♥ is a symbol, but “heart” is a word.
I really love the spelling of Celtic names. Unfortunately, the pronunciation is often a great disappointment to me. Aodhnait, for example, is simply pronounced, “AY-net.”
I like the name Owen.
I like a lot of fantasy names. Like Lirael.
Or…yeah. There are others, but Lirael is an amazing name.
My friend Eva keeps trying to change her name to Eva (pronounced AY-va, as opposed to EE-va), but I don’t think it’s working. I always forget.
There are lots of ways to spell Alice.
Alys
Alyss
Alis
Allis
Allys
Those are the ons that spell check didn’t grab. Here are the ones that it did:
Allyss
Alliss
Aliss
And the biology teacher calls me Lucy.
For “What’s in a Name”:
Boring, I know.
My name is my real name.
My mother named me Alice for reasons that I can’t remember. I think it was after the Most Famous Alice who has Adventures in Wonderland
((3rd 2nd post!))
Lucy? *scoots away*
Please don’t laugh: My brother calls me Mimi. And that’s my only nickname in RL.
On the computer, though, my nicknames are:
AvalonGirl the Great MuseBlogger
Does anyone like poems? What’s your favorite poem format?
Here’s a haiku and something else that’s still a poem:
MuseBloggers pwn you
GAPAs keep watch
But we love MuseBlog!
Many people come
Using computers
Seeing friends
Every pie is special
Bet you can’t meet me in Real Life
Let’s be friends here then
On MuseBlog as you’re
Getting pied in the face!
What’s in a name:
Raynpho is a mixture of the first syllable of my name and the first syllable of my sister’s. It was originally for an account we shared, on a different site, and I use it for pretty much everything I need a username for now. Creative, eh?
I just remembered that my very first post was under the name “Icefire,” or something of the like. Which means it was made in 2006, the peak of the Warriors craze in our school… does anyone (aka. GAPAs) know where exactly my first post was?
4-Wow. iThink I might of seen you back then on the blog.
Do any GAPAs know when I first posted on MuseBlog? If yes, where? And if yes, under what name?
[It looks as if your first name was Fairydragon. You can look it up on the “Who’s Here” page. –Robert]
4- Icefire isn’t Warriors… It’s that dragon series. The Fire Within, Icefire, something-or-other-fire, and I think there’s a fourth one…
(4) The earliest comment I can find is under the name “Raynpho (I am not a dornick), posted in November 2007. You make a reference to having posted earlier, but you must have used a different address, as I can’t find anything. “Icefire” doesn’t show up anywhere. You’ll have to look through “Who’s Here” and see if you recognize your original name.
-gaspeth- There is a fourth one!
!!! Maybe whatsisname comes back to life (did he die?) or something. I never read the third one, anyway.
But here’s the list:
The Fire Within
Icefire
Fire Star (I recall being enormously frustrated because the library didn’t have this one, and then when it came I didn’t even read it)
The Fire Eternal
Dang, now I have to go find and read them.
I got this name from the fact that my first comment was:
130. the man for aeiou | July 29th, 2006 at 10:39 am
carrw running mate has to be aeiou
I made it up in 30 seconds.
I hit apon my name when we needed one for a school blogging project by combining the Hawai’ian princess KAIulani with the explorer Jacques-YVES Cousteau.
I liked the “ai” and “yv” letter combinations. You don’t see many “yv”s in English!
11- Is it pronounced KYE or KAY?
Oh goody! I was origginily Go Bananas!!!!!, posted first in Nov. of 2007, and my first post was “I dunno. What ARE we talking about?” Then I go througha lot of names until I got to this one, which I am determined to keep. Leafy green likes nature. I just like my name! I also have this really pretty midnght blue velvet like dress that I wore for Halloween last year, and I truly feel like Zinc the sorceress in it.
I have this stuffed penguin that I named penguini. I took its name for my own and then it called me names, most of them rude.
My original name–Elentari–meant “Queen of the Stars” in Elvin. Now “Nthanda” means star in Tumbuka. Bit of a theme there, hmm?
My real name (and I’m assuming I can post this) is Sarah, which means princess in Hebrew. I looked on Behindthename.com (my pretty much favorite place EVER for character names) and there are like a billion variations–from “Mor” in Irish to (my favorite) “Zarita”. *Sigh*…I love names and etymology. I could go on and on…but I won’t.
6- I never read that series, but Icefire was made up from the standard for the names they use for their characters.
Maybe it was Icepaw, or something of the like… I’ll go look.
7- It was under a different IP address, I think, so it probably won’t show up under this one.
11- How exactly is it pronounced?
I originally used my horse’s name… And then somewhere along the way I wrote to Muse as “The Nearly Omnipotent Haley”, and, well, I rather liked the sound of “TNO”. And umlauts are just cool.

On a somewhat different note…
Leporiphobia: the fear of rabbits.
My name is the most boring name in the world (my real one, and, ok, my blogname too).
I like the name “Euterpe”. I also like the names “Amaryllis”, and “VeslemØy” it’s fun to say “VeslemØy, VeslemØy, VeslemØy” yay! Please don’t ask me how you pronounce that.
13- I remember you as Go Bananas(!!!!) That was before I became a big poster though…
“ZVX” for those who dn’t know, is an acronym for “Zoufled Verbil Xerix”. Don’t ask.
I imagine that AvalonGirl is a redhead, and Beatlesrockr is a brunette. What does anyone think I look like?
Oh, sorry for the double post, GAPAs, will you ever add “ZVX” to “Mouse” on who’s here?
Oh, you do not want to know where my name came from.
Tell us!!!!!!111!!!!!!1!!!!!!!!!!11!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
18- What are you talking about? Your real name is great.
20- I imagine a crazy sorceress-magician-mad scientist type person, with metallic hair and a crackling electric staff. For a few seconds anyway, until I get my senses back. Then you look like a brunette, sitting at her computer.
What about me?
22- Where?
20- I imagine you as a girl with green hair, a long purple robe and a pointy starry hat.
And occasionally a tall girl with red hair.
My nickname is that of a annoying cartoon bear.
25- A brunnette, maybe with blue streaks in her hair, wearing a long sleeved wispy blue shirt and a lavender skirt. I have no idea why. And how about Leafygreen?
26- Yogi? Snrk. *bursts out laughing* A brunetteish redhead, wearing a red blouse and a yellow skirt with red flowers hold a Beatles “number hits” CD.
OK, OK.
When I first came on, I called myself captain_cynomys because Cynomys is the scientific name for prairie dog, and I was obsessed with prairie dogs. Later, when I was obsessed with the Edge chronicles, I changed it to Prarilius Canix. When Museica came along, I couldn’t sail the seas and be a Prime Muser at the same time, so my first alter ego, Sir Ozlips (named after a character in a book by Mark Crilley) was born. Later, on the Pieceful Pie Planet, I became Oob, just because I liked the sound of the name. Finally, I got sick of switching between alter egos, so I collated all my initials into POSOC.
I like Behind the Name too. The little rating thing is fun, and I found some good names. Like Corryn.
The explanation of my two names.
fellowmuser = (duh – I was 9 and extremely unimaginative)
Kokonilly = Ah, that’s more interesting. KOKOpelli + NILLYbuckbuck.
A nillybuckbuck is an idiotic genius.
28- Actually it’s Archie
Why don’t we all take this “guessing what people look like” to the Lets Get Physiognomical or how ever you spell that.
About words we like, I once made a list of cool sounding words, (e.g. Sarcophagus, Trickle, Goober)
Sorry for the double post, but I forgot to include Flamablamablous in my list, and also, we could make a really long one all together…
I lost my 2 page list a while ago, but I could probably remember at least 20.
20-I wish.
I’m a brunette with blond tips.
Does anyone ever remember seeing someone named Fairydragon on the blog? If so, when?
This is my real name. Except my middle name is Taylor not Tay.
I love writing lists of names. I always go on that namevoyager website that was in Muse. It’s really fun and it explains why there’s so many people named Jacob in the Tiny Tigers Taekwondo.
My spell check doesn’t recognize the word taekwondo. Yarrr.
(35) Here, among other places:
https://musefanpage.com/blog/?p=345#comment-11
I suppose Fairydragon might have been your sister, if you have one.
What’s in a name? That which we call a rose/ by any other word would smell as sweet.
