National Emoticon Appreciation Month

Our first Random Thread of 2009 kicks off our Year of Random Celebrations with a salute to that stalwart factotum, the emoticon. They signal our moods, speak for us when words don’t do, provide work for Smiley Gnomes, and illuminate stupid senseless stories that would otherwise be simply stupid senseless text stories.

(Users’ Manual: Obey The Rules. Consult The Guide. Have fun!)

I just rang in the new year (21 minutes ago) by banging on pots and pans downtown. Now I’m all hyper and excited and sort of want to stay up FOREVER and scream and shout and sort of want to sleep, which I can’t do until I’ve cleaned my room. Meh.

  8. (4) I wondered if anyone would spot the location. It’s the Greek sculpture hall at the Louvre. The foreground emoticon replaced the Venus de Milo.

The left side of the hall was created with a flipped image of the right because at first I thought removing the statuary was going to be a more time-consuming job than it actually turned out to be once I figured out an easier way to do it. I should have fixed the join in the floor, tweaked the shadows, and a few other details, but after losing two hours’ worth of work to a Photoshop crash (a rare event), I let a lot of details slide.

By the way, all marble not original to the Louvre was created digitally. It always amazes me to see what light and shadow can do.

31- JEALOUS! Have fun on the boat!

Speaking of boats, I’m going to do some sort of fundraiser/sponsorship in order to raise $600 for the Adventuress sail. (Why is it so darn expensive?) I may send letters to various people asking them to sponsor me, or we may do an art show where the proceeds go to the trip. In any case, I think I’m going to email the Adventuress people and ask if we really get to learn how to sail, like, go up in the rigging and reef the sails in the middle of a typhoon. Or even do that minus the typhoon.

    Things I have been wondering:
Would it really be possible for a girl to disguise herself as a boy, like in all the stories? They tried in the Twelfth Night movie and it was really unconvincing. When I get my hair cut, I’m going to try, even though it’ll still be longer than a boy’s.

39-It’s possible. People mistake me for a boy all the time, and I have noticeable breasts. All you need is a short haircut and boys’ clothes. Unless you have an unusually ‘girly’ build, in which case it might be harder.

39~ I’m not really sure about the Adventuress. One thing that I’m going to say here is that you most likely will not be going aloft if you go on a “sail cruse.” The reason being is that a tall ship is already a dangerous place to be, but going aloft is incredibly dangerous, and organizations that own tall ships and sail them for the public have to have themselves entirely covered and then some as far as legal procedures go. When I went on board the Zodiac my parents had to sign a paper that said basically “if my child gets hurt or killed while on our sips you can’t sue us because this paper says so.” (the Adventuress actually used to be run by the same people, so I feel pretty confident in saying that the programs are probably comparable.)
More on my experience on the Zodiac, we were all assigned daily tasks, like wiping counters in the galley, polishing brass or soaking the deck in the morning, and we all had a “sailing station” that we were assigned to to assist with the sailing. For example, I was assigned to the starboard jib sheet, which meant that every time we came about I had to be standing at my line ready to haul or ease depending on the tack we were sailing on or changing to, and in the evening I had to help furl it (got to go out on the bowsprit to do so, but that’s not really the same as going aloft). In a situation like that you certainly learn some, but it’s hard because every time the action is taking place you have to do the same thing, and that doesn’t prepare you for actually working on a ship as a real sailor, you’ll learn things you certainly need to know, but you really need to be able to work all stations and understand the complete rig, not just one or two lines that directly involve yor station.
I think that if you really want to learn to sail for real the best thing to do would be to contact different organizations and ask what sort of requirements they have for their crew members. Ask if you can volunteer or even help out ship maintenance in port, that could be a god way to familiarize yourself with the rig and learn your way around a ship before you even go sailing. On the Adventuress there’s the ships’ apprentice program, but that’s for people who’ve gone through their sail cruises already. Humph. Maybe see if they can make an exception, and that you have a good bit of book learning and are serious about sailing and want to actively learn as much as you possibly can about the workings of the ship. They may just decide that that’s possible.
The American Sail Training Association also has internships in the summer, I don’t know very much about them but you may check it out, that could be a good way to get on a crew and be able to learn sailing. I’d definitely look that up.
I’m looking too, but for me mostly on the East Coast. However, I’ll let you know as soon as I find something that kooks like it’ll work!

