Another popular homework replacement, fastershorter than National Novel-Writing Month but equally enticing to MBers.
Yay! Oh, thank you GAPAs!
I just signed up!
I’m going to convert Jillie’s Amazing Talking Journal into a screenplay, since it never got off the ground as a novel. I wish I could start writing now!
*jumping out of her seat with excitement* 17 days . . . 17 days . . .
I also plan to do NaNo this November. I think I like this sort of thing (even though I’ve never tried it before). It’ll be fun while I’m writing, and there’ll be endless opportunity for editing in July, August, and probably as far as September. I love to edit.
I am so excited I can’t even work on my current novel. I guess there are downsides. But I just had an idea, so ‘bye!
Is it in June or July? If it is, I can’t do it.
I don’t really have the inclination to do Script Frenzy, but I am planning to do NaNoWrMo. I’m going to boarding school next year, so NaNo should help me get through the homesickness that is bound to happen, even though I don’t really like where I live now. Ah, well…
So what is this? I’m new to National Novel Month thing…
I did NaNoWriMo, and this sounds awesome!! Especially since I’m currently taking a playwriting class. Squee!!
3- June.
I always wanted to write a screenplay! Actually, I wanted to adapt one of my favorite novels so that I had a bit more sympathy for the butchers of my favorite tales.
5- Script Frenzy is where you try to write either a stage play or a screen play. It has to be 20,000 words long, as opposed to NaNo’s 50,000. It’s all through the month of June. I’m new to NaNoWriMo too.
Even though I knew about it in November, I didn’t look for details, and besides, I thought, I have six novels going already, do I really need to start another just for this? By now I’ve narrowed it down to one really active novel, one dormant novel, and one in between. Plus lots of ideas, one of which I’m using for Script Frenzy.
I’m still excited, but luckily for me, real life has brought me back to earth, and I’m not simply waiting for June.
Oops, didn’t notice this therad when I posted on the random thread.
Anyway, I’m not going to be home for three weeks in June so I don’t know how far I’ll get. I have a lon plane ride to write on, though, so maybe I’ll come up with something.
There’s a site-thing I found where it tells you how to write in script format with the instructions in said format I found to be usefull. I’ll post it as a not-link if the GAPAs allow. I don’t remember what words i googled to get it a few months ago, unfortunatly.
www . oscars . org/nicholl/script . pdf
Maybe I’ll try this. I have more free time in June.
I think I’ll try this too, except I don’t get out of school til the 18th, but It’s mainly nothingness after the SOLs.
My little sister is signing up too! Amazing!
I want to do the junior one, not the normal one. It seems more my level, and one can set their own limit on that one. i just turned 13 in January, so I’m leaning toward fudging, Or just doing it on my own not through the program. Opinions?
12- If you want to do the junior one you should. I’m doing the main one because I’m thirteen, and also because I don’t want to set my own word count. I want to aspire to something absolutely huge because that’s kind of what its about, and because if it was anything less it would make me feel kind of like I was cheating. (No offense. That’s just how it would make me feel.)
I’m so excited!
I tried to do a NaNoWriMo but I only got to 15,000 or something like that. And I ran out of exciting ideas and began to have a major writers block. Man, I hate writers block.
14- Who doesn’t?
Does anyone have ideas for their plots?
Forgive me, I’m very excited and liable to post on here every 2 hours, whether I have something to say or not. Which I always will, or else I won’t post.
And that was contradictory. I’m going to shut up now.
I’m not sure what I want to do, but I was thinking I would do something with ghosts. But I’m not sure, since I’m going to do it with a friend (I’m going to be away for 2 weeks in June, so I really need to do it with someone else).
17- Sweet. I wanna try direct group writing, since after trying the RRRs I got all addicted to writing with people, but the only person to write with is my sister, and we . . . don’t get along very well. To say the least. So I can’t yet. But someday I’ll meet some other writers, and then maybe we can write a book together.
Can someone explain this to me?
This sounds like fun! I’m not sure about the script, but I’ll defiantly do the novel.
19- this is a relation to National Novel Writing Month, which is where you try to write a 50,000 word novel in the month of November. Except this, Script Frenzy, is where you try to write a 20,000 word screenplay or stage play in the month of June. It’s not a necessity that you put it on.
