Pleistocene Dreams, Part 1

For July’s random thread, MuseBlog’s yearlong traipse through time and space repels the summer heat with a visit to the latest of Earth’s many ice ages.

The glaciers outside are frightful, but we’ve got a cozy cave, a crackling fire, a gallimaufry of earth-tone pigments, and — pies? Yikes! Duck!!!

    ‘Lo all!

I can’t believe it’s July already. I mean, I probably say this on the first day of every month, (So you can roll your eyes here…) but this is making me feel like this summer is going by really quickly.

I probably said this already, but I love the picture of the Kokon. :P Very flammy.

In general news, (since I feel like I haven’t posted any general boring news about me in awhile, and, of course, boring y’all to tears is certainly a goal of mine…) I’m still at the beach, but not actually going to the beach. (Much.) *insert various complaints here* I’m playing basketball though, which is fun. I’m also doing a bit of babysitting for a family we know and making a little cash in the process. One of their kids is obsessed with Harry Potter, so we’ve been playing Harry Potter on their Wii almost all the time. This is actually a lot of fun for me as well as her, so that’s nice. :)

(And yes, this is all an attempt to snatch the first post.)

    Yay, July! Happy Canada Day!

For my birthday, my family is hosting a massive Filipino party… about 30+ people are coming, and it’ll be a blast. It’s technically a 4th of July picnic, but my parents are making it a 4th of July/birthday party so that they don’t have to make too much food (birthday parties can’t be potluck! That would be silly).

And I’m marching the local parade with colorguard in one city (‘twould normally be in two, except one is the day of the massive party).

So, at first I was bummed when I saw the dates announced for the last two space shuttle launches, because the last one is next year when I’ve been reading-hearing-repeating-writing-taking-to-heart-believing in the phrase “2010 shuttle retirement” for six years. (But they actually meant Fiscal Year 2010, and not y’know, NORMAL Year 2010, and Fiscal Years last until summer of the next year, so it’s actually still a true statement, I guess.)

But then, I looked again, and I saw that the last launch date was February 26, 2011… which is my birthday! So I told my mom, and she thought it was really cool, and she said… Maybe!

Most of my friends in real life are older than me (gee, I wonder why), but I’ve passed some of them (who are now extremely bitter) but I have a group of friends where all of them are at least 5’10”. So I will probably still be the shortest there.

There’s this one tall girl I know who always pets me on the head (hard enough that it hurts, actually) and calls me one of the following:
          “Runty”
          “Midget”
“Chibi chibi” (which, says she, means “runty dwarf” in Japanese. WHAT.)
          “Chibi chibi runt”
and variations of those. It annoys me so much, even though it’s typical of most of the tall people I know, probably because I’m a year older than she is.
I told Ginger the other day that I loved her because she was the only tall person I had ever met who didn’t pet me on the head and call me a midget.
As a result, after the concert on Tuesday, when we dropped her off at her house, she petted me on the head. I glowered at her for a few seconds, then we started laughing hysterically.
I dislike being a midget. People think that my sister’s older than I am, when in reality I’m two 1/2 years OLDER. *grumbles*

Yeeeeeeeeeeeeesssssssssss it’s the end of Term 2! Yay! This is what i did today:
Homeroom: The populars in my group were whispering to each other. What with the significant glances at me followed by a “I’ll tell you next lesson” and more whispering, it was BLATANTLY OBVIOUS I had something to do with it, but since when did they do anything logically? I just wish J was there(she’s not in my homeroom) to liven things up.
Commerce: Mrs P, who spent most of the semester giving us so much work that even the populars hated it more than maths, let us go to a lab and play computer games.
Maths: Oblivious to our complaints, Mrs S made us do work. Okay, so she let us go through the excerise orally, but we still had to be paying attention! Difficult for my class at the best of times, but today… *shakes head*
PE: My usual semi-popular PE buddies were away, so I ended up messing around with my friends and some people from maths/French/science class.
Lunch: Three of my friends won chips, chocolate, and soft drink in Commerce. A and I decided to help them eat it. Need I say more?
Science: Trivia! Somehow my team managed the lowest score, but it was fun.
French: FRENCH PARTY!!! Yes, that totally merits green text. French sixth period on the last day of term? What could go wrong? Someone thought to bring croissants, and there was the usual amount of junk food, so we acted totally insane while Mr R(he was being perfectly serious) commented on how much more mature we are than the Year 8’s. Maybe there’s some truth to everyone’s comments about how annoying the year group below us are.

