i got a 75 on my math midterm! WAAAAA!! *sob* *sob* *sound of wrists being slit* *thump*
Math Counts on Tuesday! Yesyesyesyesyes!
I got a 90 on my calc final! w00t.
And I have about 40 or so AP questions I still haven’t done.
Math is fun. My teacher is not.
math would be fun if I actually had a nice teacher.
I will hopefully be able to finish algebra 2 by the end of the year. I finished geometry a few weeks ago and I didn’t stop doing math. I’m swamped in math. mathmathmathmathmath.
I sit in the back of my math class with my fingers in my ears and work through my book. I don’t think my teacher knows my name but I have the highest grade in my class…its pretty awesome!
Okay. So. My school district fails when it comes to advanced courses. There’s no possible way to advance past Algebra I in eighth grade (my mom asked my teacher) and we don’t even get to take the Regents until next January! As in 2008, when I’ll be in ninth grade. Why? Heck if I know. Never really occurred to them to tell us. So yes, I’m stuck having my abilities underused here in Algebra I. Hence why our Math Counts team sucks so much – I know we could learn more advanced stuff if they’d just teach it!
My brother is a math nerd, so I hate math merely because of him. I think I would like it otherwise, though. It can be pretty fun. Anyone do any math competitions other than Math Counts? I’m doing the AMC.

Margaret, I’ll see you in two days, I’ll be wearing my MuseBlog signature sweatshirt through the lunch break but I’ll take it off and wear a bright shirt by the countdown round because they’ll (hopefully) notice me as standing up faster to answer questions and be able to identify me, and I need every advantage I can get against Sameer the freakishly smart. He’s fast. He was the highest individual last year. I’ll try to find you during the beginning or the break after the sprint round.

OMG!! i am in love with math. but i hate my teacher. so far this year, she had taught us a lot, just one problem. IT IS THE SAME EXACT THING THAT WAS TOUGHT TO US LAST YEAR. so the class is boring. and i feel math impared when around out of school friends……………….*_*.

We’ll start using graphing calculators soon, like next week, even though my TI-83+ can’t hold games because of some memory error when I tried getting them from Robert’s TI-84(+? not sure), and because of the one possible schedule configuration for math people in band going to the high school, I’m in all the classes with the smart people, who are/have become my friends.

Geometry. Unfortunately, there is no honors geometry. There’s honors everything else, even honors art. Go figure.

I think i prefer abstracted ideas. I definately liked algebra better than geometry.

I hate math, Ebeth!!!! I am good at it, though, or so everybody says, but I just think about the hating it aspect. I took AP Calculus last year, and got a 2 on the AP exam, which means I got way less than 50% correct on it. Yeah, I’m real good at math. All they way up to the test, I had to listen to my dad going on about how I’d do better than my sister, he was sure I’d do great, and that I’d do better than her. *several screaming arguments in which I said, shut up already about comparing me to my sister! I am not smarter than her, she’s smarter! Him saying I never said you’re smarter (Oh, really, then why say I’d do better????) And you will do good unless you keep that negative attitude because you’ve been doing good on the lesson work! Then me: That’s the lessons, which are open book!!!!!!!! Lot’s of tears on my part*
My sister got a 3, and when she did the Calc BC AP test the following year, she got a 4 on the AB Calc portion. Oh, yeah, I did way better than my sister. Oh, well, I got out of taking calc BC. I took highschool level introductory statistics first semester this year, and am going to be taking college level intro stat, this semester, whenever my books arrive, mom ordered them last week or the week before. Might have to take Calculus again next year sometime, though. But, if at all possible, I will take something else….

I really like math. My favorite subject in school is gym class, but my second favorite is math. I like doing addition and subtracting numbers. It is also fun to multiply, but I did not learn how to divide yet. I can do some dividing with little numbers, but I don’t know how to do big numbers.

i usually like math classes, but the algebra 2 teacher is pretty much the boringest guy EVER. he loves to talk about random stuff that is only slightly related to the lesson and so everyone is really confused and half the class literly sleeps. hes a nice guy though so i always feel bad not paying attention because he is pretty much obsessed with teaching, its his entire life.

computing is so much easier (love my calculator!), but abstract stuff is so much more rewarding to solve.
I LOVED MATHCOUNTS in middle school! we went to state and everything (state had so many genius people there it was crazy, but fun). our high school only has this one math competition at the end of the year, and it is nothing in comparison. What math competitions are there for high school kids?

