    1- That’s your entire seating audition? lucky…

I should be practicing right now.
Instead I’m listening to… Rachmaninov, Vocalise. amazing.

So here’s a summary of my music life::

I’m taking composition, theory, ear training, my technique violin lesson, chamber music, and orchestra on saturday.
My regular violin lesson and my percussion lesson are on wednesday.
Composition is fun, but I need to write something to bring to class saturday. Probably just a continuation of the two pieces I’ve kind of started… I hope I can get in the mindset tomorrow afternoon.
Theory is 7th chords. Not too bad, because it’s new material for me.
Ear training… is most interesting. I like the class. It’s kind of different than I expected. There has been absolutely no solfege so far. :)
Chamber music starts this saturday… I don’t have my music yet.
Orchestra is really fun. We’re doing Haydn 104, and I’m principal 2nd.

On violin I’m playing Praeludium and Allegro (Kreisler) and DeBeriot violin concerto no. 9.

All in all, a good start to the year.

    Nobody cares, right? fine. :D
then I’ll go practice. goodbye for now, museblog.

Does anyone else here know what Solo and Ensemble is? I’m competing in it this year, singing in a quartet. Is anyone else?

Okay, I’ve said this in other Music threads before, but I doubt anyone’s going to go back and read through the entire thread.

I sing alto/mezzo soprano in choir and just started voice lessons a few months ago. A play the piano and compose for piano/voice. I also played the trombone until I got braces, and am teaching myself how to play the guitar.

I don’t currently have any favorite bands, I listen to pretty much anything except screamo and extremely heavy metal. As for rap, sometimes it’s fine and other times I can’t stand it.

My favorite song at the moment is “Never Alone”, by Barlow Girl. No, I don’t usually listen to Christian Rock like that, but it’s really quite pretty. The song stuck in my head right now is the Wallace and Gromit theme song. *cheese* :)

ohh…music. John Mayer is probably the most inspirational artist i have ever heard. especially his album Continuum. it’s just so beautiful. and then of course, there’s DragonForce and Blind Guardian and Weird Al and all that good stuff. i’m off to take a bath. with bath salt! weird. scented bath salt, too. it’s supposed to be really good for your skin, which i need. i have all these scabs that i can’t stop picking, and they eventually turn into scars…oh! and i went golfing for the first time today (real golf, not mini) and it turns out that i’m a natural! on my 3rd hole (ever) i was about 20 feet away from the tee, and i hit it with a 6 iron and actually got it into the green! THE GREEN! w00t!!!!!! yeah…and now i’ve got a really bad blister on my index finger from about halfway through the 9 holes, but it doesn’t hurt anymore. so…that’s about it.

I think right now my favorite song might be Ana Ng, by TMBG.

I loved band today: we marched around the neighborhood of the school, scaring the innocent residents with our marching-band-ed-ness. If I could actually walk in a straight line, it would probably have been my favorite part of the day. “Hey, look! There’s a group of local high school band geeks outside the window at 9:00!”

My brother is learning to play the trumpet… So I’m going to live in a cave…

I’m really surprised at where I was placed in band, because I think it’s certainly better than I expected.

5- usually, topical threads like this are only about music, everything else goes on the random thread or thread for that topic.
    Playing music:
4- *scoffs* I’ve known people who’ve played trombone with braces. I am not one of them, but if my next dentist appointment goes badly, I am likely to become one. Metal spikes pressed against your lip can’t be that bad.

As you all already know if you’ve been paying *any* attention to me on the random thread: I play trombone, this is the beginning of my sixth year of it, my life right now is pretty much marching band, where I am a second trombone, concert band, where I utterly fail at life with second trombone, second chair, and everything else unimportant.

In recent news, if I don’t have the anthem and all the stand music memorized I’m in serious trouble tomorrow.
Also, I’ve handed in All-County band forms. Hope I get in (and in a good spot).

    Listening to music:
Today I heard someone in the woods playing Don’t Panic when I was walking around the block. It was a very xkcd-ish moment but I’m not supposed to go into the woods so I didn’t. :(

I want more Coldplay and Muse songs. Two months until my birthday.

I have made playlists based on what mood songs make me feel or augment.
Titles of playlists, to give you a sampling of my reactions to music:
    -Songs to walk to
    -harmony/vocal interplay!!!1!!eleven!!!

I am still playing flute. This year’s marching band theme is The Beatles, so we’re playing Elenr Rigby, When I’m 64, and Can’t buy me love. Can’t buy me love sounds good but the drill is really lame… it’s our closer, too.

