Life, the universe, pies, hot-pink bunnies, world domination, and everything
KaiYves may explain.

To quote KaiYves on the topic:
I think that MB should hold a virtual Yuri’s Night party in April of 2011. Seeing how much resistance there was to a Moon Landing Day party in the summer, I realize a late March-early April party is never going to be approved unless it’s a one-time thing that never happens again. Thus, as this year is the 50th anniversary of Yuri Gagarin’s flight, I feel it should be the one time this party takes place.
IMPORTANT: all ideas which follow are subject to suggestion, criticism, change, and evolution and none should be considered to be set in stone…
Who: Any MuseBloggers who wish to attend. If you wish to assume the persona of a technician, astronaut, or spy or just create some sort of backstory for yourself, you’re welcome, but it’s not mandatory.
When: March 20th to April 17th, 2011.
Where: On the Yuri’s Night thread. Within the classic Muse Academy ballroom, decorated to resemble a room aboard Space Station Odyssey in all ways possible.
Food: TBD
Décor: 2001: A Space Odyssey is the general reference. 2011 as seen by 1961. A large ballroom entered through sliding doors in the Star Trek fashion. Models and framed photographs showing the highlights of spaceflight and SF in the past 50 years decorate the room. (Yes, lots of gorgeous Hubble shots) “In-storyâ€, we are aboard a rotating space station, and large “windows†(Perhaps floor-to-ceiling) will show the rest of the station, the Earth below, the moon and stars, and every now and then, shuttles and cargo ships flying up to dock with the station. (The windows being just TV screens and all of this being stock footage or CGI.) Perhaps announcements over a PA periodically to announce the “dockingsâ€.
Music: A live band, playing a mix of 60s classics, New Age electronica, and any other favorites requested. Any MBer who wishes to drop in and play with the band may.
Dress: Futuristic formal. Black suits and ties, glow-in-the-dark dresses, neatly pressed jumpsuits, shirtsleeves with pocket protectors and skinny ties, Starfleet dress uniform, and the like. Go for a 60s feel, but nothing too hippie.
The goings-on: To celebrate the 50th anniversary of Yuri Gagarin’s pioneering spaceflight, and the completion of Space Station Odyssey, various distinguished employees from the space agencies of the world have been invited to enjoy a civilized evening of dancing, music, intelligent conversation, and Earthwatching. (Binoculars provided at windows by wungs.) But keep on your toes, as befits the anniversary of such a prominent Cold War event, espionage and intrigue are in the air…
Does anyone have the Failed Futurelands issue of Muse? If so, does it have any information about 2011 as seen by 1961?
I’d buy it myself to see, but I lack money, unfortunately.
I don’t have it, but the website Tales of Future Past is a good place for ideas, especially the “Space Stations” section.
*is interested* Why was there resistance to a Moon Landing Day party?
Because the May Day Party was seen to occupy the “Summer” portion of the social calendar, and true summer is when a lot of people are away at camp or on vacation and thus unable to post.
When I saw this in the “Recent Posts” area, I screamed and jumped up and down. I always hoped this would materialize, but it still seemed somehow inconceivable that a project of mine could take that leap from conception to reality.
Thank you. Thank you all so much. *Hugs and cries*
Now, let’s go out there and make this happen.
So, for one thing, I vote that the ongoing MuseBlog night the party occurs will be clear and warm, and the ceiling will be transparent so we can all see the stars.
This is Muse Academy isn’t it?. (Is it Muse Academy? I suppose we’ll have to ask the GAPAs.) Why not just put the party on an actual space station?
I think it’s Muse Academy…
Just want to keep this alive…
KaiYves, I’m going to throw some suggestions in here. We’ve only got until Sunday to plan! Sorry I didn’t hop on sooner.
We can both make lists of things we want for food. Pretty much everything else seems ok with maybe a few tweaks. :] I’ll be back in a little bit to post my food ideas. (Unfortunately I won’t be on much during the first week because of taekwondo and school, but I’ll be sure to stop in and after that week I’ll have a better schedule)
It seems like we’ve mostly got the decorations planned. I like the idea of having screens and photos of space.
I recall from my first Muse Ball that there is a balcony/garden thing. I think that those of us with telescopes should consider lending them for the night and placing them in different areas of the garden.
When dinner is over and the dancing starts, can we turn the lights really low and have a big moon that lights up hanging from the ceiling? (Do we have a chandelier? If so, we can just make a shell to put around it)
What kind of food should we have?
Can we get silver or black helium balloons and hang some of the serving plates from them so they can float around? (Maybe just have fruit bowls or just pitchers of drinks floating around. If we had all of the food floating the whole room would be too full of balloons)
Remind me, please: when does the party begin?
