6-yes. I am still working on ideas for he subject, but everybody seems to like snow-days. Maybe we could write about the various types of frozen moisture.

Anyway, to elaborate on “yes” (heehee): most songs are poetic, and often ryme:

    Snow, snow, snow,
    It is so white,
    O’ let it blow,
    all, all night.

That was terrible, me. Now you know why I am not having much luck with writing songs with my guitar! :)

  22. e~a the sock monkey says:

A song I rather like that rarely anyone’s heard of (vincent by Don McLean

    Starry, starry night
Paint your palette blue and gray
Look out on a summer’s day
With eyes that know the darkness in my soul

    Shadows on the hills
Sketch the trees and the daffodils
Catch the breeze and the winter chills
In colors on the snowy linen land

    {Refrain}
    Now I understand
What you tried to say to me
And how you suffered for your sanity
And how you tried to set them free
They would not listen, they did not know how
    Perhaps they’ll listen now

    Starry, starry night
    Flaming flowers that brightly blaze
    Swirling clouds in violet haze
Reflect in Vincent’s eyes of china blue

    Colors changing hue
    Morning fields of amber grain
    Weathered faces lined in pain
Are soothed beneath the artist’s loving hand

    {Refrain}

For they could not love you
But still, your love was true
And when no hope was left in sight
    On that starry, starry night
You took your life as lovers often do
But I could’ve told you, Vincent
    This world was never meant
For one as beautiful as you

    Starry, Starry night
    Portraits hung in empty halls
    Frameless heads on nameless walls
With eyes that watch the world and can’t forget

Like the strangers that you’ve met
The ragged men in ragged clothes
The silver thorn, a bloody rose
Lie crushed and broken on the virgin snow

    Now I think I know
What you tried to say to me
And how you suffered for your sanity
And how you tried to set them free
They would not listen, they’re not listening still
    Perhaps they never will

    OH! ranty-rant time!

I don’t really deserve to complain, but I was a bit distressed at the fact that my band director placed me in the highest level band for next year, when I specifically indicated in my audition sheet that I was only auditioning for the middle-level band. I mean, high level’s good and all, but I’m not that great of a musician and most of my friends are in middle-level. She only did it because, according to her, the other bass clarinetist (who also moved into high level band) and I have tones that go well together. Meh. So my one attempt at not being an over achiever failed. Ironic or what?

27- Yes, Vivaldi is great. Mozart is OK, Beethoven is good but a plagarizer. He took ideas from Clementi, and Viotti. The beginning of the final movement of Beethoven’s violin concerto is very very similar to part of the Viotti concerto in G major first movement. But what’s wrong with Bach? Besides the fact that everything he wrote sounds the same.

I think we need a questionnaire, and as such, Axa to the rescue.

1 What is your favorite song/band at the moment?
    2 Favorite classical instrument?
3 What’s a song that has a deep/significant meaning to you or in general? (State why, if you like)
4 If you could meet or see any musician (dead or alive) who would it be?
5 If you have a music player that allows shuffling, pick the…um..42 song that comes up. Or the tenth, whichever is easiest.

Answering my own questions XD :
1)Lately I’ve been listening to a lot of Johnny’s Entertainment. Which is actually a company or whatever but you know what they have beautiful voices. Mostly NewS and KAT-TUN. -cries-

    2) The cello! I think it has such a deep, sorrowful and soulful sound…if I could play any instrument, I would really like for it to be the cello. Or the piano!

    3) Just because I’m listening to it right now, Ain’t Afraid to Die by Dir en grey. The song doesn’t have very heavy instrumentals, but it’s enough. The emotion in Kyo’s voice gives the song everything; at once anguished, raw, and fading away. The lyrics, paired at times with the piano, are simple enough, but paint the vividest picture…and ajfnabajk I’m rambling but this song is amazing I can’t get over it.

    4) Conor Oberst (Bright Eyes) Or Miyavi which could have happened but noooooooo

    5) HAHAHAHA VANILLA BY GACKT. Okay this is the best song ever. Vanilla Live=Fond memories.

    4) I don’t think I’d like to meet one of my fav. musicians. If I had to pick, I probably would pick Johann Strauss just because he was the “Waltz King” and I did a report on him in German class. 32- um, everything Bach wrote sounds the same? It’s more like everything Vivaldi wrote sounds the same.. Bach’s stuff is reallly diverse and interesting. Vivaldi wrote the same exact piece 300 different times.

