International Month of Futures Past

In 1958 when Ward Kimball produced “Magic Highway, U.S.A.” for Disneyland, the vision of the future looked a lot like…1958. Aesthetically speaking, that is. Much of the technology still waits to be invented. This month’s Random threads celebrate how imaginations of the past portrayed the future, but in the present, of course, you may be as random as you like.

Anyway, sweet picture!!!!!! Don’t have much to say, except I’m dreadfully tired, got less than 5 hrs of sleep. And tomorrow night I have to meet with my chem lab partner to work on our poster presentation for lab, and he isn’t available inthe morning, because he has to “work out” (can’t he skip that??????) and thenhe works until 11 pm. Which means a very late night tomorrow, if we’re ot even getting started until 11.

My science teacher often has people steal her staplers. I made a sign for her that said-
If you steal this stapler, we will hunt you down. We know where you live.

And I actually used that graphic.
She made me change it to-
Please don’t steal this stapler. other people need it and this is where it belongs. Remember. we know where you live.

Not one stapler was stolen since. (heh, heh)

Speaking of signs. I’m running for Student council. so I took some Obama posters and changed them a little. As in, put One School instead of One Nation. The elections is (or was for some people) today.

Ok, question. I had copied the first of the two Bo’s Facts page from the April mag to give to my bioethics teacher, as they pertained to current/recent topics of conversation. That is, the so-called sea-kittens and the eyelash lengthener. Of course, that page also had the false fact.

I had scribbled a note next to the false fact saying that it was a customary false fact. Apparently he missed that, as he said in an email thinking me for the excerpt: “I didn’t even think of the possible adaptation of “hyperallergenic” trees in response to deforestation–it may not be the likely explanation, but it was intriguing!”

so, of course, I sent him a polite email to disabuse him of the notion that that fact was false. So I got an email in return, ending with the question: “I wonder: Why would they mix in a fake story with more factually true ones?”

I am sending him an email in reply, and wanted to know if the following sounded like a reasonable explanation for one of our many bizarre [to outsiders] Muse traditions/quirks. A quick (GAPA, perhaps) response would be nice, I like to be prompt with my replies. The false fact is a tradition. The random facts segment was added to the magazine several years ago, and since its beginning, one false fact has always been included amongst the actual facts. It’s something of a game for the readers to try to guess which fact is false and the answer is given upside down at the bottom of the second page of facts.

I’ve found my fathers old collection of sci-fi books and am enjoying them, though laughing my head off at their thoughts of the future.

Randomness:
Tomorrow is my dance studios premiere of “Once upon a dream”. I’m a hedge in act 2 & 3, and dancing onstage is scary. Very scary. I got lost in the theatre and the poor coordinator/person in charge of finding all the dancers under 16 and getting them onstage in time had already told everyone that there was “an errant hedge with funky earrings” running around and that they should point me towards the stage an tell me I was on in 5 min, since I didn’t know the hedge was also on in act two and only bothered to show up for act threeâ€¦ And we’re a leper hedge-somebody lost moss onstage, and most of my costume is strewn over the studio. I’ve superglued just about everything left, so it should holdâ€¦

About the makeup- no comment. Every second word would involve desserts and it’s a waste of breath.

Tomorrow at this time I’ll be onstageâ€¦ *is scared*

Happy May Day, everyone! I simply cannot believe it’s May already. My birthday month as well, *shudders* 17. I can’t believe it, I think I’m about ready to turn 12 now.

Ah well. Tomorrow is “A Day in Snipsnip” (local-ish town, thus snippage) and I’m going to be playing music all day. And possibly for the dinner hour as well, if I can get ahold of Mrs. P and ask her some questions. I’d better go do that now, actually.

I LOVE 50’s-60’s retrofuturism! (And also 80’s “space shuttle chic”, to a lesser extent.) It’s the sort of feel I was going for in that “Days of Future Never” story I abandoned.

And the video did get some things right- moving sidewalks (In airports, not malls, though), cars that turn into boats (They’re expensive, but they DO exist.), an in-car computer showing your position (Magellan GPS!), solar-powered cars (Mostly only as concept cars, but one crossed Australia in the 80s.) and faster transportation and communication encouraging globalization.

A lot of stuff is right there, too. Elon Musk’s company SpaceX even has a launch site on a tropical island.

The video provides a fascinating peek at the dreams for the future as imagined in the late 1950s — even more interesting if you’ve seen Wall-E and compare. I’d love to hear comments from anyone who watches it.

The whole notion that highways are the answer to everything is also embedded in the outlook of the time, merely two years after the Federal-Aid Highway Act that brought us the interstate system. Highways on the side of the Grand Canyon? Zipping by the Sphinx? Hard to believe now anyone once saw that as desirable.

Did you see Wall-E? I kept thinking that the life the video finds so enchanting — you never have to walk a step, everything either comes to you or conveys you thither — is very much the world that the humans in the movie achieve, then find reason to regret.

Wall-E was a GREAT movie. I can’t believe that people wanted that. It seems the more people create technology for comfort, the more they regret it. Look at SUVs. People loved them, but now many hate them, because of rising gas prices, pollution, ect.

21- Oh, sorry, misunderstanding. I thought 19 was your post. I have no idea… that’s strange. I don’t see it. My post on the MDB thread didn’t show up on the recent comments bar until, like, ten minutes after it was moderated… But, on the other hand, the GAPAs are moderating something like every thirty seconds, so I suppose things get sacrificed if you have to skim everything. Or something. I’m just making stuff up as I go along, I don’t really know….

Has anyone seen my sock?

Happy Saturday! I’m attending a birthday party/ concert but before that I have to get ready, play tennis for an hour, wash up, go to the mall and buy a birthday present for the birthday person… then I have to buy wrapping paper at this other place… someday I’m going to hunt down the person who invented wrapping paper and murder en. What’s the point? A really cool present might come in a plastic grocery bag, or a pair of socks might come in a silver-embossed foam.

Well, that’s good that it’s just a cold. (Not that I really thought it was anything else, I was just kidding…..) Wasn’t there a case or two in Nebraska, though? Seems like I remember hearing/reading that.

My college keeps sending out emails that so far no cases have been reported here in the area, or on campus, but that if we do come down with it, absolutley do not go to classes or anything. Well, I understand that, and all, but……It’s almost finals. I’m not sure I’d be able to restrain myself from going to class, because if I missed class, I’d permanently screw up my grades…….And yes, I’m afraid that actually might mean more to me then infecting other people. Of course, I’m not sick with anything right now, much less the flu, so I guess it’s sort of a moot point…..

The picture is really cool, and I’m watching the video right now. It’s pretty interesting.
Rewatching Back to the Future does sound like a good idea… I haven’t seen any of them in at least three years. I remember when I saw the second one, I made a whole timeline to figure out all the different times. There’s a big plot hole, but I’ll won’t say it here, because I want to know if anyone else noticed it.

Goodness. This sunday is our chorus concert. It’s going to be aweful. We don’t know any of our songs well at all. No. Scratch that. We know ONE song. Out of all of them! It’s going to be a disaster! And it’s going to be even MORE worse because our teacher taught them to us wrong! We sang with our accompanist today and our teacher apologized to us for teaching us the wrong beat on one of our hardest songs. OMG! The woman doesn’t even know the song herself! Much less us! *scream* And we’re presenting this stuff to the community?! Outrageous! I avert my eyes in horror! *sob*

Onewhisker(on the friends thread)+Silverstream+friend: ???
Me: *attempts to explain*
Onewhisker: Mrs Blank, what’s an apocalypse?
Religion teacher: *explains* Why?
Onewhisker: The MLDM said–
Me: *collapses on desk laughing*

And as if that wasn’t weird enough, I sent Onewhisker and Silverstream a weird bunny-apocalyptic email… I even up yelling across the religion classrom “I don’t know why they have to be hot pink bunnies. Maybe because they’re cuter? Then whole of RiverClan wanted to know what I was on about, and I ended up convincing them that MuseBlog is full of stalkers and Mean Clean Sexy Machines, and I’m evil because my parents (ahem) don’t know about it (they don’t!). To top it all off, Onewhisker told we yesterday (in religion again) she went on MuseBlog and got zombified by an American hpb, and that she called herself hpb.

More weird school-related stuff: We had a boring assembly, with a bunch of Year 12s wheeling in a new recycling bin and telling us about the new recycling program. There were ominous thumping noises, so they opened it, and THE PRINCIPAL emerged. Then she told us she was going to sing a song (about recyclable waste) and she did. We thought it was hillarious, of course. I now have “I love waste…” stuck in my head.

Funny story regarding kitties. There’s an xkcd comic about kitties, number 238, I think. It’s the first link when you google “xkcd kitty.”
At lunch a few days ago, my friends and I were sitting outside and all of a sudden at cat walks by. My friend J saw it and yelled “KITTY! COME HERE KITTY! YOU’RE A CUTE KITTY!” and started running after it.
This is funnier after seeing the comic.

I’M SCARED!!!
Today is my first outside-the-family babysitting job for a little 8-year-old who is the daughter of my dad’s BOSS. So, basically, if I do anything wrong or unpleasing/etc., I’m in big huge mondo trouble. This is why I don’t like babysitting.
And I literally have no idea what to do with her! I’m only watching her for two hours, true, but I have no idea what she wants to do. I’m bad at this kind of stuff.

Ugh. I’m really, really nervous. *shivers*

Yeah. I’m not good with little kids either. Except most of them seem to like me for some reason, which is unnerving, since I’m no where near that enthusiastic about them. But 8 year olds aren’t that bad. It’s the little ones that are the worst. *grimace*

Well, it didn’t go so bad. For two hours, it was actually pretty good. We went to the park. The girl was quite nice, and very smart, so we had a lot to talk about. We also played board games, and I didn’t win ONE single round.

Fifth graders have grad parties? *ponders* Oh, is fifth grade the last year of elementary school in your district? I guess a graduation party would make perfect sense, in that case. Afterall, I had one when I graduated from preschool! (I can still fit into the shirt I got……It was huge on me when I got it in preschool, though.)

