i do contra dancing every third friday.
Does anyone know where to get some great dance moves?
My friends and I are dancing to “Wang Chung” for our school “Variety Show” (it’s a talent show.)
[Snipped link to YouTube XF0otWk2c04. –Robert]
(CAUTION: VERY PIXELEY)
But in this video, there are no dance moves I can pick up.
We where also thinking of “Video Killed the Radio star.” By the Buggles.

My computer is being an idiot, so no more right now.
I want to learn folk dancing. And I want to learn the kind of dance they do in Jane Austen movies.
The Jane Austen dancing is called “English country dancing.” Most big cities and university towns have English country dance groups, and there are plenty of weekend workshops. It’s similar to the New England-style contradancing that SuperSaiyan mentioned in comment 2.
I love WEST SIDE STORYDANCE!!
Kiki- Do I get the impression that you like west side story? On every thread you’ve been on you’ve raved about it. I think that we get the point.
i just like 2 dance my own craxzy style uv dance 2 whatever upbeat muzic i can find.
Do you know what I don’t like? I don’t like social dancing. I avoid it at all costs. It *scares* me! I don’t know why (I have taken enough social dance classes for it not to scare me) but it does.
What is the name for phobia of social dancing?
I don’t care for ballet much. It’s too… too… too something. Structured maybe? Not fun enough? Not a wild dervish. That’s it. Technically a dervish in a Muslim dance that might be religious… I looked it up. I think it was religious, but from now on, when I use it, I mean exciting and swirly.
If that made any sense at all. “swirly.” Huh.
I love ballet. I like modern, too, though. I really have fun when I mix the two together… My poor attempts of fusion, though, are not very admirable. What ballet technique do you other dancers do? Russian? French? Italian?
School dances scare me, though. I am assuming that is what you mean by social dancing.
yes, it’s actually Dragostea din Tei by O-zone, a Romanian band.
I like dancing around crazily to music! I like musical theatre dancing, tango dancing, ballet dancing, jazz dancing, modern dance, salsa dancing, random dancing and dancing in general. I took ballet at the local YWCA from age four to 6 or so, then started taking dance at a ballet place, then took dance at a different local place (where they taught styles other than ballet) from 6th grade to 8th grade. In 6th grade we put on a show of The Lion King and it was awesome. My first year at that dance place I took ballet and musical theatre. My second year I took modern dance, my third year I took musical theatre.
I took ballet and jazz step for abot nine years, then I quit. I’m still pretty good though…
ha! my longest name yet!
17- Looks sort of like what I sign my papers with
Ahh. Jadestone does not dance. Not in public, anyway. Sometimes she sways at school dances when her friends don’t stop bugging her. But not very often. I’m just not a dance-y person.
However, if I could learn how to Morris dance… learned about it a bit earlier this year, been telling ym friends we should get together and do one today (happy May Day, by the way) but no one really went for it. Sigh.
Haha, yesterday L said: “Tomarrows May Day! I’m going to dance around a may pole!”
Mr. M: *starts cracking up*
L: “waitno not that way!!
‘Twas amusing.
I like maypole dances. Unfortunately, I haven’t been able to actually dance around the maypole since I was a little kid. We tried to do one with some friends of ours two or three years ago, but I and the grown-ups were the only ones who knew how to dance around the maypole, and all the other kids were 8 or younger, so after a while of failing miserably the adults gave in and and everyone went every-which-way. It was the worst may-day of my life. It makes me mad just thinking about it.
I like contra dancing, I don’t do it very often, but when I do do it I like it. It’s wierd because I’m usually so shy I don’t like dancing with other people, but something about contra, and square, I can be a fool and so is everyone else but it’s not like school dances where people are just being dumb
18-“The only things in life you can knock before you’ve tried them are incest and Morris dancing.”
I know a few Latin dances. Aaand…that’s it.
I cant dance at all. Which is sad because I ♥ music. Like mucho ♥.
i do
ballet
tap
modern
that is all!
I like hip-hop and swing… Swing is reallllllllyyyyyy fun and get’s kinda sweaty… but it’s still fun! And… I just like hip-hop because I do.
Trinity, P. L.’s comeback was miserable at best.
18- Sounds the same. Except i don’t want to Morris dance. I like barn dancing though. We have one at our church every year and it is really fun!
