Re: AP: My high school's very big (2000+ students) so we have a ton of AP classes… but no Latin or AP Biology (that's why I'm taking it online).

I'm legitimately excited for the fall. AP Chem, AP Euro, Multivariable Calculus… it'll be a party. :D

Here’s your last comment-which I wanted to reply to.
They don’t offer AP Bio; very few people take AP Chem/Physics.
NORMAL SCIENCE CURRICULUM AT MY SCHOOL
      9 – (Honors) Earth/Physical Science
      10 – (Honors) Biology
      11 – (Honors) Chemistry
      12 – (AP) Physics B/C (nobody takes C, though)
      WHAT I AM TAKING
      9 – Honors Biology
10 – Honors Chemistry, CIS* Anatomy Physiology
11 – AP Chemistry, AP Biology
      12 – AP Physics B/C (I’m thinking C at this point)
So basically by the end of high school I’ll be taking science with my grademates, but I’ll have crammed more learning in the previous grades.
      * – In CIS classes you get college credit without an AP test.

We have several tracks, and I’m not taking any of them. The main one is-
      Bio
      Chem
      Physics
or you get Earth/Space science thrown in there.
      Another track-
      Bio H
      Chem H
      Physics H
      Chem/Bio/Physics AP
      I am doing this-
Bio H (Then I’ll take the AP test)
Chem H (Then I’ll take the AP)
      Physics AP
Then maybe some university science, possibly liberal arts or genetics.

AP tests are before the end of the school year. You’ll have to study a LOT of extra material WHILE taking biology and also get ahead on material that you would learn otherwise after the test.

POSOC & Cat’s Eye, regarding sunburn: Most of the time, I live indoors, particularly on hot, sunny days. Michigan does get sun, after all–it’s not Forks. I also use sunscreen when spending a lot of time outside.

I also seem to have gotten a weird genetic combination from my parents so I neither tan nor burn easily.Or so I thought. 7 hours in direct Mediterranean sunlight seems to have done the trick despite the sunscreen, though. Now people keep commentign on the red strip on my face. It’s not peeling, just sensitve, so I guess that’s a good thing.

cromwell, regarding kosher McDonalds: I’m not sure what you mean by kosher McDonalds. There are some in Israel, on the opposite shore of the Dead Sea. The McDonalds I went to had 100% halal signs on the fries, though.

Ebeth, I liked the Netherlands (besides Van Bommel) before the finals. Before they started karate kicking opposing players. Before they set a record, by themselves, for total yellow cards in a final. The Netherlands played well in their first six games, using possession and finesse to overwhelm their opponents. I mean, they beat Brazil! Then, in the finals, they abandoned their style. They replaced possession with long balls to Arjen Robben, and they replaced all their pretty footwork with fouls. The Netherlands became a different team, and the team they became played ugly, dirty soccer.

And as for defending Uruguay, I have more of a reason to hate Uruguay than most. I haven’t “defended” them.

Other World Cup: Thomas Mueller won the Golden Boot on assists (the tiebreaker) because he had three and everyone else had one. FORLAN WON THE GOLDEN BALL AS THE TOURNAMENT’S BEST PLAYER YESSSSSSS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

“In this class, we will be spending time in a place in Japan. It is called Taz! T-A-Z! It is called Jozu, and it is in Japan! It is fictional, but it is not. You can go there, but you can never reach it. It is between Heaven and Earth, and in it there is a golden egg! It is a golden egg of acceptance and art! You must reach this golden egg and claim it for your own! I want you to think of each of these classes as clans. You are in a clan. Each clan is vying for the golden egg. But only one of them will reach it! Your clans are in competition for the golden egg! And so we are going to do egg drops, and you can protect your egg with these popsicle sticks and marshmallows. Good luck!”

      1) Sleep a lot the day before, so you CAN wake up before dawn.
      2) Bundle up, it can get cold if you’re outside in the early morning for a long time.
      3) Wake up as few other people in your house as possible when you go outside to watch.

I’ve had a little experience with a Kindle, but only because my uncle has one and when he stayed with us last year he let me use it a few times. Like axa said, it was very cool, but “coolness” doesn’t really count for much in the long term. Everything I can say about it however was very positive – the screen is good, it’s easy to read, and incredibly convenient overall. The only major difference I can think of is that I’m pretty sure you can buy books online through the Kindle, but you can’t do that on a Nook, which might lower the convenience. (Although I’d have to look that up again, because I might be remembering wrong.) All in all, I think that even though the idea of an ebook in general doesn’t really appeal to me, the convenience of it is really amazing. And based on the time I used the Kindle, it’s pretty much everything it’s drummed up to be.

