Random Thread: Gloriana’s Realm, Part 2

As all veteran time travelers know, the scheduling can go a bit wonky. But we arrive at last at a new Random Thread in time to make merrie musicke with gude companye.

Tomarrow being Earth Day (Hey GAPAs, Earth Day isn’t on the calendar!) my school is doing a community service project cleaning the beach after exploring a large section of an extremely large park across the street from where I live. Exciting, except weather is miserable and I don’t feel good.
Speaking of which, shall I relate to you my tale of ironic woe?
So my hip hurt, and the doctor said “let’s get an x-ray” So I got an x-ray, and the doctor said “your hip looks fine, but the x-ray revealed something a bit worrying about your spine. Go get an MRI” So I got an MRI and the doctor said “yeah, you have a spine abifita occulta[which I know I spelled wrong] but 20% of the population has that, you’ve had it since birth and there isn’t anything to worry about with it. However, the MRI revealed systs in the inferior pole of your kidney, so we’re going to check on those”
I swear, if they find anything non-kidney related while looking at my kidney, I will die laughing.

Glee is awesome. *is currently listening to Glee music actually* It’s a bit cheesy sometimes (OK, most of the time), but it helps if you think of it as satire. (Which it mostly is. Sometimes they do take themselves seriously, which isn’t as good.)

Ok, I have a question for Glee fans: (keeping in mind I know practically nothing about the show, besides the fact that it’s good and I want to watch it, but I’ll probably have to watch it online somehow) does it really have to be watched in order to make sense?

      Pie 0
      Squid 0
      • speller73 says:

Probably… I mean, you could probably at least somewhat survive not watching them in order, but there is some form of plot…

        Squid 0
        • /gradster(1)/ says:

Yeah… No, it has to be watched in order. The plotline is pretty much indispensable. I mean, if you’re never going to watch any of it ever again, sure, watch a random episode. But I would definitely watch it straight from the first if you plan on following it in any capacity.

About the phrase mentioned on the last thread… I’m trying to determine whether or not I invented it myself. I’m fairly sure I did, because I haven’t known any primary sources that have been known to say it so far… Also, like the time Einstein stole one of my favourite quotes. My version: ‘Creativity is the art of hiding plagiarism.’ Einstein’s: ‘The secret to creativity is knowing how to hide your sources.’

BLARGH. And it’s so completely ironic. I was being entirely creative when I thought that up, and now people are just going to think that I’m plagiarising.

      Pie 0
      Squid 0
      • speller73 says:

Well, one plot summary might be a little difficult as it ran for 7 seasons. The premise of the show is pretty much that a blond, slightly ditzy, formerly popular girl named Buffy discovers that she is a Slayer. That is, she is the one girl in the world who has been mystically chosen to kill demons and vampires. So pretty much she fights various demons and vampires with her British librarian Watcher Giles, her computer geek friend (and later gay witch) Willow, her dorky and humorous friend Xander, and various other people who she runs into after season 1. It can get a bit dark and also a bit, um, mature at times. It’s Joss Whedon, so expect hilarity, brilliance, and absolutely heart-wrenching deaths.

  17. Selenium the Quafflebird says:

So, I have a question for MB. (It’s partly for my homework. OK, mostly.)

If someone asked you to list the planets (apart from Earth) from most habitable to least habitable, what would you write?

I’m still a bit confused about the different factors involved and how one would determine how important they are in choosing a habitable planet.

    Pie 0
    Squid 0
    • Cello-Playing Mathematician (AKA Kyra) says:

I would say that Mars would be the most hospitable. It doesn’t have the noxious atmosphere and extreme temperatures to the extent that the other planets do.

Venus would probably be the second on my list because without the extremely poisonous atmosphere it would be pretty dandy.

Then Mercury because it gets really hot/cold up there.

Pluto next– WAIT. Pluto isn’t a planet anymore. Poor pluto.

