Hey, newcomers. Here’s some advice. Please try to put all your thoughts into one post. THIS IS NOT A CHATROOM.
Everything is moderated by the GAPAs. The GAPAs know all. Listen to them.
No pieing in aggression (at least until we change our minds).
“Pieing” is not a way to make fun of newbies, it is an initiation rite of sorts. So don’t be surprised when people start to pie you. It’s all in good fun. *pies for all*

“You must be,” said the Cat, “or you wouldn’t have come here.”

it’s not so much we don’t like people who act un MBerish it’s more that we don’t take easily to people who make chatroomlike posts such as “HI! WATS UP? WHERE IS EVERY1?” and then when a veteran MBer posts a post explaining that this isn’t a chatroom they ignore it and psot on a thread about HPBs that they love cucumber. so please. respect the rules and listn to the MBers when they give advice and i’m sure we will love you.

I mentioned this thread to penguini and Potato Chip earlier today. I think we’re going to force Lisa on the blog sometime soon. She’d fit in well, I think, and she’s the only non-MBer by the buses, that should change. We managed to overpower her by force, but there was no computer nearby, alas. I’m bringing in a recent issue to school tomorrow.

49- It varies. Whenever the blog is mentioned in the magazine, many new people come. Last time I checked (almost a year ago…) the least people we’d had come in a month was July 2006, with me, tmfa, and someone else. Anyone know more recently?

Aw, I just read this thread. It’s ever so much nicer than past Welcome threads. It makes MB seem like a nice place, not a place where we brutally lecture newcomers on proper etiquette, scaring them so badly that they are never seen again. Oddly enough, it’s a thread with almost no newbies…

    Hmm. What a coincidence.

48- After MuseBlog, I really dislike other forums. They’re so cold and scary and full of creepy old people. No one ever offers pie.
But I do enjoy going to other forums (particularly NaNo threads), pieing everyone (why does spellcheck acknowledge pieing as a word?), insisting that they vote Kokopelli and that Pwt Pwns, offering a cup of tea, and then leaving never to be seen again.

I’m really very different on the internet than I am in real life. Outside the blog/emails, I’m much more reserved.

You seem nice. You use good grammar and capitalization and spelling. I approve, not that you need my approval for anything.

A generation determines when you came. Someone (MG?), many years ago, made the first division of people into generations based on when you came and a complex system with graphs. I think it was Alice who updated it, using a less scientific system of every once in a while making it be a new generation. I think we’re somewhere in the teens with them by now.

  81. Glassboro says:

78-RE:77-RE:76– Yes, TDD is a good newer part of the blog. *pies TDD* Welcome back, again.

I’m going to randomly respond to when people stop being newbies for me, and say that it’s when they actually fit with the MB. That is, how I think of the blog. It helps a lot to have listened in grammar class, and is essential to make non-pointless posts. And you get a bad spin if you were annoying when you first came. By my own system I’d probably have been a semi-newbie for most of the time before my absence.
So people like Cliff Eagle, who may have mostly settled down by now, are still considered to be newbies by me. Maybe in a month, or whatever.

So now I’m going to leave the thread, and let you get back onto a happy topic. I’m not good at controlling myself when new people come on here (as anyone who arrived in the last few months probably knows…)

Hullo, Jadestone here. I joined Museblog almost two years ago, and was a shameless newbie until I calmed down enough to be embarrassed by my hyperness. Back then it was more acceptable, but now you’ll get eaten by ferocious wolves reprimanded for being off-topic or posting things that just say “FIRST P0ST!!1!”. So beware of that.

Hey there, Muse bloggers. Thank you so much for your intriguing words of welcome. For the past few days, I’ve been tied up extracting globs of butterscotch and lemon meringue pie filling from my eye sockets. Interesting experience.

I can certainly understand the mourning and gnashing of teeth that is accompanying Robert and Roseanne’s break from the Q&A columns. I love their columns, too. But I’d think of it as a hiatus. Robert, at least, needs some time for napping, yawning and lolling so that he can devote more energy to *Muse* in GAPA form — or other weird forms [liquid?] — who knows? I know Robert better than I know Roseanne, but I think it’s safe to say that both of them are devoted to *Muse*, so they will be flinging and receiving pies for as long as you’ll have them.

