  1. Robert Coontz (Administrator) says:

Rebecca didn’t have time to write captions before she went to bed, but this was the initial rendezvous on the morning of SeptemberAugust 10. (I wasn’t there; from the bookstore, they trooped up to the building where I work.)

Note TwilightMidnight Fiddler’s amazing pie-shaped purse, with its visually punning “pied type” decorations. We’ll have to coax her into posting a pattern for it on the blog.

  2. Alice of the Blackberries says:

Who’s who? Julieb/Sobriquet has very curly hair. :) She looks absolutely nothing like I imagined her. In fact, so completely unlike I imagined her that it’s hard to believe. Very nice hair, though!
Midnight Fiddler, on the other hand, looks almost exactly like I imagined her.
But I really have no idea about anyone else. This is ridiculous. I’ve even seen pictures of Pan and THF, I should be able to tell them at least!

Glassboro has long hair, no? Is he the person in the far left of the second picture?

  3. Alice of the Blackberries says:

1- Twilight Fiddler? Has she changed her name?

  4. Robert Coontz (Administrator) says:

Oops. I must have been thinking about her and Twilight Rain at the same time — odd, because they’re very different people.

THF and Purple Panda are the ones inspecting the video camera.

  5. Alice of the Blackberries says:

4- Seriously? I could have guessed THF, but Pan looks like she’s eleven! *is utterly weirded out*

  6. Glassboro says:

I have long hair… Yes. It’s nice to see people again, I’d forgotten what they looked like.

That pie purse is amazing. I am in awe. I sorta wish I could have gone. One day, perhaps…

Hey Fiddler, how did you make that pie purse?

An anonymous thing wants to know.

  10. Purple Panda says:

5 (Alice) – Eleven? I’m *fifteen.* I guess I could pass as 12 or so, but 11’s even younger than THF! Oh well.

FIRST PICTURE: I’m the one with braided hair and Muse Academy shirt on the far left of the 1st picture. (The far right is Curious and Questioning, and the middle is Capricious)

SECOND PICTURE: Curly hair is Sobriqet, braded hair on the right is Midnight Fiddler (you can only see the bck of her head) Glassboro is at the far left (blondish long hair), then comes Red-tailed HAWK’s mom and dad, then him (wearing signatures shirt), then Rosanne, and Taiwan Hippo Fan sitting down.

THIRD PICTURE: Taiwan Hippo Fan on the left holding the video camera, Purple Panda (me) on the right.

FOURTH PICTURE: Sobriquet, C&Q, Cappy, Lady Visala of Reverie. (That’s in order, from left to right. Visala is on the far right).

FIFTH PICTURE: Shadowkat (wearing signature shirt)

SIXTH/SEVENTH PICTURE: Midnight Fiddler and her flamablamablous pie purse

EIGHTH PICTURE: (Sorry, I don’t know some of these people) From bottom to top: Shadowkat’s brother is wearing the blue shirt, 2 dads (sorry, I’m not sure who they belong to), THF wearing white shirt, Purple Panda and THF’s mom wearing white shirt and blue-ish pants, Sobriquet, Lady Visala, Glassboro, Capricious (wearing blue), Purple Panda, Midnight Fiddler (covering her face), Red-tailed HAWK, Rt-H’s parents, and random B&N people.

  11. Alice of the Blackberries says:

I’ve identified everyone but Shadowkat, c+q, and Lady Visala. And Capricious, but she just *might* be the girl in the blue shirt. But I really don’t know.

    Pie 0
    Squid 0
  12. Sobriquet says:

Oh god, I’m smiling really strangely. Oh well. Yes, I am the one with the curls. I’m also wearing a “Mostly Harmless” shirt and carrying a gigantic “Bo Knows” bag, but you can’t tell from these pictures.

Alice-That’s ok, I still picture you as the Disney Alice from Alice in Wonderland. I try not to, but I do anyway. Thank you. Shadowkat is the one in the fifth picture (on the right) by herself, wearing a signature shirt. Capricious, I believe (and I totally hope I don’t screw this up) is the one in blue, and c+q (again, sorry if I get this wrong) is on the far right of the first picture. Lady Visala is wearing the “Resistance is Museless” HPB shirt in the third picture. I’m petrified of mis-identifying anyone and am completely sorry if I have.