Hm. The gaseous planets are hard to rank because none of them are even remotely hospitable. I’ll try, though.

Uranus is pretty much tied with Nepune. It’s farther up because it has a pretty ring and it rotates horizontally, which is cool.

Neptune because it isn’t as big as Saturn

Saturn because it has awesome rings and isn’t as big as Jupiter

Jupiter because it’s so huge you would be crushed if you tried to descend through the gas.

That’s my two cents. MB astronomers may have a more enlightened perspective.

But Venus’s atmosphere is so heavy it would crush anyone living on it.

        • POSOC says:

Actually, a really cool plan proposed by Geoffrey Landis involves large floating habitats in Venus’s upper atmosphere. Since Venus’s atmosphere is so dense, Earthlike atmosphere there is actually a lifting gas with similar power to helium- so these settlements would be like enormous, semi-stationary airships. And in the upper atmosphere, the temperature tops out at somewhere around 100 Fahrenheit, and the pressure isn’t much higher than Earth at sea level. Humans can’t breathe it, of course, and there’s still acid rain to worry about, but it’s a vast improvement over the lead-boiling, steel-crushing atmosphere at ground level.

Hm. Are you allowed to consider a planet’s moons in addition to the planet itself? That would make the gaseous planets much more inhabitable.

Titan might have water under the surface (it’s a possibilty only. As far as I know, it hasn’t been proven.). On the surface, apart from a bunch of lakebeds and canal-like things, there appears to be lakes of methane (not water). (At least, that’s what I remember from Cassini-Huygens. So I went to the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston today. We saw the ancient Greek and Roman art, still lifes by someone named…Diego Melendez? Something like that. But the exhibit on musical instruments was AMAZING.

There were all these old instruments from all over the world, most of them from the late seventeenth century to the early twentieth century. Some of them had this amazing mother-of-pearl inlay, some had carvings on the thingie, on top of the violin where usually there’s a scroll…( I’m blanking on the name ). Also, some were painted really intricately ( like the pianos ). I learned that Buddhists in Tibet use human bones to make instruments, which was kind of creepy, but is apparently connected to their belief in second lives, or something. Also, there was this tiny trombone. It was, like, smaller than a trumpet. And a backward-facing one, where the bell was over your shoulder, which apparently was so that people behind you in the marching band could hear you better. AND, best of all, one that had a dragon head for a bell. Whose tongue wagged when you played. It was crazy, I mean, can you imagine playing one of those?? It would be heavy…

fireh and Ducky, I think you would have liked it. Ducky could have seen Alanna’s ancient ancestors :D

Seriously, though, it was a really cool exhibit.

And, fortunately, in my favor, because one of the questions that I’d graded as wrong last night based on his key turns out to, in fact be correct–just like I thought. So my grade on the organic test last night has gone from a 56% to a 60%, so I am very happy, because a 60 just looks so much nicer than a 56. Plus, a 60’s a B, whereas a 56 was only a high C.

And, yes, to those of you not familiar with the horrors of organic chemistry, you are probably questioning how on earth I could consider a 60% a good grade. For starters, the prof aims for 60% to be the average on his tests. For seconds, organic chemistry is nigh on impossible, and only insanely evil people like my lab partner understand it (he refused my idea of a brain transplant….I wanted to use his brain so I could get a good grade. I have no idea why he declined….*sigh* I really do wish I had Alan’s brain). But a 60% is wonderful, considering I expected far worse. And with my 70 from the first test and 72 from the second, I now only need a 38 on the final to get a B, so I’m very happy. I was utterly terrified I was going to fail miserably (after my B that I barely managed last semester) and get a C.

But, so, yes. *is so very happy*

        • In Dickens’s time, drawing out the stories — which were published serially — was considerate: playing to his audience, drawing people into the lives of the characters, milking the suspense just as multi-part television episodes do today. Compared with some writers of his time, he was actually restrained.

