Less random than the random thread. More continuity, focus, and attention to spelling, punctuation, and other niceties.

Current topic: Seinfeld Guitars Musical instruments Airsoft Lego Complaints.

  1. I just realized that my post on the random thread was not the first post. And this is not the first post on this thread. GAPAs, feel free to delete both of these posts, as they are extremely pointless. The Popopo is after me!!

    *runs*

    Ha! PoPoPo protection. (PoPoPo Pro):
In 1844, the Democrats were split,
The 3 nominees for the presidential candidate were,
Martin Van Buren, a former president, and an abolitionist,
    James Buchanan, a moderate,
Lewis Cass, a General and expansionist,
From Nashville came a dark horse riding up…
    TMBG!!

  2. Hey GAPAs… I think we should add another rule to what a PoPo is. I think that the PoPoPos should be able to fine Bloggers for posting information simply so that their post is not pointless. They will not be fined as much choklit as they would be, however. Wait. Nevermind. Because then PoPoers could just put “OMGTODAYISTHEBDAYOFSOMERANDOMGUYTHATNOONEBUTHISFAMILYANDFRIENDSKNOWABOUTOMGOMGOMGOMGOMGOMG! Does this count as not a PoPo?” and the won’t be fined as much. Which contradicts the rest of the rule.

1 – If my rule gets passed by other PoPoPos, you will be fined a small amount of virtual choklit!

  6. shanmin, perhaps-I take it you’re a newbie…the PoPoPo is short for the Pointless Post Police. The PoPoPo make sure that no one makes pointless post (such as a couple of yours), and gets away with it. If you must be pointless, either take it to the random thread, or confine it to one post, please. Thank you.
And Seinfeld is only one of the coolest shows ever. Check it.

Kiki the Great-That was only one of the episodes. You should rent one of the seasons, or something. Of course, I’m not sure if your parents would let you watch it…it’s got some kind of mature content.

  7. I have never seen Seinfeld. *runs off to wikipedia*

Here is ze wikipedia summary: “Seinfeld is an Emmy award winning American television sitcom that originally aired on NBC from July 5, 1989, to May 14, 1998. It was one of the most popular television programs of the 1990s, running a total of nine seasons. Many of its catchphrases have entered into the pop culture lexicon.
The series was created by Larry David and Jerry Seinfeld, with the latter starring as an eponymous, fictionalized version of himself. Set predominantly in an apartment block on Manhattan’s Upper West Side, the show features a host of Jerry’s friends and acquaintances, including George Louis Costanza (Jason Alexander), Elaine Marie Benes (Julia Louis-Dreyfus) and Cosmo Kramer (Michael Richards).
Seinfeld was produced by Castle Rock Entertainment then helmed by director-actor-producer Rob Reiner, and distributed by Columbia Pictures Television and Columbia TriStar Television (now Sony Pictures Television). Seinfeld was largely co-written by Larry David and Jerry Seinfeld, with later input from numerous script writers, including Larry Charles, Gregg Kavet, Andy Robin, David Mandel, Jeff Schaffer, Steve Koren, Jennifer Crittenden, Tom Gammill and Max Pross, Alec Berg and Spike Feresten, most of whom had been nominated for best writing awards such as the Emmy.”

    and….

(here is the “overview” of the show):

“While most television sitcoms to date had been mostly family or coworker driven, none of the Seinfeld characters are related by blood or employed by the same organization; in fact, many characters were not employed at all. Like the self-parodying “show within a show” episodes of year four, Seinfeld was perhaps, more than other sitcoms, a “show about nothing.” This is because the episodes’ plots concerned themselves not with huge events or comical situations, but instead focused on the minutiae annoyances and petty discussions of real life, such as waiting in line at the movies, going to eat, buying a suit and so on.