My dance recital is June 9…Hip Hop, baby!!!
YAY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Dance thread! *does happy dance*
I take ballet and modern and I want to be a choreographer. Is anyone here on Pointe? What kind of shoes and padding do you use? I wear capezio’s glisse pro and I have lamb’s wool pads with rubber tips.
I am on Pointe! I use Ouch Pouches, which are like gel-filled thingys. I have Bloch’s Sonata, right now.
The method my school uses (primarily) is Cecchetti. What about you?
l love 2 go 2 mixerz. it’z just fun 2 stand around talking, really.
Here is my dance schedule:
Monday: Pointe from 7:10-8:10 Tap from 8:10-9:20
Tuesday: Ballet from 8:10-9:20
Wednesday Ballet from 6:40-8:00 Modern/Jumps and Turns 8:00-9:25
Thursday Jazz 7:00-8:05 Ballet/Pointe 8:05-9:30
Dancing is like my whole life. My mom is the teacher of my studio, so I started at age two. We are not strictly Chickettee, or however you spell it, but we do know it. I dont have a favorite, i love them all, and i would like to take hip hop, but i dont have time. I couldnt live without dance!!!! I just got new pointe shoes, they are Grishko, and actually pink instead of the ugly “Europian pink” kind, and the boxes are wonderful! I can actually feel the floor and get all the way up on my arches and toes!!! I used to use toe pads, now i use gelly ones with fabric on them. They are awsome!! Anyway TTYL!
I forgot, how long have you guys been on pointe? I have been for two yrs. Usually i end up with the hardest shanks, even when i break them in, and its hard to get up on your arches and toes, but this time i specifically wanted softer shanks, and i love the shoes!!!! They are as comfortable as pointe shoes get!
If people live in or around Princeton, NJ, they can join the Millstone River Morris team. [snip] Search for “Millstone River Morris” on Google, and you’ll find it. Then, you can join, for free! [snip] . XD
*GASP* I used to in Princeton Junction!!!! I did ballet from age four to age eleven. I don’t anymore. But I was in sleeping bearuty as a little lower in the opening scene, and I got to wear a real tutu!!! And I was in Coppellia as a little village maiden or somefink like that.
I have been on pointe for three years (I started in sixth grade). Does your school make you calamine your shoes for performances? Mine does, usually. But then they loose all of their shiny-ness!
My schedule always seems to change, because… Well, I don’t realy know. I do a floor barre, sometimes, (floor barre used to always give me a headache, but now it does not), I do a jazz class (I’m not very good), and I do many ballet classes. I also help out with my sister’s class, which is fun.
I’ve been on pointe for about two years. I take ballet four times a week. One day the whole class is on pointe and another day I have modern afterwards.
can someone explain to me what exactly was snipped on glassboro’s comment?
Personal identifying and/or geographic information.
7- i know how to do some of that stuff.
29- same
32- i’ve been on point for almost 3 years. i you want softer shanks you can get your ballet teacher to cut them. that’s what she did to my friend. everyone tells me i have stong feet.
3: My school has a Variety Show too. Hey! Do you live in Ohio?
Dot can’t dance but she wishes she could. She really tries not too look like a loser at parties and homecoming.
Our teachers just let us leave our shoes the same for performances. Last year we had to have our recital at this place that had a stage that was waxed wood. Every time we went up en pointe we could feel our shoes slide the tiniest bit, so we had to put sprite on the bottem, along with rosin. It was horrible.
Who here loves Martha Graham? I love her, i was born exactly 100 yrs later. Isnt she one of the greatest dancers ever? Her last performance was at age 75, and she choreographed her last piece at age 96!!!!!! How awsome is that?
Yeah, Martha Graham is awesome. I didn’t know much about her but I recently went to see the ensemble perform and they were really good. Her choreography was amazing. The choreographer I know the most about is George Balanchine. Wish I could have met him! Who are everyone’s favorite dancers? What classical ballets has everyone seen? I’ve seen The Nutcraker (of course), Coppelia, Swan Lake, The Sleeping Beauty, and A Midsummer Night’s Dream. A Midsummer Night’s Dream (Balanchine’s version) was really awesome. Swan Lake and Coppelia are probably my favorites.
