Yay! It’s back!
Did you hear about the seized golf course in Caracas? I’m all for it. People have a right to hold property, but the right to play golf in front of people with no houses doesn’t matter.
Another?!? I can’t keep up.
Sooooooooo… what do y’all think about Steve Irwin?
*Sniffle*
who’s Steve Irwin????
3- soooooo sad!!!! how old was he, 45?
1- explain?
Yay! A new one!
kay, guys- steve iwin dying is bad and all, but it is not the kind of discussion this thread is made for. There are alot of threads. pick one of them.
so I’ll ask again- is any one here probush, antigay, or antiabortion?(not to say that anyone who is one is all three, just that most muse bloggers aren’t and we really need some oposition)
What is this for, really?
What are thoughts on the death penalty?
(3,5) It bothered my mom so much that she searched up all the info she could find….
But I think it is pretty sad that there are people willing to show the footage of his death.
That’s not very respectful.
44.
(7)Yes, but it is a hot topic.
here are my thoughts:
Gay
Some people might think its a sin. Some people might think its a little strange. But that’s no reason to FREAKING OUTLAW IT! People should be able to do what they want, no matter what others think.
Abortion
Same thing. Just butting into other peoples lives. If you don’t like abortion, then dont do it yourself.
I’m a radical left who believes that religion in general should be outlawed. Communists had a good thing but didn’t know how to use it properly.
7- None of the above. I am a strong democrat.
12- I wouldn’t go so far as to outlaw religion. For a LOT of people, that might be an impossible change, because of their heritage and the way they were brought up. I don’t think there should be any reason to illegalise any belief, unless it puts people or animals to harm. And…”in general”? Are there any exceptions? Which religions? As an agnostic, I prefer none over another. People have the right to practise as they please and it should be kept that way. Preventing the Church and State from interfering together is something we have to successfully bring around and keep. Separation of Church and State!! If you’re such a “radical left”, why are you connecting Chruch and State, anyway?
Communism can work very well in small groups. Unfortunately, the population of countries such as China and Russia are not very small.
1- Somehow that’s not right….It can’t really be called immoral or unconstitutional, because they do hold the right to hold property and they’re not harming anyone. It also cannot be called inhumane because each and every human being holds (or has held at one time) the ‘vice’ of greed. Its a human personality characteristic in today’s culture, to think more of yourself than others. There doesn’t have to be a right for recreational events in the sight of less fortunate people: Its just a question of basic thoughtfulness and courtesy. Homeless people need homes, shelter, food and healthcare more than those sustained people need the golfcourse, everybody knows (or should know) that. It saturates the news and media….Basically everyone is trying to help the poverty-striken, the homeless, the sick and if they don’t, they at least think about them and are thankful for what they themselves have. If they don’t take time to think about them and are not grateful, they can rightfully be labeled as self-serving.
12- you can’t. religion is a way of life. if you outlawed religion, you would just drive it under ground. and many religions would fight back with terror.
Whats wrong with religion anyway? the problem is often people don’t have any idea what the h— they are talking about hen they talk about their religion. its pathetic.
as far as abortion goes, biblicaly a fetus is NOT alive. so you can’t really be anti-abortion (for jews/christians) for religios reasons.
Jews don’t really care about gay people or abortion. Not that I know of. I mean, it’s mostly Christians, no offense to anybody.
11. ) I agree that it is no reason to outlaw it.
My friend said that he didn’t agree to it being outlawed, even though we are TOTALLY against it, and everyone thought he was crazy. He has a good point though. If the government can outlaw that, what is to stop them from getting even more things outlawed, such as certain religions, and other important things. It could be a chain effect.
15
It actually IS against my religion.
I am LDS, and we have been SPECIFICALLY told NOT to.
So it CAN be against someone’s religion.
12-Outlawing religion is so radical i’m not sure it can even be considered radical. Separation of church and state!!! Sheeshers people! Not that hard! Same goes for gay rights, that’s really a religious issue. As for abortion, idk i guess i’d go with my jewish friend’s explanation-i don’t remember the numbers, but it was for a certain time it was a fetus and not alive, and then after a certain number of months it was too old to kill or something. I would never personally have an abortion, but sometimes people do stupid things and regret them. So.
People are too caught up in policing each other. Let’s all just mind our own business, how’s that?
16 – Jew here! I dunno about jews in genral, I belong to a sort of small branch of Judaeism called Reconstructionism, a branch dedicated pretty much solely to breaking down those types of barriers. In fact, several of our rabbi are homosexual, so I can agree for myself and my peers but not for the Orthodox and other branches.
I’m not exactly anti-Bush. He seemed like the lesser of two evils at the time of the election. But it’s not like i can vote anyway. If i could, i probably would have voted for one of the third-party ones. i think a lot of people just stick to the Repubs and Demos (my new names for them) becuase they think they should vote for one of the popular choices as one of them will probably win anyway. But if everybody is afraid to vote for the third partyers, how will they ever win? So anyway, i don’t absolutely despise Bush, i just despise most of his ideas. He’s trying hard, he just has bad ideas.
Look, for the last time everybody! I’m not anti-gay! I personally think it’s wrong, but that’s no reason to outlaw it for everybody. Besides, you can’t just outlaw the way somebody is. I mean, i think gays can change, but it’s like outlawing… a religion. Which brings me to another point. If religion is ever outlawed, then call me a criminal. That would be such a huge an infringment on freedom. And while atheism (am i spelling that right?) isn’t a religion, but it is a belief, so why should religion be outlawed and not atheism?
I’m against the death penalty. Its just murder with a shabby excuse.
Abortion? Seriously, same as the gay issue. I’ve been over this a thousand times. I realize that there are new people who haven’t yet had the chance to voice their opinions, but could we please get some fresh issues?! So my opinion: It seems so wrong to me that i wouldn’t want anybody to do it, but then i realize that there are some instances when it is necessary. I think it should be avoided when ever possible. Consider this: Correct me if i’m wrong, but abortion is legal right up until birth. I was born about two months prematurely, so i could have been legally killed on the day i was actually born if i hadn’t been premature. (if that makes any sense.) As far as my parents and i are concerned, i was definately a person when i was born, if an extremely small one. I’m tired now. I’ll come back later to argue over stuff.
First, going back a few posts, what russia and china had/ have was not communism, it was totalitarianism calling itself communism. Second, I am a democrat and I completely support gay marraige. No matter what you outlaw, these people are still going to be homosexual and they have a right to happiness. Second, abortion is very sad but it is a choice to be made by the mother. In many cases, the abortions are preventing children from being raised in homes that can’t support or care for them as much as needed. Oh, and I am Jewish and it’s nothing personal, but I think some conservative cristians are really overstepping their boundaries by trying to make gay marraige and abortion illegal. These are very personal choices and should be decided upon by those they directly affect. If it goes against what you believe, thats fine but keep it to yourself and don’t let your ideas inflict on other peoples lives.
21-Kerry seemed lesser of two evils to me. Idk. I didn’t like him much, but hey, he wasn’t bush.
heh, my friend monica has an amazing shirt that says “Don’t blame me, i voted for kerry”
but i’m not getting into the bush-bashing here, don’t worry.
And i agree! New issue! Have we done immigration? Or Iran? Or did we do those? What haven’t we done people?
23- yeah. Abortion, death penalty and gay rights are over discussed. Not that they aren’t good issues and that they can’t be brought up later but now they are worn out. We haven’t discussed immigration.
21- ah yes the terrible catch-22 where if you vote for a third party, it will bring who (whom?)ever you think is the greater of two evils one vote closer to winning, but if nobody votes for third parties they will never win. if that makes any sense.
“Whoever” is correct here. “You think he is the greater of two evils” —> “whoever you think is the greater of two evils.” That’s because “whoever” is the subject of the phrase “whoever…is the greater of two evils.”
BUT
You’d write “…it will bring whomever you dislike more one vote closer to winning” (“you dislike him” (object) —> whomever).
–Your grammatically overinformed GAPA
religion is different tha belief, because most religions are imposed on people at an early age, and they have no choice in the matter. If children were NOT sent to things like sunday school and if parents don’t preach to them, we will soon have a religion-free world, with no fanatics blowing themselves up.
It can some times fell like isalm is baned
in france islam women are by law not allowed to veil their faces. Surprisingly, this hasn’t caused the outrage you might expect it to. I think it’s a good thing, sort of forced integration. And if anyone doesn’t like it, they can leave france.
27-I know plenty of people who have converted religions. You don’t HAVE to stick with what your parents teach you. Besides, there will always be fanatics, whether religious or not. Or even anti-relgious. But you can’t stomp out religion, no matter how hard you try.
20 – I’m reconstructionist, too.
24- Yes! Let’s talk about immigration!!
My views on immigration aren’t very strong, as I don’t know much about it, but I belive that migrant workers should get nice health insurance and good living quarters, and that not doing that is harming people and should be punishable by law.
long sentence.
25-it makes perfect sense!
i, personally, am a strong libertarian, at the far right end of the spectrum. if i could vote, it would be for a third-party candidate every time. i figure why break down and go against your priciples, just because you think there’s no chance that your candidate could win? when, in reality, if you vote for that person, that’s one more vote for them, rather than for someone who you wouldn’t really want in office. while you may think that voting for a third-party candidate is wasting your vote, it’s not. it’s only a wasted vote if it’s not for what you truly believe in.
32-I agree in theory, but the reality is if they’re not going to win, you’re just taking a vote away from somebody who might beat the worse evil if he had the votes. Now if more people thought like that, that would be great and i would be very happy but too many people just automatically vote for their party, without even knowing their candidate’s views.
27- Oh? What about me? Raised Catholic but with values and beliefs way closer to Judaism or Quaker. I don’t think you could ever stamp out religion. It is too much a part of people. It is important to seperate it from the government, but it could never be completely eliminated.
29- yes but by creating that law, the french have a bit of their identity taken away. Do you really want everyone to be exactally alike? To believe the exact same things? to never disscuss and try to find what is best? Everyone agreeing, no one having their own opinion?
12- I concur with your second statement. I don’t thank that religious instutions should outlawed. I just think that they shouldn’t be subsidized.
15- True. It could be considered a parasite, if you want to go that far…I have nothing against having an abortion in the first trimester, but after then, I do object.
19- Whooooo! Seperate them! Nothing productive ever comes from combining them. Just oodles of stupidity. I’m agnostic, just so you know.