I’m on my school’s math team, and I actually had a pretty good record before I died at the last competition. T_T -hates inequalities forever, yes we does, precious- I pretty much shot my chances of making regional team, goshdarnit. But we can still pwn N********* *****, N** *****, and E******* (my home school) at conference happily, so I’m okay.
Who else took the AMC today? I hate the AMC in general (too much geometry), but I think I didn’t totally fail this time, which is good. I know I didn’t make AIME, but there is next year and the year after next and I’m actually an English geek anyway.
Saying that curious and questioning is “good at mathematics” is an understatement. She, ladies and gentlemen, came in second place at the competition today. No mean feat! There were about a zillion people there. And they were really smart people, too. So there. xD Congrats, curious and questioning! (Who, obviously, I met today!)

I got second individual!!! *happy* Of course, this would be much bigger news if I hadn’t had to do social studies midterm review and could have come online before Margaret to tell you, but I am joyous. I was so surprised. I’m only fourth chair (even though I think I’m better than the current third and at least equal to the current second). I thought it would be Helen. My jaw dropped. I was, and am still to some extent, in happy shock. I do this for fun. If I’d tried to win an award, it wouldn’t have happened. And I saw Margaret!!! Also much more impressive if I was the first to say it, but still cool. And my school got first place team!!! Our four team members’ scores were 26(me!), 24, 19, and something between 24 and 19. We’re going to state(again)!! Even though we’ll be lucky to get two people in the top 100. Then I did nothing for the half of ninth period I would’ve been in math at the high school normally. I am joyful!!!

27- Can you diagnose my calculator issues? I hadn’t cleared the RAM in awhile, but I didn’t put anything in the RAM either. Both calculators are barely-used new, I think he was trying to put on this puzzle pack thing with 4 games, it was on a short and bumpy bus ride, so I didn’t exactly get a chance to examine it. I didn’t take them apart until after the error.
More on my improperly functioning calculator. It can recieve programs. I learned how to write simple programs. It first shows”garbage collecting”, then a memory error when I try to copy any game-like things from TI-84+ calculators. I will next try to connect it to the computer. (in a few days, once I install correct software and find and borrow a friend’s non-USB link cable or buy my own)

We spent ninth period tossing our “voodoo doll” around in the cafeteria which is how Kevin happened to rip out my earring (we were kind of tussling over it).
We had to miss the countdown round because it took them an hour to get the stupid projector! How did it go?

Speaking of stupid mistakes, you know that really easy question in the team round about the cube that was cut in half and they gave you the length of the hypotenuse and everything? Well, we split the questions between our team without looking at them first, and it turned out I was the only one who could do several questions that weren’t assigned to me. So after I did mine and an extra and waited for everyone else to finish, I still had about three more to do, and I didn’t get to that one until after the minute warning and had no more time to finish. We could’ve done so much better! Next time…oh, wait. I’m in eighth grade.

We had to leave the countdown round early. I wasn’t paying overly much attention because I’d already won. I made some stupid mistakes, got one or two right I think, and didn’t bother doing the harder ones- Sameer would finish them faster than me anyway, went my reasoning, and I was still awed by my trophy. I want to go back next year too!!! They don’t have high school math counts. That might be a good Gold Award project, but not more than locally, and they do have a science olympiad team at the high school. I got stuck on that cube one for a while, then I got it. My team’s good, so there were ones they did I couldn’t, and there was one, I forget which, that we all got different answers on. We should’ve started shouting random numbers. You’re allowed to talk. Like we were planning to all stand up as soon as the countdown questions were posted to keep Sameer from getting them. Mark was like, you say an even number, you say an odd number, you always say pi Annie, I’ll try to do the question… But it didn’t happen. I always say, we should do that! the most when I’m trying to persuade myself.
I did the AMC 10 and got 100.5. Not a wonerful score, but better than i expected. i’m only in 8th grade anyway. When i first figured out my score, i was pretty happy and assumed the rest of the family would be happy too because i got over 100. but then i found out my brother got 150 on the AMC 12, so no one gave my 100.5 much attention at all. This is a very good example of why i hate math.