I like iambic pentameter. Actually, I like any rhythmic poetry… trochaic heptameter is just as nice in theory, but much more rare. Or… whatever The Hunting Of The Snark was written in, it was pretty cool.
Names: I think I’ve explained mine before, but I will again anyway.
My real name is Annie. It is a derivative of Hannah, which I think meant something along the lines of “grace of God.” Somewhat of a misnomer as I am a clumsy atheist. I was named after Anne of Green Gables, I believe.
My first blog name was curious and questioning, which I made up spur-of-the-moment to express my inquisitive nature properly. That’s all.
Currently I go by Dodecahedron. This was my role in a school play adaption of The Phantom Tollbooth a few years ago, and it is my favorite role to date.
I may also be seen (infrequently here, but more common in other places) as tetracontakaidigon. A tetracontakaidigon is a 42-sided polygon.
I like words. Words beginning with an s seem especially pretty. My computer is named singularity, and I attempted to name my hard drive sonance. also good: stellate, sidereal… can’t think of more, but I know they’re there.
I have a thesaurus in my room which I misuse often. Open to a random page, find the most interesting word, and hop through synonyms.
37-…yeah.
That was me two years ago. I was…weird, to say the least.
…Then again, I might be weirder now…I don’t know.
(38) “The Hunting of the Snark” can be scanned in a couple of different ways. I’d probably call it 4/3/4/3 irregular (mostly amphibrachic, with iambs and trochees thrown in). Amphibrachs, dactyls, and anapests can overlap, depending on where you start counting.
If you like rollicking meters, you might try Swinburne or Dante Gabriel Rossetti. They’re unfashionable nowadays, but they could make poems sing.
I like the word impasse. It sounds rawther elegant, don’t you think?
12, 16- It’s prounounced KYE Yee-ves.
Isn’t the word “alfalfa” just inherently funny?
42 – And if you say alfalfa backwards, it’s aflafla!
Since a list of all my favorite words would probably bore you by being so long, I present my favorite math words!
quaternion (A spelling word and a math word in one)
modulo (It sounds cool.)
dodecahecatonkaidecahedron (More commonly known as a Bucky ball. How can you not love this one?)
More later (probably).
Hi, speller! Drop by the Hare & Hedgepig sometime and let us know what you’ve been up to.
Serendipity. It’s such a cool word. I just can’t even stand it.
15- Elentari! I missed your name change I guess. I’m e~a if you missed mine. I love behindthename .com too! My favorite name site is namenerds.com / uucn (I think that is the site’s url; you can find it in the behind the name links spot) uucn stands for Unusual, Unique and Creative Names
Question: does anyone know any great names that start with O? it is for a character… Female names please.
What is in a name: Oxlin is something I came up with because I liked the sound of it.
My real name is rather dull but no one uses it ever. I go by Sally as my real name. (my parents call me Sally too, they picked it. It isn’t my favorite name but it is unique for people my age.)
I like the word infinite.
(46) Female names starting with O: Ophelia, Olivia, Oleanna, Octavia, Orla, Oona.
Ophelia…isn’t that the name of one of the charecters in Spider magazine? I used to read that ALL the time before I started subscribing to Muse!
My real name is dull too, but everyone’s been calling me by my nickname since I was one and a half. I like my nickname better. By the by, are we allowed to say our real names here? Or would that be bad?
SUPERCALIFRAGELISTICEXPIALIDOCIOUS! Sorry about that. I’m a bit hyper this afternoon.
46 – In addition to the ones Robert said: Oceana, Odelia, Oki, Oksana, Olena, Olga, Olive, Opal (coughcough), Omana, Orianne, Othelia.
45- I agree, I like the word “serendipity”.
46- Infinite is a cool word. Also infinity.
A few words I think sound very cool:
Vanguard
Palisade
Anole
Words I think sound funny:
Smock
Freezer fur
Cactus
My sister’s name means “clear, tranquil, serene” that is totally the opposite of her. And mine means “honoring, praising” or something about “god” I can’t remember. And it’s kind of the opposite of me you could say. If there is an opposite of praise. Oh wait, yes, criticism
.
Beavo was invented by me and my “clique” of friends in fifth grade. He was a cartoon beaver, with the general attire of Zorro (mask, cape, sword, boots, and feathered hat). We added “the Great” after Beavo, (which was also my first MB name). His enemy was Dr. Wood who shot giant splinters out of cannons, his sidekick was Baby Spud, a potato, and Baby Spud’s pet was called Tater Dawg.
Yup, we were lame back then too.
Anyway. I got bored of “the Great” and changed it to “Online Stalker”, added “Spy Dude Person”, and when the blog went through techhnical difficulties, I deleted all the other words and replaced them with (“(and such)”, added spdzk points, and eventually just shortened it to Beavo.
Sorry about all the weirdness in the last post, the comment box dissapeared pretty early on.
marfwarrioir…………..marfis something so gross you dont want to know about. ask kokonilly. warrior is from the warriors series. [snip! –Admin.] my normal name has a very literal meaning. i shant say it because it is very uncommon. i like names. on bunny apocalypse i imagine myself as this picture my friend drew of me as a catninja. it is awesome. i think i shall add the capitals back into my name.
Has IBCF actually switched over to “Cyanical?”
54 – What? MARF stands for Misis mumford And Ridiculous Fun, right? How is that gross? Anyway, your name isn’t that uncommon. And, what was snipped? It seems smooth even with the snip. And your name isn’t that literal. You were born in the fall, right?
(56) MARFwarrior started talking about something that happened on another website. That’s what we snipped.
Oh. I see…
46–check out babynamesworld.com. You can search according to what letter you want the name to start with.
More O names: Odiya, Okalani, Ojasvi, Olena, and Onella.
Leafygreen looks totally different in the Blogsphere than in real life. Here, she has blonde hair with black streaks. In real life her hair is a light red-brown.
My original name was Random Kokopelli_97.
My real name is Samantha (Sam), Samantha in most data bases would be put as an American name. But if you look hard enough you will find that it is Hebrew, Greek, and American. It means Flower Goddess.
1-I completely agree! Lirael is a spectacular name!
2-You were named after the Alice in Wonderland Alice? That is awesome!
40-Hurrah for the Hunting of the Snark!
I can’t say my real name, (Parents). But how do you think I look?
(Brendan don’t answer!)
Another math word I like: omega. Yes, this is a math word. It refers to infinity in ordinal numbers.
Speaking of math words and names, has anyone heard of Stigler’s Law of Eponymy?
63-
If I had to choose,
I would be omega,
for the alpha always finds his way
clogged up with other people,
but my path is lonely bliss,
the stars, the moon, and the sun.
Sorry. Off topic. I wrote that a long time ago, so when I read spellers post, it came back.
My blog name has an interesting origin. My brother and I were playing superheroes one time, a little before I returned to MuseBlog for the second time. I needed a superhero name, so we came up with “The Cat’s Meow”. I decided to drop the “The” for my blog name, so I ended up with Cat’s Meow.
In case you guys are wondering (probably not) the Meow in my name is the noun, and Cat’s is an adjective. Or something like that.
My name is Michala. As in all names, it has a story. I can not look or speak my name without feeling my story. I can not tell you my name without giving you a bit of my story. I can not give you my name without giving you my story and myself.
My name means ”What is God?”. It fits. I find God in everything and in nothing.
I do not like my story. I do not like my name.
I call myself Vixen. It is the name I am most comfortable in. It has no story of tears and muck, and therefore, when I call myself it, I am not tears and muck.
I see Vixen in the moon. It is not often that I can see the moon, but the moon can always see me, and I am always in his eyes.
66- Poetic mood?
I was looking up possible blog names when I saw a name that made me think, “The Guy Your Parents Warned You About! That would be perfect!” The rest is history.
61 – Wow, that’s my name, too! *is slightly creeped out*
62-Reddish brown hair. Of course, I already know what you look like from Kokon. pictures, but I don’t like your pictures (sorry!), so I think you look different.
My name is Robin. It comes from a story from grandmother’s life. My grandma was working was working at a German hospital during WW2, and it was winter. She would carry around crushed crushed peanuts in her pocket to eat on the way home. One day, she found a small european robin on the ground (they look much different from the ones in the US.). It was just a baby and it did’nt fly south. So my Gramma fed it some of the peanuts and every day after, at about the same time, she would feed the little bird. Then, the next fall, the little bird excepted one more batch of peanuts. The next day, the little robin did not come. It had flown south. So I was named Robin. Isn’t that lovely? Now what do you think I look like?