So, I am in Switzerland, guys! I am not a bog fan of long plane flights, but I got to watch Toy Story 2 (plane movie) and AVPM (on my iPod) so it’s all good, even if I was a sleep zombie today.
I got to see the room I’ll be staying in at the school–my dad spent a few summers here when he was my age and knows the woman who runs it, so when we went over to visit I got a bit of a tour. I’m a little less nervous having seen the place, I guess. Also, the children of two of my dad’s friends from when he was here are coming too (I don’t know them though, they’re Spanish). After they drop us off they’re all going out to lunch together. I think it’s nice that that friendship has endured.

Homesickness and I have a bit of a history together, which is why I’m anxious about this. Still, it’s an awesome opportunity and I’m also excited.

I forgot to mention that Uruguay has no chance of beating the Netherlands (barring a Dutch collapse) without Suarez (the handball guy). He is probably their best finisher and best player besides Forlan. But Forlan is nice. His sister is disabled, so when he was a child, he vowed that he would find a way to pay all her medical bills. He dedicates every one of his goals to her. He wouldn’t have done the handball.

Another reason to hate Suarez — he scored both of Uruguay’s goals against South Korea.

It’s too flat. TOO FLAT. Not even a tiny hill.
Yesterday, there was about an hour’s length of driving in which the only things as far as the eye could see in any direction were cornfields and windmills, and you couldn’t see the horizon, and the sky was cloudless, and it was beautiful, and I hated it. Of course, none of my family gets it and when I tried to explain, I got looked at funny. I need mountains and hills and a horizon, or else I get extremely uncomfortable. I can’t look at a mountain range on the horizon and wonder what’s behind it. I can’t wonder what’s over the top of that next hill. It’s so. Dreadfully. FLAT.

And then AlpacaLips suddenly went Southern in self-defense for some reason and started singing “May the Bird of Paradise fly up your nose” with his full-blown Tennessean accent. In a gourmet Japanese restaurant.

And apparently english lit doesn’t count as english for the sake of this app (it counts for social sci), so now I”m not even sure if I have my english reqs in, since the vast majority of college english I’ve taken has been lit courses. And with the whole early admissions program I’m in, I’m not sure if college courses taken during highschool, ie, not the college I’m presnetly attending, count at all, since they’re not taken as a full time student at my current college, so even if I dig up one of those as having been non-lit, I dunno if it even would count, or if I’ve gotta somehow stick an english course into this coming fall semester. Since I can’t hve more than two courses pending this coming spring, and those are already claimed by biochem and physics II.

Regarding all the Uruguay comments, you have to realize that a handball to keep a goal from scoring removes the handballer from the game and gives the team a penalty kick which players usually can convert. A lot of teams would rather have a 80-90% chance of scoring and a man advantage than just a goal. In the Uruguay-Ghana game, the ejection didn’t matter because there was practically no time left, but Ghana should have made the kick. I agree that Ghana deserved to win, but I don’t think it was cheating. Bad sportsmanship? Yes. However, it wasn’t like Thierry Henry’s handball in the qualifiers, where the referee didn’t see it and France got a goal unfairly. Ghana should have gotten a goal anyway. (And they really need to work on their PKs. 2/5 is horrible [counting the shootout and the end of game shot].)

That’s not to say I support Uruguay. It was an ultracompetetive play, and Suarez is probably being hailed as a hero in his country. But it was still wrong.

I wanted Ghana to win because it was the first World Cup in Africa and they were the only African nation left (No others made it out of the group stage) and because Uruguay beat South Korea.

