’s and they’ve said they’d take me, this is good. This means that I don’t have to have my mom (who doesn’t like the band) take me, or my dad (who thinks they’re funny and indulges in “tourist behavior” when he is in situations out of the norm. Groan). So, that’s good.
And on Monday I go to get a physical exam to attch to my application for becoming a trainee on the brig Niagara on Lake Erie this summer. *hopes desperately* I REALLY REALLY REALLY REALLY REALLY REALLY REALLY want to go. *continues to hope desperately* I also really hope I can take a concertina on board with me. I could probably tear myself away from at least one instrument for 4 weeks, but from both would be torturous indeed. And, since the concertina is the smaller, cheaper (mine’s a cheapie) and less likely to fall apart on a ship (I don’t even want to think how tuning my violin would be; HORROR) that’ll probably have to be the one to come with me. Sadness. I know I sound pathetic, but not playing an instrument for a month (even if you’re relatively good) is hard. Not just because you miss it but when you get back you have to build up stamina again and get your fingers going. Ugh. It’s like going way backwards….not good at all. *sigh* But I suppose it’ll have to be endured. After all, I’ll be sailing on a tall ship!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Now they’re a veritable riot of color with like twenty patches. They’re amazing.

I’ve been meaning to make it wearable for a while now, and the night before last I needle-felted a twisty sort of tree up the side in light brown wool. Then I started to hem it with bias tape. I still need to make a lining and I want to embroider dark green in the center of the branches.

174–I really don’t think it is all that particularly much harder for a non-US citizen to get into a US college. I mean, where I’m attending, there are quite a few foreign students (I often see/hear various orientals–chinese, mainly, I think–as well as Indian–as in, from India–and there are probably pelnty of others I just haven’t noticed). For one thing, being from out of country could easily be beneficial to getting accepted, as school’s seem to be all about diversity. And of course, depending on the sort of school that you’re looking at (as in, a specialized something, like, say, music performance, or a more general broader sort of school; or state school vs. private school) the criteria for anyone varies. State schools, I think, tend to generally accept more or less anyone who applies, where as private colleges are probably more selective, but I think again, whatever criteria they are going off of are not county of citizenship, but rather academic & other criteria.

Of course, you would have to pay out of state tuition! (great fun, that…….no clue if it is more for out of country than merely out of state, kinda doubt it, but you never know…..)

181–ah, ok. I stand (sit) corrected. I guess they probably are more competitive than I generally think of them as being.

I would say however, Elwing, that if, when it comes time to apply, you still want to attend a US school, then apply to those that you are interested in, but also apply to a university in New Zealand that you would be fine with going to, if you weren’t accepted to the others.

Anyway, it probably depends on the school how competitive they are……

February is Random Thread: International Month of Exploration and Discovery, Part 1! Astronomers, sailers, and scientists rejoice!

    Museica Anthem Contest Declared!
After the almost dying-out of the thread, TMFA has made an attempt to rejuvenate the thread with the contest to decide the surprisingly non-existent anthem. Aggrfishi has entered on based on the US of As, and POSOC has tried but found a bad case of writers block. Participate at https://musefanpage.com/blog/?p=1469 .

    Smilies Replaced!

Unexpectedly, people had debated on the HG2MB thread ( https://musefanpage.com/blog/?p=1325 ) about replacing the arrow, the question mark, and/or the exclamation point smiley. It was finally decided that :?: would represent the wung, since, in Rainbowstars words, no one knows what they look like. The exclamation point and the question mark were replaced by :!: and  , drawn by Piggy. MBers love them, as bookgirl_me states, Wow ! I love the pies !

    Word of the Day: Poetry

On the Poems and Songs thread ( https://musefanpage.com/blog/?p=1602 ), Aggie has made a trend with poetry by finding a word on a dictionary website, and using it in a poem. Following in her footsteps are two other poets- Nthanda the Laugher and Zinc the sorceress. So far, the word charter is:
Aggie: Virtuoso, unwitting, erstwhile, and denigrate.
    Nthanda: Clepe.
    Zinc: Extraneous and rictus.

149~ That’s so funny, so you have a picture of the very ship I plan to spend time on this summer. *twilight zone music plays* Funny also that you drew a picture of it….the screen saver of my cell phone is a drawing I made from a picture. (None of the photos I had fit the screen properly.)

I’ve been plowing my way through the Hornblower series, I’m on the…..fifth. I think. Moms two books ahead of me and gaining, drat. After I finish the series I really must get myself back into some semblance of discipline again. (hah) I’ve not been getting much schoolwork done (with both my mom and I thoroughly buried in books) it’s not really been helping with my, ah, “scholastic progress”. Not the best situation since I’ll have to do work through the summer in order to get closer to my grade in some subjects (*cough math cough*) and if I’m gone for a month that means I’m going to have to do even more in less time. *groan*
But I want to read the Patrick O’Brian books, I’ve not read them before. *sigh* Of course, if I want nautical themes I should apply myself to The Arts of the Sailor, The Rigger’s Apprentice and Seamanship in the Age of Sail, preferably with extra time and cordage at hand. Perhaps a needle and palm and marlinspike.
Oh yes, must get myself a marlinspike and rigger’s knife……perhaps we can get the forge going sometime, that would be good. I’ve wanted to make a knife for some time now, and we have a pattern for a rigger’s knife. (Flat blade, wider at the top, blunt and with a small point that acts as a ripper. They put my jackknife to shame.)

