I’ve always wanted a thread like “The Anti Chatroom” thread, which was on MB before I got here. (https://musefanpage.com/blog/?p=86). I think it would be great, and I definitely think we should have another.

I thought the Anti-Chatroom was a good idea. It never quite worked the way it was supposed to, though, and nowadays the Incredible Morphing Chameleon Threads do pretty much the same thing. Still, GAPAs aim to please, and we’ll be happy to revive it if there’s a demand.

Has anyone here read John McPhee’s long article “Travels in Georgia”? It’s in at least two of his collections, available at most libraries, and should appeal to roadkill enthusiasts.

10-*pies back* sorry, I’ve been somewhat busier this year, and I’m spending more of my internet time socializing with CTYers and sometimes spellers. (Yes, I do love MB, but those are people that I actually know but will in many cases never see again, or at least not for another 168 or 189 days.)

How about a Latin thread? I just started learning Latin a couple months ago, but I love it and I’m sure plenty of other MBers study it as well.

    note to the GAPAs:
in 2006, a land called museica was founded on this blog. it has ended up with more lands over time. now Agagabagabag is slowly taking the plot, if you will, over.
I feel that this ruins the fun of the land, the mystery of not knowing what is coming up next.
maybe the rest of the Blog does not agree with me. but some might.
please GAPAs, give us a new land to call our own, a museblog only land, a land to be the made of the best ideas on the blog.
when you read this, a new pie war will have started.
that pie war is based on someone’s book about there museworld life.
if you would, let us start again, a clean slat.
    please.
the future of the blog depends on it.

How ’bout an ants vs. bees thred?
l’m fir bees, despite what Gary Havel says.
    1. The fight might be a guerilla fight, where the bees quickly drop down, allow ants to crawl over them, fly to great heights, and then do tricks to drop them. Advantage: Bees.
    2. Most bees live in social group, and therefore there could be an even fight.
    3. As l said in 1, bees might not have to sting the ants. Even if they did, the reason that bees can only sting larger animals once is because their stingers get caught in the flesh. With ants, their mass wouldn’t give much resistance when they pulled out.
    4. This one, Gary, only works if the bees lose, which they wouldn’t.

    (13) I think it would be fun to have 13 months of 28 days each (13 times 28 equals 364), plus one special “intercalary” (non-week) day (or two, in a leap year). That way, every month would be exactly four weeks long. If you started on a Sunday, then every month would have a Friday the 13th. It would be harder to translate from that calendar to the normal one, though.

Could we have a thread for crazy expressions like “erk” and how we use them and what they mean.

Could we do something where we’re collectively writing the diary of some preson, but we don’t plan anything about the person. They could be a historical figure or an ordinary teenager or an adult or a cow or a hot pink bunny. We’d just write entry after entry without consulting at all and see how the story went, with each person adding elements to the character.

    Squid 0
  220. Mrs. Green says:

220-Doing something about the weird corrolation between Paracelsus’ ideas and Valentine’s might be interesting. Tyco Brahe is the most scientific, I believe, which might be nice. It depends on what type of alchemy we want: occult or scientific…

    Pie 0

  221. Cat's Meow says:

    221 – Why not both?

    Pie 0
    Squid 0
  222. POSOC, who urges you to attend the Museican Constitutional Convention says:

222- Both, definitely! Valentine’s got an entire recipe for the Philosopher’s stone, but it has a lot of occult symbolism in it, so it’s really open to interpretation.

    Pie 0
    Squid 0
  223. Hypatia says:

222-The more the merrier! I agree. Although there are the constraints of people not having lived at the same time. But, we could think of some around that. After all, we’re all Musers!

    Pie 0
    Squid 0
  224. Hypatia says:

Another question to consider is, are we going to make it fantasy (mystical, occult) or historical. Fact alone, or a combination of legend and fact…

    Pie 0
    Squid 0
  226. Cat's Meow says:

225 – Well, as you said they don’t live at the same time. So it’s probably going to have at least a bit of legend/fact combonation.

I think it would be sweet to have the different approaches to alchemy racing to try to get the Philosopher’s Stone before the people on the other side do. Or something like that.

    Pie 0
    Squid 0
  227. Hypatia says:

227-That sounds excellent. Are we using Earth time? If we are, we could include the alchemists who didn’t fit in chronologically by incorporating visions of them…

    Pie 0
    Squid 0
  228. POSOC, who urges you to attend the Museican Constitutional Convention says:

227- There are several sides: say the “purists” who take a scientific approach and believe that science is the way forward; the “occultists” who think that science has no chance; and the “moderates” who hope to gain the Stone by using a combination of techniques. And of course they’re all using different recipes which are open to different interpretations.

    Pie 0
    Squid 0

    Jabir ibn Hyyan
    Al-Farabi

Roger Bacon (he’d be a good founder of the “scientific” branch)
Ramon Llull (love the name! He’s mainly occultist, and he was a contemporary of Roger Bacon, though younger, so he could have founded the other branch)
    Jean de Meung
    Pseudo-Geber (huh?)
    Gilles de Rais
    Bernard of Treves
    Johannes Trithemius
    Heinrich Cornelius Agrippa
    Paracelsus
Basil Valentine (look up his recipe for the Philosopher’s Stone: it’s ambiguous as an object, but it could be useful)
    George Ripley

    Johann Georg Faust
    Jan Baptist van Helmont
Tycho Brahe (we’ve just GOT to use him: he could have secretly performed an experiment on his false nose to allow him to smell again :) )
    Francois Hotman
    Michal Sedziwoj
    Arthur Dee
    Edward Dyer
Elias Ashmole (again, great name: the fellow was rather unscrupulous, so if we have him discover the Stone, we could make him the antagonist)

Here’s a bit of info on John Dee.
“He left Manchester in 1605 to return to London. By that time, Elizabeth was dead, and James I, unsympathetic to anything related to the supernatural, provided no help. Dee spent his final years in poverty at Mortlake, forced to sell off various of his possessions to support himself and his daughter, Katherine, who cared for him until the end. He died in Mortlake late in 1608 or early 1609 aged 82 (there are no extant records of the exact date as both the parish registers and Dee’s gravestone are missing).”
This gave me an idea for an opening scene in which Dee, on his deathbed, tells his daughter an important secret.

