first post?
human supremesists are realy starting to get on my nerves.
Ha. Second post. Yesssss…
My thing lately has been schools that have to dumb down everything imaginable to fit the needs of an average American/third-grader. I’ve been going mad due to that…The therapist thought I was depressed.
How’s this for a headline?: “U.S. Experts: War Spreads Terrorism”.
What is a human supremacist?
3- people who think humans are superior to everyother life form.
2- hilarious. but not, if you get what i mean.
So today smallwood definitely managed to turn english class into a political discussion. We were talking about heros and whatnot, and he started mentioning how sometimes people are considered heroes after they’re dead, and then he went into how everybody hates presidents when they’re in office, but not afterwards, and then i was like “oh dear, he’s dead if he tries that” and then yes, he mentioned Bush and said “well maybe in 20 years when we learn about him in history he won’t seem so bad” Of course he’s saying this in B*****, which is like insanely liberal and has about four republicans that i know of, two of which don’t like bush anyway and one of which i’m not sure about. But anyway, we were all kinda just like “meh, we are NOT going to be drawn into a political discussion this early in the morning with our english teacher we all think is incredibly lame” So we didn’t really argue. But afterwards, lizzy said a suitable punishment would be to lock him in a room with chappelle. I said aaron adams, but she’s like “no that’s cruel, i wouldn’t do that to anyone” and i had to agree.
so that’s the random story of the day. w00t.
Try Cindy Sheehan, if he’s a Bush Supporter.
YAY! a new one! te old 1 was getting kinda… well old.
1-um im afraid to say that i consider myself a human supremist. any reason i shouldent? i mean, we kinda are the most inteligent race on earth. oh…. wit… i see. oh. im not a human supremist after all.
2-well, no duh. lol. read an article in model un today, from the new yorker. depressing. genocide in darfur,no1 wants to help. president of sudan says its made up by scandinavians and zoinists (the genocide) ummm yeah. and china cant help because it economically helps them. no middle eastern or asian countries can help becasue they hate america, and western civ. hmmmm could we perhaps blame this on conservatives? and we wont help, cuz, you know how we are. so, it ends up with the only countries helping are sub-saharan african countries, with no weps gear etc. and there are about 7000 of em. so they really dont do anyhing. they help, cuz the’re afraid of genocide themselves ore than they h8 america.
to firther make the un do nothing, the current secritary general, kofi annan, sayd no to genocide, passionatly, but the leader of the race to become the new sec gen wont even acknowladge hat rwanda was a genocide. they even made a movie about it!!! lol. so, thats my ran on the horrid state of the world due to stupid conservative westerners.
7- you consider yourself part of the most intellagent species? on what grounds/because we can build bombs? because of new york city?
but if you will at least consider the possability that an alien might be smarter then you, then you are at least not as bad as some idiots i know.
Profound moral and philosophical question:
What is so great about being intelligent?
9- it gives you the ability to solve your own prolems. (instic does not learn, i.e. you make thesame mistakes over and over, with intellagence, you learn and don’rt keep making the sma emistakes.)
of course, by that definition humans are among the dumbest creatures ever.
60 in the october issue thread:
Now why in hell should I be jealous because nothing happens in Switzerland? I don’t WANT anything to happen. We have a great country, still with a direct democracy, and we proudly rule.
8- Let me just say, mice.
12- hahahaha. but i am talking about other animals as well. we say- look we invented this and animals didn’t so we must be smarter. except now we got oursleves into a big stupid mess. the universe i s a better place since humans can’t leave the solar system and can just barely leave the planet.
Condi Rice is doing a good job on her job.
“Oh no, the elephant stepped on the rug! That sounded a little redundant. So this really isn’t a bad day for you, is it?”
7: Don’t you mean “zionists”, not “zoinists”??
#2- Oh,Yes. Very muchly. I hate classes that I can SLEEP through and get a ~95 in. Without waking up. This year i was supposed to have a lunch, but then I couldn’t take all the classes I wanted to. So I dropped lunch and took Wind Ensemble. Aparently I’m the only person to have ever done this. -grumble-
14- elaborate
how do you feel about november after this foley sandal?will the dems get the sente or the reppblokins (SP!!)
19- reppblokins?!? might you mean republicans?
2- that’s why I highly recommend homeschooling
10. Ability to think, however, does not bring happiness in all situations. In school, for example, most classes are taught so that a third grader might understand them. If one has the intelect of a fourth grader, then one suffers from extreme boredom.
More generally, though, I would much rather be happy and oblivious than perceptive and miserable. Ignorance is bliss. What you don’t know can’t hurt you. Etc.
11 (FS)- May I quote myself from the October issue discussion thread? “I am terribly sorry for where I was born.”
There is a whole lot a fourteen-year-old can do to switch countries, isn’t there? The wealth of options boggles my mind.
7 (dlod)- They made a movie about global warming destroying civilization as we know it in a week. Don’t mean that it’s true. Yes, I believe that what happened in Rwanda was genocide, what’s happening in Darfur is genocide, and we need to do something to stop it. But the fact that they made a (wonderful) movie about it isn’t proof.
Also, capital letters are your friends.
2~ a headline in our paper read: “French Tanks Join Peacekeeping Force In Beirut.”
22~ I would much, much rather be perceptive. Ignorance is bliss- until you are unaware that the delicious burger you just ate has cow excrement in it, and die of E. Coli because you haven’t read the news. Because I’ve done research and projects on things like Factory Farming, I’ve learned to steer clear of foods that might make me sick, like meats and milks treated with anitibiotics (breeding supergerms). This is especially important because I have a propensity towards a type of infection that, if rendered untreatable by antibiotics, could concievably kill me. I now no longer eat meat, except for fish, and I prefer soy or Organic dairy products. (not to mention that Factory Farming is hugely unethical and cruel to the animals it victimizes. Look it up)
Knowledge is power.
24: That sounds to me an awful lot like it came from some paranoid schizophrenic… But then again, I might be wrong. I admit, I always make sure the fillet I’m eating is swiss meat and not italian. or french. or *shudder* chinese…
23: That’s not the point. You’re born where you’re born, and then you’re screwed. I’m not attacking anyone on a personal level, I’m simply stating that in america you don’t… oh what the hell, I’m not going to go through my rant again.
24. Without our excessive inteligence there would be no factory farms, nor overuse of antibiotics.
27: you said that YOU would much rather be ignorant. If everyone had been ignorant, that wouldn’t have been a problem…
but now ignorance is really, really dangerous. These things may not have been a problem if everyone was ignorant, but they are now.
We also wouldn’t have the vaccines and medicines that keep us from dying of Smallpox and Measles, the computer you are typing on, the books you read, the clothes you wear… we wouldn’t even have MUSE!
Intelligence combined with ethics is what is needed. It is obviously unethical to treat animals the way they are treated in those farms… beak removal, suffocation, downer cows dying slow and painful deaths with no access to food or water… the people who do these things have the intelligence to know that it boosts thier profits, but they choose to remain ignorant of the unethicality of the practice.
Intelligence needs a switch. Turn intelligence off in school and turn it on for ‘the real world’. Anway, what is “the real world” we keep hearing so much about? It occures to me that all the stories about ‘the real world’ have no bearing on our life now and we will have forgotten them by the time we need them. And the part of ‘the real world’ that I’ve met is NOT a friendly place. So why do schools prepare us for ‘the real world’ by PAMPERING us. ‘Caus as far as I can tell ‘the real world’ is not going to pamper us. -end of rant-
In the real world, America does not bring democracy to autocracies with force. In the real world, man did not spring out of mud just like that. In the real world, I am over 6 feet tall.
9-Free will?
29-Reality is awful, too.
“What the world needs is not more spite. What the world really needs is another simple, happy chorus song-we have found such a song. It is called, it is called…” Michael Flanders, intro to A Happy Song
What I meant was more that we are not necessarilly better off as a species for our intelegence, not that I myself would rather be ignorant. Muse is definitely the finest product which our inteligence has produced.
What’s so great about the real world anyway?
I would personally much rather live in an imaginary world.
8-read the whole thing before you answer. i said on earth, and i realized that humans arent better than all things on earth.
16-no, i mean zoinists. people whio like to zoin.
23-i wasnt saying that it was proof, i was saying that it was widely accepted, even by stupid people. also, i believe it was defined as genocide by the UN
14-ummmmmmm how, why?
17) ….So, when do you eat?
2) Both extremes are bad. In my social dance (they didn’t have a P.E. at the time I needed, just a boys’ P.E, and I WAS NOT going to take that….) I have a B- and I don’t even know why. *sobs* I have gotten A’s all my life! GAARRG for teachers who don’t tell you what you did wrong!
And all my assignments have an A. 0.o
26 (FS)- So I am forever fated to be lumped in with the people who elected Bush? In America, we, every single American… What?
Generalizations get people killed.
I would like to say that assumesions also get people killed.
My uncle got back from Iraq ( arab linguist) and I have lived in Japan. Steriotism gets people killed.
I also eat mostly Organic.
Schools are almost worthless: I learn more from the books I read and museblooging that most of my classes. . . However, my Dad, Grandfather, Great- Aunt, and Mom all have science degrees of some sort or another…… Hmmmmmmmmmmmmmm
36, 37: EXACTLY!!!!!!!!!!
ok-
14- Um, alright. In 6th grade on our schools morning news show they announced their was a new translation site that turned everything you typed into “snoop dog language” and, as an example they said Condoleeza Rice turns into Condoleeza Rizzizle. Yes, that passed for news in my school. Sad, really.
24- I understand completly. What do you have? ‘Cause my sister has PANDAS (pediatric autoimmune disease associated with strep) where she gets super sick if she gets strep.
OK my thing is popular people. Mean ones. Like this one time at school,I was having lunch with my friends. And one of my friends was wearing a shirt that had the Hogwarts emblem on it,because she loves Harry Potter. And this one girl, who is like the leader of the popular girls,(Is there a word for that? There should be.)comes up to her and says”My freinds are really annoying me. Can you teach me how to turn them into frogs?” I know this doesn’t sound that bad but she kept coming up again and again, going”Please can you?”GRRRRRRRRR!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! OK I’m gonna go have to vent at Mr.Joe for a little,so bye!
14-She owes too much to Bush for my comfort. She’s also a token, and that’s annoying.
17-That sounds hunger-inducing. Oh well, it’ll make OXFAM fast so much easier.
I understand your pain. My sis and mom are hypoglycemic.
