Great. Now that we’ve continued, nobody will see my idea, and I won’t get any more support. Pity.

I guess I got a first post. But if I say I got a first post here, and nothing else, the GAPAs will zap this post. I’ve got to think of a point besides glorifying my speedy thread-finding ability. WHAT TO POST?
    Ah. I’ve got it.
Have we ever had a Monty Python thread?

One minute after PC posted you posted with a link to something you said happened loong ago. (I didn’t click on it yet! But I will!)

How did you find it so fast? Is there some cool searching window for old posts in the moderating window? Or is this just another case of the Power of the GAPAs? Whoa. *bows*

  9. 2,3-dimethylPENTane says:

5 (DoJ)- I think an LGBT thread would end up being either exclusive or pointless–either the blog’s few LGBTs would spend several hundred posts talking about their LGBT-ness or those of us who are either straight or too young to tell would spend several hundred posts on “lol I KNO A GAY KID I R SPESHUL n not prejudised (sp?)” and that would be lame.

I myself am kind of morbidly curious about a MuseblogSecret thread, similar to PostSecret or an LJ secret community. The basic premise is as such: Bloggers post anonymous secrets like so:

    1. Anonymous Coward | October 42nd, 2007 at 27:63 pm

I hate 2,3-dimethlyPENTane or whatever she’s calling herself these days. She is so horrible but I cannot tell her this to her face because I will be blinded by the light of her awesome.

    Ph33r teh contradiction.

    lol furst post0rz

And then braver bloggers reply with real names. Iunno, there are several kinks that must first be worked out, but if we can keep it somewhat civil I think it could be good fun! 8D -sparkles-

    (9) – It sounds cool, but I think that idea could lead to trouble. First of all, the GAPAs would know who you were, and also, it could lead to a bit of turmoil on the blog, especially if people were talking about other MuseBloggers.

    (9, 11) A thread about super-secret secrets sounds like a moderator’s nightmare.
    (7, 13) So does a thread about 1337.
Ergo, the GAPAs can muster no enthusiasm for either.

(5, 12) As for an LGBT thread, I think that topic is hot enough to belong on the Hot Topics thread.

We’ll create some of the other threads after we recover from the effort of making the October monthly threads. As always, we’re happy to hear new ideas.

And if you really like me, you can post the graph that I posted on it that no one read:

I like Penty’s idea of a MB secret thread. GAPAs, wouldn’t you only have to edit out swearing and contact info? and maybe if MBers felt comfortable they would just let the GAPAs in on the secret? though that does sort of defeat the purpose…

(34, 35) If you don’t want to wait for the long What’s Here download, you have other options for browsing old threads.

On the main page, below Recent Comments, click on any of the subjects under Categories. The resulting page also has a useful Posts by Month sidebar (posts=threads).

You could also type “threads” in the orange search box at the top right of any page. This will bring up, among other things, all the back issues of Don’t Forget These Threads (and its antecedents).

Or type a random interest in the search box and see what pops up.

Hi. Sorry if I seem to be a little frazzled. Incident with a computer virus.
    Name and description?
    Name: Muse Legendarium
Description: A world-building venture in the tradition of J. R. R. Tolkien and Larry Gonick. It is somewhat like an RRR, only with the tone of a scholarly text or a complete encyclopedia of this world.
A note. While this is craziness, it is strictly nonrandom. If the first few posts set the tone for seriousness, do not attempt to make it silly. Conversely, if it is more in the comic vein, do not inject ill-suited seriousness. A universe of HPBs and pie throwing should not be intruded on by people with cosmic quests and pointy ears, or vice versa.
Another note: this is more like RRRiting an encyclopedic text than playing an RPG. Unlike the Musiverse threads, MBers have no participation in it as pwners, sea captains, prime musers or otherwise. And unlike most RRRs, as far as we’re using the Tolkien analogy, it’s more like the Silmarillion than LOTR and Hobbit, providing backstory instead of an actual story.

  78. The Raven of the Hawk says:

76- I went back and found the very first MBer Religions thread. It seems to be a nice, respectful discussion of what religions different MBers are, and the beliefs of those various religions. Nor were there flame wars arising on the second MBers Religion thread. The third Religion thread, 2007.1, is where the trouble started(post 15 and all the responses to that, basically(oh and I was apparently wrong about it all being FS who was at fault)). MB got through two threads without having flame wars. Can we have one more chance?

  81. Rebecca Lasley (Administrator) says:

    (79) Here’s the thing about the power of zappage. We don’t like to exercise it.

For a start, it’s not pleasant to censor. We’d much prefer bloggers to express what’s on their minds. In almost every problematic case a little extra thought is all it takes to do so in a non-inflammatory manner.

Furthermore, zapping is not a simple call in any but the most blatant cases. It takes time to deliberate, to consult with other GAPAs if need be, to edit when necessary.

In extreme cases, such deliberations disrupt the thread for which the post is intended, as it may be left hanging for some time while other comments appear on the blog as usual. Then if it eventually is allowed in some form or other, subsequent references to numbered comments are thrown out of sequence.

    </sigh>

I had an idea for a long-term blog project. I can’t do it on my own, since I need some bloggers who have been around since Welcome, Musers, in addition to the help of a few Administrators. Anyhow, here it is:
Musers join together and determine different “ages” of the blog. Golden Age, Dark Ages (hopefully none of those), Transition Era (no idea when that would be, I’m just making up examples). An era would last from a certain thread’s creation date to another thread’s creation date.
This would organize the blog with the added benefits of giving us the air of stuffy scholars (“Well, as I recall, it was back in the Tenrec Era when…) and allowing us to determine more clearly when we arrived on the blog (“I first appeared near the end of the Snark Era…”).