Worst male name: Thrackmorton
Best male name: Edward Cullen (jk, Raphael is cooler)
Worst female name: Murgatroid
Best female name: Deidre
Best word: loiter/ loofah
Worst word: moisture
70- O.O Bookworm went to a kokon? WHEN? WHERE ARE THE PICTURES????
66- Depressed. Having control over my life for the first time makes me realize how mucked up my life has been and is. I promise, there’s nothing sweet about me.
70-What kokon? I am unaware of myself going to a kokon! How was I at a kokon? I’ve never been to a kokon! Please explain…
72-I’m as confused as you are! I’ve never been to a kokon.
71–Yeah, any girl’s name with a “Murg” in it is out.
Cool words: Hullabaloo. Pretzal. Heliotrope. Synecdoche. Purloiner. Lexicon.
Boring words: Tooth. Job. Department. Parking.
Cool Names: Adhara. Arista. Astrea. Bellatrix. Tara. Vercingatorix.
Names I’m not so Sure about: Ahtahkakoop. Humphrey.
75- My friend has an uncle Thrackmorton. And he married a woman named Murgatroid. She’s pregnant now; they’re musing over names for the baby *fear*
76- …
You’re joking, right?
WAIT. I keep on getting Bookworm and RtH mixed up. I’m so pathetic.
My blog name’s kind of self-explanatory. So’s my real name (which I won’t say) for that matter…
Best word ever: sesquipedalian. Though I can’t say I don’t like fumagillin, alcarraza, hemeralopia…
Worst word: sheitel
Another good one: Triskadecaphobia.
+ points if you know what that means WITHOUT LOOKING IT UP
Longest officially recognized place name:
Taumatawhakatangihangakoauauotamateapokaiwhenuakitanatahu
heh I think I’ll name my kid that
80 – Fear of 13. And I believe it’s triskaidekaphobia.
72-SHOW US THE PICTURES!!!
Since I will most likely never go to a Kokon, I NEED Kokon pictures.
82-There are no pictures. There was no kokon. Zinc got me mixed up with RtH!
83-Ok. Ok. Sheesh!
I like any word with “thl” in it. I can’t think of any right now, but I know there are some. I also hate it when people mispronounce simple words, like “ask.” It’s fine when people want to ask me a question, but I do not enjoy being axed. Same thing with “milk.” It doesn’t have an “E” in it. It’s not melk.
*FUN FACT ALERT!*
Just a little fun fact-my blog name was actually supposed to be Agrrrlfishi, not Agrrrfishi… but I had a little typo back there when I was a lil ‘phyte, so the name sort of stuck.
86-Whoa.
A Girl Fishi? Agggg…
(85) You mean like “wraithlike” and “Earthling”? There can’t be many others.
85, 85 – thl, thla, thlaspi, thlaspi arvense, thlipsis, thloc, thlpa, thls, thlw, thlz.
And those are just the ones that start with thl. (Online Dictionaries = ♥)
Oh, wait. I just checked, and most of those are acronyms. Darn.
They do sound like words you’d have trouble working into a conversation. “Thloc” could be Klingon, I suppose…
83- Again.
How would you like the name Latrina?
(92) If you check on the Web, you’ll find that many people bear that unfortunate monicker.
85- Piggy, may I axe you a question?
If you were an athlete, would you rather drink melk bimonthly, or become uncouthly growthless?
According to the online dictionary I just checked, there are 163 words containing “thl,” but not at the beginning or end.
92 – *retches* Latrina? It’s kind of like… um… Portia O’Poti.
(94) Continuing with “thl”: Let’s see, there’s “athlete” and its variants (athletic, athletics, pentathlon…). There are words ending in “-less” and “-ly” (deathless, deathly, breathless, ruthless, monthly, earthly…). There’s the name Kathleen, and the town of Bethlehem. I suppose there could be 163 in all, but I don’t think I could list anywhere near that many on my own.
Long post coming up.

96- Yup, that was pretty much the whole list, as far as I could tell. There were also some numbers with -ly stuck on the end, like eightly, tenthly, fifthly.
(97) “Dutchphobia”? True, the ancient Greeks didn’t have a word for “Dutch,” but surely the modern Greeks do. That failing, it would seem fairer to use the Dutch word for “Dutch,” whatever it is.
Ditto with “wiccaphobia.” The Greeks surely had a word for “witch.”
If you ever use the word “zoophobia,” make sure to pronounce it correctly: zoh-uh-phobia. (The English word “zoo” started out as an informal abbreviation of “Zoological Garden,” pronounced “zoh-uh-logical.” There is no “zoo” in “zoology.”)
99 – Yeah, some of them seem a little inaccurate. But whatever.
You know what book series has really bad names? Secrets of Droon. And the Dragonriders of Pern series has really good, almost believable names, my favorites being Jaxom and Menolly.
My favorite word is discombobulated. But, can you combobulate something?
Signing off. See you all tomorrow.
101 – I started to read the Secrets of Droon series, but I was never really a big fan of it. -RANDOM-
Everybody knows antidisestablishmentarianism. But does anybody know the word on this website: othyr.com/titin.html
I’m pretty sure that it’s mostly harmless, but the GAPAs are free to snip it if they find it inappropriate. The point is, it’s an English word that’s 189,819 letters long.
Whoa.
At othyr.com/titin.html, that'[s one long word.
77- Nope.
97-
Thank you so much! I shall use those words regularly.
Antidaephobia: fear of ducks
Triskadekaphobia: fear of the #13
Triskaidekaphobia. “Kai” is the Greek word for “and.” (It’s the Esperanto word, too, except that there it’s spelled “kaj.”) Tris-kai-deka = three-and-ten.
Excuse me-is orniphobia fear of birds? If so, is orniphagy eating birds?
You’re close: the words are ornithophobia and ornithophagy.
107-Aha. Thank you.
105- Thank you for that brief Greek lesson, Robert. I don’t know what I would do without you. *hugs*
I think that Serendipity is, undeniably, the coolest word/name in existence.
109- Ooh, that’s a wonderful name. Though I suppose everyone who’s actually named that hates it with a passion, and insists on being called Emily or something.
109 – It’s a cool word, but I certainly wouldn’t want it as my name. I think my name is too obscure, and it isn’t even that obscure.
I would love to be named Serendipity.
I’m named after an actress.
I am a actress.
Savvy?
I WANT TO BE NAMED CRYSTL!
In second:
Elle
Myst
Mostly Harmless (just kidding!)
Sarobando (not sure about this)
And Avalon is the name of my favorite store in all the world.
113- What’s your name?
My children are going to be named;
Girls:
Esme, Nymphadora, Rowena
Boys:
Jasper, Carlisle, Salazar
114 –
Don’t condemn the poor children!
I like Sophie, Rachel, and Julie for girls; I dunno about guys.
114- They’ll hate you for it.
My favorite names change constantly. Right now they are as follows (I wouldn’t necessarily want to name my children these things, however).
Girls:
Frances
Phoebe
Kathleen
Janey
Boys:
Owen
Corryn
Thomas
114~ Those are nice names dearie, but I doubt your children will see it the same way.
114-I like Nymphadora and Rowena. From now on, all my RPG characters will be named Crystl.
I drew a HPB on my hand. In pen.
And I created a punk bunny.
115/16/17- I know they’ll hate me for it and all, but…but…but… I just really want to name my kids something really bizarre!!! I mean, aren’t there enough Emily, Katie and Hannahs out there??? I mean, my name is Sianna! It was going to be Shoshannah, but my grandma said ‘no, absolutely not!!!’ And my friends have unusual names too! Persephone, Maelene, Genevieve, Talia, and Victoria! I think that interesting names define someone, separate them from the crowd of sheep, at least in one way. And if my daughter wants to be Ms Normal, she can have a cool nickname like Nymph, or Dora. I just really want my children to have cool names, and my favorite book series happen to have the best selection of such names.
119~ Yes, there are some very common names (Katie-I have at least 4 friends named that and a cousin…..that’s too much). But there are other names that are unusual that aren’t as strange as Nymphadora.
My name is Fern, which is different but (to most people) not too strange. Although I do have the odd person who won’t believe that that is my real name…….
