Random Thread: “Interesting Times,” Part 2

The next stop in our travels through China is a visit to Song Dynasty court painter Ma Yuan (c. 1160-1225). This is a lesser known version of his painting “Apricot Blossoms.”

    Lovely picture!

It’s ridiculously frustrating to try to talk about stuff that happened on MB in real life. A couple of my friends (literally two) know about this place, and so I can preface stories with “Remember MuseBlog? This was on MuseBlog.” Even with them, though, blognames are still incredibly awkward to use in stories. It’s worse when I’m trying to talk to someone who doesn’t know about the blog. Ever tried to tell a story about your friends Speller and Luna? Or Piggy, Ducky, Beavo? SudoRandom and RoseQuartz? Yeah, it’s difficult. (I don’t have a specific example in mind, I was just pulling names out of thin air.)

    • Spelluna says:

Well, I would think that “Luna” wouldn’t be too difficult to use in a story. I mean, of ’em all, it’s at least usable as a name without too much weirdness–other than getting confused with Luna Lovegood.

Luna is one of the few I can use without weirdness. Then I know the real names if a couple of you guys, and I can use those too. I use

Oh, I know what you mean. Sometimes I’ll just avoid confusion altogether (Especially when I’m trying to explain something to someone who doesn’t know about MB) by just saying, “I know this person that…” I mean, it’s easier than trying to say “RoseQuartz did this and then…” “What’s a RoseQuartz?” You can see where the confusion sets in. (By the way, RQ, I’m just using you as an example, not thinking of a specific situation.)

But yeah, I know what you mean. It’s also funny how many times I do think about MB in my real life, or how many times I can relate to it and yet no one else knows what I’m talking about.

Yesterday, I was heading next door to give the person that lives there her Twice as Tacky Glue back, and I kind of shouted that (above), and there was this older mailman that was walking up the steps too. He literally stared for a few minutes, and then backed down the stairs. He didn’t even put the mail in the mailbox!

Today I saw Percy Jackson on opening night with my two friends. My review:

Soccer starr was right, if you based the movie on the story of the book, it wasn’t as good at all. they left out one of my favourite scenes, and the beginning was odd. The setting/scenery was very good, though. In its own self, it was very well-done. The characters were nothing like what I imagined them as, except for Percy (whom I find extremely attractive, by the way.)

    Acting: B+
    Special Effects: A
Story (see above): based on the book: C+ | in its own self: A

Overall: A. I liked it a lot! I’d definitely reccomend seeing it.

Oh dear…..Enceladus and SudoR have become one. I’ll probably be confusing you now. Brilliant picture, Lady B! I love the little Muse symbols along the right hand side…..They look so very much like real Chinese (Japanese? Korean?) symbols. Utter flamablamablous pwnage.

    So, in other news:

This one girl I know, she’s also prevet, she and I just went to this Friday night thing on campus (free food and crafts–I like the former, she likes the latter). So it came up that she like Broadway music, right as we were leaving. Yup, that’s right. Cue the Luna manifestation of the Spelluna, the JB obsessed fangirl, trying to win another convert (original convert being the speller manifestation of the Spelluna). I commented on the way back to our dorms, that “You say you like Broadway music? Because there’s this one guy, he’s an actor/singer, and he sings a lot of broadway stuff. He’s not big here in the US, but he’s really big in the UK. He’s on a couple of BBC television programs.”

    Her: “I think you’ve mentioned him before…..”

Me: “Really?” (i’m quite sure I never have…..) “Well, anyway, I’ve got a whole bunch of his CDs, you should totally YouTube him, he’s go the most incredible voice. And he’s totally hot. Gay, but totally hot. [why the gayness matters, not sure, cuz it doesn’t, but I was starting to babble at this point]. He’s in his early 40s……o.0 I’m calling a guy in his 40s hot…..” [again, not sure about the last bit, I’ve got no problem, at least to you all, admitting that, but somehow I guess that’s different telling a fellow 19 year old that I think a 40 year old is hot]

Her: “Well, I guess you could think one [40 year old guy] is good looking. Just not as in you would want to go after him….”

    Me: *awkward pause* Ummm.

Her: *gets look like I’m weirding her out slightly* “Or maybe you would…..”

    Me: “Well…..”