Okay, so I just got back from all-state orchestra, and it was _amazing_. This is my second year to go, so I kind of knew what to expect, more or less. We played the Bartok Concerto for Orchestra (hard hard hard) and the Dvorak Carnival Overture (fast fast fast) and it was really fun. I was actually kind of surprised that we managed to pull the entire thing off.. I love the bassoon solos in the second movement.. so great.. Actually, this year, I think the thing I gained out of it most wasn’t playing in the orchestra (we had a really fantastic conductor and violin sections last year, and while this year was good, it wasn’t as good) but a sort of feeling that yes, I actually did belong in the firsts in the top orchestra.. Also I met a lot of people and hung out with my friends and stuff and had a really good time socially..

1 What is your favorite song/band at the moment?
Bartok Concerto for Orchestra. Pretty much the entire thing. the violas are great in the fourth movement, and the bassoons in the second. And the fifth movement is like wow, especially when you’re taking it at 500000 miles per second like we did.

    2 Favorite classical instrument?
    violin, yo

3 What’s a song that has a deep/significant meaning to you or in general? (State why, if you like)
Shosti 5th symphony. All-state last year. Mindblowing.

4 If you could meet or see any musician (dead or alive) who would it be?
    George Harrison.

5 If you have a music player that allows shuffling, pick the…um..42 song that comes up. Or the tenth, whichever is easiest.
10th- Britten: the Young Person’s guide to the Orchestra – Theme.

Ah, the old “all sounds the same” idea.

It’s the way your brains work, me dearios. I’m not sure if it’s inbuilt or cutlural, but the mind is obsessive about categorising things. When it meets something new, it shoves it in a broad category (eg. big loud animal) so it can recognise it again. If it has to deal with the same thing repeatedly, it will progressively narrow down the category ( big loud brown scary animal) until it gets down to the critical details (This – lion. This – cow).

So, all Chinese people look the same if you haven’t seen many and never held a conversation with one. All trees look the same if you’ve never wandered through a forest desperately searching for the one that sells conkers. And Bach all sounds the same. So does Vivaldi, so does Wagner, so does all classical music if you’re not familiar with it. Likewise rap, yodelling and Javanese gamelan. It’s only when you’ve listened to LOTS of Bach that your brain gets familiar with the similarities, ignores them and starts seeing the details.

Oh, and beware of prejudice. Any prior antipathy can lock your mind into the similarities and stop it seeing the detail. It’s the foundation of racism, and it’s the reason a lot of people will say they don’t like classical, rap, gamelan, country, whatever, because it’s not “cool”, or polite, or worthy, or it’s boring, or it’s the wrong shade of green.

Ironically, a lot of people can’t stand Wagner because he was a proto-Nazi, and a lot of his music is racist. Alas, it’s true, but he was also a genius. If FrigidSymphony can work out how Wagner organised those vast chord sequences to create the epic structures of the Ring, we could get Wagnerian Rock. Now that would be a major contribution to world music. Or not, depending on how it turns out.

62- I love Brahms Hungarian dances. I have DEFINETELY heard of Anne-Sophie Mutter. The point of viola is that some people prefer the tone of a viola to the tone of a violin. Piano is such a great instrument. I quit because I got bored and wanted to focus on violin more. I just don’t have time for practicing violin and piano. I wish I did, because it’s a real drawback for my composition not being able to play piano very well.

64- Vivaldi influenced Bach. I don’t really enjoy things Bach wrote for piano. His violin compositions are AMAZING… I mainly admire Vivaldi because his style of writing was completely new.

The point of the viola is 1. it’s lower, and 2. it has a different tone. 70. FrigidSymphony: “You people?” Are you referring to my religion or what? I can’t believe i’m even answering this… Two points:
    1. You’re taking one line from the song and basing your opinion of said song on that. The song you’re quoting from, “Casey Jones”, is about a train engine driver who wrecks into a train coming the opposite way. It is not supportive of, or even about, cocaine use. Next time you want to quote a song, try listening to the whole thing first.
    2. This said, i’m not going to try to deny that the Grateful Dead were heavily into drugs. They were. However, you yourself said, “If I hear talent, and I might not like the music, I can still respect it…” I try not to base my musical likes and dislikes on the personal lives of the musicians. If i did that, i’d be stuck listening to the wiggles or something. Sure, if all their songs were just obvious encouragements to take drugs, i probably wouldn’t like them. But they rarely directly mention any drug in their songs. And their stuff actually makes more sense to a person in his right mind than a lot of stuff from their heyday. And don’t you try to tell me that the Grateful Dead didn’t have talent or i’ll probably virtually kill you. Everybody screws up, some are just more obvious about it than others. It’s not like taking drugs made them bad people. Or at least not any worse than anyone else. That is all; sorry for the rant.