“When the time comes, all individuals will change simultaneously.”-Kinji Imanishi
36-Heres a song for you:
we`re all repblicans now (duh duh)
we`re all repblicans now(duh duh)
even if you don`t like it
we`re all repblicans now(duh duh)
we`re all repblicans now (duh duh)
-a praire home conpanon
24- yes!!!!! we think alike and you would probably like what I do. I live on a small organic family farm. antibiotics are illegal, but with good care and management, I haven’y needed them for my 11 cows. I probably spend about a hour with them every day. I completely agree about factory farms, did you know that chickens live in cages of 1 foot x 1 foot stacked on top of each other in big buildings? and that most animal feed has antibiotics in it to feed to all animals their entire life, making them more prone to sicknesses with no cure? You’d also like to know that I raise and sell chickens to make money, but they are outside in a large pen with an open bottom that gets moved every day so they can eat grass and get sun and they eat organic feed and they are very happy. Lastly, to everyone, support small organic farms, they are a way of life for many people and animals and are the best way to produce food for everyone involved. Many small farms are being taken over by large factory farms because they can’t make enough money. I could go on about this forever, but I’ll save it for my argumentive essay for English about this topic. That’s going to be the best essay I’ve ever written (I hope my english teacher doesn’t mind if my five paragraphs are very long)
40- in all the really stupid teenagfe sycology books, that person is called the queen bee.
but those books are soooooooo stupid and generalize soooooooooooooooo much.
its actually really funnny,
so are parenting books. i used to read those wheni was bored. they should be called”how not to treat your kids.
th following is an aproximation from one of the books
Kid: david punched me on the bus it was so mena of him, i am so mad.
parent: gee, you sound mad
kid: you bet i am! i diddn’t mean to break his bird it was an accedint, i bumped into it
parent: mmm,
Kid: i really like dhis bird
paret; mmmm
etc.
anyway, the point of this was to show that you shoudl “say that you understand your child feelings” and if you don’t ask questions but make sypathetic sounding noises, your kids will say the whole story.
this is what would actually happen
Kid: david punched me on the bus it was so mena of him, i am so mad.
parent: gee, you sound mad
kid: No way! (if the kid is a teen, this is the point were they go up an dslam there door) i didn’t mean to break his bird it was an accedint, i bumped into it
parent: mmm,
Kid: your not really listening to me
paret; yes i am
kid: no your not. you just say “mmmmmmmm”
(kid goes into room and slamms door)
in short- parenting books are reeeeaaaly stupid.
end of rant
TMFA, you got 42nd post, jim lad! Yay for you!
Parenting books are dumb. Dumbety dumbety dumb. Total WOMBATs, if you ask me.
25-Dude. 60% of exported cattle meat comes from Brazil. Get your facts right. And what’s wrong with Chinese beef? Poultry has a high contamination rate, I can dig that, but hey-the beef’s fine. If not tasty.
I have no guilt about eating meat. None whatsoever.
I fishy HATE parenting books. Ya know, they really think we’re stupid.
The only good parenting book I read was, “Rules for Dating my Teenage Daughter”. It was really funny.
Now for a hot topic: Hezbollah. Did you realize that some people think that they have the right idea? Heaven help us. What part of “terrorist” do these people not understand?
45: look, maybe 60% of the meat YOU eat is imported from brazil, but I happen to live right in the middle of France, Germany, Italy and Austria, and trust me, swiss meat is 10 times better (more natural, healthier animals, richer taste) than say italian ones. And you go ahead and eat a chicken from china and risk death.
If you never eat anything but swiss meat, how do you know what Italian beef tastes like? You know, not to be rude or anything, we get your very nationalistic but get over yourself. Switzerland is not the greatest country in the world when you look at ALL aspects. Like, for example, not granting women’s suffrage till 1971? Whats with that little bit of unpleasent history? I’m sorry, it’s just that some people are growing bored with the switzerland is perfect and everywhere else sucks shpeil.
of course i never ate anything non swiss. Whenever i go abroad, i taste the difference. Really. And women (although they’ll never admit it) were happier when all they had to do was bake and pump out babies.
btw, I’m joking about that last bit.
i was reading this article in the bbc about how some European countries restrict wearing headscarves and stuff for muslims in public places. anybody have any opinions?
i think americans as a people consume much to much meat.
What does the B in WOMBAT stand for again? It seems that the more “intelligent” an organism is supposed to be, the dumber it is, if that makes sense to anyone.I mean, ants don’t go around flyig jets into each other’s hillls becuase of their political and religious differences. They don’t even have politics or religion. I can’t find the post but i agree with whoever said we need intelligence and ethics. or something like that.
Ooh! Wombat tests. I like them. I think WOMBAT stands for “Wizard’s Ordinary Magic and Basic Aptitude Test.”
Wombat:
Waste Of Money, Brains, And Time
49- not funny. at all.
50- thats just plain stupid. it fosters anti-non muslim feeling and could convince poeple to join terrorist groups. also, that is repression of religion.
50. That’s not stupid as much at it’s blatantly racist. No Western government would ever do such a thing to any Christian denimination.
47-japanese beef is best. and i’m completely non-biased, since i live in america, and come froom denmark. so i win.
24~ Try organic beef. They don’t put wormer and things like that into their cows. Try raising your own cow. My grandparents do, and we get meat from them. It tastes better than store-bought. If you raise your own chickens the organic way, and slaughter them yourself, they taste better than store-bought too…and they’re also better for you…
50~ What’s wrong with meat?? Nothing!!!!!!! Good protein! Good iron! Good things you need! God did say we could eat it…
I really hate the deal Wal-Mart has with Communist China…it sucks…
49–you almost gave me a heart attack. don’t do that again, I beg of you!
50–that is suppression of religion, it is racism, and it is just plain mean. If somone told me I had to stop wearing skirts b/c women wearing skirts is sexist, I would punch them in the mouth. What you wear should be your own choice, peeps. What you do in your private life should be your own choice, and no-one should be able to dictate these things to you.
well, it is true that if you’re wearing something that obscures your face and are involved in some sort of crime, it is much harder to identify you. but i still think it’s wrong.
and consuming so much meat is harmful to the environment.
I don’t think you have your figures straight…
*pies self*
Phoenix is back! *glomp*
62 (koko13)- What figures doesn’t she have straight? Eating the amount of meat we do is harmful to the environment. The land being used to grow grain for our cowburgers could just as easily be used to grow grain for us. Fewer people would go hungry. I don’t have the exact statistic with me, but I think you could feed something like fifty people for a day on the energy that goes into one Big Mac. (Correct me if I’m wrong.) So not only is eating commercialy-produced meat bad for the environment (and it is; it uses huge quantities of water), it’s bad for the whole world-hunger situation too.
I am a vegetarian, but I’m not against other people eating environmentally viable meat, such as wild game or fish. (Obviously, so long as they’re caught in sustainable numbers.) I just don’t do it for personal reasons, and because, frankly, I don’t like meat that much.
In kindergatten II stoped eating red meat so I am half vegitarian
58~ She means that we eat too much, not that it’s bad inherently.
8oz of meat is more then sufficient to fulfill our daily requirements for nutrition. But when it becomes culturally OK to eat huge amounts of bacon and sausage for breakfast, a hamburger sandwich for lunch, and then a 20oz steak for dinner, then I worry. Because while meat is a source of protein and iron, it also has a more than significant amount of saturated fat. We would also have to slaughter less animals to keep meat eaters happy, and so have less of a animal population problem, and no ‘need’ (of which there was none in the first place) for factory farming.
(By the way, I’m a veggie. I just don’t like meat, and don’t care for animal cruelty and intensive antibiotics. However, I totally support organic family farming)
let us talk about a very hot topic today, koatracks. there are very many koatracks aroung today, some are green, some are red, some are very stiff while others are bendable. some are made of wire and some of cheap plastic, but all are incredibly dim and inanimate
There is enough land in the world for each person to use 4 acres. The average American uses 25 acres.
I just want to throw that out there…
I am not a vegetarian, because (a) I have bad circulation and only red meat has enough iron to keep me from literally fainting every time I lose blood, and (b) I like meat. It isn’t my favorite food, but it’s okay. On average, though, I only eat 1 serving of red meat every 2 weeks.
I could not survive, however, without fish.
I think killing animals is not a terrible problem as long as they are killed humanely and killed for food, not sport. I CANNOT STAND hunting for sport. Call me crazy, but I hate it.
What kind of milk do people drink most? That may sound a little random, but it sort of goes along with the meat thing. I drink whole unpasturized and sometimes organic milk.
69- tell me about. When I went in for a check up in august, my doctor couldn’t even hear my pulse. They had to bring out the super sensitive sphygmomometer to get a reading that didn’t indicate I was already dead.
I cannot eat fish. I simply gag at the thought of eating anything that lived in water. No shellfish, seawead even. Yuck. Besides, there’s all that mercury contamination.
On the subject of meat, I consider myself very close to being a vegetarian. I only eat really dumb animals(cows+chickens, no offense to Bo, my favorite muse) and turkey on thanks giving. Lots of tofu, veggies, carbs. I guess I don’t really have much of an opinion on the subject, just maybe that we shouldn’t be using so many growth hormones. I still remember when my english teacher last year, Mr. O, who was super cool and directed the school play and did crossword puzzles with Ben, Evan, Chuy, Eliza, and I during lunch, (I know, I am such a geek) just had to tell us about the movie he had seen about meat processing plants. Thanks Mr. O, now we all have disturbing mental images that make us feel guilty everytime we eat meat. And believe me, he wasn’t a vegetarian, he just wanted to gross us out. Thats the kind of guy he was. Ok, random rambling reccolections recede rapidly…
70- UNPASTURIZED??? Do you know whats in unpasturized milk??? yucky. bacteria laden. possibly bochilism, though I don’t know if pasturization would get rid of that.
i eat meat, but not huge amounts. what i find slightly stupid, is people who think that meat-eating is morally wrong. like, my friend is a vegetarian, but he eats fish, “because they dont have much mental capacity”. see, moral arguments against meat-eating are a little iffy. unless it’s “dont pump them full of needless antibiodics, and give them more than 5 feet of living space, and give them decent food” stuff like that. but if you eat organic stuff, problem solved. like i do.
I don’t eat that much meat! Normally, I eat an organic pop-tart and a glass of milk for breakfast, a toasted cheese sandwich for lunch, and maybe a steak or a fish or hamburger for dinner.
I can see where the figures come from now. I forgot that the majority of America grabs a sausage biscuit from Hardee’s, two half-pound burgers at Mc-Donald’s, and a two pound steak somewhere else. I’d say one of the strongest businesses in America right now is McDonald’s.
