Yes! Thank you GAPAs! 1492 was the year in which Sir Nicholas de Mimsy-Porpington nearly lost his head, after being hit 45 times in the neck with a blunt axe. Thus, “Nearly Headless Nick” is what the Hogwarts students call him. In more straight forward terms 1492 was the year of Nearly Headless Nick’s death (Oct. 31, to be exact).

Think back to your fairy tales, and that might give you an idea as to which he would be–you know, all the stories about three brothers going on quests, and it was always the same one who was intelligent and accomplished the goal…..That said, I think I just gave the answer away.

This isn’t really trivia, but it is HP. ok, out of boredom, while waiting for an episode of an old TV show I used to watch (1996-2000: The Pretender) to buffer, I was playing the Wizard Challenge trivia games at scholastic’s HP website. So, for starters, they have added a greater variety since I was last there, but the idiots really don’t proofread the questions the kids send in. And I realize, not every HP fan knows exactly how to spell HP things, but seriously, it’s not Cormac McClaggen–it Cormac McLaggen. And the whole “Rita Skeeter Daily Opinion Poll” (which has ahd the same question since Sept 30) is always so screwy–I don’t think I’ve seen a single one where characters/locations/whatever/names are spelled correctly. It’s utterly stupidly unbelievalb.e I mean, it’s a website put on by the bloody US publsihers of the books! One would think they could glance at the questions before using them, and that as the freakin’ publishers, they might actually have a better idea than me as to how to spell everything. But, wait–I forgot! SCHOLASTIC IS ABSOLUTELY RETARDED! Just look at the way they americanized the books, and–ok, I am going off on a tangent….I think I will go check on the painfully slow buffering of my TV show…..

MissSwann! I’ve been thinking. For our contest, how about we set a couple of ground rules:
1. This one’s fairly obvious: Answers must be from memory–no looking them up online or in the books
2. Only questions that are answered in the books (i.e. not off of JKR’s website). However, I am willing to scratch this rule, if you wish. It matters not.
3. Um, I don’t really think there are anymore….Lessee–points. Let’s call them pottermania points, and we can store them in our names for the duration of our tournament.
Ok, on to questions–I currently have a possible 200 moderately hard to hard questions to draw from, and about 300 more easy-ish ones to draw from. I was thinking that maybe one of us posts a few questions, and then the other posts their answers and then a list of their own questions, and we go back and forth until our question supply is exhausted, we get bored (unlikely), or one of us chooses to admit defeat. Or else we could just play until a set number of points. I’m open to suggestions here.
Also, I was thinking that we might request other bloggers not to post answers to the questions we ask during the course of the tournament, and that mayhap the GAPAs would consider giving us a thread? That would be so much more fun. Whadda you say, GAPA dearest? A thread for the battle for the title of the most rabid Potter fan on MuseBlog?

Robert: As you may have gathered, MissSwann and I have challenged each other to a Harry Potter trivia competition (idea formed on the HP summer 2007 thread after POSOC called me MB’s most rabid HP fan). I was thinking it would be fun to have a separate thread, even though technically it is still HP trivia. Although I originally had the idea that only MissSwann and I would be allowed to post answers to each others’ questions, I have since revised that (see post 57).
The thread would still primarily be a “duel” as you put it, between me and MissSwann, and it would be appreciated if other bloggers didn’t answer questions until MissSwann or I (whomever’s turn it is) had had a chance, as the competition is technically between us, but i have decided it wouldn’t be fair to ask them not to answer at all.
I hope that solves your confusion…..

Luna — Yes, I think I understand. On general principles, I’d rather not start creating threads specifically for limited subsets of MBers, and I certainly don’t want to have to police a thread to keep others from posting on it. So I’m afraid I’ll have to say “no” this time.
Why don’t you have your trivia showdown on this thread and simply ask everyone else not to answer until the one of you being challenged has either responded or given up? I suspect they would cooperate.

The only potential problem is that I think I might have a slight advantage, given as I seem to be on MB more frequently than MissSwann. Not that I know the answer, anyway……But I shall hazard a guess. I am going to guess that she graduated when Harry was a fourth year (as in, spring that year), so calculating based on Nick’s Deathday, that would be 1995. But I really have no idea.