It’s cool to read that so many people like math. Somehow I always was under the impression that people hated it.
Congrats C&Q!! Its that you and Margaret got to meet.
AMC stands for American Math Competition or something like that. It is mainly for high schoolers though younger people are allowed to take it. It’s a multiple choice test with 25 questions in 75 mins. The AMC 10 is easier and for anyone 10th grade and under. the AMC 12 is harder and for 12th grade and under. I think there is also an AMC 8 for 8th grade and under, but the 8 isn’t as important as the 10 and the 12 because anyone who gets a good enough score on the 10 or 12 gets to go on to the AIME (American Something Math Exam, I think) which is harder, non-multiple choice questions. It’s 15 questions, but I’m not sure how long. A few hundred of the top scorers from the AIME get to go to the USAMO (USA Math Olympiad), which is a two-day test, each day you get 4 1/2 hours for 3 questions (hard ones, and you have to write proofs, which is why it takes so long)
from the USAMO 60 people get to go to a summer camp called MOP or MOSP, (Math Olympiad (Summer) Program), though most people call it MOPS. There are three different categories of MOP:
red MOP: the top 30 ninth graders
black MOP: the top twelve or so people from USAMO, any grade
blue MOP: the non-ninth graders who were in the top 30, but not quite good enough for black MOP.
The black MOPers take yet another test, though i have no idea what it’s called or what’s on it. the top six scorers on that test get to be on the US team for the IMO, or International Math Olympiad.

My high school has no math team that I’m aware of. Sigh. I think I heard about the AMC, though, but not by that name. The math teacher said something about a test with a tenth grade level we might be able to get in that also had a twelfth grade level and I didn’t follow up on it because I figured all the spots would go to tenth and ninth graders because of the priorities and the limited number of tests given and I had two more years anyway. Next year for sure, though.

I like playing with calculators, because it is fun to press all the buttons and make funny equations. I like using my sister’s graphing calculator the best, because if you press the numbers they make lines on the calculator and sometimes they look really funny.
I like my math class at school because my teacher is nice and she helps us learn the math we are supposed to learn.
I was afraid that algebra would be really hard, but it is actually just hard enough to give me a challenge. I feel like I am soaring like a hawk in math class!
i’m in math counts for my skool. there’s two from the 7th grade algebra 1 class (thats me) and two from the eighth grade algebra 1 class. i’m the only girl though, and apparantly i’ve been the only girl since a long time ago, which makes me lonely. also, they put the picture of teh team up on teh Wall of Geeks. nobody looks up there though. still. i don’t really know how math counts works. my teacher gave us these tests to choose the top two in the class, but i don’t know how the competition will go. its on saturday teh 17th, which i just figured out is also my 2nd-level black belt testing, so i will have to choose between them. or hopefully Shihan can reschedule that. anyway… can anyone explain how it actually works? is it like a team with buzzers and such, or is it tests like we did in class? help!

Found it! Part 2. Copy&pasted, with changes for improved accuracy:
There’s (up to) 4 team members, 4 individuals, and 2 alternates. The 1st round is sprint- 30 questions, 40 minutes, no calculators, alone. The 2nd round is target- 8 questions in groups of 2, 6 minutes for each group of 2 questions, calculators (not graphing ones; never graphing ones at math counts) yes graphing calculators, not ones with a qwerty keyboard though allowed, alone. The 3rd round is team- 10 questions, 20 minutes, calculators allowed, the 4 team members are one team, the individuals are another, I’m not sure about the alternates, but only the team’s score counts for the team. And the alternates’ scores on individual stuff don’t count either, I think. The stuff that doesn’t count is for fun. Then there’s the countdown round. 50 questions put up at the same time for all to see, calculators allowed I think but not much use not allowed technically, alone, whoever answers first gets it. Counts toward individual scores but not towards team except for how individual scores influence team. Doesn’t really count That’s for the chapter level. The top 2 or 3 teams per chapter go to state. At state level, the countdown round is between only the top 10 or 12 in the state, and obeys its own rules I don’t remember the best. The others are the same, only you can’t bring all the individuals and alternates to State, only the 4 team members and the highest individual as an alternate. I was 119th in the state, so the state competition round doesn’t concern me at all.
Our team made it to state! Hurrah!

Math is average. Graphing calculator is memory cleared before every test so nothing has a chance to get back in it.
MathCounts State competition is Saturday!!! I have to wake up extremely early for it. Oh well. It is joy.
I was going to post this on the random thread right after leaving here, but it fits here better.
Standardized math testing is next week. Unfair. I got an 800/800 on the standardized math testing last year, and 100 on the regents, and I’m a grade ahead in math. I know math already!!!!! Don’t waste my time with mindlessly simple problems. I have better things to do with my life. It’s boring.

83 – You’re lucky you got to go to state this year! I’ve been doing Mathcounts for 2 years now and last year we did really well at regionals. But this year they sucked (I didn’t even make it to regionals! *sniff* It was really sad). At state last year we didnt’ do very well tho they did horribly at regionals. maybe it was becasue I wasn’t there.