If you google “script frenzy” you’ll get their official website with an explanation and everything.
18 (Alice) – I’m sure you could do it with another MBer…just find each other on SF (*gasp*! sorry GAPAs)
I’m doing to do one with my sister, Taiwan Hippo Fan. And we’re going to write it about supernatural stuff like ghosts. People in “limbo” between life and after-life. Because I totally believe in ghosts.
22- What’s SF? I don’t do online things beside MB, though I’ve tried quite a few. (All with grown-ups, which quite dulled my appreciation of forums. I had an LJ account once, but it was boring.)
You lucky thing to get along well enough with your sister to do that! I get along with mine sometimes, but there’s a three-year age gap, and I’m a teenager . . . bad combo.
We’re supposed to be writing a Snow White story together, but we’re finding it hard to get past the prologue.
23 – SF = Script Frenzy.
I created a MuseBlog group/topic/forum thing on Script Frenzy. It’s under “Writing Groups & Clubs,” and it’s called “MuseBlog Frenzy-ers?”
((GAPAs – if I’m not allowed to say that, you can zap it))
16-how about Mostly Harmless for a plot?
25- Hey that sounds good, is that what you’re going to do? I’m converting JATJ (one of my ideas for a book) into script format.
I can’t get along with my sister long enough to agree on a name for the main character of our novel, much less write a script together.
I sure hope this thread picks up in June. Because so far it’s looking like a WOMBAT, I will attempt to revive it somewhat.
Of course, I requested it about two weeks to early, so what can you expect?
Anyway, my main character is woefully underdeveloped. I often make the main characters rather character-less and the interesting characters are the sidekicks. I’ve fixed one of them (though not to her advantage), but Jillie and Max are still rather boring.
Any tips?
And a question for the GAPAs: Have any of you ever tried this sort of thing?
26-I dunno. I might. It was just a suggestion.
I’d like to do something about an ancestral home with lots of secrets.
(28) Alice, I completed NaNoWriMo 2005 after learning about it from — where else? — MuseBlog. It was thrilling, I must admit. I’d never had the perseverance to complete a draft of anything that long.
In 2006 too many other obligations competed for my time, and I had to drop out after a few days.
When the email arrived announcing Script Frenzy, I remained confident I could safely ignore the event…even with a thread on MB there to remind me…even if I did slink over to the web site and read some of the resource material…
…until yesterday morning when I started thinking about a (nonfiction) piece I want to write and wondered: how might that work as a screenplay?
You can probably see where this story is headed.
Here is my miniature story summary so far:
Jeremy (Or other boy’s name, I’ve not decided) meets Esperanza Claudia Anastasia Trishia Millantando, a daughter of a wealthy buisnessman. She has many nicknames, which is part of the fun. (Espi, Anna, Stacy, Trish, Millie, Di,etc.) Jeremy is lower-class, but befriends Espi when they meet and are transported by magic carpet to Arabia. Sort of. I think the plot will not have much structure from that part on, and I might introduce characters that have nothin to do with anything, like giant talking bananas. Just a thought.
My main characters are underdeveloped, and I like Espi better than Jeremy (Whose name WILL be changed, I just have to decide what to.) I was thinking about changing it to a sort of un-play, where they bypass traditional story lines. No romance, and no prophecies (Though I was thinking of a funny scene in the middle of the desert where they find a plaque, read it, discover it’s a prophecy, then move on saying something along the lines of “Well, those never turn out well anyway.). I had a challenge from one of my friends to write a story with no romance, So I’m going to try. Of course that means no married couples and that means no families which means no kids so that kills the main characters… What do you think? (Once you get past the rambling portions of nothing) (Of which there are a lot) (I’m done now.) (Really)
31- Heehee. I see. So you’re doing this?
32- You’re not alone. My main characters are also underdeveloped. I can easily write a story with no romance. All of them are stories with no romance. I don’t go quite that extreme though. I just don’t put in any boys (or girls, except I’ve never done a story with a boy main character- maybe i should try that for NaNo) that are the right age for the main character. Or any of the side characters. In JATJ, Jillie and Max are brother and sister.
You know, you could just cut out any parts with parents. That would work.
