So…does anyone want to talk about the upcoming Percy Jackson movie? Who thinks it will be good? Who thinks it won’t be? Right now I just don’t know what to think about it, even though I’m so excited they’re making one! Sorry I don’t know if this was discussed on the last thread already but I want to bring it up anyway….
First post?
I think it’ll be good, as a movie that’s not a Percy Jackson.
Same here, actually. I don’t think it will be very similar to the book which will probably disappoint some fans, but as long as it’s a good movie I don’t mind. (Much.)
There’s going to be a Percy Jackson movie?!?
I don’t even want to think about it- Hollywood has gotten it’s claws into another one of my favorite books, and the end result will not be pretty.
Kyaaaaaaa! *watched preview today* They’ve RUINED it! SO BADLY! *kills them*
I watched the trailer, and it doesn’t look terrible. Even before I knew about the Percy Jackson movie I did think that it would have some potential. Now I’m not really sure because of the cast – I’m crossing my fingers that Chris Columbus will be able to pull through with them though.
I know! “pies Hollywood”
Has anyone seen District 9?
My dad saw it… he won’t let me.. but he said it was good!
He won’t let you?! Just because it’s R? I don’t believe that.
Come on, you should know from the last thread that my parents won’t let me watch ANY PG-13 and beyond, except for LOTR, JP, and (possibly) 9.
It’s not inappropriate at all besides every other word being the F-bomb.
Really? No gore? What? I’m planning on seeing that movie. Heard GREAT reviews.
cromwell’s exaggerating. The movie is also rated R for bloody violence. In fact, I checked out a “parental guide” for it, and it said that the review referenced content that was inappropriate for children to even read. 8 O
Plus, I CAN’T SEE 9!!! All because 2 gets put to a gruesome use by The Seamstress. Also-
I AM ABOUT TO POST A HUGE SPOILER FOR 9, SO IF ANYONE READING WANTS TO SEE THE MOVIE AND DOESN’T WANT TO HEAR ANY SPOILERS FROM THE END, EN SHOULD PROBABLY LOOK AWAY NOW.
5 of the 9 stichpunks die.
The only movie I’m looking forward to right now is The Road
I need to finish reading the book, actually.
THERE’S A BOOK!? The only reason I know what movie that is is that I was looking who was going to play the boy protagonist in the American Let the Right One In, and there were rumors of the kid playing the boy in The Road being the him.
What’s the name of it?
The book is called…………..The Road
It’s by Cormac McCarthy who is a master of language as far as I am concerned
For all of you who question Danny Elfman’s greatness, here is something I heard (for the first time, mind you) a couple days ago:
The Simp-SONS…
Dah-nuh-nuh-dun-dah-NAH-nun-duhn-dah-nah-NAH…
Ohhhhh…such brilliance.
Elfman is annoying.
More importantly, how have you not seen a Simpsons episode until a few days ago? For shame!
I’ve never seen one, ever.
You need a slapping, pronto.
Go to google videos and search for a full episode in streaming. It will enrich your life.
I mean it. I’m the most elitist intellectual on here, and I can assure you that the Simpsons are comedic genius.
I don’t like slappings, they’re painful.
I might watch it, some day. However, I have had the (mis)fortune of seeing a couple of Simpson episodes on TV in my younger years, and I really wasn’t all that impressed. I tend to find most so-called comedy to be more stupidity than amusement.
Most of the time I do too, but the Simpsons is just classic. Especially Itchy and Scratchy. Plus, Danny Elfman’s less annoying than Hans Zimmer! *flees from Hans Zimmer-loving MBers*
*dodges out of the way* I love the Simpsons! Really, I do! Please don
t slap me! *begs* Random fun fact: Bart finds out that Flanders is a huge beatles fan, and then repeats a line from I am the Walrus: yelloe matter custard drippin’ from a dead dog’s eye. Well, since that’s all I have for a *fun* fact, i might as well just hit submit.
“So-called comedy”? You mean cartoons? Get off of your high horse. You probably didn’t understand the jokes when you were younger.
BART: “I have to find a way to get my soul back from Milhouse!”
LISA: “You know, Pablo Neruda says that the soul-”
BART: “I am AWARE of the works of Pablo Neruda.”
Genius.
I think she means like Mr. Bean.
I am no longer allowed to watch The Simpsons. It’s inappropriate, apparently.
Actually, me neither. I’ve only watched 3 episodes, one of which was without my parents’ knowledge. (HTML gnome, if that smiley is wrong, please fix it. I have choklit handy. How much do you need?)
[It’s “oops” not “blush.” Thanks for the choklit. *nom* ~HTMLG]
Early Simpsons was great, but i feel like it’s declined a bit. Still better than Family Guy though, imho.
Actually, i think South Park is better than both, despite the rudeness and occasional dumb-as-something-that-would-be-deleted-by-the-GAPAs episodes
1- Yes, a Percy Jackson movie has potential…hmmm…
Isn’t anyone else psyched about 9?
Ah, I can’t wait to see it. Excellent reviews from everyone I know who’s seen it.
I don’t know much about it, but the commercials look good. Isn’t it coming out tomorrow?
YES IT IS!!!
We had such potential… such promise.
(Here could follow a commentary by the creators of G-Force.)
I really want to, but I dunno if I’ll get to see it.
NIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIINE!
Did anyone see 9 today? I didn’t… *homework/parents*
For me it’s *homework/parents fighting over whether it’s appropriate*
Really? What’s it rated…PG-13? How old are you, then?
12. See post 2.1.1.1.
The first time I remember watching an R-rated movie, I was 10 years old. My mom and gramma took me and my 12 year old sis to see The Patriot. I’m quite sure by that point I had probably seen countless PG-13 rated movies. My parents weren’t overly concerned about such things. Although, for the longest time I was banned from watching Beetle Juice, because when I was little, they had a little bit of one playing at the video store, and I had nightmares, so dad said I couldn’t watch it. Not that I had any intentions to do so, it was just a rule that stood for many, many, many years.
Of course, all horror movies still give me nightmares…..I ahve a very overactive imagination.
I’ve seen one and a half R-rated movies: The Matrix and half of Donnie Darko. I was fine with both of them, although I think I saw The Matrix at age 13 or 14 and Donnie Darko just a few weeks ago.
Horror movies I could never handle though. Even
“scary” scenes in regular movies freak me out.
I dunno… I’ve seen a couple of R movies… only some parts of some I didn’t really want to see…
Saw the Matrix (Isn’t that everyone’s first R?), it’s 2 sequels(which I loved),
Frost/Nixon, Milk, The fugitive, and Watchmen(Much more graphic then the Matrix, if some of you can believe it). I sorta crossed the border a while ago…
Still, PG-13 constitutes maybe scary-action film. I don’t think someone should not be allowed to see one because they’re 12. Well… have any movies given your parents evidence to not let you see 9, Muselover?
Not necessarily movies, but my dad looks at the IMDb parental guides. He said 9 looked pretty grim, but it’s Tim Burton(who PWNS)! *hint for alter ego, hint, hint, hint* What did he expect? Ah well, I guess it’s still possible…
SFTDP *another alter ego hint*
My dad says I could probably watch all except the shoot-up scene in Matrix.
Yep. Then again, those scenes are so unrealistic… The first Matrix(as far as I remember it) wasn’t that gory. I mean, sure people bleed all over the place and get a little charred, but it’s so unrealistic and just doesn’t compare (in terms of the traumatizing-o-meter) to other movies.
I think the main reasons it’s rated PG-13 is because of (supposedly – I don’t know for sure) swear words in the theme song, creepy machines that would give youngsters (5 or 6 year olds) the willies, and a bunch of fighting between said machines and a group of rag dolls.
The theme song doesn’t have any swear words, but the robots have been said to literally inspire nightmares.
Horror movies ALWAYS give me nightmares for weeks afterwords too. I know this sounds extremely crazy, (Especially since it’s SUPPOSED to be a comedy!!!) but I watched Pink Panther (The first one) in fourth grade and I couldn’t sleep for weeks afterwords. It’s not like I wasn’t mature enough to watch it, I just have a majorly ginormous imagination and can’t stop thinking about tiny little things, even if they’re not even supposed to be crazy. Creepy stories scare me too, but that’s another story. Now I try to avoid scary movies as much as possible, but of course nothing is completely avoidable…
I just saw the Aladin trailer and it looks like they don’t follow the storyline. But I don’t think the movie will be that much of a disappointment (not like Eragon).
1- What Percy Jackson is a movie now? Why does Hollywood go for the best books and make the worst movies?
The movie (The Lightning Theif) will be coming out in February 2010. I was simply asking what people’s expectations and thought of it are, even though I know it’s a little premature. They’ve only released one trailer and an incomplete cast list.
9 SPOILER 9 WARNING 9 SPOILER WARNING 9 SPOILER WARNING 9 SPOILER WARNING 9 SPOILER WARNING 9 SPOILER WARNING 9 SPOILER WARNING.
Tim Burton + post-apocalyptic world + adorable dolls + Halloween-style machines + small touch of magic = THE BEST ANIMATED FILM SINCE THE NIGHTMARE BEFORE CHRISTMAS (with the possible exception of Coraline)!
Only three things I didn’t really like:
1. It was a lot less scarier than I thought it was going to be. While I admit there were some “jump in your seat” scenes, they were nothing you wouldn’t find in a PG movie.
2. Half of the dolls died! I mean, seriously, that’s about a third of the characters!
3. A little bit too short.
I wouldn’t not like it because of #1! Your review could win points with my parents! THANK YOU, I-MAN!
You’re welcome
Just keep in mind – I did say PG would have been better instead of PG-13, but that doesn’t mean there will be absolutely no scare at all.
It can’t be creepier than Coraline, can it?
Oh goodness, no. I haven’t seen Coraline, but it looks much creepier.
I think the whole reason it’s rated PG-13 is because Timur Bekmambetov (there’s an earful) thought that as long as the characters are dolls, he could mutilate them as much as he wanted.
But they didn’t really get mutilated all that much. I mean, sure, some of them got their souls sucked out, but it wasn’t in a violent way or anything.
But they do get sliced up and skewered and stuff like that.
9 looks too scary for me. I want to see that new Disney movie, “The Princess and the Frog.” It has hand-drawn animation – the first hand-animated movie in years!!
Did anyone see “Julie and Julia”?
10- I love it when half the characters die!
Watching the new Bleak House. I don’t know… Well, I mean, it’s obviously wonderful, and they kept a lot of characters that the first series discarded, which is great. But they change stuff around a lot.
SPOOOOOILLLLERSSSS BLEAK HOUSE 2005 SERIES SPOILERSS

Some of that is for the better; Mr Jarndyce and Mr Woodcourt are both much more obviously in love with Esther, for example. I’ve read the book since seeing the first miniseries, so perhaps that has something to do with my this-isn’t-quite-right feel–I’m sure it does. And yet…there are so many characters that just aren’t as potent as they ought to be. Richard, for one. Mr. Skimpole, annoying though he be. Mr Snagsby, the Reverend Chadband (and what on earth happened to Mr Snagsby’s little woman?), Boythorn, Inspector Bucket, the Jellybys (all of them), old Mr. Turveydrop, Gridley, even Sir Leicester…I mean, they weren’t all perfect in the first miniseries either, but like I said, I’ve read the book since then.
I am also rather disappointed that the Bagnets don’t make an appearance. But ah well. I suppose if I want a perfect Bleak House, I’ll have to make it myself.
Also, I have to say that I have always been a bit disappointed with Esther’s disfigurement. In the first series, she had a lot of scars, but they were all so small and close together that she looked pretty much the same as before, just a little more…pitted. In the new one, the scars are much more obvious, but there aren’t nearly as many of them, and she still doesn’t look that bad. Surely if she had really survived smallpox, she would have looked dreadful? I’ve looked at pictures of smallpox, and it’s not a pretty sight.
I can’t get Welcome Home out of my head! And I just found out how inappropriate it is!
Coheed & Cambria are amazing. What’s so inappropriate about that song?
Uh, they say the F-word? Plus it’s all about someone’s rejection of God.
I know this is late, but who liked the latest Harry Potter movie? I didn’t think it was the best one, but I can’t wait for the last one. I am sad at the same time.
There is a thread that’s completely dedicated to the latest Harry Potter. The link is below:
https://musefanpage.com/blog/?p=3431
I just saw Pee-Wee for the first time, and now I want Large Marge as my avatar…
Cloudy with a chance of meatballs looks amazing. Watching the trailer reminded me of how much I loved the book.
THe trailers make the movie look…completely different from the book. I loved the book too, but I don’t think I’m going to go see the movie.
My mom’s only taking us to see it because my 6-year-old sister wants to.
I don’t want to see that movie, because it really bothers me when they wonderful children’s books such as that and Where the Wild Things Are and turn them into movies that aren’t even rated G.
But Wild Things looks really good, unlike Cloudy.
*giggle* Does anyone else think that Abigail Breslin being in Zombieland is funny?
17–Yes.
I saw Fame the other day with my friend, and it was good. Fabulous music and dance scenes. Have any of you guys seen it yet?
**SPOILER FAME SPOILER FAME SPOILER FAME SPOILER FAME SPOILER FAME SPOILER FAME SPOILER.**
It was really scary when Kevin tried to commit suicide. I was so terrified he was actually going to do that.
I’m watching Disturbia on TV with my little brother. I probably shouldn’t watch it at all… My little brother will probably handle it better than I will. It’s actually pretty funny right now.
SFTDP SPOILERSPOILERBUTNOTREALLYFORDISTURBIABUTI’LLPUTTHISWARNINGUPJUSTINCASE!
IF THAT GUY MYSTERIOUSLY APPEARS STARING AT THEM ONE MORE TIME I’M GONNA’ FLIP!!!! Oh. My. God. Ron left his phone in the guy’s car. He has to go back. This movie just digs under my skin… I won’t be sleeping tonight.
Good News for Looking Glass Wars Fans!
The writer of those books is
A: Writing A Third Books
B: Writing A Screenplay! Yay! No people who haven’t read the book ruining it in a movie! Yay!
I just saw Coraline this week, and it was AMAZING (although very creepy)!
Favorite Scenes:
-The scene where Coraline tries to walk out of the Other World (I thought it was better than in the book)
-The set of scenes where she tries to find the ghosts’ eyes
-All the scenes with the real Wybie
-The final battle at the well
I FINALLY saw Attack of the Clones, and let me tell you, I was disappointed. Not that I had high expectations of it in the first place, but it was just phenomenally bad. Here is my assessment of the actors and whether they can act.
Hayden: Nope
Natalie: Nope (sorry, Portman-lovers)
Ewan: Amateurish
Samuel: Yeah
Frank: Kind of lost his touch
Christopher: Best actor in the movie
There you have it. May I add that there was no cohesive storyline throughout the movie?
Has anybody seen Across the Universe? I haven’t, and I really don’t want to for two reasons:
1. I can’t stand 3-hour emotional love flicks. I’m sorry, but I just can’t.
2. Biggest. Most crap. Beatles. Ripoff. EVER. Need I say more?
I’ve not seen it, but I’ve heard it’s good. That is to say, one of the vet’s I work for recommended it to the 15 year old girl who was volunteering over the summer, after she mentioned she like Beatles music. No clue if it’s any good, not particularly interested, myself, but…..
See – if it weren’t so emotional, or such a huge Beatles rip-off, I might actually like it. Unfortunately, I just listened to five songs from the soundtrack:
-Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds
-With a little help from my Friends
-Dear Prudence
-I Am the Walrus
-Come Together
And guess what? Compared to the originals, they were all completely butchered (with the exception of WALHFMF, which they didn’t butcher quite so bad).
I haven’t seen it, but we did an abridged play version of it at camp, and I didn’t think it was so bad. It was only an hour though, and it would probably be too long at three hours.
My homeroom teacher saw Where the Wild Things Are, and she said it was amazing. Which is good, because I was worried. Apparently, the director is so good he actually gave the movie a PLOT, and kept it “every bit as wild as the book.” ((Quote from Maurice Sendak).
So, movie to see.
Wait a sec… I thought it wasn’t supposed to come out until October 16 :?.
That reminds me of the time when I watched Ice age 2 at school even though it was only in movie theaters so far. Especially because the teacher was very strict and not the sort of person you’d think of as illegally downloading things . It was probably legal but still quite amusing.
She got an early premiere.
My brother got to see Kung Fu Panda in school one time while it was only in theaters, because one of his teachers also works at an airport and found one of the earli-ish versions and got to keep it.
I watched a movie today called He Loves Me, He Loves Me Not starring Audrey Tautou. It was so good and so creepy, especially the ending. SPOILER SPOILER SPOILER SPOILER SPOILER SPOILER SPOILER WARNING. SPOILER SPOILER SPOILER SPOILER SPOILER SPOILER SPOILER WARNING. SPOILER SPOILER SPOILER SPOILER SPOILER SPOILER SPOILER WARNING. SPOILER SPOILER SPOILER SPOILER SPOILER SPOILER SPOILER WARNING. It starts out with this young college girl (Tautou) who is in love with this middle-aged man and they’re having an affair, but he starts to not return calls and he dumps her. She’s distraught and tries to commit suicide. The movie rewinds to the beginning and it’s told from the man’s point of view, and it turns out that she’s stalking him and driving a wedge in his marriage and ruining his career. Long story short, he figures out it’s her and tells her that he doesn’t know her and doesn’t love her, and she tries to kill him. He goes to the hospital, recovers, and he and his wife have a family and a happy life. She is taken to a mental institution, and after several years she’s been good and said that she made up a fantasy and all that, they let her go. As they’re cleaning out her room, they push aside a cabinet and find a full portrait of the man she was stalking, made entirely of all the pills she supposedly had been taking. It’s really brilliant how in the first part you’re on the girl’s side but then when you see it from the man’s perspective things completely change.
Has anybody else seen the trailer for Alice in Wonderland? I think it looks pretty good except for the plot – Alice should not be 10 years old, and combining Wonderland and the Jabberwocky is a disaster (in the movie, not in the real world) just waiting to happen.
Has anyone else seen the movie Amelie? It’s a great movie. We’re watching it in French class right now. It has a really interesting style. There’s a lot of narration. For example, whenever you meet a character, the narrator explains what the character likes and dislikes.
My class is planning on watching The Christmas Carol once it comes out because we’re reading it in English. It’ll be interesting to see it in the animated version, although I’m sure it’s been completely Disney-ified.
Or rather, Zemeckis-fied.
Has anybody seen The Vampire’s Assistant or The Men Who Stare at Goats yet? They both look really good.
I just saw Apollo 13. I loved it.
I am going to go see a movie on Thanksgiving but I don’t really know what’s in theatres other than new moon *barfs under table*. Does anyone have any suggestions? I’m trying to stay away from romance, horror or shoot-em-up movies, and I will have to see it with either Mom, Dad, or sister. *wishes HBP was still in theatres even though they buchered it*
2012 is pretty good. I mean, I don’t really buy a lot of the things that were happening as a result of all the stuff, but…..It wasn’t a bad movie, if you suspend a bit of disbelief (as is the case with most disaster movies, really).
speller — I love Amelie! My brother apparently likes it more than me though because he took it with him to college so I can’t watch it again. I loved the gnome….
Audrey Tautou is in Coco Before Chanel, which I would like to see if it’s still out…. She was also in the Da Vinci Code, I think.
Marfwarrior — well The Road comes out on Wednesday but I don’t know if that’s really Thanksgiving fare. There’s The Fantastic Mr. Fox, a stop motion film that looks interesting…based on a book by roald dahl.
If Amelia is still playing near you, there’s always that. It’s about Amelia Earhart .I haven’t seen it yet but if my math teacher is to be believed it was pretty good
The movie season is just getting started if you ask me. I’m looking forward to Broken Embraces, I hope it plays somewhere nearby…
Yay! It’s an awesome movie. Our teacher had us watch some sections without English subtitles, which was interesting. I never realized they talked so fast.
Fantastic Mr. Fox was hilarious and kept the same spirit as the book. I highly recommend it to Wes Anderson fans, Roald Dahl fans, and anyone just looking for a great movie to watch.
Two of my sister’s roommates just got back from watching twilight…..I am quite pleased to hear that they weren’t too impressed. THey seem to be in agreement that Bella is annoying, Edward not hot and definitely creepy, Jacob they seemed to be ok with when he’s “normal”……. It’s so nice some people remain sane.
New Moon wasn’t horrible… It was much better than Twilight (if that means anything). The director was better (I loved The Golden Compass).
Everyone’s been talking about New Moon. Apparently it’s better than Twilight like fishy said, but still not enough to convince me to see it. I guess I might if the opportunity comes up just for curiosity purposes, but not if the girls will be screaming every time Taylor Lautner or whatever the cake his name is comes on the screen. (Although fine, I did scream when I saw the Percy Jackson trailer when I was at the movie theater for Harry Potter 6.)
Well, given as from what I’ve heard, Taylor whatever (the guy who plays Jacob) is shirtless in almost every scene he’s in……I think the girls will be screaming whenever he comes on screen. Not to mention from things I’ve read online, everybody in every movie theatre viewing had all the girls screaming whenever he came on screen.
Personally, though, while I might consider watching it if I were extremely bored (and had absolutely nothing better to do), I would definitely not pay to go see it in the theatre. I mean, pay good money to see a movie based off of a crappy book? Nuh-uh, HBP was hardly worth the money it cost to go see it in the theatre, and I wasn’t even paying (my parents were). And HP at least has good starting material.
My mom won’t let me see it
37–Why not?
Concerning New Moon: Best to go later, when there aren’t so many screaming girls. I heard it was pretty good too, but I figure it would be hard to be worse than Twilight. It might still be fun to see.
you guys just have to take new moon for what it is: an adaptation of a really terrible book. if you go for the lulz and don’t take it seriously then it’s fun but if you sit there going GOD THIS IS TERRIBLE there’s no point.
i feel like crap contributing to smeyer’s overflowing coffers since the book and movie have so many terrible messages…but on the other hand it’s pretty hilarious.
I might watch it for the lulz someday, but I’m not paying money for it, for various reasons–partly I don’t want to give meyer any money, and partly I just don’t want to spend money on something that, most likely, I’ll only be able to think “GOD THIS IS TERRIBLE” the whole time I’m watching it…….
oh yeah, I mean I’m in the same position, and I definitely don’t want to see it surrounded by girls whose (apparently) ideal relationship involves stalking :/ seeing it with a friend who shares your views is helpful, though that would also involve paying for it.
Has anyone seen Les Choristes? It’s a good French, slightly predictable, but still very good. The singing/soundtrack is excellent and Jean-Baptiste Maunier has an AMAZING voice.
I liked the Twilight movie better than the book…I want to see New Moon for this reason. It amuses me when movies are terrible. But I don’t think New Moon will be that bad
I saw New Moon today! I read the first twilight book and thought it was (deleted). So New Moon was way better than I expected. Parts of it were funny. It was almost good. And Jacob and Carlisle are really hot.
CARLISLE?! DISAGREEMENT!
I saw it last night. I didn’t like it! Not enough romance. I was waiting for it to end. And Bella’s an IDIOT for not choosing Jacob! And it’s dumb that he turns into a werewolf *goes and sulks in corner*
And I wouldn’t think Edward was good-looking if he was the last guy on earth. Yes, she should have chosen Jacob!
I’m just about to watch Manos: The Hands of Fate, which is widely acknowledged to be the worst movie ever made. I’d better brace myself. Then again, I’ve got the MST3K gang to spice it up, so I might be too busy laughing to notice how bad it is.
SFTDP
I’m going to go see Avatar on Friday. (Or maybe Saturday.) Has anyone seen it yet? It looks AWESOME.
I can’t wait to see Avatar.
Does anyone know exactly which stories of Sherlock Holmes that the new movie is based off of? I would really appreciate it, because I can’t tell from what I see. I have a habit of reading the book before the movie.
Probably none, considering that the writers put magic into it. *grumble grumble grumble*
That sounds frustrating to Sherlock Holmes fans…
Ew.
Define “magic” – is it magic in the everyday sense (like Harry Potter), or a one-time thing (some sort of ritual, for example)?
It seems like it’s definitely out of the ordinary for the setting (books of forbidden lore, sinister rituals, etc.)
From what I read, the antagonist uses magic to manipulate people. He wants to rule the world. I don’t know just how important the magic is, though. Has anyone seen it?
OK…just read the Wiki page. It says that the antagonist guy is a member of a secret society (very Sherlock Holmes) and at the end, Holmes has scientific explanations for everything that happened, which makes the magic only slightly less irritating. The explaining everything at the end is possibly the WORST plot device I can think of, as bad or worse than just leaving the magic to be magic.
That still doesn’t answer my question: is the magic an everyday kind of thing (like Harry Potter) or is it some kind of ancient, “nobody’s-used-this-in-one-thousand-years” stuff? Because if it’s the latter, well…
WHAAAAT???
I knew it was going to be OFF, just from the trailers–they have Holmes ALL wrong–but not THAT off! My god…
I’m going to go see it anyways…and pretend desperately that it isn’t really Sherlock Holmes at all, they’re just using his name. But geez.
*pops in* *decides to be really random and 1. pretend she hasn’t technically disappeared from the blog and 2. frequents this thread* That Sherlock Holmes movie….do not talk to me about the Sherlock Holmes movie. Just… so….. incredibly…. stupid. I wouldn’t even really care, because I don’t hold the original stories to be exactly great literature, but they are classics, and a lot of the people who are going to see the movie are peopled who’ve never read the stories, and then Sherlock Holmes is going to be, to them, yet another action movie guy. I haven’t actually seen any of the trailers, but my friend told me about them, and was all excited: “So Sherlock Holmes has a little hammer, and this big guy has a big hammer…” Oh. My. God. *goes off and whacks head against wall* People just can’t leave the classics alone, can they….
[/rant] Um….yeah. Anyway. That’s my opinion. Please read the stories first, Fishy. Any of them will do, just read them.
Well, while I was being Jewish today, I did the typical Jewish thing of going to the movies (although I did not eat Chinese food) and saw Avatar. It was very good. I mean, I thought it would just be one of those movies that my parents drag me to, but it was really worth watching.
I don’t like how the actor who plays Percy Jackson looks. I pictured Percy as a bit younger, a little more innocent, and with a little less hair styling. Never mind on the age; it’s the hair that ruins it…
YES!!!!!! None of my friends outside of here agree with me. And I always thought of Annabeth as a blonde.
She IS blond (see comment 52.1.1 for the complete rant)
Ha! I thought you were Alice for a second with your icon… Wait, you agree about the hair? The innocence? Age? All of the above?
I don’t really mind his hair…it’s cute at least. But definitely not Percy at all, it looks too perfect and Hollywood-ish.
Has anyone seen Avatar or Sherlock Holmes yet? They both look really good.
Avatar PWNed! I can’t believe it got beaten by Sherlock in the BO.
I have a feeling it was for two reasons:
1. The basic plot of Avatar sounds rather suspiciously like District 9, which was released on DVD very recently.
2. Something to do with a combination of Sherlock Holmes (and the fact that the character died on Christmas day) and a Christmas day release.
I think it also had to do with the fact that some people (such as myself) are boycotting “Avatar” since it’s a caking waste of money with the storyline from Pocahontas combined with the visuals from Star Trek, but with more money wasted.
Such a freaking terrible movie.
yeah the storyline was pretty terrible, self congratulatory and vaguely racist depending on how you look at it. I thought the visual effects were cool but nothing more, definitely not “game changing” :/ also i felt like all the animals were basically dinosaurs or normal earth animals with extra legs.
In my opinion, it used a ton of old ideas, but it used them all in entirely new ways. It ended up as an enjoyable movie that I would definitely get on DVD.
48-The whole cast seems horribly wrong, especially Annabeth.
49- I saw the trailer to Sherlock Homes and was instantly robbed of any desire to see it. Holmes’ rafinesse, his calm, the distinct style… all turned into some corny action film. Avatar- I tried to read an article on it, but it bored me to tears. Okay, so awesomely animated blue people are running around. I just don’t “get” the plot.
Annabeth didn’t seem bad to me…
They put MAGIC into Sherlock Holmes? *shudders*
I read the summary on Wikipedia. They didn’t. They put Holmes debunking magic into it.
I see!
We watched the trailer to Percy Jackson in Latin class on the SMARTboard (mythology and culture are part of the curriculum), and it was absolutely awful. HOW can it be acceptable to make all of the actors 20 or so, Annabeth BRUNETTE, Grover is muscular, with a complete lack of pimples, beard, and he’s “cool.” They completely butchered Annabeth! (who I’m really sensitive about because she’s my favorite) Not to mention the other characters, and there’s absolutely nothing Percy-esque about the actor chosen to play him, he seems arrogant and proud of the way he is, not the misfit with a complete lack of confidence he starts out as. Everyone is way too…cool. For crying out loud, Annabeth’s a geek! Grover has barely hit puberty! Percy is a misfit! Did ANY of the people making the movie actually read the books?!?! *fury*
I don’t get it! What is so wrong with Annabeth!? Her hair doesn’t really matter to me, because I didn’t even remember her hair color from the book.
I wouldn’t mind so much either, but she is distinctly described as a blond – would you be able to deal with a redheaded Harry Potter? In fact, her blond-ness is the first description we get of her: “a pretty girl, her blond hair curled like a princess’s.” It’s not like one of those minor characters who are barely described and you don’t may much notice to in the books (We have no idea what Professor Vector from Harry Potter looks like, although I don’t think Vector makes an appearance in the movies, so that’s not a very good example…)
Also, I’m sick of movies that encourage the stereotype that blond people (especially females) are complete airheads with no interest in intellectual pursuits, and I think an Annabeth that’s true to the book would be a nice change. Actually, a girl at my school did her science fair project on how someone’s hair color influences your perception of their intelligence. I only passed by it (I was judging, so I couldn’t wander and look at the projects I wanted to see) so I don’t know what the results were, but anyway…
I have to stop ranting – Am I coming off as a bit stubborn here? And have you guessed my coloring yet?
sorry – may as in “you don’t may much notice to in the books” is supposed to be “pay” SFTDP
I’m not a huge Percy Jackson fan, so I suppose I don’t pay much attention to detail. You are definitely right for comparing it to Harry Potter; it gives me a perspective to a devote Percy-Jackson fan (Soccerstarr!). They could have just died her hair; she would look good as a blonde!
I feel similarly. I mean, “dumb blond” is still used as an occasional insult at my school (As disgusting as I find it) and the fact that Annabeth is one of the smartest people in the books she really represents a change from the usual blond media. Hasn’t people noticed how the bullies in those cliche teen romance films are probably like 98% blond? The fact that the smartest blond girl is being “taken over” by a brunette is what really upsets me.
(And I have brown hair.)
52 – Oh yes, we watched the trailer in school too! (But we watched it in Sci class actually – my teacher is a HUGE fan, and we’re often very random…she wouldn’t let us watch the second one though that’s more exciting because she was worried about the rating, although I highly doubt it’s anything that a group of 7th graders can’t handle…)
Oh yes, for the characters:
Logan Lerman (Percy Jackson) – personally I don’t think he’s the worst choice the cast has made. He’s pretty hot too. XD But anyhow, returning to my normal self…I’m pretty sure he’s 16 or 17, and Percy’s definitely supposed to be 12 in the first book. I mean, a 14 year old actor might have been ok tops, but Lerman definitely looks a LOT older. I mean, I guess he could pass for a 15 or possibly 14 year old, but 12? Definitely not! However I’ve heard he’s a good actor (He was in Hoot which I saw and liked although that was awhile back) and he is what I pictured if he was a few years younger…dark brown hair, etc. However you’re right – he does act way too cool from the short shots I saw in the latest trailer. He doesn’t look insecure or like a loser at all – he’s almost TOO hot for Percy who’s always described as bottom class, never fitting in, etc. I sure hope the whole movie depicts that side of him better.
Alexandra Daddario (Annabeth) – Hey, why don’t you just go and make Thalia a flower girl now with hot pink hair once the 2nd movie comes along?! After this casting choice I wouldn’t blink an eye…as far as looks go, I don’t see a hint of the Annabeth from the books in her. Now, that might not be a bad thing – Rick Riordan himself wrote somewhere that the movie will only be very loosely based on the book – but it’s still disappointing. For one thing, she’s in her 20s like you said and Annabeth is supposed to be 12. For goodness sake, my friend is 12 and is an actress and looks a lot more like Annabeth than this girl does…and the fact that Annabeth is older than Percy seems a little weird to me, especially if they both stick till the 5th book when they have a deeper relationship. I dunno, it’s just a little…irksome is the word I guess. Oh yeah, and the hair. At first I just expected them to dye it blond or something, but it’s definitely brown. Fishy – I know it’s not a HUGE deal, but I always liked the descriptions of the hair. As weird as that sounds. And I don’t know anything about her past acting experience so I’m not the one to judge (I googled her, all I found was that she was in a Yellowbook commercial…) so I can’t say, but honestly she’ll have to truly knock my pants right off with her acting skills before I truly like her.
/end rant/
Brandon T. Jackson (Grover) – I honestly know nothing about his acting skills, so I can’t say. But he doesn’t look anything like I imagined – I know this will sound racist, but I always pictured him as white, not black and kind of scrawny with acne, etc. He’s nothing like that in the movie though – like you mentioned, he’s muscular and a whole lot older than I ever imagined.
You’re right, I’m seriously doubting whether or not the casting directors read the book closely enough to notice these details… *furies with bubbles*
Sorry for the long post…
Well, she seems OK to me as long as her acting is good.
Yeah I know, I don’t know anything about her acting though although based off the trailer it’s decent…
It’s just so irritating that she’s brunette because it turns her into another Hermione, which drags the whole book down.
Agreed. I think that the less similar it is to Harry Potter most likely the better… See posts #52.1.1.3 and 52.1.1
I liked the movie Grover.
My school has a Latin course… and it also has SMARTboards…
0.o
Yeah … none of the characters in the commercial look how I imagined them. I bet Luke will have red eyes and laugh menacingly every 5 seconds. Rachel Elizabeth Dare will have amazing mind-reading powers, and Thalia will be able to fly because she’s Zeus’ daughter.
SFTDP, but Annabeth also tells Percy she has “strong feelings for him”. That shouldn’t happen until about Book 4!
And everyone looks at least 14. They should be twelve!
No, she doesn’t. She says “I have strong feelings for you, I just don’t know if they’re positive or negative yet.” I agree it’s a little early for her to be saying that, but it’s not just “I have strong feelings for you,” if it were, than I would agree that something would be seriously wrong.
sftdp
Most of the characters are older than 14. Much older. Heck, the whole cast is old!
you guys need to simma down. movie adaptations will never be completely true to their source material.
re: avatar (since my comment disappeared)
I agree with the honorable piggy, the storyline was hackneyed and self congratulatory as well as vaguely racist depending o how you want to look at it. I thought the animals were all basically dinosaurs or earth animals with extra legs. visuals were cool but not “game changing” :/
Today I saw Up in the Air which I enjoyed. I have so many movies I want to watch still.
Yup, like I said the author even said that the movie will be very different from the book, and from a couple of sources it sounds like a whole lot will be different. I’ll probably be disappointed but…that’s ok. As long as it’s a decent stand alone movie I’ll get over that.
You’re right about the movie adaptations, unfortunately. If I’ve read the book, I can’t watch the movie without saying something to the effect of, “In the book, this scene happened this way, not this baloney that the director put in.”
It’s easier to just not watch book-to-movie adaptations. Yet somehow, I can’t help myself.
Me friend B is dragging me to see the new Alvin and the Chipmunk sequel. Or Squakeul or whatever they’re calling it.
Chipmunks are cute.
Talking chipmunks………slightly frightening.
Chipmunks that sing and talk…. IRRATATING .
*RIPS HAIR OUT AT SOUND OF CHIPMUNKS SINGING*
Every time I see a trailer for the Avatar movie for next summer (Avatar: The Last Airbender, not the Avatar that’s out now), I feel an urge to take a remote/candy bar and throw it hard at the TV/movie screen.
Ditto. What with their casting choices, it’s hard to imagine it being anything like the series I know and love.
Well, it’ not just the casting choices (though those do make me quite angry). It’s just the general idea of taking an anime (or amerianime) and making a live-action film out of it. As I recall, they tried that with Dragon Ball Evolution – didn’t work too well.
The Blind Side was really good. Did anyone else see it?
What?! Avatar the Last Airbender movie? Can’t imagine anything more irritating.
Re: movie adaptations of books, I thought the Twilight movie was better than the book, but I haven’t read it in…a while, so I don’t remember what the book was like…*loses train of thought* Anyway, the movie was good.
Sorry for the DP – I just noticed – Armada posted! Hi, Armada!
So what are people’s new (and possibly, old) opinions on HBP now that we’re all watching it on DVD? I think it’s my favorite in the series yet, with just a few minor problems:
-Lavender’s overly romantic nature is kind of creepy at times
-Tom Riddle looks incredibly creepy – so much so, in fact, that I keep missing his incredible acting
-the attack and burning of the Burrow was not in the book, unnecessary, and downright depressing
-it’s just a little bit annoying that they took out both the Battle of Hogwarts and the funeral. If they had left one in, the deletion of the other wouldn’t have been so bad.
-not enough memory scenes.
However, I still thought that the rest of the movie was excellent enough to more than outweigh these negatives.
Plus, they took out half of the PIVOTAL scenes for the Deathly Hallows. I predict that the entire DH1 will be a bunch of exposition.
Actually, I’d rather watch that than those endless camping scenes in the book.
True. I didn’t imply that that was a bad thing.
Ummm. You forgot the key error they made: They totally messed up the entire Horcrux thing–Dumbledore in the movie claimed not to know what any of them were, when in the book, he told Harry all his suspicions (except for Harry himself) on what they were. So now in DH the movie, not only does Harry have to figure out where they Horcruxes are, he’s got to figure out what they are, as well.
In my opinion, though, it was the worst HP movie of the lot. I still say one and two were the only marginally passable ones, due to the fact that they were the truest to the books overall. And after I get back from getting my teeth out today, I intend to settle down on the couch with my Ultimate Editions of HP1 and HP2……
True. The trouble is that none of directors know very much about the books. The only reason why the first two were a bit better was because the director’s daughter was a huge HP fan, and kept telling him “oh, that’s wrong, you should fix it” and he actually listened to her some of the time.
Oh, come on. The third one was pretty close. (That was actually my favorite HP movie, unlike EVERYONE ELSE on the blog. PLEASE do not reply to this, I-Man.)
Are you sure that Dumbledore most definitely didn’t tell Harry what he thought the Horcruxes was, or that he most definitely DID tell Harry that he didn’t know what they were? Maybe he did tell Harry his suspicions and they didn’t show it on-screen.
SPOILER HBP SPOILER HBP SPOILER HBP SPOILER HBP SPOILER HBP SPOILER HBP SPOILER.
59 (I-Man): Shouldn’t that have a spoiler warning on it?) Well, here’s what you wrote/what I think: (Having just seen it the second time around, it’s now fresh in my brain.)
-Agreed. Lavender is a creep. But she’s a funny creep, so it’s ok.
-Yeah, I agree that Tom Riddle is creepy, especially his skin… *shudder* But it makes him look more mysterious and scary, which is what he’s supposed to be, so I don’t mind.
-Burning of the Burrow: I just see it as a way to put everyone in a bad mood. It’s not HORRIBLE, but once again I do agree with you – not necessary.
-The part at the end where they’re all surrounding Dumbledore and they put their wands in the sky to get rid of the Dark Mark is basically there in place of the funeral, and I think that’s fine. It even got me choked up a little…and I think that, surprisingly, the whole thing works just fine without the fight. I was very surprised that it did, but somehow I didn’t think that it was lacking.
-In the book, basically the whole story is surrounding the memories. However I always found those parts boring…I don’t know why, but most of them weren’t that interesting so I didn’t really feel like there wasn’t enough of them in the movie.
My own thoughts:
-Funny again the second time around. (When they’re all popping their heads in and out saying “Harry’s here” at the beginning cracks me up just because it seems so cheesy. I dunno why…and the “But I AM the Chosen One” is excellent.”
-Maybe just a little too much emphasis on the romantic parts of the book. I mean, I thought they were all very sweet but watching them the second time around got a little repetitive…the whole story seems to go back and forth between deathly stuff and romance, but at least it had humor to balance it out.
-Not enough Fred and George. I miss the times when they played a bigger part in the previous books, although with time constraints there just wasn’t enough room.
Overall though, I liked it. I’m still debating where it stands compared to the rest of the series, but I thought it was good, and not as depressing as HP5.
Meh, I would think nearly everyone on MB who cares about Harry Potter would have gone out and seen it by now.
Eh, good point.
“Meh” and “Eh” are fun to say
I agree with Starr the burning of the burrow was bad but I really did like the wands in the air to get rid of the Dark Mark.
*is Canadian*
*not really*
Eh, eh, eh, eh, eh I came back from a month in Canada attaching “eh” to every third sentence.
“But it was sunny yesterday, eh?”
“No, but I put the hat in the washing machine, eh?”
“That was a great game, eh?”
Yeah, it’s kind of a habit of mine…
I lived in Canada for one year actually (It was awhile ago though, I was only 5.) but we have Canadian friends who visit every year. I always find myself saying “eh” then.
Because “eh” is fun to say!
eh?
I just got back from Sherlock Holmes. It was… well, if you read it as an adaption of Sherlock Holmes, it was basically awful. If you could manage to separate the movie from the stories, it was better. Certainly not worth a second viewing, but not a total waste of six dollars. It had decent costumes and a good soundtrack and I rather liked Watson, but Holmes was all wrong, and Irene Adler was all wrong, and the plot was not wonderful. I had such a long list of things that were wrong, but in the time that has elapsed between the movie and this moment I have ceased to care very much.
I have not seen the movie yet, so I can’t say anything about the plot or such. However, I would like to point something out:
Many of the old Sherlock Holmes stories were named “The Adventure of _________”. Since the new movie is simply named Sherlock Holmes, I’m going to take that to mean that it’s supposed to mean less of an adaptation or remake of the old stories, and more of a re-imagining of the characters.
*character.
Well we KNOW it’s not an adaption, but they have no right to rethink the entire cast of characters and style of the stories simply for commercial purposes. This new Holmes is exactly like every other hero of his kind, and nothing like the interesting, unemotional genius of the stories, and it’s all STUPID. Maybe if everyone was familiar with the original Holmes, it would be OK, but now the vaguely illiterate public is going to be wandering around with all the wrong impressions of the stories! They haven’t any RIGHT to rethink Holmes. If they wanted to do that they could have created another character BASED on Holmes.
I’ve never read Sherlock Holmes – do you think I’d like it?
I just saw new moon and it is the most boring movie ever.
bubblebabe225–The Sherlock Holmes books are very good. I recommend Hound of the Baskervilles.
Yeah. Twilight was wayyy better.
Oops, I just realized what I said.
Save her! *bursts out laughing*
Twilight’s redeeming quality was that it was so bad it was funny. New Moon, however, was bad so it was boring. It might have been good, except the style of acting was the same from the last movie and it ruined it, at least in my opinion. *ends rant*
I thought new moon was a bit better than twilight because Robert Pattinson was gone for most of the movie.
Yeah! Bella should have gone with Jacob *shakes head sadly*
Squeeee!!! We’re going to see Avatar this afternoon!
*is joyous*
It’s absolute cake, trust me. The writing is outrageously cliched and predictable, the directing is shoddy, the acting is average at best.
Yes, but my family rarely ever goes to see movies, so any movies we go see is a cause for celebration.
But it has cool-looking aliens Just kidding, I haven’t seen it.
Well, duh. James Cameron cannot write at ALL. But I thought the acting and directing were good. And at least the script wasn’t as dopey as Titanic’s.
What acting? It was all CGI. Sigourney Weaver has gone from scaring me to death in Aliens to making me want to tear my eyes out. Why, Ripley, why???
Lucky!
Must see Titanic.
Never! Never! Owwwwwwwwwwwww!
Has anyone seen the Alice in Wonderland trailer? It looks like it’s going to be a really good movie, and it’s coming sooner than I thought! I laughed at the pig bit…
The Mad Hatter is really creepy. But the bunny is good and so is the Queen of Hearts.
I think it looks good, except for two things:
1) I don’t care if it’s a sequel, Alice should not be 10 years older now. Part of the charm and theme of the books and old movies revolved around the fact that she was a kid.
2) Mixing Alice In Wonderland and the Jabberwocky (who supposedly guards the Red Queen’s empire in this movie) is a disaster just waiting to happen.
I like that they cast Johnny Depp as the Mad Hatter, he’ll be a good fit for the role.
I love Johnny Depp! I cannot wait to see this highly creepy and brightly colored movie!!
Me too! Also, I-Man, the original Jabberwocky poem was actually from one of the Alice books.
I think he means that you shouldn’t fix the first book (Alice in Wonderland) with the second book (Through the Looking Glass), and using Jabberwocky is doing that.
No, my point was – Alice in Wonderland was rather screwed up (even though it was still pretty good). The poem Jabberwocky, and the creature Jabberwock, was also rather screwed up. Putting two screwed up things together (from my personal experience) does not tend to work well.
TIM BURTON PWNS! THAT IS ALL THAT IS NECESSARY TO SAY.
YES HE DOES! BURTON IS THE GOD OF ANIMATION!
I cannot wait for it to come out! Every time I go to the movie theater I stare at the picture of for a couple minutes (yeah I’m weird like that) then i continue doing whatever. The person who is playing the Cheshire cat looks like the perfect fit.
“Jabberwocky” is the poem, which concerns a creature called a Jabberwock (no “y”). The poem appeared in Through the Looking-Glass, which takes place in a different setting (a chessboard dominated by the Red Queen) from Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland (a card game dominated by the Queen of Hearts). So it’s not such a stretch to put the Jabberwock in Looking-Glass Land; at least it’s from the right book.
‘Twas brillig, and the slithy toves
Did gyre and gimble in the wabe
All mimsy were the borogroves
And the mome raths outgrabe.
“Beware the Jabberwock, my son!
The jaws that bite, the claws that catch!
Beware the Jubjub bird, and shun
The frumious Bandersnatch!”
He took his vorpal sword in hand,
Long time the manxome foe he sought,
So rested he by the Tumtum tree,
And stood awhile in thought.
And as in uffish thought he stood,
The Jabberwock, with eyes of flame,
Came whiffling through the tulgey wood,
And burbled as he came!
One, two! one, two! and through and through,
The vorpal blade went snicker-snack!
He left it dead, and with its head,
He went galumphing back.
“And hast thou slain the Jabberwock?
Come to my arms, my beamish boy!
O frabjous day, callooh, callay!” he chortled in his joy.
‘Twas brillig, and the slithy toves
Did gyre and gimble in the wabe,
All mimsy were the borogroves,
And the mome raths outgrabe.
(( All from memory, sorry for any misspellings. ))
Well done! “Borogoves” has only one “r,” however.
‘Tis strange that I have to memorize that poem for English… It is also strange that my friend who has the resemblance with Swat has memorized that poem recently… This is getting weird.
67- I don’t know about it… somehow it looked …garish. Especially Johnny Depp. True, it matches the story, but somehow I liked the cartoon form better. Less creepy. Yes, I know *hides under the bed for horror movies and many other films* I’ll just wait and see how the other lines are delivered- if the actress playing Alice messes up on the “but I don’t want to go among mad people” I’ll loath it, but if they all do a good job the movie might be kinda good. *prefers older movie versions*
I still haven’t seen the new “Charlie and the chocolate factory”, in part because I loved the old one so much and the songs aren’t the same *hums “I want the world, and I want it NOW*
Has anyone seen anything by Hayao Miyazaki? I recently watched Howl’s Moving Castle and Spirited Away. I really enjoyed them, and recommend them to anyone who doesn’t like scary movies.
And I know that Howl’s Moving Castle was originally a book.
Yep, by Diana Wyne Jones I think?? You should read it. I’ve yet to see the movie. I should…
Yeah, I’ve read it. If you disregard all the differences between the book and the movie, they both seem really good.
I loooooooove Howl’s Moving Castle. ‘Tis amazing. Best movie ever.
Spirited Away’s quite good, too. My other favorites are Whisper of the Heart, The Cat Returns (not actually Miyazaki, but it’s from the same studio), and Princess Mononoke (rather depressing, but amazing all the same). Oh, and stay away from Nausicaa of the Valley of the Wind and Castle in the Sky, if you want my opinion (although some people really like them). They’re pretty much the same style, and… I dunno, I don’t really like that style.
I liked Castle in the Sky, but not Nausicaa. Howl’s Moving Castle is awesome if you don’t compare it to the book.
*agrees* Well, sort of. I didn’t really like the movie, because it didn’t make sense sometimes.
If you liked those two, you should watch Kiki’s Delivery Service and My Neighbor Totoro. MNT = BEST. ANIME. MOVIE. EVER!!!
I saw both! They were awesome!
I kind of hate the English dub of MNT, though. We watched most of it in Japanese in Chinese class (because from what I’ve been told, Japanese is kinda sorta like Chinese), and when I heard the English voices… I freaked.
I’ve seen those two now! I really enjoyed both of them, and I liked the lesson from Kiki’s Delivery Service .
I just saw Sherlock Holmes, and it was great. In fact, it’s probably one of my 4 favorite 2009 movies (this coming from someone who’s seen only 6 or 7 2009 movies). There were a few problems, though:
-the plot took a bit of time to pick up
-the fighting and action became just a little bit much sometimes
-1 or 2 too many sexual innuendoes
-acting was a bit… mediocre at times
But everything else was great, and I (personally) think the positives far (but not completely) outweigh the negatives. Overall, I’d give it an 8 or 8.5.
And there was very little magic. Very. Little. Magic.
*SPOLIERISH SHERLOCK HOLMES SPOILERISH* Yeh, I saw it and liked it. I must agree, the random violence was a bit much at points. My friend and I had to leave when they were in the slaughterhouse, and we walked in just as the pier/wharf thing blew up. I screamed, “VIOLENCE IS NOT THE ANSWER!” at the same my friend dropped to her knees, pretended to sob, and yelled, “DON’T DIE, WATSON!” I’m still surprised as to why we weren’t kicked out of the theatre.
Yeah, the slaughterhouse was probably my least favorite scene of the movie. I did like one of Watson’s line in that scene, though: “What was that about saving bullets?” Great
I guess some people could call this a spoiler so, POTENTIAL SPOILER POTENTIAL SPOILER WARNING:
Pseudonym and I both saw it recently, I think, (personally) that somebody should have died in the slaughterhouse. Somebody! But I guess that’s just me. I found it very interesting when that SPOILERSPOILERSPOILERSPOLIER old guy drowned/got boiled to death in his bathtub.
Yes, yes I do have a sick mind.
Saw Avatar in 3D.
Dear god, the plot was absolute bollocks. I should not be able to accurately predict every single event or plot device in the film- even the unbelievably trite deus ex machina.
Cute visuals, though.
I cannot believe this man is making so much money off of this. It’s an insult to cinema. Tarantino should murder him.
Please don’t use that B-word, as it is extremely offensive in Britain. I thought the same of the plot and script, but thought the directing and acting were phenomenal. That scene where Jake first meets Neytiri was scripted horribly, but it was still really cool to watch.
The acting was phenomenal? Are you out of your mind? Every single character was an exaggerated stereotype with no subtlety at all.
I know, but I have to say that on the most part (especially with Sam Worthington) the acting made up for it. Sigourney Weaver did kind of suck, though.
And about the deus ex machina, at least it was a literal deus ex machina. But then again, you’re Elias. You think Christianity is a deus ex machina. (Did I really just say deus ex machina 3 times in two sentences?)
I agree with everything you just said.
Everyone on MuseBlog’s said it’s horrible, everyone in my off-blog life has loved it. Interesting….
But I haven’t seen it, so I can’t judge.
Actually, opinion on MuseBlog has been divided. At least a couple of people have raved, some loved the special effects but didn’t care for the story, and some simply hated it.
For anyone who wants to see it, if they have a choice, I recommend seeing it in IMAX 3D.
I saw it in Imax 3D (and normal 3D, but Imax is so much better).
I will never look at movies the same way again, I loved it that much.
I liked the movie and everything, I just don’t see why people are calling it OMG BETTER THAN STAR WARS. It was fun to watch, but it wasn’t that good.
Bleh. I hated Avatar. Don’t bother watching it in 3D; it got rather disorienting at times (but maybe that’s just me). I didn’t even notice the visuals. It was just a terrible waste of time in my eyes.
Anyway, made up for it with the amazingly tense and intense Blood Simple (first Coen brothers’ film) and the deeply moving and inspirational Creation (the film about Darwin). The former had me on the edge of my seat for an hour and a half, whereas the latter had me alternating between choking back tears and feeling ecstatic elation. Find a way to see it. I know of a certain bay of pirates that can be quite helpful in situations like these, when films don’t get distributed in certain countries because of ideological polemics.
I am really excited to see Creation once it gets wider distribution here. It did get picked up though!
72.3~ I saw it, it was good. I mean, not my absolute favorite, but it was pretty interesting and I enjoyed it.
*is ripped to pieces by the ‘blog*
I saw Sherlock Holmes too, and it was quite fun. Of course, I’ve only read maybe one of the stories and never seen any other Holmes movies….sad, I know. But I enjoyed it.
I’ve not watched Avatar, but I have heard it described (once in person, once on the net) as Pocahontas with blue people.
That’s a little like describing “Firefly” as Robin Hood with spaceships and horses.
I haven’t watched Firefly, either…..
But I get the idea.
Plot, and plot surprises, aren’t everything. If they were, nobody would ever go to the opera. Or reread Harry Potter.
True.
Of course, you’d get her with the Harry Potter. Honestly, though, you can make anything sound dumb pretty easily.
Harry Potter: A little boy can do magic! (And really stereotypical wands, broomsticks, potions type magic at that.)
LoTR: Midgets destroy an evil ring!
Buffy the Vampire Slayer: *points to name of TV show*
Doctor Who:
A guy time-travels in a phone box. And he has a magic screwdriver that opens doors!
Eep, sorry. That was me.
And THAT was meant to be a reply to:
Doctor Who: A guy time-travels in a phone box. And he has a magic screwdriver that opens doors!
Which I accidentally posted a the PoPo Officer Robot. *headdesk*
LOTR was the best one.
Ender’s Game: Little kids fight aliens! And talk like adults!
Star Wars: A farm boy goes and defeats an old guy using an electric sword!
Toy Story: Toys come to life!
To Kill a Mockingbird: A man wears glasses and talks a lot! And his kids go on little adventures!
Heck, we could make a whole thread for this…
A girl named Buffy slays vampires! (And other nasty creatures!)
I watched Avatar in a packed theater. The special effects were incredible. But I have to agree with Fridgey in that everything else was bland, predictable, and mindless.
On the other hand, I watched Fantastic Mr. Fox in a completely empty theater. It had no amazing special effects, but the characters, dialogue, and plot twist thrilled me. I am now a Wes Anderson fan.

75.1.1- You haven’t seen Firefly? *sics reavers on luna*
I haven’t read any Sherlock Holmes either. *puts on hound-of-the-baskervilles-proof vest*
We’re reading the Hound of Baskervilles this year in school…amazingly I haven’t read it yet.
Is anybody else as (happily) excited for The Lightning Thief as I am?
I am happy, but a little scared that they might ruin the story like they did to “Eragon”
It doesn’t look (at least, not from the trailers) that they changed too much. So far, there are only two possible differences I’ve seen from the trailers:
1) It looks like they actually use Zeus’s bolt.
2) It looks like Percy and Luke fight on the Empire State Building (or at least in NYC).
And yeah, Eragon was screwed up so badly it annoyed me. No wonder they didn’t make a movie for Eldest or Brisingr.
I agree. I’ve read Eragon 3 times and when I saw the movie…it made the book look really bad.
Which it was. Kokonilly knows what I know about it, and… it’s not pretty.
I just saw the Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus. It was very interesting, though a bit shoddy at tying things up in the end. Has anyone else here seen it?
I’ve seen it, but that probably doesn’t count.
It looks sweet, but my dad probably won’t let me see it. The CGI version of Terry Gilliam’s visual style looks absolutely incredible.
Yes, it does! I found the landscapes fascinating, but I didn’t get the “signs” on his forehead; somehow, I feel that they could have mentioned it a bit more.
79- No, but I read about it in one of the movie magazines at the theater and now I want to.
THE COVE
Oh my gosh, I could have cried. How come nobody knows about this stuff that’s going on? I’m hoping to get our school’s animal rights club to write letters to someone. I don’t know who…. Someone.
I just made a fake Avatar trailer with iMovie with footage from the real trailer… it’s hilarious. It’s set to the Counting Crows song Mrs. Potter’s Lullaby, and it changes the plot slightly (i.e., Jake and his avatar aren’t the same person). I might send it to the GAPAs, so stay tuned!
Does anyone have any suggestions for musicals that are films? On my list, I already have:
The Sound of Music
The King and I
Fiddler on the Roof
Bye Bye Birdie
Singin’ in the Rain
The Music Man
Grease
Hairspray
Annie
Pippin
Mary Poppins
Those were all the ones I could think of.
Nightmare Before Christmas! Or did you mean Broadway musicals?
Anything with Fred and Ginger is absolutely marvelous.
Percy Jackson movie comes out today…’nuff said.
It could be completely ruined or completely amazing…eek. Please please please don’t be ruined. *prays*
If it’s Disney-ified *glares* It better not be.
And I’m sorry if this is bordering on a PoPo, but I just had to get that out there.
As I’ve said before, I’m almost sure it will be a good movie, just not necessarily PJ.
The Rotten Tomatoes has it at 49%. The fan reviews are 77%. The consensus sounds pretty good, so I am pretty sure that you will like it. Don’t expect it to live up to the books, because that is always hard.
Yeah, just look at Harry Potter movies.
No offense, but it probably will be ruined. They’ve all been aged up to 18, when this is partially a school story. And Annabeth isn’t blonde!!!! That makes me mad. But I’m going to put those trivial things aside and keep an open mind. I’m a little sad that I don’t get to see it til Monday, but I’m going with a bunch of my book obsessed friends that talk during movies (about relevant things, of course) so it will be A LOT of fun!
It got two stars in the Boston Globe, I think.
SPOILER PERCY JACKSON SPOILER PERCY JACKSON SPOILER PERCY JACKSON SPOILER PERCY JACKSON SPOILER PERCY JACKSON SPOILER PERCY JACKSON SPOILER PERCY JACKSON SPOILER PERCY JACKSON SPOILER
Ok, just got back from the Percy Jackson movie. (!!!!!!) Overall: it was really, really good. I mean, it was really different from the plot – some major changes took place (Which I expected) but quite frankly, like Enc had predicted – it was really good as a stand alone movie, maybe not as a movie based off of The Lightning Thief. So as entertainment? It was really good.
CAST: Once you get past the fact that the characters are all too old and Annabeth has brown hair, I actually had no problem with the cast. The truth was that their older age gave the cast on a whole more depth and made the level of fighting more intense, which I thought was nice and I’m not sure they would be able to pull off as a bunch of 12 or 13 year olds.
Grover (Brandon T. Jackson) – was HILARIOUS. And the truth? He worked! He really did. The film made his character really work. He sort of put on this swagger-gangster style, which you would never expect coming out of Grover well, but somehow he managed it and pulled it all together.
Logan Lerman (Who plays Percy) had excellent acting, and was really close to what I imagined, although he seemed a little too “hot” for the part. He sort of had this cool, huge ego, which was a little bit discouraging, but like I said before, great as a stand alone movie although I did dislike how “cool” he was when in fact Percy’s supposed to be more of a loser and an outcast.
Alexandra Daddario (Annabeth) was nothing like I imagined – but I have to admit, the whole time, it wasn’t like I was comparing her to the vision of Annabeth I’ve always had in my head, which was nice. It just didn’t work out that way. She wasn’t quite as smart as what you would expect though – there were several times when I thought that there was something major going on and she didn’t step up and know it or appear to be very smart. And she definitely was a bit too pushy. I dunno, I didn’t like that.
SPECIAL EFFECTS: Good on a whole. The animation was very realistic, so done very well. The stunts were also really nice, so it didn’t look fake or out of place. Sort of reminded me of Harry Potter though – similar style of animation.
PLOT: Ugh. There were some major gaps here if you’re comparing it to the book – here were the big things I didn’t like: (in no order)
#1 – Percy never had to “find out” that he was the son of Poseidon. Right off the bat Chiron knew, so even though everyone who was watching it probably already knew that so it wasn’t like it was a surprise for anybody, it still would have been nice to add that suspense for Percy.
#2 – The quest wasn’t really a quest, it was like he just decides to get up, leave when he’s not supposed to (He never realistically would have gotten out on his own) and (Surprise!) Grover and Annabeth just-so-happen to be there too to go along with him. No Oracle, No Chiron.
#3 – What the heck happened to Clarisse? And Dionysus? I missed them. They didn’t show up AT ALL.
#4 – There was NO relationship development between Annabeth and Luke. Absolutely no depth there whatsoever. No hints that something more interesting has gone on in their past, in fact, they never even brush up on that fact.
#5 – The Underworld was not done well – they literally walk right in, no problem. They don’t see any spirits (Once, I think) and then they’re allowed in. So they don’t pass Cerberus, or the spirits, or Tarturus (Well, they did pass it, but they didn’t classify it as such) and so that made me sad. Persephone played a major part in it, when she’s not even mentioned ONCE in the book, and Grover was the one who stayed in the Underworld, not Percy’s mom.
#6 – the quest was literally guided for them. They had a map (?!?!) and then went from place to place catching gems, and they drive the whole way, which basically takes the fun out of trying to find transportation.
There’s probably more than I’m forgetting, but at least I got that ranting out…I’ll add on more in a different post. (And I’ll include the positive things in that one!) If you read the whole thing…congratulations!

And the scene with the tunnel of love! And where on Earth was Ares??? I didn’t even notice that until halfway through the movie. Then I screamed, “OH MY GOD WHERE’S ARES?!” and a little boy in the front row yelled back, “I DON’T KNOW!!!”
Haha. Actually, I guess that was funny in retrospect.

In the book, Ares is supposed to be controlled by Kronos, which is basicallyh the whole point of not only this book, but the whole series. What the heck are they going to do for the next film? And the one after that?
Also, little things I didn’t like was that Annabeth never called Percy “Seaweed Brain” (Which I know is not that big of a deal, but it did become her signature ting….) and she didn’t have an invisible Yankee cap.

I have returned from seeing the much-anticipated Percy Jackson movie. I think I basically have to agree with starr, but I have a few points of my own to make.
1. What happened to Argus?
2. Where was Procrustes?
3. Why was the Underworld on fire?
4. What about Echidna and the scene at the arch? Where did that go?
5. What was up with that Parthenon scene?
6. Why was Mrs. Dodds the English teacher? The first chapter is called “I accidentally vaporize my pre-algebra teacher” or something like that. PRE-ALGEBRA!
7. There was no mention of Thalia at all!
8. Alexandra Daddario seemed like more of a Thalia character to me. She didn’t seem as smart as Annabeth is in the books. Annabeth was always the thinker, the strategist, and Thalia was the one who was always fighting and being tough, which was how they portrayed Annabeth in the movie. Strange.
9. Percy, Smelly Gabe, and Medusa were achieved quite well. I really liked the Medusa scene, that was good, although I remember one of those iridescent balls on a pedestal was what Percy used to see Medusa’s reflection, not an iPod. Oh well.
10. Percy’s mom looked ever-so-subtly, and yet rather obviously (if that makes any sense at all) Greek.
Okay, I’ll stop going on and on. Overall, it wasn’t very true to the book (huge, gaping holes, to be honest) but as a screenplay, it was quite good. Hmmm. Things to think about.
SPOILER SPOILER PERCY JACKSON SPOILER SPOILER.
Maybe their compromise was to leave Thalia out, but make Annabeth look and act like her.
SPOILER PERCY JACKSON SPOILER PERCY JACKSON SPOILER PERCY JACKSON SPOILER PERCY JACKSON SPOILER PERCY JACKSON SPOILER
I sort of doubt it. I mean, I don’t want to rule out that possibility, but if it is the case…I’ll be pretty mad. Besides, Thalia is almost nonexistent in the first book. I can definitely see them popping her tree in the second film just to make it work though, and I’d be pretty surprised if her character is totally out of the plot. This is Hollywood, after all. It happens all the time in a series that’s based off a book.
Still, I can’t deny the fact that Annabeth is much more like Thalia, but that seems to be more about the actress than anything else. Alexandra Daddario seems to have gravitated more towards Thalia’s personality but then again, it’s also the way the crappy script was set up.
SPOILER PERCY JACKSON SPOILER.
My random opinions:
1. Where’s Ares? Half the plot depended on him.
2. On a smaller scale, no Clarisse, Dionysus, Echidna, Procrustes, or Cerebrus.
3. Why didn’t they explain about Elysium, Asphodel, and Punishment?
4. How could they leave out Thalia?
5. Annabeth was … completely different in looks and personality.
6. The special effects were good.
7. The Lotus Casino was way different than I thought, but it worked.
8. What about the cabins at Camp Half-Blood?
9. They should have worked in that Gabe had been hitting Sally … otherwise it seems a little mean to turn him to stone.
10. What about Kronos?
Rainbow*star- Periods no longer end the comment in the RC bar. You have to make your spoiler warnings much longer now.
I just finished watching Le Valet and it’s really, really funny and charming. The ending is good and the people you think are going to fall in love actually don’t.
This is Princess_Magnolia who doesn’t feel like logging out of Pseudo’s account. POSSIBLE SPOILER WARNING.
Anyway, I’ve just seen Percy Jackson, and I give it a 2 1/2 out of 4. Not having read the book, I can’t judge on any of that stuff. In the beginning, the plot seemed to move a little too quickly and got really, like, incoherent. Whatever. Also, it was a little clichéd. Just a tad. And some of the acting was kind of bad. Like that whats-his-name dude – the centaur. But Hades was the scariest place. I was kind of rooting for Persephone in that scene with the fireplace, but also whatever. I liked the ending. A lot.
89 – Yeah, that’s why I like the ending of Percy Jackson. You think Annabeth or whatever her name is is going to kiss Percy, but then she attacks him with a sword
But just once I’d like to see a movie in which the main character fails at something that really can’t be solved.
All in all, I liked Percy Jackson MUCH better than Dear John. *shudder*
“That centaur dude” was Pierce Brosnan, AKA James Bond. I actually thought his acting was quite good.
It’s probably the writers. Just seemed too corny for me.
(Would have posted this on Tuesday or sooner, but I was busy and then I got a friggin’ concussion yesterday)
SPOILER PERCY JACKSON SPOILER PERCY JACKSON SPOILER PERCY JACKSON SPOILER PERCY JACKSON SPOILER PERCY JACKSON SPOILER that should be good.
Overall, I’d have to say a 2.5/3 out of 4. I think many of the important things they left out/stuck in (Kronos, Luke supposedly dying) were done so because they didn’t want to do sequels and go through the same pre-release reception for four books. And after that, there were only 5 significant plot differences I noticed:
1) Hydra not until the 2nd book (if they are doing sequels, one less thing to worry about missing, I guess)
2) Shield that rotates out not until 2nd book (again, if sequels, one less thing to worry about)
3) People actually used the bolt.
4) Luke and Percy fought in New York City instead of Camp Half-Blood. And it was more of an actual fight.
So I liked it quite a bit, but I think how much you’ll like it depends on how big of a fan you were of the books:
-If you never read the books, you’ll probably like it the most
-If you were a fan of the books to some degree, you’ll still like it
-If you didn’t like the books, you’ll probably not like it much
-If you’re a raving, rabid fan who memorizes every little detail and obsesses over them… run screaming and don’t come back.
Incidentally, the Mick Jagger look for Hades was awesome
I like your little chart at the bottom quite a bit, seeing as I know many people who’ve watched the film all at different levels of fan-ness and the chart is very accurate.
But it’s sort of weird, because I’m definitely the “raving, rabid fan” and yet I still enjoyed it in a teeth gritting sort of way. If that makes any sense at all.
I liked it even though I hadn’t read the book. At the beginning, I was relieved that there were no cliche romances, but then Annabeth came in and I was disapointed. Oh well. I’ve been reading too much Pratchett.
PERCY JACKSON SPOILER PERCY JACKSON SPOILER PERCY JACKSON SPOILER PERCY JACKSON SPOILER PERCY JACKSON SPOILER
Their romance develops MUCH slower and much more realistically in the book – I guess because they’re older they decided to throw some more “romantic” elements in the film, if you can call it that. They were nowhere near kissing in the first book, but they came pretty close in the film.
PERCY JACKSON SPOILER PERCY JACKSON SPOILER PERCY JACKSON SPOILER PERCY JACKSON SPOILER PERCY JACKSON SPOILER PERCY JACKSON SPOILER.

I got that much, but there was DEFINITELY more romantic aspects to the film than in the book. The Annabeth in the book would not have done that in my humble opinion. (And I agree with Errata about the pool scene.)
However like I said, that’s just comparing it to the book. In the film version, it worked pretty well.
Just saw Alice in Wonderland.
Oh. My. Gosh. Best Tim Burton movie EVER. I cannot find words to describe how amazing it was. It’s unfair that critics have been dismissing it for a variety of nonexistant reasons, because this movie was simply amazing. I was fortunate enough to see it in 3D, and I’m glad I did, seeing all the gimmickry they used (such as soldiers pointing their spears into the camera, the March Hare throwing things, etc.) I’ll talk about the visual effects in a moment, but first I have to say that the acting was superb. Mia Wasikowska (pronounced Vosikovska, for those who were wondering) was wonderful as Alice. Johnny Depp really got into his character, as did the other Burton regular, Helena Bonham Carter. All the CGI characters were very well acted as well, with Alan Rickman as a truly remarkable caterpillar, and Christopher Lee, even with only two lines, was an outstanding Jabberwocky.
Now, on to the visual effects. This movie really did what Avatar did very rarely, in my honest opinion, which was to make the live-action and CGI indistinguishable. It flawlessly puts Johnny Depp and the gang into a Wonderland that is as believable as any Pandora. While some of the 3D seems like a gimmick, as I already mentioned, some of it will make your jaw drop. I very much hope that Tim Burton will make a 3D CGI animated movie, because it would be fantastic.
Watch this movie. You owe it to yourself to. If you liked Avatar, you’ll love it, if you didn’t like it, you’ll probably still love it. All you people still seething about a certain movie based on a popular book series that stars Logan Lerman, this is your antidote. I-Man, I know you kind of liked the movie I just referred to, but knowing you, you will think that this equals PWNAGE!!
And finally, to wrap it all up…

I know! Isn’t it the best movie of the year so far?
On a different note, I was going to see Diary of a Wimpy Kid, but virtually every professional movie reviewer mentioned the boatloads of toilet humor. There was almost NONE of that in the books (note: I said almost) and I can’t believe they would use that kind of stuff to mess up the movie.
I saw Diary of a Wimpy Kid and I thought it was pretty good, if you like that sort of light, childish humor. There was obviously nothing intense or really emotional about the film, but as a light, humorous movie? Sure. I thought it was decent.
As for the “toilet humor”, yeah, there was more than in the book, but some of it was pretty funny.
Oh. My. George. I just came back from seeing HTTYD, in Imax, and it. Was. AWESOME!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! *excessive amount of exclamation points*

Yup.
That was indeed a fantastic movie. Much better than I expected from DreamWorks. And inoffensive too!
It was indeed good… To be honest, I mostly remembered freaking out when I saw that David Tennant had a cameo.
Oh, oh! That reminds me…..I was going to watch that just for DT.

Yeah… I wouldn’t have noticed except that I was leaving the theater and out of the corner of my eye, I was pretty sure I saw David Tennant in the credits…
Saw The Last Song yesterday. It was really pretty bad. Acting flat. Has anyone else seen it?
I really thought I was going to like it!!! Darn!
But I hated Dear John, and this was also a Nicholas Sparks movie.
What a waste of $18.
Has anybody here seen How to Train Your Dragon? It looks like it might be my favorite Pixar/Dreamworks film in a long while.
(No, I haven’t read the book yet. If I do, it probably won’t be for a while, and I’ll probably have seen the movie by then.)
SFTDP
OK, just saw HTTYD, and speaking as someone who hasn’t read the book, I’d have to say that as a standalone movie…
Phenomenal. Amazing. And probably my favorite Dreamworks and/or Pixar film in a long while. Two things that made it stand out were:
1. The moral lesson or moment of self-realization wasn’t shoved in your face every 15 to 30 minutes.
2. It was more intense. Maybe just as kiddy, but quite a bit more intense.
On top of that, fitting music, interestingly unique characters, and an interesting plot made it very, very memorable.
Yes, definitely. Not quite up to Pixar standard in my opinion, but this is the closest DreamWorks has ever gotten.
I just saw it. In a theater. Probably the last day it was in that particular theater, too.
But it was very good.
“I am hurt. I am very much hurt.”
“Yeh need ta stop all of…this”
“You just pointed to all of me…”
“Yes. Tha’s it!”
MY AVATAR HAS CURRENTLY CHANGED TO ANNOUNCE THE RELEASE OF Disney/Pixar’s Toy Story 3.
Have you seen it? Is it good? I’m seeing it tomorrow.
I saw it, and it was amazing! Did anyone else see it and love it as well?
I did. THAT MONKEY WAS SO CREEPY.
I saw it, and although I liked it, I thought that it sadly fell short of the Pixar standard. The middle section was too long, too serious, and too intense for a G-rated movie. The beginning and end were so perfect, though, that the rest of the movie was. Redeemed greatly. I’d give it an 8/10.
They don’t decide the ratings, so don’t blame them for that. Although I agree it was much more intense than the other Toy Story’s…
Currently watching There Will Be Blood. It’s not disturbing, but it is freaking me out. I feel like Eli is going to start throwing crosses at people and Daniel… Oh god I think he’s going to start taking buckets of burning oil and throw it everywhere. There’s so much tension and I feel like something huge has to happen. Where is this blood?! There was some earlier, but I’m expecting something more drastic. Oh well. Anyone else seen it? 45 minutes left!
Cake. I feel asleep before the ending. I never do that.

That’s supposed to be fell…. To make this not a PoPo… How has everyone been feeling about Shrek and Toy Story? I haven’t seen either, but I really would like to. Which one do you think is better? Anyone going to see Eclipse?
Haven’t seen Toy Story 3, but I saw Shrek. It wasn’t bad, but it wasn’t that good either.
I could say more, but I’d spoil the entire thing.
My sister did see Toy Story 3, she says it was great.
Toy Story 3 was great. You’ll cry.
Hehehe. Metal Gear Engrish!
I saw The Ghost Writer last Monday on a plane trip. Pretty good for a whodunit of sorts. And I am now obsessed with Ewan McGregor.
VSFTDP, but I just watched the Deathly Hallows trailer and it was freaking epic. Not very revealing about what happens, but epick as heck.
Except for all the scenes that had nothing to do with the book. I seriously do t remember Voldemort cornering Harry in an alley. Or Hogwarts falling apart.

Well, at least they can replace the camping scenes.

Going to see Inception today. *is happy*
SFTQP *sweats*
No I’m not. *is sad*
Did anyone else see Inception? It was quite confusing, but extremely entertaining.
I eventually saw it on Sunday. I didn’t think it was that confusing, actually. It always stayed a few steps ahead of you, but not too many steps ahead. It’s probably my favorite movie of the year so far.
I finally watched the Percy Jackson movie! Annabeth was awesome if you ignore her hair colour. Grover was hilarious but not what I had expected. Why did Zeus and Hades have long, curly hair?
And also. My favourite part of the movie. When they go to the Parthenon.
As I live right outside of Nashville, and used to take ballet 3-5 days a week right across the street from said Parthenon, inside the park that the Parthenon is (the art center there does acting, dance, and jam band…), that part amused me immensely. When they were driving to the Parthenon, I was laughing hysterically because they drove straight down West End, and the clip of video of that was RIGHT ACROSS FROM THE BORDERS! And my sister was like “I RECOGNIZE THOSE FLOWERS!”. Inside the Parthenon, I was very picky about the details that were wrong, because I love the Parthenon and have been there numerous times.
1. Athena is plated in gold. In the movie scenes, the Athena they use is not even painted gold. This annoys me.
2. When the pearl lands on that grate-thing. I do not remember there being grate-things in the room where Athena is.
3. The water fountains. WHAT? Water fountains???
And then when they turned the monster into stone with the Medusa head, I commented “Mandi’s gonna love that.” and we all started laughing hysterically again. (A writer friend of mine, Mandi, works at the Parthenon as a docent when she isn’t running her magazine, and during NaNoWriMo last year we had a write-in behind Athena, with free admission, thanks to her. :D)
Overall- not very much like the book, but enjoyable in it’s own way, and the Parthenon scenes made me laugh.
Just saw Inception today, as part of the _____ Summer Institute’s theater day. And… wow. That was amazing.

Some of the rules about the dream world and their applications to the plot were a bit hard to follow, but I thought it was cool how it extended on the concept of The Matrix rather than just copying it. And the ending was very interesting.

Hey, what would you expect? We’re bloglings!
PRETTY DARN BIG INCEPTION SPOILER COMING UP IN 54321…
I thought the ending was interesting too. I actually predicted after seeing the movie that there would be a thread on half of the discussion forums in existence debating that ending. Personally, I thought that since you saw the totem wobble right before it faded to black, it meant that he finally got to see his kids in the real world. Still, there are bound to be people that disagree with me. What’d you think?
So, opinions of Eclipse? It was about as awesome as it could get and still be Twilight. I saw it in a theater with only about 30 people, and am pleased to say there was a lot of giggling when Jacob said he was “hotter” than Edward. And at the hilariously awkward Charlie/Bella talk. Yes, that talk.
I saw Inglorious Basterds on DVD today! I must say, it was one of the most entertaining movies I’ve seen in a long time. Very graphic, but not wastefully so. I thought perhaps they were going to have it fit with history (having them say it was some sort of cover up), but no such thing happened. I couldn’t decide if it was happy ending… Although logic tells me it was. Has anyone seen it?

