Hot Soup, Part 1

In a break with tradition, the title of January’s random thread does not contain the name of the month. Instead, it refers to the peculiar fact that the United States Congress has declared this National Soup Month. Plunge on in! First, though, join us in singing the Muse Soup Song (to the tune of “Have a Pie” [to the tune of “Let It Be”]).

When I find myself all cold and cranky,
Mimi shows up on my stoop,
Speaking words of solace: “Have some soup!”
And when the hailstones pound the window
And my spirits start to droop,
I know what she’ll tell me: “Have some soup!”

CHORUS:
Have some soup, have some soup, have some soup, have some soup!
I know what she’ll tell me: Have some soup!

I also changed all the backgrounds/screensavers to say Happy New Year/2008/various firecracker pictures in each of the four computors and eleven log-ons in my house. Only two of which having passwords I should know.

(19, Purple Panda) Yes. I took photos of a Ritz cracker (and some others, but the Ritz worked best). Then I blended a bunch of them together and cut out the Muses. The edging was the tricky part.

All the crackers are still whole in the original graphic, by the way. I “painted” soup over the ones in the bowl, and for the ones on the table, I masked out everything except the tablecloth. That’s actually the most fun, because I can move the crackers around as much as I please and they still appear to be underneath the spoon.

The soup was my lunch the other day. Lentil and carrot.

I love Photoshop. I’ve made some really cool pics this past week, including an eye with a reflection of a galaxy.

Last night was AMAZING! We (all ten of the under-thirteen partygoers) hung out and played the Wii until about eleven o’clock, and then we got on our snow gear and had a massive snowball fight outside on my front lawn. Then we went inside for the countdown and went crazy for a minute. Then I went to bed, leaving all my friends ALONE downstairs. But I was tired. And still am. I did this silly thing with my friends Maddy and Michal where we insulted each other via texting madly. It was hilarious and I wish I could post some of the examples on here but they were WAY too inappropriate.

All in all, a great New Year’s Eve.

I’m back! did anyone miss me/ notice my absence? i was at my farm in the middle of rural ontario. it’s really cool at night because there are all these fields covered in untouched snow and you can see the glow of the cities on the sky. it’s hard to describe but it’s cool. although i notice at night driving that there are more homes than there used to be. i kind of miss the scary expanse of blackness there used to be.

I hope everyone had a fab new year. i went to a party which was fun enough. i’m the oldest girl in the circle of families we socialize with so i always have to entertain small children. while my bro and all the guys get to sit in the basement playing video games/ watching movies i have to run around and use up my nonexistent energy playing games whith energetic kids. it’s fun but sometimes i wish i could just be sitting in the basement doing nothing. but this new years was fun. we went to a friends house but their daughter really hurt her knee skiing that day so we kinda just watched movies and it was pretty low key.

i think i figured out my falling asleep problem: i don’t do enough to be properly tired! i need to get more excercise. i go to be at around 11 on the holidays and don’t fall asleep until almost 1. and then i sleep till noon. ;)

We had a New-Year’s Eve party type thing with a few family friends. There were three different parties within the party. One, was the “grown-up” party downstairs where they talked about fireplaces on Antique Road Show, drank wine, and other boring adult things. The second, was the under-8 party, which was in my brother’s room and they drove around a helium blimp and played with the mice and did general under-8-boy things. The third party (the best, in my opinion) was in THF’s room, where we talked about calligraphy, played Apples to Apples, and ate cookies.

Apparently there was a sort of ship’s gathering on the river and a lot of ship-horns went off, but I didn’t hear it. For New Years my family and I watched Ratatouille (because we haven’t seen it and it looked so cute) and then went over to my neighbor’s house for their annual party. Mucho fun, but went to bed at 1:30 because I’m still on East Coast time.

I had a rather dissapointing new year. I looked at the fireworks at midnight through my bedroom window, wishing I was at the first night (city) party that was lighting them.
I didn’t even get to watch the ball drop on tv with anyone because my mom has been very cranky lately and went to bed early so me and my sister had to sit in our rooms with the tv low and pretend to sleep.

