While people finish the required reading for the World Religions: Judaism thread, here’s a place where MuseBloggers can talk about their own religions or other religions they’ve experienced. The Judaism thread will be closed until someone is ready to summarize the relevant chapter of Huston Smith’s book.
Continued from the MBers’ Religions thread that started in May.
first post?
Sorry for senseless post grubbing and double posting. My first first post, though! *does first post dance, which involves juggling, blowing bubbles, and the trombone*
So that I’m not completely off topic: I haven’t yet read the required reading. I come from an interfaith family and I’m not sure what I believe.
I’m an atheist. For more information, go get a copy of Salmon of Doubt and read Douglas Adams’ thoughts on the subject.
Quaker. Not really, though. Not hard-core.
I’m atheist….sort of. I belive in something, but, I’m sure what.
Voodooism sounds worth looking into.
See P&S thread…
“or experienced…”
Well, I’ve “experienced” Mormonism before, I guess…
Guy: Will you read this book? It’s a very good book. The Mormon church is always open to new members. It has the truth in it…
Me: look, man, I’m sure its a great book, and a great religion. But…No thanks.
Guy: but…
Me: I said, NO THANKS.
I have nothing against Mormons, but that is just too much…
I’m Quaker as well. I’m not actively participating in a Meeting right now, but I’d like to be.
I’m an Athiest, but one of my friends is a wiccan, a couple christain, and one jewish.
i’m a really into psi, but that’s not a religon. Oh, and GAPAS: What’s yours?
Also, I would like an article on video games.
er, you mean a thread, right? this isn’t a direct route to the editors of muse, you know. in fact, that should probably be on the hg2mb…
I’d rather keep my religious beliefs off the Internet since many people discriminate because of religion — and unlike most MuseBloggers, my posts are under my real name!
Besides, the blog isn’t about us. We’re just part of the system–“user-compatible liveware,” as Garry Trudeau once put it in Doonesbury.
7.) Naah, that’s just someone being overzealous. There are people like that in every religion. I am “Mormon” as you say, but I prefer the term, “Latter Day Saint” as that is what we are really called. My grandfather happens to live in a place where lots of people hate LDS people, and he has had people tell him that all mormons “will go to [heck].” My grandfather’s favorite saying is, “If all us Mormons are goin’ to heck, at least I know I’ll like the people there!”
I am sorry you had a bad experience with our religion. It is very difficult to truly believe in something and not want to share it with the world, and every person you come across.
YES!
THANKYOU THANKYOU THANKYOU THANKYOU THANKYOU THANK YOU THANKYOU THANKYOU THANKYOU THANKYOU THAANKYOU THANKYOU THANKYOU THANKYOU THANKYOU THANKYOU THANKYOU THANKYOU THANKYOU THANKYOU THANKYOU THANKYOU THANKYOU!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
okay, breath, breath, breath…
ahem.
I am an atheist – that is, I am part of the Church of the Flying Spaghetti Monster.
Yes, go FSM!
for those of you who don’t know, FSM is simply a parody on God – wait, what am I saying! IT IS GOD!
*snickers*
do you want more info?
sorry – i’m hyper on cherries…
*blinks at post #16, then goes off to retrieve religion list*

There you are. First Sorceress, your name has dots after it because it is too long for me to type so I shortened it. You may notice yourself on more than one item. You may pick more than one. Tell me if you wish to me added to the list.
I’m the same as Trav.
That was just a weird name for Ships Log.
17) I resent that!
LDS people are Christians too.
18- are you talking to me? are you telling me you’re athiest and to put you on the list? because you’re there allready.
Hold on, I’ll go back and tweak the list slightly.
19- LDS are a denomination of Christianity. People who don’t asociate themselves with a denomination and just think of themselves as generaly Christian are put in that category. I’m not saying that LDS isn’t Christian. If you would like, I’ll put you in Christian and LDS.
(17) Yesss for mixed bag of random belief-ers! WOOHOO!
(19) I frankly think that anyone who believes in Chirst is Christian. But people always say: Are you Catholic or Christian? I’m like: WHAT THE HACK THEY’RE THE SAME THING!
It annoys me. Belief in Christ=Christianity.
Durp, guys.
22) yesh! Or a section called, “christian” and different sects of christians in there. And that with jewish and atheism and all that.