Maybe try other names that are different enough, but aren’t quite that bizarre.
My real name is Mira. People keep calling me Myra, though.
Honestly, I WANNA BE NAMED SOMETHING MYSTICAL!
Like Crystl, or Avalon, or Rowena, or Luna, or Hecate, or Selene, or Cassidy, or…
Something cool.
I have a very awesome word this time. Tingo (witch I think is South African or somthing like that) means to steal all the stuff form your friend’s house by barrowing it one by one until there’s nothing left.
122- *bursts out laughing*
121- If you’re really that unhappy with your name, change it when you’re old enough. My friend is changing her name to Myoki Ishikao when she becomes a world famous Manga artist (because, you know, a pseudonym just wouldn’t do, she has to do the whole shebang…) Anyway, Mira IS a mystical name!!!!! It sounds like an Elvish princess name, or something…
120- Well, I just really want to name my kid Nymphadora.
119- JKR makes the best names. That’s not including Harry, obviously.
120- Fern is a pretty name.
Kaancho is a Nepali word which describes the mouth feel of under-ripe bananas. Useful, no? There should be an English word for it.
Nymphadora is better than Brfxxccxxmnpcccclllmmnprxvclmnckssqlbb11116, I suppose. Apparently, a couple in Sweden wanted to name their baby that, but the court didn’t allow them. Thankfully.
It’s pronounced “Albin,” apparently.
I think Sophie, Rachel and Julie are uncommon enough. I mean, really, Nymphadora? They’ll hate you for it, Misswann! I also like uncommon names, even though Samantha is very common. Names like Camden or… or… or… Well, I can’t think of any right now, but there are nice, uncommon guy names out there.
Doonkoff. (Or however you spell it). My new favorite word, it means “stupid head” in German…..(Thanks Gerry!)
There’s another one, but the GAPAs wouldn’t allow it. *is angelic*
125-Brfxxccxxmnpcccclllmmnprxvclmnckssqlbb11116??!!
WHO THE MUFFINS NAMES THEIR KID THAT?
*faints from shock*
*falls off cliff*
127) Dumkopf‚ actually.
Omphaloskepsis is my favorite word. It refers to the contemplation of one’s navel.
128- After the court wouldn’t let them, they tried unsuccessfully to name the poor kid “A.” (also pronounced “Albin”)
125- *clutches heart* See, finally someone understands! (Though, I do find Brfxxccxxmnpcccclllmmnprxvclmnckssqlbb11116 somehwhat appealing…
Jk, jk.)
Really, now? That may just be my favorite word, too.
126- I know they’ll hate me for it; but studies show that people with uncommon names are morelikely to becoe famous in their trade than others. And Nymphadora is so pretty!
127- Yes, the German have many words that are not commonly heard in civilized conversation.
129-
I think I will name my children:
K.
Alice.
Ozma.
Lirael.
132-Really, Bookworm. K? So what would their first initial be?
Lirael sounds very elfy. Ozma is just EEK-inducing. Alice is so-so.
*is mobbed by angry optimists*
AAGHHH!! I’m a name critic! It’s my job! Hey! LEGGO OF THE KE-
*dead silence*
Never criticize names. That is not Optimistic.
Lireal is actually a cool name. But Ozma?
I would name my children:
Lydia
Ben
Lireal
97–Coulrophobia–“Why so serious?”
113–Elle is a nice name. If pronounced like “Ell” and not “Ell-ee”
I want to name my kid Jack (if it’s a boy, obviously). For a girl, I might use Victoire or maybe Charlotte.
Other boy names I like: Jayden, Gethin (although I would never name my kid that), Chase, and Apollyon (even though again, I wouldn’t scar my kid for life with that one).
I think you guys would know what I would name a kid (John, obviously), or Helios, or Lucius.
A girl, I guess would be… maybe Mira or maybe ΕιÏηνη-Eirene, or Elissa.
So yeah. As you can see, I really like Mythology.
135- If you named your kid “Apollyon” people could just call him “Apollo”.
*general sounds of fighting*
Hello, people…I don’t know how long I’ll be here, as The Perfectly Happy And Serene Republic Democracy Of Total Optimists (or the PHASRDOTO) is mobbing me!
136-For once, I like the girl names. The boy names…CRAZY ALERT!
134-Lireal is, to speak, the only good one there.
135-Anything except Victoire or Apollyon!!!
Waitaminute. What’s that sound?
AAGGGGGGHHHHH!!!
*dead silence*
137- you intrigue me with your theatrics.
I love the names in Lord of the Rings. My Mom and I actually named a horse Arwin.
One of my favorite names for a girl is Lesley. I wish that was my name. My name is pretty boring.
It’s Hannah. There are like, 7 Hannahs in my grade!
(138) When I was 12, I named my brother’s hamster Arwen Undomiel. (I had already named our cat Saruman the White.)
139-I think that’s a great name for a cat, and that’s an…..interesting name for a hampster. I hope the hampster was a girl.
She was a beautiful hamster, the Evenstar of her species.
141-very poetic.
119 – You could give them normal middle names, so if they were unhappy with unique first names when they got older they could go by the middle name instead? I don’t want kids, but if I did, I would want to give them interesting names, too.
138, 139 – Tolkien’s names seem to be getting oddly popular for pets. My sister named her cats Arwen and Galadriel.
Blog name: It’s been awhile, but I’m pretty sure I chose it because I wanted to go by one word that would sum up my personality. I already liked “eccentric,” and since the definition given by m-w.com did fit me, I used it. I later added “the afterthought” because I felt, again, that the definition fit me.
Real name (Klara): I don’t think it’s common in America – people are constantly misspelling it with a “C” – but apparently it’s more popular in Europe. There’s even a part of Prague named Klarov or something like that, apparently after a saint Klara, at least I think she was a saint. The person who pointed this out to me didn’t speak much English and I, unfortunately, don’t know any Czech, so I didn’t catch the whole story. Anyway, Klara comes from the Latin for “clear” or “bright.”
110 – Yeah, I know. Someone at my school was named Serenity and went by Reni. Half the school didn’t even know her real name. They just knew her as Reni.
A girl at my school decided that she was going to name her first born son Caribou. Luckily, she was a 5th grader last year, so she has plenty of time to change her mind.
119 – I love unusual names, but I still wouldn’t want to be named Nymphadora. Like what MF said. (120)
122 – Awesome!
I’ve only taken a few things from my friend’s house. Mostly actually, it’s stuff that she’s left at my house by accident and I just keep forgetting to give it back. Or stuff that she gave to me.
125 – Some couple in some country wanted to name their child “Talula does the hula”. -shakes head sadly-
128 – I would!
Actually, I’d name my kid in binary instead. Wouldn’t 0100100001000101010011000100110001001111001000000101011101001111010100100100110001000100 be a cool name?
130 – Some guy sold the right to name his kid for a $100 gas card.
This thread is literally making me lol.
While reading The Scarlet Letter, I found a new favourite word: tempestuous, as in, “This wave of HPB-mania sweeping the ‘Blog right now is simply tempestuous.” It’s even more fun when modified: tempestuously, i.e. “I pie the group of neophytes tempestuously.”
132- Ozma is taken, I assume, from L. Frank Baum’s books?
Totalitarianism. That, my friends, is a great word.
137- Crazy alert? What about Hecate and Cassidy?
147-Hecate is the name of the triple goddess (a moon goddess. She was a crone, a maiden, and a mother at the same time.)
And Cassidy…well, anyone ever read W.I.T.C.H? Note the periods and capitals.
Both come from obsessing points.
Dolichocephalic. Also a wonderful word.
Just checking in to say: Rendezvous Such a lovely word.
Signing off.
148- And Helios is the sun god. Lucius is Latin for light.
Hmm… My favorite names:
The middle names are names after important people in my life.
Boys:
Theodore Nikolas (I have lots of friends named Nick)
Anderson Keith (My best friend is Keith)
Landon Michael (Lots of friends named Mike, and it’s Keith’s middle name)
Nelson Terry (My dad is Terry)
Girls:
Lacey Sarah (Sarah is a girl from taekwondo)
Kennadii Nola (Nola is my dad’s mother)
Ophelia JoAnn (JoAnn is my mom’s mother)
Valeriya Kelly (Kelly is my mom)
Ok now you all know the names of a bunch of people in my family. I hope nobody is comitted enough to stalking me to try to find my family. It would be pretty hard using only 1st names though.