Hi PSOP! welcome back. Your schedule looks rather complex.
    And Kagcomix, welcome back too!

Of course it’s rather silly of me to be welcoming people back when I haven’t been around much myself. Has anyone noticed that, or are most of the regulars here from a generation that doesn’t know me? Gosh it’s weird to think how long ago I started Museblogging (not that long ago, only 2 years or so but it seems shorter than that).

    51. Alice- School so soon? La pauvre! I’m sorry.

My New Year was alright. I went to my friend’s party and played a lot of ping pong. I came home today and told my parents about how much I like ping pong and now they’re thinking of getting a table, which surprised me, but in the most pleasant way.

The other night my friend and I had a really good movie night. We watched AVP (which is dreadful but rule #1 of movie night is that you need exactly one awful movie to laugh at), The Shining and Poltergeist. Those were excellent. And she gave me The Last Unicorn, which is my favorite movie from my childhood and am very glad to now own.

I have school tomorrow. I am really dreading it…especially since for the first two weeks all we’re going to be doing in school is working on our projects, and ours is threatening to go down the drain before we even really get started.

75 – I think it would be really interesting to go to a year-round school. I mean, who really cares if the breaks are shorter, because by the end of them you get bored anyways, but you get off more often. How often do you have breaks?

guess what I did today!!!!!!! actualy it’s not that interesting. I woke up around 11, went and was planning on eating a toasted bagel w/butter but it turns out that we have no butter in the house. which is totaly weird becuse we always have a lot of butter. (we can’t keep it on the counters anymore because my cat eats it…..) so i had to settle for a bagel with christmas cheese (i don’t know what it’s actualy called but we only eat it at Xmas) it was quite tasty though the bagel was rather charred. then i had to wait for my mom to finnish packing up the Xmas ornaments (yes i know i should have helped) so that she could take me to woolfits to buy these copic markers for this project i’m doing (personal art project). the markers are really good and give me even tone and i really like them but they are waaaaaaaaaay expensive. i had my babysitting money with me and used it almost all up buying the markers. i needed 8 which cost $61.11 which is an insane amount of money for markers and consequently i didn’t buy a new scetch book, tho i’m almost needing one. but i got really nice colours. it’s a picture of pierates so i get to use pretty dark, rick colours for their clothes. the captain has the long scarlet coat that would be so awesome to wear because it’s long and would billow in the wind. *slips into fantasy of being a pierate captain* hem. sorry, i’ve been waisting you’re time with art supplies….. *looks sheepish*

I, also, may not be on as much as I have been in the past. During the beginning of winter break, I wasn’t on as much just because I was doing family stuff and was rather sick of the computer. Then, later into the week I realized how much I missed the computer, so I came back. Now, I’m re-realizing my general computer addiction, and trying to stop it. So, instead of hopping onto MuseBlog or another website, I’m going to read a book, or do more homework, or something. No, this doesn’t necessarily mean I’ll be spending any less time on MuseBlog, but that could possibly happen.

    Get a huge pot.

You need 4 large pigs’ tails, lots of carrots, a couple of parsnips, a few onions, plenty of potatoes, some stock cubes, and water. Peel the bits that need peeling, chop everything roughly, chuck everything except the potatoes into the pot, bring to the boil and simmer for an hour and a half. Add the potatoes and simmer for another hour or so. Stir well and scoff. It’s actually better next day. Allow to cool overnight and boil it up.

Ok, NOBODY else has any Piepoints© yet, and I’m sitting here with 10,000 that need to be spread evenly. I thought the previous rules would help make this fair, but I’ll have to change them to at least get them out there.

Piepoints© are very valuable. Still. But, you can trade as many as you want for a service or thing on the blog. I hope changing that from the original of only one piepoint© per trade would help spread them out faster. But usually you won’t want to trade very many because they are still valuable.

There is technically no limit to how many you can have. Just please be kind and don’t hog thousands at a time unless nobody else wants any (like me right now)

You don’t have to list Piepoints with a © symbol if you don’t want to, and OK, you can put it in your name any way you wish. But DO put it in your name, how many piepoints you have, so people know.