Oh, dressing as a boy….yes, it’s possible. I used to be mistaken for a boy all the time, and my mom was still being called a boy when she was 18.
If I had short hair, a hat and loose boyish clothes I could probably look like a guy. I look slightly boyish when part my hair way to the side, and in certain clothes that hide my shape I think I look rather boyish.
I’m planning on getting a short haircut in the summer, so we’ll see how that goes….

48-Thanks. It is fun, though you have to realize that it’s not a vacation. We have no refrigerator, no electric lights, no internet, no phone, no washing machine, no shower, we wear all clothes until they’re too stiff to put on anymore, the quality of some of the water we drink is questionable at best, and we have spells of having basically nothing to eat but cabbage and fish jerky for weeks. It’s… interesting. And, yes, fun. I mean, we’re in the Bahamas.
As for the sunscreen, yes, we will bring some. We’ll have to put it on on the plane, since just standing around on the docks for half an hour to wait for someone to take us to the boat is enough to give you a sunburn. :D

  49. Vendaval says:

39- If you want to learn to sail, I highly suggest taking a sailing program on small boats, at a local community center, sailing club, or by even asking a neighbor. I know you want to sail big boats, but understanding how a boat works (not just how to work it) is essential to operating one knowingly. MF knows more than me about tall ships, so I would follow her advice, and I agree that you shouldn’t be too hopeful about learning tons on a short cruise. But trust me, dinghys are fun, and you’ll be able to see what the big boat is doing much easier.

47- Goodbye! Have fun! We’ll all miss you.

50~ Even better! Wait, if no phone is an issue, can’t you get a cell phone or one of those track phones that has prepaid minutes? Are you going to be getting off the boat ever? There’s such a thing as laundrymats to wash your clothes! Electric lights are overrated, fridges are nice but not needed and internet can be found at libraries to make us all die of jealously at your incredibly awesome lifestyle. ;) Have fun, beware of pirates and do tell all when you come home!
By the way, what sort of boat are you on?

    Pie 0
    Squid 0
  51. Armada says:

52-No, there’s no cell phone coverage in the Bahamas. I do know there are laundromats, we use them whenever we can, but not all islands have them. A library with internet is something I have not yet seen in the Bahamas. There may be some in Nassau, but not where we are. Most libraries are hundred-year-old, one room shacks with books from thirty years ago or books that have been donated by cruisers. But there is an ‘internet shack’ in the first place I’m going, anyway, so I may be able to check in now and again, in the first few weeks anyway. The boat is a trimaran, which is nice because there’s more room.
    So, yeah! ;)

39- There is someone at college who has a really feminine body type (her face is rather masculine though) and when she binds herself, ties her hair back in a low ponytail and walks in a different way she makes a convincing man. There is a lot of character in stance and mannerisms. Apparently I can do an okay man-walk myself according to people on my floor. I didn’t really work all that hard on it though, I walk like a less old version of Zorka, a character I played once. (he was a crazy old man who played the violin basically).

45- I know, I know, we won’t really get to do much. But you have to understand that there’s nothing here, as far as I know. The Lady Washington and the Hawaiian Chieftain, the Zodiac, and the Adventuress. At least if I do the sail cruise I’ll have an opportunity to do the sail training
Here’s my plan. I’ll get my parents to write a special letter saying that I climb the rigging and learn to sail and everything and they promise not to sue anybody, and then I’ll pester the people in charge continuously. It might work. And then I can do the sail training, which is what I really want.

51- I know how to sail, at least as much as two years of sailing camp taught me (and I’m going to try to take it again this year, but my spring break might not coincide with the sailing camp). The problem is, we live on a river and it’s really dangerous to try to sail a small boat here. I wouldn’t mind, but I don’t think my parents would let me. That’s what’s kept me from sailing the little racing boat out in the yard.