Sad…nobody enjoys small-town hardware stores and things like that…Wal-Mart is basically monopolizing the “everything” industry…toys, gas, food, clothes, videogames, computers, high-tech stuff, and everything else including restaurants…bleh…
The major packing company Tyson is morally wrong. They merely slit the throats of chickens, hang them upside down, and then let them bleed to death…my family has home slaughtered a couple of times…chop off their heads, and all their brains think is *dead*…with Tyson, the chickens’ brains think ow, ow, i’m dying, ow, ow, i’m dying…sad…
50: You guys don’t understand bollocks. France has restricted wearing headscarves in public for muslim girls and guess what. It works. It’s forced socializing, makes the ignorant westerners feel more at ease with muslims and it has NOT been raising terrorist dangers. In fact even the muslims agree. I saw a docu about it. Think a situation through before shouting ‘racist!’
I love meat. Swiss meat is all organic, our cows have some of the best grass in the world (alpine grass- can’t beat that) and very clean and pure water. I adore meat. And I think it’s silly to be vegetarian because it’s a natural cycle, we were born to eat meat. We have specialized teeth for it and we have natural cravings for meat.
FrigidSymphony:
It might work. I have never been to a country that restrics the wearing of head scarves, so I wouldn’t know. My only experience is personal, or, rather, lack of it.
As I said, I wear long skirts or dresses and half-sleeves, and the neckline of my shirt is always above the collarbone. If someone told me that dressing like I do deters from racial harmony and I had to wear tank tops and jeans, I would, as stated before, punch them.
You might say that uncovering your face is different than wearing revealing clothing, and you would be right. Or you might think that tanks and jeans are not revealing–and you would also be right. Tanks and jeans are not revealing to you, but they are revealing to me. By the same logic, uncovering your face is not revealing to me, but it is revealing to some people. And forcing someone to go around dressed in a way they feel is immodest is simply not right.
In addition, the Muslim veil is derived from the Koran. Keeping them from wearing their veil is keeping them from practicing thier religion as they want to practice it. The Jewish Rabbis tell us that revealing clothes are not appropriate for women OR men, and making me wear clothing that my religion feels is innapropriate is also discripmination.
Even though the idea behind outlawing the veil is sound, the practice itself is prone to spread discontent. Personal freedom is just as important as political freedom, or any other kind you could think of.
Sorry about the rant, mates!
By the by, FrigidSymphony, you are right in #77. If we want to eat meat, it is our priveledge. Even so, we have no right to torture animals or kill them needlessly–so slaughter humanely!
78: true, but if they feel that a made up rule is more important than a better life in France, than they can bloody well stay wherever they lived before. Not to be racist or anything, but I’m kinda freaked out by the ever-growing number of muslims in my country. Nothing against muslims, but I’d rather not see Switzerland become a mostly muslim country. It’s just this private feeling of mine..
79- Who says that the french muslims have any less right to be there and practice their religion without others pushing rules at them that go against their religious beliefs than any other religion? I completly agree with 54-55. You basically accused the french muslims of basically not belonging in france. Well guess what, the normal cristian french people aren’t native to france either. I don’t know about switzerland, but in America we believe in religious freedom. I don’t think wearing a veil is bothering anyone, and if it bothers you then you’re a racist. Plain and simple, no exceptions. If you take away religious freedom you are just asking for people to start disliking you. Being muslim does not mean you’re a terrorist, but just wait till those terrorist groups start targeting france on the basis that they are anti-muslim. And what “ignorant westerners” are you talking about that can’t feel comforatable if people are wearing headscarves? And no, not all muslims agree. There have been over 100 girls expelled from public french schools for wearing veils since this law was passed. 30-40% of french people don’t agree with the law, and it is worthwhile to note that this law mainly affects muslims and jews(it outlaws wearing kippas) while hardling affecting cristians(it only says they cannot wear large crosses) while much of france accomadates christians in many was, such as vacations and public holidays for Christian holidays, fish in school lunches on Friday, payment by the government of salaries of teachers working in Catholic schools, etc. People should have the right to chose weather to wear veils. A much more appropriate response would be to kindly ask people to remove religious symbols when going into a public place such as a school, etc. but should not be a harshly enforced law.
75- enter shechting (killing an animal according to jewish law). while i can not attest to the amount of freedom an animal on a a kosher farm has (it prob. varies greatly), i can attest that the animal was dead before it knew it was dying.
80- thank you.
79- firstly- brittish curses are still curses. don’t do it. secondly, muslims wearing scarves might be very happy with their arrangmet, and do not feel it detracts from their quality of life. Also, the only possable problem with a country that is largely one religion is if it turned into a theocrasy. in america, even if it is largely christian, it permits me to practice my religion my way.
70-geep!
unpasturized? whole?
i drink organic 2% stuff.
80-yeah.
#70: I’ve been drinking half percent my whole life…but I’m slowly becoming vegan, so I’m drinking quite a bit of soymilk now also.
2- Bleah, I know. There are seniors in my school who are in basic Algebra I classes who need to use times-tables for tests. No joke. And they aren’t special-ed.
7- THIRD. Most intelligent [kudos to kiki, comment 12] Other than that, I shan’t go on about this….I think that was covered in a later post…*sigh*
11- Wow, I didn’t know you were Swiss….wait, you are, right? xD
24- Wow. And thank you for considering fish to be meat. It’s really annoying when people don’t. And when they don’t believe you when you tell them that gelatin does come from animal bones….I ate seafood, like, five times ever. It’s gross. How can you stand it?
33- to zoin? Please explain.
40- Please don’t call them that. Popularity implies widespread like/respect/whatever. No one likes people like that. Everyone else is just too nice to break their stupid fantasies. They’ll leave it to this “real world.” Oh, and I call them “Borg Queens.” Don’t be assimilated, folks.
[warning: stereotypical] In addition to that, it’s rather annoying when people lump the people in the group classified as “preppy” with the “barbies,” or “Paris Hiltons,” you know? Preppy implies polos and tennis and rich parents. Barbie/Paris implies, well, Paris. Trying to keep this a childrens’ blog and all But I have a really good friend who would be preppy, but not the Paris sort. People think it’s weird when we hang around together. I’m an antisocial nerd who wears dark colours, and she looks like she jumped off of a very pink Express/The Limited add. In every school I’ve been to, there have never been clearly defined cliques. It’s just a myth spread by the notorious “chick-lit and chick-flicks.”
43- You remind me of my sister’s one friend so much it’s scary. Her name is Elizabeth, too. @_@
44- Indeed. Almost as bad as Gallant and that other guy from Highlights.
46- I think my sister is banned from dating. Funny, really, because she’s the socalite.
49- There would be a big angry flame here if you hadn’t stated that you were joking about the last bit.
57- I could never eat a cow I raised. Actually, I dont’ eat cows. Or anything that involved the demise of an animal. But still…
I get freaked out everytime I’m driving and see a squirrel. A cat crossed the road today. I nearly had a heart attack.
60- That’s weird. I have no problems with skirts, And I’m practically a feministic extremist (sp?). Once I saw a man wearing a kilt when I was at the ****** amusement park. He was my hero. Many froods wear kilts at Ren. Faires.
64- *applause* The only meat I used to eat willingly was poultry. Just a ramble. To this day, my father still asks me if I want to eat -insert meat here- at EVERY meal. It’s bloody annoying.
67- ….okay, then….
69- Hunting for sport….you know, Elmer Fudd is a vegetarian. He said so in an episode where Bugs and Daffy were reading duck and rabbit recipies, respectively.
70- CHOKLIT!
71- And seafood just smells horrible. It’s completely unappetizing.
77- We also have appendices. We don’t use them.
There’s a lot of stuff I don’t do know, just because I’ve thought about it too much. I am seriously going to become a schitzophrenic hermit by the time I’m 40. If we haven’t blown up the earth by then. Anyway, meat-eating is one of them. It’s just weird to think about…..I can’t really explain it. Other veggies will probably get what I’m saying, though….I hope.
Nothing more to say. Now, anyway. This post was über-long.
77: I love that swiss meat is humane. But I don’t live in switzerland. Therefore, most of the meat that would come my way would not be humane. So, I don’t eat it.
You say that people have natural cravings for meat. Yes, some people do, and yes, Humans have historically evolved to be omnivores, but frankly, the sight of a steak disgusts me. I don’t crave meat at all. Also, the amount of energy that goes into meat is huge, which enlarges one’s environmental footprint. I’m not saying that eating meat is inherently bad, just that people should eat less of it, because, as the popluation grows, there will be less room on earth for people to have large, luxurious footprints, with huge houses, lots of lights, etc, and so people will have to consume less or else there will be starvation and the food and water wars that are predicted to break out in arid places such as the southwestern US in the future if current trends continue. So about 8oz a day, both for the environment, one’s health, and the animal, is reccomended.
85- Rock on!
Has anyone here read “Harrison Bergeron” by Kurt Vonnegut? I’d like to discuss that…
Sorry, Peradventurer. Never read it.
I don’t like when people have huge houses and no children. It seems like a waste to me.
Statistics and polls show that muslims in france feel much more integrated with french society than muslims anywhere else. This is partly because of the dress restrictions, but also because france tries to provoke a certain nationalism, it tries to make feeling french a very good and positive thing. I’m a very nationalistic swiss (in case anyone hadn’t noticed) and I love my country.
I didn’t say that muslims have less of a right to be in France than in other places, but if someone doesn’t like where they live, then they should move (assuming of course they’re legally able to do so)
FrigidSymphony:
It may be that the Muslims feel integrated–but you can’t force someone to feel integrated. Therefore, there should be no law.
In addition, all I know about France as a country is that it tries to evoke nationalism at the expense of personal trademark. Also, I have a friend, Talia, who is pure-blooded French (her parents speak it in the house, even) and her family takes in Jewish French students who would like to be able to walk in public without getting kidnapped. It seems that nationalism is triggering bad feelings towards those who don’t really “fit”. And you can’t force someone to fit in.
82- people had been drinkinng unpasteurized milk for thousands of years before pasteurization ws invented
84- I’m in New york, where does your sister’s friend live? also, I can’t eat the steer I raised either, he’s so sweet and gentle. I’ve had him since he was 3 months old, I celebrate his birthday(April 28th) and half birthday (I know, I’m wierd) and he lets me put an old horse saddle on him and ride him and he comes when I call him. Luckily I buy his feed and hay and take full care of him so my family can’t kill him.
86-I think my friend did (not that that helps)
Elizabeth: You have a steer? That is so awesome! I could never eat an animal I raised, either.
90- In the middle of nowhere, PA. Weird. I really want a pet chicken, but my father said he’d eat it. But that’s so awesome that you have a steer. What is his name?
86 (TFP)- Dude, I wrote a paper on it. It is a satire of the AMerican educational system, if you couldn’t tell. See post 2.
84- there were a lot of people wearing kilts at my homecoming. of course our school mascot is the scot so that sort of explains it. Also, I’m an antisocial nerd who wears lots of bold colors as well as dark colors. it’s fun.
