AP Source: Michael Jackson dies in LA hospital
By NEKESA MUMBI MOODY and DERRIK J. LANG – 43 minutes ago
LOS ANGELES (AP) — Michael Jackson, the moonwalking former child star who became known the world over as the “King of Pop” before his life and career deteriorated in a freakish series of scandals, died Thursday, a person with knowledge of the situation told The Associated Press. He was 50.
The person said Jackson died in a Los Angeles hospital. The person was not authorized to speak publicly and requested anonymity.
The circumstances of his death were not immediately clear. Jackson was not breathing when Los Angeles Fire Department paramedics responded to a call at his Los Angeles home about 12:30 p.m., Capt. Steve Ruda told the Los Angeles Times. The paramedics performed CPR and took him to UCLA Medical Center, Ruda told the newspaper.
Jackson’s death brought a tragic end to a long, bizarre, sometimes farcical decline from his peak in the 1980s, when he was popular music’s premier all-around performer, a uniter of black and white music who shattered the race barrier on MTV, dominated the charts and dazzled even more on stage.
He was perhaps the most exciting performer of his generation, known for his feverish, crotch-grabbing dance moves, his high-pitched voice punctuated with squeals and titters. His single sequined glove and tight, military-style jacket were trademarks second only to his ever-changing, surgically altered appearance. Over the years, his skin became lighter and his nose narrower.
THIS IS A BREAKING NEWS UPDATE. Check back soon for further information. AP’s earlier story is below.
LOS ANGELES (AP) — Michael Jackson, the record-breaking, sensationally gifted “King of Pop” who emerged from childhood superstardom to become the entertainment world’s most influential singer and dancer, and the tabloid world’s most disturbing celebrity, has died. He was 50.

Remember I was talking about fireworks the other day, and silly people shooting off fireworks in June? Well, it wasn’t fireworks, it was a mock battle with tall ships. And I missed it! I found out this morning, and thought, “Oh my god, how stupid of me” but it wasn’t until a few minutes ago that I learned Mother found out minutes after I had left the grocery store where she dropped me off on her way to the country, and she went back in to find me, but couldn’t, so she called my sister and told her to tell me. But she forgot, and I came back in and watched Hornblower, which is poor substitute for actual tall ships. I found that Mother had called my phone and called back to see why, but she didn’t answer, so I never found out until now. It’s funny how disappointing events become so much worse when you find out that had circumstances been slightly different, everything would have turned out nicely. Earlier today I sort of shrugged it off, but now there are tears streaming down my face. And my eyes hurt.

And get a haircut, hopefully the salon will have a space for me…even though mom isn’t really in favor of me getting a haircut like I want, and since it’s drastic and I’m already a bit apprehensive it’s not exactly helping me feel any better about it.

I decided to turn it into a sculpture of Nessie, the Loch Ness (or my lake’s) Monster. It turned out pretty well, I used two largish shells for her eyes even. It’s maybe… 15 feet long? And about 2.5 feet tall on the back. I took pictures, hehe.

I wonder what the people who live across the lake will think… from that distance they wouldn’t be able to see it’s seaweed at first. Hehehe.

24.1~ It’s actually a kind of long short haircut, if that makes sense. Layers all over, several inches long. Shorter layers in the back, and longer ones in front that frame my face (they’re longer) and a fringe (bangs) that can be pushed to either side. When it’s pulled to the front emphasizing heavy bangs and rounded curve it looks almost Beatles-ish, even though I’m not a fan. (In my defense it’s because I’ve never actually really listened to them, though I probably should.)
But if any of that made sense, it’s kind of short, a drastic change from mid-back length like it was, but there’s still plenty of hair.
I think I probably should have been a little more firm in having it shorter, but the poor hairdresser just looked terrified of making it too short, so I figured this was good enough and since she didn’t totally understand what I meant I didn’t want to to get scary for both of us.

    • It was one of my more radical moments. Part of my New Wave finery.

I was very careful and methodical about the cutting. If it had been a disaster, I figured I could cover it up long enough for it to grow out — my hair grows very quickly. Last time I cut it that short wasn’t too long before we met, maybe a year , two at most. (Now I use electric clippers though. Much easier.)

