The GAPAs have been conferring amongst themselves. In typically all-embracing GAPA style, we’ve decided to hold two Kokonventions: a big one on August 15, and a smaller one on August 10 for those who can’t make the other one.
We’re still working on a program of events for each. Right now, the main difference is the August 10 will have three GAPAs present (Rosanne, Robert, and Rebecca), whereas August 15 will have just two (no Rosanne, alas).

2 – Same here. Unfortunantly I live in California, not the Northwestern United States, and for the same reasons as Dotty-kay in post 1 I don’t think I could go to Washington state.

In reply to one of the last posts on the previous thread, 145 I think-
this is something i’ve been hearing a lot lately, and am starting to get rather annoyed by. People keep saying things that are basically “you made it to the national spelling bee. Therefore, you will do well in the national spelling bee.” This is, of course, very bad logic, since at the nationals (one week! aaaaaah!) I will be competing aginst 285 other kids who all also made it to the national spelling bee, so the fact that I did doesn’t set me above any of them. In fact, being a first-timer there who studies the amount I do puts me pretty low compared to all the returners, which is why I say I probably won’t do particularly well. And I don’t really care, so no one needs to try to convince me that I will do better than I say. it’s realistic, and it doesn’t bother me. I just wish others would stop expecting me to do better than I probably will, because I feel like i’m going to be disappointing them if I do badly even if I’m not disappointing myself because I knew to expect it, but if you all don’t then I will be disappointing you, which is why I want everyone to understand that I probably won’t.
It’s fine with my dad, but my mom is EXTREMELY opposed to it. And I mean EXTREMELY opposed. Quoting her, “I am NOT paying 600 dollars for you to go meet some PEOPLE. How about paying our MORTGAGE? How about we pay our CREDIT CARD BILLS? No!” Eek. My dad said he’d talk to her, but she is a stubborn mommie!

OK, I know my mom hasn’t emailed you yet, Gapas, but we checked the calender again and I can come to the one on the 10th. I’ll remind her to email you tomorrow, but she already gave me permission to go.
10-I understand what you’re saying, but I don’t think it works for me. Thinking that I will do well doesn’t improve my performance, if anything I do worse. I have been to the regional bee 4 times. The time I was most confident that I would win was my first time there in 5th grade. I refused to even study for it because I was sure that I was a good speller and thus didn’t need to study. I went out in the second round, and only survived until then because I was lucky in round 1. The following three years I studied more, and didn’t expect to win. The last two years I knew I might have a chance, but I also reminded myself that there was so much luck that I couldn’t be sure. This year, with that mindset, I finally won it. So clearly, realistic works best for me.
Also, if I expect to do well, there are two possibilities: either I do as well as i thought and I’m happy but not particularly surprised, or I don’t do as well as I had hoped and am extremely disappointed. The latter would be more likely, and I want toavoid that.
If I keep my expectations low, on the other hand, then either I will get what I expected and not be particularly disappointed because I knew it would happen, or I will do better than I expected and be extremely happy. So, overall, I will almost definitely do better and be happier with the outcome if I remain realistic.
YAY because I started planning for this on the old kokonvention threads, I can come to EITHER ONE!!! OPTIONS!!!

The details of what time to start, where to meet, and what all we might do are still under discussion.
I work at the AAAS building on the northwest corner of 12th and H Streets, NW, so we’ll want to end up there eventually. But I thought it might make sense to assemble a few blocks away, at the Barnes & Noble store at 12th & E Streets. There’s a cafe upstairs and books everywhere, so if people show up at slightly different times the ones who wait will have something to do.
Good idea. I don’t know if I’ll even be able to come, I mentioned it to my parenal units, but all they did was launch into some unrelated disscussion…. Oh well….. We’ll see. I REALLY hope I can come though.

(39) Rosanne and Rebecca and I are still working out the details, but we’d like to make the two Kokonventions different. Because Rosanne won’t be around on the 15th, for example, she’ll have more to do on the 10th. One thing they’ll have in common is that everybody gets to see where I work.
I want to come! But 9:46 in the morning would be the worst time in the world for me. I’d have to leave at about 4:00 pm (your time) The day before! Which works out as… Midnight my time. The day before. Forget it.

Nope. When I was asking my parents I was told that the 10th was probably okay, and that the 15th was. So I’m probably able to go both days. I don’t have any ideas about time, but I think that it would be a good idea to have it as a multi-day thing, so that people didn’t have to come all the way for just one day.
Some people are so hard to please. We’d RATHER have a Muse Academy where you could all enroll and stay for years and years. For now, though, I’m afraid a day is the best we can do.
Of course, you and your parents are welcome to stay in Washington for as long as you like. But if you survive one day of August heat here, I suspect you’ll be pretty eager to get out of town. It’s madness, I tell you, madness.

