Wow, a new random thread without any requests! I think.

Well, I have a completely insane schedule for next year… does anyone think I’m overloading?

By the way, I’m frightened by the picture.

And I just had a sudden impulse to bite into a bar of soap.

That is a disturbing discovery…..Super cool picture, Lady B! Although I’m rather partial to the one of Urania on the other thread…..The colors and everything, so beautiful and incredible. It was my desktop background for awhile, until I switched over to an adorable picture of my cat. I miss you, Gandalf!!!!!!!!!!!!! *sniffle*

2–I definitely to not recommend soap–it tastes very bad. Although, if you do have a desire for soap taste, I recommend, instead of a bar of soap, that you try a soap flavored Bertie Bott bean instead.

SFTDP–in my post 6, I mean “definitely do not recommend soap” not “to not recommend soap”. I’ve been up too long, after not getting enough sleep last night. And still ahve 17 pages to read for English, and it’s ten to midnight, and I have to get up at 6:45. School sucks.

Now I want to bite a bar of soap! Real soap doesn’t taste as good as jelly bean soap though. maybe because it makes more sense to eat a soap jelly bean? boy am I ever tired right now

kokonilly, I agree, if you find that it is too much for you, don’t feel bad about scaling back a bit. It helps if you know your strengths and weaknesses, and what is a reasonable workload for you.

9–So, I heard the fires were started by arsonists……Is that true? Because that is just horrible–I don’t understand why anyone would do something like that.

Anyway, I am SO TIRED right now. I didn’t get to sleep until 12:45, what with all the various readings I had to do for classes today. And then up at 6:45, so the most sleep i got was 6 hrs (and given how quickly I fell asleep, that’s probably not that far off). but I am truly so tired that if I spend even just a couple minutes sitting still and not doing anything, I could honestly fall asleep, I hate homework and early morning classes. I didn’t appreciate last semester near as much as I should’ve–most of the late nights last semester were not due to having tons of stuff to do, but rather I felt like staying up and having some “fun” time doing something for myself (like watching tv on my computer). This semester I feel slammed all the time, and am definitely not getting anywhere near enough sleep. I’m literally almost falling asleep typing this. Not good.

Well, anyway, I better stop babbling and go brush my hair, so that I will be ready to leave in 15 minutes…..

This new project involves everyone in the class presenting once a week (it’s an ongoing current events project), so we’re going to be moving even more slowly starting soon.

25~ I have a music stand but I use it as a storage space instead of how it’s intended. What I do instead is sit on my bed, with one leg pulled up partway under me, the other off the side with my music propped up against the fiddle case. Works like a charm for me (my bed is rather low though, knee height). You might also try setting the case on a table and propping the music on that.
Or you could buy a music stand….. ;)

Soap: It is pretty, especially the rounded ones smooth bars, they always look so….I dunno, elegant and nice. Mmmmmm. And they smell good and feel nice to roll around in your hands when they’re brand new and still dry because they’re so smooth. Okay, that sounded weird. Soap is nice.

27- -snort- -giggle- BED? That would require getting to it, wouldn’t it? Well, that rules out that option… My bed is low, though. At first I just had a mattress on the floor but then I got a bed frame. Only then the slats for it were too small so I strung the whole thing really tight with twine and put my mattress on that, and then when it got loose I’d just take off my mattress and tighten it up. This also allowed air to circulate under my bed so it didn’t mildew. Unfortunately, after about two months of sleeping on it, the string became incredibly weak and began to give way at the slightest provocation, so I just let it all break until my mattress slid to the floor. I’m too lazy to fix it, and we’re moving soon anyway…

Then, for the opposite reason I did the Potter books (I did them cuz they’re awesome, I did twilight…..the first three, anyway)

    1. for some reason “eyes” is the largest, with Edward, voice, back, like, asked, and face close behind…..

    2. I’d have to say Jacob for this one, followed by Edward only slightly smaller, then like, with eyes a little behind that. (What’s with all the eyes???????)

Cart riding is best done in a deserted parking lot with a slight angle for gaining speed. That way you can jump off if it goes too fast without the worry that the cart will hurtle into someone or their car. (No, I don’t know this from experience.) Hmm. I’m superstitious about some things. I don’t say the name of the Scottish play onstage or even offstage, because then I usually end up slipping and saying it in the theater. I don’t walk under ladders (again, theater), although that’s more of a playful superstition. I’m nearly positive that rabbit feet are bad luck. I say “break a leg” and cheer when I hear the Falcon (our theater’s sort of mascot, I suppose). But Friday the 13th holds no meaning for me.

[the word, by the way, was triskaidekaphobia]

The first thing that popped into my ehad was “fear of words”, since it is a terminology class and have learned well over 200 words, and will continue to learn more, and then it hti me. It’s Friday the 13th. Obviously that must be “fear of Friday the 13th.” So I respond, (it took less time to htink this then it does to read it) “Fear of Friday the 13th”. (74) Triskaidekaphobia is just the fear of the number 13 (tris = three, kai = and, deka= ten), not specifically of Friday the 13th.

Hello, I feel rather terrible. My nose has been dripping, my eyes have been running and I’ve been sneezing all day. And most of yesterday. *sigh* Not fun.