How weird it feels, one get’s used to being away from home and visiting with people that you don’t always see when one is away for a few weeks. Odd.
Let’s review, I was in WI visiting my grandparents over Christmas, got home, spent the night, did laundry and left the next day to visit a friend on the Eastern Shore (MD) for awhile, and I just got back again. 74~ I suncerely wish you luck, but I’m not entirely sure that your plan will succeed, since most regulations I’ve seen as far as going aloft require training, signing of papers, and the scary sounding “physical test” that is different from ship to ship. The Kalmar Nyckel makes you do three pull-ups. Jamestown Settlement basically juist sends you aloft with a crew member to tell you what to do. Others may be more strick or lax, I have no idea. I’m just a little sceptical that as a member of a sail cruse you’ll be able to cajole them into allowing you aloft. But who knows? Practive your begging face and be persistent.
If you seem to know a good bit about the working of ships and rigging before you start perstering them they may be a little more inclined to let you have your way, so start reading and ask questions when you have any.

Hi again, everyone. I realize that checking in again is rather anticlimatic after all this, but I couldn’t stay away. Fiddler– I meant to say atabaque, though an agogo is another capoeira instrument. An atabaque is a drum, a big upright one. In case you’re wondering, a pandeiro is a tambourine. A berimbau…. well, Google it. It’s hard to explain.

The weather was actualy good, which is an odd thing, for Whare Flat, which is a feild(or group of, with native bush around) in the middle of nowhere and here was held the music festival (of Whare Flat). There is a swimming hole that is so FREEZING, I never went above my waist, besides, there was didymo everywhere. On the last day I sat with Steph, Jasmine, Marco, and we were occasionally visited by guys in their mid-twenties-Daniel, Migal, Patrick, Angus, Sam, and we played “Mao” all day! Do any of you guys know it? it is the most crazy/random card game!
the rules are basically last card BUT when you play 9 of diamonds you have to say “thats the badger”, when you play a 7 you have to say “have a nice day” or “have a very nice day” depending how many 7’s are put down, and the next person must pick up a penalty card, Jacks change suit. Oh, and it’s silent so if you want to talk you must say “point of order” and then “end point of order” and you cannot look at your cards during a P of O. Now, here is the crazy bit, this game never finishes, you never win, if you get out you can come back in whenever you like and you can make up a rule, which you dont tell anyone else but penalise them for failure to do that rule (so they work it out after time) . it was a crazy crazy game!
    Woah. Heavy rain.

An essay in History that we didn’t get to do because there was a week of snow-related school closures, Math homework (I’ve already finished the project so the homework should be easy), and possibly an English commentary! *rants* I HATE commentaries, mostly because you have to nitpick at some short thing like a sentence or a stanza. I HATE analyzing, let alone nitpicking. We should leave literature to the people who actually want to do that sort of thing.
I guess I was wrong on the I hate analyzing thing. I like to think about the book a little to see what it was trying to tell me. I feel as if I got a complete read when I do that. But I HATE writing things about books! We should just have to tell the teacher what we thought and then get an A. End of story.

I feel so joyous because….I STILL HAVE 4 WEEKS OF VACATION!! wait…only 4? uh-oh… also I have a school related question: in the US summer holidays are in September right? does that mean that at the beginning of those holidays you stop being grade 1 and move to grade 2…or do you randomly have a really long holiday in the middle of the year and begin a new grade (like us) in the new year?
I just went to see Bolt with my mum and dad…I feel so young! it was cute though! especiallybecause Bolt looks like Nessie! (well…ideally)
For Duke of Edinborough (do you have that in USA?) I have to do some volunteer work, this time some of my friends were volunteering in an elderly care home…so I decided to try do the same with a rest home near me..I’m kind of nervous because…(if the people say yes) it will be depressing! so many old people waiting to die >< and my mum used to work nights at a rest home when she first got back from Africa (she got back 6 months after me & dad) and she came home smelling funny…aaaaaahhhhh!!!!
Well…good bye and I am exceedingly jealous of you kokoners…

154- The new year has nothing to do with new grades for us. We usually have breaks from around end of May/start of June to end of Augut/begining of September, depending on your school. Each time we come back after summer break, we begin a new school year/grade. So class’s are like, class of 06-07, 07-08, ect.