OK…so ebook readers. If you have an ebook reader, you still have to BUY the ebook, right? And there’s a limited number you can buy, right? So why not just buy a book? It saves you the price of the reader and you can buy any book you want if you look hard enough. And it’s an actual physical book, which has character and can be lent out to people and all that. (Lending people books greatly increases the chances of their actually reading them.) And books rarely break, and even if they do paper biodegrades. An ebook reader is bound to break sooner or later, like all technology, and when it does it’ll just become part of the trash island in the Pacific.
Honestly, I don’t really see the point. Unless I’ve got it wrong, and it just comes with several thousand books, in which case it all makes sense.

Well, as far as possible things go, having a back brace is relatively minor, although I hope you never get stuck having to wear one. My mom has scoliosis, too–more severe than mine–and when she was about 18, she had to have surgery on it, and had a rod put in. A few years back–probably close to 8, now–she had to have another surgery on her spine, since the original rod has shifted. They put a new rod in, and fused most of her spine….

I think my curve is something like 20-25 degrees, I forget exactly. My sis has a smaller one, around 10ish, she’s not had to do anything for hers, other than the very occasional checkup to make sure it’s not gotten worse. Lucky girl. XD

24- Ditto. Plus, if I want to reply to multiple comments, it’s easier to write one big comment than lots of little replies. IMHO.

16.2.1 and replies- I actually HATE electronic textbooks. I had one once. It was awful. It wouldn’t show up on some computers, and it took forever to load, and I couldn’t work on solving problems in the margins, and I could never find the right page. Also, looking at computer screens is really painful after a while. Even if it was a little handheld thing, I would a) not be able to work it or b) put it in my backpack with Jonathan Strange and Mr Norrell and The Complete Works of William Shakespeare and discover later that it had been crushed. I don’t like heavy backpacks, but I like electronics less. After laptops and cell phones, I don’t see the point. iPods are nice, but who needs all this silly extra stuff, like iPhones and iTouches and i-whatever-elses? Of course, it helps that I can’t even work any phone more recent than my early-2000s model. They want to electronify our entire school system. I am adamantly against this. We don’t need more electronics in the world. Eventually they will all break and end up in the North Pacific Gyre, killing seabirds.

16.2.1.2 and replies- I like not having space for books. I mean, I don’t really, and I wish we had more bookshelves, but the stacks of books are cozy. And if I need something to read, there are dozens of books within reach. If they were all electronic, I would have to actually go looking for a book, which is a ridiculous notion. I’ve read a few books online and it is the least enjoyable reading experience I have ever had, however wonderful the books. Ebooks have no character.

I was sitting in the dorm library after finishing my astronomy homework, and I found a novel called “Cyborg IV” on the shelf behind me.

It’s a tie-in to the old TV series The Six Million Dollar Man, and it’s set in the lead-up to the Apollo-Soyuz Test Project*, which happens to be 35 years ago on the 17th.

That would be a weird enough coincidence, except that at one point in the book, one character asks the hero, Steve Austin, how he feels about the Apollo Program being over. He tells her that the astronauts felt the same with every transition before, and that the focus must be on what is to come, rather than what will be no more.

Such a mature way of thinking, and so relevant. Colonel Austin, I salute you.

I’ve been so busy even though it’s summer. I suppose it’s better than being bored out of my mind. So if I don’t post for a while, it’s because I’m busy. “A while” might mean a week, or it might end up meaning a month. I have no clue. Also, my mom has finally decided that she’s going to divorce my dad. I’m really glad, actually, that this is happening because the constant fighting really sucks, and my dad is not someone who is really pleasant to be around. There’s a lot more to the divorce than that, but I just really don’t want to get into it. Sorry for any lapses in grammar. I’m really tired.

Remember we were talking about, overuse of commas? Here’s a really, good example:

One can have a tough time comparing two things, especially, when both of them are fabulous, and confusion is bound to set in when you want to choose one of them. Comparison between Sony PlayStation 3 and Microsoft Xbox 360 is one such task, which is bound to leave you exhausted. Even the most ardent fan of gaming out there will have a tough time guessing which is better, PS3 or Xbox 360. In order to find the answer to this intricate question, one has to take a brief look at each of these products and their salient features as only after doing so, one will be able to know, which is better, xbox 360 or ps3.

    Sony’s PlayStation 3 (PS3)
PlayStation 3 is a seventh generation video game console, launched by Sony Computer Entertainment, as a successor to PlayStation 2. This console offers services like, online gaming, along with a high-definition optical disc format and Blu-ray Disc as storage medium. Since its launch in 2006, PS3 has undergone several changes, which have made gaming even more easier and interesting. Currently, two models of PS3 – the 120 GB Slim and the 250 GB Slim, are available. Some of the most popular PS3 games include Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare, Assassin’s Creed, Prince Of Persia, Devil May Cry 4 etc.

