Random Thread: Strange New World

Part One.

Continuing MuseBlog’s whirlwind tour of human history, the March Random Threads celebrate the Maya: artists, astronomers, mathematicians, warriors, independent inventors of zero, builders of palaces and temples amid the forest, players of a cosmic ball game, aficionados of human sacrifice.

I’ve been gone a few days and have missed so much. The skiing was nice but very slushy. Yes, I need to work on my technique.

New Moon- No way I’m seeing it. Bad acting + german dub (OV=more expensive) + fangirls… Nightmare^10

Justin Bieber- *shudder* His last bame is Beaver. Enough said.

Why we can’t stop talking about the people- Because you can “laester” about them so well (talk about them behind their backs is prolly the best translation).

Missing people who’ve left- It’s part of it, I guess. The crowd of MBers has changed a ton since I was a ‘phyte (which is probably a good thing, considering) and I remember/miss many who’s visits have grown scarce. But we also get new ‘phytes, and it evens out. What’s with the ‘death’ part? Whatever they’re doing now, I’m sure they have better english grades XD

Somehow it doesn’t bother me as much. I guess it’s part of growing up as a crusing kid- every time I made friends, I knew that someday we would part ways and that I’d never see them again or that we’d have changed so much that there was nothing left. I’ve never had a friend for more than 3 years.

I bet the HBPs enjoyed human sacrifices…

It is doubtful that this phrase will ever reach equilibrium.

I’ve got a question for you guys, but I didn’t know where to put it, so I’m putting it here.

What is everyone’s opinion on plastic surgery?
I’m very opinionated about this- in my opinion, beauty is within, not on the outside. Beauty is the fact that everyone is different.
And plastic surgery makes everyone look the same- which is not beauty. Besides, from what I’ve heard about it, it’s extremely painful. Why would anyone want to suffer such pain, only to look like everyone else?

I got braces, because apparently if I hadn’t gotten them, I would have developed serious mouth problems, i.e. some of my baby teeth wouldn’t have come out, one of the teeth that couldn’t come in was grinding away at one of my bones, and apparently because I didn’t get braces sooner, I will have gum problems later in life. 17. Luna the Lovely says:

Robert, you’re an editor. In the following two sentences, is it acceptable to have the first letter after the colon capitalized? I did so on my mythology paper, and my [non-native english speaking] TA circled them and de-capitalized them. I don’t know how much she actually took off for that, but….According to my English manual, “When an independent clause follows a colon, it may begin with a lowercase or a capital letter.” So….types of clauses and all that stuff are not my strong point. I can’t write a grammatically correct paper, but I can’t tell you what sort of clause something is (oops).

Basically, I just want to know if my capitalization after the colons are correct, because if so I shall go hunt down my TA and see if she’ll give me back some points….

    The sentences in question:

Not all of the immortals Zeus freed, however, responded with loyalty: The Titans instead chose to wage war upon the children of Kronos.

The importance of the seasons is the most obvious: They are necessary for the survival of humans, leading to the seasonal planting and harvesting of crops.

    Thanks ever so much!!!!!

    Pie 0
    Squid 0
    • Here, an “independent clause” just means a string of words that could stand alone as a complete sentence. In your examples, both of the clauses after the colons are independent.

The policy on capitalizing independent clauses after colons varies from style book to style book and from publication to publication. Some magazines forbid it; others require it. Some require it only if the colon “launches” a thought that continues past the end of the sentence. I used to have strong opinions about it, but nowadays I’m more practical and just do whatever the magazine I’m working for likes to do.

In your case, if there’s a specific style guide your papers are supposed to follow, then use it. Otherwise, I’d say you’re free to do whatever you want. I’d be surprised if your T.A. counted off for those sentences. En certainly shouldn’t.

Now, dependent clauses (sentence fragments) following a colon are simpler. Everybody agrees that you never capitalize them.

      Pie 0
      Squid 0
      • Luna the Lovely says:

Okay, that was what I was kind of thinking an independent clause was…..

The directions for our paper(s) don’t actually specify any particular style guide that we’re supposed to use….And I guess I don’t actually know for sure that my TA took off any points, just that she circled both capital “T”s and wrote next to them, “the” and “they”, respectively. Which I guess could either mean she believes it wrong and took off points, or just that she believes it wrong, but did not take off points….

        *sigh* I really don’t like her….

Vanillabean (28 on last thread): That’s fine, thanks so much! Miyuki is….. a bit unemotional at times, as she’s half made of ice. However, she does feel love, and she’s fiercely protective of that love. After several bad experiences, she’s taken to secretly stalking her crushes instead of actually talking to them, because every time she’s confessed they haven’t felt anything for her, and it upsets her. To the point of her going crazy and freezing over the entire town and pelting everybody with giant icicles. I was planning to, well, basically have her stalk Kenji, meaning she unwittingly finds out stuff about the CotD but doesn’t realize what it means for a long time.

Would anyone like to take over Morgana or Ikora? They were my other “main” characters, and they may actually both commit suicide at some point, as they’re both depressive. Morgana is basically a really, really goth/emo Rue (look her up, she’s from Princess Tutu and I might be cosplaying her! woot!), and Ikora is…. a depressed trickster. Think Luke-ish, except not.

Rhia will kind of quietly fade into the background. You can occasionally mention her if you like. Cleo, same, but mention her a bit more, as she’s kinda hyper and makes friends veeeeeerry easily. Kenji…. you don’t really need to RP him, he’s just there as Miyuki’s love interest.

Well, I’ve got my wish list for next semester figured out. Now I just have to hope that everything I want to take is still open come Friday morning when I’m allowed to register for class (registration started today, but my date isn’t until Friday morning).

    I’m taking:
Spanish (3rd semester of it in college)
Physics (which has lecture, discussion section, and lab)
Animal physiology (lecture and 4 hour lab)
    Animal Handling and Restraint
Accountancy (because mom thinks this would be a good course to take if I intend to eventually open my own vet clinic. Which I do. Eventually. When I’m no longer hundreds of thousands of dollars in debt as I will be when I finish college)

So, yeah. I’m going to be pretty busy, but Wednesday’s and Friday’s will be so very nice, because even though I have an 8 o’clock MWF, on WF, my last class gets out at 11. I will get up horribly early, have 3 hours of class, have a quick lunch, then return to my room for a nap. And hopefully get some stuff accomplished in the afternoons…..

    Pie 0
    Squid 0
    • Luna the Lovely says:

Urgh, pretty busy is an understatement. This semester, I have:

Monday: 5 hours in class (5 classes)
      Tuesday: 2 (2 classes)
      Wednesday: 4 (4 classes)
      Thursday: 4 (2 classes–orgo lab being 3 hours)
      Friday: 4 (4 classes)

      Next semester I will have:

      Monday: 5 hours 20 minutes (4 classes–physics lab is 2 hours 20 minutes)
Tuesday: 7.5 oh, dear. (3 classes–4 hours of animal phys lab, 2.5 accounting in the evening, 1 of animal handling/restraint)
      Wednesday: 3 hours (3 classes)
      Thursday: 4 hours (2 classes–animal handling/restraint lab: 3 hours)
      Friday: 3 hours

That means I’m jumping from a semester of 19 hours in class (which seemed a huge jump from last semester, were I think I only had 15 hours) to a semester of 22 hours 50 minutes….Urgh, I don’t like labs. Last semester (for my 15 hours in class), I was taking 15 credit hours. This semester, for 19 hours in class, still only 15 credit hours (a four hour spike in actual hours, none in credit hours….stupid), and then jumping to 17 credit hours next semester for nearly another 4 hour spike in actual class time….. I am going to be so busy….

On the bright side, accounting I don’t think will be too difficult–I mean, mostly probably a lot of relatively basic math, some new concepts introduced, but probably not something that I find horribly hard. Animal handling/restraint, I’m not foreseeing a huge amount of actual out of class work, and the class itself should probably be fairly interesting.

Animal phys I think will be hard, but hopefully fun, too, especially lab. I mean, it’s gotta be dissections and stuff, what else would a 4 hour lab for an animal phys class be???? *likes dissections* And on the bright side, taking an animal phys class now is supposed to make animal phys in vet school easier, as it will be a lot of review. So maybe my first year/semester of actual vet med will be less stressful….*hopes*

Physics: I’ve heard the teacher sucks. Probably mainly because nobody can understand her, I think. She’s asian, and from the Asian teachers I’ve ahd previously in college…..yeah.