    Pie 0

    • Ebeth says:

using your hands IS cheating. it’s against the rules to touch the ball with your hands. suarez deliberately touched the ball with his hands. cheating.

and yes, they should have made the PK, but in most cases it’s a fair penalty for a goal that -might- have been. In this case there was no question, the ball would have definitely gone in if suarez hadn’t used his hands. It was going -well- over his head, the goalie was nowhere to be seen, and there was no question that it would have gone in. a PK put the goalie back in action, making this one of the very rare situations where it actually was not really a fair penalty for the foul. yes, they should have made the kick, but a -lot- of penalty kicks is psychological, and after just having a goal revoked, you are not going to be in the best state of mind to score. that’s a LOT of pressure.

i’m not arguing the call, it was the only thing the ref could have done. there’s really nothing in the rules for this. but i will continue to hate uruguay and i maintain that they cheated

      • Radiant_Darkness says:

The point is, there is something in the rules. Suarez acted wrongly, and was punished accordingly. He got a red card, and Ghana got a PK. Maybe there isn’t a specific rule for when someone saves a goal with their hands in the last minute of overtime, but still, in most cases, Ghana would have been fine with the handball.

Also, put yourself in Suarez’s place. If you are representing your nation in the biggest sporting events of the world, and you see a way to keep your country from losing, wouldn’t you do it?

PS. Using your hands is a foul.

Whee! Camp is pretty fun so far. Yesterday the teen group (And Devon and Erin and Katherine and Devon and Chris’s mom and the Dormmommy and Ellie and JL.) went minigolfing after dinner, then after minigolfing we went to the waterpark. At the waterpark, I went down the slides at full speed too many times in succession and got motion sickness, then kind of swam around for a while. (Oh yeah, JL was trying to take pictures of people as they went down the slide… it’s too fast, kind of. She kept getting my feet.) Then I changed out of my swimsuit and the fireworks started. (Oh, I just remembered- THERE WAS A LIFEGUARD WHO LOOKED EXACTLY LIKE JACK HARKNESS! I kept seeing him and thinking “He looks familiar….” and then I’m like “Oh. My. God. It’s Jack Harkness!” and then I couldn’t stop laughing. XD) The fireworks were awesome. Then me and JL were taking pictures of everyone looking like complete and utter idiots, except Erin refused to cooperate. And then Phil not Phil, the other boy whose name I cannot remember, was on the phone with his girlfriend and Chris was like “I love you, I miss you- SAY IT!” and acting really weird and everyone was laughing hysterically. Then we got back to the dorms and we wanted to watch the rest of Sherlock Holmes, so while I was on the phone talking to a friend for a little bit, they went down to the theatre to set it up. But they couldn’t figure out how to turn on the TV, so that didn’t work. Then us girls had a “cello jam session” that lasted until about 12:10. (Well, Zoe, Anna, and Jess played cello and I sat on the couch and watched.) And then Anna was like “Let’s teach Jen how to play cello!” but nothing really happened with that. Then……
Oh yeah, and I took like a gazillion videos and pictures of everyone. In the car on the way to the minigolf place, I was just randomly videoing everyone.
    I got in the video:
    JL rolling her eyes
    The top of Ellie’s head
Anna being like “Whut?” and then kind of looking at me and seeing the camera, then turning around in her seat (she was sitting in front of me) and smiling hugely for the camera
Dormmommy asking us if we thought we were lost
    And so on.

I almost got hit with a firework: my cousin was lighting those crackling balls in his hand, waiting for the fuse to go down a bit, then throwing them so they went off in midair. Well, when he threw one of them, it broke in half right after it left his hand, so it went flying towards me and a pile of fireworks. It was lucky that neither I nor the fireworks caught on fire.

For the pirate year, I brought in some “treasures” from my house, including a ring with Egyptian hieroglyphics on it that was my mom’s. There was a display involving some trees and a banner in the room where we did the presentations, and I was showing the kids the ring when one kid went “Is it CURSED?”