Yeah. That was a bit awkward. She seemed to find the very idea of me being open to the possibility of going after any 40 year old guy (we’re talking JB! I mean, really.) totally disturbing….But I mean, really. JB? Oh, yeah. I don’t care he’s twice my age, I mean…..You know how gorgeous he is…….

yeah. And then I just went and hunted up a whole bunch of links on youtube and emailed ’em to her……She’s going to think I’ve gone mental. Although, really, she’s heard me go on about HP enough that my mental state really shouldn’t come as that much of a surprise…..

Oh, the avatars were easy. My other half mentioned we should get a Glory avatar (Buffy reference, here) for Spelluna, and not long later a post appeared on MB by her as Spelluna with a Glory avatar. I merely saved the image to my computer, set up a new gravatar account, and stuck it in as my avatar.

Yeah… My other half mentioned us being like Glorificus at some point, so it seemed right for our gravatar. I just Google imaged Glorificus, and presumably my other half stole it.

To give this some context, Glorificus is the villain in the fifth season of Buffy. She has two manifestations, and she has to steal people’s sanity in order to maintain her own. So the same name/avatar thing will be equivalent of stealing people’s sanity.

And I’m always surprised at Fridgey (Elias-Silver Something or whatever his name is now)’s avatar, as I don’t imagine him having a beard. Or a round face. Or being older.

Hmmmmm. I wonder if I should change my avatar now…..just because I haven’t for a while. Yes, I say how confusing it is, and then say I might go off and do it.

So I was cleaning out one of my drawers a few days ago and found some very old notes on Museblog: stuff that I, for whatever reason, had written down. I will faithfully reproduce them here, for future generations and the sake of reminiscing.
Teh first appears to be an inventory of all my weapons back during the First Pie War:
    stolen invention
    pie catapult
    frisbee pies
    rabid pies
    pie shield w/ robotic arm
    pie cannon
assorted flavor pies, quiches, tarts, and crumbles
    what I’m building (top secret)

I have no idea what I was building, though it might have been a pie-spaceship. Ditto for the invention that I stole.
The other is a Muse pledge of allegiance:
I pledge allegiance to the muse of the hot pink bunny empire of America,
and to the llamas, for which they stink, one awesome magazine,
    under pies, fuzzy and pink
with liberty and complete hyperness for…*splat*

I am fairly certain I did not write this, but rather copied someone else’s pledge done because I thought it was that awesome. Agreed? Though I probably would change America to Museica now…

He’s just awesome like that… and he has these boots, and they’re spiky all up and down the sides, and the have six or seven inch platforms on the bottom, and they’re really, really cool. So back to the point… his first name’s Keith, and his nickname’s Keiffer, and he’s so awesome that a just had to steal it… blah, blah, blah. He’s very weird, and a little bit gone… if you know what I mean, and his favourite food’s pizza and he loves chocolate milk. Just don’t ask me how I know all the more personal stuff… just take a wild guess.

The Seven Wonders of the World – Author Unknown

Junior high school students in Chicago were studying the Seven Wonders of the World. At the end of the lesson, the students were asked to list what they considered to be the Seven Wonders of the World. Though there was some disagreement, the following received the most votes:

    1. Egypt’s Great Pyramids
    2. The Taj Mahal in India
    3. The Grand Canyon in Arizona
    4. The Panama Canal
    5. The Empire State Building
    6. St. Peter’s Basilica
    7. China’s Great Wall

While gathering the votes, the teacher noted that one student, a quiet girl, hadn’t turned in her paper yet. So she asked the girl if she was having trouble with her list. The quiet girl replied, “Yes, a little. I couldn’t quite make up my mind because there were so many.” The teacher said, “Well, tell us what you have, and maybe we can help.”

The girl hesitated, then read, “I think the Seven Wonders of the World are:

    1. to touch…
    2. to taste…
    3. to see…
    4. to hear… (She hesitated a little, and then added…)
    5. to feel…
    6. to laugh…
    7. and to love.

The room was so quiet, you could have heard a pin drop.

May this story serve as a gentle reminder to all of us that the things we overlook as simple and ordinary are often the most wonderful – and we don’t have to travel anywhere special to experience them.

In February of 2007, I went to Philadephia with my parents to see the King Tut exhibition for my birthday. After we had visited the museum (The artifacts were amazing, by the way), my dad suggested that we visit Chinatown, because he’d read a newspaper in the hotel lobby that had said it was Chinese New Year. So I went with my dad to Chinatown, and we stopped into a restaurant to find out what was happening that day. The clerk lady looked at my father and said “Well, you know, we celebrate for quite a few days… but technically, the Chinese New Year was yesterday. You must have read yesterday’s paper, sir.”

