arbitrary list of artists I enjoy

Radiohead, sufjan stevens, hot chip, miyavi, 12012, wilco, of montreal, keane, the flaming lips, fiona apple, conor oberst/bright eyes

I also enjoy classical music. All types really. Me and my mom listen to the classical music station in the car if we’re going somewhere and it’s really nice.

Matchbox Romance is one of those obscure little bands that I am fond of. Other than that, my main music supplement is My Chemical Romance, Panic (! optional, I like both CDs) at the Disco, Paramore, and the Beatles. I could honestly survive listening to only those bands for the rest of my life.

I like the firebird suite. I’ve never properly seen it, and I haven’t heard it at all in years, but I remember liking it.

I honestly listen to a lot of (Broadway) musicals. The Secret Garden, Seussical, and Dirty Rotten Scoundrels are some of my favorites to listen to.

    A little oldies…

and if this looks familiar its cuz its copy/pasted off the chatterbox

Miley Cyrus (not really Hannah Montana stuff though)
    Secondhand Serenade
    KT Tunstall
    Rihanna
sometimes the Jonas Brothers but only “Burnin’ Up” (awesome song)
    Kelly Clarkson
I also really like “Summertime” by New Kids On The Block and “Everytime we Touch” by CASCADA. Those of you who like anime (I don’t, sorry) probably know that last one. I’ve seen videos on YouTube that have that song with anime (Naruto and… something else that I forget).

4-MCR and paramore are on my list of bands i hate…the beatles are rockin’ though

    7-arrogant worms are hilarious

8-haven’t heard much john meyer/not really that interested in what i’ve heard. switchfoot’s good.

I’m partial to my Harry Potter soundtracks–namely #4. 1-3 are ok, but John Williams’ music tend to get repetetive–I was listening to a piano recital one time, and this kid was playing this song from some movie I’d never seen, had no clue who did the soundtrack–and I thought, hey that sounds like JW’s stuff, and sure enough, I looked it up and it was by john williams. the song had great similarities to themes in HP.

HP 4 soundtrack is totally awesome–Patrick Doyle is brilliant

    HP5 is ok–honestly, I don’t htink I’ve even listened to the entire thing yet…..

Anyways, that’s really all I listen to, and I don’t evenlisten to themall that often….

They Might Be Giants (of course). I actually met people (my age!) in real life (!) who had heard of Them, while I was at my camp-ish-thing. It was exciting.

Kila, Altan, Solas, and other Irish-ish bands are fun, and Kila is bordering on amazing, in my opinion. I love their album titles… Gambler’s Ballet, Luna Park, Handel’s Fantasy, etc. Except for the fact that the itunes album of Gambler’s Ballet is messed up and not labeled correctly. *cough*

I listen to random classical music a lot, especially Saint-Saens and ballet music… I can’t decide if I adore or detest the Nutcracker.

I found a song by Oppenheimer (questionable spelling?) that I thought was very nice… Look Up, it’s called. The music video is cute, and makes me smile.

Yeti goes “TMBG? i love them!” and starts singing along. we both knew the words to pretty much everything…and so all of our friends became instant TMBG fans, unable to withstand the sheer force of awesome.

the doctor horrible soundtrack is out. i don’t have a gift card though, so i’m not getting it (that’s the only time i deign to use the itunes store, is when people give me free things)

25~ You are welcome here! i often get lambasted for my musical choices, like the time I got called a “music-hater”, and I live for music. We all have different tastes, and music is personal, what I hate my friend loves, and on some we meet in the middle.

That said, I love Irish, Scottish and English traditional music, the stuff that goes under the general title of “Celtic.” I play fiddle (thus the name) and concertina, which makes most people give me a blank stare and say “Uuh, what’s that?”
I adore historical music, I love finding old songs and playing them, it’s like a musical treasure hunt.

I also have a passion for maritime music, sea chanties and work songs. I love to sing them and think about the jobs they were sung to, the people who sang them and the way they were done. Another treasure hunt, and it’s good to review the parts of a working ship or sailing maneuvers…. ( yes, I’m a geek.)

I also like listening to all sorts of random stuff that friends tell me about, I find by accident or that I hear just about anywhere. For example, having access to a tv last week made me look up Drake Bell’s music. (yes, be surprised.) It’s interesting, some of it is fun, I enjoy it as something different.
A friend sent me a song by the Rolling Stones, and I love it, I’ve been listening to all sorts of things lately, and thoroughly enjoying them.

Yes, I’m weird in all things. those who know me are used to it, those who don’t know me yet, take this as fair warning…… I’m safe though, really. Heh, who wouldn’t trust that face? If not that one, maybe, this?

He rambled on about how it’s “Your 1st opprotunity to play piano in middle school” and how it would be so wonderful and all that. I tried to tell him that I thought that I had too much else going on, but he wouldn’t take the hint. So he told me to come see him again before I got on the bus after school. Again, I told him that I didn’t have the time to commit to practicing. He looked at me like I was insane and was like “You’d miss a great opprotunity” and blah blah blah. The best way to get a song out of your head is to sing the Happy Dance Song. I can post the lyrics here. It works on the level that it clears the song out of your head, but it puts itself in. The lyrics were written by a counselor at my camp named Eli Cohn Wein and can be sung to any tune. Here goes.