It’s not that old. STOP MAKING ME FEEL OLD, DANG YOU
I’ve never even heard of that video game or movie!
Actually, in Muse a few (3– 4?) years ago, there was a math page that had to do with myst. I miss math pages
No, you’re right, it’s not that old. I really just meant ‘not new’.
*jawdrop* I don’t know whether to be frightened or amazed…
I’m not sure either. My parents played that video game together when they were first married (…and that doesn’t sound like a weird way to keep track of things, okay?), which was about fifteen years ago? We still have it, but for some reason it got all messed up so I never got to play it. We did have the sequel to it, what was it called. Quin? Something like that. I’m too lazy to look it up.
But I do have the book based off of Myst, and have read it like a million times.
[/end_ramble]
I’ve played it several times. Lots of fun.
Haven’t read the book yet though. Woudn’t want to spoil the game for myself.
Actually, the events of the books precede the games. They’re a great addition to the universe of Myst. (I actually read the books before I played the game, which I really need to get around to finishing.)
The movie will be based on the Book of Ti’ana. Which one do you have? I have all 3
…dang, I need to go play that.
Old thread? Hmmm it’s still open, Oh, and not dead.
Inception! I was pleased- fast but not confusing (although after Primer I’m ready for anything), and visually exciting while retaining a tragic romance.
I was doing some research, and it sounds like the Tintin movie is in post-production! Very exciting, but I have to admit to some olbie distress- if it’s bad (which I doubt) it could publicly RUIN Tintin, whereas if it’s good there’ll be all these new POSER fans who haven’t even read all the original books, much less en français.
Funny story though! Apparently Simon Pegg (with Nick Frost as Thompson & Thompson! AMAZING.) wasn’t doing a fight well enough, so Spielberg started to beat him up a little to show him how it’s done.
=D
And while I’m here, Arrested Development movie, anyone? Rumors circulate that there’s a more than halfway finished script!
Typo! It’s Thomson & Thompson, silly me.
New thread, please?
Agreed.
Movies on my list:
–Catfish. I demand that no one spoil it for me.
–The Town.
-That other thing that I forget…what was it?
That’s all.
I forgot The Social Network.
The only other movie I plan to see is Tron. I just saw Legend of the Guardians, and although the story was only OK, the animation was breathtaking (especially in 3D).
I know this thread has mostly been discussing recent movies, but I’d like your opinions: which is the best Star Trek movie? Of the first four, I’m going with The Voyage Home.
So a week or two ago, I went to see Legend of the Guardians with my friend S, and for both a book-to-movie movie and an animated movie…
It.
Was.
Awesome.
My only major complaints are that Jim Sturgess’ voice as Soren got on my nerves some times, and the plot elements they added/removed threw off the pacing a little bit.
Especially the animation. I haven’t read the books, which is probably a good thing, but the plot was good too.
I was watching Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire last night, for the first time in about four years. First, I noticed that David Tennant was playing Barty Crouch, Jr. Then, I noticed that Robert Pattinson was playing Cedric Diggory.
IT WAS SO WEIRD.
He looked all cleanly shaved and combed, but it was still Edward. RPattz was definitely more normal looking four years ago, but it freaked me out.
Also, why didn’t I know that Robert Pattinson was in Harry Potter? That had to have been his first major screen appearance…and is he British? *checks*
“Robert Thomas Pattinson (born 13 May 1986) is an English actor, model, musician, and producer. Born and raised in London, Pattinson started out his career by playing the role of Cedric Diggory in Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire.”
That’s Wikipedia. Hmm. Model? Wait a second, musician? Producer??
He’s a producer? I’m scared now.
Wikipedia didn’t tell me what he produced.
His music really stinks. One of his songs is on the Twilight sound track, which I received from a friend for Christmas a few years ago. Yes, I too was a nastily brainwashed Twihard once. It was horrible. Back on topic though. The song is just him mumbling with a very quiet guitar riff in the background.
i just want to say that both twilight soundtracks have excellent music which will forever leave me befuddled, but ah well
Yeah, the rest of the music is actually really kick-butt. However, it saddens me to think that the only reason they used so much of Muse is because they are the author-who-must-not-be-named loves them.
I knew this. In fact, seeing as I’m going as an insane, Twilight/Edward-obsessed fan for Halloween (in the spirit of mocking), I suggested that my friend be my counterbalance and dress up as Team Cedric.
I just watched the movie Tampopo. It was probably the weirdest movie I’ve ever seen, after 2001.
It was good, though rather surreal. And I certainly wouldn’t reccomend it for anyone under high-school age.
*casts Revive on the thread*
Anyone see the new trailer for Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides?
When I first heard they were even making a 4th one, I thought it cheesy something terrible. But after seeing that… I can’t wait
My only major complaint so far is that the plot seems a bit overflowing. We’ve got mermaids, Blackbeard appearing after apparently having been gone for a really long time, Jack appearing in some royal court in London, a new Spanish-speaking lady that I can only assume is supposed to replace Elizabeth Swann, etc. all in a two minute trailer.
Totally agree. I don’t really know how they’re going to pull it off this time.
Well, I saw TRON: Legacy today…
It was pretty good The soundtrack was great, the special effects were awesome, and I like how they made it seem like they were going to be using some fairly cliche plot elements and then go off in a majorly different direction. My only complaint is that the real-world plot was pretty confusing to me. Oh, and they didn’t spend enough time in Light Cycle
Anyone else on the blog seen The King’s Speech? I personally thought it it was one of the best, if not the best, films of 2010. The acting, writing, directing, cinematography, and score were all masterfully done. I hope I can see more from Tom Hooper.
GAPAs, if we’ve not fulfilled our quota of new threads, could we possibly get a new one here?
muselover– I liked The King’s Speech a lot as well! I’ve heard that many people who have a stammer in real life were very happy with the way everything was portrayed. Of course Colin Firth was amazing as usual
He directed the John Adams miniseries as well, which I LOVED so yeah.
As of right now I’ve seen all of the Best Picture Academy Award nominees except for Winter’s Bone and The Kids Are Alright, both of which I hope to see before the show at the end of the month.
Well, the actress playing Katniss has been chosen for the upcoming Hunger Games movie: Jennifer Lawrence. I’m currently happy with that choice, particularly if she gets her hair dyed darker for the role. Suzanne Collins has approved her, which is a plus, and the girl can clearly act. She even has a southern/Appalachian accent, which I admit to particularly hoping for.
I wonder who’s going to play everyone else in Hunger Games? *can’t think of any actors*
Legend Of The Guardians = AWESOME whether you’ve read the books or not.
… Did Deathly Hallows get its own thread or something?
The actors for Peeta and Gale were announced today. *grumbles* Isn’t Peeta blond and blue-eyed?
I saw the trailer for POTC4! It looks like it could be either awesome *hope* or … veryverynotgood. I don’t know what’s going to happen without Will and Elizabeth.
Also, there’s a new X-Men movie coming out. Looks good.
Deathly Hallows part 2 comes out in less than a month! *happydance* I will hopefully be going to the midnight premiere, wearing Hufflepuff colors.
Also, I saw POTC4 yesterday. It was okay, but still not as good as the first.
Has anyone seen the new DH2 trailer on YouTube? It seems to have Gringotts, the dragon, Fiendfyre, the Prince’s Tale, and the Resurrection Stone ghosts; yay! But there’s also a scene of Harry and Voldemort falling off a tower, what the cake is up with that?
If they leave out Neville’s Crowning Moment of Awesome, I will quietly nerdrage at them.
I don’t have any yellow clothes to wear to the premier. I also want to learn to knit. Solution: FIND some yarn and make a Hufflepuff scarf. *runs off to do so*
I read an article about the Hunger Games movie advertising it as “the next Twilight”. *panics*
Maybe just because of the love triangle?
Let’s hope.
*coughdeadthreadcough*
I wonder if there’s going to be a midnight premiere for the HG movie? If so, I really want to go in costume. I have a green shirt, tan cargo pants, a black jacket, a bird pin (blue, unfortunately), and I can braid my hair and paint my nails … Not likely the tributes will be wearing that exact outfit in the movies, though.
The Hunger Games trailer is up on YouTube! Not much in it, but it seems pretty good. I’m glad they dyed her hair. Also, does anyone else think that’s Rue’s mockingjay whistle at the end?
That seems to be the consensus. I’d say the trailer made it look very good. Of course, there’s only so much we can say from a 30 second teaser, but I’d say they seem to have an interesting idea of how to portray the arena (very realistically rather than surreal/science-fiction-y). Plus, we can see that they’re special effects were pretty good, as well as Jennifer Lawrence’s bad-assery.
Thought it was the whistle, yeah.
And I’m really excited for the movie. My friend is an extra in it, one of the people it Katniss’ district, as well as a trainer (she was supposed to be an avox but got switched to trainer) and one of the capitol people. I’m realy envious. She got to meet all the actors.
I liked it as a trailer, which is a kind of weird thing to say. I liked how they only really showed stuff from the beginning, unlike most trailers that show all the action near the end. I also liked how they didn’t seem to be emphasizing the action too much.
That is SO cool about your friend! How did she get to do that? Does she think that it’s good, having seen it be filmed?
Looks excellent! I didn’t really like what looked like was supposed to be Katniss’s fire dress though, after all the description they went through in the book, just a plain red dress doesn’t really cut it.
So, Hunger Games movie out in a week or so! What does everyone think of the trailers, casting, etc.?
Semicoherent stream of opinions: Katniss looks how I pictured her, if a bit older. Gale looks too tall/muscular and too white, and Peeta looks … un-Peeta-like, somehow. I’m not really sure. And Cinna … I don’t know. I drew Cinna a while ago (he’s my favorite ^///^), and I pictured him very unlike movie!Cinna. Rue, Thresh, Cato, and Prim look pretty much how I thought. They seem to have cut Madge out of the movie. -_- I agree that Katniss’ fire dress needs to be about 20% more fiery. The arena seems to be very green and normal-forest-y, instead of surreal and artificial. Hm.
Also, apparently Gale’s actor is a semi-famous actor who was in one of those romance novel movies (The Last Song? The Notebook? Dear John?). So I’m worried that a bunch of fangirls will see the movie because of him and Ruin Everything Forever. *twitches*
I can live with the casting… Katniss annoyed me at first, because of the whole baby-face thing I was afraid she’d end up cutefied but from what I’ve seen Jennifer Lawrence can do tough. I like Gale, but Peeta- I guess it’s what they did to his hair that drives me crazy, I always pictured it slightly unkempt because he’s kind of like a kid in some ways, but I think Josh Hutsomething can pull the character off well enough judging by his past films. Cinna drives me crazy, they completely ruined him. I love the other tributes.
I dunno, I sort of pictured the arena differently-it’s way too normal-forest-y, I expected it to be slightly off, with unusual vegitation or everything too bright. What’s with the cornucopia, btw? Fire dress… it’s pretty, but not fire-y. I was looking for more of a flame motiv. But these are more minor quibbles.
I’m more worried about the take on the story in general- the whole Peeta/interview clip seemed way off- Peeta was supposed to be a natural team with Caesar from the beginning, joking around, maybe still a little playful at the beginning when Caesar starts talking about “a girl”, then getting serious, not the whole funeral-attitude from the beginning. But we’ll see.
SO excited to see it!!
Aaaand my friend is an extra (she showed up in the trailer like 4 times! Recognizably!
Dressing up and going at midnight
Maybe we should have a new thread? You know, since it’s 2012 and all? We don’t really seem to watch a lot of movies ’round here.