Voting for third-party candidates can make a statement, even if [when] the candidate doesn’t win. Didn’t either Perot or Nader get huge percentages in certain states?? And if it isn’t for president….like Kinky Friedman…it could work. Is Lynn Swann independent, too?
27- Zurg. I finally got out of Catholic school. Where they don’t answer your “Why…?” questions. My personal pet peeve about that school occured during an insanely boring presentation called the Stations of the Cross. Because Jesus was the only person ever crucified. -/sarcasm-. At one of the stations, the reader went on about how women should totally look forward to family life and children because it was every female’s dream. And that it was horrible if you didn’t have kids because then you couldn’t pass on your religion. -multiple sarcastic remarks deleted on account of not wanting to get into a huge philosophical/religious debate- The speaker was a nun, by the way.
32- Well stated! *applause*
I’m probably somewhere between a Communist and a Socialist.
About illegal immigration, I’m pretty much ambivalent about it. On one side, the law is the law [whoooo…..identity statement] and if our government is to retain any sort of authority, the law must be enforced. However, there are so many illegal immigrants living and working in our country that it would simply be illogical to deport them all. Not to mention the expense. So, in my opinion, simply strengthening border security would make the most sense. And, of course, speeding up the immigration process. I heard, from the family members of illegal immigrants at my school, that the wait to get into the country can be manymany years. That is just absurd. Bloody bureaucracy. Some immigrants may not even be aware of some of the laws pertaining to immigration. Yes, I do think they should learn about it, but I’m guessing that some people third-world countries do not have the resources to do so. So they might spend most of their life-savings on hiring a coyote or on getting fake papers. Many people taken over by coyotes die on their way or in the desert. If fake papers are spotted as being fake, the person gets sent back to the position from which they started. Or worse. Nevertheless, granting amnesty, though it is the easiest way to resolve at least part of the situation, could be considered a “slap-in-the-face” to those who bothered to immigrate legally. But registering them as citizens would relieve some of their fear of being caught, deported, possibly sent into a hostile area, and seperated from family. I’m not talking about drug gangs here, though… And the English-Only part of the Illegal Immigration Act [I’m sure everyone has heard about it by now] is just weird. After all, [to point out the blatantly obvious] it takes time to learn the language. I do believe that companies should be punished for knowingly hiring illegals, especially if they pay them something that is below minimum wage. But, overall, I’m “on the fence” about this issue.
33- I completely agree. I really wish that it weren’t true but if they aren’t going to win your vote really won’t count. If they have a chance, go for it. I really do dislike the way that you can basically vote either democrate or republican is you want your voice heard.
35- i hate when teachers won’t say why. i think its funny that the person talking about kids was a nun. thats really how many things opperate you know. if some one tried to do that to me i would go bezerk and delibratly be expelled.
(18) But the point is that no one is holding you at knife point and saying “GET AN ABORTION!” so why outlaw it?
We need new material here, we always go back to abortion and gay rights/Bush.
What say ye about CIA prisons?
New topics…
…the 9/11 TV series? Clinton’s not pleased about that.
…Virgin Galactic’s passenger space ship? [due to first fly/launch in 2008]
…Blair’s future resignation?
27- oi! convert! anyways, stopping religion won’t stop fanaticsm because you can be fanatical about other things, such as environmentalism.
ok, so apparently i misunderstood the idea of the “spectrum”, so i’m actually at the top point of the “diamond” to see this diamond, use a search engine to find the World’s Smallest Political Quiz…it’s really good.
33 and 36-but, on the other hand, if you never vote for them, then there’s no way they can ever possibly win, so you’re not only giving a vote to someone you don’t really support (necessarily), but you’re also detracting from the third-party candidate’s chances of winning. and, frankly, the third-party candidates would have a chance if people didn’t take the view that you (36) just illustrated. actually, by giving your vote to the third-party candidate (if that’s who you want to vote for), you’re giving the good person a better chance of winning, rather than an evil, whether it be lesser or greater.
33-i agree with you on the other point, though. people do tend to just vote for their party, no matter what that candidate’s views are…..it’s sad, really. also, a lot of youths tend to go with whatever their parents say (not to diss anyone’s parents)…..they should really research all the candidates and make their own decision.
36-your voice will be heard, just saying something different.
35-thank you!
Gay Marriage
marriage, as defined in The Reader’s Digest Great Encyclopedic Dictionary is: a legal contract, entered into by a man and a woman, to live together as husband and wife. to me, this means that unless one of the “partners” has a sex change, they can’t be married. they can enter into a civil union, but they can’t get married. i don’t have a problem with that, but tradition is tradition, and let’s stick to it. also, i don’t want them to shove it in my face. i’m not against them, but i don’t have to support them, either.
Abortion
my dad has a good take on this one: take the fetus out alive, and if it can survive on its own (i’m not saying it necessarily can, but still…), then let it. no killing. i think that’s a pretty fair take on the issue.
apple crisp to anyone who reads this whole thing. yes, apple crisp. i dare to be different!
7-
Alright, so I am anti-Bush, pro-gay…
However, I am anti-abortion.
That does /not/ mean I am pro-life.
I am pro-choice, anti-abortion.
Not to say, under certain conditions, I might get one myself.
Not to say that I think I /would/ be caught under those conditions.
And another hot-topic issue: Myspace.
Definitions of words change. Gay, for instance, can be defined as happy.
Myspace is just pathetic. A common gathering ground for “trendy” idiots who can’t figure out the timer buttons on their cameras and post so many things that pages take longer to load than they’re worth.
43-hey! i have a myspace….i’m not a “trendy” idiot…i don’t even think i’m “trendy” for having one. to me, it’s just a fun way to socialize.
Hot Topic-Lincoln Park dress codes (for those of you who don’t know about it, Lincoln Park Schools, in MI, adopted a dress code that prohibits students from wearing sports jerseys, studded jewelry, jogging suits, shirts with messages or pictures, cargo pants, sandals, fleece camouflage, and more). it’s actually a pretty “Hot Topic” in MI, already…..a bunch of poeple think it’s unfair, especially the parents, who say that they’re now going to have to buy their children new clothes. the Lincoln Park School Board Director says that he thinks that parents are also reluctant to be responsible. if you want to find more information, you can look it up. i think that not being able to wear flip-flops (part of the code) IS going a little over the top.
hey! speaking of myspace…GAPA, what say you to an issue on today’s teens and technology? an article on myspace could be included…i think it would be interesting….you could start a counter!
myspace is lame, but i’m guilty of having one… i just have one so i can be friends with metalreviews.com. w00t! everyone go sign up and learn!!!!
it’s actually a very diverse site. musical discussions range from the latest Gorgoroth to Steve Reich minimalism.
45: yah that would be kinda cool.
44- We have a dress code like that at our school.
45- Indeed. It’s always nice to know the thoughts of members of the older generation.
NEW TOPIC: Katherine Harris.
I loathe her with a passion. Seriously, after hearing about what she said about Catholicism and the seperation of church and state. That’s just…NO. Just NO. I’m really angry at the moment. *storms off*
Sorry for the double post…but…
“They keep talking about drafting a constitution for Iraq. Why don’t we just give them ours? It was written by a lot of really smart guys, it’s worked for over 200 years, and we’re not using it anymore.”
-George Carlin
48: Katherine Harris and Jeb Bush have had an affair to remember (but not to recount- so no one sue me)
46-you have a myspace? what’s your user name, if you don’t mind me asking? you don’t have to tell, i’m just curious….
49-ah! that is an EXCELLENT quote!!! props to you!
New Topic: is it right for prostitution to be against the law? as in, does the government have any business interfering with a deal made by two consenting individuals?
[Snip! We discourage MuseBloggers from giving out contact information for other websites. –Admin.]
and I think that prostitution shouldn’t be illegal as long as it isn’t forced. So every prostitute should like have a police-given license.
44-At my camp, we have regulation panties, but the director has a foot-wide, 6-inch-wide tattoo on her back. Go figure.
46-Steve Reich! Oh sorry, that’s off topic.
51-No, the government does not. Look at Hamburg. That’s where ‘Ticket To Ride’ came from-health officials inspected prostitutes and hung tickets around their necks to signify that they were free from venereal diseases. Sorry about the digression. Look at Amsterdam. Americans are so on the squeamish end of the continuum. Even gynecologists don’t see naked patients. We call bathrooms ‘restrooms.’ It’s sad.
44-there’s something like that going on in Reynoldsburg (sp?), they can’t even wear shirts with writing on them unless it’s for like a skool sport or something and they can’t wear hoodies or anything…but apparantly there was a gang war there last year, so that’s why. i don’t really know much about it…
I don’t have a myspace. Did you know that Myspace was originally a dating site?
Well what can you wear?! I’m against dress codes. My school does have one, but i was just told ‘use common sense’, and i haven’t gotten in trouble for anything. I mean, if somebody showed up with no clothes at all, that would be bad, but i think most people have enough sense not to do that. Well, maybe…
I despise myspace. It’s just dumb. I see how it could be practical for long-distance friendships, but you’d have those people’s email adresses anyway, and they’d already know what you look like, so it’s useless. It’s a hard way to communicate with freinds, and an easy way to give enemies personal info.
Even bathroom is a euphamism. It is a small percentage of the time that one enters a bathroom to take a bath.
Being a religous person myself, i don’t think that keeping parents from teahing their children the things that they believe to be true would remove religion from society. I don’t believe that religion is so stupid that the only reason people belive in them is that their parents believed in it. i know plenty of converts. Unless you made it so that everybody was totally ignorant of religion and was unable to obtain information on any of them, you couldn’t stamp it out. And in my opinion, information control would be and is a terrible thing.
What is it with myspace? All my 12 year-old friends have them I hate most blogs except this one. This one is so safe .NObody can harass anyone on Muse blogging. We rock!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
*hugs computer*
*harasses arasia*
haw haw! pwned!!
51- Thanks.
57- Indeed. And if they even try, the GAPAs will smite them! Well, virtually speaking, anyway.
Semper vigilans–that’s our motto.
52-sorry. i wasn’t sure.
53-(on 44) haha! niice….like you said, go figure.
44- my skool is a private one so we do have to have uniforms. not to say that all pribate skools have uniform policy. but, seriously, there are some things that i disagree with the skool about. for example, the recently installed a healthy foods only rule. some of it is okay, but all natural 100% juice isnt any healthier than other sorts of juice.
So a new hot topic: do you agree/ disagree with the fact that Americans and people in general are getting fatter and less healthy?
