Harry Potter Trivia-Off, Part 2

Impress your fellow MBers by showing how much you know about something that doesn’t matter very much.

(NOTE: This is thread number 1492 — and coincidentally, 1492 is the year in which something significant happened to a prominent denizen of Hogwarts. Who was en, and what was the event?)

  1. Luna the Lovely says:

Yes! Thank you GAPAs! 1492 was the year in which Sir Nicholas de Mimsy-Porpington nearly lost his head, after being hit 45 times in the neck with a blunt axe. Thus, “Nearly Headless Nick” is what the Hogwarts students call him. In more straight forward terms 1492 was the year of Nearly Headless Nick’s death (Oct. 31, to be exact).

Which Peverell brother is Harry descended from?

What class does Neville Longbottom teach at Hogwarts?

Did Ron use magic to pass his driving test?

It’s utterly stupidly unbelievalb.e I mean, it’s a website put on by the bloody US publsihers of the books! One would think they could glance at the questions before using them, and that as the freakin’ publishers, they might actually have a better idea than me as to how to spell everything. Or else we could just play until a set number of points. I’m open to suggestions here.

Mississippi, eh? Is horribly hot there? Of course, everybody here thinks I’m wacky that I think the 60s/70s is hot for this time of year, and they also think I’m wacky for thinking there should be snow in October–apparently this part of the state, they get snow around the beginning of december, but just a few hours south, where my roomie is from, they don’t usually get any until February. At which point back home, we’re usually ready for winter to be over already, although we usually still have snow on the ground through March, evenpart of April, although not necessarily an y fresh snowfall–although it’s not unusual, either. May is the latest we ever had a snowfall in my memory back in AK, and that was kind of a freak one. April is the absolute latest i would consider it normal, and even then, I don’t appreciate it, because I’m ready for summer…..I WANT COLD! I WANT SNOW!

91–don’t get me wrong, I think 70’s is a pleasant temperature as well–back home in the summer, the 70’s is a nice delightful beautiful warm (even hot) summer day. Here, earlier in the year, the 70’s was a nice, pleasantly cool, almost, temperature–a nice break from the 90’s. Now, as we continue into October, when apparently on Tuesday, a town 20 minutes from where I live back in AK got 6 inches of snow (most of which has melted), and it is still in the 60’s at coolest here at school down in the Midwest, well the 70’s is hotter than I want. This is the time of year when every day you look outside hoping it may have snowed. To not have at least had snow by Halloween (even if much/some of it has melted) is unusual, and considered a bad winter…..

So, when normally it would be in the 30’s/40’s this time of year, and the weather here is (obviously) warmer than I’m used to already, well, it seems hot, and I would like snow before December.

Harry failed Divination and History of Mafic–either P or D–don’t remember which was which, or heck, they could’ve both been the same. I dunno.

I think Ron failed Divinations and HoM too, didn’t he? I seem to remember his scores were similar to Harry’s on those subjects.

Hermione got Os on everything except DADA.

And wow, I know way more HP trivia than I thought. I guess that’s what comes from reading the books dozens of times each. One day, I was bored on the bus so I memorized the first three pages of the Sorcerer’s Stone. It’s really fun to recite it and watch the looks on people’s faces.

Gosh, this isn’t a trivia question, but I don’t believe there is another Harry Potter thread…

I’ve just been browsing mugglenet, and there’s this post (c+p’d):

We’re a little late on this, but at the end of October USA Today compiled a list of the best-selling books in the past 15 years.

Unsurprisingly, the Harry Potter books took 7 of the top 10 spots. Here’s how they ranked:

    1) Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone
    2) Dr. Atkins’ New Diet Revolution
    3) The Da Vinci Code
    4) Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows
    5) Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix
    6) Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince
    7) Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets
    8) Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban
    9) Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire
    10) Who Moved My Cheese?