    Microsoft’s Xbox 360
Xbox 360 is the seventh generation video game console, launched by Microsoft, as a successor to its first gaming console – the Xbox. The console features services like Xbox Live, which facilitates online gaming, and also gives the user an option of downloading games and game demos, as well as, TV shows and movies. Since, its launch in 2005, 39 million Xbox 360 consoles have been sold all over the world. At present, this console is available in two configurations – the ‘Arcade’ and the ‘Elite’. Some of the most popular Xbox 360 games are Mass Effect 2, Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2, Assassin’s Creed II and Resident Evil 5.

Which is Better: PS3 or Xbox 360?
In order to decide which is better, Xbox 360 or PS3, we will have to take some of their prominent features into consideration. The Cell engine (microprocessor chip) in PS3 is more capable than Xbox’s triple-core Xenon CPU. But the performance of these video game consoles also depends on the graphics processing unit (GPU) to a great extent. Taking that into consideration, Xbox 360, armed with Xenos GPU is far more superior than PS3 armed with RSX GPU.

The primary storage medium in PS3 is the Blu-ray Disc, with a storing capacity of approximately, 54 gigs, while the storage medium in Microsoft Xbox 360 consists of double layer DVDs, with a storing capacity of 9 gigs. In addition to this, both these gaming consoles also, come with a hard disk drive which enables users to store more games on the console. Storage medium becomes an important factor, due to online game purchasing capabilities of both console manufacturers. Also, more memory ensures that the saved game data does not become a hindrance while downloading games.

PS3 vs Xbox 360 Price Comparison
As the performance of both of these gaming consoles does match to a great extent, price can turn out to be a deciding factor, when it comes to PS3 vs Xbox 360. In case of the Xbox, there are various models that have different price tags. Based on your requirement, you can opt for models that have lower hard disk capacity, and are thus, consequently cheaper. The cheapest is the Xbox 360 Arcade version, priced at USD199.99, and does not feature a HDD. It has 512 MB of on-board memory, which can be used to save game data. The Xbox 360 Elite is a higher end model, which has two variants, priced at USD299.99 and USD399.99. The Elite priced at USD299.99, features a 120 GB HDD, and a single wireless controller, while the more expensive USD 399.99 version of Elite has two wireless controllers, in addition to a 250 GB HDD.

Sony’s PlayStation 3 is also, available in various models and in different price range. The basic model comes with a 120 GB hard drive and is priced approximately, at USD300. The higher end model has a 250 GB hard drive, and comes with various free games, depending on your geographical location. In the United States, this higher end model comes with Tekken 6 free, and is priced approximately, at USD400. Both models come with a blu-ray drive which can be used for multimedia purposes as well.

You may also, like to go through:

    * Game Downloads
    * Game Cheats Codes

To sum up, both the Xbox 360, as well as the PS3 have their own pros and cons. Xbox 360 does have a slight edge, in this case, as price might end up being a major deterrent in terms of the PS3. While it is very difficult to choose which is better, the PS3 or Xbox 360, hardcore gamers will prefer the Xbox 360, while people looking for an all round entertainment device might be happier with the PS3.

    Hello, all!

I’m checking in from my Grandfather’s house in PA. I’ve been at music camp, playing Horn in band and orchestra. It’s been awesome! Everyone there is a geek. It’s (still) awesome!
I’ve managed to regain some brief computer acess, just a few hours before a HUGE concert. I’m playing in two groups, band and orchestra. Here’s the list of songs, mostly in order (With added commentary be me)

    Band-

Praetorious Suite, movements 1,3. (Brilliant piece. Orchestration of Rennaisance dances. We’re playing the Courante and Gavotte (Now, if Arizaphale was here, he could dance to that…) which are wonderful.)

Dusk (Wonderful modern piece. Musical representation of a sunset. LOOK IT UP. NAO.)

Triumphant Fanfare (Leasy interesting piece. It’s fanfare, though trumpets don’t get all the attention. Horns have the melody often. Insanely fast.

Lincolnshire Posy, by Percy Aldrige Grainger, movements 1,2,6. (Brilliant piece. Orchestration of folksongs from England. Beautiful)

    Orchestra-

Unfinished Symphony, No. 8 by Schubert. Movement 1. (Amazing piece. Fast with slow parts. Minor. Now, to make it even better, look it up and imagine a Doctor Who trailer set to it’s music.)

Finlandia (Awesome piece. Finland’s second national anthem. Hard to describe, so look it up.

    And the grand finale-

LORD OF THE RINGS MUSIC SCORE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
(It’s amazing. The horns have the melody at the part at Isengard with the orks and others preparing for battle Dah duh dah! Dom dom dom. In Dreams is beautiful. As is the theme. We’re essentiall playing almost every piece used in the first movie. And all the cues I’ve writen in are scenes from the movie. One of them is “You’re late!” “A wizard is never late.”)

