Since I’m to lazy, I just copied this off the Random Stuff thread.
—
I’m made of opposites – hard rock and classical.
I’ve gotten a lot of copies of rock CDs in the past but i’ll always stick with GREEN DAY! *begins to absentmindedly hum songs* There also Nickelback, American Rejects, and the one some people hate, the album “Breakaway” (I can’t remember who wrote that…)
I also like crossover – this is a new kind of music – it’s a cross between classical and jazz/light country. My fave’s Turtle Island String Quartet – their album “4+Four” is excellent, filled with octet modern music and a wonderful cello duet (“Julie-O”)
And there’s the Trans-Siberian Orchestra – they put on Rock Operas… they’re pretty good, but they specialize in Christmas themes… but the album “Beethoven’s Last Night’ is totally awesome, in my opinion.
That reminds me – THE PHANTOM LIVES 4 EVA!!!!!!!!!!!!
*begins to sing main theme*
Phantom of the Opera, for those who don’t have a clue.
Totally awesome.

(2-)Blleeeeeech, hard rock I hateth. I love the cello, though! (I play the cello, trumpet, and piano–just started on cello this year) A CROSS BETWEEN CLASSICAL, JAZZ, AND LIGHT COUNTRY?!?!?!?!?! How could they do such a thing to classical and jazz? I also hate all country.
(justme) I adore jazz, classical and new age. A new age song called Hillside View was the thing that inspired me to play the cello, too!
I love jazz, as I already said, and especially the group Manhattan Transfer.
And Maynard Ferguson died last week. (He was a trumpet player who could hit a double high C! And that is amazing for the trumpet!)

I play violin. I love music. I know ablolutely nothing about rock, though. I almost wish I did. But I’m fine with knowing a bunch about classical.
I just recently saw a wonderful jazz and classical violinist named Diane Monroe. She has an amazing bio.
My mom is a singing teacher, and her students do a bunch of stuff with musicals. She knows tons of Broadway musicals and has a lot of the CDs, so I know kind of a lot of musical music, too.
I’M SO GLAD WE HAVE THIS THREAD! THANK YOU, GAPAS!!!!!!!

Yay! A place to rant about Band! Just kidding.
I play piano, bass clarinet and clarinet. Much fun.
I like lots of types of music. Classical, jazz, classic rock, alternative.
Do you guys know Gnarls Barkely? The just had a hit single “Crazy”. I love that song so much! The bass it PHANTASTIQUE and his voice is so good! *goes off to listen to it*
*returns*
I also bought tickets to The Decemeberists yesterday. Does anyone know them?

I used to play cello and accordion, but I couldn’t keep up with the accordion and my cello teacher retired, so I don’t play either insturment much anymore.
I like listening to a little bit of everything, but my two favorite bands are Lemon Demon and E Nomine. Any fellow fans around? I find E Nomine particularly interesting because their music is a combination of trance and Gregorian-chant-like singing, producing a sound I’ve never heard anything quite like before. If anyone knows any other bands with the same sort of music, please let me know, since I haven’t been able to find any.

Accordion?!?! Awesome! My grampa plays the accordion. He let me try once. It’s very simple, when you get past all the buttons. I think.

Song lyric guessing time!
1) When you’re following an angel
doesn’t mean you have to throw your body off a building
Somewhere they’re meeting on a pinhead
calling you an angel calling you the nicest things
2) In the rain the pavement shines like silver
All the lights are misty in the river
In the darkness, the trees are full of starlight
And all I see is him and me for ever and forever
3) Ev’ry so often we long to steal
To the land of what-might-have-been
But that doesn’t soften the ache we feel
When reality sets back in
4) I want to raise my freak flag
Higher and higher and
I want to raise my freak flag
And never be alone
Never be alone
Have fun!

I play the cello, the baritone horn (bass clef), and hammered dulcimer.
HAMMERED DULCIMER ROCKS!
that’s the trapezoid shaped instrument with lots of strings that you hit with hammers – it’s really great.
At my school, There are only two female low-brass players – me, and some junior.

Cello and bassoon. Also flute, bass guitar, and piano, but I’m terrible at those last three.
High school band bassoon music is HARD. Extremely hard.
I listen to all sorts of stuff: hard rock, heavy metal, classical, alternative, pop-rock… So long as it sounds good, I love it.
Yes, heavy metal sounds good. Be open-minded, man!
#5: Ha, I luv that song.
#12: Dulcimers sound so pretty.
#13: \m/ !!! (Hehe…)
Let’s see…..Ha, I just finished watching the VMAs. Panic! At The Disco, Fall Out Boy, AFI, A7X……They ALL won, and I’m muy happy for them!! So you can probably guess what type of musik I’m into. Well…I guess you could look and my name here and probably know!
I think my favourit type of musik now is New-Wave metal.
\m/ !!!
-Such as Lacuna Coil, Dragonforce, etc. I also like emocore, which is like emo (Yes, that is actually considered a musik genre now… : / ), only without all the annoying, whining vocals and pop-ish beats. My friend recently introduced me to metalcore, and…….to be honest, I think a lot of it is more noise than musik. But there is this metalcore / black metal band called In Flames, that I like v much. I saw them live at Sounds of the Underground this year, and they were amazing…They’re from Sweden…Heh heh, cool accent : ) .

21 – A dulcimer is a thingy. Hers is trapezoid shaped and you hammer it. They can be shaped a few different ways, and sometimes you pluck it with some kind of pick. The # of strings differs, too. I think.

viola is king and yall know it
12/ 14/ everyone- whats a dulcimer ?

23 – I should think not! (about viola) Without viola, there would be no alto strings. But without other things, there would be none of them! In music, conductor or the composer is king. Every other instrument is important, but not the king. Or queen.

I like old rock…Elvis, the beatles.
And Johnny Cash. He rocks.
And Nirvana. And Jimi Hendrix. (But that’s requisite for where I live)
I listen to some more current music,,bu tAll American Rejects, Aidan, Sean Paul and Nickelback make me want to stick forks in my eyes. (Sorry, Bellatrix Lestrange). My theory on Nickelback is that their drummer died and they only have recordings left, and that is why all of thier songs sound EXACTLY THE SAME. (Sorry, Bellatrix)
I also like ninties hip hop. Not so much Puff Daddy and his crowd (I like exactly one of his songs…) but more the lesser known stuff. My sister plays it in her car alot, and has always played it as long as I remember, so it’s kind of comforting.

