Suggestion Box, v. 2007.1

Prarilius Canix suggested we needed a new Suggestion Box. The last one was in October. Submit your ideas for new threads or whatever else comes to mind.

    Cool!

How about a thread about sailing, tallships, and everything to do with water.

And this sounds like a good place to say, my birthday is on August 21. I will be turning 14.

  2. Beavo the Great says:

We need a thread about the MBers that we know. I know it will take forever to load, but still.

And, I’ve been begging to have the ‘Hot Topic’ in post 0 (like the Incredible Morphing Chamelion) and in the Polling Place there should be a list of polls.

    Pie 0
    Squid 0
  3. Rebecca Lasley (Administrator) says:

    (2) The IMCT is designed to stick to a single subject for an extended period; Hot Topics is not. Sometimes comments will cluster around a single topic for awhile, but other times it changes from post to post. It’s not practical — or necessarily desirable — to confine it to a single issue.

The Polling Place is simply too mercurial. Polls morph into other polls; people change questions to suit themselves. In other words, GAPAs might go on strike if they were expected to keep those up to date.

As for your thread request, if you mean a list of current MBers, Alice compiled one on June Jelly, Part 2. If you mean something else, please explain.

https://musefanpage.com/blog/?p=921/comment#=29 I hate it when I’m ignored. Crazy list thread, where we keep making all sorts of lists…. We could also make lists of previous lists, and eventually we would have lists about lists that are lists of lists. Pleeeeaaassssseeeeeee!!!!!!!!!!

    Pie 0
    Squid 0
  44. Rebecca Lasley (Administrator) says:

    (43) Just because you haven’t been answered, doesn’t mean you have been ignored.

By the way, the proper syntax for links to comments is #comment-[number of comment]. That is, your link should read:

    Pie 0
    Squid 0
  45. Koko du Pelle says:

44-Well, yeah, but usually I assume I’m being ignored. Logically, if I’m not answered, and the thread isn’t put up, it would be safe to assume I’ve been ignored. If my request is rejected, you should say so, and if you don’t want to make that thread yet, you should also say so, so you should always answer unless you’re putting up the thread! Right?

  47. Robert Coontz (Administrator) says:

Ideally, yes. In practice, though, we can’t always respond or reply right away. For example, when I’m moderating on my Treo, it’s much easier to approve comments than it is to reply to them, and creating new threads is harder still. And our jobs sometimes require our attention, too. It’s an imperfect system, but we do our best.

Borzoi lover and I obviosly are great, because we think alike. I had entered this thread to post an idea, but Borzoi lover beat me to it. We need a thread to talk about dogs, their history, pedigree, our favorites for the American Kennal Club National Dog Show, training tricks, agility, our favorite breeds, our own dogs, to discuss the million dollar question: strong contour lines or soft? And of course, to talk about all our other pets. Cats, rats, mice, gerbils, etc.

    53. Not always.

    Pie 0
    Squid 0
  72. Alice says:

71- I tried not to show much enthusiasm, as I have too many projects already. Though I’m not feeling depressed, so I could most likely handle them all at once. But I will join (naturally!) provided that someone states clearly the time travel theory that we are using. *imagines scenarios where everyone brings their own opinions into the story* It will be the most confusing RRR ever.

Well, I’m only on one RRR right now. I’ve really wanted to join another one, but I can’t seem to fit into any of them. But a time-travel RRR sounds very interesting to my mind, so I expressed interest because it might turn out to be an RRR I actually join.

    75-

April 1, 2007. The blog was covered in HPBs. Everything was pink. (Or so I’ve heard, clearly it didn’t work on my browser.) All threads were shut down except for the threads about pinkness and bunnies. The bunnies themselves posted, but the GAPAs were nowhere to be seen. Several bloggers despaired; others rejoiced; a few brave people insisted that the other threads must be reopened. Some were. I have a suggestion that should be taken into careful consideration!!!!
With the 8 pages that we lost several of the musers think that we need them back. Vixen in the Eyes of the Moon sorta suggested it on May/June disscussion thread. Ask the musers, both bloggers and others to send in stories with the muses in there or articles for the magazine. I think it would be a big hit and the magazine could even get more than eight pages out of it! What do u think?