91+92- My steer’s name is Clovis, he is 1 year, 5 months and 14 days old today. Dude, his 1 and 1/2 birthday is in 14 days! anyway, he is a mostly black Holstien with a white triangle on his head, I could go on and on, not that anyone but me cares though, so I’ll shut-up now.
89- the most common way for a country to evoke nationalism is to give the people a common enemy. This almost always leads to bloodshed.
Elizabeth: Oh, he sounds so sweet! Congrats on his one and one-half birthday, and give him an apple from me!
Zyviva: Tell me about it.
96- Always worked before. Great way to control overpopulation, isn’t it?
94- There was one guy wearing a kilt at my homecoming. But our school has no scottish affiliations, so I think he was just trying to be funny. I laughed. Of course, I usually laugh at things nobody else finds funny, and don’t laugh at things they do. Oh well.
88-muslims who wear headscarves(religios extremests) care about their religion. a lot. religious freedom is good. what if we wernt allowed to be atheists? that would not be good. just because a law is on your side does not mean that you should agree with it. think about what you are saying. can he average person, simply “move” to a different country? obviously not. there are huge complications (jobs money etc.) a good country should be good for everyone. you said that if one does not like a country, one should move. religious extremists will not like that law, so they will move. so basically, you are saying that no more muslims can live in our country. think about nazi germany. no shops for jews. no rights for jews. what was the idea of that? to get rid of jews, to make them leave. note the similarities. also, by being nationalistic, one is shunning other cultures. this is not good.
84-umm sure, kilts are nice, but…. not really. i would wear one to make a point, but they dont look too hot, ya know? ( i am of the male gender)
For the human “supremacy” discussion: I’m almost done reading The Sight and I am SERIOUSLY thinking humans are at a certain disadvantage in somethings…well perhaps now the animals have less of a habitat it’s different, but really…I don’t think any one thing is ever better than the next.
(77)Sadly, it seems to me that your country has a much more humane way of completing that cycle, because America’s livestock doesn’t really constitute as anything alive, if you ask me. Unnaturaly fattened cattle and fowl that have nary seen the light of day. It’s depressing to me.
(85) This makes sense. Since you no longer need to consume meat to survive, you are not in any way attracted to it. It’s logical.
No one in a kilt at our homecoming. About the most interesting one was my friend, who decided to go punk. We all danced horribly, and tried to spam the DJs into playing Bohemian Rhapsody. Go us.
99 (dlod)- It’s not just extremists who wear headscarves. I have a Muslim friend, who is in no way a religious extremist, who wears a headscarf to school. It’s a statement of faith, similar to wearing a necklace with a cross for Christians. It’s not only fundamentalists who wear those, after all.
So, what does everyone think of gender issues? (Including but not limited to transvestitism, transsexualism, feminism, masculinism, etc etc etc.)
I think that people need to realize that saying guys are stupid and girls are smart, or any rot like that, is not feminism but sexism. Men are not inherently better than women, and women are not inherently better than men. Sure, males tend to be better at math and stuff like that, but what people don’t realize is that that is an average, not a rule. Take Zyviva, for instance. She is the best math student I have ever encountered. What are you doing now, Zyv, calculus? If you take 100 guys and 100 girls, and choose 10 random people from each gender grouping, the 10 guys are more likely to have a better math average. But with individual people, there is no average–how good you are at math is dictated by intelligence, hard work, conceptual grasping, etc.
But back to amazonian feminists. Did you-all know that some people think women should be prohibited from raising children, and men should be prohibited from getting jobs, just to “even the score”? I’m not kidding, one of these people was interviewed in a major newspaper. These people are just as sexist as thier forebears, maybe even more so. What does everyone have against the concept of equality? It’s not that hard to picture.
101-one thing amy not be better then the next, but one thing can be more harmful then the next.
102- people are people. all people should have the same rights regardless. if a woman wants to be saty at home mother and her partner has a big enough salary for this to work- good for them. if some one wants to be a stay-at home father and their partner makes a big enough salary for this to work- good for them, if they both want to work- good for them. discrimination in the workplace based on gender is stupid.if some one is gay/lesbian, its their business. leave them alone. if they want to marry, just give them a marrage liscence and let them get on with their lives. let them adopt, reconize them as a famil, etc.
ihn short- people are people are peple and all deseve the same rights and privilages, regardless of pretty much anything.
end of rant.
103- thats insanely idiotic. and about the averages-is it because they are that way or is it that they are fulflling expectations. most people (esp. teens) try to fit io the role they think they should play. unfortunatyl, for girls this tends to mean breing more feeling, and *shudder* liking shopping. and for boys this tends to include things like being more thinking, loveing sports and generally being mocho.
i was actually trtalking to a boy at my schol and i mentioned how i had female friends (phoenixincluded0 who like d martial arts. he told me it was freaky. this is just because girls are stil lthought of as weaker and less agressive. ha.
Who said that? I promise, if it was Yotam I am going to come through this computer and strangle him…actually, even if it wasn’t Yotam. Let’s get Jenny and Cheli and beat him up together! We’ll show him how well girls can fight… *grumble*
But you do realize, of course, that girls ARE weaker than boys? I’m not sexist, mate, but I know it well. The only reason I can outrun boys at all is because I practiced for a loooong time. Finesse takes the place of brute strength (female martial artists show that) but in a brute strength contest you can expect the male to win. Unless it’s against me I didn’t learn pressure points for nothing!
But yes. Boys, on average, have better math skills. But if you pick one boy and one girl at random the boy has NO statistical advantages. Individuals are not averages. You are living, breathing proof of that, Zyv.
95- Sweet x 1000
100- I think they look cool. If I were a guy, I’d wear them. xD And have Jafar-style goatee. But I’m just weird like that.
I didn’t go to my homecoming.
101- I read that book! w00t!
102- Bleah. [Rant Ahead]
Males do have more grey matter in their brains, though. And females have more white matter. Which explains some things, but the difference is very small.
Any sort of sexism is really annoying. Some kid in my chem class tried to get my teacher to say that males are generally thought of as scientists. The conversation went something like this:
Kid: But, seriously, do you think of guys or girls as scientists?
Teacher: …
Kid: Okay, what do you think of when you hear the word, “scientist?”
Teacher: ME!
‘T was great. That class has a 2:1 male:female ratio…
What really annoys me to no end is that inane idea that every woman’s dream is to get married, have kids, and become the typical stay-at-home mother. I’m sure you’ve met people who advocate that. I hate it. Like, I’m looking into colleges, and old people [like older gen. of my family + their friends] are always all “What do you want to do, though, when you’re married?” and sometimes add “and have kids” to the end. Seriously, is that important right now? I’m 16! Children are gross!
Babies, mainly.
I have to go to my cousin’s baptism next month…..around the 17th, I think. It is going to be boring. And my family will get mad for not wanting to touch the kid. Eew, drool + burping + sticking digits in mough +… = UNSANITARY. I refuse.
And at the moment, I have two minutes left of lunchtimeee. And then a Spanish test.
Anyway, I suppose my point is that this is not Stepford. Women and men, on average, have the potential equally skilled at any given task. You can go into stereotypes and certain example groups, but, empirically [sp?], it’s not a huge deal.
AHH! BELL!
some people really do want that and that is their choice. but for those that don’t….
and babies are not that unsanitary. you don’t see their family dying of plauge.
i remember listening to my aunt talk about how som guys are afraid of babies and how much frun it is to go up to them and ask if the want to hold your newbown.
106- it wasn’t yotam. he knows you. he would never say anything like that- hes not stupid.
76. I believe that the French goverrnment’s policy has made ignorant westerners more at ease with Muslims, but it shouldn’t. Ignorant westerners should be at ease with Muslims even when they are wearing their head scarves. The French government is dealing with the effect of the problem rather than the cause.
not necessarily. the choice remains with the muslim on whether he wants to leave or stay.
103. That is not true. Girls and guys have the same inherint mathematical ability. Research shows that if one takes away the expectations people have about gender and mathematics, girls do just as well as guys.
On a note ralated to the whole French Muslims thing, does anyone have any comments on the immigration debate in the US?
I think that Mexicans should have the right to come to the United States legally in search of a better life. People who live here already have no basic right to live here that Mexicans don’t.
Of course, the world has a bigger problem than imigration when people would rather come to a foreign country and become exploited migrant laborers than stay put.
110. Should anyone be forced to make a choice between their religious beliefs and their home? Do you suggest that they return to their roots in the Middle East despite the unstable political situation there, or emigrate to another Western country which has the same prejudices, even if they don’t have a policy like that of France?
the only differences between girls and guys are physical or psychological.
and on the american immigration situation: Sod it. America is so big it doesn’t really matter. Go found some more cities, you’ve got a whole stretch in the middle of the continent with virtually nothing on it.
113: If they emigrate to another western country that maybe has france’s prejudices but NO ban on clothing and such, then yes, by all means do so. But it just so happens that muslims feel much more integrated in france.
108- But I’m a crazy germaphobe. I blow stuff like that out of proportion. Like hugging. Eew.
112- Bleah, we should tighten borders, offer citizenship to the illegals, and screen them when they apply. For diseases and terrorist links. Or we could just mesh with Canada and Mexico and make a supercountry. But that’s not happening. I typed something about that which was much longer on one of the old HT threads, but I don’t want to go looking for it…
Is FF here? She’s Muslim, right? I wonder what she thinks about this….*calling FF*
I have a Muslim friend. She got me a shawl when she went to Pakistan to visit family. I can so totally pull it off….I hope…. I’ve never seen her wear a headscarf, though…
114-so your solution to the immagrent problem is to turn Americ into one huge mga-city with no open space or farms?
personally i think all cities should be extended underground. then the entire surface could be razed and devoted to nature reserves and farms. But that isn’t going to happen. humans need sun to much.
116: oh yes, like terrorists are coming out of canada and mexico now, are they? What, the evil hockey-stick wielding canadian of doom? The giant kamikaze taco? Borders should be tightened the other way. To stop americans from getting into canada (the only murder in Toronto in like 10 years was a guy from detroit) and into mexico (to all the underage prostitutes and drugs).
Actually, I find it really interesting that new studies show that girls and boys brains actually have developemental differences, naturally, not because of any outside influence. These differences, however, do not effect whether one is better at any one subject. The only thing I can say is that, being a girl in both honors a2a and honors english, there are fewer girls in my math class and fewer boys in my english class. However, the girls do just as well or better in math than the boys and vice versa with english. But what is really amazing is the gender turnover in colleges. It used to be that there was a large male-to-female ration in many colleges, now there are many more girls attending colleges. Therefore the requirements to get in selective colleges are much higher for girls than boys, so a girl maybe turned down even if a boy with the same transcript would have gotten in. I think this is just so ridiculus. Trying to close the gender gap is no excuse, people should be excepted based on merit rather than gender. Also, as a girl who wants to pursue a career in the sciences, I can safely say that boys are no better than girls in this area, it’s just a male dominated field is very intimidating to many women. But a lot of women in the sciences movements are making huge progress.