No, no, no, no, no, no. We had originally thought to be a vengeance demon, on the suggestion of our speller half. But then as the both of us progressed in season 5 Buffy, our Luna half realized, after the discovery of the goddess Glorificus’s two separate physical manifestations, that we resembled a goddess more than a vengeance demon. Vengeance demons and goddesses are two extremely different creatures.

I have discovered the incredible freedom and restraint of an empty Text Edit page.

Full of freedom, since you can write anything on it. Any word can be put down, and turned into a story. Full of possibility.
And then you put down a word. Suddenly, the page that represented unlimited freedom is now restraining you. Thousands upon thousands of words cannot be the first word in the story anymore, since there already is one.
But the limits are comparatively small. You can keep going in a thousand million different ways. The word has opened up perhaps as many directions as it eliminated. And so you continue.
And as you keep going, the list of options shrinks and shrinks. Every word you add is destroying a thousand possibilities.
Perhaps that’s what writing is. Eliminating all the possibilities but one, turning that into a certainty.

…I’m not quite certain where that came from.
It might make a decent Muserology, if I could expand it enough…

I like my TW novel better (ZOMG, that was freakin’ awesome, I spent the entire plane flight laughing hysterically), but the DW novel was good, too.

Doctor Who release, I’ve been googling occasionally, sometime in the spring is all I’ve gotten.

TW, well, nobody knows yet if there’s even going to be a new season. Closest I know of, is FOX has gotten rights to make an American Torchwood (with RTD as writer), but I’m rather hoping that maybe this doesn’t come to anything.

And, come to think of it, given that my mother spends half her time trying to cure insane (or just generally messed up) people of their insanity through medicene and some chitchat, I sure hope she’s sane.

Well, nobody is like that (obsessional over a TV show, etc) until they one day are. There’s gotta be a first. It just hit your mother later in life.

American Torchwood: Yes, agreed. When I read that, my first thought was, “Dear god, I hope this is a joke and nobody is actually considering an American TW.” And then I googled it, learned it was not just somebody’s idea of a sick, sick joke, and promptly felt sick myself. And enraged. I’ve calmed down in the weeks since, but….the only way it could possibly be good is if it is not an actual remake, but, say, a spin-off of BBC’s TW. You know, a completely different, separate hub that was set up in the US.

Oh, Random Shoes. I don’t really remember what happened in that one, but I remember the name. *needs to rewatch TW*

    Lake by Czeslaw Milosz

    Maidenly lake, fathomless lake,
Stay as you were once, overgrown with rushes,
Idling with a reflected cloud, for my sake
Whom your shore no longer touches.

Your girl was always real to me.
Her bones lie in a city by the sea.
    Everything occurs too normally.
A unique love simply wears away.

Girl, hey, girl, we repose in an abyss.
The base of a skull, a rib, a pelvis,
Is it you? me? We are more than this.
No clock counts hours and years for us.

How could a creature, ephemeral, eternal,
Measure for me necessity and fate?
You are locked with me in a letter-crystal.
No matter that you’re not a living maid.

You’re technically supposed to use the right one for keys typed with the left hand, and the right one for keys typed with the right. What people do, though, probably depends on the person. I think my sister once said that she only uses the right one. Based upon the way I’m typing right this second, I’d say that I’m more or less using both: The one on the right for words typed with my left hand, the one on the left for words typed with my right hand. Like I”m supposed to. I think I’ve got a few exceptions to that, but I don’t feel like trying to type every different capital letter in such a way as to try and test what I do…..

I’m right handed. Of course, I play the cello, so my left hand gets used; it’s just for different things. My left hand doesn’t write like my right hand does, and my right hand dosn’t finger on the cello nearly as quickly as my left hand.

Also, I just noticed, but my right hand moves around a lot more when I’m typing… on the left only the fingers move but on the right, the wrist is held higher and the actual hand moves around. It must be the cello playing because the fingers on my left hand have learned to move independently from the palm while fingering, but in order to bow correctly the right hand’s fingers must move with the palm. Strange.

 Oh. How very weird. Because obviously I don’t have anything better to do (yeah, right), I decided to try out the whole mirror writing thing.

Writing normal with my right hand, while writing mirrored with my left, the left is rather sloppy, the right not quite so nice as normal. Writing mirrored with my left hand, while doing nothing with my right: An improvement.

Writing normal with my left, doing nothing with my right: Slightly worse than the left hand doing mirrored alone. Writing mirrored with my right doing nothing with my left, marginally better than my left handed mirror writing.