2- I’d call that pop. But not rock. Nirvana, the beatles-Thats rock.
(I’m not saying it’s bad…)
I don’t like emo. Mostly because there’s alot of “Oh, I’m soooo depressed! I’m gonna sit around and be depressed” Well, I have had chronic clinical depression. It took me ages to overcome that. So to see people act like they want to be depressed makes me so angry…
0

25- No offense meant to J-Pop/J-rock fans. I just… don’t like the sound of it. Not that I can talk, tho’, ’cause I haven’t heard that much. Forget I said anything.

(20) You, my friend, are mistakenly confusing J-pop/J-rock with Visual Kei, which is in a fact a certain type of J-rock.
WIKIPEDIA TO THE RESCUE!
“Visual Kei is characterised by bands using dramatic costumes and visual imagery to enhance the band’s performance.”
“…Visual Kei bands, being defined primarily by visual style, do not necessarily play a specific type of music. They most often play general J-Rock (Luna Sea, Antic Cafe) and vocal based pop or light rock (Glay, Gackt).
However, there are also bands playing or influenced by Heavy Metal …, Industrial rock, Punk rock and various other genres can be found. Taking the genre in a wide sense, most of the bands would be considered to play some kind of “rock” music. Particularly popular in recent years are the projects of Mana; Malice Mizer (currently on an indefinite hiatus) and Moi dix Mois.”
That said, I don’t listen to what is mostly considered Visual Kei, with the exception of a Gackt song here and there. I listen to a variety of Japanese music, actually.
American music these days just doesn’t appeal to me.

I’m fairly sure about this because my brother got the music from Mark Summer, the cellist in TISQ (he went to a camp that he gave and took a few lessons from him).
But yes, TISQ rocks. as does Apocolyptica. Finnish cellists playing Metellica and Shostakovich==love.

12- I was the only female low brass player(trombone) in my school but one of the incoming sixth grade girls might play the trombone.
According to iTunes, my top 5 favorite songs are:
We Didn’t Start The Fire by Billy Joel
Your Horoscope For Today by Weird Al Yankovic
Seasons of Love from Rent
Think of Me from Phantom of the Opera
The Weird Al Show Theme by Weird Al Yankovic
The rest of my top 25 is mostly from musicals or by Weird Al.
I also like classical and Tom Lehrer.

34 (AGTH)- Without viola, I would have nobody to tell jokes about.
Wikipedia is more reliable than Musers with mistaken impressions. And I like J-rock. Also Chinese rock. Yurs.
I consider highly successful musicians singing about how they’re going to slit their wrists and kill themselves extremely hypocritical. Emo rock=no.

Apocalyptica is love. Y’all need to listen to it. Now. ♥
Time for some questions!
Anybody here play rock? have perfect pitch? like rap? compose music?
For me, it’s sort of, no, NO, and yes.

I WISH I played rock (that would be sooo awesome). And I don’t like rap. The composing is something I’ve been wanting to do for a while, but I haven’t done it yet. And as for perfect pitch… well, I sing pretty well naturally, but not great. If I took some lessons…

(29) Not to be a stupid “ARGLE AQGENGJEHAEHA;LM” kind of person, but you can’t really judge such a broad range of sound… Of course, I hate emo music, so I suppose I know what you’re saying. Ahahahaa, long live the hypocrite~
(34) Because I’m not.
(37) The only Chinese music I’ve heard (regrettably!) is about thirty seconds of a Jay Chou song.
Yeah actually what bugs me about the so called emo music is that it just feels mean to me. I have no idea why, maybe because I think the whole phrase “emo” is just so stupid to me.
O_o Maybe I’m just odd. Now I go to crawl back under my rock. -scuttles off-

Jazz/Latin!!
Instrument(s): alto sax & piano”-JAZZ/LATIN!!!! I love jazz and latin! Alto sax, eh? I have a friend who used to play the alto sax, but then he quit because our band teacher said she was upping the practice time, and he barely had time as it was. (His mom is a principal, so he has to stay at that school after school for a loooong time.) She (meaning the band teacher) never upped the time, and our saxophones sounded terrible after he left. He was amazingly good, too.
36-I only know two other people who like Weird Al, one is my cousin, who thinks that wearing a shirt so silvery shiny and iridescent you could see it from space “cool,” so I don’t listen to his opinions very often, and then there is a bully at school who likes it…….
I wish I had perfect pitch.

31- thank you for that clarification. I only enjoy listening (usually) to foreign stuff from Brazil or Cuba. ‘Tho, Jazz still is king (or queen) of music!! I dunno. I heard some J-pop/J-rock and it didn’t appeal to me. That’s all. I’m not trying to insult anyone, here.
42- Yeah, that’s too bad. Tho’, I think that you should practice as much as you need to. I mean, if he was that good, he shouldn’t have worried about practice time unless he would be kicked out of the band for not practicing the required time. That’s too bad.

34- actually, there was a study one time that showed that Wikipedia, percentage-wise, is as reliable as this encyclopedia, I forgot which one it is…
38- I have perfect pitch! My roommate actually developed it at camp- try to sing an A440, right on pitch, without using a reference tone, as often as you can. Check it with a tuner or something. After a few days she had it, and was actually more reliable than I am..
So, ever since school started, I’ve been having this problem which has brought up an issue that I was thinking I could put off until it was time to apply for colleges.. As some of you know, maybe, I’m a fairly serious classical musician. I travel 100 miles weekly for lessons, I practice close to 20 hours a week, I’ve played gigs (okay, so one wedding and two or three thingies with a choir. so sue me), I’m starting to teach lessons, I want to be a classical musician when I grow up, or at least I think I do. My problem, however, is that I’m fairly smart, and so I’m taking 4 pre-ap classes and 1 ap class this year, out of 7 total (my only two non-advanced are orchestra and latin 2), and there’s so much homework, I end up not having very much time to practice, and then I end up getting to bed late (for me) and so am tired and unproductive. I’m starting to think that next year I might need to not take, for instance, APUSH or something, but that kind of feels like giving up, and I want to take the harder classes, but I also want to practice.. I don’t konw, I think it’s getting better, and it might just be that I’m not back in the swing of things yet, but I’m kind of coming to this conflict between my academic life and my music that I thought I wouldn’t have to face until I decided to start applying to colleges and having to decide between college/conservatory.. I don’t know.. any thoughts/comments/suggestions/anything, people?
And yes, without viola, who would we make fun of?

48-gee, I don’t know, the tiny kids who insist on playing the double bass?????!!!!!!!!
sorry if that sounded offensive, but there are a BUNCH of them at my school.
i used to play the the viola, but then i switched to the cello and then i dropped that because i have absolutely no patience or talent
any way i love hard rock. i really like system of a down, but im not sure that really qualifies as hard rock. all i know is that it drives my parents insane.

12- I used to play the hammered dulcimer, and I can still play 1 or 2 songs, but I gave it up cuz it was just too much, with piano, tooo.