115- Have you ever actually talked to a French Muslim? Whatever, I think we’ve moved on.
Sorry for super long post.
119-the reason more male scientists have made discoveries is that thyey have been promited to and encouraged to for a muuch longer time
119: polls, dear. From the Guardian Weekly.
I can say that that are actually an equal amount of males and females in most careers, except for engineering. but what really bugs me is the fact that men are still getting paid more than women are. because if you are a woman and you are a secretary, you get paid less than a book keeper which is what they call a man with the same job. (sorry for the feminist rant)
112- we should let as many Mexicans that need to in. They aren’t going to take jobs away from Americans because they do jobs Americans don’t want to do, like pick apples and cabbage and tie grapes and hoe cabbage… all sorts of stuff. They deserve a decent life as much as anyone and currently they are helping the economy because they pay into social security and taxes but don’t ever recieve the benefits. I agree we should let them in legally, though, it’s not much harder that way and it would be better for our homeland security if we knew who was in our country.
Polls aren’t allways reliable. When asked to rate their happiness on a scale from 1-10, Lottery winners had an average of 7, Paraplegics 6. Not to say that lottery winners can’t be miserable of parplegics can’t be happy, but you expect a bigger difference.
My Honours Spanish 3 class is mostly female. Five males and eleven females, to be exact.
My AP Calc class is about even…*counts* 6 females and twelve males….okay, I was wrong, but the girls participate in class more, so it seems like there are more of us…
AP Chem is an even 2:1 male:female ratio, I’m pretty sure….or maybe there are fewer males than I thought…hmm…I’ll count on Monday.
Honours Gov’t is probably even or has more females. I’m guessing about even.
102- true.
103- people think this?
105- true, but i believe that there is research showing that that males are inherantly better at math and science, and females are better at liberal arts. also, what about the ice cream thing? (chunky vs smooth.) there was research to prove that.
106-yeah. that too
107- males (anatomically) have more upper boy strenghth. (i think)
113-eeexactly!
118- that was very stereotypical. most people arnt terrorists.
120-yep
121-and polls are sooooo reliable. somehow, i dont think they asked the people who allready left, or got expelled based on their wearing headscarves.
(104) How so? If you’re referring to the destructive ability of humans, I agree. What makes us more dangerous is our free well, and the temptation and weakness that comes with it.
(118) Hahaha you kill me FS. -is actually laughing- That was phrased so wonderfully…ahh.
Honestly, I think it’s… morbidly amusing how we are continually taking measures of saftely only as worse and worse things happen, thus not taking and real “precautions” but more like “postcautions” if you will. At some point we should all just stick our heads in th sand collectively and hope for the best. [/sarcastic reference to the only episode of South Park I’ve ever seen]
What do you all think freedom is? I’d like to know.
126: I was being cuttingly ironic. My point was that terrorists do NOT come out of mexico and canada.
and ‘not everyone is a terrorist’??? I should certainly hope so.
122- I’m probably going to go into engineering. Chemical engineering. I can even take an engineering class next year in school! w00t!
127- *sings* Freedom, ooooh, freedom…..well that’s just some people talking. Your prison is walking through this world all alone…
I found my immigration post:
About illegal immigration, I’m pretty much ambivalent about it. On one side, the law is the law [whoooo…..identity statement] and if our government is to retain any sort of authority, the law must be enforced. However, there are so many illegal immigrants living and working in our country that it would simply be illogical to deport them all. Not to mention the expense. So, in my opinion, simply strengthening border security would make the most sense. And, of course, speeding up the immigration process. I heard, from the family members of illegal immigrants at my school, that the wait to get into the country can be manymany years. That is just absurd. Bloody bureaucracy. Some immigrants may not even be aware of some of the laws pertaining to immigration. Yes, I do think they should learn about it, but I’m guessing that some people third-world countries do not have the resources to do so. So they might spend most of their life-savings on hiring a coyote or on getting fake papers. Many people taken over by coyotes die on their way or in the desert. If fake papers are spotted as being fake, the person gets sent back to the position from which they started. Or worse. Nevertheless, granting amnesty, though it is the easiest way to resolve at least part of the situation, could be considered a “slap-in-the-face” to those who bothered to immigrate legally. But registering them as citizens would relieve some of their fear of being caught, deported, possibly sent into a hostile area, and seperated from family. I’m not talking about drug gangs here, though… And the English-Only part of the Illegal Immigration Act [I’m sure everyone has heard about it by now] is just weird. After all, [to point out the blatantly obvious] it takes time to learn the language. I do believe that companies should be punished for knowingly hiring illegals, especially if they pay them something that is below minimum wage. But, overall, I’m “on the fence” about this issue.
[Post number 35, here.]
116. I love it! We could unify North America into a borderless conglomeration, then give no power to the government of said conglomeration. Cities could have autonomy. I personally support local government of everything over powerful federal governments. A country like the United States is so large an varied that the government can’t possibly do the right thing for every single area. Individuals can be better represented in small local governments. Hmm, I started this paragraph endorsing your idea and then came up with something 180 degrees from it. Sory.
I also like the underground cities idea. Do you want to hear my crazy theory about the future? You don’t have a choice. We will live underground with periscopes bringing in light, or in floating cities. Giant glass domes will regulate the climate of all arable land. We will have to save energy very carefully. Instead of elevators, we will have fancy pully systems. The car will become obsolete, or at the very least, a very expensive luxury. People will transport themselves with bicycles.
(130, first paragraph)
What would you call that sort of arrangement? A conglomeracy?
131: A megalopolis? City-states?
Yeah. The Amalgamated Conglomeracy of America.
116: I’m sorry, but I feel I have to point something out. Confusing terrorists with immigrants is just republican bull designed to scare the public into voting for them. Just like shows like Cops, most news channels, all the scary episodes like the killer bees that were supposed to migrate from africa to texas in 2000, the internet failing that was going to plunge the world into disorder… all bollocks. Go read the Guardian.
134- there are africanized honey bees, commonly called killer bees, that have been introduced to some parts of north america and have killed at least 14 people here. Even so, they’re not as big a deal as they were made out to be, true.
The whole y2k computer crash rumor was started because some type of computer or software or something didn’t have a counter that went past 1999 so it supposedly wouldn’t work after that, but they fixed it so it would and wasn’t as big a deal as anyone thought it would be. And this time, I actually agree with you on the terrorist-immigration thing, FS.
135: point is, the media does the best it can into scaring the public senseless. I mean, the sounds, the voices, the headlines… It’s outrageous.
Oh, interesting sidenote, there’s a movie called Death of a President, which is like a fake documentary on the assassination of president bush (I think). It looks absolutely real, and the point is to show people what can be done by superimposing.
128-i know. but some could/do. my point is, not all terrorists are from middle eastern countries.
130-yeah! that was my idea! solve immigration and economic inequality by having three counries. Europe/ Africa, North America, and asia/ aussieland.
it works! flawlessly! only problem is, never in a million yrs would any1 agree to it.
what happened to south america and antarctica?
137: Not to sound like a bigot, but I started thinking… and I realized that the only terrorists I knew of were middle-eastern terrorists. Now, my brain probably isn’t functioning at top speed, but could you please tell me where terrorists also come from??
The United States government believes that ecoterorism is the greatest internal terror threat currently. It is completely delusional, or quite forgetful. A much bigger threat is racially motivated terrorism.
Actually, there are a lot of places with local terrorists, we just don’t hear about them much because they don’t affect us. For example, ETA is an orginazation of Basque (region of Spain) seperatists who use terrorism.
139 – Understandable. The Middle East is filled with conflict right now.
And on the immigration debate: I fully support the rights of Mexicans to come to America and I even support offering them citizenship, as long as they do it legally. Say what you like, illegal immigration is still illegal.
Zallie!!! Get on NationStates/Gaia!! We’re roping in ppl for a Chicago meet-up on the weekend! Yay!
138- who lives or cares about antartica? and south america is included in Noth america. thought that was implied.
139-thats because you think of a terrorist of being someone who blows themselves up in buildings, to make points about westerner and israili-hating.
think again
141-yes, but that doesnt take away the illegal citezens roghts as humans.
the bible inciting to kill belongs here, as it will undoubtably piss you all off. So here are the quotes:
In Exodus 31:15 the Holy Bible demands: “For six days, work is to be done, but the seventh day is a Sabbath of rest, holy to the LORD. Whoever does any work on the Sabbath day must be put to death.â€
Exodus 35:2: “For six days, work is to be done, but the seventh day shall be your holy day, a Sabbath of rest to the LORD. Whoever does any work on it must be put to death.â€
In 1 Timothy 2:11-12 the Bible says: “Let a woman learn in silence with all submissiveness. I permit no woman to teach or to have authority over men; she is to keep silent.†See also statements like 1 Cor 14:34-35 and Numbers 31:14-18.
“Your male and female slaves are to come from the nations around you; from them you may buy slaves. You may also buy some of the temporary residents living among you and members of their clans born in your country, and they will become your property. You can will them to your children as inherited property and can make them slaves for life.†In Exodus 21:20 the Bible says: “If a man beats his male or female slave with a rod and the slave dies as a direct result, he must be punished, but he is not to be punished if the slave gets up after a day or two, since the slave is his property.â€
In Leviticus 20:13 the Holy Bible commands: “If a man lies with a man as one lies with a woman, both of them have done what is detestable. They must be put to death.â€
In Leviticus 24:16 the Bible demands: “Anyone who blasphemes the name of the LORD must be put to death. The entire assembly must stone him.â€
(139 Frigid Symphony) Well, for starters, there’s Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam, in Sri Lanka. I don’t know if they are still active. I believe a cease fire was signed in 2002, but…
“Terrorist” just applies to anyone who uses fear to fight for their cause. My Global Studies techer said yesterday that, to the British during the American Revolution, George Washington could be considered a terrorist. After all, he did attack in winter, which was a big no-no.
107-Teacher: Queenie, what’s the first name you think of when you hear the word ‘scientist’?
Me: Dad!
Teacher: I mean famous scientists.
Me: Dad! Grandpa, Uncle Nassime…family members…Darwin, Mendeleyev, Heyerdahl…forty minutes later
Teacher: Okay, you can stop now.
Me: Oh. All right.
Teacher: Jack? Name?