Now, while we ignore #10, which has to be the most hilariously random title ever, this is somehow making me depressed. I’ve been suffering from PPD since a month after DH, obviously, but I dunno. The series is over, no more books except Beedle the Bard which doesn’t really count. Movies don’t count either. Harry Potter just seems so much like a thing of the past now, and that makes me very sad. I want my childhood back. :(

And it’s making me hate Twilight lots more than I did yesterday. Why must so many people love it, instead of my dear HP which is so much more deserving of their adoration? *sobs*

    *recovers*
Ah, let’s throw in a little something actually related to the thread, though I don’t know what trivia’s been covered, really…

And Harry smells a flowery smell he remembers smelling at the Burrow. Then, skip to the next scene, Ginny walks past, and there is a vague mention of him smelling the same flowery smell that the Amortentia manifested as…..

Sad to say, I did not pick up on this the first time I read it–somehow my mind never read/processed/whatever the sentence about smelling the flowery smell when Ginny walked by, but I did notice it on my second read through, just two weeks later…..It’s amazing the things you pick up the second or even third/fourth/fifth/sixth/etc time through…….

Actually, I just tend to get carried away and babble on about all the extra detail of something, if I know anything about it to begin with. yeah, like when somebody asked what the first word/sentence of PS was, and I supplied at least the first two paragraphs? Perfect example…….

And Harry doesn’t exactly die, but in a way he did. I mean, he was in limbo, and he didn’t have to choose life–he could have gone on, instead. Fortunately, of course, he chose life, or the book could have ended much differently. So you bet that Harry would die, then? I can see how it wouldn’t have been hard to think (I honestly kinda did, but was on denial, and wouldn’t allow myself to believe it, decided that if I really was right about HP being a Horcrux, that something else would be worked out). Of course, my denial ended the moment we saw SS’s memories, and I started sobbing my heart out, but….that’s another story.

But it could be argued, I think, that Harry died, but I’m not sure 25 cents is worth it…..

I’m just saying that technically, he died, if only for a short period. Here’s my theory – he died, and had the choice of going back to life or staying dead. That solid explanation is worth 25 cents.

I really, really liked (in DH):
-The part where Ginny kissed Harry
-the tale of the three brothers
-the battle of hogwarts, especially the very end in the great hall
-the epic scene where neville defeated nagini
    -SS’s memories

Yeah, those were all great scense. At the BoH, I especially liked when Kreacher led the house elves to attack. It was touching. and when Harry knocked Draco out, from beneath his cloak. And then there were all the priceless little moments–Hermione, and her comment about Harry’s polyjuice potion: “Mm, you look much tastier than Crabbe and Goyle, harry!” That had me in stitches,a nd all of JKR’s wizardized version of Muggle sayings, at least one of which cracks me up because of the meaning in conjures for me–the wizard version of “yanking your chain”……”I’m only yanking your wand.” That made me choke…..wonder if she intended that, or if she didnt’ think of most peoples minds would jump to……

And yup, I love the neville/Nagini scene, especially because I can only imagine the priceless look on Griphook’s face as his precious sword is snatched away from him by the wizards…….bit of vindictive pleasure, there.

Oh, and where they flush themselves into the ministry–I love that, because when I was little, I created this fantasy world of witches in my head, and the way you got to their world (which was underground…..huh, Hell, anyone?) was by flushing yourself down the toilet. ble staircase into the entrance hall.

“I’m Draco Malfoy, I’m Draco, I’m on your side!” Draco was on the upper landing, pleading with another masked Death Eater. Harry Stunned the Death Eater as they passed. Malfoy looked around, beaming, for his savior, and Ron punched him from under the Cloak. Malfoy fell backward on top of the Death Eater, his mouth bleeding, utterly bemused.

“And that’s the second time we’ve saved your life tonight, you two—faced bastard!” Ron yelled.

What is, according to several different places, Hermione’s ‘specialty’?

What is the description of the Goblet of Fire?

