Welcome, Neophytes! (June 2009 edition)

Are you new to MuseBlog? Make this your first stop. We’ve got some pie fresh out of the oven, and friendly locals ready to answer your questions and help you feel at home.

For starters, we recommend that newcomers (that’s what “neophytes” means) look over The Rules and The HG2MB (Hitchhiker’s Guide to MuseBlog), which contains more helpful information than you can shake a stick at. We don’t know why you’d want to shake a stick at it, but now you know you don’t have to bother.

Don’t forget to stop by Who’s Here (see the menu at the top of your screen) and announce your arrival in a comment there, so we’ll be sure to add you to the official list.

MuseBlog Veterans: Please use this thread only to welcome newcomers as they arrive and answer questions that they ask.

First post! Yay! Ok, so I’m a kinda-sorta neophyte, but I pretty much know my way around and all the rules and stuff. My only problem is that I’m still sort of confused at how you get to threads that aren’t in the current month. Can anyone help? thanks!

to get to older threads either (A) type in the title in the orangish search box in the top right or (B) scroll down to the bottom and hit the previous posts button

  3. Errata says:

You can either go to the recent comment bar, or if you want something else and know either the specific month, or are willing to use ctrl+F, the ‘what’s here’ tab is of great help. Otherwise, you can look at the drop down menu below ‘recent comments’, under the category you want. You need pies, don’t you.

We appreciate your decision. We may get a little frustrated, but we don’t get angry — we just take what steps seem necessary to reserve this thread for its intended purpose.

SFTDP earlier!! SO SORRY!!! I’m not going to post this until someone else posts something so that I won’t risk a triple post………………….

See, I can explain for the (accidental) double post which as you’ve probably noticed says pretty much the same thing:

My computer froze up after I pressed the Post button and this weird icon popped up because my computer likes to do weird things like that. Anyway, then I reworded my comment and posted that second one because I thought that my first post hadn’t worked or something. And so then I came back and *gasp* saw that I had double posted on accident. Sorry….

Puffin puffs) They are a dish at the MuseBlog may day balls. The puffins aren’t always completely dead, and there are still feathers attached. I just keep wondering what our vegan and vegetarian bloggers think… I just have a very vivid mental image of them.

22-Considering this is the ‘phytes thread, where we try to introduce the MB culture and explain things to the ‘phytes, I’m not sure that openly admitting to aiming for causing confusing is good. After all, the ‘phytes might get the wrong idea and just post confusing/utterly senseless posts everywhere for the sake of being confusing. I know, I know, I shouldn’t be such a killjoy, but there are other threads for saying stuff like that. *pies*

Ok, well I guess I’ll tell you a little about myself…first of all, I’m soccer starr’s friend. I told her about Muse a really long time ago and then we both subscribed and are pretty much addicted. I had already been “lurking” on the site for a while as you call it, and I’m not really sure why I never posted, I just kind of preferred to read the threads and stuff. So then soccer starr tells me at school about the site and I think I said something like “Well, I go on the site pretty often, I just don’t really post that much!” So then she tells me that her “name” on here is soccer starr which is really convenient because she’s AMAZING at soccer… So yeah. I guess I have her to thank for beginning to post because otherwise I’m not sure if I would have. So anyway, that’s pretty much it. I guess I’ll stop this pointless lecture now…

Hi, Little Basement Kitten!!!! If you’ve read the previous posts in this thread, you’ll see that I’m kind of a neophyte too, so I’m not sure if I’m the one to correct you on this *apologizes to more experienced Musers here* but I do know that most Musers don’t enjoy people that post multiple times in a row-it becomes a (little) annoying after a while. If you accidentally post twice in a row, writing SFTDP (sorry for the double post) is usually an acceptable apology. When it comes to more than two posts in a row, however, you might find yourself with a pie in the face. (or two!) Trust me, I learned this the hard way. But for the (most) part, the Musers around here are very friendly and will gladly answer any of your questions.

Also, you’ll want to be careful about PoPoing around here. That means pointless posting, and is also pretty annoying. Although we (or at least, me) love randomness, don’t be too random. It’s nice to try to stick with the conversation topic in posts-I find it a good idea to read the last few posts or so so that you know what’s going on. For example, writing “I have to leave now” is considered random. Unless you’re in the random thread, of course, in which pretty much anything goes. Finally, have fun!! I love this site even though I haven’t been on for very long.

P.S. I didn’t mean to scare you off with any of this-but the Muse culture is pretty important around you, so you’ll want to try to stick with it as best as possible. Also, reading the HG2MB and Rules will give you more info as to the culture here.

and we love you as long as you
don’t pull bunnies from your hat.

    We run away from bunnies
but if you need to ask why
then you’re sure to have a friendly
    cream banana cherry pie.

    We all think slightly sideways
and we hope you do that too
and if you use proper grammar
then we’re going to love you.

Yes, we call it Mostly Harmless

Basically this is a general blog for Muse readers, however, you don’t have to be a Muse reader to post-it’s pretty much open to anyone. Start off by reading the Rules and HG2MB. Those are two good places to get a feel for what goes on here as well as our “Muse culture”-in other words, the proper etiquette, what’s expected of people, what’s disliked, etc. This thread is a place for neophytes, or newcomers. It’s a good place to ask any questions about the blog, and we’ll be happy to answer them. Finally, have fun!!!! Oh one more thing-here, pies aren’t thrown to be mean, but simply exchanged as you would exchange a hug or a handshake. We tend to throw them at newcomers, so without further ado:

      Because her name, onomatopoeia, means:
-the formation of a word from a sound associated with what is named (e.g., cuckoo, sizzle).
-the use of such words for rhetorical effect.
