  1. YodaShmoda says:

We need a Starwars thread. Or a Indiana Jones thread. Or an old movies thread. Wait… there is a movie thread isn’t there? Oh boo.
Then we need a “I need help with my electronics!” thread. Can anyone tell me what to do with a frozen iPod? I left my iPod in the car and only got it out a few minutes ago and now it won’t turn on! Anyways another good reason for haveing a “Help! My iPod turned green!” thread is so that people like me can get uh… help. And people who know how to do this stuff can show their vast knowladge.

  2. We rarely devote threads to anythings as specific as Star Wars, but we could be cajoled into creating, say, a Science-Fiction thread.

could we possibly have a JJ Abrams & Co thread? incorporating, LOST, Alias, Cloverfield, Fringe, Felicity, etc.

if not, how about another computers & video games thread? when was the last one again?

whoa my idea was used. Thanks!
What if instead of other people philociphy we talked about our own. i mean isn’t philocify just rules that people live by? sorry my shift key just about broke down. Another reason for the Technology thread. *leaves for science fiction thread*

I think my power will be shapeshifting into a cat. Not only do I love cats, but this gives me a chance to use my Warriors RPG character. I also show catlike behaviors when not in morph, like hissing at threatening things and squeezing my eyes shut when I’m happy. This tends to make people who don’t know about my power somewhat afraid of me. I haven’t thought of a name yet, though.

    Name: Klutz Girl!
Powers: Tripping over things and thereby setting a booby trap, falling onto villians, kicking, slapping, being able to test traps by walking into them, and card tricks.
Weaknesses: Gymnastics, running, football, soccer, basketball, and other things that require coordination.
Costume: I’ll draw one and send it in.

    Pie 0
    Squid 0
  31. Axa says:

the search function is lacking, but i believe that’s due to the fact that wordpress accounts are generally not used as “forum” type pages. to the outside MB is an odd blog with very short posts and VERY lengthy and frequent comments. which can’t be indexed very well, I think?

my suggestion is a museum and historical sites thread! places MBers have been or want to visit. I think between all of us many major sites have been visited, but I’m curious to see which.

  32. (29-31) We do have a “search everything” plug-in, which has now been reactivated. It’s rather cumbersome when one is actually searching only for threads, so we disable it from time to time. I probably forgot to turn it back on.

Could we have a si fi thread ? Someone mentioned it on the last thread, and kiwi brought the subject up on this months thread…
    Here’s my idea:
All the bloggers would be on a big starship, the TGS Museica. No-one would have special powers or be morphed into cat/dog/thing. There would be no HPBs either. We just cruise around and explore the star system around MB, saying hi to the inhabitants of various planets (yes, this all sounds very familiar. Just ignore that).

45- Just doesn’t have the same ring. Plus, all of our paraphernalia MB store merchandise would be made incorrect.

42- Do we have to? The Chocolate/Vanilla pie wars became so disorganized they had to be shut down. Besides, pie wars just attract PoPos, ‘phytes, and extravagant competition. But, if that’s the sort of thing you’re into, I guess I can’t let my personal inhibitions get in the way of progress. Perhaps ZEMTEE was better than “No, THIS Is Pie War”, etc. Maybe MB can handle them again.

56-We had about a month to plan for the Winter thing. Today’s the 8th, and St. Patrick’s Day is the 17th… so if we started today, we’d have a month-and-nine-days to plan.
Maybe not just a St. Patrick’s Day. You can’t really have a whole ball on one day. We could spread it out over March and a little into April?

    • soccer starr says:

I think we should definitely have one ball in the summer…I mean, I know that the blog’s a little slower now with people on vacation, camp, and such, but it would be fun to have one just to liven things up a bit. I would definitely vote for a Summer Madness one if the GAPA’s consider it. (Although it would be a little too late to plan one now…perhaps next summer then?) And I agree, the more balls, the better, but not too many. That would probably make them less fun if they happened all the time. Although I’m not really sure, considering I’ve never been to one. (I came right at the end of this year’s May Day Ball but never got a chance to post on the thread…)

  63. Piggy says:

63- In what pie wars did you even participate? I haven’t done ZEMTEE or anything. Was that even a Pie War? Perhaps it was good. My only experience was the Chocolate/Vanilla wars, which became far too disorganised for my tastes. Two different threads because even the GAPAs were divided. That, and people were beginning to make up, “Oh, this defeats everyone on the other side no matter what” weapons, followed by, “It didn’t get me!” “Yes it did!” “No it didn’t!” (etc.) Rant, rant, rant…