Today we went to Washington DC again. Spent some time with our friend at the American History museum, went to see the Dutch Cityscapes exhibit at the NGA (it was very, very good, if you can go by all means do so!) and then met our friend again and went poking around thrift stores. I found some tank tops that will be nice for the summer and another shirt that I really liked. Plus the first three books of the HG2G books….I just need to finish the set, but ah well. They were fun, I’ll probably get around to reading them again eventually and they were what, $1 each, not bad.

I just got home from the library, they were playing Love Story in honor of Valentine’s day tomorrow (my dad totally missed the connection). It was okay, but not the greatest.
It was funny, the librarian’s boyfriend hates that movie, but he was there as the techie, like always.

Oh, I forgot to mention, this morning I had a very, very strange dream about MB. I can’t remember much of it (it was interrupted just at the good part by my rude alarm clock at 6, horror!), but it was interesting. Beavo was saying something about MCR, someone else was replying to that (this was all in blog form) and Robert had made some sort of witty comment about singing. The really scary thing was that all of the comments in the dream sounded just like how everyone here writes……….very spooky. I guess that’s what happens when you are reading four totally unrelated forums just before you go to bed. I wish I could remember some of the things said (in quotes, not just the main gist) because it was funny. Yes, even when I was awake and still remembered them they were funny and made sense. O.o Odd.

    In my grey coat:
    Left pocket:
    7 Dewey Decimal System bookmarks
2 miniature flyers announcing Thespian meetings on Friday 19.
    1 Starburst wrapper
1 very battered, ancient cell phone with a dead battery
1 silver iPod Nano with a broken screen (plus earbuds) with a dead battery
1 Lady Grey tea bag (unused)
    1 rubber band
    2 pennies
    3 nickels
    12 dimes
    Assorted lint

    Right pocket:
    1 striped silk scarf
1 pair of scuffed cheap red sunglasses
1 scrap of paper talking about my Mayan sign (white magnetic dog)
    2 chocolate wrappers
    2 Earl Grey teabags (unused)
    1 rubber band
    4 pennies
    1 nickel
    2 quarters
    3 one-dollar bills
2 treasure hunt clues (one leading to the replica of an Indian burial canoe, the other to the creepy anti-abortion monument in front of the church)
    1 scrap of wax paper
    1 shopping list
    2 pieces of 1 receipt

This GAPA thinks the distinction is useful and helps make sense of phrases such as “a jealous husband” and “I the Lord thy God am a jealous God.” But many MBers, including other GAPAs, think he’s just being quaint.

    That’s it.
However, often I’ll have my phone, my iPod (nano, green square style) and earbuds, jackknife, wrappers, notes scribbled on scraps of paper and then put through the wash, small lengths of marlin or cordage to tie knots in when I’m bored and interesting rocks/sticks/mostly indestructible small things that I thought were interesting enough to decide to pick up and stash in my pockets until I could take them out and put them somewhere else.
It depends on what I’m doing though, if I’m going for a walk in the woods or something I’m likely to have a lot of pretty acorns/sticks/leaves/rocks/pieces of bark that I’ve picked up, if I’m with friends it’ll more likely be scraps of paper with emails and phone numbers on, if I’m at a living history event it’s going to be a knife, money, handkerchief and lip balm in a tub, maybe a band-aid or two if there’s kids around that are getting into scuffles (I often take shortcuts through the woods where they play and I know a bunch of them), maybe some paper and a small pencil for writing down book titles or names of people and addresses.

Despite this I’m actually more of a bag carrying person if I have to have a lot of stuff with me…I don’t usually rely on pockets unless I have to.

    Aggggggggggggghhhhhhhhhhhhhhh.
That basically sums up how I feel right now. I made the unfortunate mistake of abstaining from light fluffy YA fantasy, and so when I started reading them again I found all the corresponding urges returning, such as wanting to write ALL THE TIME even if I actually don’t have anything to write, and getting all sucked up into the book and leaving little bits and pieces of me lying around in Montmorency and The Stones Are Hatching, which of course reminded me of all the other bits and pieces lying around in Jonathan Strange and Mr. Norrell and Master and Commander and basically every book I’ve ever read and been sucked into regardless of whether or not it is light fluffy YA fantasy. This means that I can focus on absolutely nothing especially not writing or reading and so I wander about in a daze of stories and wish that I lived in a novel and not Real Life (although of course that is a very foolish wish and not something that I actually wish). So yes. I am yearning for Adventure right now on a much larger scale than my usual adventures.

138~ I don’t think you’re crazy……I was feeling exactly the same a few weeks ago, reading the Hornblower books, looking into things to o in the summer and then poking my head out the window and seeing nothing but coldness and nothing new to do. *sigh* I recall rattling around in my room with too much pent up energy that wouldn’t go away even by practicing and writing, but not enough to actually brave going outside and freezing. Or suffering disappointment from not finding much else to to do that was new.

144~ Everyone got that. When MB kicks you off your best bet is to go poke around at our “storm shelter” blog–MuseAcademy. It’s sort of like a little sister to MB, we go there every time there’s problems here. It’s always there, but never moderated unless there’s something weird here you can go check it out if you want at http://museacademy.wordpress.com/

145~ I totally understand, I very often find myself blinking back tears while doing math homework, and more often than I’d like to think about do I completely break down sobbing. Not fun at all. I’m homeschooled, so it’s always when I’m alone in my room, but still, not pleasant.
The horrible thing is, I really, really, really want to understand it and sometimes I do which makes it all the worse when I can’t get it.

