    I’ll start with another Muse Academy vignette:

    :cool: Hello, ∀ . ∃ anything new and wonderful going on?
    :smile: :grin: :? :idea: :mrgreen: *confusion*
    :? What are you talking about?
    :cool: In logic, “∀” is a symbol that means “for all” of something. I often use it as shorthand for “all” or “everybody.” Similarly, “∃” means “there exists” — or, more conversationally, there is or there are.
    :grin: But why are those things ∃ing here?
    :cool: ∵ they’re useful and I wanted you to know about them.
    :? Let me guess. “∵” means “because,” right?
    :cool: Exactly. It’s an upside-down cousin of the more-common symbol “∴”, which means “therefore.”
    :smile: Actually, that’s pretty cool.
    :mrgreen: I think they’re dumb, and I’ll bet you never really use them for anything.
    :cool: (you think that) ⇒ (you’re wrong). I ∞ use them for taking notes.
    :grin: Hold on. Is “∞” supposed to mean “always”? I don’t think you can do that.

      That’s lovely! I don’t know ∀ the symbols you didn’t define, though. ∴, I don’t know that I can participate much. Then again, I was able to say that much; ∴, I can try to say some more! Also, I can guess some of them. That helps. Just don’t blame me if I get a few wrong.
      You know, I think I’ll just ask you about ∀ I don’t understand. First, though, are we allowed to talk to the anonymous Muse Academy Student characters? I want to tell :D that I think en’s incorrect in saying, “But why are those things ∃ing here?” (∃ means “there is/are/exists/exist”) ⇒ (∃ing means “there being/existing”) ⇒ (“∃ing here” means “there being/existing here” ), which makes no sense ∵ nothing can ∃ and here exist at once. ∴, what en said made no sense and ∴ was not correct, ∵ ∀ that is correct makes sense, unless ∃ a deficiency in data, but (∃ not enough data) ⇒ (∃ no reliable method of discerning the truth, anyway). That’s why logic is the best method for finding the truth; (∃ enough data) ⇒ (it gives you the correct answer), and (∃ not enough data) ⇒ (there is no reliable method for finding the correct answer); ∴ ∃ never a better method for finding the truth, and (∃ not enough data) ⇒ (it is often impossible to realize this), and (one does realize this) ⇒ (one knows ∃ no further logical inferences); also, ∃ more cases in which ∃ sufficient data to make a logical inference than cases in which it seems ∃ but ∃ actually not; ∴, (it seems ∃ enough evidence to form a conclusion based on logic) ⇒ (going ahead gives you more true answers than false ones). I’d also like to point out to :idea: that (he feels like abbreviating “because”) ⇒ (he’s going to do it whether he wants to or not). ∴, the bit about him needing to abbreviate it can be taken out.∴, it becomes {moments of his life when he is taking notes and feels like abbreviating “because”}. That’s not accurate, though; it ought to be {moments of his life when he is taking notes, feels like abbreviating “because” and will stop neither feeling like abbreviating “because” nor being able to abbreviate “because” before he has the chance to abbreviate “because”}.
      Anyway, Robert, what do “x|x”, “∈”, and “Δ” mean in logic? What about brackets like these: {}?

        x|x and ∈ and {} are part of this phrase:
        (∀x|x∈{moments of your life}, you write “∞” as an abbreviation for “always”)
        which is read: for all x, x being an element of the set of moments of your life, you write ∞ as an abbreviation for always

        the triangle is a lowercase delta, used often to mean “change”

          Slight correction: it’s upper-case delta, used in mathematics to mean “difference” or “change.”

          I studied math, logic, set theory, and philosophy of mathematics, and over the years found myself adapting the notation to my own purposes until some of it strayed pretty far from absolute rigor (as Bibliophile noticed). For example, instead of “do we have any chocolate?” (e.g., in the refrigerator), I’d write “chocolate: ∃?” That amused me and inspired the SSSS.

    :???: – I mean, I’ve missed my family a ton and I’m going to go see those friends who didn’t come to Israel for the gap year. I’m not particularly upset that school is over and I will be seeing most of the girls in college next year, but I’m going to be leaving Israel in 10 hours!

        Me, too. I really don’t know how that happened.

        Although, you know, now I think about it, while it is rather left field, it isn’t that far, given Dumbledore’s descriptions of people “wasting away” or being driven mad in front of it. It might not literally devour them, but it certainly plays havoc with their sanity. It could well have been crafted with intentionally negative intent, perhaps as a trap of some description. Or just because whoever made it was a sadist who liked to screw with people’s minds.

        …It’s absurd, but I find that I really like this idea.