    This is the happy dance,
The happy dance, The happy dance,
This is the happy dance, The happy happy dance.

    (Spanish version)
    Esta es el Happy Dance,
El Happy Dance, El Happy Dance,
    Esta es el Happy Dance,
    El Happy, Happy Dance.

    (Hebrew version)
    Zeh Ha Rikud Sameach
    Rikud Sameach Rikud Sameach
    Zeh Ha Rikud Sameach
    Rikud Rikud Sameach

    (German Version)
    Das Ist Der Happy Dans
Der Happy Dans, Der Happy Dans
    Das Ist Der Happy Dans,
    Der Happy Happy Dans

    (French version)
    C’est la danse heureuse,
La danse heureuse, la danse heureuse,
C’est la danse heureuse, la danse heureuse heureuse.

There probably are more verses. These are all I can remember.

Weird Al is cool, I wouldn’t say he’s anywhere near my top 10 composer-artist-things, but he has a few really funny songs.

“Way back when I was just a little bitty boy living in a box under the stairs in the corner of the basement of the house half a block down the street from Jerry’s Bait shop
    You know the place
well anyway, back then life was going swell and everything was just peachy

Except, of course, for the undeniable fact that every single morning
My mother would make me a big ol’ bowl of sauerkraut for breakfast

Awww – Big bowl of sauerkraut
    Every single mornin’
    It was driving me crazy

    I said to my mom
I said “Hey, mom, what’s up with all the sauerkraut?”
    And my dear, sweet mother
She just looked at me like a cow looks at an oncoming train,
And she leaned right down next to me
    And she said,
    “IT’S GOOD FOR YOU!!!”
And then she tied me to the wall and stuck a funnel in my mouth
And force fed me nothing but sauerkraut until I was twenty six and a half years old”

the other day I met a member of a group that plays “pirate” music, sea chanties and such, and he wanted me to get ahold of them and have an audition to join……said they were looking for a concertinist, of a fiddler for that matter, the fact that I can sing probably didn’t hurt either.

So, do I want to do it? Maybe. They look like an interesting bunch from what I gather from the website……..frequenters of Renaissance Faires, I see…hmm. I think Ren Faires are fun, as a big fantasy pary, but they ARE NOT HISTORY. I’m sorry, there’s a thin verneer of historical trappings, but that doesn’t make it educating at all. If anything, it should be strictly fantasy, with no history worked in to confuse people.

111/124- Yeah, I can’t even think of a really weird meter that would work for that. The eighth note messes it up. Without the eighth note, it would have to be in 2/4, in which case the whole note doesn’t make sense; it would be half note tied to a half note. So, in conclusion, the eighth note should be a half note and then it would be in 4/4.

Orchestra audition tomorrow, woo. I’m playing a timpani excerpt from Dvorak 7, a snare drum etude, and possibly a short timpani etude. (I have a lesson tomorrow, in which I’ll find out about whether or not I’m playing the timpani etude.)

Finally! Ok, well, you might be wondering why I just said that. I heard that in 6th grade (next year) I will get to play guitar for this orchestra thing called Swinging Strings. Last year and this year I didn’t get to be in band or orchestra (though I occasionally played piano as an accompanist for solos) and I really wanted to. So I get to play my guitar! All I have to do is play some really easy chords.
Well, my school has a choir, so now I’m in two choirs. So far, we’ve been practicing Orinoco Flow a lot, and we’re going to sing it at the town winter parade (we sing a few songs every year), we’ve got a few percussionists from the highschools to play with us. For the parade we’re singing Sleigh Ride, Orinoco Flow (this was a random choice, but we all wanted to sing it), Winter Wonderland, and Do You Hear What I Hear? For the last one, I’m in a small group that sings the solo. I didn’t audition, because I usually don’t for solos, but one of the kids can’t go to the festival, so I’m filling in for him. Finally, at the end of the parade, our choir and a bunch of other ones sing Holly Jolly Christmas.

I’m not a huge fan of Across the Universe ( the movie, not the song. The song is flamablamablous). This is partially why:
I was in the city and you know how sometimes, you just randomly hear music from maybe a concert not far away or some building? Yeah, well, someone was playing Strawberry Fields, and some teenager was like (to her friend) “OMG it’s that song from Across the Universe! I love it! Jim Sturgess is like the best singer ever!” I grew red in the face, and if my sister hadn’t stopped me I would’ve, well, you get the picture.
I also don’t like how the stinkin Jonas Brothers did a cover of Hello Goodbye. I can’t believe they wrote it!”

Hey this is Zinc’s sister! And yes, I have posted on the phyte thread before.

I play clarinet in the marching band at my high school. We are the largest band in our town at 147 members, compared to the two other marching bands at 37 and around 50. We are a parade band, which means we compete primarily in parades, not field shows. We still do feild shows, but they are nowhere near as elaborate as feild show bands’ are.