*wonders if that made any sense*

So, first day back at school, hmm. We had our last day of finals today, as the day they were supposed to be on ended up being a snow day merging into winter break. But I only had a study hall (aka I didn’t have to go in and could get up late), and then 75 minutes of band :D
Then I went to the coffee shop with my two friends, then we walked to the library to drop one o them of for work, and then me and the other walked home. It was fun. Though now I have to do eons of history… uhg. Should have done more over break. Should have done any of it over break >.< Alas…

Student writers will get to “rough it” for a week, help sail a tall ship, write together, read and discuss great literature of the sea, explore the coves and beaches between Newport and Martha’s Vineyard[…]

The roads are mostly melted now, or salted maybe, but all the leaves and branches look like they are coated in glass… I want to take some photos before it all melts…

    It’s raining now…

221 – Actually, what made me madder was the district that wasn’t going to be closed today. From what I heard, two elementary schools got evacuated because of the snow on the roofs, there was water dripping from the ceilings at some of the middle school’s and high schools, one of the high schools had some parts of its roof with so much snow that people inside could see the beams bending, and they were still prepared to have school today!

Luckily, at about 5 this morning they decided they were going to change their minds and close, but it seems a little ridiculous that they would even consider opening with all of that going on.

228 – Haha, I don’t mind. I love my school so much, and one more day before leaving is a nice day indeed.

You know, with all these snow days everybody is going to forget that my school had two of those days off anyways. Drat it.

Well! We didn’t lose power. We lost a few tree limbs, though. Including a rather large pine limb, which appears to have taken down other limb(s) with it. The temperature barely climbed to 35º F, and it was usually hovering at 32º F, so things haven’t melted as much as they could have. It rained much of the day, but thankfully there wasn’t much more freezing. Actually, a couple of minutes ago a gust of wind apparently came through, as the house was bombarded by bits of ice from all sides, resulting in a most unusual sound, indeed!

How are you all? It looks like Northwestern MBers are buried in snow.

Although I have long-ish hair, people say I’m boyish because of my walk/mannerisms/clothes/etc. (I also always wear my hair in a low ponytail, which probably helps. Some of my friends say they would definitely think I was a boy if I had shorter hair, too.)

Hawk/Fiddler/Robert/Rebecca (129): It sounds like you were having a great time!

Alice (151): I definitely agree with you. My dad, when he’s trying to get me to stop doing homework (my parents are pretty much the opposite of other parents—they think I spend too much time on homework, and I should just skip a bunch of it, and do other fun stuff instead), he always quotes Mark Twain, who said something along the lines of “don’t let your schooling get in the way of your education.”

Kiki (165): That sounds awesome! THF and I might be able to come, depending on what our summer schedule is.

Robert (187): It’s so pretty! Too perfect, though. MA would be so much more eccentric.

HAWK (216): Maybe we could arrange a big carpool? You and MF could drive to Pittsburgh, and we could drive you (we have a mini-van) up to Chicago, and perhaps pick up other MBers along the way? This has potential for epicawesomeness. (It’s far in the future, and will definitely involve much parental correspondence, but it could be great.)

On the weather front in good old North Carolina, we had what seemed to be some kind of hurritornadocane a few hours ago. I was sitting in Driver’s Ed, attempting to tune out the kid in front of me and catch some of what the teacher was saying, when the roof of the trailer started rattling. It sounded like people were dropping buckets of small stones onto the roof. Then the door I was sitting near started whistling, and the wind got really, really loud. I was pretty convinced that we were going to get a tornado warning soon, and was trying to figure out whether it would be safer to be in tornado drill position against the wall or under the desk. Then, suddenly, everything stopped–and when I walked outside at 6:00, it wasn’t even raining. Weird.

