Boston/Cambridge Kokonvention, March 13, 2010

It starts at 11:30 a.m. blog time (12:30 Boston time). No doubt the Kokonventioneers will find a way to report in during the proceedings; in any case, we’re sure to hear from them eventually.

In honor of this momentous event, here’s a reprise of the song Robert wrote for last year’s Southern California Kokon (to the tune of the Beatles’ “Ballad of John and Yoko”):

Headin’ to the big KokonVENtion,
Musers from all over the place.
The man with the pie
Said*, “I won’t ask you why
You’ve got Pantone 219** on your face.”
Cake, you know it ain’t easy.
You know how wild it can be.
The way things are goin’
They’re gonna bunnify me.

No one looks the way I imagined.
Everybody’s friendly but shy.
They’re funny and nice
But we can’t break the ice
Until someone calls out, “Let’s have some pie!”
Cake, …

Can’t believe we’re all here together,
All those kids I met on the threads.
The man with the pie
Said, “You’re throwing too high.
See, the crust is going over their heads.”
Cake, …

Musers always make an impression.
People all pretend not to see.
The folks in the crowd
Said, “They’re laughing too loud,
And they don’t look ‘mostly harmless’ to me!”
Cake, you know it ain’t easy.
You know how wild it can be.
The way things are goin’
They’re gonna bunnify me.

*[TMFASudoRandom thinks “says” would make more sense here than “said.” We like the disorienting effect of the mismatched tenses, but if it bothers you, you have permission to sing the song whichever way you prefer.]
**[Pantone 219 is an industrial code for a shade of fuchsia very close to hot pink.]

Posting from Beetles iPod at the Boston/Cambridge kokon

Beetles:Wow. I had no idea what these people looked like. This is AWESOME!!!!!!

    Ambystoma Maculatum: This is great.

Enceladus: This is indescribably flamablamablous. I can’t believe this is happening. But it is. !

SudoRandom: Robert- we did run into some bunnies. Silver Lining brought them. We’ll send in some pics. Also, we got a letter from the Beauticious Kate that had a picture of me in my dress and hat. It is flammy.

Keiffer: “Its a thingy! A fiendish thingy!!”

Silver Lining: Wow there are mysterious symbols on the ceiling! And if you stand on the large eyeball you might get transported into The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy. But we didn’t. Boohoo.

    Pseudonym: To craunch the marmoset.

Atantsyal. Awesome , gtg though :(

Princess_Magnolia: Go to the window. Beatlemaniacs abound. Enc looks like Julian  I brought a towel! The voice in the crowd says they’re laughing singing too loud and they don’t look mostly harmless to me…

Hello. I am in the car coming home from the Kokon. I had sooooooooo much fun! We ate at a Chinese restaraunt and everyone was laughing and talking and singing way too loudly. (How many times did we randomly break into song, again?) And then I took out the marshmallow peeps, the pink bunny kind, and we all figured out a way to destroy them. (Sudo ate one covered in soy sauce!) Next we went to the museum and it was interesting there. Lots of hypnotizing chair-building machines. We left lots of Muserly messages in the guestbook. And then we all just starting goofing off and taking pictures and fighting over Magnolia’s towel. What an exceptionally lovely day.

Haha! I am back from the kokon! It was AMAZING and guess what? Enceladus looked almost exactly how I imagined him, but his face was a bit rounder, and his hair was a teensy bit shorter. Oh well. That’s why they have photoshop.
Also, at the museum, everyone locked me in a closet. That’s the second time that’s happened to me.

  16. Enceladus says:

I’m home! The Kokon was indeed amazing. We killed lots of the bunnies. One of them, we put a stake through it, drowned it, and then covered it in soysauce and sweet and sour sauce. It was delicious. We also staked one through the heart. (You should like that, Speller.)

People looked almost nothing like I imagined. I guess the closest would be Silver Lining. Finding each other was pretty easy too. Everyone was seated at a big table.

Once we were in the museum, it was so fun. Near the end, Pseudonym, Beetles, Keiffer and I did an Abby Road parody. I was Lennon, Keiffer was Ringo, Pseudonym was Paul (She did remove her shoes and walk with the other foot forward), and Beetles was George. We of course, also did Muses in front of faces photos. And Kokopelli-hand photos. And photographs of the staked bunnies. It was soooooo amazing! *hopes another Kokon will happen soon*

AlpacaLips makes a bad pun, I say it isn’t funny… we start singing. “But that joke isn’t funny anymore, it’s too close to home and it’s too near the bone…”

My mom wants us to throw the trash away. “Throw it away, throw it away, throw it away now.” and variations of such (give it away, etc).

  22. Keiffer says:

Okay, I just got back from the Kokon, and I am tired.