I think that its a serious issue and that the number 1 thing you can do is to encourage kids to eat healthier and especially exercise more. and you can help with the exercising by not giving out homework that keeps us inside all day.
I think dress codes are stupid. Ppl should wear wvr makes them happy…even though I can’t stand looking at the waif-ish girls at my skool who wear like, those tiny shorts, a cami…and nothing else.
(57) MySpace is not a blogging site. It’s a “OMG DID U SEE KELLY WIT MARK??????????????????????? HE IS SOOOOOOOOOOOOOO HAWWWTTT!!!!!111” site. It’s puberty on the internet, very annoying. Mentions of it are known to drive me into long rants on its futility and worthlessness.
DO NOT DO AN ARTICLE ON MYSPACE. DO NOT CONFORM. Persist brave Muse, persist! HUZZAH!
-all caps-
Yeah I can type out my various reasons of dislike for MySpace if anyone wants to hear about it, but you don’t so there.
62- We have a health foods policy. We can’t have parties. So we have things like edible representations of the lessons and cultural food experiances
64- …Indeed….perhaps we should have a new things we like and dislike thread? I strongly dislike the pictures in which the camera is visible. [You all know what I mean] After all, most cameras do have a timer button. The only thing I do like about it is how you can download music there. I’ll admit to that.
We have a pretty lazy dress code. I’m not even sure what it is exactly. Everything i have works though.
62-well the big thing about it was that reynoldsburg is a public skool
As for americans getting fatter, i guess they are but i don’t personally know anybody who’s too terribly obese, so i know next to nothing about this issue.
64-I’ve given up ranting to people about myspace. Now when people ask “y do u hate myspace? it roxxxx!!!1!1” i just give them a blank stare. Or a … which is basically the same thing. yay ellipses!
no dress codes here.
I used to go to a private school where I had to wear a plaid jumper, but now, in a public high school, it’s just the usual, ‘don’t let people see parts of you they don’t want to see’
14-Pshaw! Golf is sooooo bourgeouisie.
i don’t really think dress codes are right… i mean, you are what you wear! didnt muse have an issue on that? its just, wear what you want, and if someone doesn’t like it, it’s their problem.
some friends were commenting about this guy wearing supposedly girls pants, and how it was so “wrong”. its not wrong! they can wear what they want!
On the issue of Myspace:
I am an avid user. Normally I don’t see such blatant name-calling on this board, quoth, ” “trendy” idiots who can’t figure out the timer buttons on their cameras and post so many things that pages take longer to load than they’re worth. ”
I mean really, for me and pretty much all of my friends, it’s a common ground for friends to communicate information easily. I would also like to mention that I have /never/ seen anyone post anything remotely close to ” “OMG DID U SEE KELLY WIT MARK??????????????????????? HE IS SOOOOOOOOOOOOOO HAWWWTTT!!!!!111″ ”
On Myspace, you can talk to people with similar interests in an easy-to-use format. Seriously, where else am I going to find a whole bunch of people who like Thundercats?
How else will I keep in touch with my friends from the Bubble Cult?
I mean, sure, there’s email, but it’s just not as /nice/.
And there’s information! If I want to contact all of my friends quickly and easily, do you think I’m going email all of them?
No way!
And you can find new music, a feature that I personally do not use very often, and old favorites.
And once again, to say that everyone who uses Myspace is a trendy idiot is offensive. I mean, I go along with some trends, but I am /not/ and idiot.
I end.
70- well, it is a bit wrong/uncomfortable/odd looking when they’re so tight you can see every detail of their anatomy..
I said, “A common gathering ground for “trendy” idiots who can’t figure out the timer buttons on their cameras and post so many things that pages take longer to load than they’re worth.”
That’s just one group. Myspace would be its “common gathering ground.” It’s also [obviously] a gathering ground for multiple other groups. Like schools and malls are common gathering grounds for many groups. It’s just that group that annoys me. Don’t take it too personally. I still think it’s pathetic, though. But that’s because I prefer blogs/forums that have fewer users and/or more focused topics…for instance, I’d rather join a forum specifically about one of my interests, rather than a Myspace group focusing on that. Not that I could join the latter, as I don’t have a Myspace.
isn’t it fascinating that homo sapiens are the only species which developed clothing? a\nd that every group, even those seperated by thousands of miles did as well? marrige too, when it comes to that.
74- The only reason we invented clothing is because we are hairless beach apes.
Sherman’s Lagoon referance, couldn’t resist.
Neccesity is the mother of invention.
So, no, I don’t think it’s all that interesting.
Hermit crabs invented something like clothing.
75- yes, but humans evolved to be hairless. so they evolved to need something other then what they were given to keep warm.
76- yah, kinda- but it is slightly differnt. i don’t see name brand shells anywhere
Well, we’re definitely the only creatures to have invented fashion.
78-to our everlasting shame
And now humans have invented fashion for hermit crabs.
The other day I saw a guy selling hermit crabs with your choice of shell, some natural colors, but most of them painted with flashy colors and designs.
so like humans to spread our ideals to species who couldn’t care less.
but it is rather amusing
I think I will have to go into my long explanation now. Yay!
While I agree that it is a quicker and more efficient (in some senses) way of contacting friends, I’ve had a MySpace, and I frankly dislike the feel it gives off. The site is inundated with cheap and often shallow ads, and the whole concept is not very in depth.
I concede that my ill opinion of the website is biased; mostly due to the fact that 1) most of my peers have a MySpace and 2) I don’t have high opinions of most of my peers. Perhaps it’s a personal thing.
My main reason of dislike is the fact that MySpace gives teenagers a bad name/makes them look really stupid. Everyone’s inner stupid comes out on MySpace: the pouty lipped, ill posed pictures (I can SEE your arm!) , chatspeak, everything. It’s like, as I have said many many times before, puberty on the internet. People are cruel. People are too concerned with little things. (And I probably am too for making such a big deal out of it!) I hear far to often people squealing something or other about MySpace at school.
A trend is as defined by Merriam Webster online(Yes this is stupid of me to actually define it, but for discussion’s sake) “a current style or preference “. Which I think fits Misplace. It’s in so many sense a conformity- people seem to expect me to have a MySpace. When I say no, I don’t have one because I don’t like it , people seem perpelxed.
And now from a coder’s point of view: As a person who enjoys coding/HTML, it irks me that people who really don’t know a thing about it go to a premade website, take a layout and then go on to proclaim they got a new one. Granted, I can’t expect everyone to know html, and note that this is this is more of a pet peeve than anything else. But “building a MySpace page” as one newspaper put it is not even in the league of building a website. You’re inputting information, not making something that is functional.
I am in no way labeling you an idiot; there are people on MySpace who have are sensible in their reasons for using it, and I think you’re one of them. But know that you could find people with the same interests as you in many, many other places. I have been plugging LiveJournal for a long time; it is a creative HUB and quite literate.
My opinion of MySpace is not likely to change, for the record.
(73) Complete agreement. ♥
Myspace. Hmm. I’ve always had a neutral opinion of it. I do have a myspace, so I don’t hate the website, but there are a lot of things about it that bother me.
The main problem I have with myspace is its excessive amount of stupidity. Some days the whole website seems like one big idiot magnet. I think the problem is that having a myspace has become a fashionable teen trend, causing what might otherwise be a functional website to be flooded with immature, self-absorbed teenage girls who ramble on about how much they love this makeup brand or that store’s sale or this one hot guy and how much they hate books, and also with equally immature boys who just want to brag about how many girls they’ve got. Ugh. It’s not the website so much as the type of people who flock to it (cheerleaders, jocks, preps…the kinds of people I usually avoid) that make it so shallow.
As for the coding aspect, I did copy pretty much everything on my page from premade layout websites, but I see no reason to want praise for it since I’ll be the first to admit I know nothing about HTML. I agree with Axa: building a myspace page is nothing like building a real webpage. I wouldn’t have any idea how to do something as complicated as that. The people on my friends list who are always bragging about what they’ve done to their pages really annoy me sometimes. Why brag when it’s not their work? Anyone can copy and paste codes, even me.
The only good thing I can say for myspace is that it does help people stay in touch. If I didn’t have a myspace account I would have no way to keep up with friends I don’t see on a regular basis. Thanks to myspace, I can still know what’s going on all the time with friends I rarely get to see in person. However, there are many other websites with a similar purpose that are far superior to myspace, including LiveJournal, where peoples’ posts are often truly interesting. I have yet to see one “OMG he is like so totally cheating on me WAAAH” entry there, whereas I’ve seen hundreds on myspace.
While we’re on the subject, what do you all think of Facebook? Is it any better than Myspace?
83- I agree with your point on livejournal. I have one and I’ve only seen thoughtfull and friendly entries there.
As for myspace I say BAH! I like the Idea, but it’s so easy to get in serious trouble there. I mean serious trouble. For example… *Screen goes wavy as you see a girl sitting at her computer typing. You can barley make out the screen (Not going to use real usernames. “Kittykat177 Myspace” It reads. It must be her page on myspace. As the camera zoomes in on the computer screen, you see that she is on a chatboard. Somebody named (not going to use real udernames) “Jeff1020” Is on the other line. You see a message pop up from Jeff1020. It reads “Hey there KittyKat177 do U like sports?” Her fingers move as the letters appear one by one on the screen. “Yes. I play baseball.” She hits enter. Another message pops up. “Really? Cool! I like baseball.” For all she knows, this could be a freak trying to get to her. “Yes! I play for the cougers” She types. Again another message pops up. “That’s cool. Where do you live?” She pauses to think briefley before answering. “I won’t tell you, but II live in (not real state) kentucky.”. She turns out the lights.
The next day, she tells her friend about Jeff1020. “Forget about it.” Her friend tells her as they depart to go home.
She gets off the bus. She hears rustling behing her. She breathes heavily. It’s probably nothing. She continues. SHe hears footsteps and twirls around to see… nobody. She runs home. She walks into her living room and stops dead. Her mother is standing next to the sofa and a forty year old man is sitting on her couch. “Honey.” Her mom whispers. “Hey.” He shakes her hand. “I’m (not real name) Todd.” He pauses. “But you may know me as Jeff1020.” Her face twists. “I’m a policeman. By giving out the information you told me last night, I was able to track you. He explained that he worked online to make sure that children were not abusing the use of the internet before he gives a kind warning and walks out the door.*
This is a true story. A police woman came to our school to tell us this. (Not in the same way that I did. Mine was more visula than hers) And it all happened on myspace.
Litterally.