      • Same here. I always feel that my intelligence drops about twenty points when I’m on the phone. It used to be sheer torture to make calls. The signal is very thin compared to live speech, and there are no supplemental tracks of information (e.g., body language) to help decipher what is said. Silence is many times more noticeable and uncomfortable than in person. There’s no way to take time and reflect. Then, of course, my tension and dread intensified all those factors.

In recent years, I’ve learned to relax considerably. Phone calls are still uncomfortable, but in a much more minor way, no longer a big deal. Still, the telephone remains my communication device of last resort. Even if all the above problems were solved, other problems remain. Some people are difficult to disengage. I don’t want to interrupt people, and I don’t like to be interrupted myself.

    Yesterday. Was. Epic.

I had SAT Prep in the morning, and we had to take a practice test, but it was in a room with lots of light and air, so even that wasn’t so bad.

Then, we picked my brothers up from their track meet and drove for about two hours to get to the museum. My brothers were complaining a lot because they didn’t get to shower, which I totally understood, but my dad said we were late already and we wouldn’t turn around for anything.

I hadn’t been to the museum since 7th or 8th grade, so I’d forgotten how cool it was inside. There was a Blue Angels jet hanging right over the entrance in the lobby, and a model of an astronaut using an MMU jetpack. My dad showed our tickets and we went into the IMAX theater. I noticed a girl sitting in the next row down reading “A Man on the Moon”, so I worked up my courage and asked “Is that Andrew Chaikin’s book?”

She looked up at me and said it was, and we started talking. Her name was Erin, and she had no idea there was anybody remotely close to her age interested in space travel. We talked a lot, and then the movie started.

We were sitting way on the left of the theater, so the dome made the images look kind of curved in a weird way, especially when something went from the top of the screen to the bottom. In some of the scenes with lots of camera motion, I got a little dizzy. But still. It was Apollo 13. In IMAX.

The Saturn launch was incredible. Everything shook. They cut out some of the jokes for time, but I still loved it. And sitting in a theater full of former Grumman employees who worked on the lunar lander during the scene where Lovell “thanks” it… there was this utter EXPLOSION of applause.

After the movie, we went out into the museum, and Erin and I ran around the space section geeking out and laughing and eating the bruschetta the waiters were going around offering. It was wonderful.

Then there was the dinner, and I shook hands with Fred Haise! (And actually manged to have a coherent conversation with him, too!)

Just came back from NYSSMA, which I bombed in so many ways. Of course, J had to come out of the room before I went in smiling and saying that he did excellent. Darn you, clarinetist…
This weekend I hope to go bike riding with my friends and B’s crush/obsession. My brother is friends with him, so he’s going to come too, along with his other friends. (Hopefully.)

 I was in Ashland back in 2002 with choir for the Shakespeare festival. I remember we watched a play in this lovely little outdoor theatre and at SOU we got little mini drama lessons–that’s where I learned that it takes 20 minutes to strangle someone….

Yes, it was probably that. *googles* Yes, it would have been the Elizabethan theatre. It’s been 8 years, so….not really sure which play we saw. All I remember was despite it being summertime, when the sun started to go down during the performance, it got rather cold. But the seats were really hard, so most of us were opting to sit on our jackets to provide a bit of cushioning whilst shivering violently. And being teased by some locals because since we were from Alaska, how could we possibly be cold?

But, no, I’m afraid I really don’t remember which play it was. I do remember it was good, despite the chill and the like, but…*shakes head* I’m drawing a total blank.

  62. Luna the Lovely says:

So…I had a dream last night. And you know how supposedly nobody actually dreams that they die? Well, I did.