I feel rather silly for asking for this, since we already have a similar thread, but could we possibly have a Muser Role-play thread? Not Muse RPG, sort of more similar to Muse Fanfiction, where the bloggers meet up and…do stuff. Yes.

I was thinking we could set it at Muse Academy–the OEADs could assemble a crack blogger force to go out and investigate strange happenings, while other students uncovered mysterious doings at the Academy. Or something.

Once we are done with November and the chaos it entails (i. e. NaNoWriMo), we ought to get a new RRR. With two rules:

    Pie 0
    Squid 0

  150. Prarilius Canix, taking a break from NaNoWriMo says:

149- Kind of lost me with that analogy. Are you saying that an RRR without those would be no fun? Or that MBers are like stubborn kids who refuse to put their literary “toys” away?
In either case, I’ve noticed that the two sci-fi RRRs we had both had space travel, and the innumerable fantasy RRRs all had magic. I think it’s time to pull a Monty Python and say “And now for something completely different.” I think that the writers on the blog (including me) might enjoy a challenge.

    Pie 0
    Squid 0
  151. Rebecca Lasley (Administrator) says:

    (150) No, I think your idea is a good one. My analogy probably went astray on account of my having just finished cranking out the second fastest 1828 words of my life.

My thought was more along the lines that MBers spend so much time outside of the boxes as other people see them, that being inside the box might be like being outside the box for anyone else ….

You know my idea about dividing the blog into eras? I’ve figured out a way to make it more manageable. Each person who decides to help volunteers to read through ten or more threads thoroughly in chronological order and post their findings on the thread. Then, when a large database is assembled, with a few essential facts about each and every thread, we can begin dividing them up into eras.

    Pie 0
    Squid 0
  157. Purple Panda says:

156 (Prarilius Canix) – Yeah, I really liked that idea! I’ll definitely help. Last year I read through all of the old threads (before I came in March 2006) and the entire GABOOMBA, but I don’t remember a whole lot. But I can do that, and work on the no magic/space travel instead of NaNo next month!

It might be a bit more tedious to report the findings on taht actual thread, though. Perhaps each person could read a certain amount of threads and put their findings on a Word document or something, then we could all paste our documents into a post so we could see them all together? That might make it a little bit easier.

200- Not necessarily. It could be alternate history, post-apocalyptic dystopia, fantastic world without magic… the possibilities are endless.
I’d enjoy doing alternate history, but that would require much more organization than is common in RRRs. We’d have to settle on a point of divergence and develop it from there.

201- Alternate history would be fun.

I sort of wonder how many RRRs will return to life after November. Several have failed, and I’m going to ruin my reputation of a person who keeps them alive at all costs and say that I don’t really mind.

    Living RRRs:
    The Sea Roc

    Hopefully soon to live RRRs:
    Dreamland
Fractured Fairy Tale (I spent a long time on that one. I don’t really want it to die.)

    Semi-living RRRs:
    Spirits and Blood
    Role-playing Writing
    Terenika
Time Travel (God this one is a mess. Maybe with some serious editing, some dedication, and a total plot twist, it’ll inspire me, but not before.)

    Dead RRRs:
    School

    Finished RRRs:
    Terraformed

And if you ask my personal opinion, there are two categories:

    RRRs that I care about:
    The Sea Roc
    Terenika
    Dreamland
    Fractured Fairy Tale
    Role-playing writing
    Terraformed (the publication of)

RRRs that I don’t care and may or may not feel obligated to stick with:
    Spirits and Blood
    Time Travel
    School

I should probably just drop the entire second category and make myself much, much, happier.

Sorry, off topic. I like alternate history.

  214. Prarilius Canix, taking a break from NaNoWriMo says:

213- AH determines the setting, not the story. You figure out a turning point (let’s say, for the sake of the argument, the Battle of Tours between the Moors and Franks), send it a different way than what actually happened (Moors win instead of Franks who actually did), and figure out likely political and cultural consequences (Islam much more prevalent in Europe, Caliphate of Cordoba spreads across France and possibly farther.) Then it becomes more in the realm of fiction. After the easily predictable consequences are exhausted, you can make up new developments (fleeing Frankish nobles cross English Channel, establish a state in Southern Britain) as long as they’re possible. (I apologize for any gross historical inaccuracies, this is just for example purposes.)
Then, once you have the setting figured out (for RRR purposes, I think it ought to be done in the form of a prologue, so that we all have it down at the beginning), you can begin making up the story, which can be set in any time after the turning point, from five seconds after the divergence to the year 3000 AD. (Though, since this RRR bans space travel, I don’t think we should set it too far ahead.)
Whew, that was a long post. With lots of parentheses (seven.)(No, wait, eight.)(Wait, now it’s nine.)(Ten.)(11.)(I’m changing to numerals for the sake of brevity.)(That brings us up to 13.)(14.) ….. ( ∞ )
Took a long time to type that. But now I hold the definite record for most parentheses in a post.

220- You don’t have to, but it’s helpful to figure out the turning point and subsequent events up to the time you set your story in, and I was thinking that since this is a group project, we should RR’Rite the alternate timeline as well as the story. That could be incorporated as a prologue, or it could not be considered part of the story at all, just the equivalent of an author’s notes.

If we do a Christianity thread, why not a thread on Islam, Judaism, or one of the many other religions out there? If the Christians want a place to discuss their faith, then there are many websites devoted to that. I think non-Christians (obviously I do not speak for all of us) will either ignore it, or post and it will end up as a flame war.

I like Huston Smith’s book because he tries to show the best parts of each religion and to describe it from the inside out — that is, explain how its devotees experience it and what it means to them. Some of the chapters get a little abstract, but most of them repay the extra effort it takes to read them. We had some good discussions based on it back in 2006:
