May Random Thread, Part 3 — Happy New Year!

Stack of towels

We confess it: this picture has nothing whatsoever to do with any New Year we’ve ever heard of. But we think we can be forgiven for sneaking in this small (and colorful) tribute to Douglas Adams.

And Frank seems to be MIA, which is odd. Hopefully he comes back. He’s a cute frog.

I need to go learn lyrics and practice now. Or do homework. Or SOMETHING.

Actually, speaking of homework….I haven’t heard anything from the GED office about my scores…..that’s kind of worrying. It was at least a long-ish time ago that I took the test, yeah? Uglarg I hate the GED office.
Wait, just checked (is it pathetic that the way I checked what date I took the test was by finding a picture I took on that day and checking the timestamp? I think it’s pathetic.) and apparently it’s almost been 6 weeks…and they said 6 to 8 weeks. So…I guess…soon? Ish? Hopefully? UGHLARG.

Unschooling is totally legal. This is how it works: To unschool a child (at least in my state) you write a letter to your district saying in what situations that child would encounter education and then they leave you alone. It is a legal type of homeschooling, as FantasyFan?!?! said. I am not unschooled, but many very intelligent people I know are.

It’s really different from person to person. For me, it’s basically self-directed homeschooling. I generally refer to myself as a homeschooler to avoid the “what the heck is an unschooler?” response. I know lots of different unschoolers, and they all have different definitions of what unschooling is. Many unschoolers are as or more educated as schooled people of the same age. Some are “dropouts” (how I hate that term….), some have started out unschooling and tried school, and a lot go on to college. I know one who’s 16 and got accepted into a really good college.
I’d type more, but I have to go, so I suggest that you go to unschooling dot com, and do a Google search for Grace Llewellyn.

    Hmmmm.
So at graduation Paperclip and I talked while fanning ourselves with sheet music (it was HOT!) and I discovered that I laugh at things that aren’t even remotely funny. Also, Zombie Apocalypse was fighting with him during a break and I said “I think if I put you two in a room alone together, I would open the door an hour later and find you both dead.” and Paperclip said, “No, you would find him dead.” and I laughed.
Then today I was playing Polish poker in math with Oboe and Daedalus, and Oboe sang about naked mole rats.
I’d tell the rest of the story about the mole rats and the Norwegian chapstick, but I don’t know how appropriate it is.

Thoughts and stuff running through my head:
    1. My dad and I found a baby robin outside in the garden. It’s wing was injured; it couldn’t fly, but it was fairly big. I hope it lives. We put it in the underbrush. (At least we saw the mommy and daddy dive into where it was too.) My dad saw a crow hovering around the garden earlier, and we think it tried to eat the baby robin. Our cat is not being let outside for a few days.
    2. The apple trees are in blossom.
    3. Two hummingbirds were spotted near the apple tree in our yard; I was climbing it, so I stood still for a while and just watched them. At one point the male got close and perched on a branch, so I saw his beautiful green feathers. They were so shimmery and perfectly tiny and flawless. When he left I could hear his wings thrumming. I hope I can see the female again. I only saw her once.
    4. Humboldt squids can work together to hunt. SQUIDS ARE COOL.
    5. Did anyone think that there was something vaguely suspicious about *spoiler spoiler spoiler* pictures of the Humboldt squid being published in the last Muse issue?
    6. I took about five million pictures of the apple blossoms and strawberry blossoms and the cabin and the baby robin. Some of them actually came out okay.
    7. Cuttlefish are cool.
    8. My science teacher is going to dress up like Robert Ballard when we have our live museum and dress up like people on the Titanic. And it will be EPIC because my science teacher has a serious case of scientist worship. We saw a live talk by Robert Ballard.
    9. We really need a squid symbol.
    10. I’m covered in blackfly bites.

Sorry this is late, but I believe the nearest wildlife rescue center is several counties away. We have a humane society, but they don’t take wild birds. She’ll be okay though; we’ve spotted the mother and father around our house a lot at the moment, going near where we put her, so we’re fairly sure she’s alive and they’re feeding her. We can’t keep her ourselves and feed her, nor can we take her to a wildlife rescue center, so this is the safest option.