Spring: Muse Academy May Day Ball
    Time Span: the usual
    Atmosphere/Theme: Old-Fashioned Ball (not masked)
    Dress: Edwardian/Victorian
Music: classical; live orchestra which is mostly Wungs, but has RPed human instrumentalists as well

Summer: Muse Academy School Dance (can have different themes every year; it would say something like “Muse Academy School Dance” for the title of the thread, and then the subtitle would be “The theme this year is Club,” or whatever the theme is).
    Time Span: Mid-July- Early August
Atmosphere/Theme: could change every year; or we could just always keep it at Dance Club
Dress: Casual; whatever you would wear to a middle/high school dance, a club, or a dance party
Music: Modern, DJ RPed by whoever wants to do it or a wung if no one wants to

    Fall: Muse Academy Halloween Ball
    Time Span: the usual
    Atmosphere/Theme: Halloween
Dress: Costumed and under alter-ego “masks”
Music: Mostly Halloween themed or scary, but can also be normal songs of any sort mixed in (same as this year)

    Winter: Muse Academy Holiday Party
Time Span: Dec. 1-Jan. 2nd or somewhere around there
Atmosphere/Theme: Something wintery; we could do something different this year
Dress: Semi-formal; whatever you’d wear to a holiday party
    Music: holiday
(And of course, a gift exchange.)

I want the romantic musical comedy! But we might have to make some aspects of the plot outside the actual RP’ing so it doesn’t get confusing or anyone gets offended because their character is being rejected by another character… ya know.
Okay, here’s my idea. What about an Alternate History thread? I think it would be a sort of RRR/actual discussion of history. Or maybe more like a collaborative project.
The idea behind it is that everyone is creating together an alternative version of history, starting from the beginning when homo sapiens sapiens first becomes a (relatively) intelligent species in Africa. Then we can make random decisions that are different from the way it worked out really– like a different tribe, more warlike, invents the wheel. Or Siddharta Guatama (aka Buddha) preaches that we should all hold onto our material possessions…

Here’s something I’ve always wanted to do: one day, a guy named Abraham announces that he has received a message from a single God. He is immediately made pharaoh, and replaces the Egyptian pantheon with his monotheism, kind of like Akhenaten. Which means that, since Egypt is the dominating culture because of the wheel, monotheism spreads MUCH earlier than with the Roman Empire’s conversion to Christianity.

Dearest GAPAs, I have a request. According to the calendar on “the Harry Potter Encyclopedia”, which is a very cool site I discovered today, March 7 is the day that Dobby died. Can we have a thread in honour of poor Dobby’s death? We do, afterall, have threads for fictional characters birthdays, so this isn’t much different…….Please? Y’know, it always broke my heart, how in CoS, Harry made Dobby promise never to try to save his life again, and then in DH, poor Dobby becomes a hero saving Harry’s life, and is rewarded by being murdered by that b****, Lestrange…….I cried for Dobby.

HERE LIES DOBBY, A FREE ELF

“Thank you so much Dobby, for rescuing me from that cellar. It’s so unfair that you had to die when you were so good and brave. I’ll always remember what you did for us. I hope you’re happy now.”

120–I wouldn’t say it was the saddest……I cried much harder when we watched Snape’s memories and my Horcrux theory was confirmed. I was truly bawling then.

Hedwig: a couple tears–I could empathize with Harry so well
    Dobby
    Fred, a little
Snape: I cried a bit, even though my theory was still in doubt, it was obvious that even if I was wrong (which I wasn’t) that he at the very least swqitched sides at the very end.
Colin, Remus, Tonks, Hagrid (when the spiders took ‘im), I forget the order, but even those we learned about after Harry’s fate, even though i was still sobbing for Harry, some of them were for these as well. (I cried for Harry fromt he moment we learned he ahd to die to the moment he was AKed, the end of that chapter, at which point I had to run to the bathroom to wipe away the snot that was pouring from my nose–hey, I know it’s gross, but htat’s what happens when one cries, so there!)

The first person to give the muse-baller a question they can’t answer trades the answer for the museball. RPG = Role-Playing Game. People narrate stories from their own character’s point of view. Ex. Ships’ Logs, Bunny Apocalypse, Flavor Pie Wars.
RRR = Round Robin wRiting. People take turns writing a novel from the POV of one or two collective characters. Ex. Terraformed, Etheterre, The Sea Roc.
RPW = Role-Playing Writing. Everyone has their own individual character and they all write letters to other people’s characters. Ex. The Empowered.