Oh! Next week is senior night, which means the seniors get to pick a song, write the drill, and choose what their section wears. All I know isat the begining we’re running out to the feild to make a heart, then we’re breaking it in half fo the first set. I suggested that bit :)

    Playing music:
I play some piano, flute (although I haven’t played in 2 years and only remember the B flat scale), and I’m learning guitar. Sort of. I love to sing.

    Listening to music:
Music is my life. Bands… Currently I’m in a Green Day mood. I also love My Chemical Romance. Other bands include Three Days Grace, Fall Out Boy, Papa Roach (I just wanna be, wanna be lo-o-oved!), AFI, Goldfinger, Evanescence (mostly older stuff), Panic! At the Disco, Linkin Park, Meg & Dia, Paramore, Nickelback, The Red Jumpsuit Apparatus, and The Used, among others. Of course, I like Weird Al (I went to the concert – very awesome) and some Avril Lavigne is good. Pop is okay, I just can’t listen to too much of it at one time. I hate rap (Linkin Park doesn’t count, they sound so different) and I don’t like metal. Some screamo is bearable, just not a ton. I don’t really like country. Mostly I just stick to alternative, though some “normal rock” is pretty good. Oh, and 30 Seconds To Mars is good.
    Let’s see…

I would like to learn more chord theory. As it is, my understanding of suchy things is appallingly shabby.

    (14) I’ve always wanted a Beatles theme for marching! That would be even cooler than The Who. This year for us it’s Fiesta Mexicana, which is…ok. I mean the music actually sounds pretty good but it doesn’t have the same froodosity, you know? Next year should be cool, though…. Danny Elfman. We’ll be doing Nightmare Before Christmas, Edward Scissorhands, Beatlejuice and Spiderman. We played it in concert last year, it was cool.

4 & 8–Sweet! I compose too! Except sometimes I cheat, I use a computer program to score it…but I always start on the piano.

18–I love Danny Elfman! He’s one of my favorite composers.

19–Woo hoo! I love dancing to rap! Mostly just because the way I get to act when I dance like that I never get to act like in “real” life. :) Do you know the pop lock and drop it dance?

I’m going to a party at a DJ studio and I get to wear this dress that I’ve been absolutely DYING to wear. It’s black and pink. But in any case, it will be loud and black-lighted and it will have lots of dancing. Hoo raw.

Hmm…for playing music, I love anything wierd and contemporary (like Ginastera, Katchaturian, etc.) and also Baroque music (sometimes). I also love movie scores. I play piano, by the way.

For singing, I like gospel or foreign languages…I got to sing one in Portuguese the other day, that was fun. I also like Holst’s “The Planets”, especially Homeland. Anyone ever heard of it? Please tell me I’m not the only one. Oh well.

For listening…I like rap and alternative, mostly Green Day, My Chemical Romance, Ok Go, The Last Goodnight, Rihanna, Red Hot Chili Peppers…mostly anything enerjetic or with a good beat and not too shouty–I like stuff that’s actually musical, unlike *cough heavymetal cough*. Excuse me, I must be catching a cold… :)

So yeah. End of music post. For all the choir people out there, what have you sung? I’ve done Elijah Rock, Carmina Burana, The Storm is Passing Over, How Can I Keep From Singing…etc. Let me know if you’ve done any of those!

20-i used to hate heavy metal also. then ebeth, fridgey and glassboro came after me. they got me into elvenking and kamelot and other stuff and now i like it a lot. the music does carry a melody and its quite complex at times. not to mention its also folk metal and folk is just pwnsome.

    16-i’ll try it…

4-barlow girl! w00t! w00t! i used to listen to them all the time. i like never alone, isn’t that track six on the cd? if it is, i liked track 3, 6, and 9.(i can never remember the names) christian fock is not bad. my favorite christian band is Red album:End of Silence. awesome stuff.

my sister works for a music school and she is obsessed with the beatles, so she got me listening to them. they really are good. can’t buy me love is pretty good. along with Hey jude and We can work it out.

i play the piano, but we moved recently and now i live too far away from my piano tteacher to get lessons. maybe i’ll try to find someone else…any way, i love almost any type of music, excluding rap. some rap songs are catchy and good, but most are just crap. linkin park is really good, but sometimes i think that they lack skill. my favorite bands include:

    Rush
    Red
    Kutless
    Elvenking
    Kamelot
    Keane
    Coldplay
    Kansas
    the Wurzels(heehee)
    Led Zepplin
Areosmith(these i don’t listen to, i just like some of their songs)
    Beatles

    18-ooh, danny elfman! that’s exciting

our first show this year was beatles. then we did blues brothers, 70’s, and homecoming was 70’s funk. our senior show is mostly 70’s stuff too actually. we’re a very 70’s band. :D

20-we did carmina (i’m not in choir, but i did full orchestra). it was intense

21-same! it was mostly fridgey for me, and partly JS. i was just kind of ready for something new, musically, and metal’s actually quite good if you know what to look for

also, rush is great. the rest of my family hates it, and i have no idea why. but dad’s not really into the harder rock, and my mom’s idea of hard rock is huey lewis and styx, so i guess it makes sense. as for the lb, he’s only about john williams and the beatles.

celia went to the arcade fire concert that was just here. i’d never heard of them before, but she said they were really good, and she has good taste in music :D i got some off limewire, but it’s not the greatest quality. but she said she’d make me a cd.

20- I must dissagree with your comment about metal. Quite a bit of metal, the kind I listen to, is very musically complex and often features more different instruments then some of the modern popular music. Again to bring up the example of folk metal, it uses violins and flutes as well as guitars and drums. And many bands have great melodies and songs; a lot isn’t at all like the kind you hear on the radio. Like Elvenking, Kamelot, Falconer…

21- Ha, beat me to it. XD And what, I didn’t help? Hehe.

playing music-i got a new guitar teacher, he’s from Sweden and understands metal, so w00t for me. he’s making me play yngwie malmsteen, and i havent played i ages, so…. my fingers hurt.
listening to music i just got a korpiklaani disco, and a wintersun, wintersun’s only cd. pretty much insane. i would very much recommend it to anyone who likes metal. admittedly it has growls *gasp* but its amazing. and growls are cool, when one gets used to them. very cool in fact, cean vocals sound weird with many kinds of metal.
26/21-you imply that the only kind of metal that is good is power and folk metal!! no!!! but it is a good place to start. when i got into metal, i first liked dragonforce, and helloween, iron maiden etc. those guys. now…. not so much. the way i first got into black/death is cradle of filth. one song of theirs was simply so darkly beautiful, i loved growls after that. for people who like folk/power but nothing else, just go on youtube and listen to nymphetamine fix. by them, of course. if its not your thing, understandable. then i would recommend ensiferum’s into battle. they have a sweet video with them over lotr footage. this is actaully folk metal, but it has growls. some of the most awesome stuff ever. anyone who listens to elvenking and helloween but not much else in terms of metal, at least listen to that. it is the best.

  29. Ebeth says:

28-i’m not a big fan of the growls, but a few here and there can work, musically, if they’re done well.

that’s the main thing about metal i think, is that it’s so easy to do it badly that most people only ever hear the bad stuff, and then it gets typecast and then the really good musicians don’t want to do metal because they don’t think it’s all that musical, and it just goes on…

there is some really good stuff out there though.

In other news, I have lost my iPod in a permanent way. I was crying all yesterday. I cleaned half of my room, the only place it had any possibility of being in, and I don’t know how I’m going to survive until I get a new music player (probably when I’ve saved up enough in six months or so :( )

Does anyone have any suggestions for non-iPod (better than iPod) mp3 players? I’m going to do online research on things I’ve heard of like Zen players, and I know someone who has a Sansa and was proclaiming that iPods suck last year, I’ll ask him, but other input would help.
It has to be able to accept .m4a AAC files and get my play counts from iTunes(or be really, really nice otherwise), and 8 gigabytes as an absolute minimum of space. It has to play video in a format it’s easily possible to convert to. I’d like to easily understand it and I’d like it to have some of the same features of an iPod (shuffle, games, alarm clock, and I think things like playlists, repeat, and album art are standard). It has to have a very long battery life or battery packs available to extend that.
I’d also like it to have things an iPod doesn’t if I’m going to the trouble of setting it up (relative to just getting a new iPod that works perfectly with iTunes); maybe a voice recorder or radio tuner. If it was cheaper I’d like that a lot. I’m being very specific, but I’d muchly appreciate general input even if it doesn’t match all of them.

I’ve never used a mute before. There were never enough trombones, and I play pretty quietly, a mute wouldn’t help that.