Mississippi, eh? Is horribly hot there? Of course, everybody here thinks I’m wacky that I think the 60s/70s is hot for this time of year, and they also think I’m wacky for thinking there should be snow in October–apparently this part of the state, they get snow around the beginning of december, but just a few hours south, where my roomie is from, they don’t usually get any until February. At which point back home, we’re usually ready for winter to be over already, although we usually still have snow on the ground through March, evenpart of April, although not necessarily an y fresh snowfall–although it’s not unusual, either. May is the latest we ever had a snowfall in my memory back in AK, and that was kind of a freak one. April is the absolute latest i would consider it normal, and even then, I don’t appreciate it, because I’m ready for summer…..I WANT COLD! I WANT SNOW!

90- I think the 70’s is a pleasant tempature, and do remember, we get no snow. EVER. Our bloody climate isn’t right. I’ve played in snow about, hm, TWO TIMES, and I think it’s kinda weird if it pours in the middle of summer. That’s how adjusted to this climate I am.

91–don’t get me wrong, I think 70’s is a pleasant temperature as well–back home in the summer, the 70’s is a nice delightful beautiful warm (even hot) summer day. Here, earlier in the year, the 70’s was a nice, pleasantly cool, almost, temperature–a nice break from the 90’s. Now, as we continue into October, when apparently on Tuesday, a town 20 minutes from where I live back in AK got 6 inches of snow (most of which has melted), and it is still in the 60’s at coolest here at school down in the Midwest, well the 70’s is hotter than I want. This is the time of year when every day you look outside hoping it may have snowed. To not have at least had snow by Halloween (even if much/some of it has melted) is unusual, and considered a bad winter…..
So, when normally it would be in the 30’s/40’s this time of year,and the weather here is (obviously) warmer than I’m used to already, well, it seems hot, and I would like snow before December.
And I am very, very sorry that you don’t live somewhere with snow….I could never do that. Snow is so fun!!!!!

92- Oh, well. I still quite like it here. My lovely small town is practically devoid of gangs, gunfights, and criminals. Except for a few house break ins (three, but those happened a long time ago) and car crashes, we’re a very clean town. We have a lot of parks and schools and small businesses, so een though we don’t have snow, and we get barely any rain, Orange County is a very nice place to live. We have sunlight every day (except in the winter; that’s our cloud/rain season) and, heck- we have the ORIGANAL Disneyland! The true Disney park! Walt Disney saw these rides being built, and he designed them himself!

Do you know, I am so much happier now that I happened across this site from which I could download all the HP books as pdfs onto my computer. I know Harry got an O in DADA, a P in Divinations, and a D in History of Magic. Oh, poor Harry. And I’m sure he got Es in Charms, Herbology, Potions, and Transfiguration. Not sure about the others, though.

137–I presume you mean the scene with the Amortentia,and the following scene. During Potions, it is established that the Amortentia smells differently to everyone–it smells like something they love/turns them on/whatever (don’t remember the exact wording). And Harry smells a flowery smell he remembers smelling at the Burrow. Then, skip to the next scene, Ginny walks past, and there is a vague mention of him smelling the same flowery smell that the Amortentia manifested as…..
Sad to say, I did not pick up on this the first time I read it–somehow my mind never read/processed/whatever the sentence about smelling the flowery smell when Ginny walked by, but I did notice it on my second read through, just two weeks later…..It’s amazing the things you pick up the second or even third/fourth/fifth/sixth/etc time through…….

Of course, my denial ended the moment we saw SS’s memories, and I started sobbing my heart out, but….that’s another story.
But it could be argued, I think, that Harry died, but I’m not sure 25 cents is worth it…..

I’m just saying that technically, he died, if only for a short period. Here’s my theory – he died, and had the choice of going back to life or staying dead. That solid explanation is worth 25 cents.
I really, really liked (in DH):

-the battle of hogwarts, especially the very end in the great hall
-the epic scene where neville defeated nagini
-SS’s memories

Yeah, those were all great scense. At the BoH, I especially liked when Kreacher led the house elves to attack. It was touching. and when Harry knocked Draco out, from beneath his cloak. And then there were all the priceless little moments–Hermione, and her comment about Harry’s polyjuice potion: “Mm, you look much tastier than Crabbe and Goyle, harry!” That had me in stitches,a nd all of JKR’s wizardized version of Muggle sayings, at least one of which cracks me up because of the meaning in conjures for me–the wizard version of “yanking your chain”……”I’m only yanking your wand.” That made me choke…..wonder if she intended that, or if she didnt’ think of most peoples minds would jump to……
And yup, I love the neville/Nagini scene, especially because I can only imagine the priceless look on Griphook’s face as his precious sword is snatched away from him by the wizards…….bit of vindictive pleasure, there.
Oh, and where they flush themselves into the ministry–I love that, because when I was little, I created this fantasy world of witches in my head, and the way you got to their world (which was underground…..huh, Hell, anyone?) was by flushing yourself down the toilet. So, that was really odd (and funny) when that was the way they got into the Ministry……..