Answering the survey because I like surveys.

1 What is your favorite song/band at the moment?: Mmm…heavily into Garbage right now. So I guess they count.
2 Favorite classical instrument?: Cello. Or bassoon. I play both. :D
3 What’s a song that has a deep/significant meaning to you or in general?: I think “Walk On” by U2 is really quite deep, just because it has so many nice layers to it. There’s the activist part of it and the global part of it and the terribly personal part of it. And it’s a really good song. Just in general.
4 If you could meet or see any musician (dead or alive) who would it be?: Dunno. Actually, I have no clue on this one.
5 If you have a music player that allows shuffling, pick the…um..42 song that comes up. Or the tenth, whichever is easiest.: My music player that allows shuffling is my laptop, and my library is pathetic right now, so I’m not going to attempt this one in real life. I will instead pick the song I am listening to right now, which is “Such Great Heights” by the Postal Service.

@genres: There are two kinds of music: music you like and music you don’t. These categories are fluid, and vary from person to person. I like Apocalyptica. I like U2. I like Gackt. But just because I like them doesn’t mean other people have to to have good taste in music. If they do, that just means they have similar tastes to me. Someone who hates all three and likes, say, MCR (I apologize, metalfaery, but I never understood their appeal) does not necessarily have bad taste in music, but different taste. No music is inherently superior or inferior. The way people hear it and interpret it changes how they feel about it and how good they personally think it is.

67 Ah, Bach’s piano music. Another old chestnut. Bach didn’t write anything for the piano. The early piano existed towards the end of his life, and he did play around with them, in association with his mate Gottfired Silbermann, but there weren’t enough around to be worth writing music for them. All his so-called piano music is for harpsichord or clavichord. The reason you’re not keen on it might be because it’s always played on the wrong instrument.

And now talent. You’re pushing all my buttons on this thread.

Forget the idea of some God-given aura called talent. It’s a myth. Sure, some people have a natural aptitude for the arts, but 99% of it is hard work. Mozart beacame a musical genius because his father started intensive training when he was 3, and by 6 he was playing concertos, composing and becoming a celebrity. If his dad had been a carpenter, Mozart would probably have ended up as the finest furniture maker in Vienna.

Composing is about the management of complexity. Most people can invent a decent tune, and by hammering away at a keyboard, they could work out some chords to go with it. But doing something really interesting with it is another matter. In the right hands, a ten-second snippet of music can be upended, twisted, supported, paraphrased, and generally extended through variations in instrumentation, key, tone colour, until it turns into a quarter of an hour of compelling, inventive music, which hangs together as a whole without ever repeating itself or becoming random or tedious.

You only get to that level by spending years trying your hand, studying other composers, learning the tricks of the trade, and constantly challenging yourself to create something more difficult, complex and interesting than anything you’ve yet attempted – ultimately, something more difficult, complex and interesting than ayone else has ever achieved. It’s also a distinct advantage to be a really good player on several instruments, so you know the parameters by instinct, adn understand how they fit together.

That’s why Wagner is so brilliant. He can construct a continuous, compelling narrative lasting over an hour, which hangs together as a whole, but constantly changes, drives you along emotionally despite your misgivings about the antisemitic undercurrents, and all seemingly constructed from odd scraps that you could hardly call tunes. He does it by having an absolute, total, hard-won understanding and mastery of how music works.

And it’s the same with painting. But I have to go and get a mailshot in the post.

    Have fun!

I love the Zombies! I agree wth Pentatonikk. I think the phrase “good taste in music” is really pretty ambiguous. However, talent is not. Some music just takes more mastery of the instrument used, or the voice, to play. For instance, some singers have good voices, like, say, Grace Slick. Others, like Neil Young. have pretty average voices. But Neil Young can play guitar rather well and Grace Slick doesn’t really do anything but sing. Anyone who has read my other posts would know that i like both Pink Floyd and the Grateful Dead. Within the category of rock, their musical styles are very different. Pink Floyd is extremely precise and exact. If a single note were at the wrong time or the wrong volume, the whole song would fall apart. With the Grateful Dead, the same song is rarely played the same way twice. If you skip a chorus here or add a few words there, who’s going to care? And they can improv like nobody’s business. Both bands have great instrumental talent but used it in very different ways. Bands can be talented in different areas and still sound good, if not necessarily to the same person. Bands can be talented in no area, become extremely popular and sound pathetic to anyone with half a brain.