23) Agreeing! They are, just a different belief in the same thing.
Judaism is quite fun, but I’d like to be an atheist. I do want my kids to be Bar-Bat Mitzvah’d, though. I am torn! Any advice?
15: I don’t understand hatred of any religion. It happened alot in the 1500s, which is why I’m here, instead of in Europe… What bugged me about the guy on the plane was that he asked me to tell him about my religion, and when I did, he decided it wasn’t worth respecting.
I don’t even think there IS a hell. Or maybe there is, but it is reserved for people like Hitler.
Nobody goes to hell because of thier religion
17- hey!
im not on there!
ok…
mom protestant, but not religious, dad jewish, ditto.
self, agnostic. but only in an acedemic sense.like, i think god is a LOT les likely than aliens. bhuddism is the only thing that seems reasonable, but still, it seems like people wanting something so they dont get all depressed whn they die. Not to be offensve, but i think that the christian bible is morally wrong. (well some parts). Like adultry. so, female meets male, get married, yay! oh wait, i hate you…. so, what do i do? also, bible exremely sexist. Aalso, very discrimanatory towards gays. also say “anyone who doesnt believe will burn in hell.” not that i think all christians believe in this, but some do, and thats basically what the bible says. phew.
I don’t believe in hell. But I do believe in the Otherworld, which is sorta like heaven…yeah.
Can the next Relgion thread be about Islam? I think that’s a really interesting one & it seems like it’d be very useful to know about.
Also, I had no idea that you could be just plain Orthodox. I always though you had to be an Orthodox Jew or something like that. Interesting.
26. ) I know.
25-kids?
arent you…
in fifth grade?
but anyways, you can be non-religiously bar/bat mitzvahed. lots of my friends have.
29- I think the plan was to sort-of go in order according to time-when-created, so it’s christianity, the islam. maybe.
That’s the idea. But everyone on the radio and TV is talking about Islam nowadays, so I’ll go straight to it if you want to. I know a fair amount about it.
Radical atheist. Firmly against organized religion. Also known as Luciferianism (atheism against organized religion and searching for spiritual fulfillment other than religion)
Hi. I’m a spirtual Athiest. AND I’m new.
there was a letter t the walmart people going around saying that they should stop selling the bible because it A)calls for the murder of almost all walmart employees (who work on the sabbath) B) Murder of all female employees and C) murder of all homosexual employees. since the bible incites to murder, i will henceforth define it as an OBSCENE book.
and I agree with DLOD. How old are you anyway?
Who?
31- yes I am, but its never too early to think about the future..
DLOD
I’m jewish, and I don’t understand why all these subcategories of christianity are so seperate. There are TONS of different jewish sects and they all get stuck under one lable. 38- I completly agree. I’m the kind of person that’s been on college board since 2nd grade. It’s perfectly normal to plan for the future. (my friends call me the overprepaird girl scout. I always carry everything needed for any situation. Laugh if you want. Meanwhile, I was the only one who stayed dry.)
Oh, and welcome Harmony with short red hair. Very nice name by the way. Do you actually have short red hair. Wait, that might be off topic.
Harmony with short red hair, a jolly welcome to ye!
*pies horrifically*
Okay, I’m glad there’s a religions list…
Come on, you atheists, join the Church of the Flying Spaghetti Monster and become a pasta… pasta… oh forget it, I can’t remember what we’re called.
Anyways, join! And happily do a parody on God.
—
Pirates were the chosen ones of The FSM. Since there are so few pirates nowadays, there’s more global warming, hurricanes, etc.
—
I ordered the Gospel of the FSM from the library today. Yay!
I definitely wouldn’t mind skipping Christianity for a while. That seems to be one that most people know a good deal about already.
Robert, can I discuss on religions if I’ve read about Judaism in a different religion book? (It’s a book on religions of the world.) Can we talk about Zoroastarianism? (how do you spell that?)
34- isn’t a group of people who are against organized religion a group of people with common beliefs and therefor a religion?

I’m radical atheist, elassë~adael (bitterrose). I know I said otherwise in the second post on the thread, but I just looked up the definition. Rock it, Fridgey! Hey elassë~adael, may I call you Elabit? Thanks.
10-Pass me the Stupid Hat. What’s PSI?