I’m so excited! I can hardly wait!
Grr… I’m trying to come up with a plot, but it’s hard to do when an unnamed family member is playing a violent video game on the other computer. With the volume at maximum. I think I’ll go outside.
35- You have my full sympathy. My sister is at dance, so the house is silent, but it isn’t always, not nohow.
(33) Certainly looks that way. Just made it official this afternoon.
Yay! A GAPA Frenzy-er!
Why does it say in the description (of the thread) “Faster” than NaNoWriMo? How is it faster? Do you mean shorter?
Yes, that’s what we meant.
39- Well, you only have to write 75 words a day. It could be construed as faster.
Here’s a question for everyone that goes to school and participated in NaNo:
Did you finish? Was it possible?
This is seeming worse every day.
I think you mean 750 words a day. It isn’t too hard to reach that, only about an hour of writing, if you don’t edit. I wouldn’t edit, but as this is my first time my opinion counts for zip.
Oh, right. Oops. Apparently I forgot to calculate the extra zero.
I meant was NaNo possible. SF seems no harder than it did a few days ago, but NaNo is going to be during school, and I really don’t want to go to school. I like my freedom to write or read whenever I like. For NaNo you have to write about 1600 words a day, and that will be hard if all my time is taken up with school. Bleh.
SF= Sadistic Fetishism
Notice how the thread becomes quiet.
Um… When is Script Frenzy?
Good. In June. Right.
At last! People are here!
My characters are hopelessly underdeveloped. I’m hoping that if I have not-very-good characters that encounter fantastic and original adventures, no one will notice. I don’t generally pay much attention to emotional development in a film, so I’m just going to ignore it. Do you think my strategy will work? Or am I just turning a blind eye and no good will come of it?
Here are the descriptions of Jillie and Max:
Jillie: An average thirteen-year-old. Reddish-auburn medium-length hair, green-eyes, no freckles.
Personality: Doesn’t easily give into peer pressure, keeps a journal, somewhat stubborn but not especially, likes to make sarcastic remarks to Max.
Max: 11 years old, dirty blonde to light brown hair.
Personality: Likes to annoy his sister at all costs, otherwise fairly average. Doesn’t really believe in magic. Tends to tease Jillie by making references to her deepest darkest secrets.
32- You know, that kind of reminds me of Baron Munchhausen, in a way. I’m not sure why.
At the rate I’ve been writing, this should be a breeze. *Imagines finishing in two weeks*
Maybe not that much of a breeze. But maybe.
Even NaNo should be a breeze, except that then I’ll have school to deal with.
This is a dead thread. Already. I thought it would be a little longer before it died.
Oh well. Perhaps when June comes along it will pick up.
Alice, ready for tomorrow? Do you have a gameplan?
53- *gulp* Not really. All my plans for the beginning have sort of drifted away in the past three weeks.
I’m a bit nervous actually.
My friend inspired the idea for a play about the pledge of allegiance. The main plot is of a 13 year old girl named maria (in present day times) who refuses to say the pledge because she is not proud of America. it switches between Marias story and that of a 13 year old girl during the revolutionary war who watches her father and brother die to defend that very same flag (minus a couple stars.) Any way, Maria and her family sue the school for making Maria say it, and I’ll have to do a little more research on the amendments to figure out how the court will rule. It’s central theme is obviously patriotism, something which the friend who inspires this sorely lacks.
55- I lack patriotism too. And I refuse to say the Pledge of Allegiance.
55- I’m not proud of America at all. It doesn’t deserve patriotism.
56/57- Youre both quite similiar to my friend. Despite everything I love America. However, I think the God part in the pledge offends people and therefore could be taken out. I don’t want this to turn into a heated debate because I like you both but did you know that American people are statistically the most generous in the world? I hope thats not rude, I’m definitly not trying to sway your opinions, it’s just a fact.
Also, I’m just curious Why not?
Requiring people to say the pledge in school is unconstitutional. See West Virginia State Board of Education vs. Barnette.
Thanks! That just saved me a bit of research. Well, anyway my play won’t be in favor of patriotism neccesarily, but it will show how hard people have worked to make this country one of the most succesful in the world. You can’t argue with that.