Hello, all! I’m here for another life update.

I went back to school on Wednesday, which I expected to be quite depressing, though it wasn’t that bad. Having a three-day week was nice coming back, I like “easing” back into school. We also had a 2-hour delay on Wednesday, and although I was already awake, it was quite nice. I finally figured out all this wave-stuff with Quantum Mechanics, which makes me very happy because now it’s actually fun, instead of just tedious Chemistry work.

My mom also had her follow-up-surgery visit appointment thing last week, and she’s allowed to drive and do “whatever she thinks she can.” She does have to have Chemotherapy, though, and a very strong kind, because the cancer was found in the lymph nodes around the colon (which means it’s most likely somewhere else as well). She’s getting a port put in next week, so it’s easier to give the chemo.

I guess I don’t really have anything else to report, except that I’m reading Games Ancient and Oriental and How to Play Them, and I really like it. It’s really interesting–now I only have to drag my father into playing the games with me :D

You can play it with an ordinary chess set — just let all the non-pawns move like queens. The game moves faster if you let the pawns (latruncles) move like pawns in chess. Otherwise it takes a while for them to engage one another.

Go is a great game. The only problem is finding people to play it with you.

    Soil Explorations

In this report, I will be comparing two different pieces of land in order to find the best for growing potatoes and corn.
Soil is very important to our ecosystem. It is composed of small pieces of weathered rock combined with organic material (humus). It is formed in a combination of two ways. The first is when the bedrock, or parent rock, in this case, begins to weather. Instead of being one huge sheet of rock, parts of it are smaller pieces of rock – though they are still quite large, and not soil yet. These rocks continue to weather until they form tiny grains of rock. This can be considered soil, but plants can’t really grow in it until it mixes with the other component of soil – humus. Humus is decayed plant and animal matter. When a plant or animal dies, the nutrients in its body break down into humus. Humus mixed with the extremely weathered pieces of rock makes soil.
The arrangement of the four main layers, or horizons, as they’re called, of soil in order is called a soil profile. Soil profiles are used to measure the depth of each horizon to determine many things, such as the different kinds of plants and animals that could live there.

