  1. Did you know you can cure hangovers with bacon and bread? (No, I did not learn this from personal experience)

    1. Have to remember that one. So far the most successful cure I’ve found is to just go for a jog and sweat it out.

  2. Who is your favorite MuseBlogger?
If you could bring back one inactive MuseBlogger, who would it be?
What was the worst punishment you ever received?
Rosanne: Have you ever figured out your quest?

    1. Let’s see:

      • Favorite MBer: That’s like asking an anteater which was its favorite ant.
      • Inactive MBer: A tossup between Larry Gonick and Nancy Kangas.
      • Worst punishment: I don’t remember. I think I got away with almost everything bad I ever did. But it wasn’t much use, because of my hyperactive conscience.

  3. Anything, or everything?
    Why?
What’s the background on your computer?
If I were to insult you, (not that I would ever want to do that) would you post it? Assuming that it wasn’t inappropriate, of course.

  4. Browser: Recently switched back to Safari after a long spell of Firefox.

Quest: I still haven’t figured it out. I’ve got some questlets though. One is to at least get up on my knees on a surf board (in the surf). I’m going to the beach on Sunday for a week so this will be a good chance.

Pets: No pets currently aside from the spiders that roam freely through the house. And there’s also the neighbors’ cat that hangs out at our place all the time. I don’t have names for any of them.

Inactive MuseBlogger: I also enjoy it when the Muses themselves stop by. It’s been awhile since that’s happened.

Desktop backgrounds: If my laptop is attached to a display, the background is the dashboard of my recently departed car. Unlike my “pets,” the car had a name: The Woofmobile. It was a 1981 (or was it 1983?) Toyota Corolla. Its dashboard resembled the surface of Mars — a heavily cratered and creviced part of Mars.
If the laptop is unattached, the background is a close-up of roses from the garden set in front of a black-and-white print of Samuel Johnson and pals sitting around his table.

    Why?: Why not?

  6. Cloud computing: I like how it makes it possible to get to your “stuff” from any computer. That is really cool.
But it makes me nervous since said “stuff” would not be in my personal safekeeping. And I haven’t researched this at all … but it seems like such heavy reliance on the Internet would provide ever more opportunity for malicious hacking.

    2. yes, actually. I was also tempted to wear Roman sandals and a beach cover up made to look like a toga with “Veni, vidi, vici” on the back. My mom told me I would look like a freak and wouldn’t let me out of the house.
At school, we have a Roman banquet once a year. 6th graders (our school only goes up to sixth grade, so they are special or something like that) get to wear togas. 5th graders get to play slaves. Not optional, either. Sooo glad it’s only in fifth grade. Now as I am fast approaching 6th grade, I’m pondering whether or not it’ll be as fun as it seems.

    1. Oooh, ooh! This has nothing to do with using “pie” as a verb, but it is funny. Okay. So today at camp, we all wrote down a line from a song and then everyone drew one out of a hat and made a poem out of it. Sebastian’s was “His heart was made of knotted pine,” and Veronika (not me) thought it was “knotted pie!” The Kokonspiracy is taking over! :D

    1. I fed it William Carlos Williams’ poem about the red wheel barrow. Along the way it became: “White chicken in water for a shower of glass next to REDDOHOIRUBARO, dependent” and eventually reached equilibrium with “Glass REDDOHOIRUBARO, water is dependent on the shower beside the white chickens.”

      1. MuseBloggers should appreciate this: when I refreshed the page with the “translation,” I got this message, “Equilibrium found! But would it kill you to capitalize properly?” Guess they’d better take that discussion up with Mr. Williams.

  9. I’d never heard of Translation Party until now. Thanks for enlightening me. I just tried “The owl and the pussycat went to sea in a beautiful pea-green boat.” After a while I got the “it’s doubtful this phrase will ever reach equilibrium” message.
The last version was: “It is designed to ship a sea of green beans and cat owl.”

May the force be with you: The outcome is certainly surprising — at least for someone who knows no Japanese (like me).

My family reuses the milk bags because they are a convenient size to hold leftovers and pencils and stuff (not all in the same bag of course!)

    3. To add onto the list of milk packaging in the USA, you can also buy boxed milk, something along the lines of it doesn’t have to be refrigerated until opened? I’m fuzzy on the details, my sis apparently likes it better than the other milk she can get her hands on at her college–she says that the milk in that state tastes “weird”….

But in general, I’ve only ever seen plastic jugs/cartons of varying sizes.

Each bag contains a single portion, and people drink it directly out of the bag. Apparently, they are usually drunk at breakfast, and they’re sort of the Israeli version of the Starbucks latte. They’re also really good.