Follow-up on my vintage instrument romance:
My band director says it will be fine for jazz, but for classical I would have to have a lot of control over intonation which I… don’t… My parents are looking on Craigslist and Ebay. I have told them not to because MY HEART BELONGS TO THE CONN and I would be willing to adjust and work really hard on intonation from classical, and besides, I never play classical tenor, but I might start, I don’t know, and… I tried another Conn 10M there and it wasn’t as marvelous. I know that this might sound weird, but I will only be satisfied with THAT Conn.
I’m worried that they might buy an instrument over the Internet. Last time they did this, I ended up with a cheap, student-model, no-name-brand, alto. My parents were all, “Look, AL, it’s shiny and it costs next to nothing”, and I’m all, “So is tinfoil.”
So maybe I will just have a star-crossed-lovers relationship.

I know how you feel. They are all used instruments, so there are going to be minor fluctuations in the playability.
The Conn is similar in that it (supposibly, I haven’t checked this with a chromatic tuner yet) will be very hard to get the pitch right. I think this is Great because it will encourage me to practice more, especially over the summer. Also, any other modern horn (there was this nice new-ish one for 11 hundred dollars more) would be more expensive, and I’d rather spend that money on mouthpieces, reeds, and a new mouthpiece cap for the school-owned one since I lost the one it came with.

If you have an instrument that will challenge you to learn how to play better and you love it then I’d say it’s a win-win. Bonding with your instrument is extremely important.
When I went to get my new violin (several years ago) we went to the store, told them a price range, and then retreated to a practice room with a bunch of violins and a handful of bows. Most of the instruments I played were lovely, but they just didn’t feel right, then when I picked up the one I eventually got my first impression was “WHOA” then “hmm, not sure…” then “no, I want this one. NO OTHER VIOLIN WILL DO.” It was a close match with another really dark sounding gypsy-ish instrument, but I’m SO glad I went with the one I did. ♥
(Sorry, that was a long ramble…anyway, bonding with your instrument is good.)

Re: Ren Faires: ….no, I’m not going to go there right now.

ANYWAY. UPDATES ON FERN’S SUPER EXCITING LIFE:
So I went to play music yesterday with the pirates (I’ve mentioned the pirates before, they’re two musicians plus entourage who snagged me into their group because I make noise sometimes) to see how things fit together, get a feel for what playing music as a group would be like, etc. And it went well! First thing Stacy (guitar player) said to me (this was the first time I’d met her) was “I have chocolate cake. Really good chocolate cake.” So I hugged her. It was FANTASTIC cake. Like eating fudge only a billion times more decadent, plus a port chocolate sauce. OH MY HOT PINK BUNNIES.
Where was I? Oh right, music…anyway, we played, we sang, it was fun, they decided they’d keep me, I decided I’m cool with being kept by them, so everyone’s happy. Crashed on the floor of their tent, hung out this morning and then headed home. I may or may not play a gig with them next weekend. I’d kind of really like to, but it’s a schedule conflict with a family reunion, so…I don’t know. Even though this is family that I don’t really have a lot in common with, some of them are coming from the west coast, so……blargh. WE SHALL SEE.
    But it’s all good! :D

(Also, on the drive home I realized that Stacy has the same last name as another rendezvousing lady that I know and have heard sing….turns out, yup, that’s her mom. Sense = made. It’s a small, small world after all….)

Picnic at friends’ house was good, despite my being super tired. And now I’m off to eat strawberries and ice cream (even though oh MAN I am SO FULL), because the strawberries need to be consumed. Soon.
Then TO BED and try not to completely roast because cake it is hot.

Re: Challenging instruments: I meant to comment on that. Having an instrument that requires you to be good at something you’re not good at yet is a great instrument for practice. For instance, my piano has a really heavy touch. Thus, it’s finger exercise, and I can play more quickly and nimbly on other, lighter pianos. Likewise, one of the organs on which I sometimes have lessons is is a small chapel, and the organ itself is very–I can’t quite find the right word. Sort of like delicate–but anyway: I have to concentrate a lot more on getting the right touch and tone. The clavichord is the same principle. It’s an extremely small and quiet instrument with a great capability of expression. If you can play the clavichord well, you’re set.

In performance, though, a whole ‘nother set of criteria opens up. I’m still in love with a Bosendorfer Imperial Grand that I played at a competition a few years ago. That piano somehow knew what I wanted to play, and it sounded identical to my imagination. The slightest adjustment in my fingers resonated divinely through the soundboard. I loved that piano. I wish I had a few hundred thousand dollars lying around so I could buy one. I’d also want to build an acoustically perfect, fire-, flood-, tornado- and earthquake-proof building to put it in.