Re: Hair: My hair’s quite short now; never longer than my chin. It’s quite nice, because I have to get it cut frequently in order to keep it that way, and I can experiment and then in a month whatever I did is gone. Every time I go to get it cut I do something a little different. A while ago I got a point in my bangs, but it looked bad, so now I have them straight. Last time he straightened my hair, which made it lovely and sleek, but then I washed it and it unstraightened, which is fine by me; now it’s back to normal straightness. The guy who does my hair (he’s a friend of ours) is itching to put color in it, but that would take longer to grow out, and I don’t want to ruin my versatility. So I might just get the very tips of my hair colored black or blond and then it would grow out. I should probably make some kind of appointment; I thought there was going to be a hair party on Wednesday. but when I asked my friend she said she actually had an appointment and knew nothing of a party, so I didn’t go, but I’d still like to.

(And I have 2 lab science courses each semester next year!)

Re: Hair-I donated mine to Locks of Love when I was in 5th grade. I think it was about 10 inches that I donated. My hair was SO SHORT! Like, couldn’t pull it back into a ponytail short. It wasn’t like a boy’s cut, though. I liked it for a while, but then it got really hard to style. I grew it out again and then got some long layers. My hair is almost halfway down my back now. I straighten it because otherwise it’s frizzy, poofy, and REALLY annoying. My hair is also super thick, so straightening it flattens it out a little.

Okay. I’m thinking of cutting my own hair at the end of the summer. I’m going to do something radically different than my usual ‘do, because I recently realized that I have had more or less the same haircut since forever. I figure that highschool is a good place to do something crazy with my hair because I don’t really need people to take me too seriously. What I’m thinking of doing is a Tank Girl- esque haircut. Sort of long pieces in the front beside my face and shaved at the back. I think it would look interesting at the least. I’m just looking for opinions right now. I don’t know if I have the guts to shave off my hair… which is funny because I’ve always said “It’s only hair who cares?” So yeah. I think I’ll probably do it, I just want a bit of input. :)

    Thanks,

To make this not a PoPo, I would love to cut my hair short, but I’m far too lazy to actually do it. I hate long hair, and my hair’s already past my shoulders. I want to get it cut, say, five or six inches. But maybe I’ll wait to donate it to Locks of Love. Thoughts?

Actually, I can only think of one or two others that are that bright…

Regarding hair, I think that you should definitely cut and donate it. It’s a great program (I’ve said that before already, but I’ll say it again…) and short hair is a million and one times easier to take care of then long hair. I mean, it only takes like two seconds to brush, and just a little longer to wash. It’s especially good if you don’t have the time to take care of tangles in the morning-something I HATE dealing with. And there are a bunch of really cute yet really easy styles you can do with it…just a few reasons why you should donate it!! :)

My hair’s down to the very bottom of my ribs. I, for one, love having long hair. I don’t ever do things with my hair anyway, and I like the way it looks on me long. I can hide in it. It’s also naturally straight, and the color gets darker/lighter (mostly darker though) every year and when it’s long you can see all the different shades. I get a lot of compliments on it.

My hair was around my chin until 5th grade, when I finally was able to convince my mother I hated it. I grew it out as much as I could with the frequent haircuts she made me have, so it was still only a bit past my shoulders in 8th grade until I decided to grow my bangs out and make the frequent haircuts unnecessary.

Ok, my main beef with vegetarianism is with ethical vegetarians. By refusing to condone a gastronomic habit that is entirely natural out of moral concern for animals elevates the animal to a position of importance equal to or greater than other human beings. As an absolute humanist, I find this abhorrent. I find it denigrating to the value of human life.
In addition, from a sociological point of view, it is impossible for a person to claim vegetarianism or veganism without being a hypocrite. Our society exists only because we as humans have managed to assert specieistic dominance over what we now call “animals”. With the exception of certain forms of bacteria and viruses, we are the only species that has managed to expand beyond the carrying capacity of its evolutionary niche and actually upset the self-regulating ecosystem of the planet. Whether this is intrinsically good or bad is irrelevant, as we all live in this society now, and for as much as we may like to moan and complain about it, the fact of the matter is that most of us have shelter, food, and don’t have to keep an eye out for carnivorous predators every time we leave the house. This is because we are a superior species, with superior moral, intellectual and spiritual capacities, and as such it is almost our evolutionary and humanitarian duty to continue eating meat.