Well, I’m almost twelve. I really should have been in sixth grade this year, but I was new to the town so my parents made me attend an extra year of preschool. (It’s very embarrasing…but not as embarrasing as explaining the scar on my forehead.)

Oh! I had a similar experience at that age, although the scar is hidden at by the roots of my hair. You know those christmas stocking holders that you put above your fireplace? Well, on my second christmas, my stocking was on a clay reindeer one, and it wasn’t on the fireplace securely, so I’m all excited and pulling on my stocking, and the entire thing falls down on me, with the antlers making a huge gash in my forehead. I probably still have the scar, but I haven’t checked recently…….I know I still had it last year, uh, about ten years after I got it, so it’s probably still there.

How’d you get it?

I don’t have any scars on my forehead, but I have a very small (invisible unless you’re very close and personal–too personal) scar towards the left of my chin, straight down from the corner of my mouth, where I got bit by a bald eagle. I’d grabbed one in a blanket in its mew, and as I was getting ready to go out the door with it, it got its head out from under the blanket, swiveled its neck around, and bit me. At which point I proceeded to drop it, which my mom has continued to harass me about at various points since……So at that point, somebody else got to go and pick it back up for whatever procedure we were going to do, while I went and scrubbed the wound with dilute betadine…..I was very lucky, in that it wasn’t a very deep bite, or whatever. And that it was my chin, not another portion of my face……

It’s lightning shaped. Dead serious.

I got it when I was about five, and I was at the radio station and there were some other kids. And they’d just put in a wheelchair ramp, or something, and it had a handrail and stuff. Stairs have handrails too, but they’re steeper; this one was very gradual. So were playing around on it, and I was showing off and so I tried to stand on the concrete wall with the handrail between me and the ramp and jump over the handrail, landing safely on the ramp on the other side.
Well, it didn’t work. I couldn’t jump high enough so I tripped on the handrail and fell like three feet or so to land on my face on the very hard concrete ramp with my big plastic heart-shaped necklace in between my forehead and the cement… So it couldn’t take the impact and broke, spilling liquid and little glass hearts all over the place, to mingle with the blood. I seem to recall there being a great deal of blood, but I think my memory’s exaggerating.

I told you it was complicated.

That they do. I remember playing soccer (the last year I did, if I recall correctly) at the summer academy… I went for a ball at the same time as someone else, to head it no less, and me wearing glasses… When we finally washed it off, the cut was no more than a couple millimeters wide and around four long, but my entire face was covered in blood.

I was laughing the entire time because it was so humorous… Come to think of it, that must have been a little weird. Riding down to the first aid tent in a golf cart, blood and tears streaming down my face, laughing my head off… Hey, maybe this is why I got shunned!

Yeah. Some people have told me that I didn’t miss anything, and others have told me it was the best grade ever, but I’m glad I skipped it–I was bored to death in my old grade, and I would’ve continued to be so, which would’ve hurt my grades, I’m sure.

Yeah, I’ve been homeschooled since second grade, as well……I had a graduation party at my house when I graduated from high school, and invited my “friends”( aka, coworkers, as you all are, quite seriously, pretty much my only friends). Hardly anybody showed……

I can’t recall if I had a kindergarten graduation, or not. Probably, but I only remember my preschool one….

55- It’s your decision really, but… please don’t change your name. I hate name changes. I think of you as Syllabub now, and if you changed your name I would never be able to remember who you were. I had the name crisis a while ago too, and I realized after it–your name may not have started out as “you,” but it’s become you over time. Changing your blogname is like changing your real name–you should think about it for a while, not just do it because you don’t like your name at the moment. Armada is not the best name I could think of, but it’s my name, and I’m not going to change it even if I think that it’s not “me” and every neophyte who comes on thinks it means a fleet or warships. (Which it doesn’t, ‘phytes. It’s Portuguese.)
That’s all just me, though. Think about it.

Hmm that last bit wouldn’t surprise me, Japan is very conscious of their environmental impact (except for the whale hunting…how I loathe the whale hunting…) Though I think it must vary depending on the show/comic.
What are some titles that have such devices? A lot of the card/ game type stories are always around cause they are merchandise gold and cause everyone loves a competition (there is seriously a manga for any “theme” you want. Cooking! Tennis! Baking! Hair cutting! Outer space clean up! )
A deep respect for nature or an underlying theme of such is rooted in Japanese culture, since their indigenous religion deals mainly with nature.

I hate being short. I’m fifteen, but I’m only 5’3″-ish, and everyone thinks I’m a lot younger than I am. Until I talk–my voice is unfittingly deep, which shakes people up a bit. Well, it shakes males up; females are usually saying, “Oh, wow, your voice is amazing,” and I just nod and pity myself quietly. I walked into a Radio Shack a few weeks ago, and an employee saw me and said, “Can I help you, little guy?” ARRRRRGH. I mumbled, “Uh, no,” and quickly walked to the back of the store, grabbed the 1/8″ to 1/4″ audio adapter I needed, bought it, and walked out, glaring the whole time.

On an entirely different note, I saw two stormtroopers today. Just driving along when I looked out the window and there they were, full armor, no guns, just standing around outside a store and chatting. They were still there a few hours later when I went by again. Still unarmed–what a disgrace, in my opinion.

I graduated from the senior [piano] virtuoso level at my music conservatory today, first person to do so. Unfortunately, I was having an “off” day, so the Prokofiev I played didn’t go so great, but it wasn’t like they could take it away from me. Has anyone ever had that punch in which you mix lemon-lime pop and lime sherbet? Delicious, in my personal opinion.

I’m still sick, unfortunately. Sore throat, stuffed-up nose, coughing, etc. Still pretty sure it’s not the ~~swine flu~~ H1N1 influenza-A virus, though, so you all need not be afraid.

Well, I think I’ve rambled enough for now.

Even though you’re sure it’s not the flu (and are probably correct), I would suggest going to the doctor just to be sure. Of course, doctor’s don’t know anything (sorry, anybody who is relate to a doctor, but it’s true), and so it would probably be a pointless trip where they attempt to prescribe antibiotics for your cold (which obviously is pointless, as colds are viruses,a nd will not respond to antibiotics, which are for bacteria…..)

gah. I really should be studying for my bioethics final which is next week, or else working on my extra credit history paper, but..;….Like always, I’m procrastinating. Admittedly, my procrastination technique in this case is something I need to do anyway, but still…..Oh, yeah the technique in question: Sorting through my stuff and packing up stuff that’s staying here, and making piles of stuff that’s coming home, so it can all get packed….I’ve taken down some of my decorations (Harry Potter randomness, like Nearly Headless Nick’s song…I think the wordles will be next to go, then my posters, eventually) and the room is starting to look very unhomey. Not that it ever got too homey looking, but….It’s even less so, now. I mean, like I said, this is all stuff I have to get done in the next two weeks, but….So’s studying, and my test comes before the time I leave, or even the time my stuff needs to be packed by (so it can be picked up by the person storing it for me).

I”m rambling, aren’t I?

Oh, hey, Robert. I’ve been meaning to tell you: Y’know how back in December you said you thought I’d like my bioethics class, when I was rambling on about all my apprehensiveness about it, and not being very keen on taking it? Well, I am very happy to say: You were right. I have actually enjoyed it, the teacher is very fun/entertaining, and for a class that’s at 8 AM? It’s incredibly lively and entertaining, and he actually manages to keep us all interested and awake. Which, again, at 8AM is something hard to do…..

(64) Kokonilly: A friend of mine at the Centers for Disease Control tells me she isn’t worried. This strain of flu spreads quickly, but most people recover from it fairly quickly, too. As long as it doesn’t mutate into something more dangerous, we’ll be okay.

(Things might be different in Southern Hemisphere countries that are already in the middle of their flu seasons. If you’re already sick with a different kind of flu and then catch this one on top of it, you’re in real trouble.)

I found an absolutely lovely pair of Campers today, for $40, which seemed like a lot until Mother mentioned that hers cost $200. I’m going to buy these on Monday, or tomorrow if the store is open. I’m super excited.

And I just babysat (so now I can afford the Campers and my haircut…) and I held the guinea pig all through Monty Python and the Holy Grail, and now I miss my small furry mammals. -sniff- Noodle never wants to sleep with me anymore either…

D’you know, I am surprisingly NOT tired. I’ve been up since noon, and I don’t feel at all ready to go to bed. Of course, I need to. And I owuld’ve gone a long time ago, except I had to meet my chem lab partner and work on our special project poster that’s due Tuesday. And he works. Didn’t get off until 11 pm, so since I didn’t wnat to leave it until Monday, we met then. Well, actually we met more like 11:30, and stayed until around 4:30. Five whole hours. five! I have decided against my better judgement not to set my alarm, and sleep until I wake up. Which will probably be at least 3….I hope not, but I wouldn’t be surprised at all.

Graduations)
In Austria, you start middle school after 4th grade, so I had a graduation there. It was sort ofâ€¦ scary for me, since I was going to go to a big confusing school and I would be
a) the first “semi-home-schooled” kid there (I dunno the english term)
b) Not come to the school till january, so everyone else would already be settled in.

The graduation was boring though. I got paperweights and boring, useless stuff. And I was freaking because I realized that I’d have to leave the only school I’d every known and the one I go to now which is very, very intimidating. The school is infamous for taking on classes of 33 students, and whittling the number down over the years until graduating classes have as few as 11 students. Needless to say, no child left behind doesn’t exist here. It’s easy to get into the top schools-staying there is the problem. Which is why skipping a grade is a big deal here.

The dance studio where I take classes always puts on a yearly performance. This one is based on sleeping beauty. But being a hedge isn’t that bad, considering that there is also (dancing) gingerbread and various TV commercials. It’ll probably be on YouTube soon anyway.

I’m getting confirmed today, and when our class goes up to the altar, I’m going to be leading everybody. I just know I’m going to be spacing out during the church service, because I’ll be wishing that my grandma could’ve seen me do this (She died. A month ago.) and also the time that we walk up is in the middle of a song, so I’m probably going to ask my friend to pinch me when we need to ehad up.