152- I stalk people (celebrities, authors, people with the surname Cullen, etc) and it is very hard to use first names. And those are all common names, so you’re pretty safe from stalkers.
Syllabub: Robert is very encyclopedic. we just learned that word on Free Rice.
152–I like Nikolas, I haven’t seen that particular spelling before.
153-One of the olympic swimmers has the first name Cullen. I think he’s cute. He just looks so happy all the time! Haha!
156–Hmm…*goes to look him up* Wow. Nice bod. I pronounce him worthy of the Cullen name.
By the by, the name “Cullen” comes from the name of the German city of Cologne.
this one was a big hint, if I’d thought to look it up when he first came into the story)
Here are some more meanings of Twilight names (just because I have way to much time on my hands):
Emmett–all containing, universal strength
Alice–of the noble sort
Esme–esteemed, loved
Jasper–treasurer
Jacob–supplanter (
Charlie=Charles–free man
Edward–wealth protector
I love it when authors do their homework.
148 – Hecate would be a cool name.
158-I disagree. I would be extremely sad if my name were hecate.
159- I wouldn’t Hectate is a cool name.
157- I should name my children after the Cullens… or at least my cats…
157- Wow, those fit perfectly.
Homework-ing authors are the best. JKR much?
157- What about Carlisle?
160 – Please name the kids the normal names, like Edward or Alice, NOT… Renesmee or something stupid like that if it’s your children. If it’s your cats I really don’t care.
122 – Again, not in Webster’s third. I really need to get you a copy someday. (I haven’t forgotten zarf either.) Perhaps my extra one…
161–Yeah, JKR’s names are even better.
162–it just means “of Carlisle”, so I didn’t include it.
150- My dad’s boat is called the Rendezvous.
163-I like the name Alice! But not Edward… *Has Deep Alice’s Adventure In Wonderland Obsession*
167 – Yay for the name Alice!
(167) But not, apparently, a Winnie-the-Pooh obsession. (Edward Bear was Winnie-the-Pooh’s original name.)
169 – Really??? *falls in love with the name Edward*
169 – I wonder how it went from “Edward” to “Pooh.”
The process is described in the introduction to Winnie-the-Pooh, but its still a bit confusing:
– Well, when Edward Bear said that he would like an exciting name all to himself, Christopher Robin said at once, without stopping to think, that he was Winnie-the-Pooh. And he was.
– Here is Edward Bear, coming downstairs now, bump, bump, bump, on the back of his head behind Christopher Robin. It is, as far as he knows, the only way of coming downstairs, but sometimes he feels that there really is another way, if only he could stop bumping for a moment and think of it. And then he feels that perhaps there isn’t. Anyhow, here he is at the bottom, and ready to be introduced to you. Winnie-the-Pooh.
When I first heard his name, I said, just as you are going to say, “But I thought he was a boy?”
“So I did,” said Christopher Robin.
“Then you can’t call him Winnie?”
“I don’t.”
“But you said–”
“He’s Winnie-ther-Pooh. Don’t you know what ‘ther’ means?”
“Ah, yes, now I do,” I said quickly; and I hope you do too, because it is all the explanation you are going to get.
I’ve heard that Winnie was the name of a famous bear that Christopher Robin had seen in the London Zoo. The name came from Winnipeg, because the bear had been caught as a cub in Canada. No doubt Wikipedia tells all about it.
171 – Same.
172 – That passage sounds vaguely familiar…It’s been a long time since I read the Pooh books. *looks at the beginning of Pooh books* Found it!
Another thing you’ll find out if you read them is that Pooh had a gruff, growly voice. Having had the books read to me before Disney got hold of them, I never reconciled myself to the kindly Pillsbury-Doughboy voice in the cartoons. As far as I was concerned, it was just wrong.
175 – Wait, a gruff voice??? *is traumatized*
You guys are talking about Winnie-ther-Pooh?
I used to love him, he’s so cuddly and cute. Pooh had a gruff growly voice? Really? I can’t really imagine that coming from a cute bear.
175 – *has part of her childhood ruined* When I read the Pooh books, I always imagined Pooh’s voice to be kind of like a kid who was part-bear. So the cartoons weren’t too much of a jump for me. But you’re making him sound all grumpy.
No, he wasn’t grumpy, but he was a bear.
Pooh in the books wasn’t exactly cute and cuddly, either. (In fact, the only truly cute character was Piglet.) You ought to read or reread them some time — the original ones, with the Shepard illustrations. They’re very good, but they might surprise you.
179- I feel we need a “England” thread.
I was obsessed with the Pooh books. My bedspread was the 100-Acre Wood. I had one of those styrofoam cutters with a hot wire, and created little styrofoam cutouts of all the characters (amazing they sold those things to young children, when I think back now). Our family played Pooh sticks whenever we came to a bridge, including the famous time my dad leaned over too far and his glasses fell into the stream.
Eeyore won my heart — the drawings of his joy at getting his tail back are some of my favorites of all time — and my old, well worn stuffed Eeyore sits on my bedside table to this day.
Hm, there’s a thought. How about Great Britain in general?
181- Pooh sticks!
182- Yes!
181- Eeyore’s adorable, so is piglet. We had this little stuffed Eeyore before we moved to Illinois that was so incredibly cute. We also had a piglet along with it. But, it got lost in the sea of boxes while we were moving.
161 – JKR almost does her homework TOO much when naming her charactrers. People often guessed at roles that her characters were going to player later on based on their names alone.
As for Winnie-The-Poo characters, I always liked Kanga and Roo. And the owl, whose name I have forgotten.
(185) He was just “Owl,” but he spelled it “WOL.”
186 – Yeah, you’re right.
I’ve actually never seen a Winnie-the-Pooh movie, so I have no idea what his Disney-ified voice sounds like. I’d always imagined it to sound like my dad’s voice, as he’s the one who usually read all of the books to me when I was little.
Piglet was always my favorite. The story of piglet and the balloon always broke my heart.
I love Piglet. I used to think pigs said “Oh d-dear dear”.
Piglet is my favorite.
Piglet was always ALMOST my favorite.
But Roo always was. Because I’m weird like that.
179 – I own all four books (the two storybooks and the two poetry books) and yet I still couldn’t imagine Pooh like that. Okay?
I saw a very disturbing article tacked up on the wall of my therapist’s office. It said that basically all of the Winnie-the-Pooh characters have serious mental problems. I cried. Why do these people feel the need to psychoanalyze book characters and ruin all of our childhoods?
*notices that thread has been derailed*
(179, followup) I forgot about Roo, who was probably cuter than Piglet.
192 – That dude has problems.
I love Roo, too, but not nearly as much as Piglet.
Can we have a Winnie-the-Pooh thread, please?
Done. Now let’s get back to Words and Names, please.
195 – Niiice!
Anyone know what the prefix “zygo” means?
195 – Thanks a million!
196 – Zygo: A pair, I’m guessing. From genetics, see: Homozygous, heterozygous.
(197) Yes — it’s from zygon, the Greek word for “yoke.” Think of two oxen pulling a plow or cart side by side.
My dictionary says it’s related to the Latin jungere, “to join,” from which we get junction, conjunction, etc. There’s also a neat rhetorical device called a zeugma, which you may want to look up.
198 – What dictionary? I want that dictionary!
Most dictionaries give etymological information, don’t they? The one in my office is Merriam Webster’s Collegiate Dictionary, tenth edition.
200 – Thanks! *looks up* Wow. Thirty bucks.
198 – Zeugma! That’s one of my favorite words. (The list may be several thousand words long mind you.)
Hello, speller! How long is your list of favorite dictionaries?
203 – I’m still rather fond of Webster’s 3rd (official spelling bee dictionary). The other dictionaries I have are an old edition of Webster’s collegiate and an old edition of American Heritage (excluding French-English dictionaries). I might buy a new edition of American Heritage for the National Vocabulary Championship.
i got a new dictionary today!!!!!!!!!!!!!! (new to me anyway)
Oh boy, dictionaries. I think I have five that I personally own plus like three that I share with my family, including a Webster’s Collegiate (7th ed.).
I know I’m probably not the only one, but does anyone else read the dictionary? I used to study for the spelling bee that way. It’s actually not as mind-numbing as it sounds, you learn a bunch of new words on every page.