Tom’s Restaurant, a diner at 112th St. and Broadway in Manhattan, referred to as Monk’s Cafe in the show.
In the original concept, the show featured clips of Seinfeld himself delivering a standup routine in a club (in reality, the studio), the theme of which relates to the events depicted in the plot, at the beginning and end of each episode. This device deliberately blurred the distinction between the actor Jerry Seinfeld and the character whom he portrays. After season five, these standup clips became less frequent and were ultimately discontinued after season seven. The show’s main characters were modeled after Seinfeld’s real-life acquaintances. Many of the plot devices too are based on real-life counterparts – such as the Soup Nazi (based on Al Yeganeh), J. Peterman of the J. Peterman catalogue, and New York Yankees owner George Steinbrenner.
In virtually every Seinfeld episode, several story threads are presented at the beginning, involving the characters in separate and unrelated situations. Rapid scene shifts between story lines moves the action forward as rapidly as possible. Despite the separate plot strands, the narratives show “consistent efforts to maintain [the] intimacy” between the small cast of characters. (Gantz 2000)
The show kept a strong sense of continuity – characters and plots from past episodes were frequently referenced or expanded upon. Occasionally, storylines would span multiple episodes and even entire seasons. Larry David, the show’s head writer and executive producer for the first seven seasons, was celebrated for keeping a close eye on minor details and making sure the main characters’ lives remained consistent and believable, and would later make use of season-long story arcs in his next series, Curb Your Enthusiasm.
    [edit]Major characters
Jerome (Jerry) Seinfeld (played by Jerry Seinfeld) – Jerry is the “passive central player” in the show, a figure who is “able to observe the chaos around him but not always be a part of it.” Plot lines involving Jerry often concern his various relationships — Jerry often finds “stupid reasons to break up” with women, something which according to Elaine occurs “every week.”
George Louis Costanza (played by Jason Alexander) – Once succinctly described by Elaine as a “short, stocky, slow-witted, bald man”, George is a neurotic, self-loathing man, dominated by his parents, Frank and Estelle. He has been best friends with Jerry since their middle school years.
Elaine Marie Benes (played by Julia Louis-Dreyfus) – Elaine is frequently a victim of fate. She may get caught up in the machinations of the other characters, or come into conflict with boyfriends or the arbitrary requirements of her eccentric employers. Many episodes end with Elaine ruining something for someone, in the same way she has of sabotaging her own relationships, such as Jerry’s sitcom or the Soup Nazi’s business.
Cosmo Kramer (played by Michael Richards) – Kramer is the archetypal “wacky neighbor” and friend of main character Jerry Seinfeld. He was once described by Elaine as “a tall, lanky doofus with a birdface and hair like the Bride of Frankenstein.” His trademarks include his humorous upright bouffant hairstyle and vintage wardrobe, the combination of which led to his categorization as a ‘hipster doofus’; his energetic bursts through Jerry’s apartment door; his assortment of comic pratfalls; and his penchant for nonsensical, percussive outbursts of noise to indicate skepticism, agreement, or annoyance.
    [edit]Minor characters
There were numerous recurring minor characters in Seinfeld. The most prominent were:
Newman (played by Wayne Knight) — A rotund postal worker who served as an accomplice of Kramer and a nemesis of Jerry, Newman was a neighbor of both and was noted for his excessive eating habits.
Frank Costanza (played by Jerry Stiller) and Estelle Costanza (played by Estelle Harris) — George’s eccentric parents. George credits them with driving him crazy.
Susan Ross (played by Heidi Swedberg) — George’s fiancée. She was previously an NBC executive and she also briefly experimented with lesbianism.
Morty Seinfeld (played by Barney Martin) and Helen Seinfeld (played by Liz Sheridan) — Jerry’s parents. Morty was most famous for stubbornly sticking to his convictions; Helen didn’t understand why anyone wouldn’t like her son Jerry, and perennially believes he is financially strapped. These two characters are thought to be based on Jerry Seinfeld’s parents.
Uncle Leo (played by Len Lesser) — Jerry’s uncle and Helen’s brother. He personified the eccentric old man and frequently belittled Jerry with comparisons to his own purportedly successful son.
