Logomania Unleashed!

The title of the June Random Thread (from the Greek words logos, “word,” and mania, “madness,” used as a suffix meaning “an infatuation with or passion for something”) celebrates words and language in all their giddy vertiginous kaleidoscopic splendiferous wonderfulness.

logomania01r2

Why words? MuseBlog is made of them, for one thing. And this month, when most of you don’t have to use them for schoolwork for a while, is the perfect time to remember how much fun they are to play with.

(Users’ Manual: Obey The Rules. Consult The Guide. Have fun!)

I’m wearing overalls and looking for a swimsuit. *sigh* I do believe I shall now despair of ever finding one that I will wear happily.
Where do the girls of the blog get their swimsuits?
Currently I’m scouring the Land’s End site, but their stuff is rather dreadful, and LL Bean things simply do not fit.
    *sigh again*

Wal*Mart. Or any grocery store that also sells clothing (such as Fred Meyers, but that’s a West Coast thing). My last swimsuit I think I actually broke down and got it from JC Penny’s, because I was shopping in August in Alaska, which is not bathing suit season, so all that Wal*Mart and Freddy’s had were bikinis. *shudder* I”m much too self-conscious for that.

  25. (8) Groundhog, I found out what happened with the Hebrew lettering. For some reason the Windows clipboard reversed the order of the letters. I still don’t know why. It works correctly when I paste into Google (or MuseBlog) but reverses in Photoshop or Microsoft Word. Thanks for catching the error. I hope it’s correct now.

(5, 8, and others) Yes, most of the quotations are from various Coy Woodnesse threads, some from Ble, some from translations of our blog heading, with a few odds and ends from elsewhere. Around 90 separate passages in the foreground and 30 or so in the background.

(11, 18) Maybe you can tell a little better from seeing just the background. The “blob” isn’t anything, just where the silhouettes overlapped.

    • There are some beautiful verses in the Song of Songs, too, not all of which are embarrassing. One of my all time favorite passages anywhere is “For, lo, the winter is past, the rain is over and gone; the flowers appear on the earth; the time of the singing of birds is come, and the voice of the turtle is heard in our land.”

In a high school honors chorus we sang Daniel Pinkham’s settings to some of the verses. Ah, it was so beautiful, so wonderful to sing. And weird to be a tenor. But that’s another story. A big chunk of my MFA thesis was a series of poems inspired by the Song of Songs. While my version can’t compete with the original in most respects, mine probably holds the edge in sheer weirdness.

Mm. The Bible. I’ve never read it, mainly because I’m not religious. When I was six or seven I picked it up in a motel room and tried to read it because I had nothing else to read, but it was very boring so I gave up.

Crazy people at work today. I hope they don’t fire me.

I wish it would just rain already. It smells like rain and feels like rain, and has for two days, but it just isn’t raining. It’s so awkward.
My dad finished the frame for me kayak. It’s really tight and kind of hard to get in and out of, but that’s how Greenland boats are supposed to be. God, I hope I don’t capsize. I would never get myself out in time. I’d have to hang upside down and bang on the hull until someone rescued me, by which time I probably would have inhaled gallons of water and died. Luckily, cold-water drownings can be brought back to life up till thirty minutes after their heart’s stopped (or something), and it probably won’t take more than two minutes, so I should get off with relatively little brain damage.

I think I’ll paddle around in the shallows for a while first, and then learn to roll, and then go on longer expeditions. And I believe I’m going to take the paddle-making class, so I’ll have my own paddle as well as my own boat.
Last year I had no boat and so didn’t do much actual paddling (for the last day I don’t think I did anything but sit around and shiver and drink hot chocolate), but this year’s going to be much better in that respect, I hope.

How do you get out of a kayak, anyway? A canoe is easy, if it tips (been there, done that), as you aren’t strapped in in anyway, but in a kayak, you’re sort of enclosed (from the waist down) in it, aren’t you? In a little water sealed “skirt” thingy?

      Pie 0
      Squid 0
      • Alice says:

Oh, really you just sort of pop out. At least, I always have in the boats I’ve capsized in. If you’ve got a really good skirt you have to consciously pull it off the kayak and then come out, but the only times I’ve capsized with a skirt was with the leaky ones. Whenever I’m wearing a good one I’m generally rolling, or trying to, and someone’s there to right me if I can’t come up, so I don’t have to wet-exit.