62) Not any more than the rest of the world. My dad knows lots of people who are related to people living all over the place–Spain, Australia, the UK….. And they all think it is hilarious that we think that they think of other saying we are the fat Americans.
Because they are as fat or fatter.
“fat” being used to explain overweightness so that I don’t have to write that out every time.
Somewhat realted to the obesity issue: if a person has a crease in their ear(s) it means they will/could have a heart attack in the next 10 years. My mom told me that, she read it in a magazine.
My dad and my uncle both have those…
I do NOT have a myspace. According to ————– (person) somebody who was jealous once said somthing mean about me about a year ago on it. They were made to delete it by somebody, and I don’t know who said it, but I think if not treated carefully, myspace is dangerous.
85- I heard about that.
Obesity is really depressing. I have an aunt who developed diabetes due to that. I’ll write about it later; I’m going to an amusement park with my sister and her friend. I don’t know why. But I have a book to read while waiting in the lines.
Whooooo.
i agree with the whole thing about exercise. if almost all of my free time is going into homework-i’m not exercising. the little free time i have i want to spend enjoying myself (which, as shameful as it may be, largley involves the internet and eating- or reading, but that doesn’t involve physical activity either)
My dad was really obese when I was little, but then he almost had a heart attack, so he got a quadruple bypass and slimmed down. It scared me like heck. I was six, and I woke up at like 11 and there were paramedics and firefighters and everything!!
i’m impressed you woke up. me and my siblings sleep through everything. we splept trhough a fire alarm ad=nd when my mom was taken to the hospital to have her apendix out.
obesity is disgusting. when you just think of all the people who spend their time eating… goddamit…
on myspace… quote from the Daily Show:
“on the downside, it’s filled with sexual predators. On the upside, it’s filled with sexual prey!”
85-i heard about something like that on dateline. it was creepy. but i kept my MySpace and just modified it to make as safe as possible. my parents have seen it, and my dad has my password so he can check it regularly. if there’s anything on there that shouldn’t be, he tells me…and i take it off. i might be getting rid of it soon, though.
New Topic: ok, so for a couple years now, there’ve been some speculation on whether the terrorists that attacked the WTC and Pentagon were actually Muslim. studies show that it would’ve been impossible for a plane to have fit into the hole that was made in the side of the Pentagon. there was also molten steel and iron found in the basement of the WTC, which could’ve only been caused by thermite, a very powerful explosive. rumor has it that the buildings were brought down deliberately…………perhaps even by our own government. for more information, see the online video “Loose Change”, which has a lot more on the subject.
Sorry, Fortune Cell. I was making generalizations about Myspace users, which i shouldn’t have done. I don’t have any have any need or desire for a Myspace page, but if you do, i respect that. I haven’t heard of that other one. You can’t really agree or disagree with a fact, only an opinion. I don’t know if Americans are fatter than everybody else, but we certainly are fat. Not everybody is obese, but most people you see just walking around are 10 – 20 pounds overwieght. I was watching End of the Spear last night (great movie, by the way), and during the credits, the dude who lived with this tribe of stone-age natives for most of his life talked about his friend from the tribe’s observations on America after visiting it. The guy had said something like this. “The people are so fat. They don’t hunt, they don’t climb, they don’t make gardens, and they don’t even walk. When they want to go somewhere, they just stand and the trail takes them where they want to go (in reference to moving sidewalks in airports.) There are big food houses with piles of food. In the place where you go out, there are young people. When you come, they pretend not to notice you, and then when they smile really big, you can leave with all the food.”
How cool Robert is going to Muse HQ!!!!
It does seem odd there’s not a thread for commenting on that though.
I guess it is a hot-topic. So maybe it’s not so bad.
Cool beans!!!
95- yea, I’ve heard alot about that. It’s pretty creepy. Have you heard that the same plane that crashed in the field in Pennslyvania (and all the passengers died) is still flying? I’m not sure if it’s true but I saw it on a documentary once and it seems that if that whole thing was planned by our gov’t, they would have been more careful, at least stop using that plane.
Also, there are no videos of the Pentagon plane crash, a nearby gas station had a video of it, but the FBI confiscated it and told the employees that they’d better not say anything about what they saw.
One last thing, and please no one get mad at me for it, 15 of the 19 passengers in one of the terrorist planes on 9/11 were from Saudi Arabia. What the heck are we doing in Iraq and Afganistan? And wasn’t our mission to get Bin Ladden? We’ve got him, and one of our rights is to have a trial in a decent amount of time after your arrested, have I missed the trial or aren’t terrorists allowed the same rights as everyone else?
98- didn’t you hear? they don’t. they have always been the exeption. weren’t alot of people anti death penelty, except in the case of terrorists? why not deny this too?
Noooo!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! ROBERT!!!!!! COME BACK TO US!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Good Point
Americans have killed more Iraqis than Iraqis have killed Americans in the past 10 years, doesn’t that make us worse terrorists than the Taliban?(that’s an oponion, don’t tell the gov’t, they’d send me to Iraq) Someone might argue no, because we have good intentions to help the Iraqi people. That’s true, but the Taliban is acting to please their God, they’re like Christian Martyrs and what christian hates them? How do we know who’s right? When it comes to killing people, I don’t think anyone’s right.
Pie everyone involved with this war on terror!!!!!!
I live in MD pretty close to washington, and i know peoples whose parents worked in the pentagon. Somehow, i don’t think our government would want to hurt it’s own people. The major conspiracy theory errors are
1. Why?
2. the twin towers were already down, so everyone was already patriotic and mad at the terrorists
3. Way to close to important politicians
4. They had just spent tons of $$$ building the stupid wing.
New Q-
There’s been a lot of talk about invading Iran, and it’s basically the same shpeil they gave about Iraq. Do you think we should if we got evidence of WMD’s or should we just get out of Iraq and leave the middle east the hell alone?
95&98
NO.
UMMM
SORRY
thats really kind of offensive.
i live near the Wtc, and i SAW A PLANE FLY INTO IT.
i dont really see how that could have been falked. my friend’s dad died in them. so you think the government blew them up? ummmm no.
104:) Thank you. Conspiracy theories don’t really need to be attached to our government. Especially when they are not true.
How do I know it was not true?
It would have been discovered by now, and it wouldn’t have taken them so long to get that conspiracy theory in action.
103-1. Because the government thrives on power. A government’s job is to protect its people, and in order to do that, it needs power. So, if the people need protection from “terrorists” of sorts, they will give the government more power, in order to be safe. This is what the government wants.
2. Ok.
3. Yes, but these important politicians were the ones who said that it was Bin Ladden’s (sp?) fault, and therefore couldn’t be blamed, as long as they produced enough evidence on that point.
4. True, but if the gov’t succeeded in producing enough fear, they would get more money for “protection” purposes than they even spent on the wing.
105: actually, it would take a long time with the administration doing everything it can to hinder investiagtions. But I don’t believe the conspiracy theories. What sounds to me more believable is that the government knew about the attack and did nothing to stop it (bush ignoring FBI warnings, for instance). They knew they could use it to monger fear among the country and use it as an excuse to go to war in iraq.
this whole thing about the actual crashes being faked is bull. Why don’t you tell someone who’s friend or relative died that it was all just a fake?
[Profanity deleted, courtesy of your friendly GAPAs. We try to keep MuseBlog profanity free. Some MuseBloggers like it better that way. And so do some MuseBloggers’ parents. — Rosanne]
you do realize that today is the eleventh…
107- I agree, I didn’t mean that I thought there was a gov’t conspiracy, it was just something to think about. No one will ever know exactly what happened or whose fault it was because it wasn’t any one person’s fault.
(please no one be offended by my post # 98)
Today one of my teachers said that at the time of the attacks, when she turned on the TV and the plane crashed into one of the towers, a kid stood up, started clapping, and stated that we deserved it.
That’s just mad.
104-Tell your friend that I’m sorry for him/her. I really am…I’m not a heartless person…I do have feelings, even if it might not seem like I do. But are you sure it was a commercial airline? And why does it matter whether or not it was the gov’t?
108-I didn’t say that they were faked…I just said that all might not have been as it seemed.
109-It might have been Bush’s fault, either directly or in a roundabout way. And we may someday get to the bottom of it all.
110-That is kinda crazy.
I can see why you all might not want to think that your gov’t would hurt thousands, if not millions, of innocent people, but look at the facts. And, if desired, you can compare Bush’s story to the one of Hitler…they’re quite similar. A story with even more striking similarity to our’s is played out in the movie V for Vendetta, just with slightly different situations.
Fear is a gov’t’s life-blood. Without it, a gov’t cannot survive. It’s entire purpose is to protect it’s people. If there is no need for protection, then there is no need for a gov’t, and it’s people have no reason to give it power. By increasing people’s fear, a gov’t increases people’s dependency on that gov’t, and they are much more likely to give it more power. The only way for a gov’t to get more power is if the people give power to the gov’t. Therefore, at least to me, it makes perfect sense that a gov’t would use something like the events that happened on 9/11 to instill fear in the people.
And, look, it worked.
cinspiracy theries always abound (there was muse on that once) people say it was the government (which i think is insane, do you have any idea how many people would have to be in on it and keep quiet for that to work) or the jews (what catastraphoe hasn’t? people have blamed jews for everything. even the black plague. for crying out loud, enough already)
instead oif blmaing people, let us have a moment of silence for those who died.
*silence*
OK, I know I’m a littlle late for this, but oh well…
MySpace. I’m very suspicious of it. I mean, with all those horror stories and all, yeah, but the way it functions….For instance, my friend has one jsut so she can talk to members of Weird Al’s band. I can’t help but be suspicious (as I know most everybody are), because Jim West (on MySpace) keeps sending her mesages and things. Quite freaky….About people posing as celebraties; it can not only hurt the gullible MySpacers, but also celebraties. Just recently, Brian May of Queen had a whole huge thign on his actual website about three people who posed as him on MySpace. He said he felt very intruded upon, very violated, very offended….He stated the dangers of MySpace and even proposed trying to shut it down….Anyone think of the disadvantages of that? Any ways that they could run it so it wouldn’t intrude on people’s privacy and feelings?
As for the prostitution way back when….I can’t really see a real problem with it IF we have some provisions. Firstly, it can be the person’s choice. If she (or he) wishes to have a career in that, I see no problem. If they want to give themselves away, fine with me. As long as the person is well aware of the possible consequences, they can do what they want. As a feminist, I myself wouldn’t do that, but not every woman is a feminist and might openly sell themselves without a thought.Of course, there is the SLIGHT problem with HIV/AIDS. I think that as long as you are aware of that risk and provide your own protection and prevention, you’re okay.
