Wow, awesome pic! Of course, it would be impossible to carve in RL…..Given the two (perhaps more) little pieces of pumpkin that are not cut out, but are not attached to anything….

I need to get a pumpking, and get carving designs…..and figure out if I need a costume (in other words, is there a party on campus I might go to on or around Hallowe’en for which I require a costume) and what that costume would be….I’ve considered ahving mom send me my Luna costume, except I hate wearing the same costume more than one year (you never would have guessed that when I was a little kid (like back before I really even remember) when i wanted to be a tiger nearly every year, and m,om had to make me at least two tiger costumes, because I grew out of my old one) and I’d be worried about what the postal service would do to it in transit…..they are very violent to packages–my sister got a package at school one that mom had sent, that contained a can of pineapple, and the postal service had somehow managed to bust the can of pineapple open, so it had leaked all over everything else in the package. Yuck.

I don’t know what’s happened to me. Middle school has somehow changed me into the kind of person that, in fifth grade, I hated most. A slacker, a crier, and a horrible soccer player. For three conscectutive practices, our coach has chosen captains to pick teams for scrimmage. And for three consecutive times. I have been chosen LAST. But last night, I broke down and cried. Then I cried about five more times that night. What’s happened?!

    53- What’s KMO?

Ugh I am rather unhappy. I feel that I’m turning into an argumentative person and have no idea how to change that. I think it happened over the summer, when I formed Opinions. More Opinions than I had, that is. So now I’m Opinionated and argue my point of view whenever possible. I was sick of being quiet and “cute” when I was even acknowledged, so I opened up and voiced my Opinions, and now I don’t like who I’m turning into and I’m not quite sure how to go back to be quiet, or at least arguing less. Maybe I should keep a diary. Hmm.

Rehearsal was dreadful today because the director was sick and so our stage manager tried to manage us, but he wasn’t enthusiastic and neither was I. It seemed like the main objective was to get out of rehearsal ASAP, and since it’s all monologues, there isn’t much running of lines and stuff, which would be simpler and more fun. We tried to warm up but no one was leading, so we didn’t get past stretching. It was fairly useless and sort of quenched my enthusiasm regarding Shakespeare (we’re reading aloud a scene from Romeo and Juliet) and Light Design (we’re taking inventory, which would be boring, except it’s not).

Congress OKs historic bailout bill; Bush signs it

WASHINGTON – With the economy on the brink and elections looming, Congress approved an unprecedented $700 billion government bailout of the battered financial industry on Friday and sent it to President Bush who quickly signed it.

“We have acted boldly to help prevent the crisis on Wall Street from becoming a crisis in communities across our country,” Bush said shortly after the vote, although he conceded, “our economy continues to face serious challenges.”

Underscoring that somber warning, the Dow Jones industrials, up more than 200 points at the time of the House vote, ended the day down 157.

The final vote, 263-171 in the House, capped two weeks of tumult in Congress and on Wall Street, punctuated by daily warnings that the country confronted the gravest economic crisis since the Great Depression if lawmakers failed to act. There were 58 more votes for the measure than an earlier version that failed on Monday.

“We all know that we are in the midst of a financial crisis,” House Republican leader John Boehner of Ohio said shortly before casting his vote for a massive government intervention in private capital markets that was unthinkable only a month ago.

“And we know that if we do nothing, this crisis is likely to worsen and to put us into an economic slump like most of us have never seen,” he said.

House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, D-Calif., said the bill was needed to “begin to shape the financial stability of our country and the economic security of our people.”

Treasury Secretary Henry Paulson pledged to begin using his new authority quickly, and Federal Reserve Chairman Ben Bernanke said the central bank would work closely with the administration.

Wall Street welcomed the action, but investors also were buffeted by a bad report on the job market. The Labor Department said employers slashed 159,000 jobs in September, the largest cut in five years and further evidence of a sinking economy.

At its core, the bill gives the Treasury Department $700 billion to purchase bad mortage-related securities that are weighing down the balance sheets of institutions that hold them. The flow of credit in the U.S. economy has slowed, in some cases drying up, threatening the ability of businesses to conduct routine operations or expand, and adversely affecting consumers seeking financing for mortgages, cars and student loans. Some state governments have also experienced difficulty borrowing money.

The House vote marked a sharp change from Monday, when an earlier measure was sent down to defeat, largely at the hands of angry conservative Republicans.

On Friday, 91 Republicans joined 172 Democrats to support the bill, while 108 Republicans and 68 Democrats opposed it. Twenty-five Republicans and 33 Democrats switched their votes from “no” to “yes.” One Democrat who supported Monday’s version, Rep. Jim McDermott of Washington, opposed the bill Friday. One Republican who didn’t vote Monday, Rep. Jerry Weller of Illinois, voted “yes” on Friday.