The people who used kayaks originally weren’t supposed to get out of their kayaks, because they’d get hypothermia in the arctic water. They taught their children to roll at a very young age, so by the time you were venturing into the open ocean to catch seals, you knew how to come up if you capsized. If it didn’t work, your friends would right your boat, or else you would probably die.

I’m not sure exactly, but I think it has something to do with the fact that cold water slows down the body’s systems. If you’re in cold water (which slows down systems), I suppose your brain can survive longer without oxygen, thus meaning you have an increased chance of survival after a “long” period of time, than if you had been in warmer water. Again, I’m not exactly sure, but I would guess that it has something to do with that…..Don’t take my word for it, though.

Don’t give up hope! I got very frustrated before finding the right one.

On the previous thread, I mentioned that I will be volunteering at my local library this summer.
On Saturday, I went to a training session. The volunteer coordinator told us about things like proper attire, how to sign people up for reading programs, and what to do if a wacko comes in.

She asked us not to wear “dangerous accessories”, namely, things with protruding metal spikes. I immediately thought of the Fulboid Studge dress code and started laughing.

Finals start tomorrow. Hooray. I can barely contain my excitement.

Technically, I had part of my French final today. It’s a long test, so in order to fit it all into next Monday’s exam period we took the spoken and essay portions ahead of time. I did very well on the spoken section, but I screwed up on the essay. I’m not sure how badly–it’ll depend on how harshly my teacher grades. Suffice it to say that I’m worried. Luckily, the essay only counts for 15% of the final.

Tomorrow I have English and World History. The English test is multiple choice and standardized, so it shouldn’t be too difficult. A good portion of the questions have glaringly obvious answers, but there’s a certain type of question (“Rewrite this sentence more coherently/flowingly/etc”) that I consistently have difficulty with. Often, one of the other answers sounds right. I’m reasonably certain I’ll get an A.

I also got a new swim suit, but mom wouldn’t buy me shorts for it, so now I have to wander around without any. She wants me to be girly, and it drives me nuts because she just won’t accept that I will never be comfortable with being girly. Ok, I’m done, sorry.

I am part of the *TURTLE FORCES*… basically, it consists of me and my three friends. We made it ’cause we are awesome.

110~ Maybe go for a dress or skirt, but don’t do anything with your hair if she’s really that bad. I recommend long and full skirts, since then you can get away with not shaving your legs and flat, plain shoes….in my experience. Easier to move in and cooler, too, if you follow that plan.
I’m not particularly girly (I don’t think) but, as you can see, I do wear dresses and skirts and enjoy it. Sometimes.
Feminine isn’t always bad, and neither is wearing dresses. It’s in the attitude and how you act. For example, I can wear a dress and climb trees, throw tomahawks, talk about ships and pine tar, run footraces (and win), etc. etc. Not exactly conventionally girly things, even though, since I am a girl I am by nature, rather feminine. If this makes any sense at all.
It seems to me that a lot of girls who don’t want to be seen as girly spend a whole lot of time and effort avoiding feminine things, trying to prove that they’re just as tough, strong, masculine, etc. as any of the guys. Well honey, I think if you put your effort into following your interests, no matter what they are–considered girl friendly or no–and make them your own you’ll become a much fuller individual, no matter what your gender. But trust me, I know the pressures to be girly in a pink and frilly way, just read on the Complaints and Rants….I’ve been there, I am there, and I hate it. I know very well what it’s like. ;)

I love dressy pants-they’re great because they’re not totally girly-girl, but feminine enough that they can look presentable and will keep your mom happy. As for the hair, there are a lot of styles that aren’t girly but look good. I mean, you could always do a messy bun sort of thing which is very pretty in my opinion but not (extremely) girly. Just a suggestion.
I’m not a total girly-girl, but I do like dressing up and wearing skirts, dresses, etc. On the other hand, I do a lot of things that would be considered “boys” stuff which makes me a little less girly.

I’m pretty tomboyish, so all of my skirts (including fancy stuff) will allow me to play basketball. I can move in whatever I wear, or I won’t wear it.