Well, that’s pretty much what’s been happening. I’ve made crazy friends (though most of our conversations are certainly not blog appropriate) played amazing music, and gotten better at horn. What more could you ask for? :D

If Tieflings are a base race, it’s 4th edition. I’m not the biggest fan of 4th edition (even though 3rd is more complex and less balanced, it seems to me as though the rules that govern the game world are more consistent), but I do play it,* and what I’ve come to learn is that many of the things in the books are just guidelines. Dragonborn and tieflings bother you? Kick ’em out. Call eladrin “high elves” and plain old elves “wood elves,” if that makes it seem more Tolkienic. Rogues are basically thieves. Warlocks and wizards=different fancy names for magic users. If none of the warlock power sources appeal to you, just say that in this game, they get them from somewhere else.
I guess what I’m trying to say is that the rules are just numbers, and YOU get to choose what words you wrap around them.
*well, I DM it. Mostly because the only other player willing to be DM is no longer allowed behind the screen. He left the last campaign in a complete mess.

49.1- Well, yes, I know. If I was DM I would just play it like version 1, or play it similar to version 1. But I’m not DM, and I can’t really argue against all these new weird races because we have a Tiefling and a Goliath in our party (to make these seem more Tolkeinic, I am calling them a balrog and an ent, though they aren’t really). I kind of just have to deal, I think. Version 1 just seems so much simpler. I feel like the actual roleplaying is likely to get lost in all this complication. I don’t care about the fighting part much–that’s boring. I’m a rogue. I want to sneak behind enemy lines and do Rogue-ish stuff.

I didn’t know there was more than one kind of elf. That doesn’t bother me. And of course it’s not going to be like Tolkein really. But it’s just strayed so far from the simple 6-race system. How can I keep it all STRAIGHT?

I think this is probably just one more way in which I’m rebelling against the present… -deep sigh-

Oh man what an awesome weekend so far.

Friday around 1, my mom drove me and my friend D into the city (I live nearish Chicago) for Pitchfork Music Festival. We went to my uncle’s condo in the city (he doesn’t live there normally and let us borrow it for a few days), then after some slight mishaps (forgetting the tickets and having to go back, etc) me and D made it to the festival. We got there kind of late, so we missed one of the performers we meant to see (The Tallest Man On Earth), but we did see most of Liars (kinda alt-rocky band, they were okay but nothing special), who were playing when we got there.

After Liars was Robyn, a female popish singer. She was pretty upbeat, but we wandered over to the merchandise and looked around while she was on. I got another Modest Mouse shirt because the ones just for Pitchfork had lame designs this year.

After Robyn we went over to the stage she’d just sang on (and where Modest Mouse was going to play (at this point I should mention there were 3 stages, two for music and one farther off for comedians)) and we worked our way and found a spot not TOO far from it but not as close as would’ve been fun. If we’d made it like 20 people up we’d have been at the edge of the dancing/jumping/crazy part which would’ve been fun.

While we waited we watched Broken Social Scene, who were good, and one of the guitarists looked like David Tennant from a distance and at a certain angle, which was fun.

Then Modest Mouse started and everything was awesome and beautiful and I even remembered to write almost all the songs on myself in sharpie so I could remember the setlist. Here’s what I got:

    – Tiny Cities Made of Ashes
    – ?
    – Devil’s Workday
    – Education
    – Satellite Skin
    – Autumn Beds
    – Dashboard
    – Satin in a Coffin
    – Dramamine
    – Parting of the Sensory
    -The View
    – The Whale Song

Then the went off, and we stood aroud and clapped until they came back. I don’t remember the first song they played, but they ended wiht Black Cadillacs, which was fun.
After Dramamine, the lead singer Issac Brock said somethng along the lines of “So I want to give you all a chance to learn from my mistakes. While I was playing, I see this glowstick, that wasn’t there before. And so I wondered what’d happen if I bit it, and could sing with my mouth all glowing and s***. So I put it in my teeth–testing the waters, if you will–and it turns out it was ALREADY broken, and wouldn’t you know it now I can taste all these gnarly chemicals. So I spit… and it glows. And I’m probably never going to get that taste out of my mouth.
And in one song Isaac Brock played with his teeth, woo! I’d hoped he’d do that, it looks cool in pictures but I’d wondered if it actually worked.

Then they left, which was sad, and it took ages to get back to the condo because of the 1800 people but we made it back. And today we walked around the city, which was nice. They’re filming for Transformers 3 on Michigan Avenue, it was cool looking at the set for that. They had cars positioned on the bridge (Which was halfway raised), and at some point they’ll drive a car off the bridge and onto a boat in the river and blow up a different boat. Woo!
Also I saw part of the car that is used for Bumblebee (it was under a tarp, like all the “good” cars for the movie, but you could see the wheels and the yellow) and it was AWESOME

Not sure if the page refreshed and I didn’t post this or if I just can’t see my comment, so sorry if this goes through twice

So, we (my family minus dad) are currently looking into getting new cell phones. We had the LG Shine 1. LG Shine 2 is not in stock, otherwise I think I’d consider it.