I, surprisingly enough, might be able to come to the August 10th one.
It depends. There aren’t any trains or planes that are significantly faster than driving. And it’s a six hour drive. And I probably have marching band until nine the night before. But, if I can convince a parent to overcome all that, I can go. If we drive, I may even try to bring someone else from the area, but that’s an incredibly unlikely “if”. If I can go I’ll get a parent to email. August 15 is completely taken over by marching band, though, so the 10th is better. But I’ll probably be late. I hope this post isn’t too disorganized.
That doesn’t work, does it? We’d have to post our parent’s e-mail address, and we wouldn’t be allowed to do that. We have our own e-mails in the e-mail boxes. We could forward them, but I’ve have to learn how. I would know, but I have great contempt for chain letters.

ETA returns!!! Hello again! I know at least one person remembers me, lol. It has been a long time since I’ve been here, gah! I’ve missed the Museblog! To make a long story short, my previously ideal “cottage school” fell under new management (a bunch of really evil DIRPs) at the beginning of last school year. The DIRPs decided that it would be good for us to have more classes. Thirteen, to be exact. With that crazy amount of homework and a series of computer troubles, I just haven’t had the free time I did last year. Now that it’s summer I’m really hoping to have more time for the Museblog again!
Back to the topic! Unfortunately, this summer won’t be much less busy than last school year. I haven’t presented the Kokonvention to my parents yet, but considering that they’d have to drive me to D.C, I have a feeling they’ll say no. I go back to school on the 14th, so if I can come, it’ll have to be on the 10th. Wish me luck and maybe they will say yes after all!

How does one identify themselves as a museblogger to other mmusebloggers in a bookstore full of people? HPB stickers or some other sign that only a muser would recognize? Because I don’t know any other musebloggers in person, nor would I recognize any of the GAPAs. Just a question that’s been confusing me. (don’t worry, it’s not hard to confuse me…)

I think what we’re going to do, if it’s a nice day, is park at a place called Union Station and walk over, if it’s possible. So if we’re going to do that, we would have to get up early enough to get to the station and then do the walking.

166- Uh, good luck with that. You’ll probably have to walk like a mile and a half through the unnavigatable (literally, the city was built to be hard to invade) streets of D.C. You might want to take the metro, but you’d still have to find the actual store.
The store is on 12th Street, just a block or two south of the Metro Center subway station depending on which escalator you take. Just get on our e-mail list (gapa @ musefanpage.com), and we’ll make sure you get full instructions.
Unfortunately, the best downtown pie restaurant, Reeve’s, lost its lease and closed its doors just last Friday. It’s a shame. It had been in business since 1889 (that’s not a typo: 118 years), and some of the waitresses must have worked there almost that long. Glacially slow service, but cherry pie to die for. And peach… I wish they could have held on until August.
You might be surprised to find that I have very “refined” tastebuds (as my mom says) so this means I probably will be eating almost nothing but bread when we go out to eat. And don’t you try to get me to eat more, because trust me, it doesn’t work. In other words, I;m the second pickiest eater in the world (the universe I’m not so sure about.)

188 – THF would love that! We have an accordion too, but it’s REALLY heavy. I love transposition and arrangements, so if I have a list of musical instruments that want to play, I could definitely write and arrange several pieces muse-related. I have some lyrics for muse songs written, and I could write songs for them. *starts thinking..hmm…* Should I write it in a mode? Maybe phrygian mode. That sounds kind of Spanish, but it might work. Actually, I like the Mixolydian mode. What do you think? I guess I’ll write one in major/minor, and another in a mode. I have a few months, so I’ll have enough time, right? I’ve never lost anything on the Metro except umbrellas, and that’s because I leave them on the seat when I leave. (I do that a lot.) I think your violins and flutes will be fine. What I wouldn’t do is leave them in plain view in a car parked on the street.

I’d agree that the main problem on the Metro is forgetting things.
Once I fell asleep and left behind a dress I’d just bought and another time forgot a briefcase that contained all the notes and drafts for a novel I was writing (in pre-computer days).
As for umbrellas — I decided to be proactive and quit buying them.
THF’s definitely bringing her violin. She definitely will not forget it, and if someone tries to take it from her…she can set her Hot Pink Bunnies on them. So ha.

My mom was the one who practically made me go on MB. Not to make it seem bad, but she was the one who looked it up (after I said something about it that I read in the mag) and sent me the link. So I said, Okay, what the heck, and signed up. It was fun but then after a while I decided it was kind of boring, so stopped. Then a few weeks later I decided I was bored and clicked on the link. After that, I have come on . . . frequently, to say the least.
I came because of Monty’s letter (just like hundreds of other people…though not many stayed), which had the link to the website. I posted a few times, using an email address which was real, but I made it just to use for “foreign” websites and such. I pointless-posted a lot (but that was during the time where there weren’t any PoPoPo, and it wasn’t really that bad), and I just kind of explored.
I think I told my parents after about a week, describing the wonders and amazingness of MuseBlog. Then about a month later, my sister (THF) “joined” as well. I’ve been coming just about every day (except when I go away, etc..) since March 10th, 2006, and, well, yeah…
Oh, and by the way, I’m leaving for Mexico on the 20th and not coming back until July 4th…that’s 2 weeks. What is going to happen to the story then?