And now for what basically every American has on their minds today….11 September 2001. What happened was obviously a huge blow on our national feeling fo security, a tremendous catastrophie…I have sympathy for the families who lost someone that day five years ago. But I think what was done about was simply uncalled for. In terms of our nation’s and the world’s well-being, we did the unthinkable. But to ignore the wishes of the fmailies of the victims…simply disgusting. Rather than chosing revenge on the ones responsible for the attacks, families of 9/11 created a group called Peaceful Tomorrows. Their mission statment reads as follows: “Peaceful Tomorrows is an organisation founded by family members of those killed on 11 September who have united ton turn our grief into action for peace. By developing and advocating nonviolent options adn actions in the pursuit of justice, we hope to break the cycles of violence endangered by war and terrorism. Acknowledging our common experience with all people affected by violence thorought the world, we work to create a safer and more peaceful world for everyone.” The entry in the book I got this from (50 American Revolutions You’re Not Supposed to Know by Mickey Z, published by DisInfo – check it out!!) goes on to say how one member got a particularly acidic, patriotic arguement from right-wing talk-show host, Bill O’Reilly….This O’Reilly was quite nasty with his “arguements” (more like insults) and after cutting off this member, shut off his mic on the show because he was so offended by his communal goal for peace. Disgusting, isn’t it? Anyway, I found that interesting.
82- I know. I’m a coder, but not a very good one. I get mad when there’s a person on a website that will say, “Lyk, Omg! I figured out how to make a font BLUE!!! I am so totally better than you becuase I know more HTML than everybody else and blah, blah blah…”
Did you here that some news station is playing the footage from 2001 all day today as if it were happening again? Like, people will turn on there t.v.’s and here a “live report from the scene” of the towers falling. It’s sort of creepy.
*silence* I like peace. I wish humans had common sense. (not that most people don’t.) Give me a nice planet where people could settle there differences quetly anyday..
116-unfortunatley, that’s not what we have. if we want peace, at this point, we have to fight for it. i know that’s a little controversial, but it’s true.
Why is it worse for other people come into our country and kill us than it is for us to go into a different country and kill the people there? Americans have killed more Iraqis in the past ten years than Iraqis have killed Americans. I think we should focus more on the future ( what we do have control over) to make sure people just stop being killed instead of arguing over how it happened.
112- I completely agree, but thats not human nature.
111- I’ve compared Hitler to bush a few times and it is scarily similar. My grandma lived in Nazi Germany under Hitler’s rule, her views on current events are interesting.
116- can I live with you on your planet?
117- that is so not true!!! if we want peace the first step should be to get out of Iraq!!!! now!!!! (of course we should never have invaded in the first place, but that’s irreversible now)
119- if such a planet existed, i would love to be there. unfortunately it doesn’t, at least not that humans have discovered
118-well, not quite the same.
but similar in some ways!
okayyyy.
so. invade Iran.
First of all, the bush administration wont do it. everyone allready hates him for this war, if he goes into a new one, saying, “oh wait, this time there really are WMDs! this time it’ss be better!”, i think that there is a good chance that he would be impeached. Also, is this war really doing us, or Isreal, or Iraq, or any of our allies any good? No. The exact opposite. To us, its making us thousands of times more vunerable to terrorist attack. same goes for our allies and isreal. Every time a muslim exremeist wants to attack us, they will say “loook what they did to us?!! don’t you want revene for your mothers legs that got blown off by a bomb?(inncont mother, like 99% of iraqis)”.
Iraq, well, ask any iraqi.
35 and all others about immigration.-i think that it’s absoloutly ridiculous that people think that illegal immigrants are bad fo rhte economy. my da works on this, and his organization has done studies that show that immigrants help the economy immensely. this is why:they pay taxes, but do not recieve most of the benifits from them. as for tsking away jobs, do you really want to work as a meat packer in a factory?(i know there are a lot better reasons for this, i just dont feel like typing them.)They should be granted citezenship ASAP, so they can have a halfway decent living standard. Border control:has anyone ver seen “the three burials of melquades estrada?” kinda grusome, but very realistic. a border control guy is one of the main characters, and he beats women and children into the dit that he catches. also rapes mauls etc. one day he is in his truck, and hears a shot. he takes his assult rifle , and runs over and shoots the person he has heard firing. the person dies. the person was simply shooting at a coyote, to keep it off of his property. This border guard does not get prosecuted (officially.)
120-yes, it is. there’s no way we can possibly have complete peace if our rights are being infringed upon every moment of our lives!
although, i concede that, if it were possible to go to another planet where eternal peace reigned, i, too, would like to live there.
I would love to live on a peaceful planet, but i’d prefer it to be earth since no one has discovered any other planet with cocoa, cows, and sugar(ie chocolate)
124-very nice. and i mean it. cocoa, cows, and sugar are all very nice things. but so is ice cream, and if they didn’t have that, well, i’m sorry, but that just wouldn’t work.
122- I agree on your immigration point, I live on a farm and we hire Mexicans. They are really excelent workers (not to stereotype) Does anyone out there feel like grabbing a hoe and weeding our 5 acre cabbage field that week last July when it was like, 100 degrees every day? ( if not, you should have no problem with Mexican workers)We hired a crew that worked all day every day for a week, they’re tough!
124- I couldn’t agree more, especially with the cows, I love cows (ie. Bo) but there’d also better be books and the internet and muse magasine and ( I guess we’ve already got this) interesting people to talk to, lets call it Museland.
126-yes, let’s! i’ve already put in a request for a new thread on that very subject! check it out, if you can.
The main problem people are pointing out with illegal immigration is that if they can get here, so can terrorists. I think we should grant all the illegal aliens amnesty if they can prove they’re not terrorists, then have stricter border control and tighten security, which could mean deporting those who didn’t get amnesty, i.e. terrorists and drug smugglers who didn’t try or failed to become legal citizens. I mean, i understand why people sneak into the country, but it is a serious threat to national security, and if they don’t want to wait in line like everyone else, it’s too bad for them.
The other day I saw september 11 (the date) on a poster, and I thought about how it won’t be real to our kids. It will be like pearl Harbor for us. The won’t be reminded every time they see 9-11. It’ll just be something in their history books.
Who here saw the original broadcast of the towers falling and the pentagon five years ago?
What really annoyed me was that everyone under either fifth or sixth grade (can’t remember which) didn’t find out about the attacks until they were picked up or arrived home if they took the bus. My sister was in fourth grade that year and she said that they told her that there was a bombing in NY. I don’t even think they told some of the younger kids. Being in sixth grade, I watched the news all day that day at school. Luckily.
It was just so stupid that they wouldn’t let the younger kids watch it. Not to mention patronizingly condescending. That’s one of those things that really annoy me. It’s like, what? just because they’re young they can’t understand it? or they’ll be too scared. Too bad. It is [obviously] happening. They need to know what’s going on in their world. The teachers were in hysterics, but the students watched in awe. Seriously. Some parents even took their kids home. Which I wouldn’t have a problem with if they had relatives working in the tower or something, but I knew most of the kids and am pretty sure that was not the case. I was also pretty sure that there would not be an attack on a primary school in the middle of PA. [Yeah, I know about the plane that landed in a field there….but that was far away….] I guess my point is that news information about huge world events shouldn’t be withheld from people like that. It’s cruel. And I’m pretty sure that a kindergardener seeing planes crash into buildings would at least be able to determine that the world is a crazy place. You get the idea.
95 + all conspiracy-related comments: I watched loose change and it htought it had some valid arguments…
(124) For whatever reason, your post inspired me to post this.
A little lesson in animal husbandry: Cows are female cattle. Bulls are male, non-casterated cattle. Steers are casterated male cattle. Bulls do not have udders. Steers do no have udders. When you see cattle, do not exclaim” THERE IS AN COW!!!11″ because it may or may not be.
The move “Barnyard” is ridiculous because the main male character had udders. No I didn’t see it. Just the stupid commercials.
Little things like this bother me.
(129) I think that too, and it makes me very sad. Very sad…
(130) Let me tell you something: Here in California, possibly the farthest place from New York on mainland US, I’ll bet you over half of the kids didn’t even know until they got home.
People here are such…God I don’t know. On Tuesday in my Biology class not a lot of people seemed to even know it was September 11. And when they did remember, it was almost like they should be rewarded for it; because they didn’t say it in the somber way they should, they said it in the way someone speaks when they remember it’s someone’s birthday, just someone they don’t know that well. Granted, these aren’t the brightest or most thoughtful kids (Mostly sophmores and juniors taking the class because they HAVE to) but would it hurt to show some respect? Some reverance?
It made me so angry. Ignore any and all spelling errors, I[m tired and this gets me worked up.
This should be random: How does one speak like a pirate in preparation for speak like a pirate day?
133-Yes, that is very random. I don’t know if that counts as an HT….
133-There’s a thread for that.
I’m going crazy. Here’s why:
ARRIVING TOMORROW:
My half-brother (dad’s side) from London, age 25 or so
My half-sister (dad’s side as well) from SanFran, half-Chinese, age 24 or so
My two half-brothers (mom’s side) twins, age 16 or so, from Philadelphia
ARRIVING SAT.:
My cousin Johanna Jeannette, age 21, studying at Michigan U and Ann Arbor
Swiss investors (unknown)
This is going to be so interesting.
What do you think was the single event that formed Generation Y? I vote for 9/11.
132- well, to be honest i didnt realoie it was sep 11 until my teacher told me. Im not very good at remembering dates.
Somebody wrote a letter in to the local paper saying that immigration was going to lead to America’s overpopluation and that our only hope was an ultraconservative congress.
What???
IF the US overpopulates, it will be because there are too many children born of the people who are already here, not because of Immigration. And ultraconservative judges would most likely outlaw abortion, which would only make that problem worse.
(136) It was the reaction that made me sad, not the fact they forgot.
137-also, (from a worldwide point of view), immigration will reduce population, because they wll have a higher standard of living, and the higer your standard of living, the fewer kids you have
Oh, I wouldn’t worry about overpopulation. Global warming is either going to kill us or force us to move to another planet long before that becomes a problem.
130. I was in third grade, and the principal came over the intercom, and told everyone to turn on their TV’s. We saw it all and it freaked me out. I do have friends who were on vacation, though and didn’t hear about it until a week after it happened. Kinda weird.
