    We (the Etheterre people) should come up with a proper Xixin language. I came up with a bunch of words and loose grammar a while ago, but I forgot it all.

    Hablo un poco español. Aprendo español por dos años, pero no aprendo muchas palabras básico.

    Como dice en otros lugares, de Kinder hace quarto grado hable Espanol para much de la dia durante escuela. Pero es much mas dificil cuando no he hablado (excepto en el Internet) para casi tres años. (Si, yo se que no tengo much de los acentos que necesitaban estar en mis letras, pero no quiero buscar para ellos)
    Entonces…quales otras personas aqui hablan Espanol?

    It’s not fair that we can’t communicate in sign langauge on this thread. :(

    (Not really. Sign language is one of the three “official” languages I could reasonable communicate in, though.

  22. Yaaaaay! Languages!
    Or should I say: Aaaaaaayay! Anguageslay!

    Here’s the super easy language I like to confuse my friends with:
    1. Take any word and divide it in half.
    2. Take the second half and put it at the front of the word.
    3. If the word has an uneven amount of letters, make the part you stick in front the smaller portion.

    So “I totally love Muse” would be:
    “I llytota velo Semu”.

And then I thought about a person speaking a language when they only knew one word in it. Then, I thought about how I don’t know a lot of Spanish words, but I know the word for “book”. Then I thought about myself running around a street full of Spanish speaking people shouting, “Libros! Libros!” That would be hilarious.

    Pie 0
    Squid 0
  139. 212 -. All swearwords in Hebrew are taken from English or Arabic, so swearing in Hebrew would be the same as swearing in English, just with an Israeli accent. Swearwords translated literally don’t have the same connotation. I know that there are a lot of swearword-type Hebrew phrases (the result of some of my classmates doing dirty-word patrol in 9th grade) and there’s also the “curse you” types of phrases, like “may a rock fall on your head” which can be used in any language. But if the person you’re talking to doesn’t know Hebrew, it sounds much scarier.

  141. Hi, Cliff Eagle – Yes, swearing in any language on MuseBlog is snipworthy.
    I do think it’s an interesting topic of discussion—though tricky to carry out here.
    Here’s one interesting thing I’ve come across: For the Dutch, it’s common to swear by shouting out the word for a disease. As in shouting “Tuberculosis!” (except in Dutch) if someone bumped into them without apologizing .

Under an alter ego…Well, whoever it was just narrowed down the possibilities of who he or she could be, because it references Hebrew twice, not to mention that the verb conjugations use a system very similar to the Hebrew one. Therefore the person who made it up probably speaks Hebrew at least a little bit. And I know that most MBers don’t speak Hebrew. Who knows. Maybe I’m just overnanalyzing. Je parle un peu de français, et un plus petit peu de chinois. Je ne sais pas comment faire des lettres en chinois à l’ordinateur. Chinois est très difficile de comprendre parce que les signes sont faciles de confondre et d’écrire pas correct. Un jour, j’espère que je peux parle beaucoup de langues très bien. Est-ce qu’il y a une personne qui veut parler français avec moi ?

  178. Die Geschichte vom Fliegenden Robert.

    Wenn der Regen neiderbraust,
    Wenn der Sturm das Feld durchsaust,
    Bleiben Mädchen oder Buben
    Hübsch daheim in ihren Stuben:
    Robert aber dachte: Nein!
    Das muf drauken herrlich sein!
    Und im Felde patscheter
    Mit dem Regen schirm umher.

    Hui, wie pfeift der Sturm und keucht,
    Daf der Baum sich nieder beught!
    Seht! den Schirm erfaft der Wind,
    Und der Robert flieght geschwind.
    Durch die Luft so hoch, so weit;
    Niemand hört ihn, wenn er schreit.
    An die Wolken stöft er schon,
    Und der Hut fliegt auch davon.

    Schirm und Robert fliegen dort
    Durch die Wolken immerfort.
    Und der Hut fliegt weit voran,
    Wo der Wind sie hinge tragen,
    Ja! das weif kein Mensch zu sagen.

    these really confuse me- are the contractions due to the nature of the language, or are they there just because it is being sung? hmmm

    When the rain comes tumbling down
    In the country or the town,
    All good little girls and boys
    Stay at home and mind their toys.
    Robert thought; “No, when it pours,
    It’s better out of doors.” Rain it did,
    And in a minute Bob was in it;
    Here you see him, silly fellow,
    Underneath his red umbrella!