  13. Purple Panda says:

    1 (Robert) – I think you mean August 10th, not September 10th.

Thanks for putting up the pictures, they’re great!!

    Pie 0
    Squid 0
  14. Alice of the Blackberries says:

10- I KNOW you’re fifteen! You ACT fifteen! But the pictures make you look really young. Only these ones, oddly enough. In the other picture I saw of you, you looked the proper age.
But bear in mind, I’m really bad at guessing ages. Sometimes I can’t even tell a small grown-up from a kid!

My natural guesses proved to be correct, though Shadowkat gives me nearly as much of a shock as Julieb. I expected her to look different, somehow…

    Pie 0

  15. Robert Coontz (Administrator) says:

    (13) Yes, August. Washington is bearable in September. I’d probably better go to bed before I make any more mistakes.

    Rebecca posted these photos.

  16. Alice of the Blackberries says:

12- Seriously? I look like the Disney Alice? That’s really funny! *is trying very hard not to laugh* I don’t mind, though. I haven’t even seen that movie.

I think if I were to pick an Alice illustration that looked the most like me out of all I’d seen, it would be Arthur Rackham’s Alice. Though that might be wishful thinking.

Off topic? Maybe. Slightly more on topic: I can hardly wait until next summer.

    Pie 0
    Squid 0
  21. Purple Panda says:

I guess in pictures age is hard to tell – I don’t really see eleven, but I guess that’s because I know what I look like in pictures. *ponders*

  22. Vendaval says:

Wow, it’s so weird to see everyone’s pictures! I expected RTH to be “louder looking”. It’s funny to hear Purple Panda&THF’s voices in Musecasts now and be able to picture them talking, but i think I’ve seen pictures of them before. And I thought Julieb/Sobriquet had straight, brown hair! Perhaps she reminds me of a friend with the same name.:)

    Pie 0
    Squid 0
  23. Capricious The Great and Terrrible (cappy) says:

11- I’m the girl in the blue shirt and HPB hat with glasses, shorts and weird knees.

I’m in the middle and my arms are spread out strangely in the first picture.

If anyone watches Foster’s home for imaginary friends, the character on by shirt is Blooregard Q. Kazoo. :)

    Pie 0

  24. curious and questioning says:

I’m on the far right in the first picture, looking absolutely horrible (also slightly awkward), and I’m in the fourth picture down, in the middle, with my duct tape purse. That one’s OK-ish. I’m also just barely visible in the last picture, below Capricious (in blue, easy to spot) and above Glassboro. I think I’m reacting to something Capricious is saying, but it’s hard to tell. Which is basically what Purple Panda said (10). This brings back memories. :)

    Pie 0

  25. Midnight Fiddler says:

Hey all! I’m back for tonight only, then I have to endure 4 more days away from the computer, *sigh*

Anyway, thanks GAPAs for posting these!!!! Yeah, I look like an idiot in all thes pictures, ugh. It does bring back memories though. what a great time, I loved it, I’m still talking about it to anyone who’ll listen. (Not too many, by this point, mind you.)

I was so surprised when Glassboro had long hair, although for some reason I always pictured him with long hair. Bizzare.

23~ My knees are weirder, beleive me, I never wear shorts, precicely for that reason….

The pie shaped purse: As I’ve said before, I told my Mom what I wanted it to look like and she figured out how to do it.
It was made of felt, and the “filling” was just a round piece that I drew o with sharpies. The “crust” was a long wavy strip that we sewed to the filling, while tucking the woven stripes into it. Then we did the edges of the pan, sewing them to the crust and filling. Then sew the bottom of the pan to the edges of the pan. The opening was a cut into the bottom of the pan, and a gap in where the edges of the pan met.
    I hope this all makes sense, but the pics are pretty good, so you should be able to figure it out if you want to!! Robert said we should sell them on the Musery loves Company. [|}
Oh, and the design, in hand set type, if you drop a tray of letters it’s called “pie” since there is no other word horrible enough for it, thus the letters all over the “filling” of my pie. Semi abstract. :D

NO!!!!! NEVER!! I LOVE THE BOOKSTORE!
Actually, I don’t mind cameras, I just don’t like having my picture taken. I always look stupid, expecially when I’m wearing really unflattering 17th century clothes. Which, ironically, is when most people take my picture. Jamestown again.
I was mosly just being a brat when that picture was taken though.