My mom’s yelling at me to get something to wear, so I have to go. Needless to say, she is a bit stressed out about having people over to our house after the church service.

Hi Goldendoodle! Good luck today. I was confirmed on April 20th!! You’re lucky you got a Sunday. (we got a Monday and it was all rainy and we had to go to school until noon. it was still fun. ) My mom was on a house-cleaning craze the entire WEEK before (not fun.). the name I chose is Brigid. (It’s kinda weird, it’s always interesting to see what names other people picked. *shrug*) I’m so sorry about your grandma. :’-( I’m sure she’s really proud of you and watching from heaven. anyways… have fun!!

Hello. I do believe I shall bore you all with what I did yesterday, because parts of it were terribly exciting. For me at least.

Well, first of all, my panic was unfounded. We got there before the parade, walked along with some other 18th century folks, and then dispersed to our various stations and demonstrations/performances. Because there were some people I knew (and knew wouldn’t mind my playing) in the F&I camp, I stayed there and played several tunes, then wandered down the street. I went to the children’s games and played some tunes for the people there, wandered to the Civil War camp to “tourist” and played a few tunes for them as well. On my way back I ran across a bluegrass/old-time band and joined them for a rip-stomping rendition of Soldier’s Joy. That was…..fun.
Then I meandered around more, playing music, talking and visiting. Good stuff.

Well, I had been asked to play music for the dinner hour at the banquet, before the main band (a group of shanty singers) came up. Then they said no, not to worry about it….then Mia said she had to do a 20 minute filler between their sets and didn’t know whether she could do that much of singing solo. The town people said they’d let me in free for dinner (and I wanted to go to hear Ship’s Company anyway) if I played a few tunes, so Mia and I ended up doing 6 songs.* I had mic issues, but it went alright. For having stage fright like I do, it’s ridiculous how much fun I had.
When Ship’s Co. came back on they had me join in on the first of their second set…. *excited and slightly terrified squeak* That was grand. I’m so incredibly lucky to be able to play (or sing) along with some really good groups. I practically worship their CD, it’s one of my favorites. You can see why I’d say this was exciting for me? Quite so, in fact.

Anyway, I also saw several friends again, that was nice. I saw Jake and barely recognized him, but it was nice to visit a bit.
Fear the Muffins was going to come, but they ended up getting quite lost (don’t ask me how) and didn’t make it.
But Gareth came! I’d said I’d be there all day, but he replied he was busy with an Eagle Scouts project, so couldn’t come. Thus, when i got a text that he was going to “some song thing tonight” I didn’t even blink when I fired back, “Ok, well have fun I need to go get ready now since I’m playing for a dinner.” 20 minutes later we ran into each other. That was hilarious.

We got back late and I was (am) still singing and dancing (within reason), despite being excruciatingly tired. And I do believe the roaring headache of last night may be returning, but I hope not.

*For those so inclined, we started off with Spanish Ladies, I went into College [Sailor’s] Hornpipe, we did Twiddles (I supplied the knock on the door and gasp during Lucy Jeffer’s verse….in case anyone knows the song), I played the Mason’s Apron, we sang Mingulay and I finished up with Smash the Windows. I couldn’t list all the songs Ship’s Co. did, though. Just some.

Yesterday was pretty sleepy for me, but the weather was amazing and beautiful. It was raining very lightly, but the air was so warm I could walk about in only a sweater. And everything was green and the trees were blooming and I picked a blossom and put it in my hat. I think I like that kind of weather better than sunny and warm…I don’t know why.
In contrast, today looks like it should be absolutely baking, but it’s really cold out. I’m wearing a sweater and long socks, because I pretty much froze when I went out in sandals and short sleeves.

81 – That’s frightening. You must be thoroughly freaked out right now. I hope you and your family all stay healthy! I’ve heard that as long as you don’t have a flu already when you get the swine flu, you’re extremely likely to recover. Back up in post 65, Robert said something similar.
My boyfriend’s cousin had the swine flu, and I think he’s better or recovering right now.

Re:Scars–I have an interesting scar on my cheek, below and slightly to one side of my left eye. It’s checkmark-shaped, and self-inflicted–when we were playing some demented version of volleyball (using a ping-pong ball) in capoeira, I threw the ball past my face, and my thumbnail, which was really long at the time, took a small chunk out of my cheek. The scar’s faded over time (I got it about six months ago), and now you can only see it if you know it’s there and are looking for it. I think it’s cool, nevertheless. My BA:TNG character has the same scar, though she got it somewhat differently and it’s easier to see.
My sister has a big scar right on her hairline, which she got when she was…I forget, four? (She’s eight now.) She was hyperactive and bouncing on our couch, and she jumped off it, miscalculated the distance between the floor and the wall, and hit her head on the molding. The cut went to her skull, and she had to have thirteen stitches in the ER.

I have a scar on my right knee from when I was 3 ? 4 ? I was balancing along a wall and I fell down onto some glass. I hated my scar until I read the first Harry Potter, where Dumbledor tells Harry that he has a scar to. After that, I didn’t mind mine and Dumbledor became my favorite character, beating Hermione.

Ack. I’ve been getting gradually more and more depressed the past couple of days. I think it’s because it’s been over a year now since I last saw my bff/brother that never had, as well as: my bffs younger brother, my second best friend and her two little sisters, my other bf whom I actually don’t even know if she remembers me, as I haven’t seen her for TWO years, as well as about 20 other friends that I also haven’t seen for two years. And here where I live now, I only have about 10-12 friends, whom I usually see about twice-three times a week, but now that my ballet classes are over, I’m having to resort to only virtual friendships with my bff, his brother, my onetime bff and my few friends here that I actually know well enough to exchange emails with. As well as being pen-pals with my second best friend, whom I will call AS, who hasn’t replied to either of my last two letters for over two months. And then, my onetime bff who is growing away from me at an alarming rate, such as while I am growing obsessed with Robert Jordan, Brian Jaques, DWJ, Kathryn Lasky, Sharon Creech, and Tad Williams, she is mega-obsessed with Stephanie Myers and manga books, as compared to a few years ago when we shared the exact same interests, and it’s making me nostalgic that I can lose this friend with whom I have been friends since kindergarten.

I apologise for the rant, guys, and if you even read this, thanks.

You’re right. I don’t watn to be at school either. Yet, here I am. Alas.

My chorus concert didn’t go too bad yesterday. I accompanied the mixed chorus on the piano and that went well. Or course, I wasn’t really listening to the chorus, so, knowing them, they ruined the song anyway. They’re pretty bad. We weren’t all that hot either, but better then them. The guys didn’t know their part and I do believe that I was one of the only ones singing at one point. But that’s pretty good for learning all those songs in like 3 days. Right? *tries to be optimistic* *fails*

Well, I got a tattoo today. Before you start freaking out let me explain. It was accidental, and it’s not very pretty. This morning I woke up relatively early (for me) and, since mom was still sleeping, I went back to my room and painted my fingernails, then figured I’d read a bit. Gathered up the book and threw myself into what was going to be a sitting position and was stabbed in the back by a pencil. How it got to be in that position I’ll never know, but it pierced through 3 layers of sweatshirt and found lodging near my shoulder blade. Ouch. Needless to say I jumped forward and shrieked rather loudly.
I now have a little black dot where it went it. It didn’t get stuck, but some of the graphite is still there.

La de da, my new tattoo. Too bad all the pencils didn’t arrange themselves into a pretty pattern or something. If I’m gonna go through that it might as well look good, y’know?! *heavy sigh* Alas.

Ouch. On a semi-related note, when my sister was much younger, she stabbed herself in the foot with a toothpick. It was one of those really sharp craft type toothpicks, and I guess it had lodged itself n her carpet point up, and she stepped on it……She got to go to the ER for that, I think, as she was yelling and screaming and crying too much for mom/dad to do anything…… (She was fairly young, I dunno, probably 9 max)

Do other people’s schools have a dress code? Ours is the standard shorts-the-length-of-your-middle finger rule, along with typical no profanity on shirts, no excessive skin showing, etc. Recently, though, our crazed vice principal, who people refer to as The Predator, has begun patrolling the school during all her free time (read: every second of the day when students are not in class) and checking the shorts of every girl whose shorts are of even a remotely questionable length. If it turns out that they’re too short, you get written up. (No one really seems to know what this is, besides that it has something to do with a form and your permanent record. No one seems to know what a permanent record does either.)

This is frustrating, but within the bounds of reasonableness. Then a couple days ago, The Predator started checking the tightness of girls’ jeans. She pinches them and there has to be a certain amount of loose fabric for them to be dress code. If they aren’t dress code, you get written up.

I have a couple of problems with all of this. First of all, neither of these rules are in the handbook’s statement of the dress code. The code states that “clothing revealing […] the bare body” is not allowed, but it nowhere states that middle fingers have anything to do with determining appropriate length. Neither does it state anywhere in the dress code a rule related to the tightness of jeans, nor stretching them to determine said tightness. Shouldn’t the dress code be something that is approved by the school board, and not something that’s come up with on the whims of a vice principal?

Second of all, why is this how our vice principal is spending her time? There are major budget cuts and the principal has recently left the school. Patrolling the halls looking for girls with shorts that only come down, god forbid, to their ring finger, doesn’t seem productive to me. Does anyone else agree?

My pet theory for why she’s recently become more obsessed with rigorously maintaining the dress code is that since the principal was formerly the one to deal with dress code and the principal has recently left, she is taking it upon herself to reform the dress code. “Reform” being used subjectively, of course: the principal already had a 5 B’s rule (no bra, back, belly, butt, or boxers may be visible).

Oh, we just got a new addition to the dress code. Shorts cannot be higher than your fingertips hanging at your side. Believe it or not, a boy broke that rule. We get sporadically checked in class (whenever a teacher happens to remember and actually cares). If you violate it, you’re off to the principal’s office with a detention. Now the tightness of jeans seems pretty outrageous.

Speaking of the new dress code, someone compared it in our SS class to Saudi Arabia.