Double points (yes, I’m aware that there aren’t points) if you can answer the one about the chapter, since I always find chapter names and such so hard to look up at… I have no idea why, I just almost never do it. Not always a bad thing, given that the chapter title usually gives away at least part of the plot… Oh wait, I’m digressing. I’ve read the books so many times. The other day at school my friend mentioned how the books are based off of WWII, and I started talking about how Dumbledore defeated Grindlewald during WWII and Nurmengard and the similarities between Nazis and Death Eaters. Then I realized she had no idea what I was talking about. *sigh*
It would be fun to play Harry Potter Trivia with you too, but I’m quite certain you know the books somewhat better than me, so I’d have to reread them all a couple times. Actually, as soon as I finish The Sweet Far Thing, I’m planning on rereading OotP. I haven’t read that one in quite a while.

I mean, Grindelwald was defeated in 1945, the same year Hitler committed suicide. Grindelwald’s slogan of “For the Greater Good” sounds like something Hitler would say, since he was, to an extent practicing eugenics, trying to breed a better race, and Grindelwald’s wishes for imprisoning muggles or whatever for there safety sounds like what Hitler was doing with the Jews.
And Nurmengard sounds so very much like Nuremberg (actually, when I was reading the book, I could’ve sworn that Nurmengard had actually been the name of a concentration camp, but my sis pointed me in the right direction toward Nuremberg where so many trials were held.) But, yeah.
And if I know the books/questions better, it would only be because I made the questions for my trivia game, but honestly? I’ve forgotten so many of the answers. LIke all the wand lengths/compositions/etc.

I agree totally. Every reread you find something new, some little allusion either in a name or place or just something that you’d never noticed before that continues to heighten your appreciation of the books and JKR’s brilliance.
Um, I”m not sure. *looks* Yes, greengrocers. And thus, Umbridge claimed Mary couldn’t possibly have been chosen by the wand in her possession, but rather than she ahd stolen it…..That whole scene and all of it makes me so sick. Especially since it is so believalbe, because people have done such horrid things for years. We did it with African slaves, Germany with Jew (among others), and on and on and on back through the beginning of time, and people still do it currently. It’s horrible.

Well, technically Fluffy is the real name, as that’s what Hagrid named the dog. However, Fluffy is, clearly, supposed to have been modeled off the three headed dog, Cerberus, who guards the entrance to the underworld in greek mythology (as you point out). And if the three headed part weren’t enough of a clue, Hagrid bought him off a “greek chappie” in a pub.

Sirius is the “Dog Star”. Thus, he was (intentionally) very aptly named by Rowling, as he turns into a dog…..Also, his last name, “Black”, is the color of the dog.

It has been suggested that Dumbledore is bee-like (affinity for sweets; one foreign translation apparently added a line about Dumbledore liking to hum like a bee). But, yes, a gastrolith (in medical terms) is a stony concretion found in the stomachs of some animals. Harry marries Ginny, and has three children: James, Albus, and Lily (in that order). He also fosters Teddy Lupin most of the time. Neville becomes Herbology teacher at Hogwarts. Hermione and Ron get married and have Rose and Hugo (again, in that order). Malfoy and presumably Pansy Parkinson marry and have Scorpius.
Also, I-Man, did you notice that Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen has EXACTLY the same events before the ending as the Deathly Hallows? I’ll just sum it up for you:
The main character’s hero (and the most powerful protagonist) dies, so the main character is left to defeat the main antagonist on his own. The main antagonist starts sending out his infantry, and says that he will spare the Earth/Hogwarts if the main character is brought to him. The main character turns himself over, supposedly dies, and has a vision of his hero. He is revived again…
…and then the two stories go their separate ways. Still, that’s an uncomfortable similarity.

I wish…..I managed to make the time to read HBP prior to seeing the, er, do I have to use the term “movie” to describe it? Utter piece of total trash is a much more apt description……It does not deserve to have the name “Harry Potter” in the title. It was not Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince the movie, but Harry Potter and Teenage Hormones Run Amuck Between Utterly Pointless Battles Absent in the Series.