167~ It’s so cool that you have dances in your area. *jealous*
Your sewing projects sound fun, reminds me of how I improved a pair of my jeans. Let me first say that I hate straight leg jeans, I much prefer flare style jeans. So, I got a pair that fit perfectly, except they were straight and too long (I’m vertically challenged). So, I cut the bottoms off, unsewed the outside seams and used the trimmings from the bottom to make triangular pieces to make them flared. I sewed them with purple embroidery floss on the outside, so they look quite nice. I have another pair that may be beyond saving, since most of the seat is so thin one could almost poke their finger through it. *sigh* But they’re my favorites! I shoudl probably let them go though, since I’ve had them since I was about 11 or 12. (5 years ago O.o)

    (Please forgive the double post)

170~ Wow. If my parents replaced my clothing every time it got ripped or stained we’d be clothes shopping every day of the week (horror). I can manage to mess up my clothing even when I’m not doing anything that one would think dirty or liable to rip fabric, and when I do more than read, practice and eat the risks go even higher. I’m hopeless.

Today was entirely lovely, it got up to 60 degrees (F) and I had my door open all day (still open, in fact, but it’s still all nice and warm). We did laundry, loads and loads of it, which too all day, since we don’t have a dryer (grr) and therefore have to hang each garment on the line. When that gets too full (or we run out of clothespins) we have to take down what’s dried and out up more. And shuffle baskets of clean, dirty and wet laundry from the house to the wash house (aka my room), and on muddy days like today it means that my room now has the deposits from several pairs of muddy boots tromping in and out all day. *sigh*
but because we had flurries of activity every 50 minutes or so we took today to read in between loads, so that’s pretty much all we did. do laundry, read and eat chocolate. Not a bad day, in all. ;)

And tomorrow is the concert. And the day after that is the physical exam. And the day after that I can (hopefully) send in my application to the Niagara. And next month we’ll go back to Jamestown for Military Through the Ages which is an awesome event and I’m completely looking forward to it except for two things. One, it will make me all sad because I want to be camping and wearing my own clothes (I refuse to call them “costumes” That makes it sound like I’m a clown or something, they’re clothes.) Besides, I like 18th century woman’s clothes, they’re so lovely and mine are made to fit me, not like the one’s that I have provided for interpreting in. I mean, they fit, but they weren’t made specifically for my body, and historical dress really does need to be made individually to get the best possible fit. Well, all clothes should be, but don’t get me started on a rant…..
And second, I know that the next time we go down I’m going to have to give Dennis back his violin. He was so very kind in letting me take it home to play with, and I have my own lovely instrument that I will be glad to play regularly again, but I’ll miss it. :( It feels nice to play and has a good sound. So does mine, but they’re all so individual, it’s like different friends.
But I am looking forward to March.
And then April! Whee! Market Fair at the fort and I get to see all my friends again and play music until I drop and probably do the Beggar’s Opera again once or twice. *bliss* I can’t wait!

Three months in advance is enough to talk about now, so I’ll off the check other threads and leave this very long post to the long suffering GAPAs to moderate. (Sorry all!)

188~ We might have a Morris group or something in a nearby town, but I can safely say that I’d probably have to go at least 45 minutes away. You also need to realize that I have to go other places for ships and living history events, they’re not all in my backyard….or back woods, which might be more appropriate…
I have to go 6 hours to VA for ships, and 45 min. to the F&I fort. Other events and things are often further away.
The town I live in is actually pretty small on interesting things to do.

  192. Midnight Fiddler (she of 2 spzdk, 500 PiePoints and 30 Muszey points) says:

191~ Ships: there’s the Maryland Dove in St. Mary’s city, MD which is a few hours away, but we go to Jamestown Settlement because we have a friend we stay with there while we volunteer as costumed interpreters on the ships (my mom and I do this). We’ve never been sailing though, because they mostly have dockside interpretation and don’t go sailing that often. Also, there’s some friction between interpretive and sailing staff, which is too bad because I think they could both learn a lot from each other.
There’s also the USS Constellation in Baltimore (maybe an hour or so away) which is lovely, but doesn’t sail. There’s maintenance, and I know that they make sure the people working on her know what they’re talking about as far as ships and Navy goes, but I’d like to sail. Although, I’m interested in joining (someday) a group that does some things with that ship. So who knows?
There’s also the Kalmar Nyckle in Delaware that’s several hours away but sails regularly. We might be looking into that, I’m not sure, but Mom sounded interested. Of course, there’s the Niagara, but that’s a ways away too.
There are others that I haven’t looked into as thoroughly yet, but hope to sometime.

