  1. Purple Panda says:

    Ooh! A new thread!

I’m really really really excited! THF and I are making a bunch of stuff for everyone, and we found something awesome in Mexico for the GAPAs. (Which we’re giving them/you at the Kokonvention). We would get one for everyone, but we only have so much money…

    And yeah. I’m excited! :D :D :D :D :D

Washington Kokonvention! Washington Kokonvention! Washington Kokonvention!

[I assume you mean Washington state? It would really help to be specific when you post, since we have sufficient confusion sorting out the Washington, D.C. event. Thanks. –Rebecca]

  5. Capricious The Great and Terrible (cappy) says:

I don’t know if I will be there on the fifteenth, but I am SURE about the tenth. But my mom didn’t actually get me signed up for the singing thing, so the fifteenth is a definite possibility.

Speaking of singing, did any of you watch the show where they pick the new “Grease” stars?

If so, you’ll know Laura. Yeah, I come from the same town as Laura! I was so happily surprised to see her there! Yeah! She played Dorothy in one of our towns “Wizard of Oz” plays. (The audience liked the play so much they continued it farther into the year.) Kendall (I dunno her last name) played Dorothy the first time, and I got t watch them rehearse. But yesh, I come from ze same town as zee Laura! Yay!

Sorry. That had nothing to do with the Kokonvention subject. :P

    1- OooooOOoooh… GIFTS?!?!?!?

  8. Taiwan Hippo Fan says:

5 – Yes, Cappy, GIFTS. Remember, these are two of the three soap carvers here! :D

I am uber excited about the kokonvention, you have no idea.

Alice – I would love to go to a Washington state kokonvention, but unless Panda and I do some uber-incredible-blow-their-minds-off-their-rockers sweet talking, I don’t think we will be able to come.

I was talking about you being as far away from Washington state as possible too, not you coming to WS on vacation. (Though that would be SUPER cool.)

A Kokonvention is a get-together of Musers and their parents. Chicago MBers held one last year. Now Rosanne, Lady Bunniful, and I are organizing a double Kkon to be held in Washington, D.C., on August 10 and 15.

18 (rabbity) – 4 hours? That’s about how far I am (if not farther), and I’m going. I might be able to come to NJ, though. Hmm…

25 (Traggle) – Yes!! I’ve been dying to go to Boston for years! I lived there for several years, and maybe that will be a good excuse for my parents to take me there. It does take ages to get there, though…

27 (rabbity) – It’s a day (or two, depending how many you’re going to), and you’ll probably be eating. I think we’re going to a restaurant, but the GAPAs can answer that better than I can. Actually, it’s a requirement that parents come!

  32. Red-tailed HAWK says:

27-Just one day each. And, um, Robert-is the food place called The National Press Club? I think that is the one he said…

Kt lives in Texas and is going, and Cappy lives, well, she just said, so most people seem to be prepared for the long haul. Yay for me-I only have an hour or so drive!

Here is the information from the last thread…

The GAPAs have been conferring amongst themselves. In typically all-embracing GAPA style, we’ve decided to hold two Kokonventions: a big one on August 15, and a smaller one on August 10 for those who can’t make the other one.
We’re still working on a program of events for each. Right now, the main difference is the August 10 will have three GAPAs present (Rosanne, Robert, and Rebecca), whereas August 15 will have just two (no Rosanne, alas).
So… roll call, please. Who’s still interested?

Parent(s) required. We also need to have emails from them giving permission. As we get the scheduling information settled, we will send it to the parents on our list.

NOTE TO ALL: At this stage, please be aware we do not really know who is coming which date. The attendance lists in post 32 are only tentative. Also, we have not heard from all the parents of those who have expressed an interest.

I can’t wait, I’ve got it marked on my calender with HPBs all over the place. I’m not sure about bringing a poncho and goggles, ’cause that would be too hot. Maybe I’ll just bring an extra set of clothes. Will we really need them?

50 (Robert) – Only the GAPAs need extra clothes? Hmph. *cries* THF and I had some success with the tinfoil pie tins-and-whipped-cream-makeshift-pies. And it was fun! (Actually, we didn’t do it yet, but it is GOING to be a success, and it is GOING to be fun.)

  54. Robert Coontz (Administrator) says:

Larry Gonick, who experienced pie-ing while on the road promoting his Smart Pies book, strongly recommends that we avoid whipped cream. He says the high butterfat content makes it hard to remove, and you smell like sour milk for days. He suggests shaving-cream pies instead. I think I’d rather be pied with something edible, though. Maybe non-dairy whipped-cream substitute? Clearly some research is in order.