Jack: Queenie’s dad!
139-Spain, France, Algeria (which is pretty bloody random), Sri Lanka, Russia, some in Quebec who are extremist and not sanctified so please don’t shoot me for saying that and yes I know what I’m talking about, and even the US. Yes, the US. Eat that, Bushies.
I’ve never been on a hot topics thread. Lets give it a try.
I love Antarctica! Here’s the song about it that I wrote for our 5th grade play:
(sung to a familiar tune by Steven Foster)
Welcome to Antarctica, welcome, welcome
Welcome to Antarctica, Ant-arc-ti-ca
You’re gonna see the highest
continent
You’re gonna see Antarctica, the windiest of them all.
You’re gonna see the dryest
continent
You’re gonna see Antarctica, the coldest of them all.
Welcome to Antarctica, welcome, welcome
Welcome to Antarctica, Ant-arc-ti-ca
Yeah!
Cheesy, but close to my heart.
Antarctica needs to recruit people to live there. The Inuits should adjust to the ways of the Antarctic, and tell all of the other people that are there to get out or pay them a fine of 24 Antarctic caribou a year. The only problem is, no one wants to do that.
How important is Antarctica? Almost as important as any other continent. Some view it as more important, some view it as much less, some view it as about the same. BUT ANTARCTICA IS IMPORTANT, AND I LIVE AND CARE ABOUT ANTARCTICA!
144- your numbers quote is what is called “uoting out of context”. the women refered to where a specific group who had mass-seduced the israelites to incite them to idol worship.
aslo, slaves where a part of life during that time period. find me a single group that did not keep slaves but could have (ie- where not slaves them selves or something similar) and in judaism, slaves had rights and where released every fifty years (the yovel [jubilee, i think] year)
and 1) no death penality is applied nowadays, for ,many many many many reasons. 2) even when the Torah (old testament) was the law of the land of israel, if the court put even seven (i think the number’s right. phoenix, tell me if i’m wrong) people to death, it was considered a murdering court.
147- why destroy the one continent humans have not yet thourouly contaminated/
Ok, weird. Just after posting 145 I went to ear brekkie and read the newspaper and guess what’s the caption in the front picture? “A Truck packed with explosives rammed a military convoy, killing 94 people, mostly sailors. The attack was one of the deadliest since a 2002 cease- fire between the government and seperatist Tamli rebels”
So there’s one example of non-Arab terrorism.
148-so say the women mass seduced israelites.
that quotation does not say those women in particular. it just says women.
and as far as i can tell, you have no problem with the other ones.
i remember, i was in a hotel room. i had nothing to read. so, i picked up the complimentary bible. first thing i saw was “the wife shall get up before dawn, and make food for her family”, or something along those lines. i was horrified, and like, ok ill stop reading now.
just a thing that i noticed, im in model un. this is a quote from the universal declaration of human rights, byt the un.
Article 21.
(1) Everyone has the right to take part in the government of his country, directly or through freely chosen representatives.
(2) Everyone has the right of equal access to public service in his country.
(3) The will of the people shall be the basis of the authority of government; this will shall be expressed in periodic and genuine elections which shall be by universal and equal suffrage and shall be held by secret vote or by equivalent free voting procedures.
this happens again in articles 18, 17, 15 , 13,11,10, 8, 22, 25, and 29.
lots of rights, but appearantly only men have most of them.
gender specific pronouns, when no gender was specified.
not cool.
146-wait… do people call you “queenie” if so, cool!
awesome!
sometimes we can’t take the bible literally (like killing people for certain offences and saying women are inferior and owning slaves, etc.) we have to apply it to modern life.
151- so, are you impling that before modern life, women were inferior? and that owning slaves was ok?
god supposedly wrote the bible through people, so why would he change his opinions in bout 2000 yrs, just based on what has become socially acceptable in the last 50 yrs?
150- the actual quotation may not specifiy, but taken in context, that is clearly what it is refering to. and i didn’t argue the other woman related quote because i don’t believe in the christian bible and as such can not speak for its views.
and slavery was a way of life 3000 yrs ago when the Torah was written. At that time, saying do not keep slaves was the smae as saying take an oath of poverty.
And English should have words for the following words- s/he, him/her, sir/ma’am and his/hers.
i shall invent them now. if someone doesn’t like them ,feel free to suggest other alternatives.
s/he- kep
him/her- koze
his/hers-koze’s
sir/ma’am- xoj
I know this is going waaayyyyy back, but…
FrigidSymphony-My parents thought about moving my family to Switzerland, cuz it’s such a great place to live.
emmatheduck-Are you homeschooled?
There’s no way I’m reading all this, so i’ll just lurk on this thread for now.
I don’t know about you, but I often find myself using they and forms of it for he/she etc. My English teacher doesn’t approve, but I think that in a living language one has to accept new conventions.
For this discussion, please in all future arguments refer to the New Testament as the Bible and the Old Testament as the Torah. I cannot testify for the Bible, but as to the Torah:
Many, many people have challenged that the Torah is sexist because (a) polygamy is theoretically allowed, (b) a soldier is allowed to take an enemy woman captive as a concubine. (If there are any other questions, I will take them).
Now, for (a): Polygamy was allowed in the times of the Torah because in those times there were roughly two or three times as many Jewish women as there were men (because men more commonly went out to war. Women fought, but much less often. Only three women were soldiers that I can think of offhand: Debrah, Jael, and Judith.) However, the numbers of males and females have evened out and the Jewish Court has outlawed polygamy for this reason.
For (b): The captive woman thing is not permission; rather rules protecting the captive. God never demands anything of us that we are incapable of doing; a soldier crazed with lust from battle WILL rape a woman. You can’t stop him. This happens in the American army, the Canadian army, the Swiss army, everywhere. I am willing to bet that every army has several documented rape cases. Therefore, these laws are to protect the captured woman, saying that the soldier may not have sex with her until a month after capture, during which she shall let her nails grow, shave her head, and mourn for her lost parents. The period of mourning lets the soldier’s lust settle down, while the woman makes herself ugly to keep him from desiring her. If you still want her, you MUST marry her, whereupon she becomes a full wife with wife’s rights. If you don’t want her, you can’t sell her as a slave. Instead, you set her free and give her money to survive until she finds a job, and take her to wherever she wants to go.
Slavery:
There are several misunderstandings about Jewish slavery. The first is that you are allowed to enslave people from other nations, the second is you can sell your daughter, and the third is that you are allowed to hurt your slave.
(a) You are allowed to BUY slaves from other nations. You can’t go on slaving missions, and if you find an escaped slave you may not return koze to koze’s master.
(b) You can’t sell your daughter into slavery. The word “sell” refers to the customary bride-price a groom pays the bride’s parents for the privelege of marrying his daughter. Also, the betrothal may not be carried out until the girl reaches puberty. When she reaches puberty, she becomes an adult and can dissolve the contract. (In fact, in Judism a woman may not be forced into marriage under any circumstances. A man may be forced to marry a certain woman if he raped her, in which case the woman may want a husband to support a possible rape-child.
(c) You may punish your slave, but the punishment must fit the crime according to the Jewish court. The maximum amount of lashes the court may deliver is forty. Therefore a slavemaster can’t deliver more that forty lashes, and that maximum amount is for really horrible crimes, like assault or rape.
Also, Judism has slave codes. For instance, it specifically states in the Torah that if you have only one pillow or one set of clothes or one donkey, you must give it to your slave. Also, every Jubilee year you must set your slave free. If the slave chooses to go free, you must give him payment for all the work he did for you.
And yes, Jewish law is decided by the culture of the times. For instance, Zyviva wears pants because in modern culture pants are considered girls’ clothes (the modesty rules are derived from the Torah’s forbidding people to cross-dress.) In Ireland a man can wear a skirt (kilt) because kilts are men’s clothes in Ireland. I am going to become a fighter pilot because in modern times women are expected to be able to fight in the army. The law is flexible. What I love about Jewish law is that it isn’t set in stone: the Oral Law changes from generation to generation. Also, we are supposed to learn from the mistakes of the figures in the Bible (e.g. Isaac and Rebecca each favored one of koze’s sons, which led to deap-seated enmity.
Are there any other questions or challenges on the topic of Judism?
150-Yes, they do. Usually I am ‘Queenie,’ ‘J&R’ (my initials flipped and my first name is Juliette), or ‘[my last name]ie.’ No one ever calls me by my first name. This is because approximately 94% of Americans can’t pronounce it.
153-Usually, sir/ma’am is ‘Myr.’ But ‘Xoj’ is equally OK.
i do s/he his/her etc.
i agree with153.
what about
for s/he sher
for his/her- hiser (pronounced “high zer”
sir/ma’am-who says sir?
158–I say sir.
Did you like my comprehensive rant?
159- serious? like, not mockingly? w/e ur strange. lol j/k.
but still. noone exept pheonix says sir.
and i still think that int hat case the man is more important, and the woman has less rights. they are “second best”
slavery is bad, no matter how “humane”, or “better” it is. and what is so wrong with cross dressing?
157-cool…………. peopl call me “Daniel”
We have chikens and dwarf nigirian goats that are organic/free range and they tase infinitlye better than sore bought. I play the trumpet. people call me “AJ”. I also play Dnd. What is so wrong with that?
156: *jumps to defend the swiss army* No swiss soldier raped a woman because he was mad with lust from the battlefield (your words- and how the hell is a bunch of corpses gonna turn you on? unless you’re a necrophiliac, of course), since no swiss soldier has ever BEEN on a battlefield. So there. And rape isn’t something uncontrollable.
(160) No.. I say sir. Only to men I don’t know. Like, if there were a a man carrying three boxes and he looke like he needed help I’d say “can I help you with that, sir?”
That was random. Whatever.
161-Absolutely nothing. Unless there’s something that you’re not telling us. Oh! *pie*
I say ‘sir’ as well, to older men. My father, my grandfather, random people I don’t know (cashiers, butlers, bodyguards, innocents). And I also say ‘ma’am’, but not as often. I was raised to be polite.
158- you have never seen the business letters adressed sir/madam, or peoplesaying what would you like to drink ma’am/sir.
and. no offence meant, hiser sounds loike a type of cattle.
162- no swiss army has raped while fighting for the swiss, but what about while they were fighting as mercanaries for another country?
160- what situation are you refering to?
and also, jews no longer own slaves. and to condem them for doing so in the past is unjust unless you wish to condem every nation for doing so.
i think the energy nessacary for doing that would be better spent dealing with the problem of modern slavery/slavery-in-all-but-name.
and now Xojes, i must depart.