It turns out THF hasn’t played “Ashokan Farewell,” but she is starting to learn it, and should definitely be able to play it by the Kokonvention. I’ll learn the piano part, too, if you need an accompanist. Unless Robert is playing it, in which case, I’ll probably learn it anyway, because then I can accompany THF other times.

(257) We’re meeting in a bookstore, but the latest plans are to have lunch at the National Press Club. There are two restaurants there. The affordable one has a fairly traditional menu (see http://npc.press.org/restaurants/RSLunch.pdf) including a buffet, but there are rolls and salads and boiled vegetables and other odds and ends. If vegans don’t eat whipped cream, I’m sure you could order apple pie without it.

My mom was thinking we could all stay in the same place. I think the night before the Kokonvention we’re staying at one of my mom’s cousins’ houses, and then the rest of the time we’re going to be in a hotel type place. We were going to stay with my uncle and his family, but they are packing up and moving to Croatia, and they’re renting out their house.
This probably isn’t allowed, because the GAPAs said you needed a parent/guardian with you, but if it is, my mom said that any musers who can make it to Pittsburgh can come with us (like, in our car – we’ll drive you) to the Kokonvention. But that’s probably not allowed, so nevermind…

I can’t be vegetarian or vegan for that matter, because I’ll die.
I’m not even kidding. I eat so little types of food that if I cut meat out of the picture, well… no more Capricious. Maybe when I’m older and have taken a liking to more fruits… fine! And vegetables. Phhht.
I was a little angry when those two little girls sent in the letter telling all the musers how easy it is to be vegan! That was in the vegetarianism issue by the way.
The reason I was angry was because they had been vegans their whole lives, and had never tasted meat. They don’t know how hard it is to stop!
285- I won’t even go into how mad that letter made me, for pretty much the same reasons. But actually, one of them was a boy. (If we’re talking about the same letter. We might not be.)
186- Oh yeah… I remember. Her and her little brother. They where sitting in a little homemade tent holding hamsters.
287- Guinea pigs, actually. (Why do I even care?) She said that wool hurts animals? How so? I mean, you might clip them with the shears by accident, but it doesn’t hurt animals any more then shaving would hurt a man.
288- I know. I can understand being a vegetarian, but being vegan really is sort of pointless, because those things (well some, but..) don’t hurt the animals anyways!
289- Eggs and milk, depending on what brand, but other than that, I don’t really think it needs to be that extreme.
Oh, and I heard somewhere that soy production is actually really bad for a lot of people in China or wherever they produce soy.
291- Just one more reason! My friends will all point to something made of wool and go “aawwww… poor sheep!” and I’m like “Uh, guys?”
It’s sorta funny, but also sorta sad when you think about it. (Sad for them, not the sheep.)

Couldja MOVE this to the vegetarian thread please??? BOY!
Just a note: in many places the sheep are too warm in the summer with wool coats and they would overheat.
294- Indeed. Have you ever seen a sheep that has never been sheared? (Ours shed of their own accord.) They are so woolly it’s surprising they can walk!

285~ (Cappy) I’m very sorry if I’ve offended anyone…. And about people being vegan, I have been a vegan for my entire life. I have only eaten meat once, and I don’t even remember it. I don’t find it hard to be a vegan, but it’s a lifestyle I’ve been raised with, and I it’s what I know. For me, I would probably have a hard time eating meat now. And in case you’re thinking that I go around telling people that they should share the exact same veiws as I do, I don’t.
And to everyone else who is saying that being vegan is, “Pointless, because those things don’t really hurt the animals..” Well, I happen to have an uncle who is a dairy farmer, and his farm is one of the lowest bacteria counts in the state and he keeps his cows for twice as long as most other dairy farmers. The cow’s lives are nothing but standing on concrete for their entire life. They never go outside.
In case you were wondering, I am not a vegan because of the “look at the poor critters” objetive. My mother had very little mony when she moved away from home and she couldn’t afford the meat. After she met and married my Dad, they decided to become vegan for health and environmental issues. We (as a family) use wool, leather, silk and honey. (My Dad is a beekeeper!) Some because we do living history, and those materials are nessisary to having correct clothes, etc. and some because those materials simply are very useful and there is no decent “vegan alternitive”.
So sorry this isn’t in the veggie’s thread, but I thought I’d explain where I was coming from. And I know it was pretty long too, oops…

299- I don’t think you were the problem. Not for me, at any rate, it was just those kids who wrote in saying that everyone else should go vegan too. As for the whole “doesn’t hurt the animals” debate, I know that dairy and eggs hurt the animals, it’s just the wool that seemed rather ridiculous.
Maybe a new thread would get more attention…

The sheep that are used for wool are often treated terribly. After their wool isn’t good enough anymore, they are sold to slaughterhouses.
Can we have a Northeastern MBers Yearning for a Kokonvention of Their Own? I’m going to most likely be in Michigan during those times actually. Although if that plan falls through I might be able to run away on a bus if I can get a bus to NYC and from there to Washington. My parents almost definitely wouldn’t let me though.

(307) As for hotels — there is no “official” Kokonvention hotel, but I’ll be happy to recommend some if you need them. The sine qua non is good air conditioning.

The good news is that we will have an NPR tour on the 15th.