Her mouth is set, as she tries not to allow the tears in her heart to reach her eyes and spill over. The office is in a state of disarray, people have been going through it to clear out the belongings of the woman who used to live here. She passed away last month before Christmas, and these people have been working to clear out the apartment and take care of everything.
Fiddler sits there, amongst cherished memories of her friend, this woman who cannot be gone but is no longer here.

What’s awful is that they didn’t even bother asking us whether we would rather have had an extra day of school and the end of the year or missed our winter rec day. I know what people would have chosen. Some kids are even talking about getting everybody to go to the mountain anyways that day, instead of school.

I didn’t get hook, but you know Smeed in the movie? It’s like him. My name is Starky. He’s the same position as Smeed, but a different character. Smeed dosn’t exist.

Also, since the director turned it all modern instead of the time when it’s “supposed” to take place, Starky is going to be a Cyberpunk. I’m going to have so much fun with this role. Read: Green and black hair dye, Tripp jeans, and combat boots. Neon makeup. Fun.

And the pirates are supposed to be “nonconformist”, which is going to be awesome.

    304) Oh! I love biology! What level are you at? (Wait…… midterm…….I guess you’re not on block scheduling. Lucky you. I’m having EOCs.)

    306) Well, my school has block scheduling. The most aweful scheduling mess ever invented. (all thought up to save the school system moolah, but I wont get into the corruptness of the state school head honcho) In block scheduling, instead of taking all of our classes for the year at the same time, we taking half of them first semester and the other half second semester. This saves the school system money textbook wise/calculator wise/etc. Each class is squeezed into a longer time slot then before to compensate. It isn’t exactly the best set up, but I don’t exactly have a say in the matter, so…… yeah. So, what all this means, in a nutshell, is that I’m taking EOC exams both now and at the end of the year, instead of just at the end of the year.

But, really, my Mom did the math and said that, time wise, teachers are loosing 2 days compared to the normal system. So, really, they have less time. And with classes like literature and language classes, those teachers really had to cut back. I mean, you can’t make students read or learn a language twice as fast as normally. It just doesn’t work. I know she just wants me to learn classical music because even though she loves traditional music she somehow can’t see that I could ever be a fully capable musician without being able to play an advanced classical repertoire.
I wish she’d listen to Johnny Cunningham, now he was a Scottish fiddler who I would argue is just as virtuosic as any classical violinist, even though he held his instrument in a way that would make any of them faint with horror. Did that get in the way of his being an amazing musician? No, I don’t think so.

Anyway, she really seems to want me to go. I’m not entirely sure if it’s more because she wants me to play the sort of music she thinks is right or because she loved it there when she was my age. Probably some combination of both I guess.

How can I tell her that I really would rather do something else? I’d love to go somewhere over the summer by myself, I think it’d be awesome, but if I’m going to do that, I’d rather go sailing on a tall ship.
It’s not that I don’t want to learn how to play violin better and I do love classical music, I just think I could learn more that I could use in other situations. *sigh again*

Ughh. My feet hurt. I went walking in the woods today and got my feet all frozen and blistered. It was worth it though! I almost got stuck in a frozen creek. I was walking with my friend and there was snow everywhere. I took a step and couldn’t lift my foot. I thought it was stuck under a big branch or something, so I pushed away the snow and there was just slushy creek water around my foot. I couldn’t lift it by myself so my friend and I both yanked my boot at the same time. It was full of water and ice and became really heavy, then a little while later I stepped in another creek.

Make it clear you’ve thought it out, present other options, and make clear it’s not that you don’t want to go to Interlochen, it’s that there are other things you think would be better for your goals. Parents and other adults appreciate when you plan things and think them through.

I completely bombed All-District. I did even worse than I thought I would–fifth from the bottom out of sixty-five. I can come up with a lot of decent reasons why I placed that: I’ve only been working on the piece for a month, a week of which I was away for; I’ve only had four saxophone lessons so far; I got really nervous and played a lot worse than I usually do; etc. Still, I’ve never done that badly in anything before. It feels horrible, like I’m a failure. I had a breakdown over the whole thing earlier, but I’ve calmed down and now I’m thinking more rationally about it. At least now I know I’ll do better next year; it’s hard to do worse.