Our dresscode:

No undergarments showing.
Shirts must cover the collar bone (no one follows this strictly, but they do have to be really modest)
Shorts and skirts must cover the knee.
Shoulders must be covered.
No profanity, etc.

thanks, guys! We’re still friends, and sometimes we manage to bump into each others online times and do some google chat, but the conversation gets ugly if we go towards music and twilight. We email each other occaisonally as well. We’ll probably stay friends, but I still sorrow over the way her tastes are going. Honestly. Heavy metal and S Meyers?! *pies smeyers extra hard for creating a gap between self and megatha (as she is called now by her other friends, so I kinda picked it up as well)*

94- I would say that pinching people’s jeans to see how stretchy they are has to be against some kind of rule, if not law. Your vice principal sounds like she has some problems… I don’t know, maybe you should talk to your parents or something. I mean, really, there are limits. I wouldn’t want my vice principal in my personal space like that…. (That is, if I had a vice principal. Which I don’t. Since I don’t go to school.)

I agree…..It seems to be bordering very close to molestation. The snug part of my jeans are on a part of my body (thighs/butt) that I do not want anybody touching and pinching at, except myself……

But, yes, I definitely agree with Tesseract’s original post: The vice principal has a lot more important of thigns to be worry about than feeling up students in the name of the dress code.

Anyway, the program I used came with my computer ( a Mac–you have a PC, probably?). It’s called “Grab”, its under applications in the Finder window, somewhere. But if you have a PC, I ahve no idea where you would find the equivalent, if it even comes with it and you don’t have to download something….

Ok, back in post #10, I had mentioned my bioethics teacher wanted to know why they had a false fact amongst the real facts in the excerpt I showed him from Muse. You can read my response to him in post #10, as well.

I’m 12 and my parents make me go to bed at 9:00 precisely, but I pretend to be obedient and go to bed, then I turn on my flashlight and read under the covers untill 10:30 usually. Mwahahaha! But if they figured that out, then, *gasps*, I would be grounded from reading in all probability! So, that’s why I use my smallest, dimmest flashlight, and under the covers. Don’t tell on me, please!

Why (and how) would I tell? I used to do that all the time when I was younger……I would still do it now, except I haven’t had a particularly strict bedtime since I was midteens. I just go to bed whenever I feel like it (usually 11 or later, unless I”‘m unusually tired). Although, even though I didn’t have a “real” bedtime in highschool, since I was so far behind on my school (homeschooled, expert procrastinator), I wasn’t supposed tos tay up past ten unless doing school, so I either read by flashlight, or pretended to be doing school….During the summer (except of my junior year, when I procrastinated so long I did school all summer), I just stayed up and read w/o needing to pretend to sleep. That is, in highschoolish age.

Re: dress code: I have no idea what ours is, but it can’t be terribly strict. You see girls in short shorts with half their chest showing all the time, and guys with their pants down to their knees and miles of underwear showing. I kind of just ignore it. Some classrooms have dress codes, but I think our school’s dress code is something like “Nothing too distracting.”

Goodness- we have uniforms, but we’re not a private or charter school.
And because I’m leaving the school next year and it’s nearly summer my parents refuse to buy me new skirts or shorts so I ended up cutting up one of my 3 skirts (one that got over-bleached in the wash) and sewing bits of it onto my others to make them longer. Now my skirts are long enough for me to feel comfortable, but today I was called to the Headmistress’s office to explain why the bottom of my skirt is lighter colored that the top…

Anyway, she called my parents and after a brief discussion accepted their argument and told my to go back to class. Our school is really strict. But I got to miss part of Drama. w00t!

Dress Codes: We have disgusting uniforms, but on dress down, we can wear ‘modest’ T-shirts with shorts or skirts no more than 2 inches above the knee. The shirts can’t be see through and they can’t have any ‘heathen’ phrases or band names on them. They spazzed when I wore my MCR hoodie.

At my junior high in California, the home ec teacher was notorious for making girls in miniskirts bend forward at the waist; then she’d use her tape measure to determine whether there was sufficient backside coverage. If not, the girl was sent home.

We also had “casual days” when girls were allowed to wear slacks (probably not jeans, though my mother wouldn’t even buy them for me), except I was always afraid I had the date wrong, so I never participated.

50.2.1.3.1.1.1(Luna the Lovely)- Well, I managed to fall (I was running and I tripped on the hose) on our concretedrive two years ago, right on my nose, and that was a mess. My glasses were scratched beyond belief, but they didn’t break, and there wasn’t a HUGE amount of blood. (Maybe isn’t different when it’s your nose?) The front of my face looked awful, but I didn’t get scars or anything. It actually looked worse than it felt, but ouch.

89(Armarda)-You’ve never heard of Doctor Who? Wow, I spent Monday drawing Cybermen(or at least, it was MEANT to be a cyberman) and Daleks all over my school organizer.

DOES THE WHOLE OF MUSEBLOG LEARN FRENCH? Like me, who should actually be studying said French but is wasting time capitalizing?

Hey, cool! I understood what you said and I don’t even know French…..Although I did “translate” the French on the backs of my Harry Potter stamps (I got those for my 16th or 17th birthday–pretty sweet)……Gotta love the French for those.

And of course, France itself is very nice, even if the one time I tried to speak a bit of French there I horribly butchered it, and I never got a chance to try escargot…..

*Aww, that site’s down. Too bad.

2. While TOR is a great tool for anonymity, China uses a complex router system (built by Cisco) to funnel all data traffic through filters, which allow for both the blocking and tracing of all requests sent. So while one could remain anonymous, outside information would not be reached.

Teeth…I have to get my wisdom teeth out before they grow all the way in because there’s not enough room in my mouth (funny, it’s always seemed big enough before..) for them. It’s already making some of my teeth go a bit crooked, not badly, but if it continues like this it will be.
I’m not looking forward to having them come out just before things are happening. If I had plenty of time to be in pain and misery it would be one thing, but perhaps it’ll be best to have other things to keep my mind off of my mouth. Like a bonfire and group of people coming over and many introductions to make, hopefully gracefully. *frightened squawk*

I’m afraid I’m off now, dad passed by my room carrying a bag of doughnuts……..

121- Sorry for not answering. I’m in Singapore. But I’m from New Zealand. What was it that made you guess that? Singapore is horrid. All the buildings and clothes are really flash but the climate is so humid you can’t run more than 800m at a time without having to stop and catch your breath. I miss COLD SUMMERS!

I have a pendulum. I made it out a carved round wooden rabbit and a chain. It answers questions, but only yes or no questions. It’s kind of like playing a game of twenty questions, but instead of stopping at twenty, it just goes on and on.
Call me childish, but it works! It answers yes to true questions, and no to wrong questions, and it gave me the same answer three times for the same question.

This morning I got my sister out of bed by reading her the balcony scene from Romeo and Juliet. I cast open the door and cried “Arise, far sun, and—” and then couldn’t remember the next word (though I knew the line) so I ran and got the book and read it aloud.

Yes. I asked about my daemon (that took a while) and I eventually got it to tell me. Apparently, it’s a butterfly, and I tested it by asking other things, and it won’t say yes to anything but butterfly.
I also asked about other things which I wasn’t sure about and I’m still not sure about. Towards the end of the day, though, it started giving contradictory answers and not working anymore. Maybe it’s because I wasn’t concentrating.

Silver Lining: A pendulum is essentially an object on a string, that swings back and forth. It’s a physics thing I guess, but it’s also a…I dunno…magic thing. To get it to answer questions, you hold it perfectly still and ask the question. If the answer is yes, it moves a certain way, and if it’s no, it moves a different way.
Hemlock (do you mind if I call you that? I know it’s a book, but it’s long): That was an alethiometer. Pendulums are different. Similar concept, though.

I need to get my last baby tooth out before May 26, when I have an orthadontist appointment. I can’t proceed with my tooth-straightening process until it’s out. And it’s a bottom molar. I remember when I got my other bottom molar out it was hanging upside-down in my mouth by a little hook on the tooth. Wheee, what fun, lots of blood. So that will probably happen again. *wince*
Anyone here have tooth stains?

Eh…….well, I’m using the term “friends” in the loosest term to describe the people I see regularly. What it means in that context is that they don’t tell me that I’m stupid, they don’t care when my birthday is, and I tolerate them being horridly rude. So really, here in TN I’ve only got about eh, 5-6 actuall friends, and about 8 not-quite-but-I call-em that for lack of a better term “friends”. And then in SC, I have like, 15 friends whom I haven’t seen for two years, and 6 friends whom I haven’t seen for one year. And in NC I have one friend who I saw in April, she’s the RPattz and SMeyer fanatic. My friend situation in one paragraph. Wow!

You see, Robert, I have done stuff to her. I always say something back to her, and I once accidentally hit her with a plastic rake. It was a flimsy plastic rake made for toddlers who aspire to be farmers, but I hit her all the same. I think I apologised, but I can’t be sure. I’ve stopped insulting her for no reason, though, so I guess that’s progress. *feels like a mean person*

I was afraid it might be something like that. It’s hard to break out of loops like that once you’re in them. You might try “Look, I’m sorry about all those things I did to you. Let’s stop this before we wind up killing each other or something, OK? Please?” adjusting the tone as appropriate. Or you could follow Cromwell’s advice in 140.

Stopping your own unprovoked insults is progress. So is that dose of guilt. Good for you! Keep it up.

We got a reading assignment where we are divided up into groups and the teacher chooses a book for us. We got The Iron Ring. Three of the four people in my group finished early, so I found a great book for us. Billy Budd. Considering we’re in 7th grade, my teacher was a little skeptical, but agreed.
1. It is impossible to read while not in close proximity to a dictionary.
2. I often have to read each paragraph twice.
3. I have to read incredibly slowly to understand.
Notwithstanding, I will finish the book with my group.
Who else has read Billy Budd?

gah. I need something to unfog my mind and wake me up. I’m just glad classes are OVER, except that means I’ve got finals all next week, and perhaps worst of all: My first final isn’t until Tuesday, which means I have four solid days with nothing to do except study, which you would think would be a good thing, but really isn’t, judging from last semester. (And then I only had three) You can only study so long before you just want to take you test and get it over with, and four solid days of nothing but studying is enough to drive anybody crazy.