Let’s lay some ground rules for the use of magic in the Alchemy RRR. This is how I envision it. Suggestions? Changes? Questions? Criticism? Howls of rage?
First: Some magic is necessary- there is no way one could transmute base metals into gold under accepted natural laws. Having said that…
Second: In my opinion, this should definitely NOT involve Harry Potter-style magic. Semi-steampunk/alchemy/Stuart England, yes, but no sorcerers tossing multicolored fireballs at each other.
Third: Magic should be an entirely tedious process- simple cantrips often take a half-hour’s preparation. As a result of this, there is virtually no large-scale magic used, because the preparations might take several centuries, even if you could find the necessary materials.
Fourth: Scientific alchemists shouldn’t use magic at all, while most occult alchemists should direct it towards gaining knowledge, such as creating homunculi (or trying to), prophesying, clairvoyancy, and necromancy (for the reckless, desperate, or completely insane.) Which, of course, is all directed towards finding the recipe for the ever-elusive Philosopher’s Stone.

    Pie 0

277- Magic will usually require some sort of personal sacrifice, such as a drop of the magician’s blood for a minor working. More powerful magic requires things that could be either physical or mental; a lifelong dream, for instance.

That reminds me: I’m going to have to list the alchemists we might include. Here we go:
The year is 1660, and the English Restoration under Charles II is just beginning.
Elias Ashmole- currently 43 years old. He resides in London and is married to Lady Mary Mainwaring, although it is rumored that he married her for her estate rather than for any attraction. He is engaged in a catalogue of the Bodleian Library’s Roman coins, avidly pursuing alchemy and botany on the side. (A little bad news- his works were avidly studied by Isaac Newton later in life, which wouldn’t have happened if Newton and Ashmole were bitter enemies. Therefore, we have to either give up Newton as a main character or give up Ashmole as villain. I suppose we can just make him an unpleasant ally of… *researches* Well, well, he was something of a moderate.)
George Starkey- currently 32. He is a citizen of the New World, born in Bermuda, but he left the Americas ten years ago and now lives in London. He is vehemently on the side of the scientific alchemists and despises the occultists.
Hennig Brandt- currently 30. He lives in Hamburg and is affiliated with the scientific side, but he is scorned by his fellows as an amateur. Little do they know that in less than a decade, he will discover phosphorous.
Isaac Newton- currently 18. He has just been sent back to the King’s School at Grantham, thoroughly happy with his lot, and glad to get away from the home of his twice-widowed mother (who was attempting to make a farmer of him) to finish his education. He is a quiet fellow, with few friends, and enjoys devising mechanical contrivances. Though unmarried, he is engaged to Katherine Storer, step-daughter of William Clark, the apothecary with whom he lodged in his earlier years at the School.
Claude Duval- currently 17. Not really an alchemist. Get rid of him.
It looks as though Starkey, Ashmole and Newton are going to play major parts.

  288. (287) Yes, perhaps you should decide what to do about the Mystery RRR before starting anything new. Mysteries have more specialized requirements than some genres, and this one might benefit from starting again with the level of planning you’re doing for the Alchemy story. But I’d advise against rushing into a new RRR until some decision is made about the fate of the old one.

This is not to say the two can’t co-exist at some point. Right now the mystery has yet to catch momentum, however, and a starting a new RRR right now would put an end to it, I fear. At least that’s how it looks to me.

I am going to be honest here. The Mystery RRR is really not working. It doesn’t seem to have clicked properly with enough people to get really underway. I would help more, however, the only mystery stories I like are logical Sherlock Holmesian ones and this RRR seems to be gearing more towards the thriller end of the spectrum. You know what might be uber (double dots over the u)? A thread called something like, Book Life. It would be an RPPG-ish adventure through the pages of a book that most people had read (if we couldn’t settle on one, we could combine two). We’d take part in adventures, hold conversations with the characters… AND We’d minimize (or eliminate completely) spoilers.

We should make a math thread. You know, a place for people to post hard homework problems or post nearly impossible problems to try and stump the rest of the MBers. The Space thread is trying to accommodate math as well, and it’s annoying. Also, is there a Quotes thread?

can we have a pointless post thread? You know, for the people who feel like saying something that does not fall under any of the threads up?
Or could we have a thread were you try to visualize life in a different perspective, or try and visualize life from another persons/things view? Example, you see a bunny chewing on your rosebushes and you scare it away. Life in the bunnies point of veiw (if it were intelligent):
The gardens of these giant bunny scarers are delicious. It’s just so hard to try and get at those succulent flowers. ! the coast is clear! Here is my chance to get dinner! *run and nibble on a rosebush* mmmm, the first time I had roses since 4 months ago! YUM! Oh no, here it comes. It has a big stick! Oh I have to run! No where to hide! Oh, help! *runs off as person yells at it adn throws stick at it* that was close! I think I twisted my ankle while dodging that stick.
I know, it’s not the best example. And don’t feel sorry for bunnies. I just made that up. Bunnies who look fat, don’t take mercy. Ones who are starving, leave carrots instead of letting them eat your plants!
But the best thing would be to make another Random Factoid thread!