  58. Vixen in the Eyes of the Moon says:

I looked it up online, and one site says sticking peeled and cored apples in a food processor with some water makes a really non-messy (hey, you don’t smell like cheeze after and it doesn’t stain) pie filling.

    easy pie filling:
    1. peel some apples.
    2. cut them into slices.
    3. take out the cores.
    4. stick them in a food processor or bender.
    5. add one tablespoon water for each apple.
    6. blend.
    7. stick in a tin pie form.
    8. cover for journey with tin foil.
    9. uncover.
    10. throw.

  85. Robert Coontz (Administrator) says:

We’ll have rudimentary name tags available.

ATTENTION! There is one thing the GAPAs would like to request: Please bring a pie. Not a real pie — a fake, symbolic, or “dry” pie. Any fairly substantial combination of materials will be fine: fabric, cardboard, foam rubber, whatever. It can be realistic or stylized, whichever you prefer. A strap on the back (e.g., elastic) will make it easier to manipulate.

(We’ll try to have a few extras on hand for Kokonventioneers who can’t make their own.)

Are we going to have a fake (fake? what do you mean fake? any pie is real! even if it’s made of aluminum foil and paper plates! gah!) pie war?

I know people can make their own pies without any help, but for the pie for my Kokopelli costume last year, I used an aluminum pie tin with a colored paper plate stapled to it – and for the handle in the back, I just used the extra pipe cleaners from my Kokopelli hair :D

  93. Jadestone says:

For this play Drama club helped out with they made pies for a few scenes that looked good and could be loaded up with shaving cream/substitte fillings. Here’s how they were made:

    – 1 pie tin
    – several peices of light brown (crust-colored) felt
    – 1 peice of foam, the really spongy thick kind you find protecting tvs and stuff in their bokes (not styrofoam.) Actual sponges can be substituted here (wet them first then let them dry, so they’re squishey)
    – Velcro (opt.)
    – scisors
    – a glue gun
    -markers

Take the felt and cu it into 1 inch strips, the cut those in thirds/forths/peices. glue one onto the pie tin at an angle so it’s a bit slanted towards one direction (glue gun glue holds better than regualr school glue, and dries faster). Glue the next peice of felt slightly overlapping it, and the third peice slightly overlapping the second, and so on around the tin. There you have your crust.

Next, take the foam/sponges and cut it into the relitive shape of the bottem of the pie tin. It should come about halfway up the sides. If using sponges, glue them together so they’re in one peice (I havn’t used sponges for this so it may not work, if they don’t stay together don’t do this).
Glue this insert into the bottom of the tin — OR — put velcro on the bottom of the pie tin and glue the opposite peic to the insert. This gives you an easy way to remove it and wash it if you’re using something other than shaving cream.
The purpose of the insert is to cushion one’s face as it’s slammed with a pie. It does make a difference.

Color the top of the foam/sponges with a marker in a fruit-filling sort of color (red, blue, or someother type of filling can work too) and glue more strips of felt over the top of theese in a criss-crossing pattern so you can still see the color. This way, even if it doesn’t have shaving cream/filling in it it still can resemble pie.

    Pie people! [}~
    :)

Hope this works, most I just figureed out as I went. We did make things like this, but they used a different, thick material instead of felt that was oddly shaped and hard to work with. No coloring/extra felt either.

I just don’t want to be the only person that shows up lugging an instrument. Also, will there be any safe place to put stuff, or will we just have to carry everything around with us?

South is downhill, in the direction of Pennsylvania Avenue and the Mall. Barnes & Noble is on the northeast corner of 12th and E Streets. The Kokonventioneers will Kokonvene upstairs in the cafe.

  191. Robert Coontz (Administrator) says:

Yes, I’m about to send around another e-mail burst. The agenda is simple:

Friday, August 10: Tour of “Science” magazine, lunch at the National Press Club, musical soiree.

Wednesday, August 15: Tour of NPR, lunch at site to be determined (maybe the National Press Club again, maybe somewhere else for variety), meet with Ivars Peterson at the Mathematical Association of America.

For each day, we’ll draw up a list of optional late-afternoon and evening activities for those who want to keep going. August weather here can wear you down, though, so we didn’t want to overschedule the Kokonventioneers.