Then the weirdness: Writing normal with my left, while mirrored with my right, I got the best handwriting out of my left hand so far: It could almost pass for slightly messy good writing, albeit larger than I would normally write…..

Maybe that was just a fluke….Or maybe “Luna” is just incredibly easy to write with my left hand. “Michelle” had pretty serious failure throughout all variations with the left….

‘Kay. Upon trying mirror writing with just my right hand, I discovered that I can do it, slowly and thinking a bit, with occasional transitions to the side to make sure I’m doing something right. I only have to do it once, though.

Further report: With my left hand, mirrored, it isn’t hard, but it is messy. With both hands, either with a pen in my left and a pencil in my right, or vice versa, my right is neat and my left is messy. My left hand is neater with a pencil, except that I totally fail at left-handed mirrored Ps no matter what I write them with. I fail more with a pen, though. Trying with my right mirrored and my left normal results neither looking at all good, but both of them somewhat acceptable.
In a mirror my left hand mirrored writing looks slightly messy, but surprisingly good. My left and right at the same time, with left mirrored, is still messy, but up to a point is actually fairly neat. The point being the two Ps halfway through the sentence.

I made a couple of stupid mistakes, (Let my queen be taken by the same trick twice in a row, for example) but I managed to take all of the computer’s pieces except the king, and it wasn’t too hard after that.

So, today was an interesting day.

This morning, Mrs. M informed me that I was, indeed, going to go to the spelling bee . And she informed the whole class I was the only person on the entire team who got twenty out of twenty (chauffeur was a “bonus” word, I guess). J also got into the spelling bee, though I guess he must’ve not got everything right. Now he won’t shut up about it (surprise, surprise ). My friend C also got in. I don’t know about one of my other friends though, because she hadn’t had L.A. yet when we had a class together. So, anyway, I recieved a gigantonormous study packet with all these words in it, and I have no idea what half of them mean. And I didn’t know there really was such a thing as an aardwolf. Or an oxydactyl (Which is not a dinosaur, it means “having slender tapered digits”).
In social studies, it appears someone decided it would be amusing to color on Chauncey (the class bunny), because there is now a hot-pink spot on her back  I’m just hoping she’s not a HPB in diguise and the spot is where her furdye is wearing off. (I think she’s already bunnified “Rabbit Girl”)
This afternoon in orchestra, I started having to go to the bathroom. SInce I have NO time between orchestra and math, I decided I could just wait until between math and science. Then, near the end of class, they come over on the intercom and say there’s been some problems with the plumbing and we can’t use the water fountains or bathrooms until “further notice.” Great. On the way back from orchestra, we see the damage: one of the eighth-grade science classrooms is flooded with nasty sewer water, and they have a blowie thingy set up in the hall. They had to shut the water off to stop the flood. Later, I went back the same way to get some copies from the office for Mrs. J, and they had taken out all of the desks and stuff, and it was in the hall. In math, everyone was talking about it and how they were so thirsty and had to go to the bathroom. We all had ideas, like hiking to the other middle school to use their bathrooms, which is reasonable, since it’s only like a half-mile away or breaking into one of the houses across the street, which was… less so. Me and S and F also had an interesting conversation which included the topics of genetics, death, water, and drowning. So, as soon as I got home, I ran into the bathroom. Fortunately, it’s Friday, so they have the weekend to fix stuff. Actually, why is that fortunate? I’d like school to be cancelled.

GOOD MORNING, MB! RISE AND SHINE! THIS IS YOUR 5:30 WAKE-UP CALL! I AM IN THE AIRPORT NOW, AND MY FLIGHT LEAVES IN HALF AN HOUR! WE GOT HERE AT FIVE AFTER GETTING UP AT THREE WHICH WAS TOTALLY UNNECESSARY!
    Quick, pop quiz!
Question: Why does SudoRandom’s dad get him to the airport so early?
    Answer: I really don’t know!

As I said, we are IN the airport, and there is the hugest freaking cockroach you have ever seen, and it is crawling up my leg OH MY GOD really disgusting! Hooray!
So, since I got up so early this morning, I started having… hallucinations. I think it’s because I’m so EXCITED(!) about the upcoming KOKON!(!)(!)(!)(!)(!) They were pretty weird. I was sitting in a comfy chair ( :) ) and all of a sudden someone whispered my name. I whispered back, “Hello?” And the following conversation (with no-one) ensued:
    (me) Who’s there?
    (voice) It’s Enceladus.
    Enceladus? That’s you?
 Um… No. No. This is Silver Lining.
 Silver Lining? What are you doing here?
 Hop on my back! We’re breaking out of this hotel!
    …What?
 Yeah! Come on! Let’s go!