A drawing of a soil profile

Soil conditions depend on quite a few things. Poor texture and aeration/porosity of soil, no matter how chemically perfect it is, can make a poor soil. The drainage is also a huge factor, one that is affected by the porosity of the soil. Few plants thrive when stewing in water that has been there for a while, which is why it is important for soil to have good drainage.
Many elements/chemicals are very important for the nutrition of plants growing in a soil. The three I will be considering are probably the most important – nitrogen, phosphorus, and potassium. Without just one of these three, plants can do incredibly poorly. The last chemical component that I will be considering is the pH of the soil. Different plants require different acidities/alkalinities. While one plant may do wonderfully in soil with high alkalinity, another may die because of the soil’s lack of acidity.
The last thing to consider is the animals living in the soil. Earthworms in particular are especially important to the quality of soil. These creatures deposit feces rich in nutrients into the soil, which helps plants grow. They also dig through the soil, which breaks up large clumps that may be in the soil that might make it difficult for plant roots to penetrate. This also creates pore spaces in the soil, helping water drain through the soil and out.
The purpose of the soil investigations, which I will be analyzing in a few ways, was to see the different qualities of soil in depth.
    Results
In order to fully compare the two soils I will decide how to compare them. According to my research, potatoes and corn both need good drainage (High mL/seconds). That is one of the main things I have to consider while deciding which site to use for growing potatoes and corn. Another thing I have to consider is the pH level. My sources say that an acidity level of about 6.5 is ideal pH for the soil for corn. For potatoes, the pH can be anywhere from 4.8 to 6.5. Another enormous factor in the soil quality is the amount of animal life in the area. Earthworms are mentioned in the background information section, and they are probably the most important creatures that live in soil. Something that makes an enormous difference in the quality of the crop is the weather and temperature of the area. Corn thrives in warm, fairly rainy climates with a temperature of about 20° Celsius. Potatoes do best in slightly lower temperatures, about 10 – 15° Celsius. The last thing to consider is the depth of the O and A horizons. As horizon B is denser and harder to penetrate, deep-rooted plants such as potatoes benefit from deeper O/A horizons.
Potassium is an extremely valuable nutrient for both potatoes and corn. It increases the production of proteins, strengthening the plant and its fruit, and it helps a plant’s roots absorb nutrients and water in its soil, making more efficient work of its resources. In Site #1, the level of potassium in the soil is very high, and it is the ideal potassium level for any plant. In Site #2, the potassium level in the soil is very low, which is poor nutrient value for just about any plant. Obviously, Site #1 is my definite preference as far as potassium is concerned.
Phosphorus is not as vital as potassium, but it is still a good nutrient to have in soil used for both potatoes and corn. It encourages the growth of the plant and helps the plant grow strong fruits. In Site #1, the amount of phosphorus in the soil is almost identical to the phosphorus level in the soil of Site #2: they both have very low amounts of phosphorus. Judging only the phosphorus, both soils would be equally inadequate.
Nitrogen helps plants grow above the ground, and they contribute to the green color that signifies a healthy plant. Site #1 had medium levels of nitrogen, and Site #2 had low levels of nitrogen. I think that Site #1 had a better nitrogen content than Site #2.
PH is the measurement of acidity or alkalinity in a substance. Both corn and potatoes do best in the higher level of neutral alkalinity/acidity, pH levels of about 5 and 6. Site #1 had soil with a pH of 5.17, which is just about perfect. Site #2 had soil that was slightly more acidic than the ideal pH for potatoes and corn, a pH of 4. These would both be reasonable levels of acidity for corn and/or potatoes, but the pH from Site #1 is slightly more favorable.
The color of the soil may seem irrelevant, but the truth is that the darker the soil, the more organic material, such as rich humus, is in the soil, and the more organic material, the more nutrients are in the soil. The soil in Site #1 had a slightly pale color in both horizons, suggesting less-than-plentiful nutrient supplies. The soil in Site #2 was dark brown, with red and black veins occasionally – a fine color for soil nutrients. Both sites had perfectly soil color, but Site #2’s color was definitely better for potatoes and corn.
The texture of soil shows how loose and aerated the soil is, and how much water was absorbed and kept after rainfall. Corn and potatoes do best in soil more aerated than clay, but less than small rocks. The soils in both sites were relatively similar. In horizons O and A, the soil was crumbly and a bit clumpy, dry, and it fell apart relatively easily. In horizon B, the soil became easier to mold, more clumpy, and moist. In other words, they were both silt-like in horizons O and A, and became more clay-like in horizon B. As far as texture is concerned, they were equally perfect for potatoes and corn.
The animal life in soil, especially invertebrates such as earthworms, play enormous parts in the quality of soil. These creatures create pore spaces in the soil so that water can drain, among other things mentioned earlier. In Site #1, we found dozens of small creatures in our soil, including nine earthworms in about 5 square inches of land. In Site #2, no earthworms were found, and very few small creatures at all were in our soil. Site #1 undoubtedly is better for aeration in that sense, so it makes me wonder if there was some sort of a mistake in the drainage test – we tested soil only a few feet away, yet it took quite a while for soil to drain. The quantity of earthworms on its own should have doubled the mL/second.
The weather and temperature of an area affects the plant’s growth. Neither site was any good for temperature – they were both considerably lower than the desired temperatures of potatoes and corn. But the temperatures were measured after the growing season for both plants, when it was beginning to get cold. The same goes for the weather. We knew how the weather had been for the past few days, but not for the past few seasons. This makes it impossible for me to determine which had better weather and temperature for potatoes and corn.
The depth of the soil horizons, as I mentioned earlier, has a big impact on the fruits of the potatoes, seeing as they grow underground. The deeper the O and A horizons, the better. Site #1’s A horizon was considerably deep – 25 centimeters. That is a bottomless hole compared to the 11 centimeters in Site #2. Especially for potatoes, Site #1 wins for horizon depth.
It is my opinion that Site #1 had better overall soil for growing potatoes and corn. One of my biggest concerns, however, is the drainage of the soil. Potatoes especially could rot if it took 241 seconds just for 400 mL of water to drain. As for the color of the soil, I’m not worried, because I know that the soil has plenty of potassium, phosphorus, and nitrogen.