    Squid 0
  98. Vixen in the Eyes of the Moon says:

97- That’s what I’ve been trying to explain to you people! Thank you for rephrasing it. Now, what we need to do is send lots of e-mails and letter explaining our idea to the editors. I’ve already sent two, but we need to keep trying.

    (117) Here’s how you described it originally on the other thread:

I had an idea. Note that each person on museblog has a different style of writing. We should have a thread where everybody writes on a broad setting, for example; a girl mourns over her father’s death at his grave. A number of MBers would write it the way they would put it.

Alice wasn’t too keen on this specific subject; perhaps someone can suggest something a little less pointed. For instance, a girl buying flowers — she could be getting them to take to the grave site in your story or doing something entirely different in someone else’s.

Though I think you’re on the right track of choosing an image that can be pictured in the mind as a starting point.

43 (du Pelle) – I like the lists idea, too! I love lists :D

95 (Rebecca) – (This goes to the other GAPAs too), Why do you always put spaces in links and your email and such? If it’s the email address for the blog, and is found on the rules page and many other places, why put the spaces in? Is it so it doesn’t make a link, and if so, what is wrong with a link? I have just been noticing the GAPAs doing it, and thought it was a bit weird. Because it is a bit annoying to remove spaces in an email address if they’re not there for a reason…

142 (biblio) – that sounds interesting! (the history). I did a bit of that (well, mostly just a compilation of what other people said) in my uber-long post on the Newbie thread, and I think your thread idea is great!

  145. Robert Coontz (Administrator) says:

One way that spambots (programs that try to post junk messages) find new websites to bother is by searching for links to sites they’ve already found. To keep the spam down, we get, we try to minimize the number of links on the site. Hence, the spaces.

That’s the main reason. We also think MuseBlog should be an attraction in its own right, not a launchpad to other sites. Honestly, we wouldn’t mind if MBers ignored the rest of the Web entirely.

  154. Sweet Melpomene says:

I’m crashing on this thread for just a bit to propose an idea that I’m fairly certain the GAPAs will not like: A new religions thread.

The last one closed in April, due to its devolution into, essentially, a free-for-all. Mostly due to vast amounts of immaturity and overly-dramatic feelings getting involved. I agree with Robert for closing it. Note that it would be understood that the GAPAs would have the right to zap any inappropriate comments, ban people from that thread for too many offenses [after warnings, naturally], or shut it down if it turns out like the last one. To quote him:

Whatever you believe, millions or even billions of other people–for the most part well-meaning people, I think–are going to disagree with you. Somehow we’ve all got to live and function in a world in which that is so. Is the solution not to talk about it? Or not to think about it? That doesn’t seem like the Muse, or MuseBlog, way.

He’s absolutely correct. If we can keep the content of posts to something like “this is the doctrine of this religion and this is what I think about it,” then we should be able to keep it civil. However, if it turns into another “this religion is possibly the stupidest thing I have ever heard of, not to mention far inferior to mine and also incorrect” or “that religion caused an overwhelming number of atrocities.” Honestly, most religions are more positive than negative; our culture is simply fixated on the negative aspects…

It should be a thread to discuss the core beliefs of any given religion, its historical background, prevalence, and cultural quirks, as well as random interesting tidbits about it. NOT a thread to criticize what reprehensible things followers of that religion have done in the name of that religion. It should be purely about beliefs and spirituality, and things of the like, NOT intolerance and criticism of fellow Musers on the basis of their chosen belief system. It should be simply a thread that furthers our collective knowledge of the beliefs and religions of others, not persecution and intolerance on those grounds.