I suggested March 20th, so as to have a good solid three weeks encompassing April 12th.
According to Ambystoma’s quote of KaiYves, it starts on March 20. I think that if KaiYves is willing to change it we could make it later though. It depends how much Kai can be on this weekend to help plan, since it is her (en’s?) idea. It seems like not many people are aware of this right now. I’m sure if we make the thread people will just show up, but I think that it would be good for people to prepare a bit.
Kai, what do you think?
Will the H&H be catering? Will the wungs be present to help? For my purposes, I’m assuming presence of wungs.
I’ve been thinking about the food, and I seem to be on an asian streak now. I need better ideas, but here are some I’ve had so far:
Appetizers:
Fruit, Steamed dough (little soft bread things, Chinese), bread, soup, (Should we have more?)
Maybe if we do the balloon idea just the appetizers can be done by ballon while everyone is walking around at the beginning, and when all the food is gone the balloons and plates will float up. The wungs can come out with hooks to grab the strings and take them away.
Entrees:
Pasta, Salmon/crab/veggie/whatever else puffs (little dough balls with stuffing, kind of like dumplings), sushi…
Desserts:
Cookies, flavored ice, chocolate fountain…
I’m not good at thinking of essentially fancy foods, but I feel like we should pick delicious things and then just make them look fancy.
I think little things to nibble on are good- definitely have some bruschetta, too.
And yes, this all will be catered by the H&H, or, as it’s known in Apollopunk, Piggy’s Unhappy Bottom Riding Club.
I like the idea of silver and black helium balloons and the telescopes in the rooftop garden. Maybe we could also put up statues of planets in the garden, some of which could be at the centers of fountains?
Ahh Kai posted while I was writing. Now she might be posting again while I am writing.
8.1.2: We could probably have many of the same desserts as are on the H&H menu, as they’re delicious and fancy and already thhought of. Also, I agree with everything you said, though I’d prefer not to extend the deadline if at all possible.
8.2: Yes, let’s do that! It’s a great idea! We should include all of them. People still thought Pluto was a planet at the time, though (well, actually, many still do, but I’ve never understood why), so I suppose we’ll have to include it.
And we could make it a bit of a rocket garden, too.
Re: food-
We could have foods that use scientific equipment for cooking, like an aspirator, gelatin…. Make it really retro futuristic!
Picture this- A gelatin bubble that, when you break its shell, foam under pressure bubbles out and forms puffin puffs.
Astronaut puffin puffs? That is wrong in so many ways.
You do, however, bring up the valid point that we should have some dehydrated food- dried cinnamon apple slices are actually really, really good, and astronaut ice cream seems appropriate.
What would puffin puffs taste like? Or is is a surprise…?
There are various opinions about that. Here’s a little history:

Hmmm.
They sound… interesting. Why not?
Having the drinks come from a fancy machine with lots of tubing and chemical equipment would be cool.
I think we should have robots do the serving. Either they are the fancy machine or they bring drinks form the fancy machine to people on the dance floor. Like a Roomba, except it doesn’t vacuum clean. Though we should have something to take care of any accidental spills too.
I think this is good then. :]
Maybe we can get started later in the day tomorrow. I think we’ve planned pretty much everything we need if you guys approve of the food. :]
I suppose it’s not a MuseBall without puffin puffs…
Okay, so I guess the only element that hasn’t been debated is the role-playing element with the “personas” and the space station metaplot. What do you guys think about that?
I really like that idea. Roleplay could add a nice, unique element to the party. I also still think that we could just hold the party on an actual space station. The rooftop garden might be a little difficult, but I’m sure the wungs will manage it somehow. (and it would be REALLY amazing if they did)
We could have the rooftop garden be a sort of greenhouse-type relaxation place with a wonderfully retro-futuristic dome for a roof through which you could see the Earth and stars and everything. So that way, it could be on the space station and up a stairway from the party room and about as “outside” as you can have plants in space.
The dome could be really big, though, so you didn’t feel like you were inside- it’s just like a regular party at the rooftop garden except that when you look up, you can see the dome high above you, and beyond that, outer space.
It could be either a fishbowl-type dome or a geodesic one, both would be retro, but I lean towards geodesic, because it’d be really cool to look up and be able to *just* see the structure of the panels where they join together above your head.
Music:
We have to use the 2001: A Space Odyssey soundtrack.
Brass: BAM! BAM! BAM! BAM- BAM!
(Timpani: Bam-bam-bam-bam-bam-bam X large number)

Also Sprach Zarathustra, how I love thee.
For music, how about The Planets by Gustav Holst?