It was spectacular, really it was. What with the bursting into song, the fighting over Magnolia’s towel, the playing with the viking hat horns, the Abby Road parody, and totally bunnifying the museum, it was quite a spectacular sight.

Restaurant: I wish my mom would have let me get the roasted bitter melon, but that was the only unfortunate thing. (That happened to us, at least.) The bunnies were drowned, impaled, staked, covered in soy sauce and sweet and sour sauce, and eaten. We sang so loudly, that every head turned to stare. (Which is totally normal in most of our cases.) Uh, Pseudonym and I fought over pointless things, as usual, and we met other MBers. Muses. Princess_Magnolia kicked her bag over, and I found a random calculator. Oh yeah, and we distributed contact information.

Walk to museum: It was raining, duh. People kicked puddles, and we talked about random things. Then we found these square pole things in the ground and jumped on top of them and had the parental units take pictures. After that, we j-walked across the street to the entrance of the museum.

In Museum: Took off coats. Dug out cameras. Then came the muse in front of faces and the Kokopelli sign pictures. We browsed around the first floor, and then tramped loudly up the stairs to the second floor. where more peep HPBs came into being mysteriously from Enceladus’ bag o’ muse. We walked around for a little bit until we come across this computer that supposedly answers questions. We asked it, What is the answer to life, the universe, and everything? It said, thankfully, forty-two. But then we asked it, Who is the best Beatle? It did not know the answer. And when we asked it who the surprised kitten was, it said the same thing. Although, when we asked it who George Harrison was, it gave a really, really long answer.

Later, we we in a room that had a bunch of weird machines and stuff in it, and Enceladus, AM, and I, had a hard time trying to find a good spot to hide a url for MuseBlog. We finally decided on a spot that you’d have to look to find, and it wasn’t inside a work of art, so the security people wouldn’t get “aggravated” at us. We tested the rest of the Kokonventioneers, and Silver Lining was the only one who was able to find it. Sudo and Silver Lining were then arguing about who was a better Muser because Sudo had come on MB before Silver Lining, but Silver Lining had found the URL.

Then we circled back to another room and came across a hot pink screen with holes in it, where the peep HPBs appeared again, and Enceladus and AM held them up against the screen, where more pictures were taken. Then the HPBs bunnified Enc’s face, and more pictures were taken. (His face mysteriously became Enc-ified again.)

And because I can’t really remember what happened right after that, I’ll skip to the part about the bathrooms.

Bathrooms: So, the semi-aquatic girl-oids ventured into the horribly intimidating girl bathroom, which turned out to be an anteroom. It had a sofa, and a huge painting.
Then all of us ventured into the boys bathroom, which turned out to be…. *holds for suspense* …. a hallway! The we talked about how unfair it was that the girls had an anteroom.

Down the hall: We sat around and made post 11 because Beetles got WiFi on his iPod. Then AM had to leave for something.
After that we made the Abby Road parody, which was already explained by Enc. (Post 16)

Then the parental units made us leave.

Down in lobby: We got our coats on, and split into the “car group” ad the “subway group”
Subway Group: Me, Enceladus, Beetles, SudoRandom, Atan’tsyal and the parental units.
    Car Group: Everyone else.

Okay. Sorry about the long post.

Like I said, unfortunately probably not me either. :( My parents are pretty strict, so I don’t know if I would be able to get permission from them. To be perfectly honest, I’m not even sure how I feel about it, either. Don’t worry – this is nothing personal, but even though I’m sure you guys are all great people, I don’t really feel comfortable meeting someone I only know of from online. I do feel like I can trust you, and the idea of Kokonventioning is something that I think would be very exciting and I definitely want to do, but it never hurts to be careful. It’s a bummer that this whole “safety paranoid’ thing has to get in the way, but unfortunately neither my parents nor I can make it go away.

That being said, I would definitely be willing to talk to my parents and think about what they say. I do think it’s worth discussing, but I’m afraid by no means can I say that I can commit to it.

        • Your parents would have to do more than just give permission. They would have to be involved, and they would also have to be there. The parents send us their e-mail addresses; we put all of them in touch one another; and then they do the planning. Those are GAPA rules.

Ok, thanks for clearing that up, although I’m pretty sure I was aware of all the GAPA rules already. Never hurts to be reminded, though. If they (or we) agree to go, I’m sure they will insist on going and being involved regardless of any rules anyway.

But yes, I’ll talk with my parents about it. My impulse is to say that they wouldn’t agree, but it’s still worth a talk.
Now that I think about it, it seems like the only MBer that actually couldn’t come to a Kokon was Enceladus, and it seems like… Yes, he appears to have gained permission. It doesn’t seem like most parents have too much of a problem with it.