On the bright side, I can get a 56% on my Chemistry final and still get an A, and if I completely flunk it (as in, got a 0), I will still come out with a B. My current grade in the class is 30% above the average. Scary, really, that the average in the class so far is only 66%. My best hope is that the professor himself grades the test, as he seems to be unable to add (much like myself). Two tests in a row now, he has added it up with the wrong number of points. First two extra points, and then 3, for a total of 5 extra points. I love it when people can’t add and it turns out in your favor…..

Biomed terminology, I can skip the final if I choose (we get to drop one test w/o penalty) since I have a 99.6% average in the course. That would mean not ahving to study 1500 or so words and their definitions. I’ll probably take the test, just not do much in the way of studying.

Bioethics: I think I’ll get an A in that, unless I really screwed up the final yesterday, or unless I really screw up the final “project” next Friday. I only needed solid Bs on those for an A.

English: Just need a high B on my last submission of my final paper for an A. So far all my final submissions have been As, so unless it’s just a really crappy paper, I should be good there. Oh, yes, that’s something else I can (need) to do besides study this weekend…..

History: I need a 71% on the final Tuesday for an A. Shouldn’t be difficult. he gives a list of all the questions that might appear on the test (40 short answer, 3 essays), and is going to take 15 of the short answer (of which we write 10) and 1 of the three essays (no choice on which one, sadly, or I could save myself writing one of them). So, only thing with that is it’s incredibly time consuming to study for it, as you have to write 40 paragraphs and 3 essays. Which is what I’m putting off doing right now. I need to write a minimum of 10 of the paragraph questions today….. *sighs*

Sorry, guys, I know nobody really cares about my pointless fretting about my grades, but it’s you or my roommate, and I imagine she wants to hear it even less. And my parents will just tell me they told me so (that college is no harder than highschool) and to shut up and stop worrying, and that I will do great, and just study instead of fretting about my grades, since it won’t help. So, yeah, that left you all. At least you guys have the option of just skipping this post, no?

Tooth complaints: I’m 15 and one-half, and my 12 year molars haven’t come in yet.

Random stuff: It is raining, and I’m writing an annoying paper on Robert Frost. Oh, and REALLY random, but my nickname is Rob Robbert. I friend and I were walking down the street and we saw ‘Bob’ written in the sidewalk. We discussed it, and decided that, if Rob was short for Robert, Bob should be short for Bobbert. Hence, Rob Robbert, and my friend, Bob Bobbert. Just FYI. This paragraph is what we call stream-of-consciousness, otherwi – hey, a bird!

Hey all. Yes, I’m back briefly. I have a couple questions for americans and I wasn’t sure where else to ask them. Well, one is a strictly american question and the other is just a question about the 1800s. Okay Question number 1: What is up with “thru” is that actually how you spell “through” or is there some other meaning behind it? I’m just curiouse because I came upon it several times recently. Question Number 2: Why, in books written in the 1800s are most place names written as ——shire and the dates written as 18—–? I have never found an explanation to this and a couple of my friends and I were wondering. I was really expecting an explanation at the end of “JS&Mr.N” ah well, what can you do? I hope someone can help me, because I’d really like to know the answers to these questions.

As for “thru” versus “through”, I always spell it “through”, I think “thru” is just a shorthand/lazy version of the spelling of “through”. It doesn’t have a different meaning, as far as I know.

Second question: Haven’t a clue. Well, the second part, unless I misunderstand your meaning, I’m not quite sure what the question is. If hte book sis written in the 1800s, and takes place in that time period, why wouldn’t the dates be 18—–? As in 1801, 1802, 1803, etc. I’m guessing I’m not understanding what you’re getting at with that part of the question…..

Omitting parts of dates and placenames is an old literary convention. Many early novelists adopted the pose of writing as if their stories were true accounts. Leaving out specifics presumably added an air of verisimilitude, as if the author were protecting some confidential information.

Yes, but why was it a literary convention in the first place? That’s what I’d be interested in knowing.
I know it was done, I’ve read books that are like that….I know it was common, I’ve noticed it in many period writings, and I understand that novelists would adapt their writing to seem more like reality (think Robinson Crusoe, it was published as a true account), but…..why would names, place names and dates be hidden in the first place? I can understand crossing out swear words, but why the others?

I forget the details and don’t have time to write at the moment, but it had to do with novels being new (hence “novels”) and therefore developing from and imitating the existing literary forms, such as memoirs, letters, and the like. The elisions were only some of the conventions used to create the “true” account.

There are deeper psychological elements, too. A certain amount of voyeurism. A certain authority. Think how movies like to use “based on a true story” or camera effects to look like handheld footage. Trompe l’oeil in art. You can probably think of lots of examples.

147~Question 1: The spelling of “through” as “thru” is simply laziness. If I’m not mistaken I’ve seen people from other countries (European, English speaking) spell it that way too. It’s not just American, and no, it’s not how everyone here spells it, nor is it the standard.
Question 2: Now, this is something I don’t know as much about, I’m guessing a bit based on what I’ve gathered from reading books from the 18th century, so take this with several grains of salt. I’ve noticed the same thing in 18th century (1700s) books as well, often crossing out the middle portion of place names, years and, often references to contemporary figures, also expletives. (eg. d—n, Ms. P—–m, —–shire)
I don’t know why, except that the things crossed out were references to places and people that whoever was reading was expected to be familiar with.
Perhaps someone else will know more about why this was the case, I’d be interested as well. I’m sure the information is out there.

Well, hate to show up and then run, but I’m off to watch Back to the Future…Yes, at this hour. Very sad.

Tomorrow I have to go to the oral surgeon’s to have them look at my teeth, then next week they come out. *cowers*

My oral surgeon was one of two brothers who shared a practice. They were a hoot together. Being in their office was something like being in a Marx brothers movie, except they were actually good at the dentistry part. I was trying hard to stay awake to hear their patter, but the anaesthesia knocked me out very quickly. The next thing I remember I was asking when the procedure was to begin, and my mom said “they’ve already finished.” It was the only enjoyable dentistry-related experience in my life.

Wait, did they put you all the way out? As in, you weren’t conscious for the procedure? Because both my parents say that the dentists/surgeons/whatever won’t do that. When my mom got her wisdom teeth removed, sometime before I was born but after she was married to my dad, she says that both dad and the doctor swore to her that she would be fully unconscious for the procedure–the only reason she agreed. and then, of course, she was not, as both of them knew full well. Apparently she was really pissed off.

When I eventually get my wisdom teeth removed, I would really love to be fully unconscious, but…..From what I’ve been told, that’s not likely to happen. Which is too bad….

I was completely out. As I said, I didn’t even realize they’d done the surgery when I came to. The other people I knew who had them out were also put under. I wasn’t aware there were other options, actually, especially if, as I did, one has all four out at once. You should ask the oral surgeon.

Yes, if I am “forced” to have them out, I will definitely try to see if that is an option. I do think both my parents only had 2 of their wisdom teeth, so perhaps that had something to do with it.

I do know that when my sister had two of her baby teeth pulled (she was 16-18, I forget) because the adult teeth weren’t growing in, that she says she wasn’t out for the procedure. She doesn’t really remember it all very clearly, because of all the drugs they gave her, but she was conscious for it.

Perhaps it depends on the amount of digging necessary to get the teeth out. In my sister’s case, obviously, the teeth were not buried below the gums, but with wisdom teeth, the depth is, I imagine, quite variable.

Re: Scars
I have about three scars, one from when I was trying to move a piece of driftwood far enough out into the ocean to use as a boat, and my hand got caught between the driftwood and the boat ramp’s concrete, which isn’t really visible anymore, but if I really look, I can still see it, I think.
My other two are from an embarrassing bicycle accident when I tried to go between my sister and a tree, and there wasn’t quite enough room. I crashed, got scars on the front and back of my hand, one of which is visible quite easily, the other of which is more visible in imagination than by eye, if you know what I mean. It’s kind of funny, ’cause they’re all on the same hand.

I had surgery only once, but not to remove any teeth. When I was comming to, I explained to my mother that the square root of 27 is three, then insisted that I was fine. Waking up, I didn’t remember talking at all. At least I didn’t say anything personal.

Yeah, I’ve had “surgery”once too. When I broke my arms (yes, plural) when I was nine (jumping out of a swing, I fractured the growth plates on both wrists), the doctors thought that I might need to have pins put in. So, they knocked me completely unconscious for the procedure, although they ended up not having to use any pins, fortunately.

Apparently when I was waking up, one of the doctors in the ER asked me if I like stickers, and I apparently said something like, “Sort of.” (At the time, I absolutely loved stickers.) He gave me a huge stack of ’em, probably about a dozen or so of those large, round stickers.

I don’t remember it at all. The first thing I remember after the procedure was being wheeled out of the ER in a wheel chair, and noticing that the weather ahd changed from beautiful and sunny, to rainy.

Worst part? I broke my arms right before the state fair, and couldn’t go on a single ride that year…..

I had a bad day today. I stretched my legs out too far when on the toilet, and the fly on my jeans broke, so I had to go around all day with three safety pins holding my fly shut.

Yesterday, on Spacevidcast, we were talking about NASA as if it were a show with every decade as a season. (pretty much- 1957-1969 was Season 1, though) It was hilarious.

Re:Surgery–I’ve had surgery once, when I was four, for a hernia in my side. I don’t remember much about it, except that the anesthesia smelled like strawberries. My little sister, however, has been in the ER twice, both for head injuries (once was the couch-jumping episode I told about earlier, and the other was when she was climbing a tree when it was raining and fell out of it headfirst onto a flagstone. Luckily she was only about five feet up when it happened), and the only reason she didn’t go three times is because we were in the Bahamas when she spiked her head on a branch. She seems to have bad luck regarding head injuries…

Ohhhh god the AP US History test was today oh man

I am legally bound not to say anything about it in detail ect, but the multiple choice was okay I think even though I know I got quite a few wrong, the DBQ was just weird and the first essay set was okay, but I totally bombed the second. I’ll talk more about it after 48 hours otherwise it’s kind of hard to explain

Hey, Jadestone, congrats! My friends just took it, and I will take it next year, and Lord help me, I’m scared to death. Not of the test, mind you, of all the studying! I don’t study very well, I have zero patience. I came out of my last morning class, and there was this whole group of juniors just standing in a huddle, and I’m like, “Oh, you seem to be reasonably alive!” and they were like, “Ugh.” So I’m NOT looking forward to it. The beginning of the class is bad enough. 40 pages to read for Monday! Help! And I hope I don’t go all caveman when I take the darn thing. No sleep will do that to you, I suppose.