I know *Muse* well, since I have two fiercely passionate *Muse* readers in my home: Amelia, age 12, and Lucy, age 8 — oh wait —

    — I AM NOT 8. I AM 34. —

Hmm. Sorry about that. That was Lucy. She may be 34, but she is in 2nd grade. You do the math. —

    — HEY! —

Anyway, I love the questions you bloggers put out there, and Andy and I will try our best to do justice to your wit and weirdness. Robert, who is much more blog-savvy than we are, has been sending the questions our way, so keep them coming!

By the way, I’d like to offer heartfelt thanks for the reminder about Jane Austen’s birthday. Oh yea, and without this blog, how would I have ever remembered Unintended Pun’s big day? I wouldn’t have, plain and simple. I don’t keep good records. So, pies all around to you. Preferably custard-filled.

Now, here’s Amelia, our other *Muse* reader. She’s 12, as I said. And odd. —

Only if it gets even slightly out of hand. *un-stabs* I should probably leave at this point….

(136, 220) The blog is still exciting and mysterious to newcomers — more so than ever before, I’d say. Look at all that has happened: novels, wars, galactic exploration, bunny invasions, interminable RRR sagas, Kokonventions! Just imagine how awe-inspiring and confusing it must be for someone who discovers it for the first time.

If you old-timers are feeling nostalgic about the good old days when MuseBlog seemed fresh and new, you can recapture that feeling by watching (and helping) new MBers experience it for themselves.

(237, 238, 240) You’re right, RtH, in most instances, moderating itself is fast. The rest of it is timing. We work a lot of hours on the computer, one way or another, so we can usually check in frequently throughout the day. Inevitably the occasional blank spots occur when comments sit in the queue or even pile up, but that does not happen very often. In fact, I’d bet the majority of comments get posted shortly after they’re submitted. Though the time seems longer when yours is the one waiting (and yes, it felt that way to me, too, in my pre-GAPA days).

248 – Well, the blog still looks the same as it did when I last checked. I expect that as MuseBlog progresses, there will just be more and more MBers around. Some MBers are already almost adults (Grant O., the very first MBer, is now almost 18) so I think there will just be a wider spread of ages in the future. Old MBers will become adults, but will probably behave just like the newer generations because MuseBlog is a place where you can be insane. I don’t think any MBers will become GAPAs, though… if MBers could become GAPAs, there’d be this mad competition to impress the current ones so you’d be promoted, and I don’t think that would be fun.

And did I miss a chance to see how many posts I have? I am curious. It’s a lot, probably. I wonder if it’s over a thousand posts? It could even be over two thousand, I was addicted more severely at one point.

    Think about it this way:
    – A “newbie” is anybody who arrived a day after you did.
    – A MuseBlog demigod is anybody who arrived a day before you did.
Therefore, if you want to be a demigod, cultivate new MBers.

Museblog fame isn’t necessarily achieved by high post count or visibility on pointless threads. Look at MG.

Speaking of MG, by Robert’s definition I could call her a newbie. But somehow I don’t think I’m going to. Perhaps memory of this sort of thing dulls with age? I mean, I don’t consider PP or Glasseh or even Alice newbies. Possibly because I interact with them and have gotten to know them, possibly because now they know the Holy Museblog Ropes and I can snark at them properly, possibly because they don’t annoy me. It is hard to say.

I would wonder how many posts I had, but I switched emails and I know it’s a lot anyway.

I would also wonder how blog-famous I was, but the only responses I would get would be from people who’d heard of me.

    Hello! Hola! Bon-jour! Mishu-mishu! Dasvadana!

I salute you, people who read Muse, for Muse undoubtedly is one of the best magazines in existance, if not the best. I suppose you would call me a newbie, since this is my first post, but I have been looking at the blog for quite some time now. At first I didn’t think I would ever post here. I thought I could just sit and read the throughts and frolicks of fellow Musers and be content. But eventually I felt like added my own opinions to the bubbling pot.

I have had a subscription of Muse for about 1 year now (October 2006 was my first issue). I had already had a subscription to Oddysey for quite some time, and immensly enjoyed it. Then I got a subscription of Muse for my birthday (October 12)! I was immediately hooked because Muse had the same high-quality articles like Oddysey, but with an attitude! A comic strip inbetween the margins is one of the finest things a magazine can do to enrich it’s pulp.

    Other things about me:

    I am a strong Christian.

    I am 14 years old.

    My favorite food is sushi.

And last, but certainly not the least, and maybe the most, I LOVE NARNIA! I have read all 7 books at least 10 times each, and I totally enjoyed the 2005 movie “The Lion, The Witch, and The Wardrobe”, though I was dissapointed they left out one of the most memorable scenes in the book. I have been counting the days until “Prince Caspian” comes out on May 16, 2008 and I am overjoyed to say there are only 149 left! I checked to see if MuseBlog had any Narnia threads, but the only one in existance has apparently been barred from any new comments.