Wow! Tabs work when you copy and paste! (although undoubtedly they’ll disappear when they appear on the actual site)

so i was practicing my solo for solo+ensemble and it has this fast bit with triplets and dotted eighth sixteenths and it’s really hard, so i was practicing that and i hear this whirring noise behind me. so i stop and turn around and something flies out straight at my head. i thought it was a small bird at first.
background info about my house, the attic is connected to my room by a door, so it must’ve gotten into the attic and under the crack in the door (it’s a big crack, like almost an inch)
anyway, i just kind of duck and watch it and i’m like “wow, a bird! sweet!” It just flies around my head and hits the wall/ceiling (i have a weird slopey ceiling thing) and it falls down and apparently went back under the crack because i went over and didn’t see it. so i call my dad up, and he comes up with a box and traps it. i think it was playing dead, because it looked half-stunned, but it flew away fine when we let it out later.

anyway, it turned out to be a really teeny bat. when mom hears this, she freaks because she’s reeeally scared of bats. i was just like “ha! even sweeter!” so we brought it outside and let it out and it flew away. we figured it heard the trumpet playing and it sounded like another bat or something since it was fast high notes and all

So that is officially my amazing story of the day

At one point someone said they made a small hpb snowman and dyed it. i was reading a joke book when i read-

    What’s pink, icy, and dangerous?

The answer was a shark-infested slushie, but i remembered ur snowman (who built it? WHO BUILT IT?) and thought u may want to know.

Also, all u musers who’ve been reading the world’s greatest mag for a while, please take out ur may/june 2006 (the languages and talking one) and go to pg. 45. there u will find probably the only hate mail received by muse.

For a while i thought i knew the person who had written it, but couldn’t find the mag to check. Now ive found it, and discovered the last initial to be wrong.

But id like to notice that when i put my nerd status on the welcome, newcomers! 2008 thread, someone responded that we’re all nerds cuz muse is a nerdy mag.

so the hate mail writers were right about that, though they shouldn’t have put it so meanly.

    And the pic, was disturbing.

Im not saying they were right though, understand. My point is that although most of it was true, this does not make muse a bad mag or that article boring.

And even if it was, true musers don’t mind a couple boring articles for a million other ones that are GREAT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

This means that, luckily, musers that have meanies inside them will be sorted away eventually, and in the end it will just be us who are true.

I couldn’t decide where to post this, so I’m just going to post it here. (This might be long: be warned)

Last night, I was reading the Writing Theme with Variations thread, and thinking of ideas for my story. Then, I remembered the time when I first suggested chopstick painting on the blog:

    65. Purple Panda | June 27th, 2006 at 2:37 pm

I like using a sharpened chopstick and ink.

    Does anyone do calligraphy?

Then, I continued to read the posts on the Visual Arts thread (https://musefanpage.com/blog/?p=404), and it made me really happy. I remember when we were discussing art with Rebecca, and it was really really fun. She gave great suggestions, inspiration, and motivation. Here’s the post where she described painting the Chinatown pictures (like the one on the Writing Theme/Variations thread)

    75. Rebecca Lasley | June 28th, 2006 at 7:22 am

    Report on Chopstick Experiments

Wow, they’re great! I spent the morning whittling and sharpening a variety of chopsticks (both manual and electric pencil sharpeners will do the trick). Drawing was a bit awkward at first, as with anything new, but I love the marks they make. They also hold more ink than I would have thought. They’re perfectly suited to the quick sketches I’m doing right now (of DC’s Chinatown, by appropriate coincidence), even better than the pens I was using, as they’re forcing me to modify my drawing style in a direction I wanted to go anyway. The plain sharpened ones work best so far — and the side creates lovely shading — but the shaped ones make nice special effects. Bamboo skewers aren’t bad, either, though I clip the points slightly with scissors. Yay! I’m thrilled. *hugs Purple Panda* (by your leave)