Spanish….Well, it’s more foreign language. Foreign language just sucks, in general….

Those show up because each tab is a separate process–that does a lot of good by way of usage. If one tab crashes, the rest are fine. It also adds a lot to page security; one tab can’t see what another tab is doing (which is a tactic often used to steal personal information from people).

Today, we dissected cow eyes in science class. It was awesome! When we snipped off the front part of the eye, all the vitreous humor oozed out and made everything a bit slimy and slippery, but it was still fun! I peeled off the retina in the back of the eye to see the tapetum, (I think that’s how you spell it…) and it was really neat! It looked like mother of pearl, all iridescent and blueish green. The lens was cool, too, it was like a little misshapen marble. I peeled off the iris to get a look at it, and made an incision in the cornea and all the aqueous humor leaked out (actually, first we made the incision, then snipped off the front part, then pulled out the lens, then peeled off the iris, then the retina) Then I had to help clean up all 30 of the dissection trays, but that was okay, because my friend was helping me. ‘Twas fun.

    1. Conflict of interest with his theory and composition teacher! She wants the piece he’s writing to be syncopated, and not moving together! Enc happens to like it moving together! Not just like, but prefer it! And, it’s my piece.

    2. He can’t count out loud and play the piano at the same time! He can grunt monosyllabicly, but not say “One Two Three and For and a” while playing the piano! It takes most of my concentration just to find the blasted note, let alone think!

    3. For some reason, Enc is more and more timid than he usually is! He barely whispers, and is invisible, and freezes in the headlights of anybody looking at him!

    4. Enc has been blessed with a headache! Self explanatory.

    5. Enc has been blessed with a cold too! Self explanatory.

Urgh. I’m really, really tired suddenly…..but I’ve got so much I need to do before bed (study mythology).

But first, my afternoon: As a pre-vet scholar, we’ve got to do various sorts of rounds, and I’m on lab animal this semester. So today we had a rodent handling lab, where we learned how to restrain guinea pigs, hamsters, rats, and mice.

The mice we also practiced SQ (subcutaneous, aka right under the skin) injections and IP (interperotoneal (sp?) which is in the abdominal cavity) injections with them awake. We then anesthetized them via an SQ injection, and once they were awake, we practiced IM (intramuscular, aka in the muscle) injections. Additionally, we pricked the vein on the backs of their hind legs with a needle then wicked it up in capillary tubes, and gave an IV injection in the little itty bitty vein in their tails. That was fun.

Of course, the not so fun part: The mice were all going to be euthanized, so we first practiced a cardiac blood draw (which is fatal, as with mice you can only remove about 0.2 mLs of blood). Then, to ensure they were dead we did what was called “cervical dislocation”, where you take your fingers (or blunt scissors) and squeeze their neck right at the base of their skull, until the spinal cord is severed when the head snaps off the spine….*shudder* That felt really weird, and I was squeezing so hard and nothing was happening…..But then it suddenly separated, and….Yeah. I’d much rather nice, fatal injections to euthanize something than the equivalent of snapping its neck….Anyway.

Still, it was really fun/cool, and even the cervical dislocation really didn’t bother me much when I actually did it….

Next week we’re doing a rodent necropsy lab.

    Excerpt from “Earthlight”:

Naomi sat riveted in her seat, because even though she was a super-brilliant and amazingly talented ace reporter who was also jaw-droppingly beautiful and utterly fantastic and perfect in every other way, she had never heard any of what she was hearing right now before. (That’s why she was hearing it right now.)

“So you see, instead of conventional rocket motors, our ship will use a VASIMR thruster. That stands for VAriable Specific Impulse Magnetospheric Rocket.”

“Ohhhh Arthur, you’re so good at acronyms. Please tell me more!”

“Well, I didn’t make the name up, Franklin Chang-Diaz did.” Arthur said, flashing a smile that briefly revealed his fangs.

“Oh. Well, whoever he is, he could never be as absolutely gorgeous as you. But go on, tell me why this rocket’s so special, because I’m stupid and weak and I don’t know anything!” Naomi sighed, lovingly.

“The VASIMR engine is many times more efficient than chemical rockets. It turns gas like neon or xenon into superheated plasma, which is then expelled through the magnetic nozzle. And our spacecraft is nuclear powered, giving this drive plenty of energy to work its very best.”

    “Nuclear, Arthur? Is it DANGEROUS?”

“Well, besides the fact that you’re forgetting the whole immortal vampire part because you’re a silly bimbo, this nuclear generator has been highly tested and is completely safe.”

“I love you! Talk helicon physics to me!” Naomi shouted, ecstatic.

“The best part about VASIMR is that the trip to Mars-” Arthur gestured to the diagrams he had drawn on the whiteboard “-will take only three months, instead of the six available with current chemical rocket technology. Which means I get to come home to you a whole lot faster.” He turned to flash Naomi another fanged grin.

“Oh! My hero! You’re going to be the first man on Mars!” Naomi could take it no more, she ran up and embraced him. “I knew you were special different from all the other astronaut candidates the moment you stepped out of that T-38 with your skin sparkling like M45 and your eyes as dark as Barnard 33!”

I’m afraid that I don’t believe that MB is really like Narnia. Pretty much anybody, even if they have “grown up” is welcome on here. There are a few college aged people who still post regularly now, *coughlunacough* and certainly there are still many older-ish high schoolers on the ‘blog. I even know of one parent of a MBer who’s made an appearance! The point is that even if you consider yourself a “grown up” you’re still going to be welcome. Just because you have entered the scary realm of adulthood or even young adulthood does not restrict you from the site. I mean, look at the GAPAs! ;)

    Just my take on it.

Speaking of braces from before, I just went to the orthodontist…and it sounds like I’m supposed to get them soon. I still need to lose several baby teeth though, which is why they’re holding off but I still might need to get some pulled if they don’t hurry up. :( *wiggles teeth* Bummer. (I’ve always been a late bloomer – I lost my first tooth when I was almost 7 and I had to have a surgery about two years ago because one of them wasn’t coming up – long story, but it wasn’t fun. I also wore a retainer for about a year. And now braces too?!)

In a way, I just want to get them over with, because I really don’t want braces in high school, and a lot of my friends are already in and out of their braces, which isn’t like life threatening or anything, but my orthodontist said (For some reason I didn’t really catch) the sooner I get them on, the shorter of a time I might need them. If I wait too long, the time period of around 18 months that she estimated could lengthen, and I don’t want that.

So now I’m scheduled to go in for a “consultation”, whatever that might mean, to “talk” about them in about a month. My friends all say that they suck. I can imagine they’re pretty painful, but I’m sure I’ll deal. (Or be forced to, either one.) :( Thoughts?

My older sister had braces. When she was somewhere in her mid to late teens, she still had to baby teeth that were showing absolutely no signs of coming loose, as the adult teeth were showing no signs of coming in on their own (she’s always been slow with her teeth). The dentist/orthodontist recommended she get them pulled. She did, and didn’t really have any significant problems from that. I mean, I’m sure she had some minor pain, but I don’t remember her being in a lot of pain. At some point after that I think she had a retainer for a bit (but maybe I’m confused), and she definitely got braces to mess with her other teeth to ensure that the submerged adult teeth came in properly and that the gaps did not get filled in by her other teeth….

Anyway, I guess what I”m saying, is based on my memories of my sis’s teeth pulling/subsequent braces, it won’t be too bad. I mean, I doubt it’s *pleasant* by any means, but….

Then again, he might have been an odd-one-out sort of thing, but he said it wasn’t too bad. Afterwards he said that it just feels like you’ve got rocks on your teeth for awhile, and they’re sore for a few days (And every time they’re tightened) but other than that, it won’t be the worst thing that’s ever happened to me.

        I really hope he’s right.

So, just finished parent conferences with all my teachers. Comments were pretty good. My Language Arts teacher thinks I’m “brilliant”. (?) I don’t mind doing that but I’m scared the rest of the orchestra will hate me. Any other concertmasters out there who have ideas on how to please both my teacher (who apparently feels strongly about this) and the rest of the ensemble?