206 – Yes. The addendum of Webster’s 3rd is fun to read. That wasn’t how I studied for spelling though. By the way, did you ever make the National Spelling Bee?
207–No, sadly. I only got to County.
My favorite words-
quipped
snogging
truffles
umbrella
wildebeast
splotch
shrub
SPAM (what excactly is it made of, anyway?)
kablooie
oriole
That’s all I can think of.
181- I call my friend Elissa Eeyore; she is exactly like him.
200- I feel like you have released your secret weapon in your intelligence arsenal.
209- Snogging and oriole have to be the coolest words EVAH.
Methylchloroisothiazolinone. That’s all I can say. It’s a preservative in shampoo.
Aibohphobia-fear of palindromes
Some more favorite words:
weasel
synecdoche
gallimaufry
lilliputian
sobriquet
kerf
oikology
gribble
212- Those are words? Science is a funny thing.
I’ve always thought that entymology is way cool. I did some research on Greek roots in 5th grade when we were studying ancient Greek history, and I’ve retained a lot of that knowledge. It’s really cool to dissect how a word is put together, and how it might have originated.
It even featured in an encounter with soccer for me. Our referee for that game said that whichever team’s captains (I was one for our team) could translate the Olympic motto, “Citius, Altius, Fortius”, into English could choose which side of the field they wanted to start on. I figured out Altius pretty quickly (Higher), and then we got Fortius (Stronger) while thinking about words like Fortitude, but we couldn’t figure out the last one because it wasn’t a root we recognized.
We started trying to figure out what word would go alongside “Higher” and “Stronger” in a phrase, and both teams came up with “Faster” at the same time. So, neither team got the advantage, because we answered at the same time. But, we walked away from that game with a further understanding of the importance of knowing your roots.
Or not.
209- What isn’t SPAM made of? Choice meat, for one thing. Or even recognizable cuts of meat. But it’s still so delicious!
214- I think it’s “Altius, citius, fortius.” And good job figuring those out.
“Scruples” and its related words have to be some of my favorites to say. “‘Tis a shame our beloved Kokopelli is so unscrupulous.” Scruple scruple scruple.
212 – I love those words.
214 – I think you mean etymology. Entymology sounds like a cross between etymology and entomology. That would be something along the lines of the study of the origins of bug language.
216- Well, I used to read *coughcoughLOOKATTHECOMICScoughcough* in a Garfield dictionary.
More favorite words! w00t!
palindrome
smock
flung
fungi
And there we have everything I can think of.
I mean 206.
217–ooh, ‘smock’ is a good one. Smock smock smock
219- Have you ever read the Calvin and Hobbes with the ‘smocks’?
‘Smock smock smock smock smock. Don’t knock my smock or I’ll clean your clock.Smock.’
‘WHAT IS WRONG WITH YOU?!?’
More funny words!
Pajamas
Bubbles
Euphoria
220-
I like my smock.
Uh-huh… Here’s your clay.
You an always tell the quality of the artist by the quality of his smock.
Great… this stuff is impossible to work with, so you’ve got to mush it around a little bit.
Actually, I just like to SAY smock.
Mmhmm…
Smock smock smock smock smock smock!
WHAT IS WRONG WITH YOU?!?!
(Hobbes)
(Calvin)
(Hobbes)
(Calvin)
(Hobbes)
(Calvin)
(Hobbes)
(Calvin)
Great Words:
Titan!
Titan!
Titan!
222 – Oh my gosh!!!!!!!!!! I LOVE Calvin and Hobbes!

222~ I LOVE LOVE LOVE Calvin and Hobbes. They’re the best. With the exception of some of Larry Gonick’s work, of course.
222- CALVIN AND HOBBES! They’re flamablamablous! I LOVE THEM!!!!
And Chewbacca. We call my dog Chewie because she sounds exactly like Chewbacca when she whines
.
Smock is a fun word to say. So is “Spock” from Star Trek.
great word- vegetarist
meaning: vegetarian
made up? totally
why? My friends and i were sitting at dinner (which is our heavy meal, at one o’clock) and we were discussing our political views. I anounced I was a part of the five ‘ists’ : Aethist, anarchist, pacifist, feminist, and vegetarist.
Vegetarian had to fit the other words, so….
I like the word quark.
228 – Quark is a cool word.
I like the word flamablamablous. Then again, who in their right minds wouldn’t?
230- Well, my sister for one.
I like “snork”. Although I think it’s a sound effect rather than a real word–it’s the sound you make when someone makes a suprising/unbelievable comment and you breathe in rapidly through your nose.
232 – Your comment reminded me of:
“And the baby bird asked the Snort ‘Are you my mother?'”
233–Aw, I love that book! Such a classic!
I was wondering if anyone else has any stories of working obscure words into every day conversation. My example, and emmatheduck will probably kill me for this, is once when I actually found a practical use for gardez.
I was at math camp sitting around in the lobby of the dorms, reading or playing Set or chatting or something, and across from me two people were playing a chess game (extremely common at math camp). One had moved a piece into a position where it could capture the queen next turn and said “queen check.” My response was, “I believe the correct term is gardez.”
Someone else knows what omphaloskepsis is! *cheers* How about borbarygmus, anyone?
Shadowfire loves words! (when I’m feeling crazy, I talk in third person.)
233 – “You are not my mother. You are a Snort.”
Borbarygmus? Nope, sorry.
I wonder if 1st period is over yet.
I like the word “humuhumunukunukuapuua’a”. It is incredibly fun to say.
236 – I love omphaloskepsis! Borbarygmus… That’s a type of poisoning caused by a fungus, I think. It’s hard to spell is what I really remember.
234 – I love that book, too!
237 – I used to call bulldozers “Snorts” when I was little.
237 – Humuhumunukunukuapuaa is fun. I think they considered using it in a National Spelling Bee once but decided it was too long.
238-Nope. it’s the (rumbling) sound of gas going through the intestines of mammals. (Love my random English teacher.)
Coruscating, anybody? I read a lot.
235–nice job fitting that in. And with such elegant phrasing, too.
241–I like ‘coruscating’. Reminds me of Coruscant, though.
241 – Oops, I just realized the word I was confusing it with was mycetismus.
200 – My electronic Merriam Webster doesn’t, proving that old-fashioned dictionaries are still the best.
206 – Yes! My friend used to get laughed at for doing that, but it’s fun.
222 – Calvin & Hobbes is one of the best strips ever!
If you happen to be reading “Oedipus Rex,” get the Paul Roche translation. It has lots of nifty words and phrases, like “purblind sot”!
244-but other electronic dictionaries do, proving that it’s not the form the dictionary is in, but the quality of the dictionary version itself.
My blog name is not my own (thank heaven!) My name is Zack. That should be a surprise, you were probably suspecting a name like Matthew of Josh of Nick.
132- Good choices. Seriously. Except maybe K. (And I’m not just saying that because my name is in there! Honestly!)
133- -mobs-
134- What are you talking about? Ozma’s a wonderful name! Although I suppose it could be classed with Nymphadora in “Ridiculous Literature Nerd Names.” But it’s much less extravagant than Nymphadora.
Looks like we may have a generation of Liraels in a decade or two. What would Garth Nix say?
138- I like Lesley better when spelled Leslie.
139- Go LOTR nerds!
144- CARIBOU???? -dies-
And what, exactly, is the name that you wrote in binary?
RE: Hecate: I don’t like it much; H names have never appealed to me (except Horatio… don’t laugh!).
168- Yay!
181- I had a sleeping bag with the 100-Acre wood on it!
Oh, so for Latin homework, we are supposed to find what our names (along with various others) mean in Latin. So I found this cool site, and it tells you what names mean. Of course, after searching most book characters, I searched the GAPAs!
Robert: Bright Fame
Roseanne: Fair Rose
Rebecca: To Tie
Paul: Small
(and for the MBers whose names I know)
Beavo (Michael): Who Is Like God?
Syllabub (Hannah): Grace of God
Midnight Fiddler (Fern): A Fern Plant
Alice (Alice): Truth
Eccentric the Afterthought (Klara): Clear
Avalongirl (Mira): The name is originally derived from Miranda, which means Admirable.
Arrrrgfish (Aggie): Good
My name is Sianna. That is Celtic for Jane, which means Gracious.
248- Wait, Alice means truth? Where are you getting this information? Everywhere else I’ve looked it meant something else. Noble, or something.
