Smooth or Chunky?

Robert writes:

I once read that men tend to like smooth ice cream, while women prefer ice cream with lumps and such in it (marshmallows, chocolate chunks, veins of caramel, etc.). That’s definitely true of me: except for mint chocolate chip (with very small chips), I like my ice cream smooth. How about you? The blog must know!

Feel free to broaden the discussion to peanut butter, if you like.

  1. *Sigh* I hate to give in to what’s scientiffically proven about the diffrences between Male and Female, But yes, alas, I do like mine chunky. For some very odd reason. I never really thought about Male and Female having diffrent tastes in Ice cream, but now come to think of it, my dad and little brother BOTH like to eat the smooth kind, and my mom and I preffer the chunky! Huh! Wierd how that works.
And now to add Peanut butter into this conversation!!! I LOVE PEANUT BUTTER!!! It’s my favorite food EVER!!!
I love it on crackers, and Ice cream, sandwiches, tortillas, Pita bread, Rice cakes and especially ICE CREAM!!!
We went to the store recentally, and we got Ice Cream for my brother and I, he got this vanilla fudge goop, (it tasted pretty god acually!) and I got this clocolate with PEANUT BUTTER!!!! (Also these little chhocolate chunks, yes chunks, that where full of peanut butter.)
    Yum, Yum.

  2. We have a thread for this?

I like both kinds of ice cream. I really couldn’t care less, except that I hate soft-serve with a bloody passion. I suppose that could count as smooth. And if you haven’t figured out my gender by now, you’re clueless and I don’t love you any more. (Hint: It’s not male.)

Peanut buter, however, is another matter entirely. Chunky peanut butter must be brutally burned at the stake. Grer.

i love peanut butter!! we get this all natural fresh buttered whatever peanut butter…can that be considered chunky? i dont know…hm.

well i hate the kind of peanut butter with the actual nuts floating around in it…so yeas.

  6. True enough that my favorite flavors are chunky — with mint chocolate chip at the top of the list, except not the stuff Robert likes, which doesn’t have the proper chocolate:ice cream ratio and tastes like grit.

On the other hand, I love sherbet, sorbets, ices, and soft serve (or frozen custard, as my dad still calls it), though I think of them as completely different food categories.

Peanut butter: absurdly crunchy or no point eating it. To get it right I have to make it myself (in practice this means I never eat it).

I have to wonder, though, if smooth vs. chunky is the whole question or part of the larger issue of texture in general. The texture fanatics I know — and I count myself among them — are all female. The people I know who could care less are all male. Coincidence, perhaps, but I’ve often wondered.

  10. Women eat, on the average, 80% more sorbet than men and 45% more soft serve. They also display a more marked preference toward hot fudge sundaes, while males tend to eat more malts. Women seem to dislike malts and prefer smooth shakes to chunky ones.

I prefer any kind of ice cream I can get over any kind I can’t. I also prefer chunky peanut butter over smooth because chunky has more flavor. And I adore malts, especially chocolate, though I had a green tea malt once and it was pretty good, I must say.

I’ve heard that men tend to favor having desserts a la mode (with ice cream) than not, but I’m not sure. Even with smooth ice cream.

I find baked alaska extremely difficult to manage. And I remember that all the males in the

But if you consider the pulpless smooth and the pulp-filled chunky, I like chunky orange juice…..
Boy, that sounds like a weird kind of orange juice. Can you imagine them trying to sell it on the shelves of the supermarket? 0.o

  13. Ice cream is better chunky, because the chunks taste good. Soft serve is OK. On peanut butter, my opinion varies(usually the opposite of what’s in the house), but locally made is better. Pulpy orange juice is good. (I’m a girl)

  17. I love most kinds of ice cream. But which kind do I love most, smooth or chunky? Smooooth. Unless it’s Cherry Garcia. The extreme tastiness of those chocolate and cherry chunks compensates for the loss of pure creaminess.

Here’s why I generally like smooth best:
    1) The texture is fab.
    2) The chunks usually don’t have much taste because they’re frozen — and unlike the cream part, they don’t melt much in your mouth. They tend to stay frozen. Unless they are chocolate.

  18. Ever had Phish Food? That’s almost enough to convert me to chunky. As for peanut butter, I go back and forth.

    Pie 0

  19. I love mint chocolate chip ice cream, but I don’t like the chocolate chip part. I wish they just made a “mint” ice cream. So in that sense, I like smooth better.

My favorite kind of ice cream, though, is moose tracks, and that has mini peanut-butter cups in it. So in that sense, I like chunky better.

As for peanut butter, I can’t have nuts that aren’t ground up, etc…so I can’t have chunky. In that sense, I like smooth.

    Pie 0

  20. I deffinatley prefer chunky peanutbutter.
As for ice cream, I like smooth, but the reason I think I prefer it chunky is the crunchyness. As Rosanne said, you can’t taste it to much, but I like having something to chew on.

I’m female. I like whatever kind of ice cream is put in front of me. Phish sounds great! I love chunky, because I like the taste of the things in the chunks. Rosanne is right though: sometimes they really do lose their flavor. I like the texture of smooth, but other than the taste, that’s the only reason I like it.

  35. I’m a girl and I’d never given it much thought before, but in fact most of my favorite ice cream flavors are indeed chunky (cookie dough, various kinds of candy pieces in vanilla ice cream, chocolate ice cream with brownie chunks in it, etc.). Can’t say the same for peanut butter, though – I’ve always preferred smooth. However, as far as ice cream is concerned, I don’t usually stop to consider whether it’s smooth or chunky. My favorite flavors are chunky, but if you give me ice cream, I’ll eat it no matter what flavor or texture it is. Yum! :)

  48. The Peanut Butter Bender flavor by Hagen (I think) is pretty good. Although, i’m biased because, i admit it, i’m a female and i like chunky ice cream. Although I absolutely loathe and despise those hideous marshmellow chunks. I like plain marshmellows, and frozen ones are even better, but not in ice cream. Never in ice cream. Things that go in ice cream MUST be either crunchy, or melt in your mouth Usually when i eat ‘cream with chuncks, I sift them out with my teeth, swallow the ‘cream, and then crunch the chunks. But marshmellows, they just sit there getting squashed, and since they’re in tiny bits, bounce back and don’t get properly chewed. I do really like coffee ice cream though. If anybody on here has never had it, go eat it now! Hmm… Cherry Garcia? Phish? Could it be that our admins are…hippies?!

My brother, 6 years of age. He would be upset if the ice cream we got didn’t have chunks in it. (That isn’t true, exactly. He likes chunks, but he likes any kind of ice cream he can get his tongue on.)

I’m a vegetarian, and I get a lot of protein from peanut butter. And I like A LOT OF PEANUT BUTTER!!! I have been known to use half the jar in one sandwich, whereupon I’m not hungry for the rest of the day. In fact, If the world blew up like in H2G2, I would probably go into peanut butter withdrawal and twitch in the corner of a spaceship for weeks.

From what I’ve read, Hydrogenated oils are oils that have hydrogen added to them. If left out, they will solidify at room teperature, which should give you some idea what they do to your heart. Crisco and most shortenings are basically pure hydrogenated oil. Of course, all pies throw on MuseBlog have expeller pressed oil instead, which is totally different and not half as bad.

Do I have that right, GAPAs?

In fact, you could put this in your Q&A column!

What are Hydrogenated Oils, and how do they affect your body?

And on a completely different subject—-
I went to a very small gelateria and got Green Tea and Chocolate Malt gelato mixed. It was DELICIOUS!!!

However, not something to do in Italy…..

    Pie 0

  78. Ötzi (104),
Yep, hydrogenated oils are made by adding extra hydrogen. The appeal is that hydrogenated oils are more solid than unhydrogenated oils. Solidity can be useful if you’re trying to create something that spreads on your bread like butter — instead of running all over it like oil. Partially hydrogenated oils are used a lot in processed foods, no doubt because they’re usually cheaper than real butter but have a similar texture. They also have a longer shelf life.

But the problem is it’s looking like partially hydrogenated oils increase the risks of getting heart disease and clogged arteries and probably some other disease too.

Hey, maybe I WILL use this for a Q&A.

  82. girl. Chunky. I have only had smooth peanut butter because my brother is allergic to peanuts (curses) and i have only had it at a friend’s house and they only like smooth. i would like chunky better though.

  83. I like smooth peanut butter better than chunky, but I like chunky too. Chunky ice cream is only good if it’s chocolate chip cookie dough.

  85. I definitely like chunky peanut butter to eat by itself, like if you’re snacking with your finger…it’s good just by itself, and better than smooth for such purposes – but sandwiches? Smooth peanut butter is much better for sandwiches because it’s just more pleasant to spread and eat between bread.