The other helpers would encourage the kids to go and touch it, and he would move his hand. Oh my gosh, the reactions were soo funny. It didn’t take long, though, before the parental units (logically) stopped us.

We continued our wandering, and eventually started to play a weird variety of volleyball, badminton, soccer, and basketball in the yard. Because there were so many kids there (Some as small as three years old to college age) it got crazy pretty quickly, but was insanely fun despite the fact that I can’t hit a volleyball for my life. After that, the five of us (again) and a group of guys we know from our grade went over and started swinging on their big seat that sits on their front porch. We did this for about ten minutes or so until finally someone stood up, sat back down, and the whole left half of the rocking chair-swing mixover went crashing down to the floor. (I was on the right end, which meant I was flying up in the air when this happened.) Besides a small bruise, no one was hurt, but the whole left side of the swing thing had crashed to the floor. After the initial screams of colorful language, the parents got involved, who quickly told us that we’re not the first to break it, which only made me feel a little better. Of course, we probably should have known better, but no one was really using their brains yesterday…

Oh yeah, so then we went and watched the fireworks and screamed our heads off. Afterwords some people cut the glo-sticks in half so that the liquid part that glows in the inside flew out, and then proceeded to smear it on their skin and clothes so that they, too, were “glowing.” Um, yeah. I doubt that’s a good thing for you, so I tried to stay away. :/ It was insane. But fun. And a little more eventful than I would have liked, but still.

    The End. (Wow, long post.)

    • It may not be crazy or irresponsible to use paper in that way. The trees used in paper aren’t “wild” trees from rainforests; they’re softwoods planted for the purpose and grown as crops, mostly in northern Europe and North America. How much extra paper would be needed to sop up the oil, beyond what we’d be using anyway? Were the trees grown sustainably? I think we’d need more facts before ruling on the idea.

Furthermore, you have to consider the possible alternative. If cloth towels were used to soak up the oil, they would have to be washed. This would take large amounts of electricity, water, and soap–soap that most likely comes in non-biodegradable containers which would be deposited in a landfill, maybe even finding their way, eventually, into the ocean. Paper towels are more likely to be biodegradable, I think.

Hmm, okay, let’s figure this out. There are seven departments: Dance, Theater, Animation, Film, Creative Writing, Visual Arts, and Music. Music should really be split into Band/Orchestra and Singing, since band geeks and singing people are so not the same thing, which gives us eight. Perfect.
Gryffindor: Gryffindors are apparently chivalrous, daring, and brave. They’re usually better at the physical stuff– most Slytherins decry them as “all brawn and no brains” sort of thing. Due to physical awesomeness, I’ll have to stick Dance in there, and… hm… probably Theater.
Hufflepuff: Loyal. Hardworking. HP fans who don’t like them call them the “everybody else” group, as in “good guys Gryffindor, bad guys Slytherin, and stick everybody else in Hufflepuff”. I’ll put Singing in Hufflepuff, since they’re usually the loyal-hardworking type, and… Visual Arts.
Ravenclaw: Creative Writing and Band. Not even hard. We are the geeky and intelligent goof-offs.
Slytherin: That leaves us with Film and Animation. Which sort of works, I guess, because Slytherins are ambitious and clever, which often describes Film people and Animation people. (There is NOTHING wrong with being ambitious! And why is every single Slytherin evil? Gah!)

Akcherly, are we going to have a drummer? Because if so, we need a drumset. And if we have a drumset, the drummer should be able to practice on. And if they’re able to practice on it, it will most likely will be at their house. And if it is at their house, it won’t be very easy to move. And if it isn’t very easy to move, we should keep it their. And if we’re going to keep it their, we should practice there.

          • A face that is obviously not real is okay, but we’d much prefer not to see any photographs (or faithful portraits) of faces.Although we did give special dispensation early on, others took that as a go ahead signal to up any picture of a celebrity. The photos simply confuse the issue., in part because a celebrity who seems obvious to you may not be to us. (Your vision is better than ours, too.)