Personally I like truth better, but I don’t think that’s what it is…
248 – What about Samantha?
248- Robin and Summer?
MissSwann (248): Thanks for the translation. I like my name! If I had to pick another one, I’d miss it.
Ben/ Benjamin/ Benyamin: Son of the right hand.
250-
Samantha- “Told by God.”
251-
Robin- “Bright fame.”
Summer- A season
253-Hmm.
I never thought about it before, but that’s kind of weird. Is there a ‘son of the left hand’? Probably not. Bensmol doesn’t have quite the same ring to it. My real name means moon, as you know probably already know if you’ve been on the neophyte thread.
My name is pretty self-explanatory. Rose means, gasp, a rose (as in the flower).
252- No problem! And your name is very pretty.
Samantha: Listener
Robin: From the Bird
Summer: From the Season
Any more name translations?
I’m Rachel, which I know is Lamb in Hebrew.
Latin, though…
254 – Thank you!
257 – Thanks as well!
I’m not allowed to put my real name on the internet, even though I trust you all, but my name means ‘Full of Grace’. Which, when you think about it, really doesn’t describe me at all. But I still like that I actually mean something.
260-What MuseBlogger IS ‘Full of Grace’? Ok, my characters are…but they took lessons.
248-In Russian it means Peace, and in Spanish it means Look…
And this is totally random, but my birthday present from my parents is a subscription to Muse!
I made up a name! I think it’s pretty nice, considering, well, never mind. It’s “Lurialyss” which would mean “Lyric Noble” but I just say it means “Noble Lyrics” which is kinda confusing, but I still think it sounds nice. Eratohua would would mean “lovely flower”. Well, I just can’t stay away from stuff that have to do with music, Erato is also the Muse of lyric poetry. Not technically song lyrics. So yeah.
confuzzling, eh?
245 – True, mine is a small edition. One of my friends has the electronic OED; it’s amazing how much information fits on that little screen.
248 – Cool!
“Eldritch” is my current favorite word. I like it so much that one of these days I might even switch to “the Eldritch” instead of “the Afterthought” in my blog name.
Have you noticed how silly this year’s campaign stickers are going to sound? “McCain/Palin” doesn’t roll off the tongue at all. Maybe it’s the linguistic difficulties of the “aynp” sound in the middle, or maybe it’s the fact that they both end in “N,” but it’s about as fun to say as a medicine ingredient. And “Obama/Biden”, by contrast, rolls off the tongue too much. Obamabiden, Obamabiden… it sounds like a turkey trying to rap.
247- I like ozma, too! The name was borrowed for an early SETI project, which makes sense, as it’s very alien-sounding.
263–Ooh, eldritch is a good word. I like how the dr and the tch parts sound, I think.
264–Palin/McCain sounds ok…but I agree, you can’t do anything with Obama/Biden. Too many syllables.
K, ya’ll know how during Reagan, his type of economic reform was Reaganomics? Think about what it would be if Obama is pres.: Obamanomics!
264- EVERYTHING about Mcain/Palin is wrong.
266-

Skepticism! Cool word, that is.
Okay, I can’t find anywhere better to ask this….. Does anyone know of a website that can tell you the meaning of unusual names? I mean, I have not found my own name in any website/baby name book I’ve ever seen, much less the name I’m trying to find. And, yes, I did try Behindthename. No luck.
Try: http :// babynamesworld. parentsconnect. com/ (delinkified, and it’s a government site, so it’s safe – no pop-ups)
We’ll allow the URL, but it’s not a government site. It’s commercial, run by Nickelodeon.
Armada — it’s also possible that your name doesn’t have a meaning.
269 – It’s not government (as Robert already said), and the definitions are sometimes inaccurate, I’ve found.
270-Oh, my name has a meaning. I actually already know what it means. I’m looking for another name. And I think that possibly nothing short of a site labelled “The Complete Baby Name Website With Absolutely Nothing Left Out” is going to have it. Of course, the name I’m looking for might not have a meaning.(Duh! Is that what you meant, Robert?)
Yes, by “your name” I meant “the name you are looking for.”
270 – But it’s .gov, right?
273-
Riiiiigghhhht. Yeah, that might be it. But I don’t know. It just sounds so AFRICAN!!!!! Oh well…. I’m kind of suspicious of names ‘without meanings’, because I have firsthand experience with not being able to find a name anywhere, even though it has a meaning.
And, by the way, I am NOT going to tell you what the name I’m looking for is. Don’t ask. Please.
Micheelle–who is like god (or god-like)–same as Michael…..
Hehehe, I can’t type–that’s supposed to be Michelle not Micheele
(274) No, dot-com, just as you posted it.
278 –
I can’t read.
Hmm, how I found my blog name I’d rather not tell you.
My real name, Lina (does happy skippy dance because MuseBlog didn’t tell me I spelled my name wrong!!) means something along the lines of “little one” in Italian, which is kind of a misnomer, because everyone says I’m tall for a 10 year old, but I never really noticed the tall thing, I feel normal sized.
I can’t put my real name on the Internet, but this is how I picked my Museblog name.
Once, me and my friends made up a Warriors game, and my name in it was Rainbowheart. I wanted to be Clan leader, but I wasn’t. If I had been, my name would have been Rainbowstar.
Remember when I was still Cliff Eagle Teh Pwnage? I did that because i was a phyte and nobody was paying attention to me. I wanted to get noticed.
I’ve sort of randomly been thinking about changing my name. Not to Vocalization of Feline, either, but something completely different. I dunno why.
269 – I use that site all the time. Isn’t it funny how people on MuseBlog visit the same websites so often?
283-No, don’t! Please! I like Cat’s Meow!
284 – Teehee! Seriously, I do too, but I feel like changing it. Again, I dunno why. Just for something new, I guess.
267- I agree.
I’m sure Obama’s campaign will come up with something brilliant to describe Obama/Biden. They’ve done rather well at coming up with creative slogans in the past.
268–Some names don’t have specific meanings, but come from mythology or historical figures, and so have interesting stories or connotations attached to them.
I’m thinking of changing my blogname as well. But only if I think of something really awesome.
283 – I think of changing my name a lot, and sometimes I do, but I always come back to this. I guess it’s because I’ve had this for so long. What I don’t like about mine is that it’s sort of a tribute to someone else, and that was ages ago. I like the rhythm of the name and everything, but I feel like it doesn’t really fit anymore.
But there’s no way I’ll be permanently changing it any time at all soon.
I love your name, but if you want to change it I’d love to see what you come up with.
How about… Obiden vs. McPalin! Did someone say that already?
288-That’s true. Sigh…… I’ll probably never know.
289–Love it. I think I’ll make a bumper sticker that says “Obiden vs. McPalin: Indecision ’08”
Sorry for the double post–I just found this poem, thought it was appropriate for this thread.
Three things quickly – pineapple, sparrowgrass, whale –
and then on to asbestos. What I want to say tonight is
words, the naming of things into their thing,
yucca, brown sugar, solo, the roll of a snare drum,
say something, say anything, you’ll see what I mean.
Say windmill, you feel the word fly out from under and away.
Say eye, say shearwater, alewife, apache, harpoon,
do you see what I’m saying, say celery, say Seattle,
say a whole city, say San Jose. You can feel the word
rising like a taste on the palate, say
tuning fork, angel, temperature, meadow, silver nitrate,
try carbon cycle, point lace, helium, Micronesia, quail.
Any word – say it – belladonna, screw auger, spitball,
any word goes like a gull up and on its way,
even lead lifts like a swallow from the nest
of your tongue. Say incandescence, bonnet, universal joint,
lint – oh I invite you to try it. Say cold cream,
corydalis, corset, cotillion, cosmic dust,
you are all of you a generous and patient audience,
pilaster, cashmere, mattress, Washington pie,
say vise, inclinometer, enjambment, you feel your own voice
taking off like a swift, when you say a word you feel like
a gong that’s been struck, to speak is to step out of your skin,
stunned. And you’re a pulsar, finally you understand light
is both particle and wave, you can see it, as in
parlour – when do you get a chance to say parlour –
and now mackinaw, toad and ham wing their way
to the heaven of their thing. Say bellows, say sledge,
say threshold, cottonmouth, Russia leather,
say ash, picot, fallow deer, saxophone, say kitchen sink.