The earliest I remember of the dream my sister and I were involved in an epic chase by a Dalek. We were on four wheelers on a mountain trail speeding away as fast as we possibly could. The trail got submerged by water at some point, so we had to ditch the four wheelers and took refuge in a house. The Dalek found us so we jumped out the back window off a cliff into a huge snow bank (yes, we went from summer to winter merely by walking through this house), and were in some area that has huge steps a bit like Mayan pyramids, and we ended up in this huge auditorium, in what I’m sure was supposed to be a different time–everybody was required to take only massive numbers of music classes in college, and they were all practicing singing.

At this point, I don’t think it was my sis who was with me anymore, but I think maybe for a brief time she had become speller73, but I’m hazy on that. We had a brief conversation whilst watching terrified for the Dalek about music, where whomever my sis had transformed into was talking about various music classes she was taking.

Oh–we were taking refuge in the auditorium, because we felt that hiding amongst people was the best way to hide…And, yes, we felt a smidge guilty that we were going to likely get a bunch of them killed.

Anyway, at that point my companion had now definitely become Stephanie, a girl I know here at school. We fled out the front (or maybe it was the back) when the Dalek was investigating outside at the other end of the building (it was scanning for life forms). WE tried to catch a ride on a bus, but they told us it was full, but there was a bar on the side at the back, so we grabbed on with the full intent of hanging on to the outside of the bus for dear life to escape the Dalek.

The bus driver got off and said that we were blocking his view, that we had to be on the very back of the bus if we were going to hang on, so I moved so that I was basically clinging to the back side of the bus like Jack to the TARDIS (i do love my analogies), and Steph was hanging more toward the side still. Unfortunately, the Dalek had made its way around the building and caught sight of us, and the bus was only just warming up and getting ready to start moving.

I recognized that there was no point in running and was hoping like hell the bus would hurry up and move, and it turned, starting to, giving the Dalek and even better view, which lifted up its shooting arm and shot out a cloud of steam like stuff (been watching too much Classic Who. THe War Machines last night fired steam clouds that killed), killing me instantly and I awoke with a jolt. ’twas 7:28 by my microwave.

I can’t even remember if the Dalek said “exterminate” before offing me, but I do remember that it was one of the new Daleks. The yellow one, if anyone cares.

Oh, I should add. In the 12 minutes I had remaining before my alarm was set to go off (set to my exterminate ringtone, oddly enough), I feel back asleep and found myself back in that auditorium. Steph was there a few rows back, she’d apparently gotten exterminated to, and as dreams do, we’d both come back in game-like fashion (as in, we killed one life, but still had more to go). And then our organic chem TA came around handing back our last lab with our grades on it, and i was horrifed to see I’d gotten a 26/30, as I’d been hoping for a 30/30. I do hope that wasn’t prophetic….

Re: Dreams and alarm clocks: The other night I had a dream that I set my alarm clock so that it would wake me up with the “to be or not to be” speech. The alarm clock then went off in real life, but I continued dreaming and was inordinately frustrated that it was producing a shrill beep rather than Hamlet’s voice. I tried to fix it by fiddling with dials that do not in reality exist on my alarm clock, and I must have succeeded in hitting the snooze button, because I distinctly recall coming half-awake later, frantically trying to recall the speech, but I couldn’t seem to get past “nobler in the mind” until I remembered “to suffer” and fell asleep without going any farther. Incidentally, when I came fully awake about half an hour later, I could get all the way to “Must give us pause.”
And then last night I dreamed that I went to see a performance of Hamlet, but they were short several actors and didn’t have understudies, so I and a couple of nondescript dream-friends stepped into to fill the roles and I had to learn all of Ophelia’s lines and blocking, as well as be fitted for a costume, in five hours.

  78. Ebeth says:

I honestly don’t quite understand cake. I’ve used it on here as a substitute for swearing, but with swear words it’s the intent of the word, not the word itself. Stronger words have become more taboo since being adopted as swear words, but a great example is hell – it’s a perfectly normal, innocent word most of the time, but it’s suddenly a bad word when you use it as one. So by substituting cake for other swear words, you haven’t eliminated swearing, you’ve just put it in a different context.