I think that I am one of the few people in my school (who is not a teacher) who really likes classical music. It is sort of funny. But I am PROUD of my music tastes!!! I also like alot of music from different cultures, and blends of different styles of music.
I play the piano and the flute.
Has anybody heard of Altan? They are my favorite Irish music group.

(48) Go with what is your true passion. If you really, truly believe you have a future in music, then why bother keeping up with other stuff that you don’t even want? It’ll only take away from what you really like to do. Of course, I suppose college and requirements and such should be considered as well. But I would suggest putting music first, since you seem serious and enthusiastic about it.

Kiki (50),
I love the sound of the hammered dulcimer, but it seems to me that playing one would be frustrating–like playing the piano with drumsticks.
0
0
48 – You’re the one who was playing the one of the Paginini caprices, right? Your story reminds me (kind of) of my sort-of violin teacher in northern Michigan 2 summers ago.
53 – I know what you mean.
0
0
(35) –
The sheet music for Julie-O is for a solo cello, but on the album 4+Four, it’s a duet of Mark Summer and (i think) David Ying. I’ve seen it performed live and it was absolutely amazing. OMG YOU KNOW ABOUT APOCOLYPTICA!?! You are amazing. Apocalyptica was the first rock I had ever listened to, and now rock is one of favorite gendres. You rock.
(53) –
the dulcimer isn’t really all that hard to play – once you have a general feel for the instrument (that’ll take about a year), it’s actually really easy to play. Just like cello – no frets, just go by feel.
0
0
55 – Like the cello – no frets? Most stringed instruments don’t have frets. I don’t think of things as having no frets. I think of them as having frets. (If those things apply, of course)
0

Bellatrix (55),
Not hard, just confining. No chords with more than two notes, just arpeggios. And aren’t they tuned so that you can play only in certain keys?
Still, lovely music.

38- i have somewhat perfect pitch, singing wise. on instruments, i can’t remember what note is which sometimes. i hate rap, and with a passion. why would anyone WANT to listen to someone TALK!!!! i can’t compose music or play rock, but i’m working on the rock thing. guitar. yeah.
well, i play the violin, and somewhat play the guitar, and like punk rock. (did i menion i hate rap?)

I don’t play rock. i wish I did. My mom has sheet music for Stairway to Heaven which sounds nothing like the original on piano. I’ve tried that. I sometimes compose music (yes, sixteen measures counts.) and my piano teacher seems to think i’m good at it. I don’t like rap and i can’t remeber the other thing. Pink Floyd rocks! Well, actually more flows than rocks. Ahhhhh… I’m on Wish You Were Here right now.
0

60 – I’ve never tried to do that. Occasionally I’ll give a poem a tune, and on a rare occasion is the tune pretty good, but mostly I fiddle around with my violin. (get it? Fiddle?!) *falls down in fake laughter*

I consider myself to have refined tastes in music. I listen to metal. (no one say anything). Not Nu-Metal, like slipknot or korn (those bands suck- couldn’t play a scale to save their life) but I listen to the immensely complicated, classical-jazz-folk inspired metal. Seriously, It’s like the second highest art form, next to classical and jazz, which are on equal standing. It totally dominates punk, rock, rap, techno, reggae and all that other junk by actually being good music. (I hate punk, rap and pop btw).
To the first post: how can you like TSO and like Green Day at the same time? What the hell? TSO is a thousand times more complex and talented musicians than Green Day. D’you know that the entire American Idiot album (a moronic album btw) uses just ONE guitar chord? and an insanely simple one at that? If you like TSO, though, go check out Savatage. It’s the songwriters, singers and guitar players of TSO in their original band.
0
0
What’s metal? All I can think of is steel drums, and I don’t think that is what it is.
*pies FS, if new, with a large cherry-and-key-lime pie*
I vaguely remember what TSO stands for…….is it Trans-Siberian something?
0
0
and crossover is not a new kid of music. Jesus, it’s been around for ages! crossover just means a style of music made up of different ones. And TSO don’t ‘specialize’ in christmas themes, they just use the setting of christmas to convey their three-piece opera. And it’s metal, not rock.
0
0
TSO is trans siberian orchestra. Metal (the real stuff) is one of the only styles of music (the others being classical and jazz) where a you actually have to be a talented musician to play it. Most metal musicians have classical educations in music, studied at conservatories and practice for hours a day. They also have to be great songwriters, as metal is often an extremely emotional style. Many bands are Tolkien inspired (the books, not the movies, you media-slaves ;)) and Blind Guardian were supposed to compose and play the soundtrack for the movies, but they were to busy with their own stuff. The basic metal band is made up of 2 guitars, a drum, a bass and a singer. Many singers have operatic studying behind them. Most bands, however, also have a keyboard player, or a piano player, or a violinist or even an entire orchestra.
And for Satan’s sake, cut the pie crap. It wasn’t funny the first time, and it isn’t funny now.

Okay, okay. So all this stuff about metal… All it does is scream at you, and when you’re done listening to it you feel like you just stepped out of a blender. Talk about brain atrophy! There’s nothing in it to listen to. Just noise. And the lyrics are awful. I want to know why anybody wants to listen to that garbage. (Right, I know I’m opinionated about this subject, but I think this impostor trying to pose for music is really awful.)
Not that I like the smushy classical stuff. I’m more the “Marche Slave” by Tchaikovsky, Rachmaninoff Piano Concerto 2, Beethoven’s fifth (…had to put that in there), etc. And the boomier and crashier the better. I love the Slavic composers (I know, Beethoven’s German, but he’s one of my favorites). They really put soul into their music. And has anyone heard of Bedrich Smetana?
Okay, I’ll quit. You all probably think I’m pretty wierd. See ya.

70-You obivously have no idea what you’re talking about. Metal doesn’t scream at you. Probably the only metal you’ve heard is the mainstream stuff which does suck. I mean the underground, tolkien-inspired lyrics, beautiful soaring melodies, singers with amazing vocal range… And if you like beethovens fifth (i prefer his ninth, personally) then you would really enjoy most of the stuff I listen to. How about this, I’ll post a list of bands and you can google them. Most of the home pages have mp3s that you can listen to. So learn a bit before you start saying how horrible it is.

Lizzie (48) – it’s a bit unfair to force you into choices this early, but there’s no point burning yourself out. If you’re doing 20+ hours a week practice, enjoying it, and cursing other stuff for getting in the way of more, you sound like a musician. If there aren’t enough hours in the day, something has to be shelved. It need only be temporary. When you’re established in a musical career adn earning a bit of dosh, there are always part time courses to catch up on any academic areas you want to revisit.
Big question – how much do you want to earn? Unless you get right to the top in classical, you can forget the big house and the smart car. There are only a very few places right at the top, and it’s insanely competitive.
On the other hand, lower down the scale, it’s a rather pleasant life. Musicians are usually nice people – even the fierce ones. I’ve met plenty of people with big houses and smart cars, and I think I’ll stick to my hurdy-gurdy.
Whatever you do, have fun.