David Puddy (played by Patrick Warburton) — Elaine’s on-and-off boyfriend. He was a fine auto mechanic, but was also an airhead with numerous quirks.
    J. Peterman (played by John O’Hurley) — Elaine’s eccentric boss. He owned the J. Peterman haberdashery whose catalog Elaine worked on.
George Steinbrenner (voiced by Larry David)— George’s boss and owner of the New York Yankees. Steinbrenner’s face was never shown. He was notable for his arrogance and being out-of-touch with the actual running of a baseball team.
    [edit]No hugging, no learning
Seinfeld violated several of the conventions of mainstream television. The show, which correctly or not is often described as “about nothing”,[1] became the first television series widely described as postmodern.[2] Several elements of Seinfeld fit in with a postmodern interpretation.
The characters were: “thirty-something singles … with no roots, vague identities, and conscious indifference to morals.” And the usual convention of isolating the characters from the actors playing them, and separating the characters’ world from that of the actors and audience was broken. For example the story arc in which the characters’ are promoting a television sitcom series named Jerry. Jerry was much like Seinfeld in that Seinfeld played himself, and that the show was “about nothing.” Jerry was launched in the 1993 season four finale, in an episode titled “The Pilot.”
On the set this was expressed as the “no hugging, no learning” rule, which held that the characters should not develop or improve throughout the series. In the final episode Jerry and George are only inches away from hugging when they are told that their show was to be aired once again on NBC but they end up not making any contact.
Gantz maintains that another factor in, or further proof of, spectators’ and characters’ participation in a larger Seinfeld community is the large amount of in-slang, “a lexicon of Seinfeldian code words and recurring phrases that go unnoticed by the infrequent or ‘unknowing’ viewer”. Only the cognoscenti would understand the concepts of “double dipping” or “close-talking”, or appreciate the addition of “not that there’s anything wrong with that” by someone trying to take the edge off a politically incorrect remark. When questioned about whether or not he thought Seinfeld could be considered deconstruction, the philosopher Jacques Derrida[3] rejected the claim that a sitcom could be deconstruction. However, this remark is often taken out of context, as he states he has never seen the Seinfeld show.
    [edit]Response
The show premiered as The Seinfeld Chronicles on Thursday, May 31, 1990 on NBC. The show was not an immediate success. After the pilot was shown, on July 5, 1989, a pickup by the NBC network did not seem likely and the show was actually offered to Fox, which declined to pick up the show. However, Rick Ludwin, head of late night and special events for NBC, diverted money from his budget to pay for the filming of the next four episodes.[4]
After nine years on the air and 176 episodes filmed (along with four clip shows), the series finale of Seinfeld aired on May 14, 1998. It was watched by a huge audience, estimated at 76 million viewers. Jerry Seinfeld holds both the record for the “most money refused” according to the Guinness Book of World Records by refusing an offer to continue the show for $5 million per episode, and another record for the Highest Ever Annual Earnings For A TV Actor,[5] while the show itself held the record for the Highest Television Advertising Rates up until 2004, when the final episode of Friends aired.[6]
In 2004 a deal was negotiated to make Seinfeld available on DVD for the first time. Due to legal problems with the cast involving episode commentary and other DVD extras, the release was pushed back. The first three seasons were released November 23, 2004, and Season 4 was released on May 17, 2005. Season 5 and Season 6 were released on November 22, 2005. Season 7 was released in the U.S on November 21, 2006. The release date(s) for the final two seasons are unknown, but a May 2007 release appears to be most likely.[citation needed]
The show topped TV Guide’s list of the top 50 greatest shows of all time[7] in 2002, and was so influential in the ’90s popular culture, it came in first in E!’s 2004 countdown of 101 Reasons the ’90s Ruled. For its impact, the show won countless awards throughout the decade, including winning 10 Emmy Awards and being nominated in every year of its run.
According to Bruce Fretts’ 1993 The “Entertainment Weekly” “Seinfeld” Companion, Seinfeld’s audience was, “TV-literate, demographically desirable urbanites, for the most part – who look forward to each weekly episode in the Life of Jerry with a baby-boomer generation’s self-involved eagerness.””