25-Let the kids choose? Oh, did I say that? Sorry. What’s the attraction of the BarM or BatM, anyway? The party? The specialness? The money? Sorry, that was cynical. I don’t take it back, though.
40-It’s the Boy Scouts who have got to be prepared. Look up the Tom Lehrer song. And anyway, Ivy League colleges have problems. Why was there a College Board in 2nd grade? What’s the point?
43-Wasn’t it pastafarian?
Islam? Someone mentioned it? But weren’t we supposed to go in chronological order and start with Hinduism? I’m confused. Oh well, here goes something:
Hinduism-This is actually a really confusing religion to a Western non-believer. I mean, why are cows sacred? I know they are, but why? And there’s the Brahman concept, but then the individual gods and goddesses-Shiva and so on. So does that make it monotheistic or polytheistic? One of the things I plan to do before I’m fifty is to write a science fiction book about a Hindu theocracy. In a civil war. Personally, I understand Sikhism better, but that’s because I’ve had more discussions with Sikhs. It’s not personal or anything. Also, residual magic seems to have a sort of unofficial place in this religion I’d really like to know more about.
Islam-Sadly, everyone is now going to associate Islam with militant Islam, which is a whole different bunch of coconuts, but that’s unavoidable. People who worship rocks are a tiny bit strange, but they have a right to do so if they choose. I think on the whole the Western world’s perception of Islam is distorted. Many people say Islam is anti-female, but I don’t think it is at all. They forget how many women choose to wear the veil, similar to how many Western women choose to wear the cross, become stay-at-home moms, not have premarital sex, and so on. Also, may I just say once and for all that the whole thing about the 70 virgins is really, really, really WEIRD? And I saw an article the other day about how in Egypt there are now women-only beaches where Muslim women can wear bikinis and suntan under the protection of guards and with only women. I think this is a great idea. Fun and religious rights! Yay!
(47) – YES! Pastafarians! come be a pastafarian…
Why is “radical atheist” seperate from “atheist”? An atheist is an atheist… you can’t have different levels of not believing in any god… it’s like having levels of the color white (or black). Either your and atheist or your not. If your not atheist, your spiritual or agnonstic. But your not “less atheist” or “more atheist”.
47
1 To adress the comment about me, you tell me the boyscouts are the prepaired ones. These are the geniuses who thought it would be a great idea to sell popcorn door to door. Plus, we always bring everything needed for camping, not “roughing it” ’cause we forgot the tents.
2. I come from a reform jewish family and I was bas mitzvahed. Only 2 of my friends could come, it was 105 degrees outside, and the “party” was held at 1:30 in my basement. But I still loved it. The ceremony represents a transition into adulthood. I think it’s important for your kids to know your backround and culture. It’s not like an optional, fun thing. It’s a big commitment and responsibility. Alot of people don’t understand this and just take it as a joke. But it’s a tradition that has lasted thousands of years and you implying its stupid is a very narrow view. Maybe you should learn more about things befor you put them down.
I’m under the impression that a radical atheist is someone firmly against religion. (like me. but I might be wrong in my interpretation)
I’m also a Luciferian. before you say anything, it’s about re-defining lucifer, who was originally the “Bringer of Light” (that’s what Lucifer actually means) and is about finding spiritual satisfaction through science or introspection. (No, I did NOT lift this from Dan Brown. It’s fact.)
45: and since are common beliefs the same as religion?
50-Cool it about the Boy Sc., man. It’s only a song by Tom Lehrer. That’s all it is. People’s definitions of what’s needed for camping. Mine own camp is seven weeks, Maine, all girls, no bathroom. Shoot me. And anyway, maybe I just have prejudices because my father has facial scars (not mental, physical) from his own bar mitzvah. Also, it annoys me that people can’t pronounce it correctly. I try not to be picky about semantics, but still. In most suburban families (hold your weapons, I said ‘most’) it turns into a sort of ‘My Super Sweet Sixteen’ affair with police and nervy Bs. I’m not an anti-Semitist: I’m just a cynic who doesn’t understand people’s *irrational* {yes, I said that. Shoot me for going for your weak spot.} religious beliefs, cultural traditions, and {here I go again, ready the cannons} oddities. And where did I imply that anything was ‘stupid’? Come on, man, I’ve got better vocabulary than that.