171/172-this is where i launch into huge rant on morality of filesharing. many people care about filesharing, includIng me, and the MpaA, RIAA, and other evil organizations. basically, recoRD labels and the way the music industry is set up now is very bad. there are very few, very rich record labels that sign very few bands. they take most of the money, and make it so that most americans only like very bland pop. then three is this phenomenon of filesharing, the idea that people hsould be able to share electronic files. this system is problematic, because artists do not recieve compensation, but the general idea is that the internet will allow the artists to become popular, then thye make moeny from concerts/merch etc. the AAs(riaa etc.) answer to this is to sue and try to take off the internet any filesharing site. this will be their own downfall, one cannot conquer the majority with a few rich people. especially on the internet. if the music industry does not cooporate with them soon, it will die, and there will be rampant good music in the world. O NOES!

filesharing is win. bands can get money from live concerts and merch. i don’t see why music should be something you have to pay for, honestly. isn’t the idea of a song to send a message? you would think musicians would want their message to get to as many people as possible. and if they have no message for people, then why on earth should they expect people to pay for their worthless music? personally, i think filesharing will improve the quality of music, because everybody knows starving artists are better (:D kind of jk). all the people who just get into music because they think it’ll make them rich and/or famous will be gone, and the musicians that stay will be the ones who really care and really have something to say. plus, i like music and i don’t have the money to buy half the stuff on my ipod right now. (mostly because i bought the ipod :D)

It’s kind of like a painting – you have to pay to go into an art gallery and see the original, but you can look at a copy for free. And if it’s good enough, people will still pay to see the original even if they’ve seen a ton of copies, so live concerts will always be a good source of income.

I am hiding from my nano. It lies in wait, calling… “you have 1500 words to write today…yes, that means before midnight… it doesn’t matter that there isn’t school tomorrow or for the next five days (yes, you’ll miss people, no, you can’t spiral into a minor nonproductive depression due to this), you have history work to do tomorrow”

I was listening to some things on youtube, that counts as music.
The video in combination with the song Stockholm Syndrome, by Muse, is kind of terrifying. Especially after checking out a few Radiohead songs, which I’ve never heard before, which seem to tend to be subtly spooky, especially when I’m tired anyway. I still feel compelled to listen to it, though.
Now I’m listening to TMBG, and songs I’ve heard many, many times, comforting music. It was a very strange genre shift to Birdhouse, but necessary.
edit/update: needed upbeat, loudness, things to force me to pay attention. I’m too used to TMBG and can ignore it because I constantly listen. A few Relient K songs seemed to wake me up, defying all logic.

Hannah Montana- is not a musician. She is a TV show. She is a caricature of an artist. With that said, my sister listens, and I have to be initially biased against her due to that, so I won’t judge.

Avril Lavigne- Ehh. Not bad, I don’t think in my admittedly limited experience, but not generally the type of thing I look for.

I downloaded two of Fridgey’s band’s songs. The vocals are lacking, but it’s still pretty good for a band with every member around 16.

slayer is supposedly a good thrash band, but i don’t listen to them. i read a little while ago that they go sued by a mother of a murder victim. the victim was killed by a bunch of teens who were “inspired” by slayer to kill her. since slayer sung so much about killing things and…other, they wanted to try it out themselves. and so they killed somebody, got caught, and and are in jail. and now slayer is on the carpet for singing their songs. whatever.

OK. with the arrival of those weirdos Soulja Boi and other snap/dance rap musicians, HIP HOP IS OFFICIALLY . I am not a huge fan of the big time rappers, with the exception of maybe Lil Wayne and Lupe Fiasco. Most of the best rappers are underground right now, like my favorite rap group of all time Tru Rez Crew. Boston rappers like Frankie Wainwright, Akrobatik, Dre Rob, and Term (shoutouts to beantown!) are taking over the underground. I don’t want them to go public because it would ruin them. The true rapper raps about his experiences in life, not if he’s invented a new dance. So many poser rappers are destroying rap with their terrible talent, like Lil Mama, who repeats 4 lines throughout a 4 minute song, Yung Joc, who always has the same beat, and Soulja Boi, whose stupid dance is overlapping the fact he has no talent. Any body that doesn’t appreciate hip-hop probably hasn’t listened to real hip hop. So here is a list of artists:
    KRS-One
    Busta Rhymes
    Tru Rez Crew
    Shadowyze
    Frankie Wainwright
    Akrobatik
    Rez Mobb
    Term
    Mighty Myztic
    Dr. Dre prior to 2003
    Tupac (RIP)
Biggie Smalls (but not Puff Daddy/P. Diddy/ Diddy)
    Tukuleur
    Common
    Lupe Fiasco
Rick Ross (port of miami Ross, not all that crap w/ Khaled)
    Jay-Z
    NWA
The Game (not 50 cent or yayo or young buck or other gunit)
    Wyclef Jean
    Swizz Beats