Wow, julieb, that was SO comforting.
Global warming is not irreversable.
Although extiction is.
122: ask any Iraqi…If they aren’t being imprisoned, tortured, raped, humiliated, persecuted, shot or bombed.
in short:
The Bush administration is evil.
Thank you. I do my best to cheer up my friends (and others)whenever they get to serious or panicy to remind them we have much bigger/more immenent things to worry about.
144- couldnt agree more…did anyone know that on bush’s first week of pres. he held a closed meeting discussing ways (reasons) to invade iraq. i read that on CNN and was outraged!!!!
why doesnt anyone care more!!!!! WHY!!!!!!!!
146: because people are morons
Nobody cares any more because we (generic term) are to lazy. I mean, look at the obesity rat in America, the percent of voterers, and the unemployment rate. If this keeps going on, America will be the trash dump of the world. The only reason why you should buy an American made product anymore, is because all the bad companies have moved overseas. By the way, I play the Trumpet, the Bowed Saltry and am learning the Piano.
Tons of people care. But what can you do if you can’t get them to voice their concerns together?
148) w00t! Trumpets rock! What kind of music is your favorite to play? Mine’s jazz. (Sometimes I just stand up in the middle of some conversation, hold the air like you hold a trumpet, and start dancing to jazz music that is stuck in my head. I get a lot of weird looks that way)
jazz rocks. hey people, say why. Reasons are good things. FS, you’re not the only one who’s done this but i’m gonna pick on you because your the latest, so no offense right? But to use that example, don’t just say “the bush administration is evil” say “i think the bush administration is evil because…”
Not trying to be like the secret police force here but i just happened to notice that and it bugged me. Sorry for the sermon.
immigration, i say let them come. i’m not very well-informed, but i think mostly americans have more opportunity for education and whatnot, making us less inclined to do manual labor. If we’re not gonna do it then, why not them?
Any thoughts on the Pope’s recent…comments?
(144)
We’ve said before on this thread that you should give reasons for things you say. It all goes with the civilty in Hot Topics..
Popes “comments” were really:
hipposcritical-what were the centuries of crusades if not holly wars
rude-dont cut down other religions that harshly no matter what
extremely undipolmatic-look at who we are currently at war with..these comments put peace another step out reach
plus did u see his apology all he said was hes sorry his speech offended muslim (as if he wouldnt be offened if someone cut down christanity that harshly
the pope is a jerk, and so are the cardinals who elected him. I mean, he was bloody nazi sympathiser!!!
I assumed that I didn’t need to explain why the bushies are evil. The current state of the world should speak for itself.
152- i might if i knew what they were. where can i find them?
bush sould not be impeched becuse of the next in line :dick cheay
bush should be impeached. then cheney. then rumsfeld. then the rest…
157- no! They should all be impeached at exactly the same time!
157- see, the problem is that if we impeached Bush, we’d end up with Cheney. And Cheney is, imho, evil, and under complete control of the oil companies. Bush is just mostly incompetent.
personally i would rather they suffered death by a terrorist attack. Wouldn’t that be ironic. Dying by the very means you used to gain power.
(154) Even so, it’s good to expand on things, so we can discuss and such…
161… uh… if there is anyone who even dares imagine that the bushies have done good… then… uh… I’d have to wonder at the level of intelligence of the world.
I’m really curious as to why Museblog attracts mostly liberals. Is the Muse-reading population overwhelmingly liberal in general, or just those of us on the Blog?
154 – I don’t know if ‘evil’ is the word I’d choose. I don’t agree with our President’s current policies, or have must respect for him in general, but I don’t know if he’s ‘evil.’ What do you even mean by that? What is your definition of good or evil?
Oh, additionally, I think that the spinach scare in the midwest is very interesting, because it shows just how wide-spread our food distribution system is if people in four different states have gotten sick. I really hope this will make markets and groceries push for locally-grown fruits and vegetables (and meat, to some extent).
160-i wouldn’t go that far. On the other hand, if we wished death upon all the incompetent people in the world, that would solve all the population issues. XD But seriously, just because i don’t agree with bush and want him impeached doesn’t mean i want him dead. Actually, i honestly can’t think of anybody i would be happy about the death of…
161 – Wow. That was an extraordinarily nasty thing to say. Everyone is entitled to their own opinion, even if it’s opposite to yours. You don’t have to agree with what other people think or say, but you can’t bash it for being unintelligent either. At least, not on Museblog. Take your negativity somewhere else.
164-Oh man. Know when i first heard about the spinach? I was sitting on the couch at 6:30 in the morning listening to the radio to see if skool was delayed. Power was out, and my mom and i were walking around with no light but two cell phones and a light-up alarm clock. We find the so-called “local weather” station and catch the tail end of delayed skools. We figure it’ll come on again, so we wait. We listen for half an hour and hear about a bomb threat, a plane crash in missouri (???), the spinach, the buckeyes (i’m really getting tired of them btw), the clippers, and the governer. Oh and a lot of stuff about how sunny it’s going to be. Then power comes back on and of course we still have to go to skool at the same time. So mad rush off. Turns out only the south lost power.
Anyway, that has nothing to do with anything, but whatev.
162-Hey, i know people who do support bush. I may not agree with them, but i wouldn’t call them stupid. In fact, some of them are extremely intelligent.
*162. I’m sorry about that.
The Pope had no buisness, ESPECIALLY as a leader of a religious community, to allow hate into the Catholic church. Christianity, (and I am a Christian) already has an extraordinarily bloody past, and people cannot seem to get it through thier heads that CHRIST TAUGHT PEACE. He hates NO ONE. Not Gays, not any races, not any religions, not anyone. And to hate people in his name…It’s hypocritical.
However, Comment 166, Axa was right. She wasn’t being negative, she was pushing for a reasonable and comprehensive discussion, which is never a bad thing.
However much I do agree that Bush & Co are useless, cruel prats, I think it would be much more constructive to discuss issues and what could be done to resolve them than to just moan about them.
Bush will be gone soon. I mean, I think more people should be worried about getting someone competent elected in the next election. It’s very unlikely that things will get much worse in the next 2 years, but things could get much worse if we don’t elect someone who can remedy the situation.
150 I have the Star Wars theme music as well as the Pink panther. But I like Clasical, Rock \m/, and Jass.
169 I think most of us have that same opinion. I think a lot of us should come together in Chicago (MUSE BASE) and work on how to 1, get them out of office 2,work to cleanse thier evil and 3, make sure it dosn’t hapen again.
FrigidSymphony, give the bush administration a break. I can tell that you disagree with them but please consider that there may be people who agree with their opinions and politics. They are not trying to destroy the united states, they are trying to improve it. I do not agree with much that they are doing but that doesn’t mean I think they are pure evil. Remember: “Minds are like parachutes, they work best when open.”
(169) Agreed. I think the whole “In the Name of God” thing (with ANY relgioin, really) is just plain foolish. Additionally, I don’t see why Christianity has so many denominations. I can understand a few Protestant churches, but there’s so many it’s confusing!
It is interesting many MBers are liberal…hmm. This is why I miss MG, for the great conversation. And because she was awesome. xD
(172) That’s an awesome quote! I will use that sometime soon. ^^
152- I heard about that, but what exactly did he say?
154- Didn’t he think that Hitler and Stalin were possessed? Or was that someone else in the Vat. City?
170- 1.20.09
173- I AGREE COMPLETELY!!! Okay, this is coming from an agnostic, so it might sound a bit snarky… But I get so annoyed when people tell me what “God wants” me to do. Yeah, because they know. It’s one thing if you actually quote the Bible, etcetc, but if it’s just an opinion about a sort of behaviour, those comments are totally bogus. Aargh. And how, if you talk to a really “devout” Christian, they always seem to be so convinced that they are going to Heaven. Not saying they all do that, but I’m sure everyone here has encountered someone like that. What ever happened to being meek and modest and such? Like that story with the two people who were praying and the one was all like “thank you I’m not a sinner like that dude” and the other was like “soooo sorry etcetc” and the latter was really the “good” one??? Sorry, but I needed to vent. Thank you muchly.
I barely have enough time to go on here at lunch
172-How do you know? Did you read the thing I posted on this subject (111)? You should, and really think about it. Use your quote.
173-I’m not. I’m a Libertarian, at the top tip of the diamond.
HELLO????
what’s the hot topic?
do we even have one?
because if you want to post randomly, go do it somewhere else, like, hmm, I dunno, THE RANDOM THREAD?
I’m sorry, but I come on this thread lookiing forward to chatting about the world’s issues, and instead I find people just posting… ARGH!
*is frustrated*
163- It might be that most of the US is against Bush, not just Musers
177 – while I’d like to believe that, I don’t think that’s it. The election results were pretty close, if I recall correctly. However, things may have changed since then. Still, I don’t think that can account for the overwhelming liberalism on the MB. Perhaps Museblog reaches mostly urban areas, where there are higher populations of liberals? Most of the highly populated east-coast usually votes Democratic, doesn’t it?
176 – believe it or not, we are discussing hot topics. Read the latest posts to find out what it is!
175 – I’m not sure what you’re getting at. Can you please explain it to me?
178-If you read that post of mine, you’ll see that I think Bush either created 9/11, or knew about it and did nothing, but either way, he gained an advantage. And the diamond is on the World’s Smallest Political Quiz. Any other questions?
i think the reason most MBers are liberal is because we are generally smarter than the average Americans, and smarter people are more likely to be bush-haters.
179 – Created 9/11? Wow. I do agree with you that the recent terrorist attacks have been exploited by the media for political purposes, but I’m not sure I’d go so far as to claim that the Bush administration was /behind/ those attacks. We know for a fact that the administration knew Bin Laden was determined to attack the US, but I’m not sure that they knew the specifics of the attack enough to prevent it. We all can look back at the events of 9/11 and second-guess ourselves blue, but how do we know that we wouldn’t have made the same choices?
I guess what I’m getting at is that I don’t think it’s fair to blame the administration for 9/11. I don’t think that conspiracy theory holds much water, but I’d love to see some more information on it, if you’ve got it.
180 – Oh, I don’t know about that. First of all, what do you mean by ‘smart?’ & second of all, it’s kind of rude to generalize that all people with conservative view-points are unintelligent. Open-mindedness is key.
180) Better Bush than Kerry *shudder*
Anyways, Kerry’s face reminded me of a mule I once saw. (No offence, truly. Just stating fact.)