This is a birthday party for the mouth – it’s better than ice cream,
say waterlily, refridgerator, hartebeest, Prussian blue
and the word will take you, if you let it,
the word will take you along across the air of your head
so that you’re there as it settles into the thing it was made for,
adding to it a shimmer and the bird song of its sound,
sound that comes from you, the hand letting go
its dove, yours the mouth speaking the thing into existence,
this is what I’m talking about, this is called saying things.
That’s a lovely poem! I looked it up: it’s called “Saying Things,” by Marilyn Krysl. She has her own Web site at www . marilynkrysl . com .
293- I have a sore throat, I couldn’t say those things. Sorry!
114: (MissSwann). I plan to name any children as follows:
Girls:
Ginevra Alexandria (the middle name will change if JKR ever says what Ginny’s middle name is)
Lily Luna
Rose Isabelle
Alanna Marie
I’m sure I had others, but I don’t have my list…..
boys:
Teddy Remus
James Sirius
Lucas Aurelius
um–know I had more…..
And no, of course none of them are named after HP characters. whyever would you think that?
295- Ginny’s middle name is Molly. ^^
I told my mom that her future granddaughter was going to be named Nymphadora, and she said that she refused to be related to anyone with a name sounding like ‘Nymphamania’.
When will she learn?
296–wait, where did she say???? it makes sense, and all, I just don’t remember anything saying…..Guess that means my first girl will be Ginevra Molly, then–not quite the same ring, but that’s ok.
Nymphadora, huh? And your mom wouldn’t accept that…..*shakesheadindisbelief* she could’ve gone by Dora….
293–My English teacher assigned it to my class
297- It doesn’t say it; to tell the truth, I did some digging on Google to find it. But all of my sources say the same, so I figure it must be accurate.
I suggested calling her Dora as a nickname, but she added ‘The Explorer’ after it. *sigh* Still not stopping me.
299 (MIss Swann): I found a spot online where it has JKR saying in an interview that it’s Molly (I had to prove to myself that you were right). If you google “Ginevera Weasley middle name” it’s the second hit. Then, a little way down the page it has a thing that says “Other pages on Ginny”, the second of which is an outside link to “JKR on Ginny (accio quote)”. In case you wanted to have proof from a presumably accurate source…..thank you!!!!
And I never even thought of “dora the explorer”…..guess i’m not up on little kid shows.
295 – Thank God you’re making the strange names in the middle. Except for Ginevra. But whatever.
296 – Seriously, even Tonks didn’t like Nymphadora. She’ll be called her last name or Dora or something. You’ll condemn her. I’m dead serious. Don’t name your kid Eragon or Hermione or Frodo unless you want to ruin their social status forever.
299- Hmm…
Nympha? No, let’s not go there.Maybe your or your future husband’s last name, like “Tonks?” Provided it’s more normal than Nymphadora.
Tell your mom she can call her “Emy” if she wants.
… I met a girl name Judith at camp once, and nobody knew her name wasn’t actually “Emy” until it was accidentally-publicly announced. ‘Twas rather awkward.
301: Ginevra’s not that bad–she could go by Ginny, after all. There are kids out there with much worse names (although i can’t htink of any right off).
303 – True, but I would hate naming my kid after a fictional character. I think it would seem unoriginal.
I was watching this episode of Friends, and Phoebe wanted to prove to Mike she had a serious relationship (which she didn’t), so Ross cooked up a fake former fiancee (alliteration! Yay!) named Vikrum (obviously made up, right?).
The next day, there was roll call and the teacher said “VIKRUM!”
It was all I could do not to snigger uncontrollably. Ordinarily, I wouldn’t do that, but seeing that episode…
304- I agree with you about not naming your children after fictional characters, even if you love the name. However, I have no qualms about naming other fictional characters after fictional characters (provided it’s actually a real name and everything, not like, Arwen or something (although there was a sheep named Arwen, I think)), which is good because I really don’t intend to have any children to name and therefore have to be content with fictional characters.
Re- HP kid names: One of my kids might be accursed with the middle name Tonks. Jessandra Tonks [insert surname here]. Hmm, I’m rather partial to that. She’ll be the eldest girl. Another one might be named James George [insert surname here]. If I have another boy, I’ll name him Severus (Sev for short) Fred [insert surname here]. Luna Ginny [insert surname here]. Zinc Leafygreen [insert surname here]. Lily Rowena [insert surname here]. Remus Sirius [insert surname here]. I don’t think I’ll have that many kids, but I’m definetly using Jessandra Tonks, Severus Fred, and Lily Rowena. But if by that time my husband is fed up with HP names, it’ll be Elphaba Galinda.
306- Elphaba Galinda, =) me likes… Bit of a mouthful, though.
GAH. You HP fans!
I made up a bunch of names but I don’t want to admit to my utter fandom so I won’t post them.
I do rather like the name Tonks. But not Nymphandora. Too many syllables.
308. Thou art being a bit of a disgrace to HP fans.
309. I like Nymphadora!
I like HP names. Maybe I’ll name my kid Luna or something. LUNA LOVEGOOD ROCKS!! I’m expecting my friend Violet to start calling me Luna instead of Lina any day now, because she told me the other day I had this overall resemblance to Luna Lovegood.
(Does happy skippy dance because MB didn’t tell me I spelled my name wrong!!)
248. You have Latin too? Hurrah!!! Finally, someone! In Latin class we all have Latin names, and mine is Leona _ _ _ _ia (I can’t say the first part because it has my last name in it) Marcella, and it’s cool how our Latin names work just like the names people had when Latin was spoken.
The Latin teacher keeps calling me Lina (normal name) instead of Leona.
303- Latrina. Duvette. ‘Nuff said.
311- I have Latin! And I’m so happy that SOMEONE likes Nymphadora!!!
I just found the best website. ‘K, so you know how Sarah Palin’s kids have odd names (like Track, Trig, Willow, Bristol and Piper)? Well, on this website, you type in your name, and it gives you your “Sarah Palin name.” Just Google “Sarah Palin name” and it’s the first website to pop up.
My Sarah Palin name is:
‘Steam Fangs Palin’.
Regardless of the side you support, you’ve got to admit that’s awesome.
I like the word “cycadian”, as in biorhythms. A lot of star names are fun to say:
Algol
Deneb
Altair (All-tye-ear/are)
Vega
Aldebaran
314 – Do you mean circadian?
297- On JKR’s website, I think it’s in the Room of Requirement. There’s a whole family tree, and I think there’s middle names, too. I could be wrong, though.
People always mispronounce my name. That’s why I put a little pronounciation guide up there.
It’s funny, because I always thought that Lyra from His Dark Materials was pronounced LEER-rah, like my name. But I saw a commercial for the movie (I never actually saw the movie- I heard it was horrible) and they pronounced it LYE-rah. I had never realized before then that most people probably pronounce it that way.
Oops, nevermind. It doesn’t have middle names for any of the characters in the books, but it does for their children. But I do think that Ginny’s middle name is Molly; JKR might have mentioned it in her books somewhere.
316–yup, I’ve seen the family tree. As far as Ginny’s middle name, she didn’t mention it in the books, but after doing a little research (see post 300) I managed to find verification of what MissSwann said about her middle name being Molly. Yay Harry Potter!!!!
Can anyone think of a good name for a heroine? Or at least of a good meaning the name could have?
315- Oophs, you’re right!
319- How about Zerzura? That’s a lost Arabian city and a name I’ve always loved.
Horripilation:
the act or process of hair bristling on the skin; goosebumps.
‘Nuff said.
Wow, dead thread.
Well, partly dead. How should I know?
No, I’ll name my boy- KERMIT FOZZIE! (Jk, jk
)
What about the name Rowlf? But I’m seriously going to name one of my children after a Muppet character, like Flloyd, or Lew Zealand.
wow…this is a dead thread. Kinda sad.
i like the names Ayla(my neighbor), Petra(it’s a city buried under the sand in jordan), and Hortensia.(no idea, it just sounds sweet.)
I have a list of cool names!
*Writes best ones down* Here it is!
Iphygenia-Zanobia
Perpetua
Castleivionavia
I had a lot more, but tastes change. Castleivionavia is a hot tempered seamstress in my current favorite (imaginary) world.
My absolute favorite name is the name of a band: Moxy Fruvous. I also like the name Allan Parsons
(325) Looks like it’s time for a new thread.