It should be for understanding, not an in-your-face profession of beliefs and attempts to convert people. Because, honestly, how likely is that? Not very. An atmosphere of mutual respect, even through disagreement, should be maintained. I think we can all manage this.

Also, it shouldn’t be a science versus religion sort of thread. Just a religion thread. NOT something to ‘disprove’ [for the lack of a better term] specific beliefs, NOT a place to outright attack them, and NOT a thread to serve as a soapbox for one’s beliefs.

    Thoughtful discussion, people.

I know that any given person’s belief system is usually a very important part of her/his life. The doctrine of that religion is an important factor in any decision made by that person, or any action performed by him/her. Wouldn’t providing an insightful view into those beliefs and their effects help us all to have a deeper understanding of the world around us?

In short, the thread should be a place to discuss the world’s religions, free of personal bias. If something violently disagrees with you, at least take the time to edit your post into a thoughtful, civil dissertation, instead of an angry rant. It’s the very least you can do. This should not even be necessary if things like “this religion is mostly a tool of destruction” aren’t said. It’s not the religion itself, it’s simply what its followers do. That can’t be helped; that shouldn’t be a part of this thread unless it is discussed as purely factual information about the background of the religion.
    For example:
“The Inca sacrificed animals daily because of the rising of the sun, and, thus, the continuation of life” would be acceptable. Complete fact. Completely okay. NOT “The Inca were horrible murderous fiends that killed thousands of innocent animals just because they were idiots and needed to celebrate a natural occurrence that would have happened anyway.” That’s bordering on flaming, and makes the poster look like a arrogant, close-minded fool.

Obviously, people have mentally justified their beliefs. They make sense to the person, and that should be respected, no matter how inane they may seem to an observer. We’re broadening our understanding, not converting here. What’s right for some people isn’t for others. And that’s just part of the human condition and all.

So, can we bite our tongues, open our minds, and give it a try?

    3. (The Rule of Pumpkin) No indestructible fortresses or unavoidable superweapons. What fun is there in pie wars if you aren’t running the risk of losing?
    4. (The Rule of Cherry) No ultra-controversial real-world topics. A pie war fought over global warming or religion would quickly escalate into a flame war. However, ultra-controversial blog-world topics, such as HPBs or Chuck Norris, are permissible. Less controversial real-world topics, such as what flavor of ice cream is best, are also permissible.
    5. (The Rule of Boysenberry) No lethal weapons. The worst that can happen to someone is being buried under 100,000 pies or thereabouts.
    6. (The Rule of Cherry) Remember the Dread Phrase. No real enmity.
    7. (The Rule of Blueberry) Try to stay within the bounds of reality, as long as reality includes unusual pies used as weapons. If you pie everyone 10,000 times in one post, where do you get all your supplies to make those pies?
    8. (The Rule of Key Lime) If someone wants to exit a pie war, all they have to do is declare it. They cannot be pied or pie thereafter.
    9. (The Rule of Coconut Cream) If someone wants to re-enter a pie war, they can declare it, and they are open to pieing.
How do those sound? Any suggestions?
And I know the last two are redundant, I just wanted to put in Rules of Key Lime and Coconut Cream.
A disclaimer: I know I broke a lot of those rules in the first Pie War. That, in fact, is why I’m making them: to prevent newbies from entering a pie war, seeing the illusion of enmity, and mistaking it for real enmity.
We don’t have to make a Pie War thread right now, but we can keep these for future reference.

  204. Glassboro says:

But see, the Great Pie Wars had all of these big weapons and everything in them, and were a whole lot of fun. We just have to remember to keep it like them. It’ll be hard, though, with all the newbies. Maybe we could hide it or something? Because they just get annoying. I expect that I was, too, when I was new. In fact, I’m sure that I was.

    Pie 0
    Squid 0
  205. Alice says:

204- But the Great Pie Wars had adventures in which the weapons were used. Caves, and stuff. The more recent pie war was just a bunch of people pieing other people, at least for the part that I was around for.