180- I think the term “bush-hater” is very strong. I don’t hate anybody, although i happen to agree with most people here that bush is a bad president.
NEW HOT TOPIC: Free Speech?
This is actually not such a black and white issue. Please, please please support whatever it is you say!
i love free speech. it means we can say whatever the heck we want about someone behind their back. unless its a threat. a really nasty threat.
(179) Yes, that’s going a bit far. I don’t agree with many things Bush has done but I doubt very much he would ever do something like that.
Did anyone else hear about the stupid bil they’re trying to pass? About internet rights and stuff? It makes me so mad…
I think that bush is a bad president hawever, however, I agree with 183.
Free speech is good. I could say whatever i wat and no one can complain.
New Topic- who wants to run for president ( assumeing that they were eligeble)
just one more thing on the bush topic:
Bush is EVIL!! How can you not see this??? He led america into a war on the basis of weapons that never existed, Halliburton (Dick Cheney connection) got the rebuilding contracts and thy seized all the oil! The soldiers had inadequate body armor and millions were killed just to sate the administrations greed! Satire and jokes aside, look at the enormity of what they’ve done!! Don’t try to minimize what they’ve done just to not sound extreme!! That’s what the democrats (who are total wimps) did, and look at them!!!
also, look at the current situations with Iran and North Korea. Iran has nuclear capacity, bu so far no weapons whatsover. Bush is determined to “take care of” Iran. North Korea openly has a massive muclear arsenal and a madman willing to use them. SO why isn’t Kim shaking in his boots? Easy. There is no oil in North Korea.
But why would N Korea want to bomb the US? We know Iran hates our guts and so does almost all the rest of the middle east, and personally, radical islamist terrorists have a much larger support base that crazy koreans. Anyway, no matter what the president says, it’s not our job to invade countries. WMDs, spreading democracy, and other excuses aside. The UN should be dealing with this.
N Korea is willing to bomb almost anyone, not just the us specifically. and the UN can’t deal with this stuff because the US is always threatening to veto everything! get this: the US did what they could to keep the war between israel and lebanon going because ISRAEL PURCHASES ARMS FROM THE US!!!!
What evidence is there that the US did anything to keep the war between Isreal and HEZBOLLAH going. HEZBOLLAH is a terrorist group that cannot be controlled by the Lebanese government. And since when does the us make anything? Believe me, I have family in Isreal and I’m telling you for a fact, there is nothing anyone can do to reason with terrorists and nothing the US can say to make them hate Isreal anymore than they already do. The US has always supported Isreal, and there is no shortage of need for weapons over there, they’re never not fighting!
I agree with you on Hezbollah, but the US kept threatening to veto UN decisions to make the Israeli government ceasefire. Not necessarily because Israel is currently buying arms, but because they are also in general a big US customer. That’s all it is for the states, war for profit.
183- yea, I like free speech. I don’t think it’s completely free, but it’s close.
Does anyone else have military recruiters in their school? What do you think of them? What do you think of the idea of having them there?
There is not threat in vetoing a ceasefire decision. Hezbollah is not going to stop because the UN tells them to! Thats like saying, ok, terrorists, you stop bombing us and we’ll stop hunting you down. NOT gonna work. Besides, they tried ceasefire, and it didn’t work. What can Isreal buy from the US thats so important? It’s the size of new jersey for gods sake! Even though Isreal may have one of the best militaries in the world, It just doesn’t have the space to store a whole ton of backup supplies and is far from running out. If they want to reduce the buget deficit, they have to raise taxes. We had a surplus, then bush ran on the lower taxes ticket, and now we have a deficit. And a war. Any correlation? Its horrible to say that anyone would kill thousands for money. I was in isreal just a few months before the attacks. I went to haifa. Toured the Bahai gardens. Its really hard for me to think that something so beautiful is just gone. And tons of innocent lebonese citizens have been killed. But Bush says that it’s our mission to spread democracy. Well lebanon is one of the most democratic middle eastern countries and I’m pretty sure any US support for blowing it up sets a bad example. Not to mention all the americans in isreal and lebanon. I can’t believe, that even with all bush has done, that he would do anything to stop peace negotiations in the middle east. Pretty much all the people who hate Isreal hate us too, and if Isreal can negotiate with them then maybe we can too.
I’m very glad that we have free speech. That way, we can say nassssssssssty things about Bush without going to jail. I mean, look at other countries ruled by dictators – people say one bad thing about the ruler, they go straight to jail. But here, we can say “[blocks out profanity]” at the top of our lungs and the only consequence is that people will probably stare, or at least glance!
FS, I bet you’re very glad that we have this right.
187 – I’m not denying that there is corruption in the government, because there definitely is. However, I don’t know if corruption is enough of a basis to call our president ‘evil.’ There are corrupt politicians everywhere, are they all evil? & I even agree that the was in Iraq was begun under fishy circumstances, but I still think (and thought) that something needed to be done there. Sadam Hussein needed to be taken out of power. I may not agree with the way it was done, or even the time it happened, something needed to be done. So, in short, I’m not disagreeing with your opinions so much as I’m mildly offended by the way you phrase them. Please keep in mind that throwing your views around and criticizing people for not agreeing with them might not be the best way to go about things.
193 – yes, the military regularly has a table in our lunchroom and they often give away keychains or pencils. However, most of the kids in my school will graduate with a good GPA and just about all of them will attend college, so the military generally doesn’t have much success with us. However in other schools in the city, mostly in the poorer neighborhoods, I understand that the recruitment techniques are really different. The students are called frequently reminding them that the military is a ‘good’ option for them and other things like that. I’m a little disgusted at how the armed services take advantage of those kids. Not all of them will get the chance to go to college, so I feel like the military is exploiting that. Don’t get me wrong, I proudly support our troops overseas and I really respect people who voluntarily join the army or navy, but I think that recruiters have no place at schools. Most times when the recruiters are there, there’s also a table next to them by the neighborhood Peace and Justice organization, which kind of balances it. Anyway, that’s my pacifistic 2c.
(187)
“That’s what the democrats (who are total wimps) did, and look at them!!!”
I find it hard to take you seriously when you say something like that. mostly because it has no real value. This is an opinion of mine, not meant to offend.
I still don’t think Bush is evil. People use that word too freely these days. Mostly I think he’s looking for the quick solution in a world that needs more than a Band-Aid, if y’all know what I mean.
see, the thing is, the idea of free speech is really good. everybody gets their opinions heard! yay! except people abuse it by doing things like yelling “fire” in a movie theatre, or randomly insulting people. and you can’t exactly have selective free speech.
196- Did Saddam Hussien need to be taken out of power? He had a bad rep but the Iraqi citizens werent being killed/raped dailly in their villages under his riegn just before the Bush administration.
Yes, he was a corrupt leader and tons of Iraqis were deathly poor but is life for them any different now? Also there are tons of bad leaders all over the world, we arent attcking their countries (but then again they dont have oil…sry that comment might have been alittle unfair).
I think we could have left Iraq alone and be pretty much loved by the world…(1) eveyone would be sympathetic about 9-11 (2) the middle east wouldn’t completely hate our guts (3) Iraqis civilians wouldnt be living/ dying in a war zone with no imediate prospect for peace.
Yay! 200th post! (I think)
Sorry. Not really on topic. Just VVV hyper.
199 – Yes, I think Sadam Hussein did need to be taken out of power. I do think that the US was wrong to rush in there, but I believed that some serious plan of action needed to be put forward. Ideally, I think the US should have waited for UN support and worked on the Iraq problem as a group, preferably peacefully. I am against all wars and this one is no exception, but I think that Sadam Hussain was dangerous in power and needed to be taken care of. It was none of our business to go in there as a single country, but if we had taken part in a UN plan, I think that would have been the best of both worlds.
200 – no random comments in the Hot Topics thread, please.
Free speech–
It Isn’t unlimited. THe limits are Slander, deliberate agitation, etc.
And as much as I may dissagree with some opinions, I will defend the right to express them.
180-But not all smart people are liberals (I like to think of myself as smart, and I’m not liberal.), and not all liberals are smart…no offense to anyone.
‘Course, I’m not a Bush-lover, either, just for the record.
Honestly, “extremes” of either party tick me off with their close mindedness. -__-
(re 244 on random thread) emogirl, if I may add to your comments — sometimes, too, people cut to remind themselves they are real and can actually feel something, anything, even to scare themselves into recognizing the seriousness of their circumstances. Physical pain seems so clean and honest compared to the Bleak Void. In a specific sense, we do try to get attention, but from ourselves.
You’re brave to try to educate others. Even during my worst times, I kept everything hidden from everyone, including my best friends. Depression scares people. They’re afraid it’s contagious, for one thing. Thus they make jokes, belittle the situation, deride it as melodrama. (Or else they make too much of it, which is almost worse.)
They’re likely not trying to hurt you as much as they’re trying to protect themselves. So, difficult as it may be, try to have a little compassion for their ignorance. (Though, yeah, I know, the “shut up and be happy” crowd can try one’s patience to the brink. I’d think, well, I’d slap him/her across the face if I weren’t too depressed to move. Pies might be a better solution.)
There was a time I told myself that having wished for death I no longer feared it. That was pure bravado, of course, but half believing it helped me scrape along until I found more trustworthy resources. Today I would say surviving depression has — in spite of everything — deepened my sense of awe for life. I feel something like those astronauts who look back at Earth for the first time, seeing it so tiny and fragile and beautiful.
I never said that he was evil because he was corrupt, i said he was evil AND corrupt. And he did cause the death of millions for money. He went AWOL from the national guard and while running for reelection, tried to minimize kerrys purple hearts. America is has only recently begun to see this (the New York Times- one of the most fair and balanced periodicals) only very recently started criticizing the administration. Europeans have been pissed off at him ever since he “won” the 2000 election! Maybe Bush really isn’t evil and just a jerk, but Cheney definitely is. Under the Bush I admin Rumsfeld and Cheney were considered psychos (testimony of a man who worked with Bush I) and radicals and no one wanted anything to do with him.
and the democrats are wimps! They need to get off their lazy behinds and become active!!! They supported Bush’s war resolution because… THEY DIDN’T WANT TO APPEAR WEAK! that is… insane! Think of the enormity of what the bushies have done, satire aside. Rigged election, 9/11 not properly handled, lied to the americans to go to war with no reason other than oil, secret torture prisons, violating the geneva convention, inhuman conditions for the prisoners in Guantanamo Bay, inadequate body armour for the soldiers, Katrina: neglected survivors, ignored warnings, and just being monumental jerks in general.
phew… rant over. I could go on and on though…
206-Wow…..that was….extremely enlightening……*slow, solemn applause*. I feel……well, there are no words to describe what I feel right now, but I can say that you have just put the idea of depression in a very different light from the one in which I use to see it……and I see it much better now…..thank you.
208-No kidding.
(206) I understand that completely. I’ve felt similar in my life, you really articulated that well.
207-WOW- I wish everyone thought that way
201-put that way i see your point, if we had of waited for the UN to help we might have a very different and much more managable situation (plus the iraqis would be happier)!
#206: …I definitely agree w/ that! It probably is best to ignore ppl who make jokes about depression…but honestly…could these ppl sink any lower? I literally can’t see how they think these jokes are amusing. Ppl who try to turn their depression into a bunch of drama for those around them…It seems like I’ve had to deal w/ so many of them, LOL (Don’t you miss high skool? JK). But I guess keeping it bottled up inside isn’t any better than making a display of it. During sophmore year, I think I hit a peak depression-wise, but I refused to say anything to anyone…And it didn’t help me the least bit – It just escalated until my parents finally found out exactly how depressed I was, and they made me go to a doctor. He didn’t exactly help me, so I only saw him two or three times. And…I guess I just started taking better care of myself after that, started meditating more, etc…Well, things aren’t exactly great now, but I hav a feeling they might get better.
Depression is a serious issue and so is cutting. But I know people who cut themselves and pretend to be depressed just to be part of the emo fashion that is currently in vogue. I think that it degrades a serious illness and problem by calling it ’emo’ and making a fashion out of it. If you really suffer depression, emogrl, I would have more respect if you wouldn’t go all emo. Sorry, nothing against you personally, but I really find it disgusting to glorify an illness and masochistic impulses. The other day I met my cousin (whom as i recently said has ‘gone emo’), and he told me: “Dude, check out my scars! I made ’em cutting myself with a pair of scissors during art class! aren’t they awesome?”. I wanted to slap him across the face for being such a moronic jerk.
I’m really sorry if I offended you in any way, I didn’t understand the entire situation. Please, accept my apologies.
Hey, any opinions on the (for lack of better words) “torture bill thats currently being stalled in the senate…
Hi Robert.
I have a question to ask you, on behalf of one of my favorite
people, or rather, animals. That animal being Koko the talking gorilla.
As everyone knows, Koko is extremely good at American Sign Language, and knows over 1000 signs.
It occured to me, that it might be interesting if Koko’s caretakers attempted to teach her signing in a different language.
Question: As one of the masters of questions and answers, could you reccomend any books with detailed descriptions
(including pictures) of how to sign in another language.
NOTE: I think it should be whatever foreign langauge is easiest
to master.
PS: If you can’t answer this right away, due to the absense of Rosanne, I’ll understand. I do hope to hear from you though.
Thanks.
do all foreign langauages have signs?
I wonder how history books will potray this war?
218-I’ve thought about that before, but no matter what people really think happened on 9-11, or what people think about the war in Iraq, It won’t be real for our kids. Like with Vietnam and other things our parents went through, it’s only words in boring history books for us, it doesn’t really matter the same way things matter when you live them.
Bush isnt evil. he doesnt try to hurt people or america.
conservatives can be smart.
just look at bill o’riely…
mostly, educated people who arent uber rich, are liberal.
mostly.
220) *claps loudly* But wait, I am educated and so are my parents, and we are very conservative. But that may be because we all grew up in conservative states…… Hmmmm….
And we are not uber rich.
Though I wish we were, because if I was, I would have a big glass dome on top of our house, so I could watch the sunset and the starts and the sunrise and the clouds and the rain and the snow and the…… I could go on and on. And there would be a little door in it, so I could walk outside onto the roof of the house, which part of would be a big concrete slab without any annoying rails to get in the way of the sunset. And there would be another dome on the roof that was like a greenhouse. Aaah, that’s what I would have……
220: oh no, he doesn’t try to hurt people. He just declares war for false reasons and bombs innocent people. [/satire]
222- my brother has a great comic strip hanging up in his room, and I forget who drew it, but it basically shows Bush standing in front of the white house, reading a newspaper, holding up pictures, etc and talking:
“I am pro-life. (next panel). My administrationi is pro-life. (next panel) I want to appoint pro-life judges. (next panel). I want a pro-life foreign policy. (next panel). Now, if you’ll excuse me.. (next panel) I’ve got a war to start.”
Ward Sutton draws some hilarious comics.
223-i think i’ve seen that. that’s a good one
222-meh.
he thinks tahts a good thing to do.
221-just for clarifacation, i think bill o’riely is evil
Mostly, unless they’re conservative because they grew up in a conservative state, if they’re sane, they’re liberal.
but of course.
Look you guys, evil is a pretty strong word. have i already said this? anways, even though i agree with everybody who says bush is a bad president, that doesn’t make him an evil person. Even if he was corrupt and doesn’t care about anuthing but money and power (which is not out of the question), does that really make him evil? no.
Bush isn’t evil. He just has a really weird set of priorities. With which the majority of the world doesn’t agree. Thankyouverymuch.
Meh, why are people making a fasion out of cutting, anyway. It’s not even a bleeding subculture thing. It’s full blown, just turn on a radio or MTV. I think it’s rather offensive to those who are actually depressed. It’s like, read a psychology book, people. They say that people who are actually depressed probably won’t be very open about it. Go figure. <sarcasm> And sign my scars while you’re at it! </sarcasm> Just to clarify, I don’t have any scars. I just feel really bad for the people who do but aren’t scene about it. Like an acquaintence [I destroyed that word, spelling-wise…] of mine has a serious sort of depression, but she doesn’t wear loads of tight black stuff or [at least that I know] cut.
Really random: I just impuslively joined the school newspaper. I must be stark raving mad. It cuts into Chem class!
230 (cutting topic): I completely agree. Making a fashion out of depression is bad, and a big reason for my general dislike for emos.
230&31-ummm i know nothing whatsoever about this. and i even like black metal! maybe its th only fad in the universe ever to escape coming to new york…..lol
#230: My theory is that they (The ppl who cut + show it off, scenesters, wvr you want to call them) are simply desperate for attention…maybe b/c they nvr get any…or then again, their lives could be so normal/happy that they don’t know what sadness/depression feels like, and they’re getting curious…Tch. How low can you go…
LOL, I was writing in calligraphy on my arm today…Yeah, I did get a few odd looks from other ppl – ^_^…Oh come on, it turned out pretty neat! My friend knows how to do reely good sharpie tattoos, and I just figured out how to do…calligraphy/poetry (sharpie) tattoos (LOL, You know you want one…)…OK, what was my point here? Oh yeah, I was just going to say that…If anyone here has a friend who cuts (And I mean has a SERIOUS problem w/ it)…I’ve heard a good anti-cutting exercise is drawing on yourself. Who knew?
233: All emos i know who cut themselves aren’t desperate for attention, they’re all popular pricks and absolute jerks. They cut themselves because it’s stylish to, and it’s stylish to be emo. Btw, emo originally wasn’t what it is now. It actually stands for Emotionally charged hardcore punk, and since it’s physically imposiible for anyone to be an emotionally charged hardcore punk, calling people ’emo’ today is pretty senseless. But for the sake of the argument let’s just continue to call them ’emo’. Anyway, it’s what I don’t like about the whole emo scene: inciting self-harm and glorifiying it, while degrading an actual serious illness.
I finally got around to reading the Time 100, and i think it’s really cool that the king of bhutan thinks countries shoulddd be measured by gross national hapiness. anybody agree/disagree/have some sort of opinion?
What is evil?
This is the Wikipeia deffinishion
In religion and ethics, evil refers to the “bad” aspects of the behaviour and reasoning of human beings —those which are deliberately void of conscience, and show a wanton desire for destruction. Evil is sometimes defined as the absence of a good which could and should be present; the absence of which is a void in what should be. In most cultures, the word is used to describe acts, thoughts, and ideas which are thought to (either directly or causally) bring about affliction and death —the opposite of goodness, which itself refers to aspects which are life-affirming, peaceful, and constructive. Aspects regarded as “evil” are thought of as immoral, corrupt, corrupting, inhumane, selfish, and wicked.
Thank you
Therefore bush is good and evil
no, he is evil.
232: BM has nothing to do swith suicide or masochism. It has to do with Satan and doom, but it doesn’t tell people to cut themselves. Black and death metal are infinitely better styles than emo.
239- This kid at my brother’s college disappeared, and since my brother was a friend of his, he’s been being interviewed by the cops and everything, and one of the inspectors asked him if the kid listened to metal, I guess because he equated that with suicide.. So my poor brother had to explain genres of music to this 50-year-old policeman..
people are stupid. Anything bad happens, they blame it on metal. We’re a scapegoat for a society that doesn’t understand bollocks. What happens is this: A kid is disturbed, has problems, and therefore is ostracized from society. He turns to metal, as it is also an ostracized music. If the kid gos and kills someone, it’s not the fact that he was disturbed, or that he did drugs, or that his parents were alcoholics; not, it’s because of metal. Jesus, it’s horrible.
238- I agree
a topic which is mildly in some vauge way related to emoness, I read this article about a jain who had a terminal illness so she starved herself to death, which an acceptable practice in jainism not comparable to suicide, but the indian government is thinking about outlawing it because they think it IS like suicide…. any thoughts?
#243: Uh…I guess I believe that a person should hav complete control over their own life…including whether they want to end it or not. :S
Right, I know a lot of ppl hav probably asked this already, but I’m asking it for a friend. What role do you think women hav in today’s society, and should this role be changed at all?
By the way, I don’t like coming here. I try to stay away from this thread, except if there is a topic being discussed that I am very, very passionate for. Whenever I actually do come here, I always get pulled into an argument w/ ppl who I would nvr dream of arguing with. I hate arguing. I hate it. I hate it. I HATE IT!!
What I don’t understand is why some ppl like to do it for fun…
GAPAs, could we hav a new polling thread in the near future?!
Women in todays society are unfortunately still subject to macho-istic stereotypes.
244-arguing(or debating) is fun, because you see other people’s opinions, and atempt ot convince them that they are wrong. or someone else. i find that fun. arguing where people hate each other isnt so great.
Gapas- can we please have a new hot topics thread so we can continue our debate on the october issue thread without having to scroll down past 246 old messages? Thanks.
