International Darkness Appreciation Month

As the nights get longer in the Northern Hemisphere, it strikes us that darkness gets a bad rap. People associate it with evil, as in “the Dark Lord” and “the Dark Side of the Force.” Ridiculous! (Every MBer knows that evil is pink.) To redress the imbalance, MuseBlog hereby dedicates October and its Random Threads to the wonders and delights of darkness.

    First post?

I’m wearing pink nail polish, y’know. All right, darkness… I just finished reading Warriors: Power of Three: Dark River (so much better than The Sight). Oh yeah, and a friend of mine(who used to be obsessed with Darth Vader) once told me the Dark Side is sexy.

Anyway, it’s meant to be 25 degrees today (and was 20ish yesterday)(I know I’ve been spending too much time on MuseBlog when I see a temperature and think it’s Farenheit). *squee* I’m wearing my Urania T-shirt. Sounds like The Summer of Mostly Harmless  *wonders if that even made sense*

I like the dark. But sometimes I see strange things in the dark, which I don’t like.
I think that generally, humans don’t like the dark because it’s hard for them to see, which means they might not know about what’s there. Generally, humans hate or fear things they don’t know about. Or they make up something to explain it, so they don’t have to hate or fear it.

Remember spdzks (and their related points)? Well, I introduced them to my math class last week, when I wrote a logic problem (one of those truthteller or liar ones) about the planet Spdzk. I can post it, if anyone wants. (It’s pretty hard but doesn’t require any background knowledge. My original problem for this week, a proof of a combinatorial identity I came across when playing with a problem, is not so simple.)

Here we go. It’s kind of long. My apologies if I accidentally left some LaTeX code in.

A paper written by an alien from the planet Spdzk was discovered by scientists on Earth. From this paper, it appears that several things have different colors on Spdzk than they do on Earth. In this paper, two sources are cited and two statements are uncited. According to the teacher’s comments, all of the statements that from one source were lies, while all of the statements from one source were true. Furthermore, one of the uncited statements was true, while the other was false. The teacher added that frogs are either blue or green and that grass is either blue or green. Based on the following statements, assuming that the teacher was correct, what colors are frogs, grass, and the sky on Spdzk?

Statements cited from the Spdzk Book Encyclopedia:
If Spdzkipedia is telling the truth, then the sky is blue.
The sky is not blue and grass is not green.

        Statements cited from Spdzkipedia:
Frogs are not blue if and only if the sky is blue.
Grass is green or frogs are green.

        Uncited statements:
Frogs are the same color as the sky.
If frogs are a different color from the sky, the sky is purple.

I dunno, I’m still hoping that i’m just imagining things, and not really coming down with something.

Of course, with my luck, and given that lots of people on campus have been coming down with it, I’ll have the dreaded you-know-what…..

So this week is homecoming week at my school, and for once I decided to dress up with the theme days.

Monday: Class color day wor senior shirt like evryone
Tuesday: Tie-dye day, cut/alterered/tied an shirt that we got at a concert we won tickets to for The [Grateful] Dead when I was 10

Wednesday: 80s day, but this is where I got bored with being like everyone else. I really dislike the styles from the 1980s (uhg), so I dressed as though I was fro the 1780s.* I had a long blue dress that was rather loose and kind of too short, but it had really nice-looking sleeves, and then I borrowed a blue-and-black leather bodice one of my friends got at a renaissance-fair type thing and wore that over it. It was laced reeeeaaally tightly, as it was supposed to be, and maybe it improved my posture/waist but it was so hard to breath x_x I almost sneazed during math and nearly exploded. I loved it though–I got a ton of compliments and everyone was envious. I also had one old pearl jewelry, it looked good together.

The today was theme day, and out theme or homecoming is Candyland (like the game), but I wore my senior sweats and my top hat because I knew no one would ask me to take it off today, thinking it was part of a costume. But really I just wanted to wear my hat in school XD

Tomorrow we’re supposed to wear school colors. Boring, but oh well.

*approximately! I had less than 24 hours to come up with a costume so it probably wasn’t historically accurate. I was going to come on and ask MF or someone but I had no time for the comp >.<

That sounds like what we just did! Spirit Week was last week for us, and the theme was Disney. I decided I didn’t care who though I was crazy and went all out.
First day was DC Original Movies, and sophomore class was Zenon-themed. I wore black high-heeled boots up to my thighs, lime green tights, a weird lime shirt I wore for dance when I was 8 that looks spacey, and my hair in a ginormous bun on top of my head with little aliens scotch-taped to the top. Needless to say, lots of people stared.
Second day was Disney Classics, and our class was Alice in Wonderland (WIN). I was the Rabbit, complete with a pocketwatch, vest, bow tie and giant ears, and scrambled around the halls between every class telling random freshmen that I was late and enjoying the stunned looks on the faces.
Third day: Spirit Day. Our class color was purple. I wore a purple alligator costume from when my brother was little. I pretended to eat my history teacher’s face with my alligator head. It was great.
    I miss Spirit Week.

I really only participated in the Crazy Hat/Hair though because I couldn’t seem to find anything that mismatched (All of my clothes are really matched, it’s kind of hard to mismatch anything.) As for Inside Out, I just didn’t feel like doing it (The whole idea, especially with pants, seems a little weird to me, but that’s just me!) and School Colors…well, I might have worn a red shirt on accident but basically that was it… I did do some funky ponytails/braids/twist thingy with my hair which was pretty awesome though!

Hi, I had no time to sign on, sahhry.

I’m posting it here because nobody will read it on the writing thread. This is my evil little project that I’m submitting annonymously to the student newspaper. :) Thought you might like it. BTW this is a first draft, the second is going to be much more, em, edited. Yes. Edited is the word.

If it weren’t for that decimal that seems to mean everything these days, there’s no doubt high school halls across the country would be a lot less crowded. I can name you a dozen people who’d rather be painting, playing sports or singing then lugging around piles of textbooks.
So you fill in your bubbles, never with a mechanical pencil, write your name/date/block at the top of each paper and get all OCD over your binder. And every nine weeks, you get a nice piece of paper from your homeroom teacher telling you how wonderfully/awfully you filled in the bubbles, one grade for each textbook, more or less. And at the bottom, there’s a nice little number, telling you everything you need to know about your future. Have fun in community college, Mr. 2.1.
As if our entire future being compressed into two digits weren’t enough insult to not only our intellect but those who worked to create a good educational system. But I’m not complaining about that, because there’s not much someone like me, even with life compressed into two happy high digits can do about that. Why I’m wasting good free cell phone calling time is because I have an issue with the couple of words beside the one letter assessing my bubble-filling.
“A pleasure to have in class.” “You are a conscientious worker.” “Great effort! Keep it up!”
I’ve accepted and dished out my share of empty compliments, but this really tops “those shoes really look nice on you”. Jenny’s hideous choice of footwear isn’t really going to matter when she gets into college. That 3.8, however, determines whether she’s going to even have money to spend on horrid shoes. And to have something as meaningless as “Good understanding of material” next to the letters telling me what college, if any, I’m going to get into, adds insult to injury, so to speak.
I understand the intentions of these little phrases. Notes such as “limit your talking” and “performance is inconsistent” should tell the parent whether their child is just goofing off in class or actually getting somewhere. They try to explain why that letter is so far down in the alphabet.
In case you hadn’t already gathered, I think they – in the words of today’s youth – fail epically, especially the positive notes. Yeah, so not paying attention may lead to a D, say experts. But less than five words aren’t really going to convince me to quit passing notes if I’m really that determined to flunk.
Those who complain without a solution suck, to abridge most lectures my parents give me. Here’s my solution to my complaint. Scratch those five words. They mean nothing. For a school program that promotes diversity, uniqueness and intelligence as much as ours should know that a list of maybe twenty phrases aren’t going to apply to every student. Probably none of them, actually. When you translate these sugar coated comments, they end up pretty general.
“Limit your talking” means shut up.
“Performance is inconsistent” means you should study more.
“A pleasure to have in class” means you aren’t being too noisy.
They’re a offense to both the student and the teacher. So is it really so much of a big deal to have the teacher write their own comments? Would it require hours of extra time? I’m all for people going home early, but this is our lives, people. Teachers signed up to teach, not hand out empty phrases with empty letters and empty numbers. So a little sincerity, a little less sugar coating and a little more meaning would be appreciated. Little tips could be embedded in the comments to show how the student can raise their grade. “You would probably do better if you studied your grammar each night, that’s what’s really getting you down.” “You’re such a good writer! Your poetry is amazing!” vs. “Improve your use of class time” and “Often contributes to class”. Sincerity 1, Empty words, 0.

Very nice, Beavo… and disturbingly accurate. Last year I got my English exam back with 63/63 and “Very nice” written on it. My maths exam had comments such as “More participation in class” and “Contributes to school community”. I mean, what the cake? How on earth did I participate in class by sitting there reading a book while the teacher was talking? And my art exam was the big kicker, because it came back all correct, but with “Needs more work” and “study harder” on it, and it turned out that the marks were correct but that the teacher had mixed up the comments with a few other people and the comments were so generic and unspecific that nobody noticed!

I assume you’re talking about Cleopatra Philopator VII, who is the famous Cleopatra that married Marc Anthony and whose empire fell to Augustus Caesar. In that case, togas would have been invented before Cleopatra because the Roman Empire was established before she was born. So no, she doesn’t predate togas. There were, however, at least eight women by the name of Cleopatra (and one was her sister, one was her mother, and another her daughter), so maybe the first one was before togas. That I don’t know. I’m starting Tanzschule today…I don’t think you have them in America, or at least not the ones for teens to the same extent, but you basically go there to learn ballroom dancing and etiquette. 36. Midnight Fiddler says:

Just one quick note on early fashion, the term “corset” comes into use in the early 19th century, but at that point the corset is a less boned version than the stays (stays, jumps, woman’s weskit [waistcoat] or other name used for the same or similar garments) dominant for the past hundred years or so. It was snugly laced and had (forgive me if I’m being too graphic) er, extra allowance in the bust to allow for the high waisted “Empire” fashions (Federal period, for us Americans). Though this was called a corset, it’s not the whole waist constricting deal we associate with the word now.
The fashion of 16″ waists happens later, where we get the horror stories of ladies fainting because of their restrictive undergarments.

But please remember, when looking at any aspect of past times, don’t generalize. There is incredible diversity now, and there was just as much then. Often that diversity isn’t apparent to us, because we don’t take the time to look deeper into the sources available (or, unfortunately, not always so readily available).
Just try to imagine what our own culture will look like to people hundreds of years from now, and imagine the confusion they may feel when trying to define the “normal” 21st century teenager. Mmhmm. Just looking at our MB community you can see how difficult that would be. Look at the past on the same way, and you’ll find that history becomes a lot more interesting.

Alright, my rant is over. You can wake up now. ;)

    • You make an excellent point. My mom used to complain about the stereotypes of 1950s fashions, in particular the sort portrayed in Grease. She said neither she nor anyone she knew dressed that way. So if we’re prone to narrowing down to a single stereotype a decade for which tons of documentation exist and that many living people still remember first hand, anything in the deeper past is likely to be given even more cursory treatment.

Unfortunately, that narrow vision applies to more than fashion. Through my day job, I see this all the time in relation to the history of slavery in the United States — and the history of antislavery as well. We miss a lot of opportunities to learn valuable information from the past by confining it to such narrow stereotypes. (Excuse the speechifying; I’ve been doing a lot of talking on the subject this week.)

37.1.1 – Ha, I’m a 7th grade girl in band…so far we haven’t done anything that crazy though. And yes, that is very weird…

Well, today I had my band chair tests (Clarinet) and it went ok I guess. We had to play some sections out of the songs and then the basic scales, so it wasn’t like it was terribly hard or anything but it’s been a week since I picked up a clarinet so I felt a little rusty but overall alright. I’m guessing I’ll be towards the middle-ish because most of the 8th graders will probably be in the front with the exception of two girls who just joined like me, only they’re actually worse which is kind of surprising…I didn’t think anyone COULD get much worse, but oh well. Then there are a few 7th graders who are a definite first/second row, and then finally me, the two 8th graders, and the rest of the 7th grade who will all fill in the end of the 2nd row and then 3rd and possibly 4th.

We have a ton of clarinet players, probably more than this band has ever seen. It’s not horrible though because all it really means is that air playing isn’t so obvious, (I actually do usually play, but air playing can be helpful sometimes…hee hee hee) and because the section is so loud it covers up all my squeaking. I’m terrible…

Sorry, long post. I’m done ranting, I promise!!

    I officially love my computer.
I did before, but I do three times as much now. At least.
I was doing a picture for MuseBlog, which I plan on sending in, but that’s a different story, and I left to do school. I forget exactly what happened, but I left to do school, and when I came back, my computer was acting weird. It was on, which I knew because I pressed caps lock, and it lit up, but it wasn’t exactly awake and it wasn’t exactly asleep either. The screen was black, (Yes, I tried to turn up the brightness,) but the light that showed it was asleep wasn’t on. It was puzzling. Anyway, after a while of trying to get it out of its coma, I finally just restarted it, which worked just fine, proving my computer wasn’t completely dead. By this time I’d forgotten about my drawing. I got the computer up and running, and had just verified that it worked just fine, when I suddenly remembered my drawing, which, I might add, is one of the best I’ve ever done, and I was extremely proud of it. It hadn’t lasted through the restart. I’ve actually had my computer preserve document changes through having the battery taken out, while the computer was running, so it wasn’t entirely a vain hope. But the document was gone. I closed the computer in frustration, went and did something else, which frustrated my further, and came back to search desperately through my computer in case it had, in fact, survived and I just had to find it. And I did find it!! It was there, in all its not-so-great-but-my-best-ever splendor. I was thrilled!

Anyways, thanks for staying with me through that long, wandering, post. I’m going to go save my picture now.

It really wouldn’t do anything. It was scary, especially since I’ve had a computer crash on my for no apparent reason before. I’m slightly paranoid since that happened.
I think my computer’s done it before too, but this was weird, because usually I could just put it to sleep again and it’d wake up.

Being Luke Skywalker’s cousin or Batman’s secret protege would definitely seem Sue-ish in a Star Wars or DC fan-fic.

My question is if it’s also Sue-ish if the character is descended from a real-life famous person, even if they play no part in the history of the parent series? The Black Widow from Marvel is supposed to be descended from the Romanovs and nobody complains. Would you consider an otherwise non-offending character a Mary Sue if they were Nikola Tesla’s grandson or a student of (some famous athlete)?

Ha, got it! When my family and I went to the UK this summer, we stayed for a night in Bath, and, when we took a walk around the town in the evening, we found a beautiful park/garden, but there was a fee to enter, and it had closed for the day. While we were looking down into it, we saw a statue of a violinist in it, and we were dying to know who it was. I just remembered that and did some research, and it turned out to be Mozart. I should’ve been able to figure that out from the birds around his feet, but I feel better now that I know who it is.

I loved Bath. It was beautiful.

I would love to go back, and have a more leisurely trip, getting to do things more on my schedule than on our choir tour’s schedule. Being with choir meant that everything was super rushed, and you never got to spend as much time as you would’ve like on anything. Like the Tower of London. We had less than 2 hours there, which wasn’t anywhere near enough time. But, still, it was great fun.

I am sick. I went to bed at nine-thirty last night and slept for twelve hours straight, which led to the revelation that I would probably recover quickly if left to my own devices, but because of school and getting up early, my illness will just stretch on…and on…and on… all the way into my next cold, which will do the same thing and so on through February. This is naturally lamentable, but I don’t see that there’s anything I can do about it, beyond drinking lots of herbal tea and eating good food, which I intend to do.

So must-go-to’s are the Museum of Science and Industry, The Shedd, take a walk down Navy Pier (if you’re there around Halloween it can look really cool, and there’s fireworks every… wednesday night? Not sure, but once a week there are some). The Art Institute and Field Museum are also good, as TMFA and Oxlin said.

Millennium Park is also a must, right near The Field and the lakefront, and doesn’t take much time to walk though. I don’t think they have the ice rink set up out there yet. However the Crown Fountains may have been turned off because it’s getting colder : /

Also, if you’re on Michigan Avenue, if you want to take a quick nip into the Chicago Architecture Museum it’s got a great model of chicago in it.

And if you need to get from place to place quickly and don’t feel like walking, the L (elevated trains) are very easy to navigate and don’t have too bad of a rate.

May there be friendless, fairness, and piece
For everyone in the whole wide world

One’s skin color or the amount of things one may possess

When it has to be done
Whether we like it or not
We like to share because it is friendly
We like to be friendly and to share
Without honesty, there can be no friendliness

Best “cake” ever. Except my family for some reason thinks they are entitled to it as well.

Poll: If you buy something, or ingredients for something and make it, can you reasonably except it to be yours? Because in my house no matter what I get it seems to get declared communal property aka my sister takes whatever she wants when she wants and nothing gets done about it. Same with my space. I wouldn’t really know where else to put this, but this is the random thread and I thought it was quite interesting…

When he was a young child, he, and all the other children at the orphanage, were told a story.

The tale was that you could see from the color of someone’s iris how many life experience they have had.

    Babies are mostly born with the brightest, bluest eyes;
They have not seen any horrors in the short time they are alive.

    People with green eyes were fighters;
It was once their destiny to receive blue eyes, but an evil higher power ruined it by pushing them in constant struggles. Bad things were thrown onto their path of life.

    Brown eyes signified that the person was normal;
Leading normal lives, they would be good at one thing, but never continue on it. They would live and die peacefully, but would be perfectly normal.

    Those who’s eyes changes colour could never fit in for long;
They would forever flit from place to place, never able to stay somewhere for long. They would eventually become outcasts.

The weirdest of all must have been humans with black-coloured eyes.
The deep coloured circles represented unjust; The story told that the poor people who were given black eyes; would spend their life seeing awful terrors happen upon the ones they loved, but were safe themselves.

along comes SAturday morning, aforementioned individual does not show up, I miss the thing, which I guarantee you is not going to have gone over well, at all. And this volunteer stuff is for a grade. So, today,. he presents his really crappy excuse to me (crappy, as his excuse did not involve his death or admission into the hospital, or some such other thing that I MIGHT have been incline to accept). No, his excuse was he had to drive a buddy to a neighboring city about 1.5-2 hours away (not sure how far, exactly, I’ve never been), and he thought he could drive him and get back in time, but it took longer than he thought.

“And I forgot my phone at my house, so I was driving back feeling like an ***hole the the whole time, because I couldn’t call you and let you know.”

True. Very true. Some dictionaries have, after all, added fictional words to themselves (for instance, I’ve heard that the Oxford English Dictionary has added he word “muggle”. XD).

              • Oh, “muggle” is fine. It’s part of the language now.

One reason I draw the line at “hungover” is that analogy is a powerful force in shaping a language, and I’d rather not see “laidover,” “rolledover,” “wipedout,” “blownout,” “takendown,” “liftedoff,” “flaredup,” etc.

Another is that people don’t really say “hungover,” do they? They say “hungover,” with the accent on the second syllable and a slight pause before it. To me, that indicates that they’re really speaking a separate word.

I hate to break anymore bad news what with Piggy and Luna already down in the dumps, but I have to admit, I am seriously mad right now, and it’s not even for a good reason, which just makes me even madder!!!! Argh. I guess I should explain:

You probably already know by now that my school life with friends hasn’t exactly been the best, right? Well, if you don’t, now you know. Anyway, now there’s this girl who is apparently “so mad at me she wants to kill me” and she won’t even tell me why. She’s told some of my other friends, who won’t tell me because they’re sworn to secrecy apparently and are friends with this other girl too. I mean, C’MON! If you’re going to be THAT upset with me, at least tell me why! I honestly can’t even figure out what I ever did to her, although one of my friends told me it’s because she thinks I’m trying to be something. But what?!?!?!

I’m trying to just let it go because I know it’ll all blow over eventually, but still! These are my friends, I’m talking about – not enemies. Unfortunately, this isn’t the first time it’s happened – the same girl has gotten pretty mad at some other people too, and similar situations have happened. It’s always been alright in the end, but I definitely don’t want to be with this girl anymore, and I won’t. And I don’t care if she pleads for my apology, I’m not giving it, and certainly not until I get a fair response as to why I’m supposed to give one.

I have a hunch it’s about this guy that I (sort of) like, which makes me even more upset, because usually this girl gets upset at other people because of guys, and it drives me crazy!! Ahhh!

OK, I’m done. I’ll stop ranting now. *deep breaths* *deep breaths turn into sobs* *sobs* 7th grade sucks.

She was friends with this girl who didn’t like me and was acting on her behalf, and it just turned into a jumbled mess. I guess what I’m trying to say is that it’ll blow over eventually. People eventually get bored and move on. They need a new angle (like Rita Skeeter kept changing Harry Potter’s image so people would continue to read The Daily Prophet) to keep themselves entertained.

I double checked with my other friends though, and they said that she’s definitely mad at me, and I trust them so I believe it. -Take the Metro to the Mall
-Eat a ridiculously overpriced lunch at the American History Museum

-See JOHN MCCAIN exiting the Capitol
-Go inside Capitol, take underground tunnel to Library of Congress

ENGLISH: If someone asks, “How are you?” Is the response, “I’m good,” or, “I’m well?” I know that you can say, “I am good,” in general, but in this context, for a feeling, would “well” be correct? (Sorry for all of the quotations…)

SPANISH: When talking about being “at” something, like “la mesa,” or, “la caja,” when do you use “al/a la?” And when do you use, “en?” (Even my Spanish teacher is baffled! She’s a native speaker, so if you give her a word, she’ll tell you, but she can’t say why.)

Rain is wonderful, I really do love it. Particularly when it disturbs a monstrosity like football. Give me a good basketball game (in a nice, indoor court) any day. I love basketball. Right up there with rain. I love watching it (as well as baseball), though I don’t follow any sports. The way I see it, if I’m not playing, and neither are my friends or anyone I care about, why should I care? (Though I’d root for Philadelphia teams, or Boston.)

*snork* Sounds like the football game last night was lots of fun. Not. Oh, sorry, I suppose I’m not supposed to be finding it utterly hilarious that a) it was pouring rain and everybody who went was soaked and freezing or that b) the power at the stadium went out during the game and they lost power to their multimillion dollar TV screen (hello? Gimme a decent scholarship instead, and forget the TV) or that c) We lost. Horribly.

Of course, I am finding it dreadfully amusing. Hehe, I have no school spirit…..I’m just glad that the power didn’t go out in my dorm, because then I wouldn’t have been able to, uh, well, to have spent the entire evening (OK, the entire afternoon from 2-midnight) watching Torchwood. My power did flicker very, very, very briefly, just off than on so fast it didn’t kill any appliances, and so fast you’d almost think you just blinked and imagined it….

Anyway, yeah, we lost the game. And no, not that game, although that game can’t be any less interesting than football…..

So, my hair feels awfully short, even though it’s still like 18 inches long. I have lice, (Boo!) So I had to cut off about 6 inches. (Boo!) Turns out it was about 25 inches long (Yay!) but now it isn’t. (Boo!) I had a lot of lice, but thanks to a wicked awesome nit comb, (from nitpickers, I think) and a super awesome method that our friend gave us (take a shower, then dry yourself off and get dressed, but don’t entirely dry your hair, then put white conditioner in before using the nit combs, especially tea-tree oil shampoo, because you can see the lice and eggs and nits and such really well, and they hate tea-tree oil, and it kind of immobilizes them…) I have a LOT less now. But still, my hair feels so short. :( Oh, well, it’ll grow back…
My posts seem to be getting longer. I bet it’s because of my iPod. (My dad got an iPhone, thanks to an old We Owe You certificate from my family (one iPhone or one GPhone (Whatever happened to those? Seems like they were competing for a while, and for a bit I think I actually thought the GPhone was going to win, but I guess not) or one pair of good boots. ), so now I get to use his iPod Shuffle, as the only member of my family who didn’t have an iPod already. (Besides my mom, and she HATES earbuds, (can’t stand the feel of them in her ears)) Anyway, it’s one of those super small ones, so small the plug for the USB is the same as the plug for the earbuds, and it has the control buttons on the wire for the right ear on the earbud. (Let’s see how many more times I’ll use the word “earbud” in this post. So far, including plurals, 5.) I thought it would be really hard to get the hang of the controls, but it really isn’t. I like Shuffles because you don’t really feel obliged to decide what you’re going to listen to. This is the Shuffle that talks to you, and it’s funny to hear how it pronounce the names of the songs. So far, the best ones are ‘Oh! Darling, by the Beatles” (He said “Oh” as if he were surprised, and as if Darling was a separate sentence) and “Rocky Rock-hoon”. Which sort of makes sense, if you think about it… And it pronounces my name (Jonah) as “Jowmnah”. )
Anyway, that parenthesed phrase (What’s the proper term for that?) was definitely longer than justifiable, and probably should not have been in parentheses, but what the heck. My point was supposed to be that I’m definitely wearing this for NaNoWriMo.
My posts are definitely getting longer, and are tending to get very off-track. Apologies to all.

And season 3 of Dr. Who is making a nice change from Torchwood, as well. Don’t get me wrong, season 1 of Torchwood was absolutely brilliant, but….I’ve got a bit of a love-hate relationship going on with it at the moment. Whether that has anything at all to do with the fact that i watched an entire season (13 episdoes of it) in slightly less more than a 24 hour timespan, i don’t know. I do know it has something to do with the fact that every episode, no matter how brilliant, is absolutely depressing. The last episode had me in tears, several others had me nearly there. Thus the “hate” part, but John Barrowman’s performance, god, he’s absolutely brilliant as Capt. Jack Harkness…..Thus the “love” part.

Anyways, i’m rambling, so, yeah, back to my Dr. Who watching–maybe I’ll get through season 3 of Dr. Who tomorrow, and then can start season 2 of Torchwood…..Hmmm, wow, I’ve not watched a single of my regular TV programs this entire week, ever since I watched my first Dr. Who episode last Sunday. Now that’s disconcerting…….

More about the Atari 2600 that I will hopefully be buying soon: The Atari 2600 was released in 1977. To put this in perspective, video game-wise, this was three years before the arcade game Pac-Man was released, and almost a decade before the first Nintendo. The Atari 2600 was technically the second console to use removable game cartridges, though the first was an overall flop. Without the Atari 2600, the video game industry would not exist, or exist in a very different form. It has 128 bytes of internal RAM, and each cartridge holds 4 kB.