Now, animal rights. Animals don’t have rights, because they don’t have responsibilities, nor do they have the potential (unless by very large evolutionary standards) to ever have responsibilities. You want to be a vegan who believes in animal rights? Go spend a day naked in the Amazon, using only your wits and instinct, and see how much the first predator you meet cares about your “rights”.

The only argument I could possibly grant credibility to is Jerry Levinson’s. He argues that any entity that can feel pain has the right to not be forced to suffer it. All very well in principle, but the human race has not yet reached the point of humanitarian progress that we can respect this principle among ourselves, and it would be anti-humanitarian to inverse the priorities and concentrate on animals instead of humans first.

    Pie 0

However, not all “ethical vegetarians” are vegetarians because of animal rights. Many do not eat meat for environmental reasons, or because most meat in America is highly processed and full of chemicals and hormones, among other substances.

Food Inc, which came out a couple weeks ago, provides an interesting (if basic) view of several food industries in the US, one of them being the meat packing industry. I wouldn’t run out to see it, but maybe if you could find a copy online, you would find it interesting.

I usually try to keep track, but I didn’t realize this particular conversation had branched off a previous one.

The software bumps all subsequent posts to the bottom of the page, where they will stay, along with any further replies made to any of them. I didn’t want to delete everyone’s comments, so I had to repost all of them one by one, logging in and out each time. (If I tried to repost them while logged in, it still showed my avatar even without my other information, which is why some of you saw Armada’s comment with my avatar. Hence the need to log in and out.)

Unfortunately, the software doesn’t provide any internal warnings that the limit has been reached. Maybe the next upgrade will correct that.

Those last four comments are all on the same level. Basically, 91 is a level, 91.1 is a level, 91.1.1, 91.1.1.1, etc., until it reaches 91.1.1.1.1.1.1.1.1, at which point the “reply” button will disappear. But, for example, 91.1.2.1.4 is on the fifth level, or 91.4.2.6.3.2.1.1 is on the eighth level.

However, i felt alienated because of my lack of freedom in discussing this topic.

Well this flurry of activity surrounding nesting and layers is interesting, but I have a question of a different nature: Why does our language have both capital and lowercase letters? I really don’t know where to look or ask, a little internet searching brought about the intriguing Alphabet26 (or should I say aLPHaBeT 26?), interestingly housed on the website of a typographer and web designer named Paul Baker, but there seems to be too little discussion of your glyphs these days.

I survived another recital. The singers were pretty scary again this year. *shudders* They can’t sing. And since most of the other kids were younger (there were three other teenagers, and I think I might have been the oldest, but not entirely sure) they were wandering around and making noise and forgetting to take their music up with them, etc. Or letting the dog in to wander up through the isle when I was playing my piece (the Bach double violin concerto) with my teacher. It was pretty funny actually, but I wasn’t the one who messed up, anyway…..it went alright.

I absolutely cannot believe that we’re leaving on Tuesday and that that’s the day after tomorrow. I have pretty much all my clothing packed, except for a few things. My duffel bag is stuffed, and it didn’t seem like that much. Geez.. But now I get to pack all the fun things, like toothpaste and all, whee!
I’ve started on my ditty bag, hopefully I can get it finished before we go….but if not I’ll be able o work on the lanyards while there, even though that’s not ideal. I’ll have it into a bag before I go at least so it’ll be somewhat useful anyway.

Only two more days. 0.o I can’t wait though, even though I’m exhausted and not feeling prepared. I keep telling myself I’ll get up early and have some extra time to write or vacuum my room or something, but when the alarm goes I turn it off and am asleep again before I can remember to open my eyes after blinking.
Of course, staying up late every night doesn’t help at all.

96.1~ I leave on Tuesday, and I’m going sailing on a tall ship for all of July and the first week of August. A ditty bag is sort of like a sailor’s toolbox, it’s a small circular canvas bag with a lanyard on top that works somewhat like a drawstring. It’s used to carry tools and other small odds and ends that are used regularly, particularly on a ship or boat.