Soooo. I might get new ice skates today! That way we can take them with us on Thursday when we go to DC so we can (hopefully) skate at the NGA Sculpture garden. The rental skates there are horrid and expensive to rent, and I need new ones anyway. That should be fun. :D
And we need to look for my birth certificate so I can get a passport and sail this summer. *sigh* I’m impatient and worried because I don’t know how long it takes them to fill up the spots and the information’s been posted since January. Oh well.

Ooh! and choir rehearsals start again today! I’m so glad I can sing. ^.^ I think this time the theme for the concert is “songs that tell stories.” Our director always picks really interesting pieces, so that’ll be fun. :D :D

Mom’s practicing the piano and it sounds lovely. I always like hearing it in the mornings when I come in. I greatly admire the pianists, the have so many keys to keep rack of and they all look the same to me. *sigh* I know, I have 48 concertina buttons that are completely identical, but somehow it’s different. Really!
My earlier attempts at piano failed in varying degrees. I can play about 3 really hokey songs, and not very well, but it’s as far as I got. I like to goof around with the little pump organ at our church though, it’s so cute!

145– *hugs Elwing* At the risk of being either despised or thanked, I will explain how to figure out the surface area of a cylinder. It’s really not too hard.

    1. you need the surface area of the two circular ends. The area of a circle is (pi)*r^2. In words, pi times the radius squared. The radius, of course, is 1/2 the diameter. Since we ahve two ends, the surface area of the two circles is 2(pi)*r^2

    2. The surface area of the tubular part of the cylinder: Much easier than it seems at first. To visualize, mentally slice down the side of the cylinder, then take the tube and flatten it into a solid rectangular piece. The width of this rectangle is the circumference of the circular ends: 2(pi)r. The length is the height of the cylinder, so we have 2(pi)rh.

    3. Add the two seperate areas: 2(pi)r^2 + 2(pi)rh

HOpe this helps! (As opposed to being annoying).

I realize that cat barf is not the most appealing item, but all the more reason to remove it, rather then continue to be bothered by it.

And it can be good for the sake of your cat, as well: The one (and only) time I had to clean up my cat’s vomit (and one of only like two times he’s thrown up in the year we’ve had him–he doesn’t do hairballs), I discovered he had roundworms, as evidence by the worm I found in his vomit. If I had not cleaned it up then, I would likely not have known he had worms, and they would’ve continued to multiply. Not, of course, that roundworms are all that bad of a parasite, as parasite go, but still……And of course, my mother would have been very mad if the cat vomit on her bedroom floor went unremoved.

So I’ve been grounded again. One is that I don’t talk a lot naturally- It’s just not. Who. I. Am. And I don’t like when people try t change me, which is what they are doing. I go for hours at a time without speaking and it doesn’t even occur to me that I don’t. Even at school or with my friends. And trying to make me talk to them has only made me want to get the hell out of this house and never spend time near them. They keep telling me to be independent but don’t like the way I’m doing it.

Today’s chem lecture was fun. The professor was demonstrating ionization energy and such by running an electric current through a dill pickle. ’twas awesome (I had a second row seat–like always). AFter a couple seconds, one end of the pickle began to glow a burning orange (like the color of electric sparks) and it started smoking a whole bunch. Apparentloy the last time he did this (last year, I think), he tried to hold it up so the people in back (it’s a huge 400-500 lecture hall) could see, and I guess he shorted it out and blew a fuse. No such luck this time. He seemed to think it smelled quite awful, and was apologizing to us in front, but I didn’t find it that bad. Actually, it reminded me of the smell of burnt flesh, which although isn’t not really a nice scent, it did remind me of home (that is, the vet clinic where I work), as it smelled nearly identical to when the doctor does laser or electrosurgery. both burn the flesh, of course, generating the same smokey burning smell. I was in the state spelling be back home once, and my sister twice. I got out on my first word, I think. But, to give myself credit, the morons in charge never selected enough words in each category, so by the time they got to me 9and my sister the years she was in), the first word hadn’t been beginner level for a while, but was instead intermediate. ’twas horribly unfair, and I would’ve thought they would learn and select significantly more beginner and intermediate words, but no. Note: By the time most were to there second word, it was up to advanced.

Oh, yeah, my word that I got out on was orthopterology. Haha, that’s funny. My computer says it’s spelled wrong. Doesn’t ahve any spelling ideas. Anyway, I blame the pronunciation of the pronouncer, the “ter” was most definitley prounounced “tor”, so I s[elled it all “o”s. Study of some sort of insect or another, I believe. On a fun note, the year I went to the state bee, my sister was runner up, and the year prior when my sister won for the second time, i was runner up. We dominated together two years in a row. ’twas awesome.

Actually, thgat we even got to have a bee was lucky, as we were homeschooled, and my mom collaborated with some other homeschool peoples to get a homeschool spelling be, and for us to be able to get our winner in the state bee.