Dulcimers – don’t get confused. There’s a proper dulcimer (I make them), which is a trapezoidal thing you play with hammers, and there’s a scheitholt, which is a stick with metal strings stretched across it, which you play with a pick. It eventually crossed the Atlantic, and a bunch of persons up in the Appalachians, presumably of German descent, rather took to it and added a soundboard. It was now far too pretty to be called a scheitholt, so they called it a dulcimer, having not the faintest idea what a dulcimer was. It’s now referred to as a “mountain dulcimer” or “Appalachian dulcimer”. It’s not a bad little instrument. But it’s not a dulcimer.

PB&J –
Have you ever heard of “Musicmaker’s”? They make instrument kits and plans, for folk stringed instruments like hurdy-gurdies, lutes, guitars, harps, dulcimers, and all sorts of other things. Ever heard of them?

86: I hadn’t come across “Musicmaker’s”. Ta for the reference. it looks interesting.
You may be interested to know that I make and play hurdy-gurdies. 16th century ones. Have a look at my website at http://www.diabolus.org. You have to promise mot to laugh too loud at the silly pictures of me in tights.
Meanwhile, welcome to the select club of hurdy-gurdy players. There aren’t many of us, but we’re a glorious bunch.

@paul baker: You might like some of the bands i posted, like Rhapsody. They use baroque and medival instruments in many songs. It’s awesome to hear a violin duetting with an electric guitar and a flute. (although those aren’t necessarily medival instruments). Many folk-metal bands (Arkona, Finntroll, Tenhi) use stuff like Hurdy-Gurdys in their music. Sounds awesome.

I’m still waiting for some feedback from ANYONE who actually checked out some of the stuff i posted.

#72: Dragonforce! Heck yeah!
#73: I’ve only heard Knights of Cydonia but I luuuuuuvvvvvvv it; their new album is def on my shopping list!
This seems to be one of those threads where ppl tend to get brutally honest (more so than the other threads, at least). So (I’m not looking for a fight / argument or anything).
I relly don’t see why so many ppl are obsessed w/ Green Day. I mean, their musik’s OK, but it’s not…erm… creative …or anything like that. And…Jeesh, who would name a band Green Day? Oh well. Guess it sounded good to them.
I hate how some ppl are against “emotional” musik. Quoting my mother (The other day when I was playing one of my CDs in the kitchen) “How come they wrote that song if they weren’t happy?”
I LOVE New-Wave metal! Good New-Wave Metal bands:
*Lacuna Coil
*lostprophets
*My Chemical Romance

People, haven’t you read the article??? PB&J’s first…aah i remember that. I was like “who is this guy omgsqueeez!!11!!! he goes on my hero list” If you can get it off back issues, get it.

(85) That’s..that’s not true. I don’t like rap, but it is certainly music. Music=whatever people what it to be, and some people want it to be rap.
(94) Isn’t ALL music emotional? O_o
Also-
EVERYONE GOOGLE WINTERSLEEP RIGHT NOW AND GO TO THEIR WEBSITE. I love “Danse Macabre”.

101-Isin’t Danse Macabre a piece of music written by Saint-Seans(Yes, I know, spelling…)? I looked Wintersleep up, but there’s not enough time for me to go to the website ( because of school!). Later today I will! I can’t wait!

Green Day are pretty much pwned by anyone who can actually play an instrument. And Apocalyptica rock, but do you know their older stuff too? Or just the recent one that got a lot of publicity? Cuz their old stuff, when they were doing Metallica covers totally pwns the new stuff.

One show that I LOVE called American Idol is all music. The 6th season’s auditions are going on right now. So far, the American Idols are Kelly Clarkson (season 1), Ruben Studdard(season 2) Fantasia Barrino (Season 3), Carrie “Underwear” as I call her (Season 4),and my FAVORITE winner, Taylor Hicks (season 5).wOOt for Taylor and Kelly!!!!!

104: oh God. Worst show ever. Worst music ever.
what i would LOVE is for a bunch of facepainted, hairy, satanical death metal bands to show up, scare the hell out of everyone and proceed to sacrifice the judges if they don’t win.
0
0
That actually happened in this year’s Eurovision song contest. (Well, apart from the sacrifice.) Have you heard about the Finnish entry?
0

106: Lordi were awesome. But they’re not satanic. They’re just an awesome hard rock band. I watched the whole hideous parade of euro-pop vileness just to see the finns, and they totally blew me away. They just HAD to win. Amazing performance (the wings at a certain point were a nice touch), solid catchy songwriting, good lyrics, pretty fine playing…
So now Europe has recognized metal, I wait for the same to happen in the US. Some band like Gorgoroth or Darkthrone coming and scaring the living bat-infested darknesses out of everyone. I’d probably die out of overdose of pwnage.

That’s some serious listing you’ve got going on there, FS. I’m going to go look some of them up. Well, actually no. My brother is waiting for me to be done with the computer, but i absolutely will look them up when there’s no line. Country isn’t as bad as rap, but i find it extremely intolerable.
0

Country’s actually ok i think. In small doses. Or if you have just a hint of country, like the Eagles or something. Too much of it is very annoying though.
I totally looked up the words to bohemian rhapsody so i can sing it and get it stuck in everybody’s head now *evil cackle* i love that song, but it’s been stuck in my head all day.

#105: Hehehehehehehehe…That would be great.
I saw a couple Satanic bands (At least I think they were) at SotU last month, and…they were freaking hilarious. Gwar and Behemoth. They had these relly stupid, over-the-top costumes, and Gwar even dragged this robot dinosaur onstage…Guess they were trying to look cool…or something. But they just looked stupid. And their musik def sucked as well. Songs that hav no point to them (other than to get under other ppl’s skin, that is)…Grr…
Didn’t black metal / metalcore originate in Sweden?
114: GWAR aren’t satanic. Just funny. obscene lyrics. And i can assure you they weren’t trying to look cool, just silly.
Behemoth are yes satanic. But the music does not suck. If you like In Flames (everything apart from STYE is awesome), then give yourself some time and you’ll adore Behemoth. Inferno (the drummer) is inhumanly fast. Go watch a video of him playing on youtube or something. He’s a monster.
Early In Flames>New In Flames (although Come Clarity and Reroute To Remain rock)
and the Eagles aren’t country. They’re classic rock.
0
0
btw in case you’re wondering what GWAR means it’s an acronym for God What an Awful Racket.
0

oh and black metal originated in britain, with the band Venom. Metalcore originated in the states in recent years and is a crap copy of what actual artists in Europe (mostly scandinavia: my fave bands are almost all finnish) were doing.

oh and while i’m at it: here’s a good link that offers free downloads of folk and viking metal. I’m not gonna make it clickable, so the GAPAs shouldn’t be worried.