  43. 'Dotty-kay says:

10: Yay, thanks for typing that out! I think you skipped c+q in the last picture… Oh, wait, she said that.

She looks different than in the math thread picture. Maybe because the hat covers her hair?

Very nice, everyone! I noticed that a lot of the girls who have purses have the kind with a long strap that you put over your head and one shoulder so the strap crosses over the front. I used to wear one like that, but the bag was bigger than I liked so I stopped using it every day.

    Pie 0
    Squid 0
  44. Margaret says:

37 ~ You look so nice in the picture of you with your pie, though.
I understand, though. I rarely look good in photos. Ugh.

    40-42 ~ What is Powell’s?

43 ~ I like bags like that, too. My school bag is a big stripy Lesportsac (birthday present ♥) which I wear like that. The only thing is that I wear it over my right shoulder, which is the one I’m in the process of destroying with the sousaphone, so now I’m afraid that I’ll have to wear it on the other shoulder, and small changes like that drive me insane. (Like if I don’t have my watch, I tend to be antsy.)

    Pie 0
    Squid 0
  45. Jadestone says:

I don’t carry a purse, but if I did, I’d probably use a bigger one with a shoulder strap.

It’d have to be big, because I’d fill it with all sorts of useful stuff. Like needle-nosed pliers.

  46. Sweet Melpomene says:

Here’s a slideshow of the DC Kokonvention Day One. If you mouse over the image, you’ll find controls in the lower right corner to move forward, back, or pause.

NOTE: There are 9 pictures total. The last one is the group around the piano reading copies of Muse. Depending on your connection, it may take some time for all of them to load. The slideshow will keep cycling through the ones it has already loaded.

There are a few quirks in Photobucket’s delivery system. If a given slide presents an error message saying the picture has been removed or deleted, click on it, and a window with the still photo should open.

GAH! We totally need to have the next Kokokon in Charleston. Then my parents might consider letting me go. I think the Musers would like Charleston. Beautiful city. Lots of history. When it’s not mid-summer and hot enough to be cooked on the asphalt if you lie there, it’s pretty nice weather. And you can ignore the ignorant redneck prats if you try hard enough.
We should have a debate about where to place the next location. One could present their argument as to why it should be held in that place, and so on and so forth. Is that a new thread I smell, possibly?

The first movie is taking a thousand years to load. Blah. But the second one was good, as were the slideshows. Yay! It looks like so much fun!

82- Washington, because I live there. Or Oregon, because I live there too. But Washington has lots of wonderfully fun things, like the Pike Place Market and the [snipped because I live to close to it]. Oregon has cool things too, like OMSI (Oregon Museum of Science and Industry). So yeah. Really those are the best places, especially if you consider the pristine, uncrowded landscape and the great historical merit. Yup. You really couldn’t have a better place for a kokonvention. And my dad’s even a kayak guide, so he could guide us in our lovely kayaks through the maze of blackberry-encrusted islands in our little portion of the countryside, while telling us enormously helpful things that we can then write down and publish in Muse.

There. If that wasn’t a convincing enough argument, then nothing will be. It would have been better if I had been able to do more than merely allude to the wonders of this region.

Fast-forward 20 five years into the future:

    “Who are those odd-looking people?”

“They call themselves Musers. They’re a sort of cult. Nobody knows very much about them. They seem harmless, mostly, but it’s hard to be sure.”

“What are those things they wear on their hands? Pincushions?”

“They call them ‘pies.’ They’re like little pillows. Whenever they meet, they tap each other on the nose with them. Sometimes when they’re embarrassed they’ll ‘pie’ themselves in the face.”

“Weird. What about those pink handkerchiefs sticking out of their pockets?”

“Those are their ‘towels’ — that’s what they call them. They never go anywhere without them. It’s from some holy book they’ve all read. Sometimes they’ll drape them over their hands and twist the ends up between their fingers to make bunny puppets.”

    “Bunnies? Now, that’s scary.”

“It’s true. I’ve seen them do it.”

“Wow. Musers, huh? It takes all kinds to make a world, I guess.”

    “You can say that again.”

89~ I love it!! Very good. My Dad is convinced that in 5 years I’ll be all, “Why did I think that was good? I can’t beleive I actually did that, what was I thinking?!” But I know better. In 5 years I’ll still know whay I am a muser. Because it’s a great kind of person to be!! (not that I’m great, or anything, but it’s a good group.)