Several of the Democrats who switched were members of the Congressional Black Caucus who said presidential candidate Barack Obama had pledged to support legislation easing the burden on consumers if he wins the White House.

Republican presidential candidate John McCain also lobbied for the measure, according to aides who declined to release a list of lawmakers he called.

Following Monday’s vote, Senate leaders quickly took custody of the measure, adding on $110 billion in tax and spending provisions designed to attract additional support, then grafting on legislation mandating broader mental health coverage in the insurance industry. The revised measure won Senate approval Wednesday night, 74-25, setting up a furious round of lobbying in the House as the administration, congressional leaders, the major party presidential candidates and outside groups joined forces behind the measure.

In addition, the measure was changed to broaden the federal government’s deposit insurance program, and the Securities and Exchange Commission loosened a regulation to ease the impact of the distressed assets on the balance sheet of financial institutions.

Despite occasionally strong criticism of the added spending and tax measures, the maneuvers worked — augmented by a sudden switch in public opinion that occurred after the stock market took its largest-ever one-day dive on Monday.

“No matter what we do or what we pass, there are still tough times out there. People are mad — I’m mad,” said Republican Rep. J. Gresham Barrett of South Carolina, who opposed the measure the first time it came to a vote. Now, he said, “We have to act. We have to act now.”

Rep. John Lewis, D-Ga., another convert, said, “I have decided that the cost of doing nothing is greater than the cost of doing something.”

    Critics were unrelenting.

“How can we have capitalism on the way up and socialism on the way down,” said Rep. Jeb Hensarling of Texas, a leader among conservative Republicans who oppose the central thrust of the legislation — an unprecedented federal intervention into the private capital markets.

It was little more than two weeks ago that Paulson and Bernanke concluded that the economy was in such danger that a massive government intervention in the private markets was essential.

White the main thrust of their initial proposal was unchanged, lawmakers insisting on greater congressional supervision over the $700 billion, measures to protect taxpayers and steps to crack down on so-called “golden parachutes” that go to corporate executives whose companies fail.

Earlier in the week, the legislation was altered to expand the federal insurance program for individual bank deposits, and the Securities and Exchange Commission took steps to ease the impact of the questionable mortgage-backed securities on financial institutions.

In the moments before the vote, Rep. Barney Frank, D-Mass., chairman of the House Financial Services Committee, pledged “serious surgery” next year to address the underlying causes of the crisis.

If anything, the economic news added to the sense of urgency.

The Labor Department said initial claims for jobless benefits had increased last week to the highest level since the gloomy days after the 2001 terror attacks. The news of the payroll cuts came on top of Thursday’s Commerce Department report that factory orders in August plunged by 4 percent.

Typifying arguments the problem no longer is just a Wall Street issue but also one for Main Street, lawmakers from California and Florida said their state governments were beginning to experience trouble borrowing funds for their own operations.

Pelosi said, “We must win it for Mr. and Mrs. Jones on Main Street.”

One month before Election Day, the drama unfolded in an intensely political atmosphere.

Members of the Congressional Black Caucus credited Obama with changing their minds.

Reps. Elijah Cummings and Donna Edwards, both Maryland Democrats, were among them. They said Obama had pledged if he wins the White House that he would help homeowners facing foreclosure on their mortgages. He also pledged to support changes in the bankruptcy law to make it less burdensome on consumers.

Obama’s rival, Republican Sen. McCain, announced a brief suspension in his campaign more than a week ago to try and help solve the financial crisis.

Republican Rep. Sue Myrick of North Carolina, who switched her vote to favor the measure, said, “I may lose this race over this vote, but that’s OK with me. This is the right vote for the country.”

Myrick said she hadn’t heard from McCain as she made up her mind about how to vote. “They told me he was going to call me. He didn’t,” she said.

The vote on Monday had staggered the congressional leadership and contributed to the largest one-day stock market drop in history, 778 points as measured by the Dow Jones Industrials.

The second is about people at a retirement home that get turned into kids, then decide they don’t want to be kids and get turned back. Not scary at all. Third, the story of a kid who uses his cartoon-inspired powers to enslave his family. Scarier than you’d expect. And finally, the tale of a passenger on a plane who sees a monster on the plane’s wing. About as scary as the third one. The best part, though, is this short little video at the beginning, which is similar to Internet “screamer” videos in that it will make you scream and then laugh. “Wanna see something REALLY scary?”