This reminded me of the first time I tried to draw with chopsticks–it was incredibly hard, because you had to draw really quickly otherwise the ink would run out. This was completely different than anything else I had ever done; previously I had taken hours to draw a few lines (not hours, but I was quite a perfectionist). I haven’t done any visual-arts type thing in a long time. I used to take painting classes and have a gigantic box filled with oil and acrylic paints, but I haven’t used them since last year. I have always liked to do art, but I always thought I was rather dreadful at it. Then, I read Rebecca’s post:

    84. Rebecca Lasley | June 29th, 2006 at 11:29 am

Ebeth, and other nonartists, should you wander by this thread again, could you tell me what makes you think you can’t draw? (the straight-line answer does not count). What would make drawing enjoyable or interesting enough to try?

And, this got me thinking. Sure, some people just naturally seem better at drawing than others, but why can’t everyone draw? I thought about this all night, and this morning while I was running around getting ready for school (at a depressingly early hour of 6 am), I grabbed a small (very small, actually: about 3 1/2 by 5 1/2 inches) blank note/sketchbook, which I have had for years but never used. I drew on the bus, in homeroom, while waiting for class to start, on the bus home, and a little while after I got home before I started my homework. And it was really fun! I know they weren’t very good, but it’s nice to have a little sketchbook to carry around — then I have something to do when I’m bored, and I can practice getting better at drawing. So, I have decided to give my lack-of-visual-art-talent another try.

So, in the next few months I shall be busy drawing, and writing about Rebecca’s drawing (which has given me flamablamablous inspiration for a story), and it shall be very fun and happyful.

And, I know that this should go on the suggestions thread, but since it’s after my long post about Visual Arts, I’ll ask it here. Can we have a new Visual Arts thread? We haven’t had one since July 2007.

And I’m really wimpy when it comes to pain, so I don’t want to do it tonight, and I’m trying to think what I’m going to wear tomorrow so I know what earring to put in (if they’re already out, I might as well put in something different, eh?)

Hey guys. I’ll probably receive the same lack of attention as I usually do, but I’m looking to get rid of my Muses, and I think it’d be a terrible tragedy to throw them away. Is there some sort of Muse-eum I can send them to?

Note: Wonderful and Magnificent removed because a. everybody already knows that and b. I don’t like the way that looks in acronym form.

I’d like to get rid of my Muses because they’ve been sitting on the same shelf in my closet for over five years. Granted (ha ha ha, I hate it when people use that word), I get one down now and again to peruse, but by and large they’re merely taking up space. In addition, I’d quite like to arrange it so that others might enjoy them, especially the really old ones. Like the one about the creation of the moon, or the life on other planets one.

By the way, I had the pleasure of chatting briefly with Carl Sagan in the early 1980s when he appeared on Larry King’s old late-night radio show. About a dozen of us from the network staff gathered in the hallway outside Studio A to watch the broadcast. During breaks we caught Sagan’s attention by waving “Happy Birthday” signs in the windows. But before air time, Larry invited us into the green room, and we had some time to talk. I am happy to report that Dr. Sagan was utterly charming and endured our silliness with grace.

Now I have to study! Luckily I have a whole hour tomorrow after school and before rehearsal that I can spend reading my book! I will talk in exclamation points, I am so overwhelmingly happy!!!!!!!

I guess my sticking around and playing with the buzzers second tutorial was really useful, because I can’t imagine my test scores were that great…
Or maybe they were. Maybe I just made a lot of really good guesses.

My state has a state-wide math competition and I got 4th or something for my age group (in the region) so I get to go to the state competition! I can’t wait! I’ve been a couple times before, but I’ve never gotten a trophy or anything. That’s my goal this year. ^_^