    That’s the basic plan.

I think pie is something that can’t be constrained, and can’t be scheduled. It just happens!!! heehee!

Agh! My parents have just confirmed that I definitely won’t be at the kokonvention this year. We’ll be right in the middle of moving then, so there just won’t be time to drive to DC. But I hope all you lucky people who can attend have lots of fun!

Will this be an annual event? If so, I could probably make it next year. And Chicago musers, tell me if you have another konvention of your own! I might be able to make that one, too – Chicago’s not exactly close for me, but it’s a considerably shorter drive away than DC.

I would suggest a Kentucky kokonvention, but I’m pretty sure there aren’t that many musers around. Correct me if I’m wrong!

    Pie 0
    Squid 0
  198. Jadestone says:

191- Wait. Ivars Peterson’s going to be there too? Man.

If it does turn anual, perhaps we could move the location around from place to place, so everyone could have a chance. Or even if we kept it in the same place it’d be fine, I’d likely get to go to one, with a longer time to beg on bended knees ask my perents.

Hmm. Still rallying for a Chicago Kkv. Perhaps if there was another Chicago one, we could go to the Taste? Or the lake? Definatly I’d like to see if it could be arangd to get to the Muse HQ. But that’s another time.

  233. Shadowkat says:

Heck yes! Oh, this is kinda random, but I have a great story to tell.

So last Tuesday, I was hanging out with my bf (who is a redhead) on the dock by my neighborhood lake, and we were just laying there, looking at the clouds, talking about nothing in particular, when, all of a sudden, bf is like, “Hey, look, a plane…SAVE ME FROM THE SEA HAG!!!!!!!”. And I was like, “*gasp* I’m insulted!”, and he’s like, “No, you know I’m just kidding…[and then, in a whisper]…sea haaag…”. And I just burst out laughing.
So it was kind of a running joke for the rest of the day, and we decided that the Sea Hag (no, not the one from Popeye) could breath underwater (because she was already dead), and could control all the catfish in the world (I later decided that she could make nearly indestructible bubbles, too). It was pretty sweet.
So then we decided that he was Typhoon Adam (“Adam” being his name), and he could control water, and moved about by making miniature typhoons, and riding in them. And his hair turned blue when he used his powers (mine became seaweed).
The next day, we went to play performance (since we were both in the play), and told everyone of our imaginings. So of course our friends had to take part in the fun, and they decided that Typhoon Adam’s hair could light on fire, too. And then they came up with a bunch of powers/names for themselves, and everyone was happy.
    The end.

Sorry, that was really long, but it just came to me when we started talking about magik.

271- We’re leaving on August fifth to go see friends and national parks too, so I’ll be burning, burning with anticipation whilst on the trip.

Attention, Kokonventioneers! Don’t worry if you don’t feel inspired to make pseudopies (“dry pies”). The GAPAs will whip up some quick-and-sloppy ones this weekend so nobody will go without.

If you haven’t made yours yet but plan to, think small. These pie-oid objects are symbols, not offensive weapons. The lighter and more portable they are, the happier you will be as you lug them around the scorching, steaming, sizzling streets of Washington, D.C.

About the movie: the GAPAs haven’t scheduled any activities past about 3:00, when our musical soiree ends. After that, Rosanne has an appointment, and Robert will probably have to go back to work for two or three hours. So you’re free to do whatever you like, together or apart. Robert will be happy to store musical instruments in his office until the end of the day.

“Stardust” would certainly pass the time until dinner. (Speaking of food, a Haagen-Dazs ice cream store and a Thai restaurant are just downstairs from the movie theater, and there are dozens of other good restaurants nearby.) Of course, there are also many other things to do downtown. Your parents may have some ideas about what they would like to do.

And if we’re all going to be playing music, on the 10th at least, it would be fun to have a recording of it. Right now it’s scorching hot and muggy, and everybody in Washington is in a bad mood. Don’t worry, though: we’ll cheer them up.

Helpful hint: When walking around downtown, wear ear plugs. Seriously. There are a lot of sirens and construction sites around here. I never go out without a couple of little cylindrical foam plugs in a plastic case in my pocket.

You may take any pictures of me you’d like (I’m not camera shy) but you can’t post them on the web, plain and simple. :P

The Kokonvention is tomorrow. TOMORROW! AMAZING!

Do you wanna know what we did this week? I’ll tell you anyways!