    Pie 0
    Squid 0
  79. Of course, context includes social context, i.e., what other people expect to hear or recognize as strong language and how likely they are to be shocked or offended. Off the blog, I’d say “cake” is almost 100 percent unexpected and unrecognized and zero percent offensive.

    people are so illogical *sigh*

still though, the -meaning- has been clear all along. so far it hasn’t been directed at a person (and hopefully on the blog it never will be) but if someone calls me a caking cake i’m going to be just as offended as if they cussed me out. i don’t know, i think i’ll just stick with straight-up swearing and not do it on the blog :-/

    Pie 0

  81. I think the literal meaning of words is important, too. Maybe I’m more susceptible to mental images than most people, but I’d rather hear expletives that evoke pastry rather than, say, manure. That’s certainly true on the blog.

    Pie 0
    Squid 0
  82. Ebeth says:

Also, isn’t swearing supposed to be a form of expression? If people off-blog don’t understand it, it isn’t really serving its purpose. I think we can only really talk about cake as it relates to people on the blog, because otherwise it’s just a meaningless jumble of words

    Pie 0
    Squid 0
    • I’d say the intent is pretty clear from context, perhaps even more so offblog. We react to all sorts of cues besides language. You could swear at someone using random gibberish in a particular tone of voice and the message would come through loud and clear.

I think that swear words are a substitute for vocabulary. In some cases.
I mean, using them to express frustration is fine. Or at least, not bad. Sometimes, it’s just a way to let out your feelings. I’m okay with that, though I’d still prefer it if you stuck to lesser swear words, or perfectly ordinary words.
But I’ve noticed people saying, for example, ‘I can’t see crap’. What they mean is, ‘I can’t see anything.’ But for some reason, they don’t want to spell out exactly what they can’t see. I don’t like that. It’s the same thing with ‘she was like yeah, and I was like I can’t believe that, and she was like aagh’ Can’t you just say ‘she said ‘yes’, and I replied ‘I can’t believe that’ she expressed displeasure.’

I just substitute the word I deem appropriate in the context for any caking that I see. In my opinion… Swear words only have power if you give it to them. I swear all the time, but the only reason I do is because it impacts other people and really gets my meaning across to them. If other people felt the way I do, I don’t think I’d swear at all, aside from the remnant habits I might have.

(As a side note, spellcheck says that caking is a word. I am so pleased with the world right now.)

Oh, I don’t believe I mentioned it earlier, but I got my Diabolis CD from Paul the other day and it’s absolutely wonderful. Ever more reasons to be a proud Baker House-ian. ^.^

The other day I was in the house rereading The School for Scandal and thinking about 18th century drama and arts in general and came to the conclusion that I do very much want to play the harpsichord, and play it well. I just am not so thrilled about the learning process. Alas. The guitar as well, and by that I mean the 18th century style guitar, which is more like a cittern type instrument. But again, I’d like to be able to play it, just not so keen on the whole taking time to learn it bit. Or where I’d be able to find one, that’s a problem too.
And guitar (modern). I’ve always just assumed I’ll always have guitar players around, and for the most part that’s true, but still. Meh. I dunno if I’d get desperate enough to seriously pursue it, but it’s a thought.

But I suppose for now I’ll concentrate on the harpsichord. I do so love it, and it’s a shame to have one and be in ignorance as to how to play it. *sigh*
I’ll get out my music book and practice. Tomorrow.

Oh, and I really should make a recording or something of the airs of The Beggar’s Opera, it’s ridiculous that no one knows them and we end up talking through all the songs when we read through it. Then again, we also need to find a core of people who consistently does it, instead of having to press gang nearby loafers into our merry company.
*sigh again* It’d be great if that all happened and then some people were interested enough (and willing enough to make fools of themselves) to actually act it all out, as opposed to reading it fast as they can in a monotone.
I’m tired of looking like a showoff when I emote and sing the songs I know. It’s enough that I always end up as Polly. I might be an attention hog, but I dislike appearing so.