Long skirts look good on just about anybody, you can move in them, just be careful not to trip. Nice sweater, I suppose, and flats. High heels are EVIL. Invented by HPBs, they were. RE: dressing up: I love dressing up, probably because I spent so many years with a closet full of beautiful things to wear and no-one to see them, so now that there are people to see them, I dress up almost every day. It has its downsides, namely that Halloween and special occasions become considerably less fun, since my dress clothes/costumes are no different from my everyday clothes, but it’s great fun. I’ve also developed Useful Skills, like how to ride a bike in a long skirt or clamber through the woods in flowing sleeves. I tried to do parkour in a mid-calf-length sundress and sandals once–that failed pretty miserably, but other than that my clothes only occasionally hinder me. If you wear shorts or pants under your skirts you can do pretty much anything.
Still, if costuming isn’t your thing, you shouldn’t have to dress up (although it makes life more interesting for the people who sit withering away under the oppressive and monotonous jeans-t-shirt-flip-flops style).

Speaking of clothes: My sister and mother went shopping today. I broke off and went to several other stores looking for dapper little vests, which seem to be in style and which I am in sore need of (no highwayman costume is complete without a waistcoat), but all the nice ones were too big, so I rejoined Mother and Opal, and found a lovely pair of grey pants and a red shirt, and Mother bought me a red and black and white scarf with flowers on it. I’m not a huge fan of most current fashion, but if one takes the right elements and blend them with the right elements from other periods, it can look really good.

There was more information than you ever wanted to know about my clothes. I’m sorry, I just get really excited about costuming.

    110) What about sundresses ? *is a dress fan* My usually style is sort of tomboy-ish but I have several dresses. Like Middnight Fiddler said, you can run in most of them- and it`s all about attitude. Highheels are evil sometimes, but stay away from loose flats what you run, be it sandals or ballarinas. Then have a tendency to fly off and skid ahead on their own *remembers subway station incident*.

As for the hair- what about a low ponytail with a nice clip? It s not hard and if the clip is fancy, it´ll look nice. Besides, it`s easy to fix. It just might not look fancy enough- I m and expert at going underdressed.

Now for something totally shallow… I have a new sundress and it s blue and I love it! The H&M summer collection is so much better this year.

    106) Hmm… I took mine apart once already, and it didn`t get much worse, but I`m afraid to do it again because I`m loosing part of the dateline near Antarctica (it´s a globe). I might just try it…

Re: Clothing/fashion–I am hopeless at fashion. Until I was 10, I would put on any clean items of clothing in my drawers, considering color coordinating to be for girly girls. When I was ten, I became a bit more fashion conscious–I started putting on shirts and pants that were similar colors. I had never worn jeans in my life before this spring, because I had this fantasy that it was impossible to find jeans that fit you. I wore sweatpants, and had no idea how bad I looked in them. Now I just put on any shirt with jeans, considering jeans to go with everything. I have no idea what is and what isn’t a ‘brand name,’ and I like it that way. My parents are fairly unpressured about what I wear. They will not let me wear a bra unless I’m exercising.
I haven’t worn a dress or a skirt since I was seven, except as part of a costume for plays. In my opinion, there are some people on which dresses and skirts don’t work for casual occasions, and I am one of them. I feel badly though because her mom is really into fashion and is always bugging her to wear “appropriate” clothes when she really doesn’t want to. She even forced her to layer her hair once!

Also, she likes being called a tomboy-it’s kind of like her second name. The truth is, she is proud to be called a tomboy so we don’t worry that she’ll be offended or anything like that when we call her one. But I do agree, it’s a pretty outdated term that you really have to be careful when you use it because some people are sensitive about it.

Austrain schools) The picking order is slightly different: the school type I’m in (gymnasium, for academic studies, requires high grades for entry) starts in 5th grade and ends in 12th with the Matura, the exam required to pursue further studies/get any sort of well-paid job. The grades are numbered 1-8 (the 8th graders being 12th graders,…). The first 4 are Unterstufe (5th through 8th grade), the next 4 are Oberstufe. The lowest in each section are picked on, and there’s always a bit of friction since the Oberstufe have much more privileges, but the Unterstufe have much less exams/easier classwork (except maybe 5th grade, where the teachers are trying to cut down the number of kids in the classes-no child left behind never hit Austria, they have a different approach to schools). And the higher Oberstufe consider it their job to teach the new students manners (5th grade), which causes some trouble. It’s only the Unterstufe that get dumped in trashcans though.

I’ve decided that if I graduate and go to college but don’t need to take any more math courses (a possibility), I’m going to have a solid grasp on everything up to integral calc. NO MORE SCHOOL!!!