  17. GAPAs: request for information
I was published twice (I think) in Muse magazine, once in a letter (that I had originally sent to the gaboomba, actually – I think Robert forwarded it) and once in a Q&A. After looking through the site, I believe that the Q&A was in the May/June 2006 issue (why do we blush), but I can’t remember when the letter was published, and going through all my old issues is going to be tedious. Would the gaboomba happen to be archived somewhere? If I could find roughly when I posted it on there that might help narrow it down. I think that I was responding to an article on tricks the brain plays on the eyes; I remember something vaguely about light refracting off of fingernails.

Would you have any idea what I’m talking about / any place I could search to figure out what issue it would have been published in?

    1. It was almost certainly “I Want to Hold Your Hand,” since that was their first hit in the U.S. Yes, this GAPA thinks she can remember watching the Beatles’ appearance on the Ed Sullivan show and being annoyed because she couldn’t hear the band over all the screaming girls. “I would never be that silly,” I thought. It’s hard to trust my memory because I have pretty much the same reaction every time I see the clip. (To be honest, however, I can be credited with plenty of silliness, just not like that.) I also vaguely remember the excitement around the first U.S. concert, probably because we were living in the D.C. at the time. But most of my early acquaintance with Beatles songs came from watching the cartoon show.

  24. GAPAs,
I just returned from a two-week camping trip in Yosemite, and when we were backpacking in the High Sierras, there was a rule that you couldn’t have open fires above 9,600 feet. Do you know why they had that rule?

I was curious about that the entire trip, and I completely forgot to ask the ranger at the wilderness permit center.

    Pie 0
    Squid 0
  25. I’m not sure if this is right, but I suspect it’s because we have lots of problems with wildfires in California. When I was in New Mexico last year (in the Sangre de Cristo mountains) they were also really strict about that kind of thing, I don’t think they would even let people hike on certain trails because there’s too much danger of a fire starting, due to carelessness or arson (and a lot of fires in “fire season” are actually arson fires! ) I wish I could remember more, but they said the drought was really bad…maybe it’s the same in Yosemite?

    Pie 0
    Squid 0
    1. Really? I thought that originally, but I didn’t think that could be it, because, especially in that area, they have been setting prescribed fires to make up for the suppressed fire policy in the past. And why only over 9,600 feet?

      Pie 0
      Squid 0
  26. When my family was at Philmont (a Boy Scout ranch) in New Mexico, uh, 11-12 years ago, I think they had that rule, but when there was an ice storm, they broke it to keep the scouts who were hiking warm. I guess there wasn’t much of a fire-risk anymore.

    1. mas0n, when we created the Paleophytes threads, we did so because many long-time MBers were feeling lost with the influx of newcomers. As we explained on the New MuseBlog Experiment thread, we settled on the six-months requirement because “after six months on the blog, MBers know the ropes and have shown that they are likely to stick around for a while. By making a special place for those who have settled in, we hope to carve out a slightly slower, calmer environment for those who want it.” After further review of those purposes, it seemed to us that six months should mean six months of regular participation. Sorry, mas0n, for the confusion, but you will enjoy the MA Student Lounge and feel happier there once you’ve spent more time getting to know the other residents of MuseBlog.

In this case, I suppose proper identification would consist of his (1) letting us know by e-mail (gapa at musefanpage.com) that he plans to appear on MuseBlog and then (2) posting as “fireandhemlock1996’s dad” or a name that provides equivalent information.

I’m now living, for the first time in my life that I can remember, in a place that’s actually cold, and one thing I noticed was that every time I open a door to the outside, there’s this big gust of cold air that tries to hold the door shut. This is a somewhat urgent question. “Urgent” meaning I would like to know before monday (because my physics class is monday and I want to wow people).

I remember that there used to be a page on this site somewhere, where one could read a bunch of Q&A answers. One in particular stayed in my mind, as it was about Monty Python. I’m sure you’ve guessed it’s the question about the velocity of a swallow. I was wondering where I could find this answer. The question was brought up in my physics class (we watched the scene and everything) and I’m kind of curious about the answer.

    Best Regards,

    Kagcomix

    Pie 0
    Squid 0
    1. Kagcomix — Reposting our Q&A archives is still on my “to do” list, but here is the answer I gave:

This question is dangerous! In the movie Monty Python and the Holy Grail, anyone who gave the wrong answer was hurled off a bridge into a deep gorge. Well, no more! According to the Cambridge Encyclopedia of Ornithology, a European swallow flies at 9 meters per second, or 20 miles per hour. Of course, swallows don’t fly at the same speed all the time. They slow down before they land, and they can put on a short burst of speed to escape from hawks or other predators. The Audubon Society Encyclopedia of North American Birds reports that in 1930, the driver of a car in California noticed a barn swallow flying at 46 miles per hour. (American barn swallows are the same species as the European swallow.) I don’t know why that bird was in such a hurry, but my guess is that it was flying like mad to get away from the big metal monster chasing it down the highway.

(The answer refers to unladen swallows, of course.)

Too many “what if’s” to worry about, too many things that could go wrong. I made Photoshop brushes and Illustrator symbols from the vector graphics I drew for the Muse Academy seal and sometimes use them as a basis for images. Other times I draw them from scratch. Just depends on the situation. The current picture started with Illustrator symbols that I edited. I could “paint” them all onto a single page, if that’s what you’re asking.

  60. GAPAs, I have a question. I was reading one of Robert’s comments on Hot Topics 2009.5 which said, “One of the rules is that the answer to the question “How does X happen?” is not allowed to be “It just happens” or “It’s a miracle.” That’s not because scientists don’t believe in miracles — some do, some don’t. It’s because saying that something just happened or happened because of a miracle doesn’t explain it in a way that scientists consider useful and satisfying.” This made me think of something: what’s the deal with inertia? Do any of you have theories on why it works, or theories that you think are hogwash?

    Pie 0
    Squid 0
    1. I don’t know, and I don’t know enough about the topic to have any opinions about it. Maybe I’ll ask some physicists and print their answers in the Q&A column. (That reminds me — a deadline is coming up.)

    1) Who started MB? When? (Was it Robert?)
2)How did en get the idea to start MB? Why did they?

    Pie 0
    Squid 0
    1. Well, originally it was just the Muse Magazine Fan Page, started by Robert a number of years ago–late 2003 or early 2004, I believe. Part of the fan page was called the GABOOMBA, which stood for GAllery + guest BOOk + Message BoArd. Part of the GABOOMBA was a rudimentary discussion area. The way it worked was that people emailed their messages to Robert and Robert manually posted each message on the page. This lasted for 261 messages in total (which took a considerable amount of time, as the pace was much, much slower than it is today) when Robert unveiled an experimental new system known as MuseBlog. Under this new system Robert didn’t have to manually post each and every message, which made things much easier, I imagine. The system was a success and is still in use today.

Basically, Robert started it as a place for Muse fans to discuss the magazine and other Muserly things that went along with it.

However, when Balrogs attacked the site last year, the area that took the most damage was the Fan Page. Due to the terrible conspirings of the Fates, Robert was unable to restore the Fan Page or the GABOOMBA. This is why going to https://musefanpage.com/ redirects you to https://musefanpage.com/blog. Skeletory remnants of it can be found by adamant internet-searchers, but it may never be restored to its former glory. I have managed to salvage the whole of the Message Board so as to read its contents, but the entirety of the Muse Magazine Fan Page may be lost forever.

fireandhemlock1996, I can bang around on the piano enough to entertain myself. Some minor dabblings with guitar and tin whistle never went too far. Recently, I’ve been experimenting with a riq (a combination tambourine and drum) as I am a frustrated percussionist. I’ll attempt anything I can shake, rattle, or beat.

  63. Question that has no connection to anything whatsoever:

In the July/August 2002 issue of Muse, I noticed that you had printed an excerpt from a story entitled, “The Amazing Maurice and His Educated Rodents” (this was the Cat issue). Like, for instance, I’ve been very careful to avoid stating what specific state I’m going to college in, as once you know that, it would just be a hop skip and a jump to determine the actual college….And, well, the map shows what states people are in, and a much more precise region than just “I’m in such and such a state”…..Yeah. But how would it know where we are? I know that when I made my WordPress account I didn’t really put in any other information than my username, email and a password….as far as I recall anyway.

How does it decide who’s a member and who’s a visitor? I mean, I know I didn’t make an account until the paleo threads showed up, and even when I’m on a strange computer and forget to check them, sometimes I don’t bother singing in.

    1. It would know where you are based upon your IP address, and where it logs into the internet from. Or something like that–the same way that annoying personal ads on less reputable websites always know where you are: “So and so looking for a hot date in *******[town where you’re at.”

As for member/visitor, I’m guessing that if you’re currently logged into your MB account, it has you marked as member, if you’re not logged in, it probably marks you as visitor. So even if you’re on you’re computer, it would probably mark you as a visitor if you don’t sign into your account. That’s my guess, anyway.