Well, I finally remembered/began work on my t-shirt idea (see post 179 and following). Unfortunately, my software doesn’t have Arial Black as a font choice, which, as far as I can tell, is the font in the original t-shirt. Right now I’ve got Arial Unicode MS, bolded. It’s pretty close, and I think it looks good. But I think we need more than just the GAPAs’ names on it. What should be on the back? Should there be anything on the back? Should the URL be on the front? Ideas, people. Those are what I need.
Space Queen- When I email the finished files to you, what format do you want them in? Do you want them in PSD files so you can fiddle with the font/colours/spacing? Or would GIF or something be better?
That brings up another question. What colour should they be? White text on a black background for sure, but should there be other choices?

    Pie 0
    Squid 0
    • PSD should be fine if the file isn’t too large for an email attachment. Otherwise GIF or PNG probably, since this is all lettering. JPG makes the edges fuzzy.

      Pie 0
      Squid 0
      • Piggy says:

Yeah, I never got that about jpegs. The front of the shirt is only 783 kilobytes in PSD, so I don’t think size will be an issue.

        Pie 0
        Squid 0
        • JPEGs have an advantage for continuous tones, as in photographs or gradients or anything that uses smooth, nuanced shifts in color, but for that very reason the format pays a price in sharpness.

          Pie 0
          Squid 0
          • Jadestone says:

I know this isn’t exactly the place for it but does moving jpegs around make them lose resolution? Whenever I move my photography from iPhoto where I edit it to the desktop it seems to grow less sharp/clear, and for some things it’s barely noticeable but for photos that already are borderline fuzzy it really detracts from them.

            Pie 0
            Squid 0
            • I don’t know enough about the specific equipment and software you’re using to say for sure. It may also be something about the way the desktop configures the picture. In other words, it may just be an apparent difference, not a real one.

JPEGs use a “lossy” compression — that means it loses data every time it reconfigures, basically each time you edit and save a file. It’s like our memories, rebuilding the scene anew each time, losing some pixels here, shifting some pixels there.

The changes are so subtle that most of the time our eyes can’t pick up the difference on the low resolution of a computer screen — but they can present nasty surprises in print. That’s why, if you’re going to do some real editing, convert your photos to a TIFF or some proprietary format (such as Photoshop’s PSD) that accounts for every pixel. If you need to have the final format in JPEG, make the conversion the very last step.

              Pie 0
              Squid 0
              • Jadestone says:

Okay, thank you. I just don’t like using PSD so much because every time I want to look at a picture it opens photoshop and that takes *forever* to open. I’ll maybe try TIFFs though I think I tried it before and it did the same thing. Maybe it’s iPhoto…

                Pie 0
                Squid 0
                • I understand what you mean. Although some other programs can open PSDs. TIFFs can be reeaaaalllllyyyyy ssslloooowwww. Nature of the beast, unless you have a very fast processor. That’s why I leave Photoshop open most of the time. I think Photoshop now has a free site with basic picture editing. You might try to track that down and see what it has to offer. I desperately need to be unconscious for awhile, so I can’t stop to look it up right now.

    Two ideas, GAPAs:
    1. We do have this lovely Suggestion Box, where we
“Tell the GAPAs what to do
‘Cause they clearly have no clue”
as you said back in MA. But what about a thread to, I don’t know how to say this without seeming suckupish, tell the GAPAs what they’re doing right? In past months I have learned the value of complementing people and making them feel good about themselves at every possible opportunity, especially as I have a naturally insulting and annoying personality.
    2. Another RPW would be nice, but of a simpler type than the ones we have now. I just read Sorcery and Cecelia, you see, and was fascinated by the idea of the “letter game” that Patricia Wrede and Caroline Stevermer played. As I have no writer friends, or even acquaintances, what about a simple RPW where the first person sets the scene and a few characters, and we can just add on? No external discussion of plot. No confusion. Only a few people would make it work best, though of course everyone is welcome to join. Maybe some of the characters can contact each other without writing letters, so we can just write “So-and-so says…” and “Bob told me to tell you…” And I don’t think the plot should be that complicated either.
Either? Both? Maybe? Help? In your infinite wisdom and mercy? (Okay, now I am being a suckup. But this is the appropriate time to be a suckup, so I’ve got an excuse.)

Creative writing has always interested me, but I never really got a chance to pursue it. I’ve always wanted to participate in an RRR, but the plots were too complex, the background knowledge necessary too obcure, and the style of writing too difficult for me to emulate.