Anyway, on another note, I am seriously considering changing my blog name. I’m starting to like it less: I don’t feel it represents me (does that make sense?) well and it reminds me waaay too much of Twilight. Which I hate. (No offence to any Twilight-lovers out there). When I first started I just picked a name so I could start posting, having delayed long enough in the lurker zone. The question is, should I change it or not? I know it’s generally not recommended as it can get confusing and such, but I am genuinely starting to dislike it. I have a few other ideas in mind, but I’ll wait for others’ opinions on the matter before I put them forth. Should I or should I not, anyone? If no one says anything I will threaten to change it. This calls for a storytime. *clears throat*

Well, when I first came on I was one or two names as ‘phyte very briefly, mostly names that were rather corny chatroom-ish, such as “booklover17” and “crazyreader101” or something of that sort. I only posted once or twice under those names, seeing as I was still just beginning to post on the ‘blog and still knew very little about it. I quickly adapted the name “soccer starr” which sort of morphed and became my own signature name, and I liked it very much. I threatened to change it several times, but somebody always stopped me and these threats had no meaning in the end.

Eventually though I really began to dislike it seriously (Around the time I started having serious problems in soccer, and I barely wanted to think about it anymore) and I figured I should change it to something I would still like in three, four years or so and hopefully beyond. I shortened it to the less specific, but still wonderful, name of “starr.” I didn’t even make an announcement – I sort of just shortened it wordlessly and later explained the choice. It didn’t really cause much confusion because I still had the same avatar and starr obviously is similar to soccer starr. Now I’ve just stuck with the name and all’s been fine.

The point of this long rant is that in all honesty, it’s up to you. Personally I like bella the aviatrix, (It doesn’t remind me of twilight, actually I hadn’t even made the connection…) and it is just a name, but if you don’t like it and it’s bothering you than I would suggest changing it. Even though, yes, it can become confusing sometimes, just go ahead with it. Besides, we’ll still like you no matter what you choose. :)

      Ooh, dancing!
We were waltzing at theatre on Friday( there is a ballroom scene in the play). It was quite fun, except for I was paired with C, and C is just an awkward person to be around usually, and ballroom dancing is awkward for most of today’s society, and these awkwardnesses just fed off of each other, making the situation extremely awkward. This isn’t meant to insult C or anything, he’s a great guy, but dancing with him was awkward.

    Hello, MuseBlog!

I have been preparing a large campaign for a friend of mine that is running for the school’s student body! So far, we have produced hundreds of fliers and we have been posting them everywhere around the school and passing them out like people give beggars money on Christmas.

I may not post here often; I apologize heartily. I have been too busy with my many activities :( I’ve been getting into shape, running extremely long distances every day after school, and doing homework… and I’ve been on some IRC networks. I hope that you kids don’t mind.

The game has been somewhat ruined for me. For a while, everyone in theatre knew about the game, and would ocassionally lose it, resulting in the usual lighthearted ridicule by surrounding people, but eventually acouple kids started going up to everyone all the time saying “the game” or “don’t lose the game” or some related phrase, and it has gotten very annoying, causing most people to have less lightheartedness in their ridicule, and a few people who were previously really bothered by hose who said “I won the game” or “I don’t play the game” to start using those phrases around the people who bring up the game too much. That was a really long sentence.

And I’ve already ate all my chocolate and I financial difficulties from spending to much money celebrating my new increase, so how the bip! can I pay for capoeira without going to my parents, who are trying to figure out the divorce and everything and my sister and I are sort of drifting apart as well. And my acne is worse, and my nails are sort of chipping which even shows through nail polish, and the clothes I want to wear always seem to be somewhere else, and I don’t want to go shopping to buy more because I don’t want to have to see my face in the mirror again and I’m not proportioned like most of the skirts and blouses which I need. I guess my problems are probably summed up by the fact that everyone else already has other/worse ones and I should just shut up and deal with it, which is hard when you’re a hormonal teenager. After that, gee, why on earth don’t I go around smiling and looking like a total carebear.

Okay world, we need to talk.
Why is it that when I get an idea to do something, I somehow get alerted that it’s the “UP AND COMING” trend? I mean seriously, what the [insert euphemism of choice]?!

Take today. I put on a pair of overalls. I haven’t worn overalls for probably upwards of five years. For multiple reasons, but mostly that the one pair I liked didn’t fit. So today. Trying to figure out what to wear. See striped shirt. See a corner of greenish fabric. Dismiss greenish fabric, as I know it’s the overalls. See it again. Wonder. Haul them out, thrown ’em on with a striped shirt. Chop the bottoms off to adjust fit. Happiness. Makes plans to wear them more often.
Checks facebook. *gasp, shock, horror, annoyance*
Friend posted a picture she took from a recent fashion catalog. Of what? Yes. OVERALLS. (Granted, she was bemoaning the fact that they were there, but still.)
Anyway. Quick google search. “overalls 20–” autofill picks up “overalls 2010”. Becoming more and more suspicious.
    Hit enter.
*more gasping, shock horror and annoyance*
    SPRING 2010 TREND: OVERALLS!
Again, may I repeat, what the [enter euphemism of choice]?!?!

Anyway, world, like I said, we need talk.
Why is it when I had the idea to get my hair cut short (think: the Beatles haircut on a girl) that when researching I came to the realization that the fashion/hairstyle industry was, at that time, unbeknownst to me (seriously, I’m wayyy out of touch with pop culture), selling short hair as the NEXT BIG THING that ALL THE STARS were doing. Seriously? Really? Please.
And in the bra shop, noticing the “boy-shorts” type undies and thinking “hey, those look like they’d be comfy. Maybe next time we’re in here I’ll try out a pair”. Yeah, you guessed it. Not too long afterwards yahoo news is proclaiming that the thong’s heyday is past, and what’s replacing it? Oh, yeah, you probably guessed it. Boy-shorts.
    head@wall.

I ask you, am I ahead of the curve? Subliminally more tuned into pop-culture and the fashion industry that I thought? Or just catching on to the LAST time these things were the trend (and thus, several curves behind)?
    Sheesh.

Okay world, I’ve had my say. I’ll shut up now and watch you laugh at me.

The same thing happened to one of my friends a while back. I only learned about it afterwards but it was a shock nonetheless. She’s recovered now, and I think the thing that’s brought her back up is knowing that she has people that stood by her, and made sure she was alright. I think the best thing you can do for her now is making sure she knows she’s loved. Stick by her. Make sure she feels alright. It’s important for her to know that among the webs of insults and fragile relationships, she still has someone she can look to.

91~ Peary, I’m so sorry you and your friend are going through this. First of all, many, many, many hugs and boxes of choklit and much love to you both (and all your other friends and families as well).
As much as I wish virtually conveyed hugs and choklit and very real concern and love for you all could completely fix the situation, I know that it cannot.
I understand your shock, confusion and fright, they are entirely normal reactions to what has happened. It’s extremely serious, and I hope that your friend doesn’t try again.
You can help her, by offering support, by listening when she needs it (but not forcing her to talk). If she doesn’t want to talk about it now, give her time. She’s probably in shock right now as well, and possibly unable to cope with the fact that right now, had things gone slightly differently, she wouldn’t be alive. In time though, I’m willing to bet she’ll be more in need of sympathetic ears. Just be gentle but not overprotective. I’m sure you know all this, and I’m sure that you’re already doing these things. Just know that your friendship, love, care, and/or prayers (if you’re into that sort of thing, I don’t know) do make an impact on the lives of others.

And if you need to talk to anyone, MB is always here. I think I can safely say for the rest of the community, that as long as we’re breathing and have an internet connection, we’ll do any- and everything in our power to help each other out.

It’s pretty good. I mean, if you’re going expecting something pretty similar to the book? This isn’t it. I mean, it’s been quite awhile since I read Alice in Wonderland, but I’m fairly certain the “plot” was quite different than that of the movie.

That said, I still really enjoyed it. I went in expecting it to be different than the book, so I wasn’t particularly bothered. ((Which, considering how I feel about the relatively minor modifications to the HP books….))

If nothing else, it never ceased to make me laugh everytime Alan Rickman said “stupid girl”, or some other sort of insult, because I would flash back to that first Potions scene in the movies/books. “I can teach you how to brew glory, bottle fame, even stopper death–if you aren’t as big a bunch of dunderheads as I usually have to teach.” I love Rickman. He makes a totally awesome Snape. And it’s just so much fun to listen to him spewing insults, no matter the character. It’s his voice. I could just listen to him talking about anything…..*shakes self* Erm, yes, anyway.

And of course the caterpillar (Rickman) smoking hookah was somehow highly amusing. I dunno why, but somehow that made it so much more funny than if it had been a pipe as I see to recall from the book/what little I once saw of the animated movie.

But, I guess what I would say is: If you really love Alice in Wonderland and want a movie that follows the book, this really probably isn’t the movie for you. Because like I said, it’s been awhile, but I’m pretty dang sure it’s not much like the book, except for having the same characters with similar sorts of personalities. But, then, maybe I’ve just forgotten the book.

If you don’t want something just like the book, then go. It’s fun. In a wacky, high on drugs sort of way. ((Although how I would know that, never ahving been high on drugs…..*shrug*))

Oh. I went to see it with my best friend. I cannot BELIEVE that it has a 53% Rotten Tomatoes rating. I would give it about 87 out of 100, at least 90 if there wasn’t so much 3D gimmickry. Speaking of which, did you see it in 3D?

Yup, I saw it in 3D. No way we were going to the 2D, when 3D was an option. Although, really, I’m actually having a smidge of doubt about seeing HP in 3D. I dunno. I guess I’ll just ahve to see HP as both, although not necessarily both at the theatre (as in, not necessarily 2D at the theatre).

Actually, the 3D didn’t seem all that spectacular. Maybe I’m just spoiled, but I didn’t see that it added all that much. The only 3D that I found cool was during the previews, when they were showing previews for “Guardians of *something or other*” which is apparently based off of some book, and this feather floated out of the screen into the audience, and I said (embarassingly loudly) “ooooooh, look at the feather!” As in, probably the whole theatre heard me.

I guess I just kept expecting something like at Universal Studios Terminator in 3D thing, where the stuff on screen feels like it literally comes out of the screen to milimetres in front of your face, not just some added depth to the screen. And t here really wasn’t any of that….

My dad though so too. He said that the gimmickry was fine, but the rest of the movie wasn’t as spectacular. You have to admit that the Cheshire Cat was cool, though.

Also, about HP in 3D, I’m sure David Yates will make it as gimmicky as possible. Come on, he makes hundreds of millions of dollars within 3 years, and he gets the chance to do 3D? I know I can feel safe telling you this, since you hated HBP too. I mean, he makes OOTP, a bad movie. Somehow, he gets signed on for another project, which is also terrible. Then, he gets to do 2 MORE MOVIES??? Why did they even keep him on for HBP after OOTP? *goes to Rants and Plaints and/or Movies thread*

Yes, the Cheshire Cat was cool. So adorable and snuggable, and I wanted to reach into the screen and cuddle him, especially when he was fondling the hat towards the end…

As for HP….Yeah. When OotP came out, it brought a new level of bad to the HP movies, a level I didn’t think could be outdone. And then Yates returned with HBP and we hit an even lower level of bad–which, like I said, I hadn’t thought possible. But, now, I realize Yates is a class of his own in destroying my lovely books, and when after HBP I learned he was staying on for DH (and doing it in two parts)….I realized there was absolutely no chance for the movies to be redeemed. *sigh* Columbus never should have left. PS and CoS were the only two movies that were very good (as far as the books go).

Hey, PoA wasn’t bad. Due to the increased emphasis on the characters, I think it’s actually my favorite HP movie.

I was just astounded how well Johnny Depp played the Mad Hatter. He is a VERY versatile actor, as evidenced by the fact that he can play both Willy Wonka and Jack Sparrow, but the Hatter was like 8 or so different characters in one. He goes from “you’re absolutely Alice” to “DOWN WITH THE BLOODY RED QUEEN!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!” I just love that last quote, and as you can see, it merits as many exclamation points as possible.

meh. Personally, I find all of Depp’s characters (or at least those I can think of that I’ve seen–Sparrow, Willy Wonka, Hatter) to be pretty much the same. And, sure, he does ’em fine, but I don’t find any of his roles all that different from his others. (I did like him as Sparrow, but maybe that’s because that’s the first thing I consciously remember seeing him in)

I’m getting that same sort of feeling from Helena Bonham Carter, too. Don’t get me wrong–I think she makes a great Bellatrix, but….all her characters that I’ve seen are pretty much identical. Bellatrix and that crazy lady on Sweeney Todd–heck, the outfits were even the same, more or less, for those. Her role as the Red Queen mixed it up a tad, what with the makeover, but the personality was still quite a bit the same.

i dunno. I don’t get the fascination with Johnny Depp that people have.

I haven’t seen Alice in Wonderland yet, but i can definitely see how Hatter and Sparrow would seem similar. But Depp actually is a fantastic actor, and can play a lot of different roles. Check out some of his other movies – he’s done Edward Scissorhands, Ed Wood, Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas, Public Enemies, Chocolat, Finding Neverland, Sweeney Todd, all sorts of different stuff. (and yes some of his roles in the list above are similar to others, but i think for the most part they’re pretty varied. that’s just what i can think of off the top of my head, i’m sure he’s done plenty of other movies as well)

PoA, despite its inconsistencies, is the only HP movie i actually appreciate in its own right. The others just seem like kind of pointless visual aids, especially the first two.

I had flashbacks to that numerous times throughout Alice in Wonderland, especially when she first came through the door after she successfully shrunk herself down after falling down the rabbit hole.

I dunno, lots of the landscape looked similar in construction. Like I said, though, I can only think of the one other movie of his that I’ve seen, so it’s not exactly a large sample size fromw hich to draw any conclusions.

And the first thing I see when I walk in the school gates is our vice-headmaster screeching that I’m “violating the school dress code!” (which requires navy blue sweaters in extraordinarily stupid-looking designs). Apparently they get hit (with a ruler as well, incidentally) for not knowing the answer and asking the teacher for help. I mean, isn’t the teacher supposed to be there to help you understand the concept? That’s kind of the point of the teacher. And sorry to hear about your email problem…that’s never happened to me so I’m afraid I can’t really sympathize.

On a different note, we have the exact same AC problem here in Hong Kong. If it’s even the slightest bit humid outside, all the ACs are turned down to about two degrees. (This is the poster in question, it may take a while to load: http:// sfa. nasa. gov/MISSIONPOSTERS/ sts131/STS-131 %20poster% 20lores. pdf )

So I went up to the desk to get my printouts, and the printer tray’s kind of hard to see unless you lean over a bit, so I asked the teacher behind the desk if the printer was working.

He looked over at the same time I did, and got a quick look at the poster before I picked them up.

    “You like Stargate?” He asked.

“Oh, no, this is the poster for the next space shuttle mission.” I showed him the posters again.

Hehe…. My brain is really weird.
For example, my mental image of my brain is a filing cabinet.

And I can think about a lot of things at the same time, on different “brainlevels”-a word I made up to describe it because no one else knows what I mean-, which is like, the first level I’m most conscious of, and all the brainlevels are constantly shifting. That’s how I can go randomly from one topic to another- my uppermost brainlevel shifts.

Does anyone other than me get what I’m saying?!

I get what you’re saying. For me personally, my head is a computer with folders, a calculator, etc. As far as brain levels, I do something similar, where I’m, say, writing this post, singing a song, watching and processing a TV show, and mentally recapping my day. All of those are in different categories for me( something analytical, something mindless, something visual, and memory), so if one section of my brain handles each, I can do them all. It’s almost like all of my senses have to be in use at one.

Ohmigosh. For years I’ve been trying to think of a way to describe how I think of my mind, and you just accomplished that task. So, yes, I do get what you’re saying.

I don’t quite think of my mind as a filing cabinet, though. I picture it as a generic profile image of a person’s head, and inside is a brain-shaped object. In the brain shape, there are lines dividining it up into sections of different colours. Closest to my face, in the front, is consciousness, then sub-consciousness and so on. But i really like how you described it– brainlevels.

Yes, I understand it quite clearly. My mind is much less organized than yours. I guess my brain must be like an atom–each topic is like an electron on an energy level. On the innermost, most conscious level I can only really focus on one or two topics, but on outer levels I think about more and more. Thoughts randomly switch levels unexpectedly. And occasionally, under the right circumstances, I share a thought with another atom–putting our minds together.

My brain is so very not like a filing cabinet. I have extended conversations with myself in my head. There are sort of brainless things i do without really thinking about them though, usually the games i play off to the side while i’m watching things and talking to people (my roommates are amazed at my multitasking skills. i didn’t think it was particularly impressive? But sure). It’s usually solitaire or tetris.

And so that I don’t post on this in multiple places-
Pax: Yeah, except I can think-consciously, at least- on about a hundred brainlevels down, then it starts being more subconscious or that tickling-the-back-of-your-mind feeling. Like, I’ll be writing a song inside my head on BL1, composing a post on MB on BL2, reviewing a book I read recently on BL3, talking to myself on BL4, and so on.
AlpacaLips thinks that I am very strange.

SilverLining: See, I think of my brain as a filing cabinet because I have an extremely photographic memory, and I’ve got “snapshots” of things in my head, that I mentally sort into “files” depending on what “category” they’re in. Or I can pretty much memorize anything I read- that’s a pretty big file in my cabinet.

Ebeth: Yeah! Yeah! Things always have random connections. But I see it as if I get to a certain spot in a file, some sort of wormhole thing connects to another file and switches me to another train of thought. If that makes any sense….? And I have an entire file devoted to conversations with myself and my imaginary friends, quite a large one too.

BL#= my way of categorizing my brainlevels. Sometimes I’m mumbling to myself things like “Poetry on BL3… Music on BL1….” and so on. XD

My brain is more like a few (hundred) multimedia slideshows going at once. For example, I’m typing , reading your post, and listening to The Beatles, and having a conversations with my mom at the same time. The part of my brain thinking about music is almost psychedelic, with different instruments making different colors, and shapes. The typing part of my brain is almost keyboardy, which is conflicting with the reading part of my brain. And the conversation part of my brain is more like a very advanced version of cleverbot.

      “What did she just say?”
      “Have I heard that before?”
      “What should I say?”.

Perhaps it’s just my strangeness. Perhaps each of my slideshows is like your brainlevels. But I don’t really have a top one, it’s all happening at once. That’s almost how I see the world, a series of moments where everything happens.

  114. Midnight Fiddler says:

Brains…how does my brain work……it doesn’t a lot of the time.
I don’t know, I can switch between seemingly unrelated things as well, but it’s because I see links between everything. And one thing reminds me of another, which reminds me of another, which reminds me of another, and then ends up seeming totally random.
Take, for example, a code name I used to use for Orlando Bloom (when I was going through an obsessive celebrity crush phase), “Florida Chocolate”. Now, granted, it’s pretty easy to see the connections there, Florida for Orlando (since Orlando is a city in Florida), and Chocolate for Bloom (because bloom is what you call the white-ish stuff that shows up on chocolate if you leave it out and don’t eat it right away–as though that’s ever a problem!). But take that reasoning a few steps further, and you end up going on a strange journey through all manner of subjects.
Like another code name, this one for Johnny Depp (Pirates of the Carribean obsession here, see the pattern?), “Potato Blank” Potato, because his name is Johnny. I used to know a kid named Johnny (who doesn’t?), and his last name (can I say it on here?) sounded like “Tuber” to me, and that, of course, was potatoes. So for the code name I used potato instead of Johnny.
Make sense? Because that’s the way I make connections, all the time. So when I start going off on some random subject, I probably have some sort of tie-in. Though often it goes by so fast that I disregard all the linking, and remember only where I started, and where I ended up.
    It’s odd.

Does that make any sense at all?

I don’t know about multitasking. If I’m reading, or doing simple-ish things, such as easy math problems, doodling, sewing, tying knots/making friendship bracelets, etc. I find it sometimes easier if I’m making noise. Tapping a foot or fingers, humming, clicking my teeth in rhythms, singing nonsense noises, whatever.
Also, when I’m working on homework that’s hard, I say it out loud. Probably makes me look like a madwoman, but it helps. I pity anyone who ever has to be in the same room as me when I’m studying, with my singing and talking to myself as I do it.
And there’s the incessant chatter that’s always going on. Thinking about this, that or the other thing, what’s going on, what I’m doing….I guess that’s why saying things out loud helps, since I very much think in language, to be slowed down by having to say what I’m thinking focuses me more on the problem at hand. Never looked at it that way before, but now it rather makes sense.

Sheesh, I just realized how ling this post is, and it probably is rather hard to read. I wrote it as I was thinking, so if you want a (diluted) version of what’s going on in Fern’s head, here you have it.

To those who said they meditate- how? What do you do?

I have this great routine that I adopted from a full body-scan session we did in Personal Fitness once. Breathe three times for every ‘side’ of the body – left, right, top, bottom, front, back, then outside, inside – then continue breathing steadily, focussing on every individual part but also all of them as a whole. As I’m doing this, the sections of the body I’m ‘scanning’ are highlighted with a sort of glow, and at the end I get this golden outline of myself in whatever position I happen to be in. It can help your (my) breathing to picture the glow pulsing every time you breathe- I like to think of it as everything leaving my body with each breath out, then some of everything returning with the breath in, then more leaving with the next breath out, et cetera…

I did this once in the half lotus position while I was getting a haircut. One of my best friends was doing it – Bridget (or Bee), if you have any idea who that is – while a very large group of other friends watched (including M and Jamie). The thing most people don’t realise is that I’m not really perfectly tuned out. Generally I strive to think about one thing, not no-thing, because honestly I’d consider thinking about nothing to be impossible (more than any of us can do on an average day, that is). When I was getting my haircut, after I was done with the breathing routine, I just let myself breathe however it happened and instead focussed on what everyone else was saying. It’s funny… Having someone like that in the room doing something as interesting as getting a haircut can make for pretty memorable conversation, and because I couldn’t move or do anything other than observe, all I did was memorise bits of conversation I was interested in slash about which I had a question. At the end, when I finally came back, I spit them all out, to the delight of everyone else, who had assumed that nothing had reached me.

Bee said it was relaxing to be talking to someone who isn’t talking back, and I agree. Though I’ve never done exactly what she did, I have left rambling messages on answering machines late at night… It’s all the comfort of having someone close be there, but all the freedom of having nobody be there. Apparently when everyone else but she and M had retired to the next room, she told us a secret… I didn’t spot it because I didn’t know it was a secret, but I’m glad that helped her.

Oh- and M kissed me at some point; just a peck on the lips. :P Regardless, that may have been the time at which it was toughest to stay concentrated. Or… No, unconcentrated, would be more how I would describe it. Anyway, that was an experience.

    So… Yeah. Long comment. Thoughts?

This was a school project. I decided when I was cleaning out my closet that I wanted to get rid of it, and Mum told me I should crush it so it took up less space. I figured I could just step on it a bit… After all, it’s only cardboard, covered in duct tape.

This is a testimony to the awesomeness of duct tape. After trying several times to put only the weight of one foot on it, I finally got frustrated and jumped onto it, landing with both feet directly on the top.

It buckled a little at the middle (see right side in picture) and there’s a rather indented section on the side that was facing up (the one to the left). But otherwise, it remains unscathed. Not what you’d expect from a box covered in tape.

    Overall… Win, I think.

Edit: After jumping on it again, the only added development was that when I remained standing on it, there was a muffled hissing noise and it slowly deflated. I don’t think we can truly call this crushed, per se. Perhaps reduced in size, yes, but that was most certainly not what I would call a crushing.

Alright, who remembers my old typewriter? I’m finally getting around to re-inking the ribbon, but I can’t figure out how to remove the spools, because they are under the casing. Is there a trick to this, or another way to do it? Also, to re-ink, I have stamp pad ink, is that okay for a typewriter? I’m assuming I just have to rub it on the ribbon, but is there something more? Sorry for all my questions… *hopes for fast moderation because my book club is coming in an hour and I set this up all over my dining room table*

    • Sudo,

Maybe you should send us a photograph of your typewriter, so we’ll know what kind you’re talking about. In most models, the metal case has a sort of hinged lid that flips up (or pries off) so you can get the spools holding the ribbon.