I rather like slider phones, myself, and of the 5 or so phones Dad seemed willing to upgrade us to, only two were sliders. Samsung a777 and LG CU360.

Do any of you have either of these? If so….What are your thoughts?

The Samusung apparently has volume issues, according to several customer reviews I’ve seen. LG apparently has horrid battery life, plus I’m not too keen on it’s small memory (10 mb).

Oh, should probably add….We don’t have a texting or data plan, so….Not really going to be using any texting/internet features they might ahve.

    Yeah, anyway. Thoughts?

my old phone was an LG and the battery was terrible. towards the end i was having to charge it once or twice every day. i did get it refurb though. my new phone is also LG, the cosmos, and it is working pretty well. i don’t know much about samsungs, i think my friends who have them say they work fine :-/

On the subject of LG phones, (not sure if this would directly help Luna at all, but hey, I’ll put my two cents in) I have the LG Neon (I’ve had it since last November) and it’s a slider, but the back/lock button on the front is already broken. I’m not sure if it’s my fault – I did use it a lot before, but it’s not like I was abusing my phone or anything…. :/ But otherwise it works well, and I do text quite a bit. (The keyboard on the LG Neon is a full one and it’s been very quick and easy) As far as battery life goes, it’s fine. I don’t use it all that often – mostly to contact my parents and to talk to babysitting clients – (Occasionally text friends) but it’s been good. I usually only have to charge it every few days.

Sliders are usually better for people who use texting a lot…like ebeth said, if you’re not going to be using a texting plan, a flip phone might be better. (And probably less expensive I would guess, although that could depend…)

As far as the Samsung goes, my parents both have the same model of a Samsung phone (I think it’s called the Impression maybe? Can’t remember for sure.) which they like. I’ve played around with both of theirs a bit, and they seem to work well. It’s a touchscreen, which is very good. And they both have data and texting plans, and as far as that goes the memory’s been fine.

ebeth and starr: Oh, the slider type I”m thinking of isn’t any more geared toward texting than a flip phone. The one I have, and the couple I’ve looked at, don’t have full QWERTY keyboards, just slight open vertically to reveal the number keys.

I guess I like the slider for one, because it’s the only kiind I’ve ever ahd, and also, I feel like it’s a lot easier to open to answer calls, than a flip phone….Plus I feel I’d break the hinge on the flip pretty quickly. :/

All of the phones Dad is currently looking at for us to choose from, be they slider or flip, are completely free for us to upgrade to, so….Cost really isn’t a factor.

      Thanks. :)

I think mine was free, but only with the “mail in rebate” or whatever. The thing with most phones is that they go on and off sale pretty quickly, so I think in general it seems like if you wait awhile for it to get on sale it’s likely it will in the near future.

I have neither, and in fact have never owned a cell phone. However, through USE of cell phones, I can recommend a Samsung phone. It is owned by a friend, and I unfortunately do not know the name. I’m going to see him today and I’ll get the exact model. Also, it may be a good idea to buy an internet/texting enabled phone, in case you ever switch to a different data plan. I’d recommend the Motorola Droid (the old one) or the iPhone 3GS. HTC also has a very nice touchscreen called the Aria (AT&T, primarily) and the Evo (Verizon, primarily). Good luck choosing, and I’ll be back tomorrow afternoon with the model for that Samsung. It’s about iPhone size, maybe a little wider, and has a full QWERTY that slides out of the bottom (upright, not sideways) No touchscreen, not designed for web browsing.

58~ I have a Samsung (the Samsung rant, if you want to be specific) and it’s worked for a year and a half for me. When I was going to get a phone I originally wanted to get the LG Rumor, but everyone at the stores told me it was a horrible phone and to never buy one. My friends that had them didn’t seem too unhappy with them, but meh. *shrug*
Samsung apparently has good phones, and I’ve been pretty happy with mine. Only faults I have are that it occasionally freezes up and dies while I’m using it and that it doesn’t have the greatest battery life. I always use the powersave mode, but I still have to charge it all the time and it’s run out on me a few times.I’m also not a huge fan of the styling, to me it just looks kind of awkward, but since it works I guess that doesn’t matter. Other than that I’m pleased with it.

The worse boy news is that there was a really, really obnoxious boy named Sam. He was tall, gangly, and constantly wore his wetsuit whenever we went swimming. I know some people look good and sexy (:D) in a wetsuit, but Sam just looked weird. Also, he always thought he was hilarious, but he was really just annoying.