    And stay away from

    Bubba Sparxxx
    R Kelly
    Soulja Boi
    Lil Mama
    Nelly
    Yung Joc
    Unk
    T Pain
    Plies

    a Dr. Demento compilation

and soundtracks to various things, all under “Various Artists”:
    Barnum

It didn’t matter what subject you might be discussing, he would insult whatever you thought, and often personally insulted people. FS was probably the most talented debater on MuseBlog. I only compared Cliff Eagle to him because he was known for strongly standing up for what he thought. 272-Seriously, I don’t listen to the lyrics. I use it as background music/dance music. I don’t care what they say, as long as it sounds good. Which is a totally horrible thing to say, I know, but it’s the truth. Don’t eat me alive, please.

Re: FS-I think he could have been a bit nicer, but at least he was honest in his opinons. I try to be honest and not hurt people at the same time, but sometimes it just didn’t work out. Mom throws fifty culture bashing rants at me a day, so I’m used to it.

284-That was not a flame. That was SO not a flame. It was an opinon of annoyance. I think what Glassboro said could have been a bit nicer (maybe like FS?) but it was so not a flame.

Yeah, I’m gonna actually put some music in this post. Since my mp3 dosn’t give top fifteens or twenty fives, I’m gonna post my most played on iTunes. Don’t be scared, it’s been raided by a Hannah Montana loving friend. Don’t eat me. *=song she bought/listened to, not me

295-The creepy thing is that “I Did Yo Boyfriend” has a catchy, kinda sassy tune. I don’t listen to it overlymuch, but every time I want to throw something at the wall and bring the house down it’s a good soundrack to do it by. (Concept stolen from PC’s novel.)

Well, I don’t care for it imensely, but It covered “Heard it through the Grapevine” which is a classic, so it was better than I thought.

Get it is ok, i guess, I like Bun B.

Beavo- one song I think you would like (although its not crunk) Is “Rockstar” not by Hannah Montana but by Kid Rock, Ludacris and R. Kelly. I am not a fan of Kells, but this joint is pretty good. Tell me what you think.

The new song by Brittany Spears (which isn’t new) is called Peice of Me and it starts with a sound similar to a squished pig. If I was her, I would put “No pigs were harmed in the making of this album.” Even though she has a leather hat…

301-that song is called “In the End”. its one of my favorites, next to “Crawling”. good stuff.

    It starts with
One thing, I don’t know why
It doesn’t even matter how hard you try
    Keep that in mind
    I designed this rhyme
    To explain due time
    All I know
    Time is a valuable thing
Watch it fly by as the pendulum swings
Watch it count down till the end of the day
    The clock ticks life away
    It’s so unreal
    You didn’t look out below,
Watch the time go right out the window
    Tryin to hold on
Didnt even know, I wasted it all
    Just to watch you go
    I kept everything inside
    And even though I tried
    It all fell apart
    What it’s meant to be
    Will eventually,
be a memory, of a time

    Chorus:

When I tried so hard and got so far
But in the end, it doesnt even matter
I had to fall, to lose it all
But in the end, it doesn’t even matter

    (Verse 2)
One thing, I don’t know why
It doesn’t even mather how hard you try
    Keep that in mind
    I designed this rhyme
    To remind myself
    How I tried so hard

Despite the way you were mocking me
Acting like I was part of your property
Remembering all the times you fought with me
I’m surprised it got so far
Things aren’t the way they were before
You wouldn’t even recognize me anymore
Not that you knew me back then
But it all comes back to me
    In the end

    You kept everything inside
And even though I tried it all fell apart
What it meant to be, will
Eventually, be a memory of a time
    When I tried so hard,

    Chorus:

    And got so far,
But in the end, it doesn’t even matter
I had to fall, to lose it all
But in the end, it doesn’t even matter

    (Verse 3)
I’ve put my trust in you
Pushed as far, as I can go
    For all this
There’s only one thing you should know

I’ve put my trust, in you
Pushed as far as I can go
    For all this
There’s only one thing you should know

    I’ve tried so hard,
    And got so far,
But in the end, it doesn’t even matter
I had to fall, to lose it all,
But in the end, it doesn’t even matter