115-note phrase “hint of country” they’re really soft rock but they have southern accents.
the idea of gwar sounds slightly amusing, but i don’t think i’d like them.
so game tomorrow, we’re doing pregame for an away game which is kind of sad really but africentric doesn’t have a band. they have a pretty amazingly hard-core drumline though. we’re gonna have a squad of three and it’s going to be terribly annoying. andy’s such a loser. ah well. Anyhoo, we have a home game next week, and we did sir duke and actually didn’t suck! it was incredible. Although it’s not really a terribly hard song once you know the notes. it just looks extremely intimidating. we haven’t done the marching to fire yet. i’m kinda skared for that cuz we really haven’t practiced it at all. september’s not bad. In the stone sucks majorly. nobody can play that. we can barely sound halfway decent reading the music, no way we’ll do that while marching. although we might stand still for it, idk…
btw if we don’t have a band thread (which we might still have one that isn’t closed down…i’ll have to check…) i’ll probably use this one or the main one to ramble about marching. Cuz yah. So yep. XD

I like They Might Be Giants, the soundtracks from various musicals (Wicked, Les Mis), Franz Ferdinand, some Queen, some Led Zepplin, the LotR soundtrack. Anyone have suggestions of what else I might like?
0

(102) Heh, I actually have no idea, I’m new to their music. It’s still really good though!
Also, I retract any statement I made about certain music being stupid. Because I realized today that people like what they like, and that’s cool.

Classical music:
Being brought up playing the cello, I can never not love classical music. Of course, my fave artist is Yo-yo Ma.
Who’s yours?
and don’t diss the classics. DON’T.
0
0
122) Me, I like Winton Marsalis, Maynard Ferguson, and Yo-Yo Ma!
I LURVE classics!
You play the cello? I just started this year.
And from the other favorite artists, you can tell that I also play the trumpet, and love jazz. The reason I like YYM so much (sorry, just so much work to press the hyphen key, I am feeling lazy) is because he has played jazz!!!!!! On the cello!!!! YAYYY!!!! MY HERO!!!!!!!!!!
Who could not love someone who plays jazz on an instrument that does not normally play jazz?

#116: Hehehehehehe I didn’t know it stood for that…That’s exactly what I was thinking when I heard them at SotU last month!
Viking Metal? Is that actually a genre?
Most of the bands I like are from Europe (What is up w/ that?)
In Flames
lostprophets
Lacuna Coil
Muse
People in Planes
HIM
Trivium (?)

trivium are from the states. and they suck arse. big time. And yes, viking metal is a genre. and it’s awesome. check out Ensiferum, Nordheim, Thyrfing, ecc. In fact, on the link i posted are lots of bands labelled viking metal.

elassë~adael, i don’t know what you would like, but i like 5 out 6 things you like, as i haven”t heard of the Franz Ferdinand, and i also really like Blue Oyster Cult and Golden Earring. Especially Twilight Zone by the latter. And of course, i recommend Pink Floyd, but then, i’d recommend Floyd to someone who didn’t even like music. I find the Talking Heads to be somewhat similar to TMBG. Has anybody ever heard of Matisyahu? He’s this froody Jewish Regea guy.

Sorry to double-post, but elassë~adael, if you ever run across the video for Twilight Zone, beware of topless lady. Otherwise, it’s a pretty good video, especially the singing gangsters, and sometimes it’s edited anyway.

82- yeah, I’m thinking about taking US History in summer school so I can take a study hall next year.. I guess one of my biggest worries is that I’ll decide I want to do music, push everything else aside, etc, and then burn out and discover that I really wanted to, say, be a math teacher or something.. but I guess it’s true that I could always go back..
122- I don’t have a favorite artist, but one of my favorite CDs is the Schubert cello quartet with the Emersons and Rostrophovich..
120- there was a girl at school with a TMBG shirt today.. it made me happy..

#131: Yeah…He wasn’t at the Ozzfest in Detroit though…my friend and I were disappointed.
LOL, I’m blogging to Karma Code (Lacuna Coil) right now…for some reason, i always end up listening to Karma Code or Comalies during my evening blogging… Karma Code (Their latest album) is cool, but I like Comalies best…It’s less “power metal” and more “new wave,” I think.

Lacuna Coil is european female-fronted goth metal. No power whatsoever. The new one (Karmacode) is trying to appeal to little core kiddies at ozzfests who don’t know bollocks about music, but just like moshing. Karmacode was dumbed down, much simpler stuff, and Comalies is a lot better. I myself don’t really like the whole female-fronted goth thing but… It’s still better than Trivium…

(48,130, &c.) Lizzie, I’ve thought about your dilemma regarding music and academics, and my mind has changed almost daily as to what to say without giving in too much to my own biases.
I speak as someone who started college in pursuit of a Bachelor of Music in voice, who quickly found herself totally unprepared, both musically and psychologically, for the 24/7 dedication required even at a small liberal arts college. (Standard joke at school was that you could pick out the music majors by their pallor from living in the basement of the Fine Arts Center.) I wasn’t alone. Of the 12 majors who started in my class, 4 completed the degree.
Therefore my first inclination was to encourage you to maintain as much balance as you can, especially since so many colleges and conservatories — despite their assurances to the contrary — in practical terms allow for no interests outside of music. Then, before I had a chance to write, I read the resume of a cellist who made the finals of a scholarship competition (named in memory of my mom). Her experiences working with top-tier musicians and travelling around the world elicited more than one wistful sigh, I admit. In the real world, her accomplishments would not be possible without a single-minded focus I definitely lacked. I wanted simply to sing and be adored and my notions about the practical requirements didn’t progress beyond the vaguest generalities.
So my best advice is: Know yourself and also become as informed as you possibly can. From your comments, you’re much better prepared in both areas than I was at your age, but there are many avenues to explore. Talk to students at prospective schools and find out what their day-to-day life is, get the real story, not the press releases. Try to find out the hidden expectations and requirements — you know, the ones they don’t bother to tell you about until you haven’t fulfilled them. Investigate the less obvioius career paths available. Determine what a typical day in your life would be like and see if that sounds appealing.
At some point, you make the leap of faith. You can’t wait for all the questions to be answered, because they never will be. They flare up again and again with no more forewarning than the Spanish Inquisition. In my case, the visual arts finally won my devoted passion, but the world remains jammed full of bright, shiny beckonings, and motivating myself to maintain focus can require as much creativity as my art. That job is easier now, however, than before because I know I earned this choice.
Follow your heart, yes, but follow an informed heart.