153- how do you pernounce (sp?) xoj?
well, no one i know says sir!!!!!!!!
so there.
and americans don like words w/ x’s in the beginning. they like cattle. so, hiser win, by popular apppeal. and the business letters are dated. and written. i said that noone said sir. anyeay, its not that big of a deal to just write sir/;madam on business letters. they can kepp doing that. anyway, how do you think the average american would react to having to write “dear xoj” or w/e ?
I’m going to use Zyviva’s langue for my reports.
167- 1. my word for him/her was koze which does not start with x.
2. while when writing., s/he is quick and easy, it is not so in spoken launguage. kep on the other hand, is quick and easy. simple to spell too.
america claims to be a land of equality, it is high time the language began to reflect that belief, and one of the easiest ways to do so would be to use kep, koze, koze’s and xoj. also, often people whose jobit is to serve things (i.e. waiters) say sir or ma’am.
in todays world, non-gender singular pronouns are nessacary.(sp?)
xoj is pronounced x-o-j (the ‘o’ is prounounced like in rot) i prounounce xoj with an ‘x’ sound for the first sound, but if you can’t say/figure wout what i mean, it can be prounounced zoj.
i, like phoenix shall begin to use the words kep, koze, koze’s and xoj.
also- on a soley MB note. i am unsure about certain peoples genders, and will be much relieved to use kep and koze in regard to them.
People have invented various gender-inclusive pronouns. My father came up with en (possessive ens), which he said was short for “entity,” and used to use it in his letters to me. It has the advantage of being easy to write and pronounce, and Dad kept hoping it would catch on. I once met a group of people who all agreed to use co (possessive cos). I think Muse may have an article about this topic in the works.
I will gladly use ‘kep’, but I’m too lazy to say the two syllables of ‘koze’ (unless it’s only one; I’ve been saying ko-zay), and I flat-out refuse to use ‘xoj’. Maybe something a little more English-sounding? I love the idea, though. Chinese, for example, has very versatile pronouns. ‘Wo’, ‘ni’, and ‘ta’ are the only three (except for ‘nin’, which is a respectful variation of ‘ni’ and pretty much the same thing), and you add ‘men’ to the end to make a plural and ‘de’ to make a posessive. So ‘Wo men de’ would be ours, ‘ta de’ could be either his or hers, and ‘ni men’ would be y’all. Very nice.
By the way, I do say ‘sir’.
165: I HIGHLY doubt a member of the vatican guard ever raped anybody But yeah, that IS possible, but how long has it been since swiss soldiers stopped fighting as mercenaries?
171- you want something more english sounding then xoj, and then you suggest chinese words?
koze is one sylable, i agree that two sylables is to much.
and if xoj is too foreign, how about Myr, (see post 157). but how is myr pernounced?
172- And how long has it been since these rules were written? My bet is before there was anything you could call switzerland.
174: Problem is, there are still people who follow these rules and interpret them in a certain way. And Helvetia has always been and always will be!!!!!
174- You could maybe say Helvetia has existed since the first century BC, though it wouldn’t be entirely accurate, but these rules were written before that. And what is your problem with people interpereting rules in the way they see fit? As far as I know, hassidic/orthodox jews are one of the least of the worlds problems.
176: I wrote that about helvetia just as a joke, but it got me thinking… And I have really no idea when you could start to talk about Helvetia existing.
But what rules are you referring to? The bible? Because that wasn’t written in 100BC.
The Torah, where the laws discussed came from, is considered to have been officially compiled in 400 BCE
176- how are orthadox/chasidic jews a problem at all? i certainly don’t consider myself a problem- well, no more then any human. i am somewhat of the opinion that the world would be better if all humans packed up and left, but my instict for survival of the species will not permit me to encourage that.
178- if not earlier.
The books of the Torah was compiled in 539 BCE by the Anshei K’nesset HaGedola, the People of the Great Court. The Oral Law was put into practice in about 1050 BCE, give or take a decade.
How come everyone attacks me about Judism but jokes around with Zyviva? She’s the one who threatens to stab people to death with chopsticks. I’m the nice guy here. This is SO unfair…
180- tis just that jokes do not come as easily when speaking to someone who has the dignity and honor so inherent in thee, m’lord.
speaking with reall bad old english grammer is fun!
I shall pwn ye all.
Juieb, please, please, please, answer my question in post 179.
183- I can’t answer your question, but we grow spelt (a grain) and harvest it to be made into motza for Passover. We grow it kosherly (is that a word?) and every year a bunch of chasidic rabbis come to oversee the harvest. Some of our spelt gets flown to Israel where it’s blessed. Spelt is used like wheat but people that are intolerant to wheat products can eat it, so if you ever eat spelt motza, it might be made ot of our spelt.
184- thats cool. you know, i have seen matzah spelled matzah, motzah, motza, matza, and other ways to. sometimes even different ways in the sam artice/ box.
156-“Crazed with lust from battle”? Excuse me? Crazed with fear, maybe. But lust? No. And Canadians DO NOT RAPE PEOPLE! We don’t ride moose to school, we don’t spend our time playing hockey, we don’t drink maple syrup or ginger ale more than anyone else does, we don’t go killing wolves with our bare hands like Viking Wolfskins, and we don’t rape people. And we don’t get ordered or told to rape people-it’s a CRIME.
184-Motza! That’s so cool. I will try to look for spelt motza.
My Social Studies teacher cannot pronounce the word ‘chutzpah’ in any way, shape or form. He calls it ‘Huttz-pah’ when in fact this is wildly erroneous, completely wrong, and totally incorrect. It’s CHUTZ-pah. With a little Yiddish throaty noise.
156 – I’m not sure what you mean by battle lust? It sounds like something that the Orcs get in Lord of the Rings, if you ask me. And even if there is such a thing, I don’t think it excuses raping women. Anyone who is not able to control their emotions like that clearly should not be a fighter.
186- i remember watching RV (the movie) and when my brother and i heard the boss say chutzpah (with a ‘ch’ [like in cheese] sound, we cracked up.)
i am still waiting for an answer to post 179
186-what’s wrong with vikings….?
189: Nothing. Vikings are teh pwn. NP (now playing): Manowar: The Sons Of Odin.
NP-angel of death-slayer.
*goes to musik thread
haha… as expected, no one can remain focused.
Who here believes that Tecnocracy could work?
tecnocracy-as in machine gov’t?
well, sounds great. but who programs? and theyd hav to be vv smart. so, be evil, in their best intrest. sould work, but too many problems&risks.
193-never. technocracy would work as much as trusting a priest to tell you the word of god. no technician could help programing the machine in favor of what they believe.
Has anyone looked up “technocracy”? Here’s how one online dictionary defines it:
tech·noc·ra·cy (tÄ•k-nÅk’rÉ™-sÄ“) pronunciation
n., pl. -cies.
A government or social system controlled by technicians, especially scientists and technical experts.
wait, so the person i’m supposed to trust my country to is some one whose main qualification is that they can put some idodes together, or maybe that they spend their time smashing things together to try and make them stick (how do you think they got element 118?)
no thanks. i don’t want to smash into another country again and again until we stick for 0.003 of a second.
Law teacher told us that technocracy meant government by the experts. When either Plato or Aristotle (can’t remember who- think it was Plato) developed the theory, the ‘experts’ would have been the philosophers. That would work, IMO. But today, I think that one of the main immediate problems would have been: who decides who the experts are? Now I think it should be like this:
At the top, expert psychologist, sociologist and economist, to analyze the current situation and decide what to do about it. Then the lesser experts (architect, geologist, musician, ecc.) would make sure it gets done in the best way possible.
Experts should be experts based on specific test they can take.
Whoops, sorry, haven’t been on this thread for a while.
Zyviva- I think I wrote that in response to FS’s comment “problem is, there are people who still follow these rules and interperet them in a certain way.” I meant that people who are going to interperet the torah that strictly are not really the worlds biggest problem right now. I’m jewish, and I have tons of Orthodox/hassidic relatives. Even though I don’t believe in some of their practices and/or beliefs I don’t think they’re a problem, sorry if you misinterpereted that.
It doesn’t matter who governs, nobody is so moral that they won’t be inclined to use their power to benifit themselves, whether in small or large ways. For example, the presidents tax cuts mainly benifit the extremely wealthy, which would include himself and most of his friends. Personally, I think having a government based on actually ability to do the job so as to benifit those who have chosen you to govern would be great. But its not happening, and I doubt it ever will.
and who makes test? obviously biased. the test maker decides who is qualifed.
um, this is about abortion, its not really related to any of the recent posts i dont think but i just have to get out. ive only ever really argued with one anti-abortion person, so what im about to say may not really be accurate, but when my friend makes what passes for her point, she always says “its still a baby.” never “its still a person” or “its still a life” or something like that. has anyone else ever noticed that? its like just because its a baby and looks cute (honorable men can differ . . . ) it has more of a right to life than an older person.
It’s instinctive to want to protect babies. Our genes tell us the next generation is more important. That’s why we find babies so cute, evolutionarily, they have no other defenses, so the only way they survive is if we want to take care of them. I’m not saying they have more right to life than any other person, just that it’s natural to feel babies are more important, and you shouldn’t blame your friend, even if she is, or you feel she is, wrong about abortion.
202-actually i havent noticed that. But im a boy, so w/e. i think that before birth, there is not really a setient person. and being forced to have a child is horrid. (not from expeirience or anything).
Personally, I’m not sure about the ethics of having children at all in today’s crowded world. To purposefully concieve a child while there are babies- and older children- in need of a good home through adoption seems as though it will only exacerbate society’s problems of overpopulation and starvation. Studies show that if we do not radically change our habits now, we are headed for, well, the end. Complete loss of resources, food and water wars, extinction of snow and huge volumes of animals, human overpopulation, rampant disease, and ultimately, extinction. Before you argue for a fetus, think about what its quality of life will be. Also, it is honestly a ball of cells. Nothing more, nothing less. Medically speaking, it is not a person. it is merely a ball of cells that has the potential to be a person; It is not actually a person until it is able to survive outside the womb, and then it is still an unfair burden on the mother. If you say that it, a cluster of cells smaller than your iris, has a right to life, then you violate the mother’s constitutionally protected rights to liberty and the pursuit of happiness. (and this whole mess about the Plan B pill is just silly. If you won’t do your job, then you shouldn’t be a dispensing pharmacist! What will they try to outlaw next?)
“Abortion should be safe, legal, and rare” – Bill Clinton
193. Define “work.” I think a technocracy wouldn’t last long, but would run a decent country while it lasted.
The thing about abortion is that people who want to outlaw it are starting at the middle of the problem. No one should ever need an abortion in the first place. Birth control should be easilly available and widely used by people who don’t want to have kids. If abortion is illegal people will find illegal abortions which are probably dangerous and expensive. I agree with Clinton.