Hehe. I broke my left elbow in third grade. I actually DID have to have pins stuck in my arm, though. And I supose no one wants to hear my loong story from the time I broke my arm? It involves a male nurse that looks like Elvis, monkey bars, and some other stuff. But its soooo looooong I think you might find it boring anyway. So, unless you want me to, I won’t bore you guys.

I broke my arm once. I had to wait for four hours in a waiting room before the nurse would even acknowledge that I had a problem (my lower wrist was bent completely backwards) and another 45 minutes before a doctor could see me. Then, after the doctor decided that my arm was indeed broken, I was sent to Radiology, where I waited a further 30 minutes before being admitted to the X-ray room. There, a radiologist took 20 minutes to set up everything, I finally got the X-rays, and after considerable confusion was sent back to the general practitioner. THEN I was sent to the cast room, where I waited about 30 minutes before getting in, by which time I was almost screaming in frustration and agony. I was by myself- my mother kept calling to ask why I wasn’t home and didn’t believe me that I was at the hospital- and by the time I got my arm bound and could walk home it was dark. Which is scary for a 5th grader.

Wow, my ER visit was pretty much no wait whatsoever. Also, I would’ve thought that at that age, the doctors would’ve called and hunted down your parent….

From what I remember, my mom took me in, and I was crying (well, two fractured wrists, what 9 year old wouldn’t’ve been?), and the receptionist lady–to a doctor/nurse/someone or other when she saw us–“Hey, there’s a girl here–she’s crying.”

And I was whisked away to a room, where there was this really nice nurse/doctor (I’m not sure which he was, but he was very friendly. I’m guessing nurse) guy. He told me I probably had broken my arms, that he had jumped out of a swing when he was a kid, and had broken his arm. (Or maybe he said he knew somebody who had, I forget). He told me that there was a portable x-ray machine that could be used, but that it wasn’t as reliable, so he was really sorry, but he wanted me to go down the hall to radiology to get x-rays.

So I was taken to radiology with my mother, where this evil b**** radiologist did everything in her power to ensure that if my wrists were not yet broken when I got there, they sure as heck were when she was done with me. Seriously, she was vicious. She wanted my arm on the x-ray table, outer side of the wrist down, fingers/wrist/hand perfectly straight, palmar surface perpendicular to the table. Well, given how bad my arms hurt, this wasn’t something I was managing very well. My wrists kept twisting inward, so that my palm was angling down toward the table, at which point the woman would come running back over to me, forcibly grab my arm, and twist it back upright into the position she wanted. So, yeah, if they hadn’t be broken when i got there……She was EVIL.

And then I was taken back to my room, and the nice nurse/doctor guy put an IV in my foot (or maybe that was before I went to radiology, I’m not sure), and the next thing I really remember was I was in a wheelchair leaving, and it was raining. (It ahd been beautiful and sunny when I had gone to the ER, and dark and rainy after).

If you insist. I will tell it as I do in RL. Here goes:
Ok, so it was the weekend before school started, I was getting ready for my Suzuki Book 2 Recital and just that morning my mum had said that I was ready for the recital. Now, we’re at the big playground, and I’m just goofing around by the monkey bars. Let me tell you before I move on that at the time, although I was in third grade, some of the first graders at my school were almost a head taller than me, and even though I had to jump to reach the monkey bars at the playground, I was extremely good at it, and I knew it. So, I’m hanging out by the monkey bars, the ones with the funky triangular plastic blue handles hanging on chains, and this girl who was about a foot taller than me was standing on the ladder on the other side of the monkey bars with her dad trying to get her to get on. So I think, “Oh, I can show her how easy it is!”, and jump right on without a second thought, swinging across from one bar to another. Then, when I’m in the middle, swinging from my right hand with my left outstretched to the next bar, my sweaty hand slips from the bar and I fall the whole distance between the monkey bars and the ground to land straight on my left elbow. Naturally, the other girl’s dad decides that maybe the monkey bars aren’t such a good idea and hurries away. So here’s me, lying on the ground, crying, obviously. So my mom gets me up and into the car and we head back home. My mom was freaked out, because I hardly ever cry when hurt unless it’s really serious, and I’m shaking all over. So, we get home, and I try to open the door with my left hand, and freak out when I discover that I can’t control my arm from the elbow down. So my mom calls the doctor and they said to “Put some ice on it overnight, and if it still hurts in the morning then come to the hospital.”, and I’m like, “No way. My arm is broken.”, and so we go to the ER, where they give me a sling and I just sit there for two hours. Then, I get taken to the x-ray room where they tell me to straighten out my arm for the x-ray. I’m like,”I can’t straighten it, it’s broken! Hello?” then they conclude that it is broken. Gah. So then I have to wait 6 hours in a waiting room for my surgery, finally in the middle of the night they do my surgery, and it just so happens that one of the nurses is an Elvis impersonator and just keeps the hairdo all the time. Soo, around 1:00am I wake up in the ambulance being shuttled to the building where they keep the patients, I’m groggy from the drugs they used to knock me out during the surgery, and so the first thing I see is this nurse with an Elvis hairdo. My dad says my eyes went as big as saucers! Then I thought that I was just having a weird dream and went back to sleep.

Do you want to hear the rest, or am I boring you? The next part involves swollen face, being stuck in the hospital for two days longer than expected, and going back to school to find that three others at my school had broken their arms. But I think you probably wouldn’t be interested.

166- I did assume that they would- I walked there after school- but hey, it’s not America (where, I have heard, they make a big fuss over child safety, parental guidance, etc. etc… Anyway, my mum just said over the phone, “You WHAT??? Oh, well, just be home by dinner.” And when I got home I was kid of hurt that she hadn’t been very upset or worried but then she told me that until she saw my cast she thought I was lying and that I was going somewhere with my friends. She was really sorry.

I got part way through the Suzuki book 2 (violin) and then quit. I didn’t like it at all, thankfully I didn’t go through with my resolve to never have anything to do with the violin again, however. I think I’d die if I had to stop playing now.

The funny thing was, I broke it when I was running down a hill and skidded to avoid a badly parked motorbike and sort of flopped straight into a tree, and it didn’t hurt very much for about 10 minutes. I was just, I guess, sort of in shock, and I was really calm, I just looked with mild interest at my swelling, bloody, and bent-back arm and thought, “Oh, that’s bad… I guess I should walk to the clinic” since the clinic was just about ten minutes away along the waterfront. The minute I walked in the clinic door it started hurting SO badly that I screamed.

*shudder* that makes me cringe just reading about it……When I fractured my wrists (overall, much less serious of fractures, from the sounds of it, although the fact that it was the growth plates certainly had the potential to be really bad), they hurt pretty much instantaneously and I was crying, and I couldn’t barely move them without intense pain…..

That’s actually by design. They aren’t supposed to start hurting intensely until a bit later… I forget exactly how the pain is prevented, but I know why. It’s an evolutionary thing – so you can get away from whatever caused the pain and then deal with it.

Damnit, Human Bio is slipping away from me. I think it has something to do with the nerves being shut down or flooded with something that blocks them.

While bored in class, en drew an hpb on her organizer. En’s friends asked about it, and now many of them know all about it. One friend had the following conversation with en:
Friend: So you had a French test?
Victim: Yes.
Friend: How did it go?
Victim: Good, only there there was this one question I couldn’t answer, “How often does Stephane go to the cinema”
Friend: Did you write hot pink bunnies?
Victim: No, I said “A lot”
Then, hpbs led to the odd cyberman and dalek. So someone had told en that en shouldn’t be shouldn’t be colouring her organizer in French. She was scribbling in black, over hpbs, cybermen and daleks.
Sad tale.

169) Ouch. I sort of broke my collarbone once. Sort of because it wasn’t completely broken- the top part was, but a bit of the bottom was still together. It happened on a playground in Austria, and since we were flying to America the next day it took my parents several days to find out that there was really something wrong- since the bottom part was still connected, I could move my arm almost normally and the bone felt like it was in the right place. We finally went to a hospital several days later, and I got stuck with a sort of harness-strap thing that stopped me from moving my arm to much. I loathed it from ruining my first ever summer vacation (I was 7).

Hmm. My court finds Robert Frost to be guilty- he should have suppressed his talents.
My email got hacked. I only found out when my friend asked why I had sent her an email advertising shirts.
Time travel is theoretically possible. I forget the details, but it’s something about traveling at light speed in space- apparently if you do that for about a decade, you will have aged 1 second less than if you were on Earth.

Should dark, gloomy rock musicians suppress their talents, too?

Einstein’s special theory of relativity does talk about time distortions for objects traveling near the speed of light. We know they happen, because they affect the decay rates of fast-moving particles such as cosmic rays. But relativity just offers a quicker way to travel into the future; it doesn’t allow time travel into the past. That’s much more speculative.

I personally find some of his best works beautiful, and not depressing in the least. Perhaps it’s because he seems to convey states of place so well, not necessarily moods.

Our computer teacher is about as Muserly as a person who doesn’t read Muse can be. I went into her room to ask if I could watch Space Shuttle Atlantis take off on a computer with some headphones and she put it on the SmartBoard and turned the sound up full blast so that everybody could watch!

I was in today’s paper, apparently. I have very little idea what they said about me (my interview was sort of scattered and it wasn’t until halfway through that I realized I was being interviewed), but I know some of it related to my art auction, and I just got a call from some club or another who want to make a donation. Which would be absolutely splendid, though given the amount of money we’ve earned already simply from raffle tickets, I don’t know how much more we’ll need. This is very exciting, because another thing I’d like to do in the future is go sailing on the Lynx from California to Hawaii, but it costs $5,000. But if I’m getting calls from people who want to donate money for this expedition, perhaps going on that one’s not such an impossible plan after all!