  19. Other TV shows that I watched once that AREN’T Seinfeld but are/ can be funny:

Boston Legal (currently on, third season) Insane lawyers.
The West Wing (seven seasons, just canceled last year) Not always funny, but there are some quotes I use on a weekly basis.
Doctor Who (newest series still on, third season US begins soon, fourth season Britian, old series not bad I’ve heard but haven’t seen) Bananas are a good source of potassium! Captain Jack pwns.
Monty Python’s Flying Circus (on PBS in my area, not sure how many seasons, old, like everyone has the DVDs though) Do you really need to ask?

    How many people recognized those?

I don’t know much about Seinfeld. Something about there once was an episode just waiting for a table at a restaraunt, and the phrase soup nazi, and other random trivia, but I’ve never seen it.

“And you want to be my latex salesman?”

My favourites are: The Marina Biologist, The Opposite, The Chinese Restaurant (even though Kramer isn’t in it– *sob*), The Junior Mint, The Outing…They are all SO good.
But The Opera freaks the CRAP out of me. I have nightmares about Crazy Joe Davola.

    “I am lactose intolerant.”
    “Really?”
“I have no patience for lactose and I won’t stand for it.”

  23. 29- Boston Legal is very good, though extremely unrealistic. So is Doctor Who, though I don’t watch that as often. My favorite show is probably House, on fox. I know, I know, it’s mainstream. But with Hugh Laurie (who just one both a golden globe and a sag award for best actor in a drama) playing the main charachter and the amazing scripts, it’s definitely worth it. My mum has a pre-mid-’60s Gibson. I am in LOVE with that guitar! It is huge, cruel on your fingers and hard to hold, but it is by far my favourite guitar I’ve ever played! She also has a couple of Martins, which are also kinda fun. I started out on the bigger one, with nylon strings. Its funny…I’ve actually been playing for about a year and a half, but about a month ago I began to get REAL blisters on my fingers. That Gibson really breaks in your fingers and cleans up your chords. I was so used to the nylon-stringed Martin and my electric (which are too nice), but this Gibson has skin coming off of my fingertips. Its love. :D
I really want a Flying V. SO BAD. I’m not kidding.

  44. 51: Crank out some simple 1-4-5 riffs with power chords, or 1-2-3 major riffs, then play lead over it. And I reccomend you sell the squire and get something bit sweeter (if you’re serious about guitar) like an Ibanez or a Fender. Don’t get a Gibson where you can get an Epiphone; Epiphone have narrowed the art of copying Gibsons to the point where the average Gbiso plays like the average Epihpne. but   i mean take the sadness at lamuth’s leaving (and lamuth was brilliant…that was so sad) and multiply it by like 10 for schneids. Band is going to suck next year. idk who’s replacing him, but it’s going to suck anyway. and it was going to suck anyway, since we’re losing harriman and billy and basically everybody who knows anything and now schneids too.

and i mean, he’s schneids. i went up to monica and told her after band, and she was like “I know! it’s so sad! i miss him already! and i’m not even in band!”

    anyway…*snibble*

i did break the shift key. durn. it feels weird using the one on the left…

  57. 76: I totally agree, but just expand Hendrix to all guitarists from the sixties to the late 80s. Looking at the technique, Hendrix really isn’t up there. Look at some of the guitarists I mentioned before, you can see videos of them on youtube. Brilliant.

    Pie 0
    Squid 0
  58. 75 & 76:
Jimi Hendrix was self taught. He had his own technique, and his own type of music that he pioneered and that was previously unheard-of. And he was good at it. Most guitarists use many notes in quick succession to express thier feelings into a song. Hendrix did the same thing with fewer notes and just as much feeling.

  61. 83 I tried taking piano lessons once, but the teacher didn’t even teach me anything, so after a year, I quit. Seriosly, it took me a year to recognize “D” and like, a day in school to learn a whole scale.
In school I play a violin, which is obvios(sp?) if you look at my name. Violins are undoubtedly the best instrment ever, :) but if I was in band I would play the trumpet or clarinet because those are cool too.

  64. (87) Cool! Tuba is indeed froody.

Bass clarinet really is an excellent instrument to play though. It’s fun because it’s low, which means you get to play really deep notes and feel all the vibrations in your tongue, which sounds strange but is actually quite pleasant. And it’s a woodwind, but a low woodwind, so almost an honorary brass instrument, because you never play the woodwind part, you usually play the tuba part. Plus everyone always forgets you are there so there’s no pressure if you screw up. :D

  81. This past week, my city had record-cold temperatures (for the city). We missed 2 days of school because the school buses’ gas gells when the temperature is too cold. Also, they don’t want people getting frostbitten. It got down to -5 degrees F (I think that’s about -20 degrees C), and the windchill was down to -20 degrees F (about -29 degrees C).

Our city usually is well prepared for the cold, but we have been having really strange winters lately. A few months ago, it was 70 degrees!