First we went to KittyHawk where the Wright brothers FIRST FLEW!!! The FIRST SUCCESSFUL AIRPLANE FLIGHT!!!! How rad is that? Then we went to swim in the Atlantic ocean! It rocked. We jumped over waves and stuff (how descriptive!)

So that was day one, on day two, we went to JAMESTOWN!!! Historic JAMESTOWN!!! Where Pocahontas and Chief Powhatan lived until that guy…. who? I can’t remember because of his arrogantness! But ARCHER rocks so much harder than you-know-who!

Then yesterday we went to colonial Williamsburg! COOL STUFF MAN!!! I want to work in millinery! Yeah! And there, all the people dressed like they where from the 1800s!

Today we will be driving a lot and might see Thomas Jefferson’s home!

    Peace Out! See you Soon!

My parents have decided it will be better to park in a nearby parking garage they found than Union Station. Walking for almost an hour in the heat might not be fun, plus we would be all sweaty and gross when we got there. And riding the metro could be pricey too. But anyway, we are getting very close to kokonventioning time…Oh! Yes, I wanted to ask if the list at the top of this page is completely accurate, and nobody has decided to come on a different day than they said before. I am trying to only bring as many of the tags as we will need each day, if possible. But I don’t want someone to be sad if they don’t have one…I made Quintessentia one anyway, and maybe we can at least take a picture of it so she can see it…etcetc, it always seems like I’m forgetting something…

I’d hoped that we could hold the soiree at the National Press Club, but I couldn’t get permission to use their piano, so we’re holding it at a church a few blocks away. The choir room has a very nice Yamaha grand piano, which the pianists among you should enjoy playing.

HAHAH! I’m back in my own little home! Ready to report on kokonventionings!

First, I bumped into Glassboro a little early in the bookstore. Then we looked over to the escalators, and saw a huge mass of kids wearing Muse shirts and adults looking a bit travel-weary. We gathered around in a big group, getting in people’s way when they tried to get through, but as we were all wearing the shirts and holding pies, it didn’t take long for the whole second floor to clear out. There were times when we weren’t sure of what to say at first, but eventually the discussion started, and, as it is on the blog, at first it was like a random thread. Then it moved to more of a discussion thread, or sometimes a Muser Profiles thread. (I will now press return before I’m pied for making this impossible to read)

We waited for Shadowkat (who didn’t look like I thought she did-like mostly everybody)

We met Robert in the Science building. They told us about AAAS, and then Robert took us to his office. He was going to show us his license plate, but it was getting late ;)

Then we went to the Press Club to eat lunch, and found that the GAPAs had reserved a whole room, and there was a sign out front saying we were coming! :)

The food was great, and then we went to a *insert name of church-I can’t remeber the name! {hits head}* church where the Musers listed in Robert’s post played wonderfully. Then we went to this nice place-can’t remember the name but will once I send in the post in-where we got ice cream and other goodies. E-mails where exchanged. People started to leave, some staying for other events during the evening and some-like me-to go home. We walked a couple of blocks down, with shadowkat still talking to people back at the ice cream place, and the next thing I know she’s walking in front of us. How does she do that? :D

Itwaz very nice. It was nice to meet all of those Musers, and get e-mails, and it was great! Most people didn’t look how I thought they did, but I’m sure I looked different too. And I’m not saying anyone looked bad! :)

    Thanks to the GAPAs!

And yes, Robert got on at least three times to moderate! :D

Below is one of the songs Robert wrote from another song, which was sung during the kokonvention “Museical” part:

” Mamas, don’t let your babies grow up to be Muses
Don’t let ’em build gadgets or throw custard pies,
Stare into space of get stars in there eyes,
Mamas, don’t let your babaies grow up to be Muses,
They’re just a big pain, ’cause they’ll wear out your brain,
Telling you things you don’t know.