If I may say so, it actually seems a little…odd to me that such colorful individualists as make up the Musiverse would want to blur over their identities with a brand-name face that might show up anywhere on the Internet. Occasionally I’ve seen avatars on other sites that matched ones I’ve seen here and found it quite jarring when the sentiments expressed were far removed from what one would expect from the MBer in question. (One I particularly remember was seeing Elias’s avatar attached to someone who was as adamant as he yet on the opposite side of his favorite issues.)

    Pie 0
    Squid 0
    • Enceladus says:

I’m pretty sure that anti-aliasing can produce what seems to be a straight diagonal line. However, it adds semi-transparent pixels at the side of the line, creating the illusion it’s normal. I believe this is done with the paintbrush rather than the pencil tool.

        What’s anti-aliasing?

        • If you want to draw a straight line in any direction, make your first click at the point where the line starts, then hold the shift key while making a click at the point where you want to end the line.

I have to rush off to work where I am without a computer for the time being, so I can’t explain anti-aliasing right now. But the brush tool always has some sort of anti-aliasing built in (makes it look smoother) and the pencil does not (hence the stepstair look which may or may not be visible depending on resolution and/or zoom level).

Today was a lovely day. I had the day off work, as did my mom, and it was *gasp* sunny! And for probably the first time since I got back here mid-June, it got out of the mid 50s to low 60s, and hit 70 (at least in the sun). Which, while by no means *hot* is a quite lovely temperature, at least in my mind.

And Mom and I went hiking up in Hatcher Pass. ’twas lovely. Mom can’t do cross country hiking (or shouldn’t–she’s had two hip replacements, and has a fused spine w/ a metal rod–arthritis in her hips + scoliosis), but there’s a lovely little side road at one point, which although a bit rough, is all muskeg-y and brushy and hazardous to your footing.

So we probably hike a couple miles, and were only outside for about 2 1/2 hours, but surprise surprise (haha, not really) I got sunburned. lol, I actually didn’t think that short of time, her ein AK would get me burnt, I mean, yeah, if I were in FL or something,d efinitely, but the rays are so much more diffuse when you’re up north…But, hey, oh well. It doesn’t bother me, it’s not painful or anything, I just have depressingly sensitive skin, I suppose. *shrug* Price I pay for being blonde, I suppose.

And then we stopped for ice cream at this lovely little place where we have traditionally *always* gotten ice cream, every time we have ever gone camping up in Hatcher Pass, because we did it when we were little, so my sis and I have mde it tradition that on the way back from camping, we must leave the Pass via the Willow side, so as to drive by the place.

And then we went shopping (which in and of itself is not fun, but we had a couple things to buy, and I got a new swimsuit.)

And pizza for dinner. And if it’s nice, Dad and my sis and I will go hiking tomorrow, but I think it’s going to rain (and is actually raining right now at 11:45 as I’m typing this, so…Yeah, chance of rain is pretty dratted good. *sigh* )

    Hello, Fio!

Piggy spent another day airsoft-ing. It was, as it has always been, a blast. There were about a dozen boys there from my church and one other church, and the assistant pastor at my church even came. Now, in any circumstances this would be funny. But (I can’t describe in detail because it would give away my location and parish) the group that’s in charge of this church doesn’t just wear nice trousers and a button-down shirt. They wear full black cassocks (which you can look up in Wikipedia or wherever). Furthermore, he spent a number of years in the Marines. These two things combined meant that he was running around, crawling around on the ground, shooting people right and left, wrestling guns out of people’s hands, and all in an ankle-length robe–it was hilarious.

And now I’m off to see a production of the Sound of Music, for which my sister is a member of the pit orchestra. Ta!

So I have a question, probably for the GAPA(s) but if anyone knows it’d be helpful!

Today I played tennis/hung out with some friends, and one of them brought along a friend who is from england/has an english accent. I really really like accents, and so do most people I know, and I started wondering if there was a reason people like accents (other than their own).
At first I was thinking that it might be a biological/evolutionary reason–people who speak with a different/accent dialect are probably not related to you, which widens the gene pool/could possibly cut down chance of genetic diseases in offspring.