I’ve never heard of anyone re-inking a typewriter ribbon, though. It sounds messy. In the old days, you’d just go out and buy a new one. There were many different types of spools, so you’d have to be careful to get the right one for your model of typewriter. Nowadays that’s probably difficult or impossible to do, depending on the typewriter.

Mhm. I’d tell you what kind it is, but the only form of identification on it is the words “Classic Typewriter”, and that doesn’t yield a very accurate google search. I’ll probably go out and buy a new ribbon eventually, especially since re-inking this one means I’ll probably lose the red half, but I tried re-inking a small section of this one with a q-tip, and it worked fine.
Thanks for the advice, I noticed the case seemed like it could pry off, but didn’t want to try in case I broke it.

    Workings of the brain:

To the people who mentioned having several “levels” of thoughts, I think I remember talking in psychology how (according to one theory) most people can be thinking of around seven things at once, and for each new thought that pops up an old one is displaced (and… slides back into the subconscious or something, I don’t quite recall). Some people have one or two more or less levels though, and stuff.

I think in weird ways sometimes. When I’m trying to remember stuff, I’ll sometimes switch the “layout” of my brain to that of, say, a library, and imagine I’m looking for the book with the right information in it. Or like it’s a computer, and I’m searching the harddrive. I’m not so much visualizing it as… I’m not sure. ‘>.<

Usually one part of my brain is counting. Such as, when I’m walking in the hallways at school I like to have an even number of steps on each foot between certain sets of tiles. Walking between colored tile I like to have an even number for each foot in each color as well. It gets worse when I’m stressed. My friends have trouble walking next to me. I also have to have all our small rugs in the house aligned parallel with the door/wall they’re next to and with each edge about halfway across the floorboards (so the edge of the rug isn’t touching the crack between the boards)

(It’s not OCD though. I CAN have uneven numbers and stuff, I don’t have to go back and do things over till I get it right, I just like the evenness)

    And etc.

Counting: My brain is almost always spelling, although it isn’t right now, surprisingly. I bet it will pretty soon. I get a word stuck in my head, and spell it out over and over, trying to get it to line up with different beats and rhythms. Sometimes the rhythm is a song I have stuck in my head, although there are certain songs that I use more often. (The most common one is called Popcorn, I think. Another is the Tetris theme.) Other times it’s things I hear, like the window wipers in my car. A lot of the time, if I have a word that refuses to fit the rhythm, I get irritable.

Re: Meditation. I never really gave it a thought before I started this class at my school where we start off every day by turning off the lights and meditating to the sound of calming music for a few minutes. Not that many kids participate, (Most of them just try to stifle their giggles  ) but I normally just close my eyes. I’m not exactly thinking, I mean, I do have thoughts, but they’re not really specific thoughts, just…thinking. Does that make any sense? Maybe not. But anyhow, whenever I do this I sort of feel like I’m floating up on a cloud and listening to my breathing. It’s sort of hard to describe, but it’s very calming.

  127. (113, 118, 123) About meditation: there are several different types. In some, you pick some object (such as a sound called a mantra, or a candle flame) and try to focus on it so hard that you lose awareness of everything else. In others, you close your eyes and try to become super-aware of everything you hear and feel. In a popular type called vipassana or “mindfulness” meditation, you calm your mind but don’t try to stop thinking; whenever a thought comes along, you note that it’s there (“oh, a thought”) and then let it disappear without reacting to it. Sometimes people will count breaths until a thought comes along, then go back to zero and start counting again. The idea seems to be that your mind will become calmer if you stop individual thoughts from turning into chains of thoughts. I’ve tried it; it’s an interesting experiment in impulse control. It’s hard at first but gets easier with practice.

We were in part of the geology lab of the NC Museum of Natural Sciences, which for some reason is also North Carolina’s official holding station for poisonous snakes and such and for awhile the temporary residence of a crocodile. He said the line about the duffel bag in a totally offhand way. (Side thought: I’ve heard of alligator purses, but …)

I can’t remember exactly (so much to remember!) but part of its head (eyes and our snout) could be seen, and one of the lab assistants couldn’t stay away from it; he just had to keep looking. There was room enough inside for the croc to move its feet around, which must have made for some interesting sound effects.

*sigh* I started out my cell bio studying today worrying I wouldn’t be able to fit everything I wanted on the cheat sheet we’re allowed: a single-sided sheet of standard sized paper. Handwritten.

Now? I still have info from six or so lectures left to put on it (not including tomorrow and this coming Wednesday’s lectures), plus the info from a handful of old quizzes, but…..At this point my concern is that I’m going to “have to” (or, rather, want) rewrite the cheat sheet because it won’t take up even half a page. The information I ahve on it so far only takes up the header space on a sheet of regular notebook paper. The writing is about 1 mm tall. *sigh* Yup, almost definitely going to be left only having filled maybe half the page, at which point it would make the most since to “enlarge” it, seeing as that would make it easier to find things, and if it doesn’t absolute *have* to be as small as I started out, there’s not reason for it to be. I mean, really, I’ve probably got 20 lines of text in the header. I can write really tiny.

So then I’d be forced to marry Logan Lerman! Yay! Wait, so then who would Pseudo marry? The wall, or perhaps a distant relative of George Harrison? So if PM marries Enc, then SL could marry… This is the problem. Nobody likes me, so it’s hard to say who I’ll marry. Actually, it’s because the only person who doesn’t know me is SL, and she’d rather not marry me, and the only other option is Enc, which we’ve considered, but that takes away the only boy left.
                      Let’s start with this:
                      Pseudonym marries Wall.
PM or SL marries Enc. (This is our main problem. When one of you marries Enceladus, who does the other one marry? There is also the problem of who Keiffer marries.)
And the only person I can think of that I both don’t know and hasn’t objected to marrying me is Beauticious Kate, but judging by how things have been going, she’ll want Enceladus.

    Dear Museblogers,
You should try Moody’s Mega Math Challenge. If you’re good at math, then great! If not, get your mathematically gifted friends together, and handle the background research, references, editing, writing style, etc. (I did this part.) M^3, as it is called, is an event in which a team of up to 5 people solves a large policy problem using MATHS (especially stats.) I do not like maths, but I let C and R do the spreadsheet graphing heavy statistical lifting, and worked on cartography and demographics (yay!) It was 12 hours of awesome. Exhausting awesome, but we all have a 20 page paper of which to be truly proud.

Ok, so my mom’s asking me if I want to go to public school next year. I’m not really sure, so my first thought was “Post on MB and ask for everyone’s opinion!”. So here I am. Anyhow, if I go to school I’d be in eighth grade, the last year of middle school. Would you recommend waiting for another year and just starting in high school, or going to middle school for one year to get the hang of how public schools work?

Since you said you wanted to be in eighth grade, I would do that. But it would be a disruption two years in a row. That’s the way it is with our school system if you go to a K-6 school, then a K-8 school, then high school. But it did prepare me for the transition into high school ( I hope ). So yeah, I would go to the public school.

Well, I’ve never been home schooled, and I go to a private school, so it’s hard to say from my personal experience.

However having moved around a lot and being in the new kid position before, I guess I do have some opinion. Let’s put it this way: if you start in high school, at least you won’t be the only new one, whereas everyone will already know each other if you start in 8th grade. I mean, everyone will be basically in the same position as you in high school, so if you’re worried about being the “new kid” you’ll sort of eliminate that problem if you start in high school. That being said, 8th grade is sort of like a transition step, so if you want a chance to get used to public schools, then there’s the place to do it. I guess it sort of depends on how well you trust yourself to adapt and how big a deal being the new kid is – those are things you’re going to obviously have to think through for yourself, and they’re definitely things to consider.

Anyways, I hope my ramblings didn’t confuse you too much. Honestly it’s your choice, and I can’t say, but overall I think I would start in 8th grade just because that’s the sort of person that I am, but it might not be the same for you. Whatever you decide, keep us posted and good luck!