51-That’s cool. The definition of a radical atheist for me is someone who has eschewed all religion, which is really the same thing. I hate it when people ask if I mind not getting Christmas presents. I have a birthday, Towel Day, and TLAPD, for zark’s sake.
47-i agree with everything you said, but do you really know as a certainty that god or a godlike entity does not exist?(scenario:everything we see is fake, made up by god, to make us not believe in him/her/it.)why? shut up. i dont know.
but its possible. same logic disallows ruling out of alien prescence. oh wait… i forgot. god doesnt exist because of the babel fish
52- I really don’t think that being a agnostic/reform jew counts as having irrational religious beliefs. I don’t keep kosher, go to temple, etc. And I have hassidic cousins, I know what irrational religious beliefs are. I accept other beliefs and view them with an open mind. I just feel very strongly about judaism as a culture. I’m sorry for the “stupid” comment. Would you prefer unintelligent? Nescient? Unwitting? Imbecilic? Mindless? Benighted? Take your pick.
Who goes to camp in Maine?
With no bathroom?
Fyi- Being so unnacepting in my view says that your just as bad as anyone super-religious. Your so stuck on what you think is right you can’t even contemplate that any intelligent person might think differently.
hey everyone!!! ramadan starts sunday!!!!!!!! sry…im not muslim really, i just fast for a lot of ramadan…its pretty awesome.
welcome harmony with short hair! am i on the welcoming commitee?
54-Another girl scout? I’m not alone! What level are you? How do you feel about Uniquely Me? What do you think about the changing of the levels that’s going to happen in 2007(i think)?
So I’m not completely off topic- Rosh Hashana is Friday night.
And welcome to Harmony, with short red hair.*pies*
57- I was a girl scout since I was five but my juniors troup broke up just before we would have flown up. Sorry.
47- sure. Also, do you want to be put into Radical Athiest and removed from Athiest or kept in both? And why would you mind not getting Christmas presents? It’s a religious holiday of a religion you don’t celebrate. Why would you want them?
52- Why irrational? There are reasons behind Jewish beliefs. They aren’t irrational.

just curious, why are people the religions you are? i’m not saying you shouldn’t be, i’m just curious.
I’m a pastafarian (Chuch of the Flying Spaghetti Monster) because… well… my parents aren’t religious so I’m not either and then I found out about the really cool FSM so now I’m part of that.
to summarize: BLAME MY PARENTS
—
by the way, I’ve given up trying to make a new name, so I’m back to Bellatrix.
srry.
most people are of a certain religion because of their parents or because of where they were born. few people choose a religion by actually thinking about it.
60- i have acrtually thought about it, and thought about it so i did think about it to get to tthe point i am tody. my parent sare orthadox jews, so at the moment i kinda am to, but i’m probably growing up to be an observnt conservative jew cause i agree more with some of their ideas. but i do agree wtih frigid symphony about most poepl not thinking. also, many people aren’t even allowed to think about other options cause their parents would disown them or something to that effect.
the first lesson my mom was tought about religion was “No matter where you stand, there is always some one to the right and to the left”
i go to quaker school.
i have jewish relatives.
i went to jewish preschool.
most of my relatives are christian.
my parents are athiest.
i hav no idea where i stand.
oops psoting agian but i just decided i wanna b a pastafarian.
62- Ahem says the living exception! I was raised Catholic. Do you see my name under Catholic on the list? Nope! I must have thought about it! yup, I did! you are right that most people don’t think though.
60- I am what am today (sorta Jewish sorta Quaker sorta both sorta random things) because I thought about various things and discovered my opinions on them and came up with my religious thoughts. Said thoughts mingled together. Meanwhile, I was going to a public elementary school but going to Catholic Sunday school on Sundays. I did not go to Mass very often. Whilst I was doing these things, at an estimate of age 7 I joined the local JCC (Jewish Community Center) because my parents joined because it was nearby and a good place to excercise. I began to meet people through the JCC and do many activities there. Over the years I found myself more and more involved in the JCC and less and less in my church and it came to the point where, last year, when both invited me to join teen leadership programs, I chose the one at my JCC. This summer, I went to a quaker meeting and I like the beliefs of both Judaism and Friends. I don’t really know specifically what religion I am. I’d say Reform Judaism maybe, though technically I’m a Catholic.