On the last day we got certificates that said we had completed every thing and blah blah blah. So Sam says something (I can’t remember what it was) that he thought was funny, but it wasn’t. This very quiet, sort of depressing girl speaks up and says “You’re not funny, Sam, so stop trying to be.” Everyone around her said stuff like “Yeah!” and “All right, _______!”

So I went out to see my tutor under a clear blue sky, and while we were in the library, there was a thunderstorm. It passed, and when I finished my work, it was overcast, but not raining anymore, so I went to a Mexican restaurant near the building to get lunch.

The burrito was delicious, and they threw in nachos for free. (For free! They just automatically give you nachos along with whatever else you order.) But by the time I finished eating, it had started pouring again.

I didn’t have my umbrella, because it had been clear when I’d left my dorm that morning, so I grabbed a free newspaper, held it over my head, and ran back to the lab building as fast as I could. Being completely stupid, I ran right by the Peabody Museum, forgetting that:

    1) I can get in for free because I’m a student.
    2) They would totally stay and let me look around until the rain stops.
    3) They probably sell umbrellas in the gift shop. (I went back later, and it turns out they DO)

But the museum is so close to the lab that I decided just to run for it. Unfortunately, the sidewalk around the lab is indented in the middle for some reason, and there were lots of puddles. By the time I got into the lab, the newspaper was wet pulp, my sneakers were full of water, and my pants and sleeves were soaked.

I dried off as best I could, did some reading in the library, and then went to Astronomy class when it was time. I walked back to my dorm, stopping in the museum and then the Barnes & Noble to buy a collapsable umbrella. When I did all of this, it was perfectly clear.

I ate dinner and went to the help session for my Physics class. When I left, it was raining again, so I used my new umbrella to come back to my dorm. Right now, I’m sitting in my dorm and there’s another thunderstorm going on.

Sometimes, like in my case, this is a huge packet of information.) Then, you and a bunch of other characters are put in some situation, and you’re trying to ultimately defeat evil. (Some characters have more specific goals. Others just have general things they can do to help.) And then you, well, are your character. You act like en, you talk like en, you interact with others like en… We were doing one about werewolves. • Regarding therapists: I wouldn’t go that far, but it is true that the right fit is very important and that’s not easy to achieve. Among other challenges, the quality varies enormously, almost anyone can call enself a therapist, there are few solid objective measures to tell in advance what you’re getting, and the average person isn’t all that well informed about the measures that do exist or the types of therapy that are available. If all that weren’t problem enough, people are usually looking for a therapist when they’re not likely to be in the best shape for making judgment calls.

I’m so excited! My mom said I could set up a saltwater aquarium! *squee* I’ve been glued to the computer for the last two days researching fish and coral and live rock. Every thing is really confusing. I plan on going really slow with the set up, because my tank is only 12 gallons, so I want to make sure that everything is good before I start to add stuff. Most sites I went on said that it was a bad idea to start out with a tank that small, because the water quality can degrade very quickly, but that’s what I have, so it’ll have to do. Once it’s up and running, I hope to have a two or three snails, four shrimp, and only one or two fish. But of course, since it’s a reef, most of the color will be provided by the coral and other invertebrates.

I mean, the thing I hate about movies based off books (which about most of them are) is that when I read the book, I picture the characters as the actors who played them in the movies. If I ever re-read Twilight, I’ll picture Edward as Robert Pattinson and Bella as Kristen Stewart. They weren’t what I expected them to be like… you know? I’m probably just rambling but… yeah. :)

Verbal: 610. Considering the practice exams (which aren’t like the real test, because the real one determines the next question, based upon whether you answered the previous one correctly or not) for which the lowest I got was 700 something….730, I think, I was really hoping for better. Not to mention, historically, on the SATs (at least when I took it in highschool, maybe not 7th and 8th grade) and the PSAT, I did better on verbal….So for me ot do worse on the verbal than math….Not normal for me. Whatever. Somebody remind me why on earth I would be complaining about a 610 out of 800?

Math: 740. I’m quite happy with this, it’s better than I did on the SATs (700). And more on the order of what I was hoping for from the GREs. And better than I did on most of the practice exams….

As NSwat says it does remind me a bit of Inception, but i must say that I understand you completely. It can be awkward to look at yourself in the mirror and perhaps talk how you do to your friends and see how they must perceive you. A lot of the time (at least, for me it is), how you think in your head and how you think they perceive you are different from how you think they do and how you picture yourself. My thoughts are so much different than how I act at times. I think of myself in two parts, one part I show and one part I partly show. The part I show completely is the wacky person who can be a bit of a jerk, and the one I partly show is the logically thinking and extremely curious side of me. I find that if I totally show myself, it either offends people or makes them surprised, because it’s so different.

In dreams I think you don’t have anything to hide, so you’re your true self. But most of my dreams are too wild for me to make sense of that.