    2 Favorite classical instrument?
    Flute! w00t!

3 What’s a song that has a deep/significant meaning to you or in general? (State why, if you like)
Ooh, trickey. Every now and then I pick a song that feels most like me at the moment and listen to it for a while.. havn’t done so in a while though.

4 If you could meet or see any musician (dead or alive) who would it be?
Aggh, another trickey one. Umm… the Beatles all at once is way up there, but I’d also really enjoy meeting Butterfly Boucher…

Why, why did they send her over anyone else? How should I react? These things happen to other people. They don’t happen at all. When you’re following an angel, does it mean you have to throw your body off a building? Somewhere they’re meeting on a pinhead, calling you an angel, calling you the nicest things. I heard they have a space program, when they sing you can’t hear there’s no air, sometimes I think I kind of like that and other times I think I’m already there.

Sorry about that. I’m currently listening to that repeated over and over again and it’s stuck in my head. I’ll shut up now.

I can play two or three 2 octave scales on my trombone. You all with your 12 three octave scales can’t do a proper glissando, though.

180- Okay, I’ll get them then post reactions later after I hear them.

    172- Okay.

Hmm, it was interesting. I like the way the guitar sounds, but not the screaming quite so much. Though now we see that the actuall reason guys grow their hair long is so they can flip it up and down while playing guitar and screehing.

still listening, and one of the guitarists is now drinking red bull durring a lull in the music. Oddment.

    More hair-fliping. Hmm.

Well, I have to say that was diffeent from what I normally listen too.

I’m currently doing weeding in iTunes. Listening to songs in a smart playlist I just created of songs that haven’t been heard yet. I have some pretty weird stuff in here. The Dr. Demento CD. Why’d I put that on here? Why not, of course. And the Drowsy Chaperone soundtrack. That’s new (last December) I’ll listen to it when I want to relive the show sometime. Deteriorata is surprisingly funny. Anyone ever heard of it? And now something new is coming. I think I bought the Relient K album because it was one of the things suggested to me on the bus to mathcounts. By someone whose suggestions I was feeling especially receptive to. It’s not bad. Really, it’s almost the extreme of early tmbg, the serious songs, with more guitar and drums. Almost. I was worried by the itunes bio mentioning religion, but it’s not bad, and they haven’t said much yet, so I’m ok with it so far. And the song titles can be the best. I’m making excuses now. Really, if I need excuses, is it good? And some of the songs are bad quality (from downloading?). I’m rambling and trying to multitask while devoting my full attention to the music. Not working. As you can probably tell. But seriously, it’s really bad quality sometimes. Should it be doing that?
Pay no attention. Thinking while listening to music for the first time or reading doesn’t work well. An immersion thing.

And I always go to the local summer band program my teacher runs, jr. high/hi skool monday nights whenever. And I think marching band starts over the summer, but I really don’t know about that yet. So that’s a yes? Maybe? Since this is the Music thread.

    (177) Helloween! One of my favorite bands listed them as and inspiration for their music…wow I definitely need to listen to them. If you had any suggestions for particular songs i would certainly appreciate that. And I agree with your later comment about screaming being an acquired taste. While I’m not exactly listening to screaming, I have been listening to heavier music, and it’s a lot better than before, somehow.

I love listening to completely opposite bands one after another. For example, a song like “Sugar Pain” by the GazettE and then ANYTHING by NewS oh lordy this is fun.

I recommend all of you use radio.blog to listen to music online. No really, half the stuff I like, I wouldn’t have been able to hear if not for that site.

185- Yeah… I don’t really see many people falling for it the first time. I did notice the tricky guitar bits, though, they were cool.

Reacation to songs listed in 180

Power(Helloween)- I liked this one. It seemed a bit heavy for me the first time through, but then after I listened to it again I liked it more. The lyrics are cool too… It’s a bit screehier then my normal stuff, but I like it.
Mr. Torture(Helloween)- I like the opener on this one… the lyrics are a bit creepy, but I expected that. The guitar part is cool, and they’re voices/singing are… interesting. In a good way.
Into the Moonlight(Dream evil)- I like these lyrics… they’re cool. I like this one a lot.
Sweet Child O’ Mine(Guns n’ Roses)- Another cool opener. I didn’t like this one as much at first, then when I listeded more I liked it better. It’s not as heavy as the other ones.

Back in black by acdc I couldn’t get, camron said it’s not on iTunes yet, so I’ll listen to it on You Tube or somewhere. Or that radio.blog place Axa sugests.

Haha, I made my friend Lianna listen to these in Bio, and her words of describing them were “Bondage mistress/kinky kinky.” Her words, not mine. Her way of saying metal(ish)/goth-emo, though it’s not really.