Hey i’m sure Ozzy has heaps of talent, and you’re right, i have no idea what he actually does. But, frankly, i find his music very bothersome. For one thing, his voice itself just doesn’t do much for me, and all his songs seem to be about drug-induced hallucinations and various psychedelia. But, of course, that doesn’t stop me from liking Jefferson Airplane. Even their name smacks of drugs. Complaint retracted. But still, i can’t help it if i just plain don’t like the guy’s music.

#144: Yeah, it is. Their symbol is a lowercase “e” that’s partially faded. It’s just cool like that.
One thing (Well, the only thing ) I credit pop/punk bands for are their names. OK…
The Red Jumpsuit Apparatus (LOL)
Hellogoodbye
Hehe. I’m not too much into the pop/punk thing, but a lot of their names are quite…creative.
Right, so I know probably none of you will care, but I’m going to be a loyal member of the (amazing) MCRmy (Street team of the ever-amazing MCR) and announce this in every place I go online tonight. MCR’s new vid, “Welcome to the Black Parade,” comes out tomorrow. Their new album, “The Black Parade,” will be released on October 24th.
Yeah, a lot of you probably know how much I like MCR. At first, I just liked them b/c their musik was so hilariously over-the-top morbid, but then I watched Life On the Murder Scene (It’s their video-diary thingie)…I think they’re the most dedicated band I’ve ever heard of (Did you know that Gerard wrote “Helena” in memory of his grandmother? And “The Ghost of You” is an anti-war song) . They’re definitely not over-the-top morbid guys, and they do a lot for their fans. I’m just disappointed that some people make them out to be a “bad influence,” etc.
Hey, does anyone listen to New Age? Enya, Andreas Volleinweider, Manheim Steamroller (LOL odd name…), Cirque du Soliel stuff, etc?
0
0
i don’t exactly listen to new age, but i listen to folk metal or ambient folky stuff. very atmospheric.
and about Ozzy: Only like 2 songs deal with drugs, just like only 2 songs deal with the devil. Remember that he was extremely popular in the eighties, and lots of songs are about relationships. Not simple songs, not the usual lame boy-band junk about “me want you” and so on, but relationships and depression (Goodbye To Romance), relationships and addiction, relationships and serial killers (No More Tears), paedophilia (Mr Tinkertrain) and so on.
0
0
Enya is cool, especially her LOTR stuff – love the elvish.

143-is not! they have some good stuff, i think. i also think it’s cool how they’re a rock band with a female lead singer. not that i’m a feminist, or anything, but that’s just rare.

To all newcomers:
I reccomend French pop-singer Erik Karol
In terms of having a great singing voice, he is God.
Go to Cirque Du Soleil’s website, and purchase the DVD and soundtrack to the Dralion show.
Tracks 4 and 6, Miracula /Eternetatis and Ballare, are some thetwo second best pieces of music in the whole wide world.
First best is ‘All Things (Just Keep Getting Better).
The theme from ‘Queer Eye for the Straight Guy.’
Seriously though, google this guy, and try and get your hands on some of his music.
He does an amazing falsseto, and in tracks 1, 7, 8, and 10 of Dralion, he sounds startlingly like a woman.
TIP: Listen to track 1 of Dralion (Stella Errans) then skip to track 3 (Spiritual Spiral). You won’t believe the difference.
Tracks 2, 9, and 11 are not sung by Karol, but they are good.
You’re liable to want to give all your other albums away once you hear him.
Just kdding on that last note.
I don’t think enough Musers know about him to start a thread on the subject, but he rocks my musical world.
Okay, rant over.

Excellent guitar player: Stanley Jordan. Unbeleivably froody.
0
0
So i looked up some of the bands on your list, FrigidSymphony. Okay, i didn’t look all of them up. But hey, i’ll get around to it. Of the ones i found, i especially liked Blackmore’s Night, Freedom Call, and Hibria. I enjoy an active and skilled percusion section. Any suggestions? Hibria in particular seemed to have a good one. I doubt i could ever learn to like Ozzy, but i do seem to have a strange attraction to songs involving murder and/or insanity. It’s kind of creepy.
I listened to some of Stanley’s sound clips. Definitely froody. If anybody wants to hear some seriously talented surf players, check out Slacktone.

Stanley Jordan. Anyone who doesn’t know about him, google him and listen to some sound clips. He doesn’t “strum”, he”taps” his guitar. It sounds REALLY cool. I saw him preform once, and he handled the guitar just as if it was one of his limbs. I’ve never seen a better player.

YKM: pretty every power metal band has a good drummer. it’s hard to play PM and be good. if you look up these guys on youtube i’m pretty sure you’ll be satisfied:
Flo Mounier (not PM, but still amazing)
Tommy Portimo (for Sonata Arctica)
the dude from DragonForce
and like all the other bands i mentioned.

also if anyone’s looking for good guitarists, look up these guys (just type the names in youtube):
Michael Angelo Batio (voted the worlds fastest guitarist)
Jani Liimatainen (one of my personal faves with an astounding sense of melody)

171: The Native American Flute is an umbrella term for the basic flute that has been played for thousands of years in North America. The basic flute resembles a recorder, with six holes and no holes in the back. There is also a complicated litle doochickie above the holes on the flute that allows air to escape and creates a certain tone. These tones differ according to the length, maker, type of wood, and other characteristics. In fact, no two flutes, or even players on the same flute, sound exactly the same, as the sound is charaterized by both the flute and the player’s lung capacity and breathing pattern. The notes played are often irregular, and thus difficult to fit into the standard European note symbols–they mostly come out as half-notes, although they can be read. The flutes are very versatile, and can play most things from European jigs to self-composed songs.
I like it alot
Unfortunately, the dread disease known as “Huwmwurk” is plauging me, and I will not be able to go to the Gala.
i dislike ska. i find it lame and idiotic. they take themselves way to seriously and i just have to laugh at them.

(177) In my opinion, if a type of music makes even one person happy/feel good/etc then I don’t have the right to put it down.
I like what I like, others like what they like. I’ve come to accept this.

dark lord of darkness: Finally! someone who understands!!! Hallelujah!!!!!!!!!! yes, viking metal. Go listen to Ensiferum. Power metal with medieval instruments and death vocals. CoF aren’t my fave BM band, but Dani has an amazing voice, and you’ve gotta respect the guy for that, even if you don’t like it. I just downloaded the new cd, Thornography, and it sofar it’s pretty good. And they’re not satanic. it’s just the imagery. They have a big sense of humor about what they do. If you want some really evil satanic BM, check out Darkthrone, Immortal and Funeral Mist. Candlemass are good to. Do you know Epicus Doomicus Metallicus? a classic metal album.

I heard a song on the radio while driving to school, and the announcer-person-thingy said that the band was Muse! I’ve never actually heard them before, so that was cool.
Ug. I’m playing Grillen, by Schumann, and (maybe it is just me) but I am having an AWFUL time learning to play it. It is one of the hardest pieces I’ve ever tried to play.

who here still listens to Europe? To my surprise, they’re actually pretty good apart from The Final Countdown.

196: I find them immensely overrated. They had some good songs, but mostly they just try to imitate funk bands like parliament/funkadelic and can’t pull it off. My complaint with the recent album is that it’s too long. They should have taken the best 10 tracks and made one cd. the double album sucks.

#196: LOL, I just saw them on The Tonight Show the other night, and…OK, I just found this hilarious – They were playing this slow-ish song, but the guitar player was headbanging…Relly headbanging – His head seriously made a 180 degree arc. It was kinda funny.

I love celtic music. I play fiddle and LOVE it!!! Some people give me weird looks and go, “what’s celtic?” well, in case you don’t know, it’s music from Ireland, Scotland, England and Wales. Some of the people/bands I listen to are: The Itinerant Band, Bonnie Rideout, Gaelic Storm, Maggie Sansone, Hesperus, etc….. I also love maritime music too, sea chantys, etc… Besides fiddle I play lap dulcimer, it is also a “thingie” but a different thingy than a hammered dulcimer, you can hit it with a hammer, if you want, but I wouldn’t reccomend it! I like both kinds of dulcimers. anyway, everybody is telling me to stop typing. Toodles!!!

there’s a whole metal subgenre called “Celtic Metal”, which is basically metal with heavy celtic influences. If you’re interested i could do a little research and list some bands.

so, I have a very informal “band” that some of my friends and I created last year; we’ve actually never gotten together yet, but we’re going to do a song for Mole Day… (is that on the calendar, by the way? it should be. 10/23) We’re all in different chemistry periods, but we can probalby get out of class.. so yeah..

i just had a jam session with my band and we recorded a version of GNRs Sweet Child O Mine. I played an übervirtuosic solo.

I play guitar. an Ibanez RGT 42DXFX to be precise. 24 frets, body-thru neck and a rosewood fretboard. I adore it. I’m also (in all modesty) a pretty good shredder. I also sing, and to anyone who knows the Guns N’Roses, you can probably imagine I’m having a pretty hard time dealing with Axl’s singing style.

207- lol, frets are for wusses who can’t find the notes on their own. ^_^

yay for violin! Does anyone have any clue how much it would cost if you have a violin that was your mother’s in the early 70’s and the bridge just decided to snap in two and fall out of the strings? How much for a new bridge?
0
0
208: stfu and don’t be a moron. A guitar has frets because it’s built that way and cuz you play all up the neck. There are fretless guitars, but they cost a heap of money and have a totally different sound.
0
0
209- ooh.. not cool. I’m guessing that it would be about $50 to get a new bridge and have them set it up and stuff, but I’m not sure. My bridge popped out about 6 months ago but it didn’t break and I had a lesson the next day, so my violin teacher just put it back for me..

(207) FS, usually when people say they adore their guitars that way, it’s because they’re good at playing them, so I’ll believe your self-assessment. In my own field, I always liked making art, but I didn’t fall deeply in love with painting until I started to get good at it. I don’t think that’s coincidental.
So who has a vocal style more to your taste?
Been meaning to tell you, back in early September, I started to check out some of the bands you mentioned. Your list was rather daunting, without much clue as to where to begin, except you said Sonata Arctica was your favorite. The ones you suggested to Paul sound interesting. Logistics have prevented me from listening much yet — I have to go elsewhere to get high-speed internet, and spare time has been in short supply. Your descriptions intrigued me, though, so I will investigate further when my schedule slows. But I have shelved my old (and outdated) stereotypes of metal.
My general aesthetic (for all art forms) tends towards multilayered, complex density or else the rare simplicity that intimates its inner complexity.
I like to think I’m open to any music that takes me somewhere I haven’t been, introduces me to sounds I haven’t heard. The only class of music I truly despise, regardless of genre, is stuff that sounds designed by conglomerate marketing departments, including what one of my friends liked to call boom-chuck music.