I think it was good to hear someone else say something like that…

Has anyone else heard about what Wikileaks did today? They released almost 92,000 classified documents to the NY Times, the Guardian, and Der Spiegel about the war in Afghanistan from January 2004 to December 2009. It’s absolutely incredible–I’ve been reading through a lot of them. The Guardian has the best coverage of it all, and you can read all the reports directly. Reading through these, my opinions on the war definitely have changed. I don’t think we can win this war at any cost. If we were to send our entire military to Afghanistan, we couldn’t win. I just… my mind’s blown. The CIA’s been expanding its paramilitary operations while reporting that successes that it’s had were actually carried out by Afghan forces–to raise support for the war and paint a better picture. Unmanned drones are very uncertain and put our troops in a lot of danger. The Pakistani government is assisting the Taliban. Just… stupefying.

      • Well, they didn’t tell us the Taliban had heat-seeking missiles, and they gave Afghan soldiers credit for some things that American soldiers actually did. So far, though, I haven’t heard that the Wikileaks documents have exposed any major deceptions by the government. Anyone who has been paying attention probably already had a good general idea of what is going on over there. Is there something important that I’m missing?

        Pie 0
        Squid 0
        • Piggy says:

Well, the documents show a rather less optimistic view of the war as a whole than the government and media have been reporting. The Taliban’s attacks–especially through IEDs–are escalating, Pakistan and maybe even Iran have been aiding the Taliban, paramilitary operations are more common and (arguably) irresponsible than we thought, there’s a lot of infighting between Afghani forces, dozens of civilian deaths have been reported as something they’re not, drug lords have been given places in the government, unmanned planes have a fairly high failure rate–the list goes on. It’s not so much that the government has been lying so much as keeping the truth quiet. Lots of half-lies.

…Am I honestly bad for not caring about this at all? I just get strains of And Then There Were None‘s last verse repeating in my head. Pie 0
        Squid 0
        • FantasyFan?!?! says:

In this case, the other side of the issue is that the reports end right before the Obama administration’s recent policy changes. Meaning that the government should be fixing some the issues present in the reports now. (Of course, my own cynical view is that such change will be slow and extremely hard to implement, and we’ll never have a straight, 100% win in the region–at most, a slightly better outcome for the US, which doesn’t necessarily factor in if the Afghans are actually better off or not.Not that we’ll ever know unless some more recent documents are leaked… I’m rambling. Sorry)

What I don’t get is that if the reports mostly contained information we already know, why are all the politicians condemning it as endangering national security? The new stuff Robert mentioned, you’d think the insurgents already know.

By those standards, the biggest damage will be to PR, and to all those mindblown constituents. Drawing new attention to old issues, and whatnot. As for myself, I am…not mindblown, just less than pleased with the government. Upset. Angry. A little betrayed. But not surprised. Yay cynicism.

Wait! I know! May be it’s not the Taliban, but other countries that will cause the problem. Refusal to cooperate with American goals because of supposed war crimes. I can see countries like Russia and China refusing to change their behavior at US pressure and instead bringing up Afghanistan. “Well, look at what you did there, you hypocrite, why should we do what you say” kind of thing.

The leaked documents might also help the U.S. in some ways, however. They’re pretty embarrassing for Pakistan. Maybe now the U.S. government will be able to pressure the Pakistanis into being more cooperative.

And, of course, anything that encourages ordinary Americans to pay more attention to what’s going on in the rest of world can’t be all bad.

Whee! Yesterday was fun. A friend from last week’s art camp, A, invited me to an English Folk Dancing class/group she is part of. It was fun, and I got several remarks on the fact that I was a good dancer, especially as it was my first time doing English Folk Dancing. (I knew most of the steps and picked up the ones that I didn’t very quickly- ballet helps a lot) I made new friends, and met an enigma. He is an enigma in the fact that he doesn’t even come up to my shoulder, and at first glance would seem to be a little kid, but he doesn’t act like a little kid. I wish I had seen my face when he walked up and said “May I have this dance?”, I was pretty surprised. Even more surprised when, after the dance was over, he asked me if I had done English folk dancing, and when I said that I hadn’t, looked faintly surprised and commented that I was very good. XD And he’s a very good dancer himself, so that is another thing. Note to self: Next time, ask him how old he is.
Another fun thing: At 7:00pm yesterday, we were having a break between dances, so I told A very solemnly that we had known each other for exactly one week, two days, and ten hours at that exact moment. A and her older sister found it very amusing that I like doing math and do useless calculations like that in my head when I’m bored. But it’s true, I do useless calculations in my head when I’m bored. Because math is good.