96.2~ I plan on keeping two journals, actually. One will be the same one that I use now, the private record of my thoughts on what I’m doing and life in general that I write in on a fairly routine basis. The second one will probably be just a notebook in which I’ll write what I’ve done and things I’m learning, possibly accompanied by drawings or figures to elucidate entries, though I warn you that I am a very poor artist and may confuse more than enlighten. But I’ll endeavor to do my best.
Then I always carry a notebook as well, where I record all manner of odd things, pictures, information I want to remember, lists, entries almost like a journal, everything. It’s most strange in conjunction with the journal, but it’s the way I’ve operated since I decided to be like Harriet the spy and always carry a notebook. And then when I decided to add a regular journal to that, and, well….but I digress.
So yes, the simple answer would be that I plan to keep track of what I’m doing.
I also started a blog that I hope to be able to update when I get ashore, so whoever wants can follow along. It may work, it may not. Hopefully I’ll get to a computer with internet access at least a handful of times while there. Yes, I’ll stop by MB too if I do. ;)

*looks over long post* *sighs, hands over fees of virtual choklit to longsuffering GAPAs*

        • What we actually said was: “the only exceptions would be famous people whose portrait Lady Bunniful has painted. Otherwise, she can’t make out the difference between a celebrity’s face and any random person in someone else’s yearbook,” which I thought would carry that implication. The comment was prompted when I failed to recognize a picture of the actor who played Harry Potter. For some reason, although I have excellent recognition of faces I’ve seen in real life, I have considerable impairment recognizing faces on screen — even some of those I should know, if they change their hairstyle or color or wear a hat. I haven’t actually painted Jeff Bridges, but I’ve seen his Dude persona enough times to recognize it as a graphic image.

Hello all. Sorry for my abscence. Our computer had a virus and I way unable to use the internet (on this computer) for a while. much has happened , but I can’t really remember it all right now so I shall talk about Laser in his box.
I was cleaning my room( I want to paint it) and so I cleared out largeish box that originally contained a fish tank. It was sitting in my kitchen, waiting to be carried into the garage when Laser (my cat)came upon it. There was a hole torn in one of the sides when we got it and he began batting at the flap and reaching his paws through, attacking it in general. Then I decided to put his lemur in the box and play with him through the hole. that was funny. Then I put the box over him. at first he looked out through the hole but after a short while he hid his face. I peered into the hole to seee what he was doing and all of a sudden he poked his little white paw out through the hole, into my face. That was probabbly very boring to you. It was more interesting watching.
my mom found somebody’s drug equiptment (pipe and lighter) in our backyard yesterday. we arent sure whose it was and we were not sure what to do until we remembered that my sister and I recieved a wildlife camera for christmas last year and we were going to set it up but we never got around to it. I’m not sure what were going to do about it now. It’s kind of creepy, because I always thought that our woods(approx 30 by 100 feet) was a safe place. there may be the occasional deer or coyote, but other than that, perfectly safe. eeehhhhhh.
The other day, a garden store near our house was having a big half off sale so we went and bot four tomato plants and some pumpkins and cucumbers and peppers and marigolds and snapdragons. I do like plants.
wow, that was long and probably boring. I’ll just go have lunch now.

I’ll just haul five tons of books out of my room to the library in the barn, throw away all those used tissues, program fliers, notebook papers, broken hairbands, and incredible junk, put my shoes in their box and straighten the bedclothes which will pretty much make my room look empty. I’ve been meaning to do it for ages, but haven’t mostly because of the sheer amount of books that dominate the entire floor and every available crevice. I should clear off the bookshelves too, so I can out the books I’m using on them. *sigh* But that’s going to be even more hauling. Perhaps I’ll go find a wagon to carry them in. I’m not even exaggerating, I probably have hundreds of books crammed in there and I’ll need to take a lot of them down and organize and, and…… *dies*

Alright. Back to a debate from several months ago that started when I stated that Harry Potter was not literature. I have been thinking about this for sometime, and I am still convinced that I am correct, and I have come to the conclusion of what Harry Potter can be classifyed as: a fad. Obviously, Harry Potter has resonated largely with fans across the globe, but that doesn’t mean it will stand the test of time. The best literature stays fresh and good for decades, and centuries. If, in 100 years, Harry Potter is as popular as ever, I will (possibly) change my opinion, from the grave.