    BONUS QUESTION
What was the name of the chapter in bk 4 (can you tell which book I’m reading?) in which Harry finds out why Neville lives with his grandmother?

I think that’s enough for now… Don’t want to implode your brain. Keep in mind that a good number of these, I only know because I was just reading the books, or I don’t know the answer, and will look up once you guess them. Double points (yes, I’m aware that there aren’t points) if you can answer the one about the chapter, since I always find chapter names and such so hard to look up at… I have no idea why, I just almost never do it. Not always a bad thing, given that the chapter title usually gives away at least part of the plot… Oh wait, I’m digressing. Actually, that word isn’t particularly apt here, given that there’s not much of a topic to digress from, but I’m getting off topic anyway.

I mean, Grindelwald was defeated in 1945, the same year Hitler committed suicide. Grindelwald’s slogan of “For the Greater Good” sounds like something Hitler would say, since he was, to an extent practicing eugenics, trying to breed a better race, and Grindelwald’s wishes for imprisoning muggles or whatever for there safety sounds like what Hitler was doing with the Jews.

And Nurmengard sounds so very much like Nuremberg (actually, when I was reading the book, I could’ve sworn that Nurmengard had actually been the name of a concentration camp, but my sis pointed me in the right direction toward Nuremberg where so many trials were held.) But, yeah.

And if I know the books/questions better, it would only be because I made the questions for my trivia game, but honestly? I’ve forgotten so many of the answers. LIke all the wand lengths/compositions/etc.

Dumbledore is old English (or some sort of English) for “bumblebee”. To quote Robert from the “HP, Summer 2007” thread, post 267 ( https://musefanpage.com/blog/?p=954 ): In some parts of England (mainly Kent, I think), “Dumbledore” is an old-fashioned English word for a bumblebee. Q1-

      DEATHLY HALLOWS SPOILER ALERT.

Harry marries Ginny, and has three children: James, Albus, and Lily (in that order). He also fosters Teddy Lupin most of the time. Neville becomes Herbology teacher at Hogwarts. Hermione and Ron get married and have Rose and Hugo (again, in that order). Malfoy and presumably Pansy Parkinson marry and have Scorpius.

Also, I-Man, did you notice that Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen has EXACTLY the same events before the ending as the Deathly Hallows? I’ll just sum it up for you:

The main character’s hero (and the most powerful protagonist) dies, so the main character is left to defeat the main antagonist on his own. The main antagonist starts sending out his infantry, and says that he will spare the Earth/Hogwarts if the main character is brought to him. The main character turns himself over, supposedly dies, and has a vision of his hero. He is revived again…

…and then the two stories go their separate ways. Still, that’s an uncomfortable similarity.

True, they overemphasized the hormones and stuck in a random battle at the Burrow, but I felt like they at least got the essence of most of the events in the book in there. Unlike in the dreadful previous couple movies, where they basically took a chainsaw to the plot and chopped out everything that wasn’t absolutely essential.

But they took a chainsaw to this plot way worse than any other! I mean, the horcruxes–Dumbledore, in the book, told Harry what he believed the Horcruxes to be, whereas in the movie, Harry was left not only not knowing the locations, but not knowing what the Horcruxes were, either. And in the movie Dumbledore as good as told Harry he was a Horcrux, with that meaningful look he gave Harry at one point.

The whole thing with the Horcruxes was screwed up so horribly in the movie, I haven’t a clue on how they plan to salvage it. I personally found this one to be the least loyal to the book of them all. Five was pretty bad, too, but it was by the same guy (David Yates), so unsurprising.

Sure, previous ones took out “extraneous” stuff (stuff I would have liked to see, don’t get me wrong–i wish the movies were 100% loyal to the books) but this one not only took out some of that same tyype of stuff, but completely butchered every single thing they did keep, and not just minor things either (although it had its fair share of that, just like previous movies).

*sigh* I guess we shall just have to agree to disagree.