I would just like to also add that I came to a new school in 5th grade, and it was really good prep for middle school because I got a chance to establish friends and get to know my way around the place. That being said, obviously this is high school we’re dealing with, not middle school, (Two completely different places, I imagine.) and my 5th grade was also the same school as my middle school, so the friends I would be hanging out with would be the same in 6th as in 5th.

Well, mostly people know each other already, actually. But in my district you’ve got 3/4 of the student body of two middles schools feeding into one high school, so there are also a lot of people you don’t know. Then you’ve lost some of your old friends to the other high schools, and you’re in classes with new people. So all in all, there’s a lot more room to make friends. I’d also say wait until high school.

Well, this depends on your area/how you would adjust to school/how much you like homeschooling/how many people starting high school actually do know each other, etc. I also know nothing about the whole middle school-to-high school experience, because I’m not American. But this is my experience: In Australia, primary school is K-6 and high school is 7-12. I was homeschooled since first grade, and… I wouldn’t call it a ‘sheltered life’, but there were a lot of things I missed out on. The closest friends I had were MuseBloggers, but I was really freaked out at the thought of going to school, so the decision to start at eighth grade was very last-minute. I started two weeks into the school year, at a huge private(Catholic) school. My accent sucked. I’d never done any French before, The work sucked. I was in the worst house. But I made friends right from the start, even if there was a lot of unnessecary drama with the populars. I kept half of them. I was the newest addition to my house for the whole year, but when G came to my school I wasn’t the newest addition to my group. I would give a lot to have been there for Year 7, but as I said, it’s different in America. Also, most public schools here are crap, and the majority of private ones are Catholic, so there’s not much choice. So I think you should go for eighth grade, just so you can get used to public school.

I think you should go to public school. Admittedly you can get stuck with rotten teachers and bad curriculums, but it’s a great experience to be part of a community like that, and to be making friends and complaining about schoolwork and such. I highly recommend starting in the eighth grade, because a lot of the people you meet will (presumably) go to your high school, unless you move or something.

Personally i would want to make the transition in high school (oh wait that’s what i did :P). It’s a new experience for everyone, so you won’t be alone in your confusion, and there are a lot more extracurriculars to get involved in and everybody makes new friends and there are unicorns and butterflies (the unicorns and butterflies are a lie). Plus middle school kind of sucks. It did for me, anyway. I mean i thought it was fine at the time, but life has definitely been progressively way better since then.

But then i’ve always gone to public schools, so i don’t know. If you think you would do better at a public school or enjoy it more or something then you might not want to wait. It totally depends on your situation.

139- My neighbor goes to Catholic private school and she’s going to go to public school next year, when she starts high school. If that’s any help.

Actually, I do have some experience with that sort of thing… I moved around a lot in elementary school and I always made friends within a half-year of attending the new school. I would say it doesn’t really matter if you go now or wait until high school. In either case there will be both established cliques and outsiders. I suppose high school adds a level of confusion and stress that breaks up middle school cliques, which would help you in your quest for friends.

Whatever you decide to do, remember that it won’t really matter in the long run. Even if you go to middle school for a year, you’ll still end up in the same high school and with (probably) the same friends.

I’m looking at this from a social standpoint–I regard to education level, I would say go to middle school. Then the high school won’t be confused about your prerequesites and put you in the wrong math or something. Oh, and if your public school system has student IDs, you will have to deal with the hassle of obtaining one when you go to middle school instead of high school, where it probably takes much longer and you miss out on a lot more book-checking-out.

Now, a little insight in to MY life!

Everything’s piling up. Mr. C, the IB director person at my school, says that 2nd semester junior year is the hardest for diploma candidates and he’s right! I’ve got an English essay due after spring break (normally wouldn’t be bad but it’s a POETRY COMMENTARY! UGH!), lab work on the third Internal Chemistry Assesment (this is fun, but hard work), and, the biggie, the silly History Internal Assesment (or was it external…?). Stupid history… I have a tentative bibliography due on Wednesday, which means I have to find as many books and websites about the Boer War as I can and cite them all. Fun.

And, as always, the Extended Essay looms in the future… DUN DUN DUN *gasp* dunun. (inside joke.)

A good thing… THE GERMANS ARE COMING!!! More details on this later so the obligatory rush of “Have fun” and “OMG that’s so awesome” comments can come at a time more close to the actual date. Meh, this is the one time I get those sort of comments, so I might as well manage them. :P

On a side note (out of curiosity), is an appendectomy (haha, I spelled it right first try) a day surgery, or is he going to be stuck in the hospital overnight/a few days? I know that many surgeries that used to be more involved are now only day surgeries because they’d adopted less invasive techniques. anyway, yeah, just curious.

Bleg. I took the National Latin Exam today. That was difficult. But there’s a lot riding on it. See, at our school we make wagers each year with the teacher. If a certain percentage of students medal, we get this prize, and if a higher percentage medals, we get this prize. This year, if I remember, the top wager is several movie days, several Latin Scrabble days, and a few days of harpaestum. Not to mention, everyone that gets a silver or a gold medal won’t have to take the final. So I hope everyone else did well.

also, if our wager was extra movie days, the class would be solid movies. we had movie fridays and random other movie days, and occasionally a bit of latin. we even watched labyrinth because it was called “labyrinth”

I seriously can’t believe how long I’ve been reading Muse. It’s been at least five years (EDIT: I just looked back at the archives and I was right–I began to receive Muse in January 2005). That makes reading Muse the third-longest commitment I’ve ever made, second to dance (Eight years, but I quit in middle school) and cello (Six years). I keep thinking what a different person I was back then. My favorite issues of Muse were the one with the food balls and the one with New Coke. Anyone remember those?

    And, for kicks and giggles:

    User: The Germans are coming!

Cleverbot: I don’t know how to speak german.

User: That’s OK, they speak English.

Cleverbot: Irish people speak English? I did not know that!

((Many, many questions and answers later… You can see the whole thing on the cleverbot thread if you want…))

Cleverbot: It’s good that they named you Alice.

User: Thank you. I like that name, too.

    Cleverbot: Jajaj ok.

    User: Was that German?

Cleverbot: Do you know that you are bot?

((Note that I am not actually named Alice))

Hmmm… I got SECOND CHAIR IN YOUTH SYMPHONY! That’s basically the best there is because there’s this guy that’s really superduper awesome at the cello that always gets first. Next in the lineup there’s me and two other girls that are at about the same skill level so we always compete. In fact, none of us has gotten second chair for two consecutive semesters. And then there’s a guy that’s pretty bad who always is in the back. I feel kind of sorry for him, but I think he’s a sophomore so he’ll get to be first chair when we’re all gone.

Oh, I totally forgot, the entire reason that I brought up old issues of Muse was because we read an article from Muse in TOK class this morning! It was very exciting because I loudly mentioned it was from Muse and someone two seats over exclaimed “Oh, yeah!” Unfortunately, it sounded like she had stopped receiving it long ago, but it’s good to know that someone that I am acquainted with at least knows what Muse is. By the way, the article in question was the one about baby memory from one of the 2006 Muses.

Oh, some of them are. The first serial (the one with the cavemen, which you just watched) was rather dull. And then there was one that sticks out in my mind as being absolutely mind-numblingly dull. “The Web Planet”, the 13th serial, the 5th one of Season 2.

But, of course, there are some wonderful serials, as well. That reminds me. I’ve been in the middle of a serial for well over a week now….The 21st serial, it’s very long, 12 episodes, 9 of which are reconstructions…..I’ve watched 3 episodes of it, meaning I’ve watched a grand total of 93 episodes of Classic Who (22 have been recons, meaning 87 more recons to go), which means I still have…..*looks at guide, does subtraction* 604 episodes left to go. Yeah….This is going to take a long, long, long, long, long, long, long time. I’ve only watched 93 episodes since mid-December.

i’m still slightly terrified that they’ll realize i’ll just be a lowly soph and take it back. but it is good. i love my roommates and everything but living with people isn’t my favorite part of college (living -next- to people is terrific though. so best of both worlds for me next year :P)

also, my friends from high school (who are all on spring break unlike poor little me) are picking me up tomorrow to go do s’mores. i’m way excited for that.

and i’m about to go play outside because it is nice out :D with people, so hopefully that will mean i won’t get raped (there have been like two rapes and a shooting here recently, it’s kind of frightening. they all happened at like 3AM or so though, and i know the shooting at least was way out in one of the parking garages in the urban-y-er part of campus and didn’t involve students) but yes. that should be fun. the playing outside, i mean.

and i only have two more exams! plus an oral exam in italian tomorrow. and then the legit italian exam, and then math. but band is over, we just had our last concert, and there were cookies afterward as well.