Living history: I must admit that I live in an area where there’s a lot of local history from different time periods, Antietam battlefield (one of the bloodiest battles in history) was fought not too far away form where I live, and soldiers retreated over the creek I live on. Also, there’s a French and Indian War fort (the “fort” I’m always talking about) 45 minutes or so away that I’ve been doing things at since forever. Then there’s Ft. McHenry in Baltimore from the War of 1812…..so, I’m inn an area that’s got a lot of history anyway, but finding a group that you can do things with shouldn’t be too hard. I know you’re interested in colonial era, which unfortunately there isn’t much of in Washington. (Maryland was the “frontier” back then….) However, there’s bound to be other enthusiasts, even if it’s there’s not a lot of local history from that time period. I’d recommend looking up the National Rendezvous and Living History Foundation, I think they have some events in the northwest. Mind you, rendezvous isn’t always (in fact, it’s rather rarely) very historically correct, but it might be a starting point if you know what to look for and are willing to do some independent research and not believe everything people will tell you about how to do a historical impression. I think you’d be able to tell pretty well though.
Living history people love to talk, so just ask them questions and they’ll probably take you in with open arms. Or you could come out to the East……. ;)

However, whether we get ash at our house is really kind of dependent upon the direction of the wind at the time and the height of the ash plume. We’ve got fire drills and lockdown drills. They haven’t done a true tornado drill, just told us we’re supposed to all (that is, all eight floors) cram ourselves into the basement, so that we are all packed like sardines against each other. Sounds like great fun.

Then, since school started in August, we’ve had two fire drills and two lockdowns. In the lockdowns, we all are supposed to lock ourselves into the nearest rooms (such as our dorms) until we’re allowed to come out, and yeah, lovely fun.

  243. Tesseract says:

We’ve got fire drills, tornado drills, and lockdown drills. I don’t think we’ve actually ever had a real fire situation, but we had a 45-minute long tornado warning when I was in third grade, and another in kindergarten. I distinctly recall crouching under a table in the hallway being told a story to keep my friends and me from getting scared.
We’ve had a few emergencies that they don’t prepare us for as well; in 5th grade, there was a gas leak in the school and we all evacuated. Also, about a month ago we had a bomb threat at school. I was sitting in French class and all of a sudden a panicked-sounding woman came on the PA system and said something along the lines of, “Everyone evacuate to your zones ASAP!” No one really knew what was going on for a good half hour, and they brought in dogs to check the school. It turned out everything was clear.
We’ve also had several lockdowns, but I can’t remember the circumstances. I do remember being squished into a minuscule space for a decent chuck of time, though.
One thing that has always struck me as enormously stupid about lockdowns is the “warning system.” If everyone in the classroom is safe, you put a green piece of paper in the window and outside the door in the hallway; if someone is missing or injured you put a red piece of paper in the same locations. Now, correct me if I’m wrong, but I had thought that the point of a lockdown was to get people away from the windows and doors so that the murderer or whoever wouldn’t know that they were there. I don’t see how a large, unnaturally placed piece of paper effectively declaring “we are here and vulnerable” achieves this.

Not suprising, really; we here on the coast (?) are going to get turned into a peninsula one day, cause of the Pacific plate and the North American plate messing around. And speaking of earthquakes, we had a noticeable one the other day. Just a slight tremble. Nothing much.

We have to create a restaurant for CORE, so I’m calling mine “The Flying Pastry.” (I was going to name it the Hare and Hedgepig, but I didn’t create that one, did I?) The menu consists entirely of pies. (CHOKLIT CREME.)

That was amazingly fun, and completely terrified Muffy, who refused to come further towrds the center where the bounce was higher. I’m not sure if anyone noticed, but a lot of the screaming and cheering came from really close to our seats….erm, I mean the seats where my evil twin and her friends were sitting………wheee! My hands are actually bruised from clapping. That’s incredible, because I so rarely bruise at all, to have even light purple blotches is very surprising.

260–sleep. I want sleep. I’ve been up since 6:45, and i have a splitting headache, and the last thing I want to be doing right now is revising my English paper, and trying to expand a paragraph in my argument that I’m not really even sure I agree with, and was planning on ediiting out for my final draft, but which my teacher commented on as being an “excellent point” but to discuss more. So now i feel obligated to keep in in, and……I don’t know what to do with it.

And I’ve nto gotten enough sleep any of the past few nights. Or all semester, really. Fri night: forget when i went to bed (after 10), then had to get up at 6:45 because our floor was going to the zoo, and meeting at 7:45. Sat night: I was up until 1:30 mostly doing school, then was up the next morning at 9:30, because I needed to be awake and presentable by 12:30, as well as get some stuff done. (It takes a couple hours fro me to be presentable–not to get ready, but for the black and purple bags under my eyes to disappear, and me to look normal, and not like I just crawled out of bed). To be fair, this is true regardless of how much sleep I get, it’s not just because I underslept. Last night: close to midnight before I got to bed (school, mainly) and then up at 6:45 for an 8 o’clock class. Tonight: well, pretty obvious, will be at least midnight, and the up at 8:15. School sucks.