203- Thanks for pointing that out.
Here’s Rule System v. 1.2, with a modified Rule of Blueberry and a renamed second Rule of Cherry.
    1. (The Rule of Banana Cream) No spreading vendettas to other threads.
    2. (The Rule of Apple) No verbal attacks. Wrong:” I HATE YOU *PIEPIEPIEPIEPIEPIE* GAAHHH DIE DIE DIE” Right: “*PIEPIEPIEPIEPIE*”
    3. (The Rule of Pumpkin) No indestructible fortresses or superweapons that automatically make you win.
    6. (The Rule of Lemon Meringue) Remember the Dread Phrase. No real enmity.
    7. (The Rule of Blueberry) The weapons are only limited by your creativity and the rules of Boysenberry and Pumpkin.
    8. (The Rule of Key Lime) If someone wants to exit a pie war, all they have to do is declare it. They cannot be pied or pie thereafter.
    9. (The Rule of Coconut Cream) If someone wants to re-enter a pie war, they can declare it, and they are open to pieing.

  210. Prarilius Canix says:

Maybe they should be less limiting, but do you actually think that the Rule of Apple is bad? Or the Rule of Lemon Meringue?
Maybe I’m alone in craving order. Maybe I’m the only Muser who thinks that pie wars shouldn’t degenerate into something like “*throws-ultimate-destruction-pie*-yeaahhh-i-pwned-u-all-Oh-yeah, -well-I’ve-got-a-super-unpwnable-shield,-so-*throws-ultimate-destruction -pie*-yeahh-i-pwned-u.” If that’s the case, I’ll respect that, and organize a Pie Tournament in Museica or something, but I think that pie wars should have a certain degree of fairness.

    Pie 0
    Squid 0
  211. Alice says:

208- I agree with all of them save Banana Cream and Lemon Meringue, the latter because some people might want to hate each other, and the former because it’s kind of fun to pie someone on the wrong thread.

    210- I agree.

I think that pie wars ought to be more like the Musiverse threads, with actual strategies and adventures, rather than this:

Muser 1: *pies everyone not on my side*
Muser 2: *pies Muser 1 back*
Muser 3: Here’s a pieing truck! [pieing truck]
Muser 4: Here’s another! [pieing truck] [pieing truck]

That gets boring. I’m not saying there should be absolutely none of that, I’m just saying that we should do stuff while posting pictures of our Ultra-Cool-Pieing-Weapon-Of-Doom-And-Destruction and pieing people randomly. But that’s just me, so maybe I should go wage war on someone in Museica.

    Or

(person’s name) ?|? (Date) at (time)

You just make these rules based on the last one, which wasn’t very good. I think that we just say “To hell with rules, let’s just get on with it”. Assuming that people can keep control of themselves we don’t need rules. If they have no self-control I’ll probably leave the thread, and may consider leaving the MB.

    1. (The Rule of Apple) No verbal attacks or flaming. Wrong:” I HATE YOU *PIEPIEPIEPIEPIEPIE* GAAHHH DIE DIE DIE” Right: “*PIEPIEPIEPIEPIE*”

Or not. That’s what I’m doing, but it’s likely that if there’s a controversial topic then no one’s going to notice if I start pieing people, and I’d just make a fool of myself.

280- From Wikipedia: As the popularity of D&D grew throughout the late 1970s and 1980s, references to the game often began to appear in popular culture. Numerous games, films and cultural references based on D&D or D&D-like fantasies, characters, or adventures have been ubiquitous since the end of the 1970s. Typically, though by no means exclusively, D&D players are portrayed derogatively as the epitome of “geekdom”.[135] References to the game are used as shorthand to establish characterization or provide the punch line of a joke.[136] Many players, miffed with this stereotype,[137] embrace the fact that comedian Stephen Colbert, musician Moby, and actors Vin Diesel, Matthew Lillard, Mike Myers, Patton Oswalt, Wil Wheaton and Robin Williams have made their D&D hobbies public.