THERE PROCEEDS A WOEFUL AND SELF-PITYING TALE WHICH MIGHT NOT BE WORTH READING, BUT ALICE GOT WELL INTO IT BEFORE REALIZING THAT IT WAS POINTLESS AND IT’S QUICKER TO FINISH AND ANYWAY SHE NEEDS TO VENT.
I’m actually finding it kind of hard to believe, maybe because today was one of the worst days ever and I subconsciously don’t want the year to end on that note. I swear I was close to tears half the day. I woke up with the most painful sore throat EVER and didn’t even speak until I got to school because it hurt too much. I turned in all my textbooks and then the librarian said, “Actually you still have a textbook out” so I had to trek all the way across the school (did I mention I was wearing high heels? Luckily they’re really good solid ones, no harder than walking in flip-flops or something) to ask Mr. C if I’d turned in the book (I had). Then I had all the math homework to finish, so I was doing that desperately all day (I didn’t finish completely, but it’s a pass/fail class and I’ll definitely pass and it doesn’t affect my GPA anyway) and I was late to fifth period because they messed up the schedule. We dissected a rat, which was OK, but my whole group was really squeamish due to the smell of preservatives and I still felt ill from the REALLY NASTY cough syrup so it wasn’t the best thing ever, but we got through it and it was pretty interesting. After that things went fairly smoothly, and Ms. C did bring kittens, and absolutely darling kittens they were too. Then I had lunch, and then Global Studies, and things were still going pretty well, though the math situation was desperate. So then I went to Drama where we were reading Midsummer Night’s Dream and I’d meant to get out of it because my throat hurt and I had all this math homework and I’ve already seen the play, and read it, and seen it. But it turns out that was our final so I had to read, which meant I had to go check my book out from the library again and by then it was awful cause I had one of those headaches where your head alternately feels like it’s being squeezed by a too-tight hat and like it’s going to explode from all the pressure. So I spent most of the class lying on my backpack staring at the ceiling because it hurt my head to sit up. And then I had to go return the book! Which took ten minutes because of the line, and I’m like “Oh my gosh I’m going to miss my bus” and I run to the office and hold out my check-out sheet (only I have to stand in line again) and they say, “oh you have to go get your locker checked” and I say “but I checked it on Friday! It’s empty! It’s been empty since I got it!” and they say, “Go check it anyway” so I got it checked and went to Mr. M’s to turn in my math homework, and by this time I’ve been crying for five minutes and about to cry for several hours and then I got turn in my check-out sheet and I just make it onto the last bus, which is not as crowded as I remember and the driver tells a long story over the little intercom thing about how his wife is auditioning for American Idol and then I have to walk up the hill for like seven blocks.

So on the one hand, I’m really glad it’s over, but on the other hand, there’s none of the festivity of the end of school. It kind of sucks I spent my last day dying of this horrible cold-thing and trying not to cry in front of people.

I really hope I don’t have Strep Throat, because it’s going around and I’ve got this throat thing. Actually I don’t really care if I have Strep Throat, providing it goes away by the kayaking symposium or at least doesn’t hinder my performance.

I’ve settled for a B in geography. At first I fought it, since I’m usually excellent in geography, but since I miss 50% of my classes for advanced latin, it’s pretty good. I could probably cram, then beg the teacher on my knees for a test, but she doesn’t want to give someone who was only present 50% of the time an A, and I just don’t have the energy to fight for a better grade anymore. And I have a big German test tomorrow, which will determine if I have a C or a B (I hope for the latter). I should be studying but I feel burnt out. Dance class- I should get my stuff now. I still have a computer class exam in two weeks from now and an interview for a book club presentation to write and a headache since I ate that PBJ yesterday- either the jelly was bad, or I’ve developed an allergy to peanut butter. I lived on peanut butter from when I was 11 ’till last year, so it makes me kinda sad but maybe the headache is stress induced anyway. We visited Sand in the City in gym class- now I know that I still love/hate sand, and that I still can’t play volleyball, and that coke, water and sand don’t mix-another thing that might have caused that headache. At least I was allowed to use the only pair of sunglasses when playing against the sun ’cause I have hard contacts… *further rambling*

I don’t get nauseous at all, and it usually takes a lot to make me dizzy, but the last time I went me and Amber made it spin so fast I couldn’t keep myself from falling over in the cup, though we had to slow down a bit at the end because we were laughing too hard XD It’s like when you’re a little kid and spin and spin and spin in a circle until you can’t stand up and fall down. But some of my friends get sick on stuff like that, so I understand.

omg the teacups ♥ At Disneyland, they’re right next to Matterhorn so we always joke that our teacup is going to go flying into the side of the mountain. It’s all about getting the best teacup man, totally cutthroat about it lol
It’s hilarious to watch the other people spinning though. I’ve seen some of the dads with their little kids really get into it!

aww man now I want to go to Disneyland even more than before.

