Robert’s Time Capsule: Comic Books

Robert writes:

While sorting through my storage room, I’ve come across a box containing my old comic books — including my beloved X-Men. KaiYves and Keiffer in particular might get a kick out of a few of the early panels.

Here’s one from the “origin” issue chronicling the formation of the X-Men. Things were a little different back then…

A few issues later, the group graduated from high school:

After the ceremony, naturally enough, they all put on hats (and ties, in the case of the men) and headed into Manhattan to take in a poetry reading in Greenwich Village. Who wouldn’t?

I think I may have that one. I have most of The Original X-Men, some of The Uncanny X-Men, and most of the new “Classic” X-Men.

I’m more fond of my The Original X-Men, but the others are sharing the spot of high honor, the top drawer of my dresser. I have yet to search through some of the boxes that are taking up most of our basement.

I love “Perhaps we should send a photo to Magneto, with a suitable inscription, such as: ‘Always thinking of you!'”

Robert: What’s your favorite comic, besides X-Men because they, of course, take the top spot.
I’m pretty obsessed with all my old Dare Devil comics, but nothing beats the Original X-Men on my list.

That quote I posted on the Quotations thread was from an X-Men comic. It was “Preposterous! Pure scientific balderdash! I don’t believe a word of it!”
(Choklit if you know which comic that quote’s from! Extra if you can name the page.)

I still need to read X-men… These don’t really make much sense without reading them.
The style rather reminds me of the old Archie comics we have, though.

    • There was action, too. I just picked a few “slice of life” moments to post here.

I know. It was still funny how someone thought, “Hey, how about they act like normal high schoolers every once in a while?”
Actually, that’s what I have started thinking about the Alex Rider series. I mean, come on, can’t we have just one book where he just goes to school, hangs out with Jack, maybe does a little kissing with Sabina, and stuff like that? This non-stop spy action really gets annoying.

Are these drawn by Jack Kerby???

  5. EAP,

Jack Kirby, yes. (By the way, do you get the impression that JK really enjoyed drawing Jean Grey?)

I’ve read those old comics, too! A few years ago I was in the middle of my X-Men obsession and would take out the collections of old comics from the library and read the X-Men encyclopedia obsessively.

Man, I wish I had comic books : / I really love reading them, which I only found out a few years ago, but unfortunately we don’t have any, and neither do my friends. Same with the library : / Maybe I’ll hope for an extra geeky college friend whose stuff I can steal XD

Speaking of x-men! my class is doing an alphabet countdown to the end of the year (we had B today, all wore black), and X is x-men day. SO I need to come up with a good costume :D

I’m trying to find the comics online to get a better idea, heh

Mwahahahaha! My dad was looking through all his boxes and boxes, and boxes, and boxes, and boxes of old comics and he gave me all the X-Men comics he found!!!!! Hoorah! So now I have a hundred and twelve. *hops up and down while hyperventilating*

Actually, the pile doesn’t seem so big, but that’s only the one’s I have on me right now… there’s more at the studio…

  11. I have a couple of hundred old Marvel comics from the 1960s. Not all of them are in good condition — I didn’t take very good care of them and read some of them literally to pieces.

@ first picture: Obviously this era and ours had different ideas about what a “revealing” costume was.

8- go to the Marvel encyclopedia. It has pretty good descriptions. They’re on the Marvel website, there’s one on the X-Men in general.

10- Oooh, which issues? If it’s early Claremont, you MUST share scans with me, especially any scenes featuring Peter Corbeau.

8- Are you going as any character in particular or just as yourself as a Xavier’s student?