We won first place in our town fair in early October. It was our tenth consecutive first place. (Yay us!) We missed out on sweepstakes by .5 to a marching band not even in our town, who had pulled out 40 of their worst members. All three band directors, particularly our’s, were furious. Mr. Koala(nickname!) who is really impassioned (he puts his heart and soul into the band) and drives us to our capacities was getting teary when he told us after the event that he would never, ever cut anyone from our band “if they have to cut 40 members out of their band to win, they can just take the trophy and shove it up their-” No, he didn’t actually say the less polite term for a donkey. The band stood up and we gave him a standing ovation.

I might be on somewhat infrequently to talk about the success (or failure, we’re going to a band review (HARD!) for the first time ever (we were established in 2004) and Mr. Koala is saying that he seriously wants to have competition and get his butt whupped) to you guys on the music thread (even though we don’t (luckily) have afterschool practices like many bands do, our music is hard, and I’m learning the oboe for symphonic band so I have to practice two insturments on top of high school homework).

Bye guys, thanks for listening! Please tell me if you like this kind of post. I know not everyone is a bando, but it is interesting! Thanks!

“Fall Out Boy – ‘Sell Outs’?”
Fall Out Boy gained success with their second album, From Under the Cork Tree, and the popular singles Sugar, We’re Goin’ Down and Dance, Dance. (Some believe Evening Out With Your Girlfriend was their first album, but I am quite sure it was an EP.) Their first album, Take This To Your Grave (a bit more on the pop-punk side than FUTCT), was a little popular, but nearly unheard of, and FOB hit the mainstream in ’05. They gained loving fans, and two years later, came out with the song This Ain’t a Scene, It’s An Arms Race.
    “Sell outs!”
Oh, the cries then! Disgracing them, saying that they had changed their sound oh too much from what they were used to! May I ask: is that such a crime? Was not From Under the Cork Tree an ENTIRELY different album from Take This To Your Grave? And then there is that phrase – “sell out”. It seems to mean that, if you are a sell out, you do not do what you are doing for the music. You are just doing it to make money. What does just one song, two songs mean that? And they never, never even appeared to be only in it for the money. They’ve been in it for the music, and now they are there for the fans, as well. Now, they have released more songs, and more people notice that the sound is different, and again the cries of them “selling out” repeat. Every good band changes their sound, and I wonder, how does that mean that they are traitors and greedy?

    I think I got a lot out. Ho-hum.
    My writing style is strange.

the flutes are in an uproar because everybody hates their chair except tori, and even she thinks feds should be first. but feds had a bad audition, and the flutes are dumb and tell each other that they won’t challenge. which is a total lie but we’ll let them feel superior about it for a few days until their egos get the better of them

Okay, so my current theme song is ‘Rainbow Connection.’ It’s such a poetic, intresting, and unique song: I LOVES IT!

I have a few more songs to add:

    *Songs:

    • Absolutely
    • How to Save a Life
    • On the Plane
    • A Thousand Miles (?)
    • Mad Dogs and Englishmen

There. A lot of songs in the Songs catagory are songs I’ve heard on the radio and/or Pandora, like On the PLane, A Thousand Miles, Absolutely, and others. More will inevitably added. Now, I’m off to finish the A section. *scurries off*

279- Um, it’s an African instrument sometimes called a thumb piano. It sounds kinda like a mixture of a harp/vibraphone and bell kit when you play it…it’s small enough to hold in your hands. They sound beautiful.

302–Have fun! I envy you, though.

315–Ugh. John’s probably rolling in his grave.

So, today, we had our Christmas parade. Aaand drumline (including the, *ahem,* cymbalist) didn’t get to wear gloves. However, the other two percussionists, the banner, did get to wear gloves. It was something like twenty-six degrees out. For two miles. About three hours outside. I can still type tho, and play piano. Thank God. The movies afterward made up for it.

Anybody else have to suffer through parades recently?

    I can’t wait to catch Macy’s on Thursday…find the marching bands. :)

328- Oooh, I had one of those once! Then my bookshelf broke, and a Harry Potter book fell on it… so I don’t have one anymore.

328: My sister’s going to shove my face into the TV to look at the marching bands. And speaking of marching bands, BHS’s is coming to PMS on Tues. to perform for us little band geeks. He.

328-we don’t have a christmas parade, fortunately. except this year we’re going to disney, but the parade is fairly short.

parades can be fun or not, depending. our parades usually get rained on, and recently johnson has stopped us from running around within the lines and switching places with people to talk. walking backwards is still an option, if you remain in step and if he’s not looking. other than that, not much fun. also there is dramaz about who gets to be in the first line. (i’m usually second line, so i get to witness the theatrics)

Our school’s band had to do a parade for the homecoming at the High School, which was funny, because I got to sit in the bleachers and laugh at all my old band friends looking stupid on the field.

Our band SUCKS, even if they are playing Green Day and My Chemical Romance.

I put Being For The Benifit of Mr. Kite on the CD I burned for art class. :)
