Who likes archeology? I think it is fawntastic. I really like learning about dinosaurs and prehistoric creatures as well as ancient ruins and old religions. What do you guys think?

You’re talking about a few different topics. Archaeologists study mostly artifacts (tools, buildings, artwork, etc.) from cultures and civilizations that arose after the end of the last Ice Age. Paleoanthropologists study mostly bones of ancient human beings and their early-human and ape evolutionary ancestors and relatives, generally within the past few million years. Paleontologists study fossils of all sorts of living creatures, starting with early microorganisms billions of years ago and including vertebrates such as dinosaurs as well as invertebrates (insects, jellyfish, etc.).
They’re all interesting–just different.

I like learning about the really early life forms, before the dinosaurs, i.e. Burgess Shale creatures. Incidentally, has anyone read A Short HIstory of Nearly Everything, by Bill Bryson? Really good book.
OMG!!! I love ancient egypt, and other ancient things are also really interesting. Did you know that when the pyramids were first made, they were coated completely in white stone, and topped with gold? The stone was used for other buildings, and the gold was stolen. It’s so sad.
Problem with studying ancient Scandinavia is that all the pre-christian artifacts were destroyed, by the weather or christianization.

27 – Okay…….. One of the algebra teachers was talking about how this one guy was able to recite a very large number of the digits in pi and it took him four hours to do it. He didn’t memorize it, he just understood how it worked. I found that rather creepy, seeing as I am about as far from “mathematically minded” as you can get.

32-yes! tis the best, inferior only to that one i can’t think of right now. naruto centers around Naruto Uzamaki (duh) and his fellow ninja. there are ranks:
1)Academy Student
2)Genin
3)Chunin
4)Jonin
5)Hokage
Academy students are kids training in the ninja academy, attempting to obtain the rank of Genin.
Genin (naruto’s rank) take on D and C ranked missions, which are easy and usually involve helping citizens of the village and doing odd jobs. Genin are organized in squads of three, and must take the Chunin exams to obtain the rank of (you guessed it) Chunin.
Chunin take on B and A ranked missions, and are qualified to lead squads of Genin.
A Jonin is an elite ninja, second only to the Hokage. they lead squads of ninja and are often sent on extremely dangerous missions.
Hokage is the highest rank of ninja status; they preside over the entire village and are in charge of all the ninja of the village.
There are five regions, the land of waves, the land of fire, the land of earth, the land of lightning, and the land of wind. each have their own ninja village, and there are also a few other villages. here they are:
-village hidden in the sand
-village hidden in the mist
-village hidden in the waterfalls
-village of sound
-village hidden among the stones
-village hidden in the rain
-village hidden in the grass
-village hidden in the leaves
chakra is the source of power for jutsu, special tecniques that drain chakra from the body but have various effects on physical matter and, occasionally, effect the mind.
there are also many weapons; i will list them here.
-kunai knives
-throwing stars/miniature shuriken
-throwing needles
-that huge sword that Zabuza Momochi uses
-shuriken
-Might Guy’s windmill
there are probably others, i just can’t remember them.
i think that covers the basics. reading the manga and watching the show is highly recommended.

YU-GI-OH? mar has a horrendous plotline, no actual battling (the ARMs just get eaten by each other) and absurd characters. yu-gi-oh is basically some twit and his friends battling using cards that summon up holograms to fight each others holograms with. the actual TCG is okay, but the manga and the cartoon suck. i’ve never read Cardcaptor Sakura. i’ll try it.

I couldn’t ee the eclipse. I was looking, it was cloudy starting around noon, then it snowed hard from 4-6, then lightly for 2 more hours. I was outside almost the whole time it was supposed to be, but I couldn’t even see the moon until a little after 8, then it was bright and full, but I missed the equinox!!!!!

I was going cross country skiing while the eclipse happened. It was cool. I’ve seen one before too, though I’d like to see a solar eclipse. I remember the muse article ages ago on eclipses.

anyhoo we got an E-mail about it and it said the time and month and day.
so we went and saw and it was kewl.

(76) kt th gr8, I saw it as a pale orange-y glow, very ghostly. The moment I liked best was when the first edge of the moon began to slip out from the shadow, so suddenly bright, like the light under a closed door.
I had the good luck to see this eclipse with an astronomy group. There were more than a dozen telescopes to choose from in addition to the observatory on campus. Not to mention there were all kinds of knowledgeable people delighted to answer questions. Afterwards we looked at the Orion nebula, Saturn, and a few other sights.
If you’re interested, before the next event, check around your area for astronomy clubs. Even if you don’t want to be a member, many of them invite the public to viewing nights. If there are observatories near you, find out what kind of public viewing schedule it has. I was surprised to discover there are several within a short drive of where I live — one is at the community college just up the street from my office and I didn’t even know it existed until three years ago.
By the way, Wikipedia has a nice selection of pics, taken from various locations, of Saturday’s eclipse.