What does that mean? It means that SudoRandom is VERY glad he has free wifi at the airport, and will be getting home today! Also, SudoRandom LOVES DONUTS (!) and maybe we will get one, but all the stores at the airport are closed. (Probably because their dad gets them up at a reasonable hour. And because they don’t like cockroaches.) But we’ll be landing in Dallas to connect to Boston, and that will be at a good hour when the restaurants will (hopefully) be open, and SUDORANDOM CAN GET A DONUT AND A KIDS HOT CHOCOLATE WITH NO WHIPPED CREAM! (I find that when you get whipped cream, that’s basically all you get, don’t you?)

Lions and tiger and….No, wait, just tigers. [Also know as, Luna’s flammy weekend was even more flammy so far than ever anticipated….]

Yup, tigers. Late last night, I got an email from our prevet club president about a sick tiger at a tiger sanctuary in the state, and that the staff there wanted volunteers to help relieve them, as many had been there for over a day straight. Normally, I would’ve written this off as a “I would absolutely love to, but I don’t have a car–and it’s a good 3 hours away.” But this weekend? My sister was here, visiting. So after a bit of discussion, I sent an email requesting more info, like whether any specific time period/commitment was desired, and if my sister was welcome to accompany me. In case we did end up going, we got up early (8 am) the next morning (uh, this morning), after having only gotten to bed at maybe 1:30. Next morning, no email back. After some stressing over decision making (I do so hate decisions), I decided to give them a call to get some info. Short phone call later, it was established that, yes, my sis could come, and before we knew it we were on our way.

In the car, my sister practiced her voice pieces for her upcoming recital audtion type thingy, while I “spotted” her, letting her know when she missed words/notes. Unfortunately, the two pieces we started with were the two that she needed the most work with. The first 45 or so minutes was spent on a wordless piece, that unfortunately was comprised of numerous high notes. I thought I was going to go deaf……The next piece? When we reached the sanctuary, 3 hours after we left my dorm, we were still not done working through it–and most of the 3 hour return trip was spent on it, as well. However, she was already showing signs of significant improvement, but….Needless to say, I was sick of that song, and would have liked nothing more than to shred the sheet music for it…..

Once at the sanctuary, we were briefed on the tiger’s condition ([suspected] kidney failure). She was being kept in an enclosure indoors, sedated so that IV fluids could be administered. For the first little bit, we were just sitting there watching for signs of movement, which would indicate that she was waking up–twitching tail/paw–and monitoring her breathing. However, she was acting rather restless (significant twitching, although not actually awake) and it was decided that it was probably due to the presence of so many/new people. We were then given a tour of the sanctuary, and got to see the several other tigers that were there, and later helped to prepare food for their dinner.

Now, however, it had reached the point where the fluids they were administering had run out, at which point they were going to draw blood to send out to Antech. So we were all crowded into the enclosure, watching as they removed the vet wrap and white tape holding the IV catheter in place in her back leg. One of the other pre-vet people who had responded to the request for help (only two of us did so) asked if she could draw the blood–they were more than willing to let her.

At this point, squatting a foot away from the tiger, I was desperately craving to reach out and touch her, but didn’t really want to ask if I could–because I figured the answer would probably be “No, of course not”. So when we needed to roll her over a bit to get her other leg–the one without the catheter–out from under her so that they could get blood, I immediately jumped in to help, and so got to hold her one leg back out of the way while blood was drawn. So I was kneeling, right at the back side of a fully grown tiger, one hand on her “knee” (stifle), the other lower on her leg, near her paw, keeping her upper leg out of the way, so that the inside of her left leg was easily accessible for a blood draw.

My sis, unfortunately, had been given a video camera to record, so she couldn’t snap any photos of me. However, once we were done drawing blood, the guy in charge said that we could all go and take photos, so we were all taking turns kneeling next to her with a hand on her getting photos taken. And then the other prevet girl came back with a stethoscope and was listening to her heart/lungs, and when she was done I asked her if I could borrow the stethoscope and have a listen myself…..While I was doing so, she snapped some pictures of me (need to FB her so I can get my pics). I couldn’t hear the heart (and neither could the other girl or my sis)–I’ve never listened on something that big, just dogs and cats and some birds, like bald eagles and stuff–but I could hear her breathing. The exhale was like a soft growl/purr sound….It was really awesome.

I mean, me, right next to–and touching–a fully grown tiger. I touched a real, live tiger! Even if it was sedated…..

What care we now for wind and weather,
For we know that every inch is
    Sailing homeward to Mingulay.

Heave ya ho, boys, let her go boys,
Turn her head ’round into the weather,
Heave ya ho boys, let her go boys,
    Sailing homeward to Mingulay.

Wives and sweethearts on the banks
Or gazing seaward from the heather
Turn her round boys, and we’ll anchor
Where the sun sets on Mingulay.

Heave ya ho, boys, let her go boys,
Turn her head ’round into the weather,
Heave ya ho boys, let her go boys,
    Sailing homeward to Mingulay.

It strikes me there’s one more verse that I’m missing, but I can’t remember it. Oh well. But yes, I love that one.
    Hmm….other shanties…
I had Esiquibo River stuck in my head earlier, New York Girls is is always good, Patrick Street, Bully in the Alley, Paddy Doyle’s Boots, All for me Grog, Greenland Whale Fisheries, A-Roving, Homeward Bound, Don’t Forget Your Old Shipmate, Boney was a Warrior, Teh Thousand Miles Away…….there’s so many. I’ll have to post a list of some of the maritime CDs I have sometime. But even then, some I don’t have recordings of, just the music or I know them from hearing friends sing them.

[Long rant + slightly random story ahead. Read at your own risk. And a cookie to the GAPAs for having to moderate this comment. I swear, there is no vulgar language below.]

OK. So. Ugh. I hate homework. And tests. We have a huge Social Studies test tomorrow that determines a big part of our grade – all on US government and politics, with history like the Constitution and the Articles of Confederation. It bores me to tears. The only reason we have to learn all this stuff is because we’re “an American-style education, grounded in the Christian faith and respecting the spiritual lives of all”, yada yada yada. So even here in Hong Kong we have to learn all this stuff. Not only that, but we have a Geometry test tomorrow that is going to be the last test we take before the teacher signs our registration forms for 9th grade, deciding whether we go to Advanced Algebra or just Advanced Algebra Honours. They’re both one year ahead of the rest of our grade, but one is still…you know, better. And Advanced Algebra with “Honours” looks better for boarding school and university. He told us before that he was thinking of 8 people (out of our class of around 20) that he might consider sending only to Advanced Algebra (ie the bottom eight) and I sincerely hope I’m not one of those 8, though I have a sneaking suspicion that I am. Even though I did get onto the school Dragonmath team. (Long story – but it means I’m supposedly in the top 4 girls in our grade for math. Yeah, right. More like top 6, or 8. But the problem is there are more guys than girls in our math class, and only a few girls are good). So I really need to do well on this last test to improve my standing in his opinion. And I have to remember to justify EVERYTHING. I hate proofs, and (memorizing) theorems and postulates! They are incredibly annoying and useless for everything in life EXCEPT for Geometry class. Ah well. At least I got into Honours Science (Chemistry)! Yay!

Ahahaha. So, there is a story that I just thought of that is semi-related. We were having a high school information session (we got to skip math!) and they were talking about how in junior and senior years you get to explore different options and electives for areas you’re more interested in. They mentioned science as an example and asked us who might be interested in science. I was, but no one else raised their hand because it just…well…gets awkward sometimes and no one wants to volunteer. Anyway, my science teacher (who is AWESOME) was one of the teachers in the room and since I always ask questions in class she looked right at me when they asked that so I had no choice but to raise my hand. And then this other boy noticed and started to raise his hand too, maybe to get into her good books or something if it seemed like he was interested in science, but I don’t think he really was. OK, that was a huge digression from my rant, but whatever. (I tend to ramble. Sorry. I already warned you.)

Anyway, if you actually read all that, congratulations and here’s a cookie. [insert cookie here]. I know this really belongs on the Rants and Plaints thread, but I’m too lazy to move it now that I’ve typed it all. And I just wasted 10 minutes of my precious homework-and-test-studying time that I could have been using to memorize the Bill of Rights. And then at 10.30 my parents will be like ‘You have to go to bed now, you need your sleep.’ I know THAT, but I need my good grades (or even OK grades, I’m beyond caring) even more. Anyway. Yeah. Over and out.

O, the wonders of snow. I woke up this morning at 6:50, expecting to go to school. I take a shower and come out of the bathroom that I woke up for no reason. It’s a snow day.