  202. Has anyone seen “The Bad Seed”? It came out in the 1950s and is monster-free — but scary, indeed.

A TV show that creeped me out when I was a kid was an episode of the original “Twilight Zone” called “The Jar,” based on a short story by Ray Bradbury.

ok–one of the kids on the floor–presumably one of the ones on the “social committee” has posted a flyer on everyone’s door. Supposedly the “whole floor” is going to this haunted house attraction in the area (complete with a haunted corn maze). It will be a Wednesday night (which is just plain crappy), and I was trying to decide whether I should go or not–it costs $20. Actually, the main reason I’m hesitant, is I scare really, really easily. I mean, the dinky little haunted house thing they have at the fair back home scares the crap out of me everytime I’ve ever gone through it (twice–once when I was little, once when I was either preteen/early teen). And then when I was in Scotland, we went to Edinborough Dungeon (which, looking back wasn’t precisely scary) and I was absolutely terrified (I was 11). when I was 12 or maybe 13 I was at a Ripley’s believe-it-or-not/wax museum–and *shocker* I was scared to death……and it wasn’t even scary.

So, basically, yeah, the mere thought of a haunted house practically scares me, and I just dunno if I should go. I mean, part of me wants to, and part of me is like, “Michelle, you are a freakin’ CHICKEN! Why would you want to go to a HAUNTED HOUSE!” Yeah.

189~ Sounds like something we’d do. Like when we wrapped up Muffy’s little brother in a mattress pad (it was white), stuck him on the bed, put the Egyptian King Tut mask from M’s room on his face and then filmed it. (Just a disclaimer- he wanted to do it, and was the reason we made the film, he wanted to do a “mummy coming back to life” bit. ‘Twas interesting.)

I’m tired. Very tired. But I’m happy–I finally got to practice. Of course, since it’s been ages and ages, I’m now totally wiped out. People never think about it, but playing an instrument is work. *SPOILER sept 30 HOUSE SPOILER*

When we finally got to the spot where they cracked what the illness was, and Chase was getting ready to operate, and they said he needed to remove a bezoar, and they continued with the explanation, [speaking of which, why do we need an explanation? Surely everyone has read Harry Potter] all that was running through my head was, “A stone, taken fromthe stomach of a goat, and thought to be a cure for most poisons.” As well as, “I thought a bezoar was only found in ruminants, such as goats, not people…..” Oh, just looked it up in my dictionary again….Guess it just says “a small stony concretion that may form in the stomachs of certain animals, esp. ruminants, and which was once used as an antidote for various ailments.” So not just ruminants, just usually ruminants. And I don’t think this guys bezoar was doing him much good as an antidote!

Anyways, yeah, I just thought that was rather funny….especially my actually knowing what the mysterious illness was without an explanation…..

    Here, you don’t NEED insurence!

And now I am royally pissed off–the campus has tens of thousands of students, not to mention the public is invited to all these events. not to mention it was a dinner theatre, so I didn’t have any dinner. So now I have nothing to do all evening, the cafeteria’s are closed (not that there’s anything worthwhile to eat there–the food is total ****) so I’m stuck with snack food (which I am sick of), and I am horribly overheated, which just adds to my irritation. I mean, the humidity is so bad, that walking across campus–after dark!–when the temp is probably in the 60s, that it gets you really hot and sweaty, and then the sweat doesn’t even evaporate because of all the humidity, so you are all sticky! humidity is a total *****!

I finally got around to throwing out the rest of the half gallon plastic jug of milk (that I hsoudl have thrown out a couple or more weeks ago)……It’s probaby a good thing I finally did, cuz I think the pressure built up in it probably would have burst the lid off pretty soon–the jug was bulging out in all dimensions……And when I poured it down the sink in the bathroom, well, it was fully of chunks. Lots of chunks. I think Panda would’ve like it…. Well, I know what I’m not buying at Walmart when my roomie and I go today…..

I will get a pumpkin if they have a good one, even though everybody thinks I’m crazy for considering buying a pumpking at a grocery store….”everybody” here supposedly gets them at pumpking stands. which is all fine and good, but I’m not going to surf the web/drive all over looking for one. And even if I’ve never bought a pumpking at Walmart, I’ve always gotten my pumpkin from a grocery store, as taht’s the only place to buy in AK…..Pretty much the only people who grow pumpkins there, are the people who are growing the giant ones for the giant veggie competition at the fair…..