There, I proceeded to take a test, fail the test, get a paper, write the paper spend an hour wandering aimlessly through the halls trying to find something to do because the library is closed, get a phone call from my friend who’s on break asking to go see ‘Coraline 3D’ DURING ENGLISH, got my phone taken away, got my phone given back along with a call to my parents, came home to angry parents who were livid about the phone, then about the test, then about a quiz I supposedly failed (“a 97 is not failing, Mom!”), not being able to eat because I’m sick, doing three hours of math, and then going to bed early because ‘I’m in a bad mood’. 1. Oh no, I don’t think madness is an escape route. I’m sure it’s very unpleasant. I just think it’s interesting. Magic sort of. You know, children, they’ve got that connection to magic because for them the line between fantasy and reality is blurred. And then you grow up and that line becomes more solid and you lose it. Now if you’re mad, you don’t have that line, or at least that’s what they say (I really wouldn’t know). I’m not a child anymore, but there’s a childlike piece of me that still believes in magic, only the grown-up piece of me says “Oh, magic can’t really exist, it’s not possible,” and I can’t access it and it’s frustrating. Now I don’t really want to go mad because like I said it sounds unpleasant, but I think I would feel better if I just knew madness existed, and couldn’t be explained away and diagnosed and treated.
    2. On the one hand, science does seem mysterious and magical sometimes, and it’s definitely fascinating. I love it, really I do. But it tries to explain things, things that I don’t want to be explained, things that shouldn’t have rational explanations, like the brain or the universe. And it says that things can’t exist, things that I want to exist and things that shouldn’t be able to exist but that’s the point. Magic doesn’t deny the existence of science, so why should science deny the existence of magic?

Note: When I speak of magic, I don’t mean magic like Harry Potter or…stuff like that, I mean magic realism, like JS&MN or Little, Big or Wise Child.

  198. Alice says:

197- I don’t know. It’s like the old way of looking at magic, back when people–normal people–believed in it. When the Brothers Grimm collected their tales, people believed in them. No one does now, or at least no one admits that they do. I’m not going to say that I believe in fairy tales, necessarily, but I do believe in magic in a subtle, sideways way. If that makes any sense. It’s like when you hear music but when you listen closely, there’s nothing there, or if there’s a shape at the edge of your vision but if you turn, it’s gone. Or when you read cards or palms or heal with herbs and…energy, that’s real magic, everyday magic. And it costs you. You can’t perform magic without putting energy into it. Magic realism is energy, really, that’s all it is, energy.
And then there’s Harry Potter magic with wands and obvious, tangible results and it doesn’t cost anything and only some people can do it if they’re Special and it’s basically popping out of the woodwork. It’s big, it’s showy, it’s out-of-the-ordinary. Real magic doesn’t work like that, or someone would have noticed by now.
I think if it had to summed up in a few words:
Magic realism is subtle and intangible, and magic surrealism (as you put it) is flashy and tangible.

Also, I’ve always considered JS&MN to be magic realism, but it doesn’t fit with my definition at all. I guess… it’s magic realism, but not real magic. Does that make any sense?

  203. (194, et al.) I don’t think real magic goes away, but perhaps our relationship to it and our understanding of what it means varies at different times of our lives and makes it more or less accessible at different times. There are so many stories about children growing up and losing their magical abilities. I think there should be more stories to guide us in finding our way back to a deeper, more meaningful magic. (POSOC?)

For myself, I’ve been there and back again more than once over the years, and each time I feel I’m just beginning to experience magic at levels I couldn’t even imagine before because my perception was too dim and timid and misguided.

  212. (194, 205, and other magical posts) When you hear the word “magical,” what’s the next word that pops into your head? “Powers,” no? I think that’s a misconception: magic, in the sense that Rebecca and others experience it, isn’t about gaining power over the universe. It’s more like adjusting one’s perception of the universe, and perhaps gaining power over oneself.

    (206) Kokonilly: A sine wave is what you get when you take lots of triangles with hypotenuse = 1 and plot their angles on the x-axis and the sine of the angles on the y-axis. For very small angles, the sine is near zero; for angles approaching 90 degrees, the sine approaches 1. That’s all the unit circle is: a way of making sure the hypotenuse is always 1. (That makes the sine calculations easier, because to get opposite over hypotenuse you don’t have to divide.)

Back in the long ago, I briefly dated a magician who gave me a fascinating behind-the-scenes look at how he worked. In the process, he convinced me of something I’d long suspected — that it’s only the cheap tricks that disappoint once you know their secrets. But the good tricks only get better, because then you can appreciate them on more levels. The performance still amazes, even when you know how it’s done.

The brain, the universe, love, art…all of these are very good “tricks” indeed. I believe everything we learn about their mechanics opens the door to greater mysteries that we don’t yet know enough to appreciate fully.

    dreams, hopes, wishes you once

the tales and adventures of childhood
romances and fancies of adolescence –
    all lost

    go through your pockets again
search for a hidden whim, a forgotten fantasy
and keep your wayward wishes safe

It’s being excruciatingly slow right now. *sigh* But joy, we have a comet, a herald of doom and destruction the first day of high speed internet…. I hope setting it up isn’t too hard! ;) Nah, I’m just being facetious.

That’s what happens when I try to post while I’m half asleep……*sigh* I guess I should go, since I’m going to need to wake up tomorrow for another full day.