Visala, those aren’t bad pictures of you! I like them.

My nose looks awful in the “who’s here” thing in the first video. I hate my nose. My voice sounds weird too. I’d better stop before tis becomes a rant…

  106. Robert Coontz (Administrator) says:

Okay, I couldn’t resist. Different year, different speakers:

“Sorry I’m late. I started watching the Kokonvention on holo and lost track of the time.”

    “What was it like?”

“It was AMAZING. Huge crowds as far as you could see, loudspeakers, speeches, pies everywhere — dry pies, real ones, what a mess! Total cathassus, simply unbelievable. Who ever would have thought, back in the old MuseBlog days, that what we started would be such a success?”

“Success? Is that what you call it?”

“What do you call it? Three hundred thousand people, they said — three hundred thousand! — all cheering and pieing themselves at the same time and singing ‘Have a Pie’ at the top of their lungs. Yeah, I think I’d call that a success.”

“You think so? Really? Is that what we were all about? People doing things all at the same time? Listening to other people give speeches? Conformity? No. It’s all wrong, all backwards. They don’t know what they’re doing. I’ve got a very, very bad feeling about all of this.”

    “But the Prophet said–”

“The Prophet! He’s part of the problem. Who is he, anyway? He came out of nowhere, talked the talk, seized control of the movement, made a fortune selling pies and towels and holding rallies. He’s not even a Muser — never went on the blog, admits he never even read the magazine. Didn’t need to, he says: He just groks it. Can you believe he actually said that? He ‘groks’ it!”

“Well, maybe you have a point. Maybe.”

“And then he had the nerve to say that knew all the Muses’ secrets, like whether Pwt was male or female, but that he wouldn’t reveal them because they were sacred mysteries. And poor old Larry Gonick came charging out of retirement to tell him off, but all his followers put their fingers in their ears so they couldn’t hear him and shouted Larry down and pied him to within an inch of his life. He was lucky they didn’t tear him to pieces. Success? Oh, yeah, I’d call that success, all right.”

“Okay, yes, what they did to Larry Gonick was unforgivable. But still– Are you sure what you’re feeling isn’t just, or mostly, well, sour grapes? I mean, you were there at the beginning. Generation Zero! People looked up to you. You had special status. And then this new guy comes along, talking about things that we never dreamed about and doing them, and all the old-time Musers wind up sidelined. It’s only natural that you’d resent that. I know I do. But we can’t let that color our judgment.”

“I can’t believe you. Do you think for one second that the GAPAs would have let any of this happen if they were still around? Would they be up there on the platform cuddling up to ‘Kokopelli’s Prophet’? Can you even imagine that?”

“But they’re not here, are they? They’re gone, vanished, pffft. The Prophet, whatever you think of him, is the only game in town. He’s even talking about reviving MuseBlog as a virtual-reality community on the Tesseract.”

    “So you’re with him?”

“It’s not a question of being with him or against him. You’re either with him or you’re nowhere. If you want to call yourself a Muser, that’s the only choice you’ve got.”

“The only choice… No. No, I won’t accept that. There must be something else we can do. There’s got to be another way…”

Right, one more: four voices this time.

ONE: “Islands! Don’t talk to me about islands. Sometimes I think we’re doomed to spend the rest of our lives on this blasted rock.”

TWO: “Not that long — just long enough. And it will all be worth it in the end. You’ll see.”

ONE: “Odd’s blood, woman, is there no end to your infernal self-assurance?”

THREE: “Silly boy. Surely you must know by now that she’s never wrong, and she always tells the truth.”

FOUR: “That pair of ineluctable facts is the source of our strength. Meanwhile, this rock is shaping up very nicely indeed. Oh, yes, a most agreeable rock.”

…which puts the story on track for MuseBlog fanfiction.

    (118) No, no, the “rock” is the new island off the coast of Iceland, where the GAPAs went to build Muse Academy after they vanished. The Prophet doesn’t know about it. Paul is just griping because he’s thirsty. I left out the next part of the conversation:

Paul: “It would be more agreeable if someone would build an alehouse on it. The nearest pub might as well be on Mars.”

Rosanne (brightly): “There will be pubs on Mars. Do you want me to tell you about them?”