Alright, I don’t have experience in this but here’s what I want to say. There are people here who do have more experience than me so my advice will probably be less helpful but here it is anyway

First of all, you have all of us. You do not need to be ashamed (in any sense) to talk to us about problems you have. I regularly complain about stupid things here and people are always willing to sympathize and so on.
I’m glad you told us about this though. I think it’s good to talk about it whatever it is. However I know that isn’t going to totally solve a problem and sometimes makes you feel worse…
So I would think to myself, what’s bothering me? Why do I feel this way? When you feel depressed it’s really easy to start firing off all of the flaws you think you have, and everything wrong with yourself comes to mind. But there are usually reasons you feel so low. It an help to pinpoint why it is, so it’s not just this big monstrous thing hanging over your head.
Maybe it would help to talk more with Armada, and she can tell us if you like, or you could post here if you don’t mind. It’s totally up to you though. I can’t help much but I hope you know what a wonderful person you are.

Zinc, I know you don’t want this, but it might be kind of a good idea to talk to someone in real life. We’ll always be here for you, but it’s kind of hard for us to help you when we can only talk to you through text on MB or… other places. ;) And it might be nice to talk to someone whose voice you can actually hear and who can actually hug you and physically hide the kitchen utensils from you….
I really don’t know what to say, but… I agree with Bookgirl. You should at least try to like yourself. That was about the hardest thing I’ve ever done, but after being depressed for four years, I managed it this summer because I finally realized that there are people who love me for who I am. Zinc-chan, all of us love you for who you are, too. I wish I could actually be there for you in real life, but since that’s probably not possible, at least try talking to one of your IRL friends, or something. I’m not telling you to Talk To An Adult, or Go To Therapy, or any of that crap, okay? Just… someone whose voice you can actually hear. Maybe you could convince your parents to let you get vidchat so you can talk to Rainbow?
Anyway, I know how you feel–actually, I may have had it worse than you. (It’s kind of nice to know that someone has it worse, huh?) I had absolutely no friends for three years. I swear. But you’ve got great friends, here and in real life. I know this probably sounds like psychobabble, but… my mom said stuff like this for four years, and it finally worked, even though I thought it was absolute crap at the time.

Anyway, when I arrived there they were partway through Sorting us. They actually had a Sorting Hat there, which spoke, although I’m fairly sure it was random. I was Hufflepuff, which is rather funny since I’ve always thought that if I went to Hogwarts, I’d be in Hufflepuff. Anyway, so then we ate supper, (They actually had Butterbeer and pumpkin juice!) played a bunch of games, (My legs are sore from one of them. Long story.) had a Silly String fight, (Insane fun!) played Sardines, (Also insane fun!) and watched movies for the rest of the night. Harry Potter, naturally. I just had a really crappy day. First of all, I only got four hours of sleep last night so I was terribly crabby and tired all day. Then I get to school, realise I’ve lost my English paper, and totally freak out. Just to make everything better, a friend comes up and says, “Oh, you’re in my elective!” (which is Creative Writing, BTW), so I get all happy, but then I go read the electives list and it turns out I am not in the writing elective with all my friends, but in an boring art elective with no one I know. Then I go to lunch and my friend and I get in trouble because we didn’t throw our trash away ( ), and the luch moderator tells us to wait behind, and then she forgets about us so we’re late to class. Bleh…

That’s all crossed out because I just read about Zinc and I feel really bad about complaining now. *slips off to the Hot Topics thread*

Yeah, I’m still partial to Rose myself. And have definitely gotten very into Dr. Who, although I think I’m actually more into Torchwood. I dunno, I just took a liking to Capt. Jack Harkness in the very first episode he was in on Dr. Who, back in season 1, and I followed him over to Torchwood…..

Of course, Torchwood is so much darker, and very depressing and horrible at the same time it’s utterly hilarious and brilliant, so it has me laughing one second, on the verge of tears the next. But, in a twisted way, I absolutely love it…..Of course, the season finale of season 2 had me very, very, very close to tears. I would’ve been in tears if I hadn’t been afraid my roomie would walk in any moment. *sigh* I think I said it earlier, I’ve definitely got a love/hate relationship going with it……You’d have to watch it to understand.