*sighs at the memory of that piano*

Although since we practically ate every meal at a mall food court, I don’t think I’m going to want to even look at a food court for a year.

We watched all three of their shows (a Peter Pan retelling, a pirate dating game, and a Star Wars retelling). It’s interesting–they have the audience vote by applause on how clean or dirty the show should be. We had one PG-13 show, one “a’R’g” show, and one “Just Plain Filthy”, the latter of which I’ve never seen them do before. Afterwards we went to the adults-only show with all the performers from the festival, though I had to exaggerate my age by a year to get in. Good times. Really hot and humid today, though. I sleep as well. :( I unfortunately have not had good sleep lately for various reasons…
    1) Wild sleepover watching exciting movies with friends
    2) good book keeps up all night
    3) volunteering at emergency vet clinic again…

So here’s what happened last night at the vet clinic. A dog comes in to get its nails clipped because they’re so long that the dog is limping. But this is not a normal nail job. Oh no. Somehow the dog managed to get a horrible infection of its nails to the point that they were falling off. We had to put the dog under anesthesia to clip its nails because it was in such pain. 3 of the nails just fell off when we pulled a little. For 4 more, when we clipped the nail, pus started to come out. After soaking those feet in a clean solution, those 4 became lose enough to pull. So doggie came in with 20, albeit painful, nails and came out with 13 nails and 3 paws wrapped in bandages. (One foot’s nails were all fine eerily enough. Funny how that works.)

I went errand-running with Mom today. We got twin sheets for college (I am so not used to the concept of shopping for college I mean seriously WHAT IS THIS?!), and when we were at the register I pointed to a bag of gummy bears.
    “Hey mom, look….yum.”
    “Okay, sure.”
    “Wait, what?”
    “Get them if you like.”
    “Really? I mean….really?!”
    “Yes, really.”

So I got gummy bears. My mother has changed dramatically since I was younger. I didn’t even have to throw a temper tantrum, threaten to hold my breath until she got them for me or anything. (Though I never did the breath-holding thing anyway, as far as I remember.) WHAT IS THIS?! My mother actually BUYING ME CANDY?! Without even rolling her eyes?!

I couldn’t find any umeboshi at the store, so I can’t make any with that. I felt really out of place at the store. The only white person there. Alas.

I completely missed my two year blogiversary. It was on May 25th. Oh well. Anyway, I have been on MB for two years!

Latin was just generally SO awesome and emotional today. Everybody suited up in Roman gear (Toga! Toga!) and had a mini banquet – everybody brought in a food item, so we had a nice combo of baked ziti, bread and olive oil, grapes, etc, as well as cookies, brownies, and a cake. We sipped sparkling apple cider out of fancy wine glasses while toasting old memories and laughed about inside jokes we’ve had since 6th grade.

Then, we all opened up these time capsules that we made in the beginning of 6th grade in Latin – before I had discovered MB – and ohmygosh was it weird/emotional. It was so strange reading notes from my parents and friends when I was 11 (11!), but also awesome to know that some things, like the fact that I considered Harry Potter to be my favorite book series, never change. I also put in some pictures of myself in. (I think I looked really different, especially without braces.) Basically, it was just a really amazing time.

With 6 days left of middle school for me (ever!) I realized as I was sitting at the table with all of my friends surrounding me how much I’m going to miss those that aren’t going to my high school. I’m just SO comfortable around them all at this point and the fact that I’ve had the same Latin class for three years makes us all so close and practically a second family. gahhhh mushiness.

Okay, time to post a calm, rational post.
Yes, I got on board. My friend Belinda and I are co-agenda chairs, and we’re the only sophomores on board. The rest are juniors. They’re really a fun, amazing group of people, and we went to dinner to discuss some things and mostly just have a lot of fun. It was such a nice diversion. They had me laughing so much that I started to cry.
We started talking about next year a bit, though, and we’re getting exec board hoodies, trying to pull everything together a bit more, and may be having a murder-mystery dinner theme congress next year.
Okay, sorry, but how awesome would that be?
The people on board are absolutely perfect for their positions, and I know that we can make our delegation one million times better than it was this year (it was pretty darn good this year).