    What a wind! Oh! How it whistles
    Through the trees and flowers and thistles!
    Oh! It has caught his red umbrella!
    Now look at him, silly fellow,
    Up he flies to the skies!
    No one heard his screams and cries!
    Through the clouds the rude wind bore him,
    And his hat flew on before him;
    And the hat went up so high,
    That it really touch’d the sky.

    Soon they got to such a height,
    They were nearly out of sight.
    No one ever yet could tell
    Where they stopp’d or where they fell.
    Only this one thing is plain,
    Bob was never seen again…

  197. (316) Mark Twain, eh? *searches* Aha! Here’s his version.

    When the rain comes down a-dash,
    When the storms the meadows lash,
    Boys and girls stay snug at home
    Preferring to let others roam;
    But Robert thinks, “Ah, me,
    It’s just the time outside to be!”
    and so, umbrella’d safe and sound,
    Takes to the fields and slops around.

    My! how shrieks the windy storm,
    and how the big tree bows its form!
    Hoho! the ‘brella’s caught the breeze,
    And Robert sails above the trees!
    Above the houses, church and steeple,
    and out of sight of all [the] people!
    Above the clouds he spins at last,
    His hat is gone, and he’s aghast!

    And so he sails and sails and sails,
    Through banks of murky clouds, and wails,
    And weeps and mourns, poor draggled rat,
    Because he can’t o’ertake his hat.
    Oh, where on high can that hat be?
    When you find out, pray come tell me.

    Anyway, here’s the English translation:

    Venus is the first to appear in the sky
    the oldest bat is just waking up,
    caressing quietly the red roof tiles and gray walls;
    the bird from dark places weaves the new night

    Here we lay, unable to get out of this castle of ashes,
    the night, that giant net, having fallen upon us,
    it captivates me underneath, caught in a net of sadness
    here I lie, unable to explain what’s happening.

    This is a fortress of fears and the palest of grasss
    this is a cathedral of tears and hollow men
    this is a desert without a yesterday, the shortest tomorrow
    here lies the body of what was once a people.

    Many flowers are said to grow in the faraway life
    but everything that enters this jail has reached the grave
    to the border of the gallows of the weaver bats
    look closely and see just how we swing.

    In the dark I’m writing these verses, under lock and key

  213. .339 as piggy says it is Japanese, but it is easy to mix up the “principle” asian languages (Chinese, Japanese, Korean) if you aren’t used to looking at them. You can tell it’s Korean if there’s a lot of roundness to the characters. It’s Chinese if all of it is complex, compound type characters (it looks more dense than Japanese or Korean). The difference between Japanese and Chinese is that Japanese incorporates kana– two “alphabets” of syllables in addition to using characters derived from Chinese. So when looking at Japanese it is both hard and soft. Korean also uses the Chinese characters to some extent since both Korean and Japanese are to some extent derived from Chinese, but I don’t know much about Korean. I do know how to say “I love you”, albeit with a horrible accent.

    I used to never be able to tell apart spoken Chinese from Japanese, from Korean etc, much less tell the written languages apart. It takes a bit of practice, is all.

  229. Here’s a little japanese lesson! But first– we’ve learned katakana and hiragana and have ongoing study of kanji.

    Katakana is used for foreign names/places and occasionally for emphasis I believe. It’s the simplest of the three alphabets.

    ex: ア カ サ タ ナ
    if you can see those, each one is a katakana “character”. They are “a” “ka” “sa” “ta” and “na”

    Hiragana is more curved and used to complete kanji phrases. This is where it differs from Chinese, which relies totally on “hanzi” (I think that’s what they’re called!). see aggie’s post for what I mean.

    ex: あ か さ た な
    Hiragana for a, ka, sa, ta, and na. An example of hiragana “completing” a phrase: この魚は大きい。
    “That fish is big”
    この=”kono”=that
    éš = “sakana” = fish
    は i= a particle (in this case pronounced as “wa” although it is read as “ha” when not functioning as a particle). Denotes what something is, etc
    大きい = “ookii” = big. Notice how the first character is kanji, but the other two are hiragana.

  238. 389- It’s not necessarily a type of dog. It’s also an exclamation, as in my usage of it, and a state in Mexico. Possibly other things as well. Oh, and you don’t need an apostrophe in “chihuahuas”. Or an inverted comma, or whatever you want to call it. Depends on how British you are feeling.
