Avatar Policy Notice

Attention, MBers! — Please Read

For your gravatar pictures, please do not use images that are photos of recognizable human faces. This includes celebrities.

The only exceptions would be famous people whose portrait Lady Bunniful has painted. Otherwise, she can’t make out the difference between a celebrity’s face and any random person in someone else’s yearbook.

      1. Yup, I know….makes perfect sense. *looks at avatar* *frowns* *decides icon is too small to have enough detail* *runs off to change it again*

    1. My avatar now is the “Potions Master” design from Potter Puppet Pals (featuring Severus Snape’s cartoon head surrounded by two potions bottles, with a banner underneath that says “Potions Master”. When I made comment 2.1.1, it was another design from Potter Puppet Pals, the “Cornucopia of Love” one, with Harry, Ron, and Hermione hugging Snape inside of a heart shape.

Prior to that, it was an image of Luna Lovegood, as she appears on my HBP calendar for the month of April. (In a pink outfit, wearing spectrespecs, and holding a copy of a Quibbler, taken, I think, on the Hogwarts Express *is too lazy to move less than two feet to look at her calendar for better description* )

        1. Sometimes the browers don’t refresh the image very fast. Firefox is especially slow at it for me…..

    1. You could technically leave a letter out of the email, like maybe the last letter, or something. Then the email would just be assigned a default blog avatar. Just a thought.

    1. Scratch that- I wrote to gravatar’s tech support, and figured out what was wrong. Happiness! Now I can get an avatar!

      1. Yup. Thanks. ( I’m not terribly picky, and purple is good, and the avatars no longer look insane)

  1. I think non-human avatars are okay… Unless you´re a cat too. I’ll just assume you’re human.

    *stares long and hard*

What if all the MBers are aliens ?

    *freaks out*
    *pies self*

      1. I wondered why I fit in so well, yes…

A quote from a book (I hated it, except for the quote):
“You´re an alien and I’m an alien.”-“Are we at least from the same planet ?”

I keep getting a laugh out of the fact that green card holders are “legal aliens”.

        I have an alien cat-avatar…

        *sees aliens everywhere*

  3. I don’t even know what my gravatar looks like! I use Explorer, so it’s cut off……can someone tell me what it is? :???:

      1. Thanks. I would probably change it, but I don’t think my parents would let me get an account on the gravatar site.

  4. 16.1.1- Don’t tell them. I didn’t tell mine when I got my avatar. :D Seriously, it’s not a big deal at all. It’s super easy to do, and I doubt it’s dangerous.

  5. GAPAs: My avatar is okay, right? I mean, it’s pretty obviously not me, and you can’t see the peoples’ faces… I just don’t want to be breaking any rules or anything.

do sketched pictures of people count as photos of recogniseable human faces?

    1. For instance, if I made a sketch of myself for use as an avatar, it would be far closer to an abstract drawing of quantum field mechanics than a recognizable human face.

  7. 18.1- Okay, good. I’m probably going to switch between a few avatars, so tell me if any of them aren’t okay. None of them would be of anyone I know, but…yeh.

    20.1-

  8. Is there a way to change the base gallery of avatars? These wacky smiley faces are more than a little disconcerting. I rather liked the nice pattern ones that you had on MuseAcademy for awhile. Of course, I have a gravatar account, so it doesn’t really apply to me, but some of those faces are, like I said, a little tough to get used to.

  9. I happen to LIKE the strange smiley faces! Though they do look an awful lot like me… Still, it’s rather comforting, in a way.

  10. I am thinking I’d like to change mine, though. One can only stare at a triangle that looks like you for so long.

  11. Umm, GAPAs? I just made one and it’s wickedly awesome coolio, but how do I get it to be on MB? My parents said I could, and it’s a picture of a swan (nothing incriminating), and I also used my secondary email for the account (not the one I have as my email here). Meh?????

    1. We’re not in charge of personalized avatars. To get those, you have to go to a Web-wide avatar registrar at gravatar.com. (Gravatar = “globally recognized avatar.”) We’re not pushing anyone onto that site, just noting that that’s how it’s done.

      1. Are there any other sites that do that? It would be helpful for me if I could find one that distinguishes by IP address, not e-mail.

  12. 28.1.1- *is relieved* I changed it anyway, but it was quite funny for a while.
29-Use Firefox instead of internet explorer. Yours is a square, blue, smiling face looking up with eyebrows slanted inwards (towards the middle of the face). I hope that make any sort of sense/was a bit helpful.
30- If you’re talking about a gravatar account, then you just need to type in the email address you used in the account.

  13. Ok, I changed the little E-mail box to my secondary email, the one I used on Gravatar. *fingers crossed* I hopes it works!

    1. The rule stands. Enforcement is complicated by the fact that new avatars don’t show up in the browsers, sometimes for weeks. On any given day, between my 2 computers, I may see 4 different avatars for one person because different ones will show up in the moderation queue than on the blog proper. I usually don’t have the faintest idea which is current.

GAPA life would be much simpler if MBers would stick with one avatar. We know this won’t happen, but we would definitely like for the celebrity faces to disappear.

  14. Sorry, GAPAs. Changed, but I don’t know if it will show up. My previous one was Quinn from Glee, no one I know.

        1. Yeah, it’s been doing that lately, which I guess is good, but now I feel really frivolous looking at that avatar… Oh well! Enc made it for me.