Speaking of dancing, we have a school dance tonigh. *sigh* I don’t really want to go, but a) it’s to raise money for the band so we can get nes unifors because ours are 50 years old (literally. Some of the parents marched in them) and b) my friends already called to tell me what time they’re picking me up and saying ‘no thank’s don’t bother’ didn’t work. Meh. Another night of being pestered. Joy. *sarcasm alert*
what do you people, like, do at school dances? I’m homeschooled and I don’t do any way, shape, or form of social dancing.
44- I’d like to know that too, actually.
44-45: Well I for one just sort of copy how I see other people dancing, if it’s not too, erm, riské. I try to just let loose but I’m a very awkward person. It doesn’t matter much though because everyone’s gone crazy by the end of the night (some by natural causes, others artifically ;); don’t worry I don’t do that stuff) and you’re just having fun. At least if it’s a good dance and not a disaster like Spring Fling this year.
haha, we should start a list of tips for school dances.
Tip: Go hide in a corner.
I have not seen too many classical ballets live. I have seen more videos, though.
44- Personally, I stand in a glum position and refuse to let myself be danced around by ther others. But other people dance. Though most sort of, em, well… it’s not really dancing or the most part, but if you give it a very loose interpretation I suppose you could call it that. Durring slow songs you mainly sway side to side and don’t move your feet.
Answer me a question. Why does everyone scoff at Morris dancers? Is it the handkerchief waving? Or is it just that they seem to be drinking a lot of beer, doing something uninhibited but legal, and having more fun than the rest of society, and the rest of society’s jealous? Any ideas?
49 – it’s bcoz all those strict people think that drinking anything but wine is absolutely inappropriate for anyone. beer is better than wine, BTW. don’t ask me how i know.
Deep in their hearts, the people who scoff at Morris dancers are just yearning to try. Their only wish is to begin Morris dancing… They begin to grow pale, knowing that they are to cowardly to show their true feelings, and face the scorn of others… Oh, the pain! XD
All of you ballet dancers, does your school give regular classes during the summer?
I never scoffed at Morris dancers before I joined Millstone. By the way, did anyone look at it?
51-yes, thank goodness! If I didn’t have dance I would just walk aimlessly around the house.
Dancing. Fun. I did some sort of prelimanary-ballet-mabob when I was three, started teaching myself bits and pices of Irish, did hip-hop for a few months after that, kept on learning Irish, did ballet for about a year, had an evil teacher in ballet, started my little cousin learning everything I knew, and watched the Riverdance movie…well, more often than I needed to, to say the least of it. And now I’m in the dance club at school, and teach my little cousin everything I can think of, including Acro.
Wow. Talk about a weird training history.
My studio kind of brings in guest artists, and sometimes people go to other schools, for camps and suchlike. Things are less structured during the summer.
What about…
Favorite blister remedies?
Or how to choreograph a dance when you know barely anything of the dancer’s skill and don’t have the song? I’m in huge trouble.
My school does regular classes during the summer, i would be lost without them, dance is my whole life, whithout it i would be nothing.
Or we could talk about how great Morris dancing is!
59- What is Morris dancing?
49- I don’t scoff at them at all! It’s one of he only forms of dance I’d submit myself to learning. Not so sure about the beer drinking, but the rest of it sounds really interesting. I havn’t shared this yearning with my friends becaue I normally don’t dance, I’m not very cordinated durring normal life, and one of them is a really good dancer. And there’s no where to learn around here that I know of
Search for morris, or something of the sort. There might be a side around you. You’d definitely be welcome to join Millstone if you were close enough.
I am on a ballet intermediate/advanced class. It is my second year and I really enjot it.
I have been taking for 11 years. I am totally freaking out, my dance recital is on Tues. and Wed. and i am in 8 dances!!! Plus there are so many people i know in the audience, and we performed today and i spaced for like 2 seconds, which is an eternity when you are on stage!!! But otherwise we did fine. But i am scared to death about the recital and all the costume changes!!!! *starts to shake*
I want to go to a ball where they do English country dances.
65- At the cotollion I went to we did an english country dance. It was wonderful. I really loved cotollion.
WHOA this thread has been left to die…
Dead thread! Dead thread! *hint hint*
I like figure skating. Working on my double axles!
I know! Aren’t dead threads sad? I thought so four days ago…
OK so we are getting attention for this thread…
I love to dance! All of my dresses are lush!

That was my friend who is sitting beside me. She is seriously obsessed with dancing.