I think the geodesic dome sounds good. :]
The music can just come in along with the guests. People can recommend stuff and the hosts can just put up lists for the band as the night goes along.
Are we starting tonight?
Okay, so the plans as they now stand:
Who: Any MuseBloggers who wish to attend. If you wish to assume the persona of a technician, astronaut, or spy or just create some sort of backstory for yourself, you’re welcome, but it’s not mandatory.
When: March 21st to April 17th, 2011.
Where: On the Yuri’s Night thread. Aboard Space Station Odyssey.
Food:
-In general: Foods that use scientific equipment for cooking, like an aspirator, gelatin… freeze-dried “astronaut” foods. (Not that we don’t have gravity, it’s just traditional.)
-Appetizers:
Fruit, Steamed dough (little soft bread things, Chinese), bread, soup, bruschetta.
-Entrees:
Pasta, Salmon/crab/veggie/whatever else puffs (little dough balls with stuffing, kind of like dumplings), puffin puffs sushi…
-Desserts:
Cookies, flavored ice, gelato, astronaut ice cream, chocolate fountain…
-Drinks:
Made by a machine featuring lots of chemical equipment and tubing.
-Miscellany:
Food and drinks served by robots. All catering courtesy of Piggy’s Happy Bottom Riding Club. (AKA the Hare and Hedgepig)
Décor: 2001: A Space Odyssey is the general reference. 2011 as seen by 1961.
– The Ballroom: A large ballroom entered through sliding doors in the Star Trek fashion. Models and framed photographs showing the highlights of spaceflight and SF in the past 50 years decorate the room. (Yes, lots of gorgeous Hubble shots) We are aboard a rotating space station, and large floor-to-ceiling “windows†will show the rest of the station, the Earth below, the moon and stars, and every now and then, shuttles and cargo ships flying up to dock with the station. Periodically, there will be announcements over a PA system to announce the “dockingsâ€.
– The Rooftop Garden/The Pleasure Dome: Like the regular rooftop garden, only beneath an immense geodesic dome through which outer space can be seen. There are ornamental plantings, fountains containing statues of the planets, and models of rockets at various fractions of their actual size to stroll amongst. Telescopes are set up to allow guests to view various celestial objects they may find interesting- all are computer controlled, just punch in what you want to see and the scope will orient itself.
Music: A live band, playing a mix of 60s classics, New Age electronica, and any other favorites requested. Any MBer who wishes to drop in and play with the band may. Some specific music featured will include Holst’s The Planets and the music from 2001: A Space Odyssey.
Persona:
Name: Sergei Yakovlevich Kerimov (mixing of 3 names important to the USSR at the point of Yuri’s flight)
Backstory: A technician and dreamer who has dreamed of sending man into space forever. Ever since he first looked at the stars, he knew that some day, someone would set foot on another planet. He knows much about the capsule, and his main work was on the life support. Some would say that he knows too much about the life support, especially with espionage and intrigue…
Outfit: His work clothes, though formal by futuristic standards. The required goggles (it is, after all, punkpunk.) and a rolled up shirt with a few burns and grease stains.
Personality: Genial, and much too willing to talk about his work.
(Okay, I see the Korolev shout-out, who are the other two?)
Kerim Kerimov- Military supervisor
Okay, and the middle name I mischose… It should be Khrushchev, leader of the Communist Party in 1961.
Enc:
Russian middle names are “patronymics” based on the name of the bearer’s father according to a grammatical formula. For example, if I were Russian, I’d be Robert Robertovich, because my father was named Robert, too. If I had a sister named (say) Tatyana, she’d be Tatyana Robertovna. “Khrushchev” is not an option, I’m afraid.
Ah…
Well, then ignore the middle name and erase it from existence.
What’s “son of Nikita”? He could use that.
Nikitich, if his father was named Nikita.
Let me just take a moment to appreciate Enc’s choice of “punkpunk” as an adjective.
…this is why I proposed to you, Enc.
SFTDP
I’m working on creating a GIMP picture of the scenery.
Persona:
Name: Dr. Ariana Robertson
Backstory: An engineer and astronaut who helped in the design of the space station. She read SF comics as a child and was determined to some day make it into space herself. Recently, she’s become involved in a solar sailing project, and is trying to convince Director Jangs, the head of IASED (International Agency for Space Exploration and Development) to allow their team to use the station as a testbed. He’s waiting to make sure the station functions as expected before making his verdict, so she’s under some pressure to make sure everything at the party goes smoothly.
Outfit: IASED uniform- blue pants with multiple pockets, black turtleneck top, blue flight jacket with mission patches and more pockets. Silver fingerless gloves.
Personality: Friendly, but focused. Worried that something will go wrong in front of Director Jangs.