Oh! I forgot to say, the other day I filled out my application for sail training on the Brig Niagara this summer and sent it in!! So, hopefully I’ll get in. I should, I think. They said they hadn’t gotten a whole lot of applications in yet, that most came in March, so we’re somewhat ahead. That’s good, I hope I can go in July when they’re doing lots of sailing! :D So, if I get in I’ll pretty much be gone for a whole month. The dates we offered were July 2 through August 6, I think give or take a few days, I don’t have a calendar nearby. Eep! I’m horribly excited and can’t wait!! *explodes*
I might write a Muserology article if I go…..that would be fun. *SQUEEEEE*

Okay, now I really have to go get to bed. I’m tired……

Something about magic, in my oppinion, is that we take it for granted. I don’t think magic is discriminating, so if an entire population practiced magic, it would be as normal to them as, say, coffee to us. (I just asked my mom for something normal. You get the point.) By that logic, of course, magic is present in anything anything else is lacking.

I had the most delicious pie last night. After spending that time in my room alone, reading Little, Big, watching Pan’s Labyrinth, drawing and writing I headed over to the SFF special interest house and watched a bit of Pushing Daisies (a show about a pie maker who can bring people back to life for a minute. He uses that power to solve mysteries). We then had a pie inspired by Pushing Daisies. It had strawberries, pears, gruyere cheese. It was delicious. After spending time at the SFF house I went back to my own dorm and found that my RA had put up large pieces of paper for us to draw on on the walls.

Oh! I just had a thought on magic.

Magic is like how the sort of day I had yesterday is compared to fun days that are big and flashy. Yesterday was a delightful day because of its quiet, because of my Pan’s Labyrinth-viewing, Little, Big-reading, writing and drawing. Because of the pie, because of my friends. There are other days proffered to be great, and they are, but they are more flashy and loud such as meeting someone famous or going skydiving. Magic is a quiet sort of great, an everyday wonder. Something fabulous and unusual but not too big.

Axa (28): No, I don’t—how would one go about washing a backpack?

During the school day, I don’t carry much in my pockets. Most everything is in my backpack. To and from school, I have my cell phone in my front right pocket, and my wallet in my back left pocket (of my pants), and an iPod in my coat pocket. When I don’t have a backpack, however, my pockets are packed; I don’t carry a purse or any other type of bag (other than a backpack), so everything needs to go in my pockets. (I always wear pants with pockets, and also a fleece jacket of some sort with big pockets.) I also don’t like carrying change (coins), so whenever I get it, I put it in my left pant pocket and upon arriving home, it goes in my coin-jar-thing.

Sunrunner (90): Yes, I signed up for classes a few weeks ago. We did a lot of work with the Unit Circle last semester in Physics, and now we’re working on it in Elementary Functions (pre-calculus and trigonometry and other such stuff). Our teacher keeps explaining things (most recently radians), and we ask “well, what’s it for?” and she keeps telling us “oh, you’ll use it next year in calculus…” After all of this “you’ll use it in calculus,” I hope it’s actually fun.

Fern has decided something. She has decided that she needs to expand her repertoire. She wants to learn more tunes on the fiddle (memorize them and actually remember both notes and names!), she wants to be able to play them on the concertina and she wants to learn more sea chanties. She realized she wanted to learn more sea chanties because when looking over a list she knows maybe 3/5 of them, this being rough estimate. She wants to know all of them, being the obsessive little freak that she is.
She also wants to learn more songs (not chanties) to sing, as in, lots more verses and getting them all in the right order without stopping in the middle for bursts of profanity when she can’t remember the rest of the lyrics and is forced to stop then and there.
This resolution makes her happy, but she now has to figure out how she is going to learn the said material. The tunes should not be too hard for her, since she has lots of music books, but the songs are going to be more of a challenge since she already can sing along with most everything on her iPod that has lyrics.
The obvious remedy would be to buy more music, which she would love to do, except that she has no money left.

This will require more thought, but she also needs to figure out a way to get extra time in which to learn these songs and tunes. Perhaps it would be good if she stopped posting on MuseBlog and went to bed like a sensible person, since it’s very late.
She thinks this is a good idea and decides to do it.

Fern will continue to speak in third person until further notice.

Anyway, they’re rather flag-centric there, it almost seemed like more was about the flag and it’s history than the fort or the War of 1812 itself. Despite that, I had a grand time exploring the buildings, reading all the signs (those of you who’ve been to a museum with me can imagine….) and squealing in joy when one of the displays started playing several of my favorite songs. (The Minstrel Boy, La Belle Catherine and St. Patrick’s Day in the Morn)
Then I poked around the barracks, examined everything I could get my hands on (or eyes, whatever) and happily froze to death running across the parade grounds form one building to another.
In short, it was a most lovely day. :D

Just when I think I start to make out the Milky Way I wonder if I’m just seeing evidence of a shopping center in the distance. :| But, it is still possible to see a number of stars at least…

Light pollutions is creeping in where I live too, I remember the night sky being really dark with only a slight pinkish haze in the direction of the big town on overcast nights, but now the sky is decidedly light in that direction at all times and the rest of the sky is noticeably lighter too. Even in the past 3 or 4 years I can see the difference. :(