I got back from Spain on Monday. Jet lag is brutal.
    Spain is amazing.
OH MY GOD I wish I could stay there… It was just beyond amazing. We did amazingly at both concerts; people in the audience were actually crying. I met AWESOME people from both conservatories.
The first guy, Jorge, was hysterical. We told Jorge that it was a tradition in America to tug on a birthday person’s ear, so he went up to a boy whose birthday it was (not really, everyday is his birthday, but that’s another story) and tried to tug his ear, for which he received a strange look and a slow back away. But Jorge was messing with us too.
Jorge: “So, do you want hot Spanish girl? I can get you a girlfriend for the night.”
Tom (birthday boy): “Uhm, no, no thanks…”
Jorge: “Are you sure? Clara! Venga! See? She is hot!”
Clara: *gives Jorge and Tom weird looks* *walks away*
We didn’t really meet many more people form the first conservatory except Jorge. At the second conservatory though, there were a lot of cool girls we were talking to, and there was a really good looking flute player, which was strange to us because our male flute player is sorta creepy.
Of course all of the girls were flirting with him. Okay, fine. I was too. A little bit. But the other girls were over the top.
“Geraldo, can I have your email?” “Sure, do you have paper?” “Oh, no, but I have a pen. You can write it on my arm! *flirty giggle*”
The people in Spain were really nice and polite. When we were in a shop, they asked us why we were here from America, and when we told them why, they thanked us for the music, and they said they really appreciated it. The other thing I really liked about Spain was the culture. Everything is so mixed there! It’s sooooo beautiful there…..
I’d keep on writing about Spain, but I just can’t possibly write it all down. It’d be like, ten pages. Bye for now!

So today was the end of Spirit Week, and Juniors came in second!

We won tug-of-war last night (While I was at SAT Prep), and we were judged as having the best-decorated showcase window. In the lip-synch competition, our team won for their great performance of Bohemian Rhapsody. The girl who “sung” the “Mama” part was at the back of the theater, and nobody in the audience had any idea she was there until the spotlight turned to her and she started her part.

    So we won that, too.

Then, we had Quiz Bowl, and everybody cheered when I got up to go onstage, which was really weird, but not unwelcome. We knew most of the answers, but the Seniors kept buzzing in first, so we didn’t win.

But after that, I walked to the library and saw that all of my space shuttle posters from last week were still on the telephone poles where I’d taped them! I stopped to fix one where I hadn’t taped down a corner, and an old guy walked by, so I said, kind of loudly:

“Do you think it looks alright?”

He backed up, came to look at the poster, and said “It looks very good, what’s it for?”

“This is the official NASA picture for the next space shuttle mission.” I explained.

“The next shuttle? Oh. That guy in the middle looks kind of old, I’m surprised to see him there.”

“That’s Alan Poindexter, the commander. The shuttle’s actually pretty light on the passengers. It’s only 3-gs. If you’ve been on a really good roller coaster, you’ve felt worse.”

“I didn’t know that. But yeah, it looks very good.”

So the old guy left and I thanked him, and then kept on walking to the library.

Well, my school’s swimming carvinal was yesterday. My house won. We also got the spirit cup. I suppose I should be celebrating, but it’s too much to process. Three of the populars were asking me to do some relay thing with them even though I’m a bad swimmer, because there was no-one else to ask. *shakes head* Still, one of the teachers gave us lollies for our pains. And there was the fun we had waiting for the bus to the pool (some girl tried to put a purple scarf on my French teacher’s head).

We couldn’t stand in the other houses’ areas, so I went outside and let ilh do my hair. I didn’t get to talk to L much because her friends annoy me. I only saw G and some other people when we were in the same events. J was away. I had fun with D, ilh, and some other random people (V was there, but of course nothing to do with her was fun). Then V, some girls from my homeroom, and D disappeared (the pool is within walking distance of the mal), so I spent the rest of the day sucking at swimming and wanting to get back to school. Our “war cries” were fun though. So it was all right.

The Germans have come! Now you get to know what I’ve been talking about for the past week!

I was really nervous because I was afraid that mine wouldn’t like me and we wouldn’t have anything to talk about, but we actally have had some delightful conversations! They were mostly about topics that we’ve learned about in history. It’s interesting because she’s very exasperated about learing about WWI for the fourth time and I’m realy excited about learning about the Russian Revolution.

My exchange student is going to stay for two weeks and then the entire group is going to go down to San Francisco and then back to Germany. It’s a really short period of time, but I get to stay at her house when I go to Germany in the summer, so I’ll get to know her a little bit better.

Yes, it’s already the 14th here. In fact, it’s already been the 14th for almost 11 hours. So sorry to spoil it for you, but this is one of the few perks I get from living out here (in Hong Kong).

Aw, oh well. I’m slightly disapointed (again) because none of my friends understand why pie day is doubly amazing, and my dad doesn’t understand why his craving for pie, tonight, made me sad. I was saving that pie in the freezer all year, and he gets a craving tonight, really???

Aw, that’s too bad. Maybe you should make another pie, that could be your project for today! And in honour of Pi Day, instead of giving you choklit, I shall give you choklit pie. *gives choklit pie*

Depends what the necklace looks like and if it comes with matching earrings… Although I assume you don’t mean that kind of gold or silver

Hmph. I’m in a bit of a dilemma. There’s a sweet sixteen party for a girl that I’m not very close to, but I’m still friends with. It’s really not my kind of party: TONs of people, formal dress, she’s rented a historical house in our town. My moma thinks I should go, but she just….doesn’t understand me. A few of my friends are invited, but they are much more party people than I am. My best friend, who is the ONLY one I trust not to leave me if I have a social breakdown (I have some major problems) is not invited. Then, there’s the fact that I would have to cut off a visit to my big sister early to get back in time. So, it sort of seems like, with all that ^ I shouldn’t be going, but part of me wants to go, just because, and I always have the option of walking home…

    I hate teenagerly dilemmas.

Go! Formal parties seem intimidating, but you can wear such nice dresses *drools* *is obsessed*

As for social things- I go to a ballroom dance class, and met a girl from my school who goes there on a different day (I only go with at least 3 friends). I was surprised to find out that she went there completely alone, having just moved here from Greece and all. But going alone, she now knows everyone who goes to her class by name and is friends with at least half. I wouldn’t recognize most of the people in my class, since I’m constantly surrounded by my own friends. Somehow, I like her attitude better. The best people to know (in my opinion) are those who also stand alone sometimes. Perhaps your BF could gatecrash, or… I don’t know about social breakdowns, but I don’t think the world will end if you spend half the evening sitting behind a giant fern or go home early.

Dang. I was just saying something about an hour ago (12ish, in my time zone) to a friend of mine about pi day….You know, that the “real” pi day was 3/14/15, but that March 14 in general was pi day, not even freakin’ realizing as I was saying it that March 14 was then and now, not several weeks into the future…..

At this time, I’d just finished watching to Dr. Who episodes with said friend–I may have convinced him to start watching DW–“Empty Child” and “Doctor Dances”. It was a trade-off: He wanted me to watch anime/manga, I was like, “Okay, well, you should watch Doctor Who.” Him: “Okay, if we watch a *insert name of guy who did the movie* film first.” Me: “Okay.”

So…..We watched Howl’s Moving Castle (and when the credits rolled, I realized there was a reason other than anime people on the blog that I recognized the name. Dianna Wynne jones.) It was good, bit weird thinking that an anime dude was hot, but it was good. And then we watched the two DW episodes, the 3rd time I’d seen them, and I was giggling almost constantly. Alan’s brain works too fast for me, he’d riddled out pretty much what was going on by midway through the 2nd episode, if not sooner. I don’t recall having a clue…But then, i wasn’t trying, really.

Anyway, I really ought to turn forward all my clocks and head to bed. It’s 2:20 now, what with DST.