Oh, wait, this is the “good” part.

So, I’m enjoying my free day, thinking about what I should do (whether or not I was actually going to do it.). My mom wants me to shovel, but my brother goes outside. This is right about when I made a couple of posts here. I wanted my little brother to get a bin from outside, so that I could go outside. I called and called…. He didn’t answer. After a few minutes, my Mom went to go outside to find him. I thought nothing of it. After another few minutes, she calls for me to come outside and look with her. She’s freaking out by now. I’m thinking, “Oh great, the dog ran away and he went after ’em… Now I have to too!”
So, we go up to the park that we live next to (on a mountain, may I add), and by this time my mom is totally flipping. I can skip to the point where I find his footprints and follow them to find him on a hill, holding the dog. Alright, mushy reunion time, lemme’ go inside now… My mom gets hold of the dog, and begins yelling at him.
I think I should set the scene for you. Snow is falling from the sky in clumps, and its thick enough not to let you see farther than a 75 yards or so. I live on a mountain, that you have to drive up to on the highway. There is a dirt road leading off of the highway, and at the end of that is my house. There is an entrance to a park a bit back down the highway, but it’s large enough to stretch to my house. We have a way to go through the woods and down a couple of roads to get there without going in the car. There is a golf course, which is huge. There is a road, then some trees, then the golf course. There are occasional openings and entrances. I went through one of them to find my little brother and the dog. So, my mom is yelling at him, and then he gets out of her grasp and runs. Runs away.
No big deal, he only went a short distance. I’ll catch him easy. I’ve done this before.
Except I hadn’t. This is probably the farthest he’s ever been. My little brother didn’t want to waste time by telling us, so that was why he left. Now, I’m walking towards the dog.
“Don’t chase him!” I’ve heard my mom say it a million times, but I was walking, because I had to keep up with him. I didn’t realize where he was going to take me.
He went down a hill, sniffed some trees, up a hill, into a patch of woods, out of that patch, down a hill, past a frozen pond, up a hill again. During the patches of wood, much of the “path” (the non-existent one that my dog decided to take) was narrow and thorny.

Oh, I forgot to tell you what I was wearing! Sneakers, jeans, a puffy north-face jacket, and no gloves. I didn’t know what I was getting into!

So, we probably went past another pond, and two other patches of woods. This golf course was definitely large, but we were zig-zagging. I kept saying “Treat!” or “Bad dog!” All of the things that would usually help. I probably had trekked through two miles of freezing terrain before I saw the huge hill. It was the end of the golf course, and I was extremely tired (adrenaline kept me going).

I know that if he goes up this mountain (I realized what it was as I got closer, because of the snow blocking the view), we could get impossibly far away from my house. I wouldn’t know how to get back; not because of direction, but because of the dog that I would have to take with me. After I caught my last glimpse of the golf course, I was in for it. I probably went about 50 yards into the woods, and then… and then I leaped onto him and grasped his collar. I had taken a rest before, so I wasn’t too tired, but I thought the moment could freeze for just a moment. So I sat there, knowing that when I got up he wouldn’t want to come with me. He went a few steps. Then, he lay down, and rolled over. He wouldn’t budge. I would pull him back home before he would stand up and come back with me.

Somehow he gets away from me, after he hears something and actually begins to walk with me. I think maybe he’ll just go back the way he came, but he strays. Then, I hear the voices of my little brother! We have him cornered now! The rest of the story isn’t too interesting. My little brother put a leash on him, and I found out my mom had been following me and my dog’s footsteps. My little brother found a short cut.

If you will reference the books and reading thread, I wasn’t quite ready for a night in the woods after reading that.

Today is a fast day, which means I can’t eat or drink. I didn’t realize this when I signed up to give my French speech on Vikings, so I gave it while I was tired and while my throat was dry. It still went pretty well. I talked about Viking runes and how they meant something, just like our letters.

Then I had Geometry. I like the class itself, but I don’t really like the people. They are all either a grade above me or incredibly annoying.

Rewind a bit to lunch. I got out Victory, and left it in a classroom about ten minutes later when the teacher kicked us out. This happens surprisingly often. We had just gotten kicked out from the library.

Okay, so, our most recent unit in PE was “So you think you can dance?” The final assignment was to get into groups of five and make a creative dance along with our chosen song. First of all, I was outnumbered, so we had to do “Sign” by the Brown-Eyed Girls (’tis a loathsome Korean band). The dance has a really complicated fan dance that goes along with it, and my group ignored me when I said we were supposed to make the dance up. Then one of our group members goes on a three-week vacation in Japan “to catch the last of the ski season” and comes back yesterday. So she didn’t know the dance. When we performed today in front of the entire 7th grade-plus parents and teachers- she was randomly twirling all over the stage and she knocked me somehow into a very strange cartwheel. My fan went flying, and it hit another group member B in the face, causing here to jerk backwards and crash into group member C, who got knocked into the mat at the back of the gym. A’argh!

I think they were underused or something, and after reading through some of the old Morphing Chameleon Threads, it seems like we have conversations that last just as long on the random threads, maybe because of the reply buttons? :? I don’t know, though, I’m just guessing.

Actually, it’s been almost a year since they stopped going up. I was going to post a comment about them in March mourning their absence, but you beat me to it!

I think they’re gone because most of the comments were spent trying to figure out what to talk about. And most of the conversations had on there could have been had on the random thread.

    Dear MB,

Luna has lost her mind. After working on her chemistry post-lab with her lab partner for 4 hours–er, well, maybe an hour fighting with excel to get a graph made of the data, then several hours of talking about anything under the sun (he talked about anime, I talked about Dr. Who–rambling about how it is my goal to watch all 700 or so episodes from Classic Who), a side branch of me twilight bashing (not sure how that came up), which ultimately deteriorated into the two of us playing Block Dude on our respective TI calculators, Luna accepted an invite to go see New Moon. Uh, what the cake? Somebody remind me why, after ranting about the horribleness of twilight, expressing that it’s not even worth the $1 it will cost to see on campus, I have now agreed to go watch it?????? Dangit, whichever one of you stole my mind, please return it!!!!!!!!!!!!!

    With love,
    Luna

P.S. Since we got almost nothing done, we now have to get together again tomorrow to finish up…..Luna is way too skilled at the art of procrastination.

Wait- I’ve actually read the book, and just so you know, Jacob is 16. Bella is 18, so if anyone’s a pedophile, it’s her.
Also, I’d be more inclined to cry when “Cedric” leaves Bella.

Who’s Cedric? Oh wait, I’m on Keiffer’s account – better change it. Mwhaha, now I can steal her vampire-loving email!!

I was doing some research today for History Day. I went to Mount Holyoke College and looked through her old papers and notes. The notes were especially cool because they were from her political economy classes before she became SuperSecretary. There were all these cool doodles..but some of them were quite creepy. For instance, the leg bone and the bride whose face was a giant Cyclops eye or something like that. Also, she had terrible handwriting. I could barely read it. But it was very, very cool to touch something that she wrote back in 1901.

I’ve read all the books (unfortunately), as well. I’m not referring to the Jacob/Bella relationship, I was referring to something that happens later in the series. But in case you haven’t read that book and are planning to read it, I’ll skip the spoilers.

I love playing Block Dude on my TI calculator! I’m addicted! (Even though I can’t seem to get past three or four levels…the other game, I forget what it’s called, is pretty fun too…where you get to move the little shapes around.)

Ok, sorry. Not to the point: WHAT THE HECK HOW COULD YOU DO THIS TO US WHY IN YOUR RIGHT MIND WOULD YOU SEE THAT THING!?!?!?!!

Kidding. Actually, like others said, now you’ll be able to insult it even more than usual.

Ummmmm……I’m guessing it’s because I’m trying out this new thing called be sociable, and not just hibernating in my room all the time.

I’ve got this feeling I’d totally chicken out….I don’t like drawing attention to myself.

Yes, my lab partner invited me. I don’t think he’s read the books, and I’m pretty sure he’s not seen the movies, although he seems to know a decent amount about the series, despite this, or maybe he’s just very talented at the “nod and smile and agree with anything Luna says while ranting”. I think my twilight bashing has sparked his curiosity about the series….

Possible, but I rather imagine there are a fair number of twilight fangirls likely to be in attendance. One can hope the fact that they are college age will be no significant squeeage when Jacob appears on screen half-naked, but…..Knowing the maturity level (very low) of my fellow college-goers, I doubt that this hope will come to pass.

Wow. I just finished watching HG2TG (the movie). It was pretty good actually, but that’s coming from someone who had to stop reading the book after a page about ballpoint pens that disappear into wormholes. I LOVED the “Thanks For All The Fish” song at the beginning. It was hysterical.

Luna: if I were you, I would definitely go, and I would scream obnoxious things freely. But that’s just me. ;)