I don’t play it. I have friends who do. They are not geeks, they are nerds.

  289. Sobriquet says:

First of all, Nerd was coined by Dr. Seuss. So that by itself makes it the better label. If you want actually definitions, here are the differences according to the creators of the facebook group, Nerd Pride Activism: (this is their entire description, I just copied and pasted. However, the definitions are there)

You know the feeling: that burning passion for academia. Maybe you don’t admit it, maybe you cherish it above all else, but it’s there.

One of the hallmarks of being a nerd involves loving being yourself, loving life itself. Some call this phenomenon being “high on life.” This feeling generates Nerd Pride, hence, this group.

A major problem, however, involves the simple reality that nerds are often misunderstood by the world at large. Nerds are not socially incompetant, do not always wear pocket protectors, sometimes play sports, and are, at heart, intelligent, academically-focused, well-rounded folks who aren’t afraid to express their individuality. Clearing up this misunderstanding partly justifies this group’s existence.

It is important to note that what this group calls a “nerd” may differ from other definitions, particularly with regards to the term “geek”. That’s alright, although the distinction between a nerd and a geek must be explained here.

    Nerd:
There are many different versions of nerd, of course: science (including biology, chemistry, geology, etc.), computer, history, music, theater, writing, and others are just a few of the different concentrations of nerd out there.
However, a nerd has a life outside of said area of interest; (s)he has a healthy respect and interest in academia as a whole, and probably seeks the companionship of others to help make life more interesting, and for the sake of their company.

    Geek:
A geek, like a nerd, has a favorite area of interest. However, (s)he exhibits less of an interest in other fields, sometimes placing less importance on social relationships as well.

While the members of this groups have nothing against geeks, we seek to identify ourselves as different from them.

    ******************************************
For those who don’t know: this group was founded by a member of Johns Hopkins’ Center for Talented Youth (CTY), commonly referred to as “nerd camp”. It is a wonderful place where nerds gather to take one intensive class for three weeks and live among fellow nerds.

    (378) We’ve thought about it, but the bulletin boards I’ve seen all seem blocky and sterile next to our cozy and familiar if somewhat clunky blog. We might switch eventually, but first we’re more likely to introduce a wiki for things like “Who’s Here” and RRRs.

Sorry! I can’t see comment numbers when I’m moderating on my Treo. Can’t even tell which thread I’m on, half the time. It’s a technological limitation I live with in the interest of getting posts up faster.

    Another suggestion!
You know how J. R. R. Tolkien invented an incredibly detailed world, with its own legends, geography and history? Let’s have a thread where MBers collaborate on something like that, Muserly elements such as hot pink bunnies optional.
My idea would be to have it somewhat like an RRR, only with the tone of a scholarly text or a complete encyclopedia of that world. We’d start with geography, move on to history, and perhaps fill in the legend after that.
A note. While this is craziness, it is strictly nonrandom. If the first few posts set the tone for seriousness, do not attempt to make it silly. Conversely, if it is more in the comic vein, do not inject ill-suited seriousness. A universe of HPBs and pie throwing should not be intruded on by people with cosmic quests and pointy ears, or vice versa.

(379, 392) Featured Threads of the Week: You want to make more work for GAPAs? I’m overstretched as it is.

    (388) Sorry, your friendly Administrators are allergic to Leet/1337 and are more likely to zap it on sight than to devote a whole thread to it.

    (397) That suggestion sounds like a good argument for starting a wiki around here. That could take a little while, though (see the first response).

  400. Prarilius Canix says:

Hmm. Well, I have nothing particular in mind. As for the differences, like I said, it would be more like RRRiting an encyclopedic text than playing an RPG. Unlike the Musiverse threads, MBers would have no participation in it as pwners, sea captains, prime musers or otherwise. And unlike most RRRs, as far as we’re using the Tolkien analogy, it would be more like the Silmarillion than LOTR and Hobbit, providing backstory instead of an actual story.
    That good enough?