Continuation: I was going to get a detention but luckily they found a squirrel in the Science lab. No, seriously. We don’t know how it got in but they found it between the test tubes and a bottle of some chemical. It was gnawing on a beaker rack.

People, go look up chacha .com it’s flamablamablous. If you have a cell phone and texting, it’s even more so, since you can use it. Awesomeness. It’s a cell phone search engine sort of thing. Send them a question and they call or text an answer back. Only problem is that there’s a limit on how many text questions you can ask per day. *sigh* I didn’t know about that so I used up most of mine, oh well. It’s awesome though, definitely look it up!

I was in DC today, went down with Tad which is always fun.
Hey, a question (!) for Robert, since he spends a fair amount of time there….we’ve noticed these little figures painted on some of the crosswalks and (Tad said) on the sidewalks. They look rather like a flat robot. He said the ones on the sidewalk are white, but in the crosswalk they’re yellow. Not very big, maybe half a foot (I dunno, I’m guessing), and not grafitti, but they don’t look like anything traffic related. Is there any significance or explanation of them?

I was in a room with some of my friends and we were teasing another one of my friends (a guy) and one person said “six of the girls in this room are manlier than you are” and I noticed there were seven girls in the room so I called the person who’d said that on it and asked who the less manly girl was. This turned out to be me. At this point I blurt “but I use power tools at work!” and am told that I, too, am manlier than this person. Upon thinking about this I realize it is because I’m small that I wasn’t included in the first place. Sometimes I really hate being small. People have this perception that I’m a fragile bird and will break in an instant when really I won’t.

When it comes to links or possible links, our spam filter seems to be even more sensitive than GAPAs. Not only is it suspicious of commercial web pages but of advocacy sites as well, as we discovered last night when Luna posted a list of agencies known for their stances on abortion. She only listed names, without hint of a URL. Probably one, or even two, would have passed through the gates without interference, but I guess four raised the alarm.

Okay, I went to HUGE community party today, and half of the 11th grade (I’m in 10th, but I’m friends with the 11th graders more than my own class. Oh well.) was there, and quite a few people from my middle school class, and I wore pigtails! Now, that is NOT a typical hairstyle. I looked five-year old cute, maybe. Fits me, but so many people are so not into standing out in any nonconforming way. My friend told me she respected me because I was very brave for looking the way I did. *is proud* That was nothing, though, she has apparently forgotten my hamburger hat.

(215) Fiddler: The robots are a kind of street art related to a strange type of graffiti known as Toynbee tiles. They’re usually called “stickmen” and apparently have been sighted in Philadelphia and Los Angeles, too. I’ve read that they’re made by stenciling an image onto tar paper and laying it on the street, where passing cars flatten it level with the surrounding pavement. You can find out more about them by searching for “stickman” and “Toynbee tile” on Google.

Hm, Toynbee tiles might make a good “Last Page” for Muse. Elizabeth Preston, take note!

Actually, Toynbee and stickman (I’m curious about the stickman figures, what do they mean? I didn’t find any explanation, intelligible or otherwise, that explained their meaning) tiles might be a good subject for an entire article in Muse, perhaps in an issue on city/street art and graffiti…..that would be very interesting as a whole issue, actually. Has there already been something like that done? It sounds like a properly muserly thing. Accessable, seemingly random but incredibly fascinating and view changing. EEEK Humanities exam in five days and I have to write about Alexander the Great!!!!!! AND maths exam- which is just plain boring- and ENGLISH exam in which I have to babble about 19th century society! (“babble” here means “write very repetitive essay”)

I’ve not read the book, but I have to imagine that it is easier than you think……I mean, seven paragraph: two are knocked off with intro/closing (I assume when you said seven, you didn’t jsut mean body paragraphs), and that only leaves five.

Five paragraphs is really not that bad at all. Of course, I tend to end up writing more than the required number of pages on assignments, because i find I can’t fit everything requested into the right number of pages……My dad says I tend to be too verbose, and that I have lots of colorful/flowery phrases and such that I could remove, and still have the same meaning, in much less words (and pages)….But I like my “floweriness”. It makes my writing me.

Essay tip of the day: If the last line of a paragraph is nearly a full line, go back through the paragraph, take out all contractions and add effectively meaningless phrases (e.g. “in fact,” “actually,”) where appropriate. This typically pushes the last word of the last line onto a new line, and behold! your paper is now a line longer. This adds up if you do it for every paragraph.

We play it, if you say something at the same time, the jinxed one can’t talk until their name is said, by anyone. This results in two strategies. One, annoying who ever is handy until they shout ‘STOP DOING THAT, ___’ . This usually results in a few minutes of bothering, and the bothered person, who knows perfectly well what’s going on, finally gives in and says, ‘Fine. ___’. The other strategy involves dropping out of the conversation until somebody says your name, but it doesn’t work to well. Well, I’ve talked for ages on the same topic as a dead conversation, so I’m shutting up.

Our band concert is tomorrow and we are incredibly not ready to play the songs. The song that we are starting out with that’s supposed to make us sound better than the seventh graders still sounds like we’re in our first week of playing it.

On a brighter note, Memorial Day Weekend is arriving soon, and I’m going up to my grandparents’ house. I love small towns where everyone knows everyone. Now that “the grandkids” are in their teens, they are the ones with the scandalous lives, and are the ones my grandparents talk about. I love hearing about so-and-so’s grandkid just got accepted into Harvard, or about how kids these days “don’t have an appreciation for nature” (that one was from my grandpa).

*waves* Nice to see you again, Grant! How goes college? Do you get out soon, or have you already gotten out? I’ve got my last final this Friday, and then I will have conquered my first year of college.

*sigh* It’ll be nice to go home. Where it’s not horribly humid, and where the weather is “normal.” In other words, summers, at hottest, tend to be mid/high 70s…..

Oh, yes, the riddle. Erm, well, I suppose it probably is easy, and perhaps if I wasn’t sick, dreadfully tired, and burnt out on Chemistry studying……Why I’m putting much effort into that, I dunno, I’m guaranteed a B no matter what I get on the final, and only need a 56% for an A…..Er, oops. Sorry, off on a tangent.

I shall go with: a human? Wrong, I’m sure, but…..so tired. *must sleep*

Gah. Like I always tell people: I get very talkative when I don’t get enough sleep. This post is case in point.

Ugh. I JUST finished the AP Global History exam, which was four hours long. (I had to write 3 essays! I. HATE. ESSAYS.) I have absolutely no sense of time right now and I’m feeling very out of it, so my guidance councilor is letting me stay in her room and use her computer while she gets my homework, because I don’t think I’d do very well in Spanish class right now. I guess I’ll stay here the rest of the period, go to Art, then go home.

Urgh. I think my stomach has decided it’s nervous about my chem final……Lovely, an hour of feeling unwell because my stomach has a mind of its own. I’ve no reason to be nervous, I’d have to do really poorly on the exam to lose my A, but…..Try convincing my stomach of that.

My stomach has also decided to tie itself in knots…

Middle school drama sucks. There’s a dance tonight (which I’m not going to) and everyone is going nuts about it. This always happens the day of the dance. So I ended up getting made fun of and being completely humiliated. So I ran out of the lunchroom and called my mom and made her come pick me up early.

Not to mention the fact that I lost my purse. Which has my cell phone, wallet ($2 of mine, $8 of my dad’s to pay for my dance ticket, library card, ATM card, school ID), several pens and pencils, a flashlight (yes, I’m OCD), a bunch of lip gloss, my flash drive, and… my sketchbook. The worst thing to lose, in my opinion.

SO I have a headache, still, even though I took a Tylenol, and a stomachache.

Meh.

So even though I should be working on physics as I know *NOTHING* from this chapter (literally, it’s independent study and I have barely read one section much less done any problems x_x), I have instead been trying to make myself a Star Trek uniform from things around the house/my closet. It goes not so well. I only have a black tennis skirt I’ve never worn, a short sleeved red shirt and a long sleeved blue one, and I thought I had black tights but I guess I don’t.

I still need to find tights, knee-high black boots, modify the shirt I pick, make an insignia, ect.

But Lee’s friend’s husband has the actual communicators and other things he might lend us! XD

I’m going with a group of people who are mostly dressing up so this should be fun… we couldn’t go to the midnight premiere because of AP testing –_–

Okay, so I FINALLY finished all the homework I had (Most of it I had all week to do, but couldn’t, because I had to, you know, STUDY for the exam.)

The crew at the Hubble finished their first spacewalk, and everything is going fine. They removed the famous Wide Field Planetary Camera, which will go to the Smithsonian.

I was back at my old elementary school for a Show Choir performance, at it brought back such memories. Show Choir is a huge deal at G——-: only fifth graders can be in it, and there are probably about five hours or so of practice every week. At the end of the year there’s a trip to Carowinds, a semi-local amusement park, and our show choir has won its competition for twelve years straight. This is going to be the thirteenth year as of May 30. I was year 9, and my younger sister was year 11.

I happened to be at Carowinds on a school trip when year 10 was there, and several of my friends and I watched their performance. When they won, it was almost as wonderful and exhilarating an experience as winning myself–and that, let me tell you, is one of the two or three top experiences of my life thus far.

After watching this year’s performance and sniffling a little, I went and walked around the school for a few minutes. All the lights were off, but when I went and stood outside my fifth grade classroom, I felt as though if I could just open the door and walk in I’d see my friends of four years ago running around doing morning questions or jobs, or learning math with factoring blocks, or even listening to one of Mr. W’s stern lectures.

It’s a strange feeling, to know you’re getting further and further away from a time you cherished. Fifth grade was an absolutely wonderful year for me.

Wheeeeeeeeeeee! I seriously think I dominated by chemistry final! And even if I didn’t, I certainly think I got the necessary 56%. I am so incredibly happy and excited, I swear I was grinning the entire walk back to my dorm.

All I’ve got left is my bioethics “final project” tomorrow, where we go in and watch some show/movie/something, and then answer questions about it……Shouldn’t be too hard, not much studying of any sort to do for that, just review some ethical theories a bit.