I quite liked the movie, actually. True, they overemphasized the hormones and stuck in a random battle at the Burrow, but I felt like they at least got the essence of most of the events in the book in there. Unlike in the dreadful previous couple movies, where they basically took a chainsaw to the plot and chopped out everything that wasn’t absolutely essential.

But they took a chainsaw to this plot way worse than any other! I mean, the horcruxes–Dumbledore, in the book, told Harry what he believed the Horcruxes to be, whereas in the movie, Harry was left not only not knowing the locations, but not knowing what the Horcruxes were, either. And in the movie Dumbledore as good as told Harry he was a Horcrux, with that meaningful look he gave Harry at one point.
The whole thing with the Horcruxes was screwed up so horribly in the movie, I haven’t a clue on how they plan to salvage it. I personally found this one to be the least loyal to the book of them all. Five was pretty bad, too, but it was by the same guy (David Yates), so unsurprising.
Sure, previous ones took out “extraneous” stuff (stuff I would have liked to see, don’t get me wrong–i wish the movies were 100% loyal to the books) but this one not only took out some of that same tyype of stuff, but completely butchered every single thing they did keep, and not just minor things either (although it had its fair share of that, just like previous movies).
*sigh* I guess we shall just have to agree to disagree.

Hmm. Now, you do have a point about the horcruxes. The seventh movie is going to be really contrived. They already left out Sirius’s mirror too, and that’s vital to the plot.

And the skipped over Kreacher and Mundungus stealing things form Grimmauld Place, so not sure how they’re going to segue into Harry and company going to the Ministry to get the locket from Umbridge after she stole it from Mundungus who stole it from Kreacher….
I don’t know what on earth Yates plans to do to sort out the seventh movie. I do so wish they’d bring Columbus back–he was the best of all the HP directors. But, alas, 3 1/2 of the 7 1/2 movies will be done by the worst director in the history of HP directing: Yates. *sniffle*

muselover–those were only a tiny fraction of my reasons for hating it. Every single change, and every little innuendo between Harry and Ginny, Ron and Hermione, that didn’t occur in the books had me gesticulating wildly with my hands (well, my parents said I could yell at the screen in the theatre) and getting increasingly frustrated and pissed off. For instance, the intro scene, with Harry hitting on some Muggle girl. What the cake???????
Grrrrr. I don’t even remember all the reasons I hated it, but the serious Horcrux plot changes, the intro scene, no “other minister” scene, the way the Borgin and Burkes scene played out, the lack of suspense over Malfoy’s activities, the way they failed to leave any doubt about Snape’s loyalties, the way Dumbledore as good as said Harry was a Horcrux, Harry sass when on Felix, that whole “I am the Chose One” nonsense Harry would NEVER say, and basically every other blasted change.
Oh, like the whole action scene at the Burrow? Seriously, that didn’t happen: SKIP IT. Included the battle at Hogwarts, instead. I mean, if they were so big on action scenes, then keep the ones in the book and skip adding fake ones. They could ahve had a marvelous battle at Hogwarts, instead of just having Bellatrix run around smashing things. I mean, really. They should seriously consider sacking yates as director. He SUCKS.

I’ve got an image in my head now of the eyes in the bushes at the beginning of the chapter when Harry first meets Dobby, as well as an image from the movie of Dobby dropping the cake/pudding on Mrs. Mason’s head……
And thinking of the image in the book at the start of the chapter has in turn made me think of how the British editions (Bloomsbury) lack these little illustrations, which is turn makes me think of what I noticed the other day: My Doctor Who and Torchwood books smell exactly like my Bloomsbury editions of the HP books. They have that same delicious paper scent, a flavor unique (until now) to my Bloomsbury HP’s…..I think I like British books. They smell good.

Presumably he’s hiding somewhere in the Forest of Dean, as that’s where the sword is hidden No, wait, you don’t have to be in the same location as your Patronus, elsewise it wouldn’t do much good for the Order to use them as a way of conveying messages. I do believe he was conversing with Dumbledore’s portrait and he sent out his Patronus (a deer, by the way) and Dumbledore remarks upon the fact that the Patronus is still a deer. I think that’s what happened.

Although the Sliteen (that’s their family name, not their species, I forget if we learned their species) can take on human for–or, rather, they zip themselves into a human skin-suit, taken from a dead human–but as far as I know they still need the skin from a large human, not a skinny 19 year old. And as I can’t even spell Raxacoricofallapatorius, I couldn’t possibly be from there (I’ve always wanted an excuse to say the word, typing it is almost as cool).