205. I see your point, but I justify to myself my desire to have children with the argument that my children will be well fed, live in a loving housold, and grow up to do good in the world (I hope).
I’m pro-abortion. I don’t think foetus’ are sentient beings, and I disregard newly-born infants too (some extremists views, for a change ). First of all, the world is already populated, and I believe euthanasia should be legal. Second, what about thoughtless young girls, rape victims, all those kinds of people, what can they do? Abortion is necessary, and a big screw you to all the pro-life anti-abortion fanatics and extremists. (I’d have used a much stronger swearword, but I doubted the GAPAs would have let it through)
And the tests for a technocracy would be established by either the first set of experts, or set by universities, or democratically voted on.
I’m not quite sure what I think about abortion. I think that it should be legal, because which would you rather have: a dead baby who didn’t have to/get to see the world because it didn’t even know that it was alive or an abused, bad, not well taken care of child? I’d vote for #1.
Clinton says it perfectly. Yay for smart presidents.
i think that the fetus shoudl not be aborted if, should it be a premature birth at that moment, it would have a chance of survival. if it wouldn’t then abortion is OK.
206- yes, people should be able to prevent unwanted pregnancies, but rape victims have no way of predicting that they will be raped.
I support abortion, only because I know that unwanted children would not have a good quality of life. However, there are very few excuses for needing an abortion, rape victims and medical necessity excluded. If you can’t buy contraceptives from the drugstore, you shouldn’t being having sex if you don’t want a child. It’s as simple as that. Also, abortions should not be allowed after the fetus can feel pain. It’s inhumane, and if you didn’t get the abortion before that than thats your fault. The case for anti-aboritonists is that one of these babies could grow up to do something great. Well, intelligence is largely determined by genetics and obviously their parents weren’t too smart if they wanted an abortion, now were they? Same for stem cell research. Just cells, nothing more. And otherwise, would would happen to this child? Abandonment, legally or illegally? Murdered by its parents? Growing up resented by it’s family and in, most likely, poor living conditions? Your absolutely right, we don’t need overpopulation, and that’s why abortions should be legal.
I think that a lot of the anti-abortion people miss the point about the pro-choice thing. If you’re pro-choice, it does not mean that everyone should have to get abortions, or that a woman who believes it is wrong and/or does not want to get one should be forced to. Rather, it means that one believes that all women should have the chance to choose for themselves what they think.
And also parental notification laws are unsafe and unrealistic; as much as we might like to think it isn’t so, there are people, girls, who really _can’t_ tell their parents. And laws won’t force communication in a family situation like that; instead, they might mean that the girl ends up in the hospital and loses the baby anyway.
210- also, alot of the stem cells used in research would not even have the chance to become babies anyway. take for example, the stem cells in umbilical chord blood. if those celsl aren’t used for research, what will happen to them? thrown out.
211- parental notifications and spouse notifictaions mkae little sence. some girls cant tell their parents for the reasons you mentioned, an a spouse isn;’t the one carrying the baby, so while they ar involved, they don’t go through it. of corse, if you can’t tell your spouce, you should get a divorce, but that may not be posssable., depending o nthe situation.
also 201 and all related posts- no test an decide qualifiation. it would be astanderdized test, no matter how it was framed. ven if it were an essay test, no one takes the SAT essay as a firm show of bility. in fact, many collegesdiscarded it entirly.
There are two cases in the abortion discussion: Voluntary and involuntary pregnancy. If you are raped, you should be allowed to get an abortion, end of discussion.
However, if you became pregnant through voluntary means, you should not be allowed to get an abortion unless the pregnancy is a danger to the mother.
If the mother got pregnant voluntarily but rejects the baby or has no funds to care for it, the answer is simple: foster care. I have long thought that you should have to have a liscence to have a baby.
Julieb, about the intelligence thing: do babies have any less right to live if they are stupid, or mentally or physically handicapped? Hitler sure thought they didn’t.
To all: there should be a time limit to have an abortion. There IS a certain time when the neural connections in a baby’s brain develop; after that time (about four or five months) there should be no abortions unless, as previously stated, there is a danger to the mother.
Due to the unfortunate fact that I usually represent the “conservative” (actually, I lean to the left), religious point of view, which in modern society is picked on a whole lot, and everyone feels the need to attack me, I await the flames with open arms.
For the essay topic: Canadia doesn’t make people take the SAT. Yaaay! The only good thing about this ruddy country…
213- yes, once the fetus can fel abortion must be illegal. BUT “voluntary” yet unwanted pregnancies just introduce unwanted babies, there are barley enough foster parents to go around now. why introduce another baby in an alreadty overpopulated planet?
i find it interesting how FS does not stop bragging about switzerland, and phoenix doesn’t stop complaining about canada.
213- I didn’t mean it that way. All I was saying was that babies from unwanted pregnancies are much more likely to be born addicted to drugs or with fetal alchohol syndrome and other complications. These children grow up in poor living conditions with absent fathers and abusive mothers in no condition to care for them. I’m not saying there aren’t exceptions, but the reality is these children are not going to have happy lives and by making abortion legal we are not killing people who would be the geniuses of tomorrow, as many right to life people claim.
211. Parental notification laws are designed to put a hurdle in front of girls looking for an abortion.
The problem with drawing a line when a fetus can feel pain is that we can’t know. I don’t know about y’all, but I don’t remember being a fetus. Besides, a person experiences pain in a full life, starting with the pain of being born, so not aborting a pregnancy will not really save anyone pain.
213. Please don’t bring Hitler into this. None of us here are Hitler.
Niugnep: Heya–I never said Julieb is Hitler. I said that Hitler believed that only the human “elite” should be allowed to live.
And yeah, I don’t remember being a fetus. My earliest memory comes from when I had just turned two years old.
Julieb: Sorry for the misunderstanding. But I think that living (albeit having a very unpleasant experience therein) is worth it. What if a sick, poor inner-city kid saved from an abortion trips over a crack in the sidewalk. An old lady on a stoop brings the kid home to put on a band-aid. The old lady’s visiting grandson sees his grandma putting on the band-aid and decides to be a doctor. He grows up to be a doctor and has a kid. The kid is inspired, also, to become a doctor because her father was one. She grows up and cures cancer.
Not all benifits are direct. I know that this scenario is a chance of a million to one of happening, but killing the inner city kid before he falls down destroys even that one chance.
I complain about Canadia because I hate it here. FS brags about Switzerland because he loves it there. Seems simple to me.
Wow. No one has jumped on me yet. Frankly, I’m surprised. This generation of Musers seems to enjoy beating up on poor ol’ First-Generation Phoenix.
206- Work. Force over distance.
Meh. Too many posts. I’m on the fence about abortion. I don’t wish to go into that right now. And I hate the SATs. Bloody Critical Reading section. But I got a 700 in math last time, so that made up for it. Overall, I think I had a 1980. Which I am so totally going to beat this year. And try to at least get an 8 on the essay, like the last time. I do not like the essay.
193- I almost do…. I’d be afraid of crazy elitists.
170- Ooooo cool. Didn’t someone here come up with new pronouns that meant her/his and stuff like that…..They posted it a while ago….*scrolls up* Oh, 153. *facepalm*
I think we need a new HT thread.
218. That’s why I asked. I didn’t think that the government of a bit of land would effect the amount of force applied to it or the distance it would move.
219. Ditto. This one is getting kind of quiet, probably because it is now on the second page of threads. Please, GAPAs?
I don’t know. I’m sort of enjoying the peace and quiet.
208-clinton=mediocre
210-should be? they are
212- wow…. you typed that in a hurry.
214-exactly
216-didnt you read the muse? you cant remember anything before you have linguistic skills.
i agree with julieb on abortion.
*starts chanting* NEW HT NEW HT NEW HT!!!!! etc…….
221. Quiet is boring.
*joins chant*
Pretending Naziism never happened and putting it in a box away from everything helps nothing. Please read the posts through before reacting instinctively. And abortion is a human right, for God’s sake! It’s as simple as that! There shouldn’t even BE a discussion!
Hello there! no clue what you’re talking about know, though it appears to have something to do with the holocaust and also with abortion. quick e~a opinions on those are: holocaust should be remembered and we should be reminded that similar events are happening today and try to prevent further genocides and abortion should be a woman’s choice.
Anyways, the reason I showed up so randomly and abruptly is that I think that creating a law baning gay marriage is unconstitutional. The reasons behind creating such a law are part of the christian bible. Now if some churches want to forbid gay marriage within that church, that’s fine. But you can’t ban the legal aspect of a civil union between two people for religious reasons. you can ban the religious ceremony but only if you are a church. There is no good non-religious reason why two men or two women can’t have the legal priveledges that a couple of a man and a woman have. The constitution says, in the first amendment, that “Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof;…” Isn’t forming a law because of a religious belief against the constitution?
213- say a couple uses birth control but the woman still gets pregnant and she’s in college or something and going through pregnancy would be difficult. what should happen then according to what you beleive?
211- “I think that a lot of the anti-abortion people miss the point about the pro-choice thing. If you’re pro-choice, it does not mean that everyone should have to get abortions, or that a woman who believes it is wrong and/or does not want to get one should be forced to. Rather, it means that one believes that all women should have the chance to choose for themselves what they think.”
very true. I am not for abortions nor against abortions. I am for women being able to decide whether an abortion is necessary.
156- why exactally does the Torah forbid cross dressing?
226- Your completly right, but unfortunatly our nation is run by white protestant males or people with equivelent views to make it seem more diverse, who can get away with almost anything they want because the public is either to stupid to realize what’s going on or has forgotten that the constitution assures the people the right to regulate the government in ways other than just voting.
I don’t know how it is in Switzerland, but in the US we are constantly being reminded it. Every year in school we read a book about it, we hear one sob story after another. Everyone talks about drawing lessons from it, and then fails to react to genocide in Africa (but that doesn’t really have to do with what I’m saying here). I totally agree that it was tragic and wrong and everything, and that we shouldn’t forget, but maybe we should be kind of over our grief enough to lay off at least a little bit, maybe even a lot, by now. Anyone who thinks that that statement was insensitive should know that I have Jewish heritage, ie, I would have been killed in a concentration camp too.
Things like Japanese internment and the Holocaust should be remembered but not stressed. Its important to know what happened, and know to never, ever let it happen again.
Even though it is.
SAVE DARFUR!!!!!!!
231-exactly. it IS happening, and ignoring it isnt helping,
Aplause! It can’t be that the US had an obligation to the people of Iraq, but does not now have one to the people of Sudan.
231- Yes, but how can we save it without escalating the violence. The UN needs a plan. For now, the only way I see that I can help is by donating to MSF (which I have)