Okay, more details on SciOly regionals!! Everyone had to be at the high school at 6:15 am, but the bus didn’t get there until 6:30 or so. We rode the bus out to a semi-local college; it was about an hour drive. I practice my songs for sounds of music and such. When we got there, my friend and I impounded our cookies for Food Science (Mitosis cookies! They fused together and looked like cells dividing, so we decided we were going to call them mitosis cookies). We also impounded the notebook that she had stayed up till 3 AM finishing. I’m really thankful for that… next year, we’re definitely going to start preparing earlier.
Anyway, I went to my first event, Sounds of Music, and we played a song on our banjo and digeridoo-panpipe-thingies and answered a few questions that, shockingly, we actually knew the answers to. Then we hung around to help our varsity practice a little bit and headed back to our home base.
Next was Food Science, and after spilling Sudan IV all over the table and our answer papers we managed to come up with some answers and results that seemed decently plausible.
After that a bunch of my friends and I walked down to the main street near the college and had lunch. It was really fun, but then we had to rush back so we could get to our next events.
I had Cell Bio next, and the test was hard. We didn’t know the answers to a lot of the questions, but we guessed and came up with some reasonably plausible answers.
Almost none of my friends had events during the fourth block, so we walked back down to the main street and went into some stores and such. Then we came back and hung out in the home base room. Eventually, we headed over to the awards ceremony. The lady in charge didn’t really seem to be very sure of what she was supposed to do, but all the medals did eventually get handed out.
And I won two seconds and a first! Third place for JV overall and third for Varsity as well, so our varsity is going to States!!
We all played Truth or Dare on the bus ride back, and it was so much fun. I love Science Olympiad.

Ok, I’ve got a question for you guys. A question that would perhaps be better suited for the books and reading thread, but it doesn’t get as much traffic.

I was wondering if any of you had read any of the books in Cassandra Clare’s “Mortal Instruments” series (City of Bones, City of Ashes). It seems to have greatly mixed reviews. I read Claire’s HP Draco Trilogy fanfic a couple years back on the rec of an MBer (I forget who), and I greatly enjoyed it, despite all the plagiarism allegations. (seriously, it’s a fanfic, fanfics are, by definition, closely akin to plagiarism. And she did have all her quotes/etc that came from other works documented as coming from other works, no matter how poorly.)

So, anyway, my question is whether or not any of you have read anything in her Mortal Instruments series, and if so, is it worth my time? The reviews on Amazon, when not debating her previous works in the HP fandom, imply that it is very poorly written, unoriginal, and prose-y. Actually, most of the reviews make me think a bit of my feelings on Twilight……but let’s not go there.

I don’t suppose any of you read it, and could offer an opinion?

I had just been reminiscing over potter, delving into some (admittedly poor) fanfics, which made my mind jump to DT, and then to “hey, she wrote a book, wonder if it’s any good?”

    So, yeah……I’m rambling, aren’t I?

331~ If you don’t know if you’d like her reading, find one of her fanfics, read a bit of it and if it’s promising (plagiarist or not) then check the book out. If not, don’t waste your time. Or check the book out and see if you want to read it. If not there’s no obligation to actually read all the books you check out from the library…..although it’s nice if you can.

  331. Luna the Lovely says:

331–Fiddler, I have tried her fanfics, and I liked them. (If I hadn’t tried ’em, I wouldn’t have any luck finding ’em now, as she removed them all well over a year ago…..)

Which, I guess, begs the question: Since I liked the fanfics, why am I so undecided about trying her actual book? Erm, really not sure…..I guess because I’m afraid I won’t enjoy them, and although I do realize that their is no obligation to continue reading a book you don’t enjoy, I tend to be the kind to go through to the bitter end. (Yeah, I read all of the first three twilights, and I was disgusted end chapter one fo the first.) I guess I just don’t want to be drug into another book/series like that, where I want my brain cells and time back, even while I forge onword through the books.

And, of course, I doubt my campus library has the books. Although it is ginormous, the vast majority is scholarly/reference books, and I doubt they’d have something as recent as these. And there is only one part of the library that I have seen pleasure books in, a small, gloomy room somewhere on the second or third floor, that is lined with cages. yup, cages. ’tis very creepy. Shelves of books up to the ceiling, unfinished atmosphere, very little light, and of course the cages (they’re like little study cubicles, I guess, but they are honest to goodness cages. chainlink fencing enclosing tiny spaces w/ desks, and the cages lock.) Hmmmm, come to think of it, I dreamt I was there, to check out the Hp books there (they have 2 or 3 of the series in the creepy cage room), and well, I was alone, and terrified in the dream. And I think something was stalking me…….

So, I dunno. I probably should just try checking ’em out from the library back home (assuming they have ’em) over the summer. It’s not really like I ahve time to read here, and if I do, I’ve got several books, from an author I know I like, to choose from……

    ~ My Immortal
My Immortal is trolling gold, a work that drips tongue in cheek humor. Themes include heavy drug use, uniquely descriptive profanity, and complex gender issues. Coupling terrible plot, a complete disregard for all English language standards and a goffik perspective with a badly concealed exterior narrative, My Immortal is just a little easier to read than Finnegan’s Wake, but will undoubtedly weaken your mastery of language, not strengthen it. Recommended reading for those interested in theoretical writing styles. You’ll need a strong sense of humor, and possibly some pain medication.