My favorite story about my grandfather is that when he was a navigator during WWII, his feet were so big (size 16) that they didn’t have any boots that fit him. The army actually had to have his shoes specially made, so for a few weeks he was stomping his feet during the flights to keep warm. When he finally got his boots, they came in 2 bowling bags, one for each shoe; with a note attached reading “Don’t lose these, we’re not making you another pair!”

I’ve been reading many books about obesity and health. My mother is very worried that I’ll become anorexic. I just say, “No, I’m just never eating at McDonalds again.” Anybody read Fast Food Nation? That book is scary. And gross. And mentally disturbing. Fortunantly I got over it.
I’ve never really completely understood anorexia. I think it’s people who are so scared of becoming obese that they don’t eat at all. Either that or it’s people who are very underweight. I’m not underweight, but I am lower than average. I like food way to much to starve myself, though.
153 – You probably have a very inefficient metabolism. It just means your body doesn’t process all the food it’s getting. And it depends on your height. There’s a kid in my class who is 12 and barely weighs 50 pounds, but he’s also a 18 inches shorter than everyone else in the class. If you took a photo of him and enlarged it to normal size for kids his age, he looks normal. I think he just grew that way.

166- i used to rock climb, it’s awesome! Now I have no where to go though.
besides swimming, it is the best all body exercise i can think of. i do love to sail though, i discovered a small sailing club in my town called wet pants. we’re like a ghetto yacht club compared to all of the other sailing spots around us. sailing is good for balance and arm strength if you’re in small boats. i hate the rich guys who sit around on their sailboats and use their engines. just buy a motor boat so i can avoid you!! sorry for the rant.

I am 15, abot 5’2, and you should never ask a girl her weight unless you want to get beaten up. Well, I don’t mind cause I’m not obsesive over it (around 110ish) but other people… it’s just not polite, too. Plus I have more musce than fat because of hockey, and muscle weighs more than fat so weight isn’t really an acurate way of telling what someone looks like.

Ha! I am exactly 5 feet! It has taken me 14 years to grow this tall. I’m somewhere in between 85 and 95 pounds, and would rather be slightly overweight (which I’m not) than be super skinny and never eat. Plus, you can eat a lot and still not be overweight if you exercise a lot too. Ooh! this is kind of off topic, but did you know that when you run, it’s not good to listen to music all that much? It’s because all the blood goes from your head to your arms and legs, so there’s not a lot of blood in your head and you have to crank the music up and up until you lose your hearing.

frigid symphony- my dad is 6’5″ and on the height/weight thing he is supposed to be like half his weight and if he was half his weight he would be skin and bones.
i’m 13, 5’7″ and weigh 115 lbs. when i was talking to some guys randomly about how much we weight, this one guy started making fun of me when i said i was around 115 pounds. he called me fat and a lot of other things. but i know he’s wrong.
i’m not anorexic i never have been. the only reason i would have a chance to become anorexic would be if i was bored and didn’t feel like eating. i do a lot of stuff because i’m bored, usualy good stuff but some times i do really bad stuff. well not that bad. i was bored durring a rehearsal so i gave myself this cut on my thumb that’s just healed. i took my thumb nail (of my right thumB) and rubbed it against my other thumb untill it was red and raw and i kept rubbing because i wanted to see if i could make it bleed. i did it on my pinky too. it hurt. but i was realy angry, so i think that’s part of the reason i kept going. i can endure a lot of pain.
one thing i know i wi;; never ever do is commit suicide. death scares me so much. so does thinking about the meaning of my existance and how there’s no point because i’m gonna die anyways. it’s scarry. it’s really really scarry.

When I’m stressed out or studying I have a tendancy to pull my eyebrows out. Sometimes if I’m studying late at night I’ll also pull my hair, although that’s more so I’ll stay awake..