I have two music related questions, one of which I am almost certain someone can answer, and one of which I can probably get some help with, at the very least:
    1) I finally got around to downloading the AVPM soundtrack, and was wondering what the song order is? It downloaded in alphabetical order, and I’m too busy lazy to find out the correct one from online. (Yes, I should probably have it memorized, but I want to be certain.
    2) We’re having a school dance tomorrow, and apparently my reputation for listening to “abnormal” music that even the DJ, the mother of a third grader, knows about it. Anyway, she asked me for some good dance songs that aren’t in the top forty. I can help with the “Not in the top forty” part, but I’m not so sure about the “good dance songs” part. Does anyone have any suggestions?

          • The logicians mentioned in the book were a fairly special breed — pioneers of logic, you could say, a somewhat different category from people who study an established discipline. It’s also possible that in the context of the times, the individuals portrayed in the the book seemed attracted to logic for certain reasons that left them dismayed by the twists and turns it took. Someone entering the field today would have a different set of expectations, precisely because of the contributions from those earlier mathematicians.

Extremes of isolation, lack of acceptance, and other factors might push vulnerable minds over the edge, too. Most creative fields have something of a reputation for madness that usually turns out to be at least somewhat exaggerated.

I do cuss – on occasion – but not that often. Mostly when I’m alone and frustrated about something will I scream a few not-so-nice words.

93 and others – I have to admit, the purpose of swearing has always seemed a bit stupid to me. I mean, like ebeth said somewhere, I have never understood the use of hell as being bad. It’s just a normal word – a place of all things – and besides the definition of the place being far from positive, the word itself has no negative meaning whatsoever unless you give any to it. For the sake of society I try to avoid swearing simply because society doesn’t like it and I don’t want to get into trouble, but society is A) Stupid and B) a lot of curse words have other meanings. How did they even get started? It’s a load of cake to me.

Oops, we weren’t finished! Well, even more sadly, Swat’s group didn’t make it to the next level…. But I bring good news! I, Fishy, got second place, which means I am off to Nationals! Princess Magnolia, I’m thinking mini kokon.

So, my six month mark was April 15 according to many a helpful source, and Pseudonym said that I was supposed to ask the GAPAs to upgrade my chess account to a Paleo account or whatever it is that has to be done. So, that being said, I’m going to go eat some food.

I have to play music tomorrow. All day. I’m being paid to do it. This is good, except that I’ve only really been practicing the stuff I’m playing in my lessons. And that’s not what I’m playing tomorrow. I’m freaking out a little bit. I also need to make 6 Turk’s heads for a friend.
I’m tired. I wonder if these cough drops have enough sugar in them to keep me awake?
I need to wake up early tomorrow. I’ve been sleeping in as of late because I’ve had a lot of sleepless nights, what with coughing so hard I’m almost throwing up and all.
Okay, I’m going to stop procrastinating and get off the computer, g’night.

(Oh, and I really am sorry Robert et all, about the OSU thread. I know you try really hard to keep it G [or at least PG] rated around here, I wasn’t trying to push it over bounds.)

Oh, hey, on a random note, my spanish teacher had us listen to a song in class today. From what little I understood of it (I was very sleep deprived, and not really interested in anything going on….), it was all about raining coffee in the countryside.

I thought of Ianto. And his love of coffee. And Countrycide. And Ianto and raining coffee in the countrycide. And….Yeah. Coffee makes me think of Ianto. And the word “countryside” makes me think of Countrycide, which makes me think of Ianto. And of how “You’re the only race in the universe that goes camping. Celebrate your own uniqueness.” And I think the next time i go camping, I shall think of Torchwood. And, of course, make sure never to go camping in the Brecon Beacons, as anyone who has watched that particular episode of Torchwood will understand.