54-All religious beliefs are irrational. ALL of them. I have no respect for tradition, and in fact, I could be said to have no respect for anything. Culture isn’t important. Stop taking everything so seriously and back off a little. This is a stupid argument, and neither of us will ever lose ground-I have intellect behind mine and you’ve got precedent.
59-Both listings is fine, if no one objects. I should hate to offend anyone. I don’t mind not getting presents at all-I work to have money if I require or desire something.
60-I thought about it for a while, and found that what I thought fit in with what Adams thought, and what some of the Dadaists thought. That’s the simple version.
The reason I’m not agnostic is that even if there is a god out there, and he’s impressed by that sort of Clintonian, gormless, wishy-washing hair-splitting bish, I’d choose not to worship anyway. I’m not suppressing my instinct because the mass of humans do.
I have not found a belief with sufficient proof yet. Evolution and physics work well during the past 13,000,000,000 years, but once we reach the Big Bang, then I start wondering if God had something to do with it. I mean, first there is nothing, then there is a cataclysmic explosion, then a high-energy stew of subatomic particles rocketing outward. Science doesn’t really give a satisfactory explanation for that. I suppose I could be called an agnostic.
68- the way I figure, God made the big bang and then things happend from there. Or maybe not.
67- I’m intellectual thank you very much. Just because I sorta follow religions doesn’t mean I’m intelectual. Religion is rational. I’ll explain keeping Kosher to you if you’d like.
I think I sort of understand the point of fasting, but fundamentally, all beliefs are irrational and so is all reason. You may say this takes away the meaning of the word ‘irrational’, and you’re probably right.
I love how everyone on the blog, and especially on this thread, takes one word in one of my posts that I use in relation to my position or that of another Museblogger, and twists it around so that I manage to mortally offend everyone with one swell foop. It’s amazing.
“Isn’t it enough to see that a garden is beautiful without having to believe that there are fairies in the bottom of it, too?”-Douglas Adams
You know, there are other theories besides the Big Bang. Or Bang Big, as someone I know says. Scientific theories, too. You might try looking them up sometime-I thought it was fun.
in fact there’s a new theory stating that the big bang was a collision of particles from an OTHER universe. Okay, this is getting too big for me…
hmm…
I ALWAYS thought that the particles of our system came from another universe…
I guess i missed something…
67-wait… ithought being agnostic meant that you think that there is a possiblility of there being a god. if not, i may not be agnostic. do you have a different idea of agnosticism? because, i probably wouldent worship a god if he/she/it existed too.
64.) 0.o That’s all I have to say. 0.o
67- One, asuming your smarter than everyone (“I have intellect behind mine..) because you feel nobody else could be intelligent and still religious to any extent is very narrow minded. I’ll have you know that I have highly above average intelligence (my test scores are in the top 99% in the country, and I have won the county-wide science fair 3 years running, not to brag, just to prove a point) and so do many other other religious people I know. I personally am very doubtful that there is a human-like entity called god ruling over everything we do but I do think there is a force behind everything, like energy. That does not mean that some people are not intelligent if they feel comforted by the idea that there is a god. By the way, there’s been a lot of support for the big bang theory and little for others. That’s why it’s the commonly excepted theory and has gotten so much publicity.
P.S. Sorry for dragging this out so long. It’s been a long time since I’ve had a good debate.
IMO god is an illusion designed by men to explain what we can’t explain ourselves. But the illusion got too big and it took us over. now we can’t do without. I can only hope for a rapid fall of christianity, it’s dying out already, that should be sufficient proof that it’s unneeded.
74-im very confused now…
77-yup.
probably.
but there of course is a chance that what the bible sayeth is true.
just like there is a chance that we’re all controlled by aliens.
79- no leader1 we have been discovered? how shall we proceed? awaiting orders from jupiter. repeat awaiting orderes from jupiter
*interplanitary transmiter beam fails*
and many people take the bible as a metaphor anyway.
and the bible has been proved true in small ways. it is scientifically possiable for everything it said to have happened. the timing is unlikely, but still.
FrigidSymphony, why are you so antireligious?
71- that makes sense to me. but then you think “where did that universe come from?” and you start it all over again…
75- agreed. Juliette, as much as you seem insulted by us being insulted by you, you are sounding a little arrogant. I accept that your beliefs differ from mine, do you accept that with mine?

urgh, my mom woke me up @ 8:30 for Confirmation class. I don’t want to confirm. I feel it ties me to one religion when I want to explore others. I know there is SOMEthing/person/entity/god/goddess type thingie up there, bit I don’t know what my true path to he/she/it is. I was raised Congregational Protestant, ( the same type of puritanism that ran rampant to create the Salem Witch trials), but I’d like to learn more particularly about Buddhism, Islam, Hinduism and the Quaker faith before I decide what I am.
I’m antireligious because in my view religion is a negative aspect of humanity, which forces a certain behaviour and urges violence (with exceptions, of course). Of course, spending a year in a catholic school with idiots trying to convert me with blind dogma didn’t do much to help… Also my knowledge of European history constantly shows how religion is in the end usually the cause for any major conflict, or if not, used as one. It’s to easy to say “In the name of God, go kill so-and-so”, because the masses are (unfortunately) stupid and unthinking, and mob psychology kicks rational and calm thinking in the gut and leaves it dying in the sewer.
84- nice metaphor
84- are you denying all the good in religion, or are you of the belief that the bad outways the good?

this thread seems to be dying…
I’m not denying all the good in religion, because there is some good, but that good doesn’t need a corrupt dogmatic organization behind. Morality does NOT need religion. There will be good people without religion (probably even more)
92-noooooooooo!
dont say that!
93- I don’t think there’s anything wrong with religion, religion has alot of good ideas, alot of which we don’t listen to.
religion has been used as an excuse to go out and kill zillions of people since the beginning of time. that is why i have no religion altho i do enjoy arguing theology even though i do not believe in god. if god wants me to believe in him/her, he/she can jolly well come down and tell me him/herself!
95-religion has a lot of good ideas, bu do we really need eligion to tell us that it’s bad to kill, or steal stuff?
97- I don’t, but maybe some people do.
98-that was a rhetorical question, but since you answered it, why?
change mine.I am not any religion.
Whooo….got back to this thread! And only randomly read the comments.
I don’t exactly believe in good and evil. Sorry, but they’re social standarts. What’s thought of as good in one society could be considered evil in another. Hence, it’s useless to associate anything with them.
I like to refer to or think of things as being productive or counter-productive.
I’m agnostic, but I seriously doubt the existence of any sort of “higher power.” Of course, there’s always that small chance. Best to remain objective about it.
Please don’t take that as an attack, I’m just stating my conclusions.
67- HUZZAH! Tradition is so overrated. To put it nicely. To put it bluntly, it’s completely and totally ridiculous, idiotic, and it interferes with any sort of logical advancement. I have a cool quote on this; I’ll post it when I get home.
59- Technically, in the US, Xmas was secularized. Like, officially and all….not sure about the specifics….ah, well.
I think I’ll write another article for el periodico [yeah, I’m missing an accent] de mi escuela about the stupidity and bigotry of the Xmas vacation. It’s a public school, and the calender does have the word “Christmas” on it. They couldn’t even call it a winter break or something similar…
ThinkGeek used to have wrapping paper that said, “HAVE A SATISFACTORY NON-DENOMINATIONAL WINTERTIME GIFT-GIVING HOLIDAY.” I wanted it so bad.
I hate Xmas holidays. I hate gifting. But people get all emotional at me if I don’t get them any. Especially my lovely mother. Who thinks she needs to save my soul.
16- w00t, FSM. I love telling people that I’m a Pastafarian!
Phoenix, this is in reply to your post on the random Oct. thread-
you’re in luck (and you’d better read this because I just searched Deuteronomy for it, well I was lazy and only searched part of Deut.) anyway Deut 20: (last part of) 10 “Take the women and children as slaves” this is talking about a nation you’re going to war with. Then Deut 15: 12-15 “If any of you buy Israelites as slaves, you must set them free after six years And don’t just tell them they are free to leave- give them sheep and goats and a supply of grain and wine…” Somewhere else it says that if you kidnap an Israelite, you will be killed. So I guess I have to let you go, but that’s okay because I don’t know what I’d do with a slave. (and what would you do with sheep, goats, grain, and wine, not that I could get any to give you)