  103. oh, if we were talking about skool valentines… and if we weren’t, I DON’T CARE because i have to say this somewhere…
at our skool, during lunch, you pay fifty cents for a piece of paper on which you write someone’s name and homeroom, and then today they hand out heart suckers to the people. obviously popular people get tons, but for some reason this really weird guy in my homeroom got like ten from a bunch of eighth graders who were making fun of him. and i got some for my friends and such, and they got some for me, but then in homeroom this morning i got another one, the paper said “from your secret admirer (plus something underneath in parantheses that i couldn’t read but it looked like “lighy” or something like that)”
and at first i thought it was this one guy because the double O’s in my teachers homeroom were made into a weird face like he does, but then several people said it wasn’t him
and also it cant be anyone i know very well because they spelled my last name wrong
and they had really messy handwriting that i couldnt recognise
and there’s only one guy i would want it to be, but its not him because i know his handwriting

    so anyway…
i don’t know much about legos, i had some once and they were fun but we don’t use them anymore. i went to the Lego Store in the mall of america once and it was cool, they had this giant sculpture made of legos that looked like a gigantic kid with a working clock made from legos in his stomach… it was cool. he was perfect, right down to the shoelaces.

  107. God, Spider Plant. Just read the last paragraph, it would’ve told you everything – A couple of helpful hints: (1) To write the commands between the colons, leave out the spaces between the words and the colons. We’ve just put them in here to keep the words from turning into faces. (2) Some of the “picture” smileys don’t work at the beginning of a line, so type a space before you write them. They also don’t work if they’re the first characters in a post, so you can start with a “throwaway line” with a hyphen or slash or something on it. Just another of WordPress’s many quirks

  136. 180-

My brother TOTALLY!!!!!!!!!!! Beats you w/ Lego! That is funny.
    Ookay. Here is an example:

Imagine a box. About as large as… 1/3 of a normal sized door. My brother has about five of those, as well and his ENTIRE ROOM literally- I mean LITERALLY FILLED with Legos. Everywhere I step, my feet get poked with legos. All the surfaces in his room besides his bed are covered with legos. I am NOT EXAGGERATING! I mean I am REALLY NOT exaggerating.

  137. I got a postcard from muse! Does this mean my letter didn’t get in? snnniff?

well, anyway, uranina watches me through her telescope, or at least that’s what it said. also that my feet are very photogenic.

GAPAs: please inform the bug (me) what this means?EXPLANATORY!

also, it was lovely-ly written in green colored pencil.

  138. 167 – My class is only fencing foil right now, but I’m taking the next level in two weeks, where we’re allowed to fence Sabre and Eppe (sp?). Anyways, I beat a guy with a lot more experience than I have last Saturday, succesfully pulling off a jumping stab and an RCM, and considering using fleshing once, though not actually doing it. I also (unfortunately) pulled my right thigh muscle in the midst of clumsily triping in the middle of the second attempted RCM. (Oh. joy.) I am now not allowed to do most physical activity, but I STILL WON!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Yeaya!

169 – Come on. The point is that the last time some dumb guy was hitting on me, he was discouraged by his freinds who were saying “hey dude, she fences. better get out of the way.” And it’s a great way to meet cool people. And it’s good excersize. And it seems that there are at least a few fencing Musers, so going to a class increases your chances of meeting one.

180 – i think that FridgidSymphony said that it was originally a Norse holiday.

197 – Wooooooooooaaaaaaahhhhhhhh. Slightly creepy. Actually, it reminds me a lot of my obsession with random knick-knacks (often called junk, but IT IS NOT SO!) They are all over my room, in many of my pockets, and clogging up several drawers. The current inventory of my pocket is: a red pen, a pen, two pencils, a pegasus figurine, a quartz crystal, a necklace that’s actually a small container, a folded peice of paper with my “Things to Do” list on it (written in ancient runes, just cuz they’re so fun to write with), some loose change, a metallic pen, a pen that lights up, my iPod shuffle (old version, very scuffed up), some Valentines Day mints, and a hairclip.
My freinds must think that there’s another world living in just my pocket. They always ask me to borrow a pencil because they know that I’ll have one.