And the skipped over Kreacher and Mundungus stealing things form Grimmauld Place, so not sure how they’re going to segue into Harry and company going to the Ministry to get the locket from Umbridge after she stole it from Mundungus who stole it from Kreacher….

I don’t know what on earth Yates plans to do to sort out the seventh movie. I do so wish they’d bring Columbus back–he was the best of all the HP directors. Every single change, and every little innuendo between Harry and Ginny, Ron and Hermione, that didn’t occur in the books had me gesticulating wildly with my hands (well, my parents said I could yell at the screen in the theatre) and getting increasingly frustrated and pissed off. For instance, the intro scene, with Harry hitting on some Muggle girl. What the cake???????

Grrrrr. I don’t even remember all the reasons I hated it, but the serious Horcrux plot changes, the intro scene, no “other minister” scene, the way the Borgin and Burkes scene played out, the lack of suspense over Malfoy’s activities, the way they failed to leave any doubt about Snape’s loyalties, the way Dumbledore as good as said Harry was a Horcrux, Harry sass when on Felix, that whole “I am the Chose One” nonsense Harry would NEVER say, and basically every other blasted change.

Oh, like the whole action scene at the Burrow? Seriously, that didn’t happen: SKIP IT. Included the battle at Hogwarts, instead. I mean, if they were so big on action scenes, then keep the ones in the book and skip adding fake ones. The Masons were in the second book. They came on Harry’s birthday and Uncle Vernon was going to make a deal while Harry sat in his room making no noise and pretending he wasn’t there. Then Dobby showed up and used the hover charm. An owl came from the Ministry, and Mrs. Mason ran away shrieking. Mr. Mason stayed long enough to inform the Dursleys that his wife was terrified of birds and to ask if it was supposed to be some sort of joke. Then Harry was locked in his room for the rest of the summer.

First think of a person that lives in disguise, [something] in secrets and tells naught but lies.
Next [something] always the last thing to mend, the middle of middle and end of the end.
[Something something] a sound often heard during a search for a hard-to-find word.
Now put it together and riddle me this: What is the creature you wouldn’t want to kiss?

Or… something close to that. I know I probably messed up the phrasing in some places, but hey, it’s enough to answer the riddle: spider. I remember Harry’s initial thought was a blast-ended skrewt.

            Yes, 7.

It’s okay. I’m confused too–like I said, somewhere, I was still asleep when I posted. Okay. #8 the “uh…..” was me going and looking up the answer because I couldn’t remember if 47 was correct. The “close” that I gave for #9 was supposed to be tacked onto #8 after the “uh…..”. Because 47 is very close to the correct age.

I missed #9 entirely. Mongolia is the correct answer. Sorry for the confusion….I only got 6 hours of sleep last night, and wasn’t very coherent this morning after spending the first 30 minutes of being up trying (unsuccessfully) to find the link to the housing contract for next year, that was supposed to be up at 7 am. But was not up. At all. So, yeah…..

Susan. Amelia Susan Bones, who has a niece named Susan attending Hogwarts, who asks Harry if his Patronus is a corporeal patronus during the first meeting of the DA in Aberforth’s pub, the Hogs Head, at which point Harry flashes back to Amelia’s questioning of him at his trial at the Ministry in front of the Wizengamot at the Ministry of Magic, and he inquire what her name is/asks if she’s related to Amelia Bones.

Rodolphus Lestrange, brother of Rabastan Lestrange. The three of them (definitely Rodolphus and Bellatrix, anyway) tortured Frank and Alice Longbottom (Neville’s parents) into insanity, which is why they are permanent patients at St. Mungo’s Hospital for Magical Maladies and Injuries, located on the same wing as former Professor of Defence Against the Dark Arts, the incredibly vain and narcissistic Gilderoy Lockhart. Also the same wing on which Broderick Bode was living, before his untimely death at the hands of a potted plant–Devil’s Snare, to be precise.