On a different note–my geography teacher lied to us yesterday in lecture. He told us (and I’m sure I didn’t misunderstand due to his very strong Chinese accent) that “California has the most earthquakes of all the US”. I didn’t argue with him in class, because I wasn’t entirely sure, but I researched it later, and have proven myself right, my geog teacher wrong. Alaska has the most earthquakes of all the US. Actually, I’ve taken his lack of any mention of Alaska rather personally. He talks about CA and quakes, he talks about China and quakes, but he doesn’t talk about AK and quakes, which according to the legitimate seeming website my sister found: earthquake. usgs. gov/ regional/ states/ top_states. php

has more than half (half!) the earthquakes in the entire bloody US of A! So, yeah, totally CA has the most earthquakes. Nuh-uh, I don’t think so. I feel very slighted that he never, ever mentions AK, and babbles instead about CA, or more often, China (which form the map he showed of earthquake hotspots, barely had any red dots, when souther AK was so thick with red dots, it was just red).

So, on Monday, when we start on earthquakes (last week was plate tectonics), I am going to raise my hand at the beginning of class, and say, “On Friday, you said that CA has the most earthquakes in the US, right? Well, that’s actually not true. AK has the most earthquakes in the US, ‘accounting for more than 50 percent of all US earthquakes.’ Not to mention, the largest earthquake in the US also occurred in AK–the 1964 earthquake, which was a 9.2”

Yeah. He irritates me. I’m taking the whole abscence of talk about AK personally.

And he knows my name, which is creepy. I went to his office yesterday to look over my test, to see what I got wrong. So I walk in, and say, “I was wondering if I could look over my test to see what I got wrong.”

I didn’t introduce myself. I have never even handed anythign directly to him that has my name on it. I have never had my name and my face linked in his presence.

him: “you think you did bad? Because I think you do good.”

me: “No, I don’t think I did bad, I just kinda wanted to see waht I got wrong.”

    him: “you got 89, right?”

me: “yeah, I got 89” [thinking, woah, he knows my name, he knows my grade, wtf?]

him [as I’m looking over the test]: “I almost give you 90, but then I think, no, I gave you all the makeup [he allowed us to take the multiple choice part open book, which he averaged with the mc part on the test. I did worse open book, ], and 89 is 89 [he didn’t count the makeup, since I did worse], so i not give you A”

me: doesn’t say anything, just is wondering why the hell he has to tell me that he almost gave me an A, when he didn’t

him: “I think you doing good–you one of top five in class.”

me (thinking): I care, why? There are at max 30 people in the class–I don’t see how being in the top five is that big of an accomplishment…..

him (as I’m getting ready to leave): “You biology major, right? ”

me (thinking: how the heck does he know my name, my grade, and now my *&^^%%$ing major?”): “Yeah, biological sceinces.”

    him: “Why you choose geography?”

me (honestly): “I ahve to have a certain number of social science credits, an well, geography looked mroe interesting than the others I had to choose from.”

him: *looks put-out [what the heck did he expect me to say?] “But I no speak English well.”

me: [flat out lying] “That’s ok….. [what the heck was I supposed to say?!?!?!]

Anyways, I just was kind of taken aback by the way he knew my name by my face, and then also knew my grade, and my major….what was really odd, was I was wearing my AK grown sweatshirt, and he never once asked me why [insert name of school]?”

    I dunno…..

Oooo, also I met somebody from AK yesterday! In my bio lecture!

So, I was wearing my AK Grown sweatshirt yesterday morning at Bio, and as I was leaving, this one guy asks me, “Are you from Alaska?” And you know, I’m expecting the whole spiel, wondering what whacky questions I’ll get asked this time. So I say, “yes.” And he holds his hand up for a high five and he’s like, “me, too!” So he asks where at in Alaska, so I tell him —–[town where I live], and then he tells me he’s from—–[a town 20-30 minutes away, depending on traffic]….It was rather funny.

Good evening! How do you do?

Lovely Pumpkin, if I do say so, and I do. I love pumpkins.

I love October. I love Fall. I love Halloween-but not the commercial part of it, or the totally creepy/scary/gross parts that all too often get mixed in. I like the season, and October, and Pumpkins, and the way the air smells and feels, and the sense of the Earth going to sleep for the Winter.

There. That sums it up, doesn’t it? :D

*Dishes out pumpkin pies all around* *Leaves*

    Sorry about that, here’s a rake! ;)

5:43: Oops. Didn’t keep you posted. Oh, well. The party was really fun. My cello teacher came!

I was at L.’s house today. We played lots of games.
    MORE BIRTHDAY WISHES
    -Tuner
    -Rockstop
    -Blasterball
Ugh! Dad almost walked into me when I was changing in my room! He stayed and bothered me–as if I wasn’t annoyed enough then!
Today’s completely unrelated statement: L.’s sister S. cried over a broken umbrella at the West football game.
    -It’s just an umbrella!
    Kyra

This is pretty much self-explanitory. The tuner and rockstop were things that I actually needed, and Blasterball was a computer game. I got over my obsession with it before my birthday, luckily.