This is what i say:
And to the republic, for which it stands, one nation, undivided, indivisible, with liberty and justice for all.
I skip the begenning, so i’m not pledging anything.
I agree that people really did work hard for America and it’s admirable. It’s not so much America that I dislike as government/people (in general, not individually). Anywhere. And I also dislike the fact that we’re a really ignorant country compared to others and we’ve started a lot of wars.
Other than that, America’s fine. And I won’t say the pledge of allegiance because it’s not true. I don’t pledge allegiance to anyone.
And I hope that sounded civil, because I am feeling perfectly civil and not at all mad.
It sounded perfectly civil in my opinion. I say the pledge because I simply am loyal to America and it’s values. No country is ever perfect, and I am fully accepting that America is not. I’ disagree with many parts of our goverment. But do I believe in freedom for everyone, democracy, the right to free speech and religion? Yes, I do. And thats what I’m pledging to. Now, perhaps we should end this subject, its off topic, and I really, really don’t want to offend anyone.
I don’t say the pledge for two main reasons:
1. It’s unconstitutional to mandate it in public schools, and I prefer not to go along with unconstitutional laws.
2. It’s a PLEDGE, a legal, binding agreement, and saying it over and over every single day just cheapens its value.
Thank You all for adding your input because it will help me define Maria’s character to even more. It was hard for me to sympathize with her because I disagreed with her stance so this has actually helped tremendously!
It’s today! Ahhhhhhhhhhhelpme! I’m scared.
Argh! Forget the special formatting! I don’t care! I’m just going to write it like I know how.
Oh god, I don’t even know what the opening scene is going to be like.
About 16 students are sitting in a classroom. Some are in groups talking while others are writing something or reading silently. One girl named Maria is flipping through a magazine.
Mrs. Luft : All right now everybody stop what you’re doing. Its time to say the pledge.
Students rise and say the American pledge with a hand over their hearts and facing the flag on the wall. Maria remains seated and doesn’t look up from her magazine. As the students finish, the teacher spies Maria.
Mrs. Luft : Maria what is that your reading?
Maria: National Geographic, Mrs. Luft.
Mrs. Luft: And may I inquire as to what article had you so interested?
Maria: It was about the Aztecs. Actually it was fairly boring.
Mrs. Luft has gradually shifted toward Maria’s desk and is now right next to her.
Mrs. Luft: Maria, you missed saying the American pledge.
Maria: Oh….
Maria has a guilty look on her face.
Mrs. Luft: Please join me in the hall.
They move away to where the other students can’t hear them.
Mrs. Luft: You’re not in trouble. I just want you to realize how important the pledge is. I haven’t seen you say it in the two weeks you’ve been my student. At first I thought you were just to caught up in whatever it was that you were doing to notice
Maria: That’s not the reason Mrs. Luft. I don’t ever say it becau-
The school bell rings. Mrs. Luft puts a hand on Maria’s shoulder and smiles.
Mrs.Luft: I know you understand. Now you don’t want to be late to your next class.
Maria and the other students leave the classroom.
It’s the following day in class. Again Maria does not say the pledge.
Mrs.Luft: Maria, My I ask why you did not say the pledge again today?
Maria: Because….
Mrs.Luft: yes…?
Maria: Because I’m not proud of America! Look at all of our wars and our presidents! And I don’t pledge anything! That’s a promise and why do I have to renew that promise everyday? America doesn’t deserve my promise, and neither does a piece of nylon!
Another student, named Claire, stands up.
Claire: You should be ashamed of yourself Maria! My father is in Iraq fighting right now so cowards like you can be safe! If you hate America so much than why don’t you go live in Cuba where they have a dictator and you could be beaten just for saying your beliefs? So, Shut up because you’ve got it made!
Mrs. Luft: Everyone that’s quite enough!
The whole class starts yelling at one another. Another student named Elsie rises.
Elsie: You can’t make her say anything it’s against the law!
Claire and several other students glare at Maria and Elsie
Claire: Well, why wouldn’t you want to say it?
Now that Script Frenzy is officially underway, there’s a new thread to kick off the event.
They wouldn’t let me post it on there!
It’s fine to repost it on the other thread if you like, since it’s at the end of this one.
All right I’ll try it agian. Thank You!