We had a band competition at Great America in middle school. We also went there as our 8th grade class trip. I recall going on the rides aimed at little kids (in the middle of the school day when only band kids were there), playing lots of DDR, and almost going on the smallest roller coaster in the park before getting scared and deciding to hold my friends’ bags while they went on the ride.

I dragged my friend on it later, she didn’t like it so much, but tolerated it. She doesn’t like roller coasters too much either. It kept growing in sideways even after the tooth was pulled, so I had to get a retainer and wear it at least 12 hours a day (I managed to avoid wearing it to school). I had an awful overbite too- and one of my lower front ones was practically sideways. But now I just got rid of the retainer after three years *parties* And it got (almost completely) rid of my overbite. Try not to bite the dentist

Well. I had a most interesting afternoon.
Whilst sitting in my room, texting my friend and trying to decide whether I should include a green stripe in a bracelet I’m planning to make, I noticed a smallish animal meander by my porch. About the size of the cat, but certainly the wrong color. And wrong shape and…with a ringed tail and little mask. A quick glance at the clock confirmed my suspicions that this raccoon was out much too early to be acceptable (it was about quarter past 2). Standing safely inside my room I made noises, and the creature merely stared at me, wavering slightly on unsteady legs and then staggered of down the sidewalk. Definitely not well.
He went to the house, undoubtedly to eat the cat food, and I out on boots and headed out to warn mom and the friends who were over…they went home and Tim came back with a gun, but the raccoon disappeared and we couldn’t find it. So it’s still out there, somewhere. Makes one feel nice and safe, doesn’t it?
Ugh. Anyway, after cleaning up the porch (it threw up on the bricks outside, eeew) I’m now sick of the bleach smell and wet (took a shower) and wearing leftover clothing, as I’m all packed for going to a workshop tomorrow.
    Exciting, no?
I don’t really like the thought of the raccoon still being out there somewhere. *shudders* It was in a bad way. Poor little guy, I actually really like raccoons, of the healthy, mischievous and adorable type. But not when they’re staring me down over a bowl of cat food, then they’re kind of frightening. In any case, all I can really tell him is that I’ll be in town in August, but not untill then, since I’ll only have a few days (all of which are scheduled up already) when we get home next week before I’m gone again for a month. It’s just inconvenient.

I also need to contact the Niagara and figure out arrival plans and such.
And somehow order some marline (and have it come before I leave with enough time to make a ditty bag) and a rigger’s knife, if mom can’t make me one. The blade snapped on the one she was making, so now she has to start all over again. *is getting nervous*

You know what is incredibly embarrassing? When you send a few people an email for the first time, and realize after you send it that you got one of the email addresses wrong. So you go to your ‘Sent’ folder, and you send the email again, with the right address. And then you realize that you actually sent the darn thing to yourself. So then you go back again, and you send the email again, and you get it right, but by this time your email has ended up in the Trash, Koko knows how, and you’ve double posted to everyone else, and you’re worried all over again about what kind of first impression you’re going to make on these people. *headdesk* I don’t even know if the caking email went through anymore. Gods, why do I always mess everything up? *sigh*

And what’s even worse is to go back, check your email again, and realize that it didn’t go through the second time either…. *double headdesk*

I had a nice day today, even though I didn’t get to see the shuttle take off. I did a water station at a charity run and talked to one of my old teachers, and now I’m home alone, so nobody can throw me off the computer.

I am happy. Do you know why? *waits* Fine, I’ll tell you! Today was my dress rehearsal (for dance) and ’twas very fun. The little girls danced to a parody of “Material Girl” which was retitled “Cereal Girl”. I also got a new book (The Pocket Guide to Mischief, by Bart King) and *drum roll* MY MOTHER BOUGHT ME ABBEY ROAD!!!!!!!!!!!!!! *jumps up and down in hysterics* Yay!!!!

I am also freaked out. Do you know why? *waits* Fine, I’ll tell you! When I was at Borders, I saw *drum roll* “Soul Candy”. I wanted to take a picture of it, but Mom’s phone was in use. There over ten little bunnies… They were so adorable….*screams*