And, finally, I expect that you all are going to pie me, so I WILL PIE YOU FIRST!!! *splat* GOTCHA!!! *splat* *splat* *splattity-splat*

-I just tried to write out the complex formula but only ended up confusing myself-

265- Oh, but, Penty, you’re like one of the blog’s old ones. You and Axa and a few others have this aura about you. You grace us with your presence only sporadically, and when you do it is reason to take notice. It feels kind of weird, too familiar even, calling you Penty. I enjoy writing almost as much as reading, and I enjoy reading nonfiction as much as fiction. I especially like biographies. I like politics, and I generally try to keep up with both British and US politics. Hi, I’m new to the blog! I’m not new to the magazine, though – I started reading it when it first came out ten years ago. Now I’m 20 years old (an adult – sort of – the horror!) and living in Scotland.

I am seeking help on a quest for information… In one of the old issues I remember reading an article about unusual homes; I think one was a house with a mosaic courtyard, another had been covered in hand-carved animals, snakes, gargoyles, etc. Does anyone remember this article? I don’t even know which issue it was in, though reading through the archives on the fan site lead me to believe it may be the one titled “Dream houses” by Mary Roach in the Feb. 2001 issue.

If anyone knows anything about the houses in the article (ie, where they were located, what they were called if they had names, who owns them) I would be tremendously grateful. I already wrote to Muse but they couldn’t come up with anything. I hope I’m remembering this correctly, but I’m pretty sure it was in Muse – after all, what other mag would have such interesting articles :)

    Oh! Cold feet!

I’m afraid I couldn’t find it in the closest stack (although I did find two of the more recent Muses and a whole pile of Crickets), and I’m reluctant to venture deeper into the room. It could be in my basement still.

    Sorry.

Hello, Lilliputin! I have to dash and don’t have time to help you with your quest, but maybe other Musers can provide assistance.

We do have one house rule that you should be aware of: newcomers your age must blog under their own names, first and last, rather than under pseudonyms.

Good luck! I’ll comb through back issues later tonight if I get a chance.

348- I could go look that up for you now. I remember loving that issue too! (I’ve been subscribing since 1999) *has returned, Feb 01 Muse in hand* Let’s see, the first house was called ‘La Maison de Picassiette’ and was a house that was covered in pieces of pottery. The house is in France. Oh, apparently the photographs in the article come from a book called My Home, My Paradise by Gustau Gili Galfetti. Interesting. I might like to look at that. Anyways, the guy who made the house with mosaic started in 1938 and it took him 24 years to cover it. The next house was Salvador Dali’s house and called Casa Dali. It was as surreal as his paintings and it had enormous twin heads, a couch shaped like lips etc. It is in Spain. Next house. ooh! I liked this one. It is called Villa Principe and is on the island of Cavallo which is near Italy. It is a house built into natural rock formations. Vittorio Emanuelle (the exiled grandson of the last king of Italy) and his wife Mariana hired an architect to create a house that would not disturb the rocks. Many of the rooms are curved and some have rock formations built in being used as storage spaces. They began it in the late 1970s. The next house isn’t really a house, it was built to be a crypt for the guy who built it, Ferdinand Cheval. This is the house covered in carvings. It is called Le Palais Idéal. He found inspiration in 1879 when he came across a beautiful naturally shaped stone on one of his routes. The building is in France. Hope that helps! (Welcome to MB!)

You guys are amazing, thank you so much! My memory of that article is coming back to me now you’ve provided the details – Villa Principe was my favorite too! The others are fantastic as well, and I’ll definitely try to find the Galfetti book to see more creative spaces.

351 – you’re absolutely right – I never feel comfortable giving out my name or contact info on the internet in any form. Though I wish I could keep anonymous through a screen name, I respect the rules of the Muse board and I understand why they are in place.

Wow, I’ve been to Chartres but it was only for a short visit and obviously the main attraction is the Cathedral… I never realised la Maison Picassiette was also located there! Wish I could have seen it, but I may be able to some time in the future. I’m batting around ideas for my Anthropology dissertation right now and considering trying to do something with the anthropology of architecture, which brought this topic to mind. Thank you oxlin for kindly looking that up for me!!

Even if it wasn’t, I still don’t feel quite right knowing that people who I have no idea who they are can randomly come up to my front door and say “hi”.