I think it would be nice if we could have an RRR for people with little or no creative writing experience. We would want a simple, outlined ahead of time plot. It would also be nice if there were more experienced writers who could keep an eye on the RRR, provide feedback on the writing, and write a little to get the story going in the right direction if needed.

I was reading Thud! the other day, by Terry Pratchett, and wondered if it would be possible to play the game Thud on MuseBlog? Here are the rules as I understand them:
    1. It is played between 32 dwarf pieces and 8 troll pieces.
    2. Dwarfs can move as far as they want in any direction. (Like queens.)
    3. Trolls can move one space in any direction. (Like kings.)
    4. The board is shaped like an octagon, with a rock in the middle that no one can jump over.
    5. The trolls are placed around the center, and the dwarfs are placed around the edges.
    6. You take pieces the same way you do in chess.
6a. Except you can take multiple pieces at a time, like in checkers.
    7. Apparently the dwarfs don’t always win.

Although I have never been to one, I have read through some of the past ball threads and so I know that they are basically virtual parties that take place (duh!) on the site through (sometimes) multiple threads. Often they have themes, (such as the masked Halloween Ball) and sometimes, it seems, that they are more just like regular dances. Sometimes the girls reveal what dresses they are wearing through pictures, or by just describing them in detail. Overall, they do seem like a lot of fun.

  276. RoseQuartz says:

For the magic RPG, would it help if we had a specific plot idea and/or rules?

    Plot:
The Faerie world is spilling over onto Earth, and a handful of humans are beginning to discover their magical powers. Magic has existed on Earth all along, but most people didn’t know where to look for it. Now the beings from Faerie are enlisting these magical humans to fight in their war–a classic Good vs. Evil. Each side is trying to get to as many humans as possible.

    Rules:
-Each character gets a maximum of two powers and two only. One should be considerably smaller than the other.
-If human, they can either know or not know of their powers at the beginning of the RPG, but they can’t conveniently discover a new power just in time to get themselves out of something.
-If they have a magic sword or other weapon, they can only have one power.
-NO anime/manga style characters, unless they’re in Faerie, and then only a couple. We’ve already got a ton of anime/manga characters in SF.
-No characters with higher than a 30 on the Mary Sue litmus test. No cheating out of this. If they got higher than a 30, you can rework them and still stay in the RPG.
-Faerie characters can look however you want them to as long as they’re below a 30. Human characters should be relatively normal looking, although they can look slightly odd when they’re using their power–silver eyes, a glow, etc. If they’re half-human and half-Faerie, you’re pushing it. Stay below a 30.

    Is this reasonable?

Similar to the Ensemble RRRs, it would be a *role-playing game involving 4 to 6 characters. (I would propose this on the “Paleophyte” suggestion box, but I can’t find it. Should have bookmarked it…) This might solve the problem of excessive characters and rapid action that some people have complained about.

  283. Errata says:

Alright, I have two ideas for RPGs that have been bouncing around in my head for a while. (Actually, they’ve been bouncing around in text files on my computer, but whatever.) Here they are.

This first one was thought up more recently.

    Basic Plot:
Aliens from across the universe send some of their number to earth, collecting information, to send back to their planets.

    Complex Background:
Centuries ago, the denizens of the planet Melthos invented a way to move quickly through space. They used their knowledge to begin to explore the universe, sharing their technology. However, although the Melthosians were peaceful, the other planets were not so much so. After many horrible wars involving the technologies of tens of planets, the Melthosians gathered representatives from all the planets, and formed the InterPlanetary Federation. Thousands of planets were discovered, and all sent representatives to the Federation. Finally, they happened upon another planet. Something told them this one was different. After a meeting of the Federation, they decided against contact. However, several of them secretly sent off spies, disguised as humans, to find more about this strange race. The first thing they discovered was the strange name of the planet. Earth…

This one was made up more then a year ago, for Neopets roleplayers, which are, needless to say, quite different from MBers. I never posted it, and it probably needs quite a bit of refinement.

    Setting:
The kingdom of Celestia. There are four cities, plus one in ruins. They are arranged in a circle/square thing, with the biggest one in the center. The ones around it represent Art, Knowledge, and War. The fifth one was destroyed long ago, and no one knows what it once represented. However, these do not concern us right now. Our story takes place in the main one, which has residents from all the other cities. It has all sorts of things in it, with all the other cities combined in one. Everywhere you look you can see warriors practicing, artists doing art, and scholars learning. There’s even a few people from the forgotten fifth city. But not even they know anything about it.