But though google I found an article on ethnocentrism (it’s only one page, so I’m not quite sure of the context but I think I get it. It’s also scanned form a book, so I can’t c+p but I’ll do my best) saying that more often people dislike accents because they’re unfamiliar. Like, people would be more willing to help/make sacrifices for people with the same accent because they’re more likely to be related or something. But it’s not as applicable now because of the vast population size, rather than small individual groups. I think. The passage cuts off in the middle.

ANYWAY I was wondering if anyone knew more about this! I know so many more people who like accents than don’t (can’t think of anyone who actively dislikes them, but I know a few people who don’t care either way), so I was just wondering if there was a reason or it’s just something random.

    Thanks!

*shrug* I dunno, but I know I’ve got a thing for accents–or certain accents, at least. Basically anytihng that’s an english speaking accent (as in, not english as a second language). Y’know, British, scottish, irish, welsh, australian. American accents are just boring. :/

You only think American accents are boring because you’ve grown up with them. Accents are only interesting if you don’t hear them frequently. If I hear Arabic-accented English, I barely any any attention to it, because especially here in Jordan I hear it all the time. If you lived in Britain long enough, you’d probably stop consciously noticing the different pronunciation. In other words, you can acclimatize yourself to an accent.
Personally, if the accent is too different and difficult to understand I’m to busy trying to understand what’s being said. That can make me angry, as I’d prefer easy communication. And that’s about as far as the hatred of accents goes.

Beyond that, Piggy and Jadestone’s theory makes sense to me.

I think that to an extent, accents different from one’s own are attractive–but not too different. It seems that it should be familiar yet distinct. For instance, a British accent is heard often enough in America that it can seem attractive. But, say, a Norwegian accent is rarely heard, so it’s too different. I think it’s basically a combination of “different = bigger gene pool” and “same = familiarity and safety”.

Let’s see what else might enter into the appealing-accent equation. I suspect that you’re more likely to find a foreign or regional accent attractive if you don’t associate it with people who pose a threat to you. Over time, it’s been interesting to watch accents switch from sinister to sexy as old enemies become new allies, or at least neutrals.

In general, it also seems to help if the accent is associated with people you consider at least your social equals. Poor immigrants, or people your country has conquered or otherwise subordinated, rarely qualify, I think. Nineteenth-century Americans didn’t much care for Irish immigrants and seem to have had little use for Irish accents (except in comedy); 21st-century Americans feel differently about Irish people and accents and have found different ones to dislike (and other previously unfashionable ones to like).

By the way, when I was training young adults in Scotland in the 1990s, the women in my classes all agreed that they loved, loved, loved Irish accents. Accents from County Kerry were particular favorites. (Interestingly, that’s the part of Ireland that is farthest from Scotland. Possibly material for more theorizing?)

They have quite an impressive collection of tektites in the meteorite display. I’ve always had a thing about tektites. They’re like the superheroes of geology. They were just ordinary Earth rocks, going about their business, until a meteor hit, turned them molten, and sent them flying into the upper atmosphere. When they came down, they were exotic-looking streamlined stones, sometimes jewelry-quality beautiful.

He was even lucky enough to maintain his mental capacity to the end, though he was 87. Anyway, the reason I’m bringing this up is that we’ve now found out what his will left to whom. It seems that each of his five children (and their families) will receive a lot of money. A lot. (Well, in my lower-middle-class eyes, anyway. About four times as much as I had expected.) So now my mom’s excited because she finally gets to get an iPod Touch. My dad’s already gotten himself a new GPS. And college will probably be more affordable now? Good things. Of course, we’re in the process of dividing my grandpa’s stuff, getting his house ready to be sold, etc., etc. That’ll all take some time.

