Thanksgiving 2007

In the United States, it’s on November 22. Canadian Thanksgiving this year, however, is on Monday, October 8, and at least one Canadian MuseBlogger is desperate to talk about it. Any excuse will do for a party, we say.

I don’t celebrate Thanksgiving much. Usually we go to my grandparent’s house and last year we made our own feast, whihc was yummy, but that’s it.

I like cranberry sauce. Sometimes we buy it and sometimes we mqake our own.

Don’t wanna be a Canadian idiot
Don’t wanna be some beer swillin’ hockey nut
And do I look like some frostbitten hose-head?
I never learned my alphabet from A to Zed
They all live on donuts and moose meat
And they leave the house without packin’ heat
Never even bring their guns to the mall
And you know what else is too funny?
    Their stupid Monopoly money
Can’t take ’em seriously at all

Well maple syrup and snow’s what they export
They treat curling just like it’s a real sport
They think their silly accent is so cute
    Can’t understand a thing they’re talkin’ aboot

Sure they got their national health care
Cheaper meds, low crime rates and clean air
Then again well they got Celine Dion
Eat their weight in Kraft macaroni
And dream of drivin’ a Zamboni
    All over Saskatchewan

Don’t wanna be a Canadian idiot
Won’t figure out their temperature in Celsius
See the map, they’re hoverin’ right over us
Tell you the truth, it makes me kinda nervous

Always hear the same kind of story
Break their nose and they’ll just say “sorry”
Tell me what kind of freaks are that polite?
It’s gotta mean they’re all up to somethin’
So quick, before they see it comin’
    Time for a pre-emptive strike!

    Sorry, Kagy.

All my canadian cousins (fine, fifth through ninth cousins) really love that song. Mom forbade me to let them listen to it, and they had already heard it, and literally broke into my cottage and stole my CD of Weird Al. I tried to point out that I loved American Idiot by Green Day, but will she listen? Noooo.

Sorry, that had NOTHING to do with Thanxgivin.

Kagy, question. Why do Canadians celebrate Thanksgiving? Is it because of the whole Squanto-and-Pilgrim thing, or is it something else, or is it just because you wanted to have a party?

Plus, American money is getting colorful too, and it’s worth about the same as Canadian dollars. Seriously, American dollars are now worth little more than Monopoly money. I mean, the Euros at two bucks forty! TWO FRICKIN’ BUCKS FORTY!! What’s up with THAT???!!!??!! *pants*
    Anywho, enjoy your thanksgiving.

5- and so you should. we are awesome. are you canadian?

8- sok. it’s kinda funny. the alphabet sounds better A-Zed anyways. and american money looks really fake, i’m seriouse to me it looks like play money.

11- I have no idea. i doubt it has to do with pilgrims. I can probably find out though.

    That would be…

But I heart Thanksgiving. I like turkey, since it’s mostly dark meat, which I prefer. (White is so bland!) And heart cranberry sauce. I used to hate it, but then I tried Craisins and liked them and then later I tried cranberry sauce again and it was love! We normally just have the four of us (mom, dad, little brother, and me) and make and eat dinner together, over which our parents usually remind us that we have much to be thankful for, etc. Which is very, very true.

  16. Robert Coontz (Administrator) says:

    Happy Thanksgiving, Kagcomix!

(12, 14) The value of American dollars relative to other currencies really doesn’t reflect the overall health of the country. When the dollar “falls,” it becomes more expensive for American tourists to buy things in other countries. On the other hand, it also becomes cheaper for foreigners to buy things from America, so American exporters get a boost. There are winners and losers, as with most things in economics. It’s all part of the game.

But that’s not what I logged on to say. The real message, as philosophical.bunny just said, is that we all have much to be thankful for. And that’s worth celebrating on anybody’s Thanksgiving Day.

13-No, but I lived there for a month over the summer, near Lake Ontario, and it was amazing. And I’ve been to Montreal, too.

I don’t believe this is going to have anything to do with the topic the comments are on now – but I recently heard a funny story about how my aunt once celebrated Thanksgiving in Canadia (yes, I know – that’s how I spell it). On the American date, in November. She actually heard from some of her guests that most of them didn’t know what the heck she was doing and why – and most only came for the free dinner. Kind of depressing and funny at the same time, if that’s possible.

23- it’s not that difficult. at least most of our money is labeled obviousely as in 25cents on the quarter. unlike all the random ornimentation on the US quarter where you can barely see the “Quarter Dollar”. well, it’s not that visible is what i’m trying to say. at least canadian money is obviouse. out of curiousity: do you guys ever get canadian pennies in your change because i ALWAYS get american pennies in my change (KEPP YOUR MONEY ON YOUR SIDE OF THE BORDER… kindding ofcourse)

Does anyone here realize that Thanksgiving is a genocidal holiday? Sorry to bring race into this, but as a Native American , I have to say that after the first thanksgiving, they killed Squanto and all the other natives. That led to a nationwide genocide and now my brothers are on a reservation. Rez life sucks. The schools suck, there’s too much crime and not enough jails.
By the way, we prefer to be called by the names of our tribes, not Native American, but Cherokee, Lakota, etc. (i’m snohomish/suquamish.)

Thanksgiving is one of my favorite holidays. We go to Pennsylvania and chill with my dad’s side of the family for a couple of days which is great because that’s the side we see less often the rest of the time. I have four cousins on that side, two in their twenties, one about my age (fifteen, making him the closest in age to me in my entire extended family period), and one a bit younger than my sister. So my older cousins bring their significant others and my cousin and I play video games and my sister plays with the dog a lot and my grandparents come and we all have a lovely time. My uncle is a good cook and people make pies and whatnot. I can’t wait.