In less than 24 hours I will be moved out of my dorm, and on my way HOME!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! and I will have conquered one (of eight…..*insert nose wrinkle*) year of college. w00t!

*is very excited/hyper/whatever, in case you couldn’t tell*

That’s good. So many people spend their time wishing they were grown up, and then……Let’s just say that I, anyway, wish I could return to being a kid again. Six years old sounds nice, ‘though 6th grade wasn’t too bad, I don’t think. I dunno, I was homeschooled. Up until 8th grade when I started correspondence classes via out of state high schools/colleges, it all sort of ran together.

So you’ll be starting Junior High next year, then? That should be exciting, I think.

258~ Last fall I went to Calvert Cliffs to a little campground place where I spent several of the best summers of my life (it was an old girl scout camp, with awesome rustic cabins, now privately owned and rented out). It was back when Ms. C’s little school was still going, and the homeschool group that gathered around it. A bunch of kids, aged 8 to 12, great friends all, having a blast on the cliffs and beach, plus incredible field trips. I cherish the memories of those summers.
Well, I went back with just my parents and seeing the boy’s cabin occupied by another family, and not staying in the girl’s cabin was hard, though if we’d have been in our old cabin I probably would have just cried the whole time. Walking on the beach in the moonlight without my best friends was hard, not going swimming in our clothes and then getting covered with sand as we plopped down and ate sticky marshmallows….getting back to our cabins dropping wet, tired as heck and cold with sore feet since we hadn’t built up calluses yet.
I half expected to wake up and see them all, looking how they did years ago, playing four square in the basketball court.
As it is, I only see Muffy now, she’s the last one I know from that group, the others I haven’t seen in years.
It is hard, to get farther away from memories, especially ones that are so clear and cherished, with the realization that those times are never coming back.

Thanks! And yes, 8 years…..*sniffle* And yup, I’m studying to be a veterinarian–it’s been my goal since first grade, if not younger. Requires 3-4 years of undergrad, then another 4 years of vet school. And once I’m a year or two into vet school, my summers shrink drastically, as the program here only give you around a month and a half of summer vacation between second and third, and third and fourth year of vet school……*grumble* That’s going to suck. But it’ll all be worth it in the end, I’m sure.

I don’t even want to think about how in debt I’m going to be when I’m finished. *shudder*

So, I’m all done with school for the year! w00t!

My bioethics “final project” went well, I think. It was, in fact, a Law and Order episode that we watched, like the teacher had claimed, I just hadn’t been sure if he was joking or not.

So, anyway, we watched that, then answered some questions, including an essay…….I shall hop over to hot topics and some point (hopefully) and babble about it. HT, because given that it is closely related to a similar discussion that we just had on there that didn’t end so happily for some involved, I don’t think it would be good to start a conversation about it here.

Anyway, it involved some doctor guy who claimed to have found a genetic marker for homosexuality. If I forget, remind me to babble over on the HT thread, at some point…….Or don’t remind me, if you’d rather I forget.

I still have two weeks of school… Well, I’m doing better. I finished my science for the year, and Mom’s burned out, so I’m not doing german or spelling anymore. My writing assignment for the rest of the year is AWESOME, (I’m writing a speech, but I got to chose the topic, and the topic is really exciting me.) and the reading isn’t too bad. Math is math, but it’s better then it was. School’s not too bad right now. Yes, I’m homeschooled, for those wondering.

Oh, and Kai? Thanks for telling us all about the space shuttle! My co-op teacher asked a question about it in class today.

268~ I tried, but never did, while Connor (one of the other kids there) could find the most incredibly tiny ones that looked like grains of sand. Humph. I thought I found one once, but we concluded that it was, in fact, a very shark’s tooth-y rock. *sigh* Maybe someday…

Oh ow. I don’t feel very good. Tooth pulling this morning. I guess it went well. The laughing gas had absolutely no effect on me whatsoever, but being hooked up to the IV wasn’t as bad as I was worrying about, although my arm still hurts.
So does my mouth, and I’m still bleeding, ugh. Got rid of the gauze though, it’s nice not to be clamped down on a piece of fabric, but swallowing hurts like crazy and I feel like I’m gonna yank something out. *whimpers slightly* Me no likes.

I fainted several times on the way to and from my room, scaring mom to death I think. She’s been watching me like a hawk every time I move, which is good actually. Opening your eyes and being on the floor with no idea of how you got there isn’t very fun at all. Remind me never to get drunk or stoned.
I can walk around a little better now. Not quite as dizzy, and things aren’t tilting as much when I look at them, nor threatening to go completely black.
*whines*

And I’m missing a choir concert that I really wanted to go to. Or a movie at the library.

And my friend has just told me en has pie. *burrows under covers and wallows in self pity*

273- Laughing gas? Wow. I used to have this REALLY sort of violent dentist who decided I should have a loose tooth pulled because it was impeding the growth of the tooth under it!!? They didn’t give me chloroform, they just injected some local numbing stuffle, which just magnified the pain, and then yanked it out. I’ve since found a much nicer dentist.

275~ I had my wisdom teeth removed today. I was completely unconscious for the surgery (since the teeth hadn’t actually come in yet…), but when I woke up it really hurt. My lower lip was completely swollen and painful. Thankfully I can make faces again, with caution…..

Oh, Robert, I found an interesting coincidence a bit ago. Or is it just a coincidence? Do you, and your MA house’s animal, have anything to do with Heron’s formula, i.e., area equals the square root of s(s-a)(s-b)(s-c) where s is the semiperimeter of a triangle? I highly doubt those two things are unrelated.

Are potatoes supposed to be green? I know they generally aren’t but i was peeling some right now and there’s a layer of green below the skin. Not moldy green, a sort of yellowish green tone. And I’m kind of worried. Because everyone in our family ate the vichysoisse.

OH MY GOSH I am so excited!!! I had my first track meet yesterday afternoon (it would have been our 3rd, but the first two got canceled) and it was so awesome! I got first in my heat in the 100m, did pretty well for my first meet doing high jump (3′ 10″, and almost made 4′) and I jumped 12′ 5″ on long jump!!! My best EVER!!! I can’t wait ’till the results get posted for placement.

I had my last track meet on Wednesday – last for me, anyways, everybody else still has Prelims/Districts next week, but I’ll be away and won’t be able to attend that.

This was my first year doing track, and it was fairly fun..long jump is definitely my favorite event. (I also did the 100, 200, and 400) My current best is 12′ 9 3/4″ (at the last meet). I really want to break 13′, which I would have done last meet if I hadn’t scratched by a tiny bit the last two times.

But, that would require doing track in high school next year. I would really rather not, because they don’t have As and Bs anymore and I would have to compete with all of the tall girls instead of people my own size.

281~ No, they’re not. They turn that greenish hue when they’ve been exposed to sunlight. If it’s just a tiny bit I wouldn’t worry about it, but if they’re really colored probably scrap them. Remember, they are members of the nightshade family, so treat them with caution and always make sure they don’t get exposed to too much light.

Hello.
I am back, awake after the long day at state yesterday.
I’ll cut right to the chase: 4th in strings, 2nd in symphony.
To tell you the truth, I’m very disappointed. In strings, we did way better than last year and we still only got 4th. Last year we got 3rd. I’m disappointed by that most of all. I guess all the other orchestras got better, too.
Symphony I’m just mad about.
First, let me tell you the scoring system. In the performance category, each of the three judges scores the group out of one hundred points, for a total of three hundred points possible. In the sightreading section, one judge scores the group out of sixty points.
In sightreading, a group is given a seven minute time to go over the music. No playing is allowed during this time or else five points will be taken off.
Definition of “playing” is determined by the judge.
In this case, the judge was very, very strict about playing. Even accidentally dropping you bow onto your string will result in a loss of five points.
That’s exactly what happened in symphony sightreading.
Guess how many points seperated us from 1st place.
Four.
I’m really mad at the sightreading guy. I really hope that he never judges for the competition ever again.
But I shouldn’t be bitter. At least I know that we really did win.
I feel really down in the dumps because we did really well and we didn’t get the placing that I expected. Last year, I was shocked that we did so well in placings because I personally thought that we didn’t play so hot.
Every time I think of the fourth place trophy in strings, I chide myself becuse it’s way better than not getting a trophy at all. They announce the trophies in this order: 4th, 3rd, 2nd, 1st. I keep thinking of what it would be like to not hear your school called for the 4th 3rd and 2nd trophies, being absolutely sure that you won, and hearing another school’s name announced. That would be the most horrible thing imaginable.
Well, I’m going to stop this really long post now. No exclamation points this year, folks. Sorry.

I like the Chieftain’s Fireland tune. I’m trying to learn it on my violin but it goes WAY too fast and when I slow it down on Audacity it sounds like an out-of-tune cello. So far all I’ve succeeded in doing is annoying my family and immediate neighbors.

Last night I stayed up until midnight-thirty watching the season two finale of Doctor Who, and then cried my eyes out for another ten or fifteen minutes, at first because of the show, and then because I kept thinking of other similar endings. And then I woke up this morning with a headache and my eyes hurt.

Crying is very weird. I mean, honestly–when we experience strong emotion we exude salt water from our eyes. How do those link at all?

311- Doctor Who is a sci-fi TV show which started in the 60s and then went off the air in the 90s and then started up again in…2004? Anyway, it’s about this guy, called the Doctor, who’s the last of the Time Lords (or is it one word?) who travels around time and space in his…spaceship, for lack of a better word, which is called the TARDIS (Time And Relative Dimension In Space, I believe) and is shaped like a 60s telephone booth, saving the world/universe as necessary. The Doctor regenerates whenever he’s dying, so over the course of forty-odd years there’ve been 10 Doctors, and an 11th one next year. The Doctor also always has a companion, or several, who are just regular people who travel around with him and help him save the world/universe. Then there are the Daleks, who supposedly all died in the Time War (that’s where the Time Lords fought against the Daleks, and that’s why the Doctor’s the only Time Lord left), but who keep turning up and getting killed and turning up again.

It’s a really good show, You should watch it.