I think about death a lot after my grandpa died last year. All of a sudden, it seems so possible, you know what I mean? It’s actually happened to someone I knew really well.
I’m not an emotional person so it doesn’t really bother me when I do think about it, and I don’t fear death for myself, rather my family and friends – but I only really start thinking scary thoughts like, “Would I give my life for my little brother? How about my mom? What about my friend Isabel?” Really late at night when I can’t sleep, and than I get freaked out.
I want to live my life here to the fullest, and I get more depressed about wasting time instead of the prospect of actually dying. Right now I’m learning a bunch of Damien Rice songs because a female friend of mine loves his work and requested ’em of me, since she also loves hearing me play… If only I could spend more time with my friends and my guitar, instead of wasting away my teenage years in school…

206 – Yea. I had never really thought about death much before 2004, except when my great-grandmother died in 1998. I remember my parents telling me she went away and we wouldn’t be able to see her again. I got so mad, since we lived only an hour away from her and hadn’t gone to see her in a few months or something.
I still remember an awful nightmare I had about her dying. In my dream, I was floating in this mysterious room, all painted beige. The ceiling was pretty high, and there was a staircase at one corner. Everything was beige, except for the clothes of a few old people standing in one corner. They were around this woman who was sitting in a wheelchair, who was my great-grandmother. When I looked at her, she smiled at me, then her skin started turning purple. She started shrinking, and her legs and arms started twisting. She dissapeared, and I would never see her again…never…never…NEVER…NEVER…
But then in 2004, my great-grandfather had a stroke. I knew pretty well he would die in my lifetime, but it was still a shock when I first found out. I remember moping around the home, listening to his worsening status, until one day my dad said, “he died.” That sent a sort of surge through me. I was shocked, but then I sort of wasn’t, since I had expected it. However, now death is very real to me, instead of something that “just happens to other people outside the family.”

What sort of freaks me out, though, is the thought of no life after death. What happens, do we float around in mysterious blackness forever? Do our souls dissapear and we become nothing? What would that be like? How can you just “dissapear” and not do anything. You know you have a “soul”, which is your inner self who feels anger, emotion, and is “you”. You know what I mean? Now think of that stopping. How would that happen? After pondering it, I don’t think it’s possible for a soul to just “end”. It doesn’t make sense.
That’s one of the reasons why I like some religions. They give you hope of something more, not the command to make this world a better place in the blink of an eye you have here.

216- I know exactly what you mean. That’s sort of what I’m freaked out about. Losing your consciousness, what makes you think and feel. That it might just end. That’s part of why a lot of religion makes me so suspicious to, how people can just believe that there’s something next. Don’t they ever wonder if they’re right or not?! What is there’s nothing that happens after we die? I’ve woken up in the mornings and just been really, not afraid, but freaked out about how something could have happened to me and I might have died in my sleep and not known. How could you? You’d be dead. Nothing. Stoped.

See, to me the idea that there is nothing, absolutely nothing, after death is comforting; how would you know you’re dead since there’s no thought or no “you’? It’d be like going to sleep forever, no consciousness, etc.

what also scares me is the world ending while i’m still alive. in gr.5 i went through the death faze and now i’m going through the death-and-world-ends-and-what-happens-after faze. do any of you know how scarry it is to have your thought taken up by that stuff and your mind always wandering back to that no matter how hard you try?

Anyway, I hope I don’t die for a while, yet, especially since I need to go to State S&E with my quartet, but, if I do, I have my ideal parting (and rejoining) with this world all planned out: first, I want to be cremated, then have a handful of my ashes taken and tossed into the wind blowing over a large body of water. Those ashes will then touch bottom, and, over time, will be hit by light and darkness, and will be electrocuted at some point, and, also at some point, somebody still alive will think of me, and love me. Now, does anyone know why I want t this way?

my goal is to be a good, generous, value-filled person so I can get to heaven without too much time in purgatory. if at all possible, I’m definitely going to confession soon before my death. once again, less time in purgatory. also, i’ll try to live my life in poverty as much as possible. well, probably not that much, but just normal priest-ish poverty. i’m gonna become a priest, probably. the pastor of my parish is awesome. he’s been here, like, 12 years, so he’s leaving in June. he got our school air conditioning as well as a new gym, lunchroom, balcony in the church, and many other things. he plays guitar and likes to ride his Harley. Yeah. he’s awesome. sry I kinda changed the subject. right. death. ummmm…. yeah. my 4-step plan:

The French do it differently, but then they’re French, and (fortunately) on the other side of the channel. The only really hairy experience is in the middle of the channel tunnel, when everyone has to suddenly swap sides.
The English and American methods of writing dates are equally illogical. A tip – if you are saving dated files on your computer, write the date in the form 2007-11-23. Windows will then automatically sort your files in date order in your folder. Incidentally, 9/11 means 9th of November over here, which causes delightful confusion among modern history students.

276 – I’m not sure how the topic got to death. Sometimes people say, “we should talk about this!,” and sometimes (in this case), someone just says something in a post that makes someone else say something else, etc., and the topics morph incredibly! (Is this making any sense?)

What really annoys me is when people misspell things on purpose, like ‘choklit’. Typoes are fine (i mistype all the time) and I don’t mind too much if you actually don’t know how to spell the word, though i look up words i don’t know and i think it would be better if other people did too. But when people misspell on purpose really annoys me. And why? because I’m a speller.