World Cup — Spain deserved to win. They were the best team, although it would have been interesting if they had played Brazil. They deserved all their victories, especially this one. They had more possession, more chances, and less fouls. The Dutch just started fouling and fouling because they needed a way to stop the Spanish. It was despicable. Van Bommel is my least favorite player (yes, more so than Suarez) because he is the dirtiest player. He is lucky every game the referees don’t give him a red card. One of the annoucers said he could have gotten four in the first half.

okay, i agree that spain deserved to win, but first off spain vs paraguay? they played -terribly- in that game. they really didn’t have much more possession, and they had maybe bit fewer fouling. what they did have were a lot of fouls that didn’t get called. both teams were fouling a ton, the ref was definitely handing out way more cards to the dutch for fouls that he passed over from spain. i’m not saying i enjoyed all the fouling, but there really wasn’t that big a difference between how dirty the teams were playing.

the dutch actually played really well, and the teams were very evenly matched. spain was just barely the better team, and i think a lot of that credit has to go to casillas. the dutch had plenty of chances on the goal.

Wow, I feel like I haven’t been on here in awhile, even though I was just posting yesterday. *rubs head* (From my sister’s iPod Touch, which is a little different, but still.) Odd. Anyway…I just realized I hadn’t offered my two cents about the World Cup Final, so here it goes:

First of all, I was rooting for Spain, so I am happy that they pulled away with the win. I do think they deserved the victory – they pretty much controlled the game, and in the end, were simply the better team. Obviously both teams had some very good chances, but the Netherland’s players just couldn’t keep up with Spain’s ability to pass and control the ball. As for the ref, besides the one time when the Netherlands guy kicked the Spanish player in the chest which could have been a red card (In fact, if it hadn’t been a World Cup Final and it wasn’t so early in the game, it most definitely would have been.) I thought he did a pretty good job. Yes, there were a lot of yellow cards. Yes, it was a slow stop-and-start sort of game, which didn’t exactly make for a good game spectator-wise. But overall, most if not all of those plays were certainly deserving of fouls or yellow cards. The Netherland’s players were just playing that way, either from frustration or because that was their way of trying to stop the Spanish players who were better at controlling the ball and trying to prevent a breakaway which could lead into a goal. Obviously that couldn’t continue forever, which is why Spain got the win. I’m happy for them, and think they were deserving. I agree that Casillas was probably the best player for Spain, if he hadn’t saved that one breakaway which probably could have turned into a penalty kick if the Dutch player had fallen down – the Spanish player was practically dragging him down from behind, and it was a bad call by the ref – the Dutch might just have gotten away with the win.

Ebeth – in Spain vs. Paraguay, possession was about 60 – 40. As for fouls in the final, the referee was being fair/lenient with the Dutch. I already gave the Van Bommel example, and starr’s post mentions De Jong’s definite red card karate kick. The Dutch were fouling because they couldn’t keep up with the Spanish attack. Spain might have gotten one red card (two at the outside) if the referee had been harsher, but the Netherlands also could of had their total increase.

Bottom line: Spain played better and deserved to win. The Dutch just embarrassed themselves by fouling as much as they did.

    • Ebeth says:

I’m sure in some schools they could potentially affect admission a bit, but really schools just like to see that you took them. I think good scores (such as yours – congrats!) would probably have a positive effect on admission (wow you are so smart etc) but i don’t know that bad scores would have that huge a negative effect, since there could have been extenuating circumstances. I think it’s usually more about the fact that you took the harder classes, along with GPA and essays.

having AP credit is nice, but it’s not a huge thing imho. It gets you out of a few classes, but it really doesn’t have that huge an impact on the work you have to do or whether you can finish in four years or whatever.

11 – AP Chemistry, AP Biology
              12 – AP Physics B/C (I’m thinking C at this point)

On top of that, you can choose to have an extra class before school officially starts or after it officially ends–or both, with parental and administrative permission. That would mean nine classes a day, for a total of about nine and a half hours at school every day (counting passing periods and lunch).

However, one school in my district has a “block schedule”, which essentially means their classes are roughly twice as long and they take half as many–but they get a year-long class finished in one semester. I don’t think I’d like that schedule.