Except for the last two lines of chapter four:

“WHAT THE HELL ARE YOU DOING YOU ************!”

    It was…………………………………………………….Dumbledore!”

Not sure why, but…..that put me into (silent) hysterics. I was cracking up, albeit silently, as not to disturb my roommate, who has more intelligence than me and is studying.

But, well, either the human race has degraded beyond all imaginability, or these people are deliberately writing that poorly (more likely). Is it just me, or does there seem to be a very unsubtle undercurrent making fun of “gofficks”?

I asked her what it was and she said she thought it was chocolate, then the class started. SO anyway, we were looking out the window as She was speaking and all of a sudden she started yelling at us and accusing us of “not listening” and “not doing anything yesterday” (we didn’t understand, and were stuck on 1 problem all day) and finally “talking ever since we got into the class” so…
We said (if loudly) that we hadn’t said a word, then she just yelled back at us so we shut up and fumed. Walking back from Maths we told our friend Jo what had happened but it so happend that McNail was in the Science Block, where we were and she called Caitlin back to tell her off for “spreading untruths about what happend in Maths class” and so Caitlin said she had been hurt by what McNail said so McNail saidshe “shouldn’t be talking about that anyway”

Arrrgh I hate this year already. By the way can somebody help me with this problem:

But, yes, there are some enjoyable fanfics out there, although many now are “dated”, as they were written before the end of the series, filling in their ideas or wishes of what they wanted to happen……Still, they can be enjoyable.

Conversely, men, who after all are constantly declaiming that their lack of impulse control is a product of evolution and there’s not a thing they can do about it, would abide in a persistent legal state of pre-rape.

Women can still have all the sex they want; if they adjudge that their dude hasn’t raped them, all they have to do is not call the cops.”

    Ebeth has an exciting story

So i’m in torch, 7th period, we have about fifteen minutes left before school gets out, and DK (the principal) comes on saying that there’s a lockdown, that it’s not a drill, and that there’s no immediate danger at the school, but there’s an issue in the community and they can’t let us go home just yet. So i’m freaking out because i didn’t have service at that time (it’s really touchy because there’s a sprint tower right by the school that blocks things out) Anyway, andy had early dismissal which is a thing for seniors if they get a 7th period study hall where they can just leave school early. So i borrowed amanda’s phone to text him, but he was in the band room. he had just come back for jazz band, so he was ok. Turns out a guy living right across the street from his school had gotten drunk and barricaded himself inside his house with weapons threatening suicide. They thought he might have had hostages at first but i think they decided there weren’t any. The torch room is on the second floor facing the street where the guy was so we peeked out the window from time to time and we could see police cars and a SWAT van. Eventually, after an hour and a half of lockdown, they talked to the police and decided to let us leave but we all had to go out the front door. A lot of students park their cars on the street where the guy was, since it’s close to the school and the school has virtually no parking anywhere, and so now a lot of seniors are stuck without their cars until tomorrow (andy included, we had to call my parents for a ride). Andy had come back for jazz band and the middle school had been in the middle of band when the lockdown happened but they moved them to the auditorium because the band room is literally across the playground from the guy’s house. danny got a RC plane stuck in a tree a couple years ago from flying it on the playground, and the guy flipped out on him. Anyway, i called andy once i got out and he said he needed to run to the band room to get his stuff. My trumpet was in there, but i had assumed that we weren’t allowed to go back so i asked him if we were allowed back there and he said johnson was taking some of the students back to get their stuff. So i ran back inside and went with them to get my trumpet and while i was in the band room my brother called. Before i could answer, my phone ran out of battery, and i don’t know my brother’s phone number (sad, i know) so i used andy’s phone to call my dad, who said that james had just called. Anyway, he gave us rides home and we went and got ice cream. It was all just insane. the guy is still in his house i think, but i haven’t checked the news in a while. But it’s all crazy.

    Pie 0

  412. Luna the Lovely says:

413–any airport that does not require a tram ride between my arrival gate and my departure gate ranks higher than others, as it is almost guaranteed that if you have a layover of any less than 2 hours, your incoming flight will have been delayed enough that you are down to 15 minutes or less before your next plane boards (45 minutes or so before departure, or more often, for my sister at least, her flights tend to arrive late, about 15 minutes prior to actual departure, after boarding is already well underway…..).

So, if I do not have to jump on a tram, and can just run (or speed walk) down the airport, it is much simpler, as the trams only leave about every five minutes (which if you are very short on time, is not near quick enough). So, basically, let’s see……except for my initial airport I leave from at school, and my final arrival in beautiful Alaska, it seems like all the airports have required tram trips.

Seattle: requires a tram trip from main terminal to satellite (or it did when I went through there). Not to mention, it’s nicer when I don’t have to go through here, as it usually means I’m having a less than direct flight, hopping to some other random sitting before hopping to my final destination.

For instance, when I went through Seattle coming back down after Christmas, I went to Cincinnati next (rather out of the way, hopped over central time zone all the way to eastern, then hopped back again to my final destination…..) However, as far as the Cincinnati airport went, I had nothing against it. It was a very nice airport, big, open, I didn’t have to take a tram (although, there was the potential I owuld), and I had a long enough layover that I was able to go enjoy a leisurely “lunch” of cheese fries at Outback. Yum.