And then, after that was over, the car wouldn’t start. So we were stuck in the parking lot for ages until we finally got someone to fix the battery, and didn’t get home until about two hours after the dance thing had ended, even though we didn’t actually go anywhere. *tired*

I am rewarding myself for reading sections with listening to songs, MB, and, if I read enough, Harry Potter movies. I would read the books, but my head just can’t take any more words.

I saw A Midsummer Night’s Dream Monday night, and it was AMAZING! They made the play very humorous and easy to grasp, even though Shakespearean language is difficult to understand. And the guy who plays Puck is cute. That doesn’t ever hurt. The group that did it was from a local high school that has a really nice arts department. They were chosen from a thousand or so high schools who were eligible and applied to go to the Fringe Festival in Scotland. There are 51 high schools going from the US and there will also be adult theatre companies from around the world attending. That is SO AMAZING! Oh, and they totally deserve to go.

OK, I must read more AP if I ever want to delve into the magical world of Harry Potter.

I got the 3rd Season of Doctor Who and two Doctor Who magazines today! I love my mother. I should arrange to have doctor’s appointments in Anchorage more often, and see if I can convince her to always take me to the bookstore after and get awesome stuff…..

So, since I was rewatching season 3 currently–and had watched the first two, Smith and Jones and Shakespeare Code already–I’d been thinking, hey, start on ep 3, make the family watch. Mom wanted to start from the top of Season 3, so we just finished watching the first three episodes of Season 3, Smith & Jones, Shakespeare Code and Gridlock….So I’ve now seen the first 2 of those 3 times, since I just saw Shakespeare Code for the second time MOnday, but that’s okay.

Unfortunately, I dont’ think my sis and parents grasp the utter flamablamablous nature of DW. Dad said it’s alright, but certainly not something worth getting addicted to ( big hint at how the cake are you addicted to something that’s this mediocre). Mom made the comment that it appeared to be supposed to be a comedy, and my sis was more whinging about how stupid it all was, at least in part due to the British humor….

*sigh* I’m stuck with a family who doesn’t understand the sheer brilliance of Doctor Who. I’m going to see if we can’t watch another couple episodes or more tomorrow….But for now I might go read some of my DW mags I got….

Oh, the other thing. I made the comment that there’s a Torchwood magazine, and that I’d totally love to get it (very unsubtle hint at “Hey, mom, I want you to pay for a subscription for TW mag). She wasn’t entirely against the idea, but…..Basically said TW mag or Muse, that she doubted she’d get me both. So now I have to decide if I want to stop getting Muse, in favor of Torchwood magazine….. I want both……

I was surfing the web, and I came across a few mentions of…a sequel to Avatar: The Last Airbender, called The Legend of Korra. From what I’ve found, it looks and sounds amazing–set 70 years in the future, in a steampunk city, following the next Avatar’s adventures.. I think my heart skipped a beat when I first read the news. As a matter of fact, it sounds so amazing I’m not entirely sure it’s real. Does anyone else know anything about this?

For future reference- searching for “Concorde” in a library catalog that has lots of old materials in French is not very helpful.

Spam: “To post irrelevant or inappropriate messages to one or more Usenet newsgroups, mailing lists, or other messaging system in deliberate or accidental violation of netiquette.” A slightly outdated definition, but not incorrect.

(You’re still in your AE, by the way.)

Whee! Just got back from a very fun day at the water park with gingerkid and her dad! :D First we did mini-golf, which I was epic at. Ginger cheated a lot, picking up the ball and putting it in the hole, kicking the ball into the hole with her feet, and hitting my ball away from the hole. Sometimes, if I took too long, she would pick up my ball and drop it in the hole as well. After mini-golfing we had lunch, which was yummy. I taught Ginger a hand-clapping game that my sister and I do very often, and we decided that we must have nose functions. Mine is a toggle, making me speak French, and Ginger’s makes her say “I come from the planet Gallifrey.”. After lunch we went on one of the slides, but when we were halfway through the line to another slide all the rides were closed down because of the storms that were passing through. Oh! I just remembered the interesting and slightly scary thing that happened in the line for the second slide! There was this girl who was like hurt or something, maybe on the landing above us, and they rushed her down to the ground and then she collapsed and was lying there on the ground, motionless, with her eyes closed, for a minute or so then she opened her eyes and got up again. (The sad thing was, the first thing I thought about upon seeing this event was “Jack Harkness!”, which Ginger found both amusing and slightly morbid.) Then we waited for the storm to pass and the rides to be re-opened. When everything was clear, we swam around for a while, then went to go look for the Lazy River. Of course, when we got to the Lazy River, another storm got there. XD So we went back and waited for the storm to pass, then went back to the Lazy River. Ginger and I went around the LR about four times. Then we had to leave. Ginger will probably also be posting about this, and I may have missed some things or gotten some things wrong. Ginger, feel free to yell at me or whatever, or just correct me.

…and now I have the hiccups. WHY?