Muses don’t take life for granted like most folks you know.
They stand in the margins bemusedly watching the show.
They chatter and snicker and gossip and bicker,
    And somehow they allget along.
At the end of the day they will go on their way,
    Singing this Muse-ical song:

Mamas, don’t let your babies grow up to be Muses
Don’t let ’em build gadgets or throw custard pies,
Stare into space of get stars in there eyes,
Mamas, don’t let your babaies grow up to be Muses,
They’re just a big pain, ’cause they’ll wear out your brain,
Telling you things you don’t know.

hello all! I’m in the hotel in Alexandria, Virginia, and the wireless internet is finally working on my computer(although it might be some random nearby internet). The kokonvention was really fun. Thank you, GAPAs! I have nothing better to do now (since Microsoft Outlook seems to dislike this internet), so I’ll post kokonvention details from my POV.
Took Metro and then walked a block to Brarnes and Noble. Walking up the stairs, the first person I spotted was Capricious, soon followed by almost everyone else(including GAPAs Roseanne and Rebecca). Shadowkat was late, the rest of us talked for a half hour while waiting. We all walked to the American Association for the Advancement of Sciences, where Robert works. We listened to someone talk about the magazine Science and then someone else talk about science programs they were doing, like the podcast and kinetic city. Then Robert came in and talked a little about Science and about the kokonvention and stuff, and Roseanne and Robert pied each other, and we saw Robert’s office and jumped in the elevators (maximum capacity is a challenge, not a restriction!), and after that it was lunchtime. We walked to the National Press Club place and ate and talked more. Robert showed those nearby how he moderated on his Treo. This was around one thirty, probably, and I remember him reading comments 12, 15, and 18 aloud. Then, after searching around NPC a little, we found 2 computers, and Glassboro seems to have gone to the random thread, while Lady Visala went on the other computer to this thread. Then we split; people with instruments went back to Robert’s office to get them and those without went with Rebecca directly to a nearby presbyterian church with a piano. We musical-soiree’d until almost four, when Robert, Roseanne, and Sobriquet had to leave and everyone ran out of songs to play. Then we went to a nearby cafe and had ice cream(they didn’t sell pie :( ) and talked and exchanged emails. People were going to go to botanical gardens/jazz concert next. I don’t know; I had to leave after that.

Off to make email work, curious and questioning

I’m not going to summarize everything again, because so many other people have said it, but after everyone sort of “disbanded,” Glassboro, Capricious, Lady Visala, Rebecca Lasley, Robert Coontz, Taiwan Hippo Fan and I went to a sculpture garden and just sat and talked for awhile, then went to a pizza restaurant place for dinner. After dinner, we all got to talk to Robert and it was FLAMABLAMABLOUS!!! We got to see him moderate, (we saw a bunch of your posts before they were moderated – cool!) and he showed us a picture of Pentatonikk’s mom…also, we got to talk about tons of other stuff. Then, we went back to AAAS to see Robert’s car – he was parked in #42, and we got to see his flamablamablous liscense plate and such. It was so great – everyone was just like I thought, but they were also so different. One thing that was TOTALLY unexpected was Rebecca – I never knew she talked so much! :D :D :D :D :D

400-tee hee! it says Kokonvention there! tee hee!

that sounds awesome! I wish I were there!

And Robert, I (no longer in DC) did keep an eye out for Robert-ish figures but no luck. Ah well, my relatives live around there so I’ll be back most likely at some point. Eventually.

In the mean time… MN kokonvention, eh? Eh?

423-Yes, I wondered what hotel people did after house people left…Sounds like more of the same, but different, fun! :)

Oh-did I make it clear Robert was singing these great songs too?! Well he did, and they were so fr00dy! Robert could make CDs of him singing these songs, and sell them to all of the Muse fans! Unless he thinks the other editors would think him totally insane if they heard him singing them in his office! :D

I’ll post the other one if it’s okay…it’s amazing how well he matched up the number of words for each line to the original song!

A few hours after we got back, Midnight Fiddler had already sent me an e-mail! Can you believe it? Mail for me? I’m going to write back to her and everybody else I have e-mails for soon…

And yes, Robert and Rosanne pied each other. There’s a movie, so I wasn’t sure if I was supposed to wait to tell!

Robert has a nice window office! And a computer! And a desk! It was AMAZING! We spent at least 20 minutes in shock of how cool it was! No, really! It isn’t the normal office that has stacks of old Muses in little corners here and there!

I know I’m forgetting something here…but even though Robert said long posts are fun, I don’t want to slow the whole blog down! :)

426- Amazing. She sent me your address, so I’ll send one to you among others.
Why didn’t you post “Have a Pie” first?

427-I was going to post both of them, but it was 10:00 P.M., and my parents were telling me to go to bed. I posted the shorter one, essentially. I just responded to your e-mail!

Boy, the non-kokonventioneers are going to be mad now! We come on and say to “check your e-mail”? *grins broadly* Sorry!