  139. Kagcomix,
Sorry for getting so enraged, but when the honor of LEGO is at stake… What do you mean by ‘storylineish’? Do you mean it’s easier to make a coherent story? SP (Spider Plant) like LEGO, recent and old. For getting older sets or indivindual peices, try [snip. –Admin.], or just look around, Bricklink rocks!

  140. Aha! LEGO! The toys of my childhood. I made a little town off of a town my brother once made there was a pizzaria and a bunch of other things. My brother actually has the airplanes made out of legos. I love legos.

199- On the topic of things in pocket/purse. I never carry anything in my pocket but for about two weeks I kept a ruler in my shoe because I forgot to put it in my purse.

Question did anyone ever get that soccer lego set? I got it and gosh darn it, it was idiotic I also had the skate board set. That was idiotic too.Anyone else who have those sets?

  142. When I was little. my friend and I used to make kitties out of legos. We then gave them TV’s, beds, etc. and played a sort of doll house game with them. Sounds stupid, I know, but we loved it. My brother has way too many bionicles.

  150. 207/208 – My little bro loves playing with Bionicles. I call them Bionic-knuckles because the word wounds like a combination of the two. He must have almost ten or fifteen different kinds, but the pieces alway get mixed up or lost.

Okay, new topic, because the Lego one seems to be dying out pretty quickly and the Cartoon one isn’t catching on. (my parents cancelled cable, so goodbye cartoons.)
    The New Topic Is:

    Complaints,

because everyone has something to complain about and most people want to tell someone about it.

I shall start by complaining that I need to sit next to the same dumb guy in Language Arts and Spanish who I have to be science partners with. He talks to himself all the time, taps or hits things, or randomly mumbles stuff while other peole are having a conversation. And yes, he does these things during tests too (ex. ACT, SAT, MEAP, Final Exam) and since I’m the most “patient, tolerant, kind-hearted” person in the class, I’m supposed to be able to put up with and set a good example for all of the troublemakers or kids with mental problems. And they still ahve the nerve to ask me to dance ata dances and I don’t turn people down because of some “there are some people who go and commit suicide because someone didn’t dance with them” speech I was given in sixth grade.

Okay, I doubt anyone read that, but everyone’s open to complain if we can’t think of another topic that’ll get this thread going again.

  151. School plays. Specificly Middle School Plays.

They are very horrible and the one I’m in is not coming together at all. The cast is forgetting their lines. The crew is doing just fine, though. We are doing “When in Rome” and are first performance is on Friday and we have lost about 3 rehersals due to snow days. And there is more snow due on Saturday.

  152. Not all school plays are horrible.
Although the play directing teachers don’t seem to have any idea what’s actually good. Real examples from my school’s past: I don’t remember sixth grade, so I can’t list that, 7th grade- Football Romeo. For one thing, I am not trying out for anything having anything to do with Romeo&Juliet. Another, I saw it (idle curiosity, and it’s not the actors’ fault), and the title had little to do with the play. Earlier this year- Characters. A confusing play-within-a-play, with depressing moments and an ending I didn’t think made sense. But I went because two of my friends were in it. Now, they’re doing a second play instead of a musical (*cries*). It was going to be Our Town. At the interest meeting, they showed a video of the first part. Snore. And they had a synopsis about how it was one of the great plays, about mortality. I went home and told my parents. Their reaction- “That’s a depressing play. People have commited suicide after seeing Our Town.” Then they changed what it’s going to be, to a play that is part of the sixth grade play-reading curriculum. But I liked Phantom Tollbooth when I read it in elementary school, so it’ll be OK. But I still prefer musicals.

  153. 215 ~ Yeah, the plays at my school have a great director, but the rest doesn’t quite come together. We have a pretty good crew for the most part, and the same goes for the cast, but it’s the parts that aren’t pretty good that cause the problems. Our cast ranges from great to really mediocre, as does the crew, so the parts with the great cast and crew work awesome, but the other parts don’t. If that makes sense.

  157. Ugh, definitely a complaint here:

    Chem homework.

It’s on gas laws and I don’t really understand them (I get the easy ones, it’s things like PV=DRT that I can’t solve) and I can’t tell if I’m getting the right answers or not, and they don’t check. My chem teacher is a 5’9 (I’m 5 feet, she’s tall to me) extremely imposing indian woman, of whom tales of terror float throughout the school. I am so dead.