Minneapolis: This one’s the real annoyance. Decent enough airport, but almost guaranteed you’ll arrive at the opposite end of the terminal than you depart from, meaning you not only have a miniscule amount of time to get to your departing gate, you also have to hop a tram. Of course, it is nice, in that it is the most direct way to get from home to here, and here to home. AK to MN to final airport, but…..still hate the tram hopping.

I believe on the way home I am going through Salt Lake City, dunno what that will be like….

I suppose I would have to say I am partial to Anchorage International [I refuse to call it by its “official” name] (to the best of my knowledge, all incoming outgoing flights go through there, GAPA, so I wouldn’t think that would be all tha revealing), as, well, I go through there every single time I fly anywhere. So it is familiar, and thus nice. I am partial to the “new” portion (a couple years ago they made some additons/renovations to the main terminal), and it is nice (complete with a moving walkway for us lazy people!).

And the decorations are, in a slightly morbid way, nice (lots of decorations of stuffed–as in real stuffed–native animals. polar bear, grizzly bear, fox, lots of things. I even think there might be a musk-ox. I forget)

‘though, the security video that plays while you are standing in line for security gets old real fast. Especially as they have played the same thing for probably the past 2 years (past half dozen plane trips, at least–either by me or my sister), and a person can only watch a person dressed as a moose (or bald eagle–they have both), go through security on the tape so many time before said individual desire forcible contact between their head and the nearest hard surface.

Dang, this comment took awhile to write…..probalby ahd something to do with th fact that it doesn’t work well to keep switching betwen typing this post, and typing emails to my parents……gotta go email my dad back…..

414- I remember Salt Lake as being nice.

Kyra- This was from months ago, but I remember you saying that you were shocked at how loud violins are, being so small. This is because there is thing called the triangle of pitch (a name my orchestra teacher seems to have invented). The instruments with the higher range will sound louder than the instruments with lower range. I wonder if this connects to the mosquito noise.

MissSwan-I would make Ares an unsuspecting trouble maker, who triggers conflict without being aware of it. Having zero social cognition skills is infuriating to all around you, and war-like in an untraditional way. That probably wouldn’t help you write a story though. Sorry.

Disney- I reject all modern Disney establishments as products of capitalistic consumer culture. They do produce some great films, and the classics are, well, classic, but I cannot bring myself to forgive Mr. Disney for what has happened with his knowledge, in Florida and elsewhere.

I will be doing Moody’s Mega Math (English)Challenge [May be of interest to those of you who will be upperclassmen in highschool next year], if the social system allows such craziness to be accepted. Do what’s right for yourself or the able?

    414) A tram! I remember my parents telling me about that. I don’t know where they went that required a tram but there was somewhere. Personally I really like LAX, not that I’ve traveled much yet. I’m worried about all that changing over and jumping on trams (ack!) if I go to college out of state but I figure I’ll get the hang of it. I agree anything playing on tvs or speakers gets old really fast!

    416) Disneyland at least is like an octopus which spreads its magical tentacles throughout the surrounding city. This is a plus in that they spruced up the surrounding area (mostly for tourists I suspect) and a negative in that they have unfair labor practices, I believe? I don’t know much about their dirty big business other than that they have a hand (tentacle) in everything and that I wouldn’t put much past them. Disney being an anti-Semite doesn’t help either.

418–as long as you plan ahead and make sure that you have adequate time to make your connections, catching the tram isn’t a big deal. Of course, especially when travelling in the winter months, planes seem to be delayed quite a long while, meaning that your more than adequate 2 hour layover, has been turned into 30 minutes or less, and you have to make a mad dash for your next flight. I was worried about the whole process (flying by myself, making my connections), but after doing it once, I was significantly reassured–although still found it more stressful, as I had know one to worry about making the connections for me, and had to do all the worrying myself….

Like, Amber brown or Naomie brown? She says to wait until tomorrow, *******…”

ATTENTION ALL MUSEBLOGGERS! We need to reach 500 posts before midnight! Well, we don’t need to, but … you know what I mean. So post here!

Maybe we should stop at 500 too, so there will be exactly 500 posts when the thread closes.

For some odd reason, that reminds me of an xkcd comic:

479- I don’t suppose he’ll even bring you a bouquet or a box of chocolates, will he? Tsk, tsk. What a shame. You could come over to the H&H for a good, strong drink, if you so desire.

As for days of the month, there’s a good one to remember the ancient Roman calendar as well:
    In March, July, October, May
The Ides fall on the 15th day,
The Nones the 7th. All besides
Have 2 less days for Nones and Ides.

*ponders other ways to break the 500 post mark without PoPoing*

467- I can never remember that. :( To be added to the do-too list.
481/483: Yeah, like that. I don’t think those are snarky enough, but thanks.

This has just turned into a thinly veiled attempt to pass 500 without PoPoing. I am to balme.

    479) Anniversary of what? Is that a very stupid question? I’m a very oblivious person……
    489) Oh. Are yall going out? How did I not know that? *head desk* That’s awesome! And you got flowers and chocolates? How nice! Gosh. It’s amazing how people remember these things. I can’t remember my own mother birthday, much less the day I start going out with someone.