212: I’m pretty much in love with my guitar because i’ve learned how to do anything with it, i’m totally coordinated, i know every nick on the fretboard, every curve, ecc.
As for the list, there was no specific place to start, because they’re all good bands of different styles. I would recommend going with Sonata Arctica first, because they’re a perfect band in almost every aspect (lyrics, melodies, complexity, instruments) but they might spoil the PM genre for you because you’ll never find any other band as good as them. IMO, at least.
And metal stereotypes you had in mind were probably hair metal back in the 80s, all about sex, drugs and rock and roll. Which can be cool, but gets boring real quick.
But metal nowadays comes in many different varieties. There’s black metal, which is very intense screaming dealing with pure evil, there’s power metal, which has beatiful soaring melodies and excellent playing, folk-metal, which incorporates medieval music and folk music into metal, prog metal, which is technically very complex and has composing at a sometimes contemporary music level… There’s loads to discover, and if you dislike corporate manufactered music (which is what most pop music is nowadays) like me, you’ll definitely be delighted with an immense world of musical complexity. My parents are very involved with the Conservatory here, and I’ve been talking to many contemporary composers, and they all admitted that metal was extremely interesting. It’s really a shame that it doesn’t get the attention it deserves… Here, tell you what, I’ll repost the list, this time with a genre indicator.
Adagio (neo-classical prog metal, with a VERY talented classical pianist)
Aina (Metal opera. Interesting storyline, great playing and singing)
Altaria (Catchy melodic power metal- generic, but good)
Angra (Intense technical power metal with semitic themes)
Arkona (Russian folk metal. Lots of chanting and pagan ritual atmosphere)
Arthemis (Cheesy epic PM)
Arwen (Same as above)
At Vance (Very good speedy PM, heavy classical influences)
Axxis (melodic hard rock/PM band. Sort of cult)
Battlelore (Tolkien inspired epic metal)
Blackmore’s Night (Acoustic metal w/ medieval instruments. Ritchie Blackmore’s band [from Deep Purple])
Blind Guardian (Great german band. Developed from speedy thrash to excellent PM. Heavy Tolkien influences- in fact, they were asked to write and record the soundtrack for TLOTR movie)
Bloodbound (very solid sounding PM band)
Brother Firetribe (funny catchy 80s sounding stuff. Fit for having fun)
Cellador (Speedy melodic PM. Again, generic, but good)
Cruachan (British folk-metal band. Lots of flutes, pipes and female vocals)
Cryonic Temple (Heavy melodic PM)
Devil In The Kitchen (Irish sounding folk metal w/ accordion and fiddle)
Dionysus (GBG (generic but good) PM band)
Domine (Cheesy epic melodic PM band. But absolutely brilliant)
DragonForce (Some of the fastest playing ever. Totally cheesy, but deliciously so)
Dragonland (Epic pm. Very good, and with Tolkien references)
Edguy (Well known PM band. Very catchy, fun stuff)
Elvenking (Folk PM. Very good)
Falconer (Beatiful melodies and good songwriting. F-PM)
Freedom Call (Happy metal. Extremely catchy)
Galloglass (Generic but good PM)
Gamma Ray (Great heavy melodic metal)
Hammerfall (Probably the first PM band. Just about invented the genre)
Helloween (Another early PM band. Very good. Check out “I Want Out”.)
Hibria (Speedy PM)
Hymns Of Insania (Very good scandinavian melodic PM)
Iron Fire (Danish cheese-power metallers)
Iron Maiden (CLASSIC! A must for everyone. They’ve progressed from a simple catchy metal band into a progressive metal monster)
Korpiklaani (Awesome folk metal. Lots of accordion and fiddle. Great drinking songs)
Lorien (Generic but good PM. No Tolkien influences other than the name)
Luca Turilli (Guitar player of Rhapsody. VEEEERY CHEESY AND GOOD Epic PM. This guy writes his music out with notation)
Machine Men (Iron Maiden clones. But good in their own right)
Meduza (generic PM band)
Morgana (above)
Narnia (above)
Nazgul (Orkish folk metal. Few vocals but VERY good)
Primal Fear (Catchy, heavy speed metal.)
Queensrÿche (One of my fave bands. They too evolved from a classic metal band into a prog monster)
Rebellion (Theme band. Very good)
Rhapsody (Now known as Rhapsody of Fire) (Excellent PM band. One to rise above all the other generic stuff. Epic storytelling and they use baroque instruments. Plus, Christopher Lee himself sang and narrated on their 2004 album)
Savatage (EXCELLENT! Hard melodic rock with beatiful songwriting and heavy classical influences. Recommended album: Dead Winter Dead)
Shaman (Folk. Conveys beautiful images)
Skyclad (Probably inventors of folk metal)
Sonata Arctica (my favourite band) (Perfect in every aspect. Melodic PM)
Suspyre (Prog PM from New Jersey)
Tuatha De Danann (Great happy folk metal)
Virgin Steele (Epic PM heavy metal)
Wintersun (Melodic viking metal- warning: contains rough vocals)
Wuthering Heights (excellent folk band. Recommended album: Far From The Madding Crowd)

199-I love Celtic music too! That is so cool that you play the fiddle! I like Gaelic Storm. A long while back, they actually came to a town near mine, and I got to hear them live. They were really good, except you could sort of tell when they were talking that some of them were trying to make their accents heavier than they actually were. But still, the performance was AMAZING. Have you ever heard of Altan?

again, to all celtic music lovers and fiddle players, i highly recommend folk metal bands like Elvenking and Shaman.

It’s too bad people won’t do a little digging to find good threads like this, but I suppose they won’t. Request granted.
YES!
First post!
*dances*
was this inspired by my comments to Penty on the Random thread?
(He was a trumpet player who could hit a double high C! And that is amazing for the trumpet!)
(justme) I adore jazz, classical and new age. A new age song called Hillside View was the thing that inspired me to play the cello, too!
I love jazz, as I already said, and especially the group Manhattan Transfer.
And Maynard Ferguson died last week.
5 – No, never heard of them.
Punk. Ska. Latin. Skinhead rock. Old rock music. Intense hard rock.
Yay! Another Band person! I think people at school think I am crazy because I talk on and on about trumpet, Neopets, Manhattan Transfer, and Muse.
Sah-weet!!!!!
This is definitely my kind of thread!!
Thanks GAPAs!!!!!
I play piano.
12 – Dulcimers are cool.
posts one and two – I actually asked for a music thread, though.
I love music! Thanks for the thread, GAPA. Now I am going to go practice violin. I veel be beck fore more con versations, zo. So be reddy.
12-Dulcimers are good.
Anyone else like J-Pop/J-Rock?
Jazz/Latin!!
Instrument(s): alto sax & piano
Cannonball Adderley and Seu Jorge rock the house!!
19-I like anime but J-Pop/J-Rock creeps me out.
12-Dulcimers are awesome
What’s a dulcimer?
21 – A dulcimer is a thingy. Hers is trapezoid shaped and you hammer it. They can be shaped a few different ways, and sometimes you pluck it with some kind of pick. The # of strings differs, too. I think.
viola is king and yall know it
12/ 14/ everyone- whats a dulcimer ?
23 – I should think not! (about viola) Without viola, there would be no alto strings. But without other things, there would be none of them! In music, conductor or the composer is king. Every other instrument is important, but not the king. Or queen.
20 – How can J-Pop/J-Rock be creepy???? *confused*
My sister plays it in her car alot, and has always played it as long as I remember, so it’s kind of comforting.
i like rock, metal, some pop,not really anyhting else.
25- No offense meant to J-Pop/J-rock fans. I just… don’t like the sound of it. Not that I can talk, tho’, ’cause I haven’t heard that much. Forget I said anything.
28-Depressed people depress me!! (no offense to depressed people).
the wicked soundtrack! yes! yay!
22- I KNEW it was a THINGY. *rolls eyes*
32 – Glad to be a supporting informer. I gave you other info, too, though.
31- wikipedia isnt reliable how can we be sure your not lying?
lol
24- VIOLA IS KING! YEEES! WITHOUT VIOLA
2- um, Julie-o isn’t a duet. It’s a solo.
-scuttles off-
My brother is in a rock band.
“20. Hakudemon ?|? September 1st, 2006 at 12:37 pm
Steely Dan! Sorry, forgot to mention those guys. Love!
Also-Pink Martini. Very nice people. And Pepe and the Bottle Blondes. Both from Portland OR, oddly.
33- Thanks anyway.
My old teacher plays in a rock band. She’s a bassist. I think that’s how you spell it.
I like some of the music under Electronica on magnatunes. It’s ok and the only music i’ll listen to voluntarily. sigh. i really hate school buses for that very reason.
48 – You’re the one who was playing the one of the Paginini caprices, right? Your story reminds me (kind of) of my sort-of violin teacher in northern Michigan 2 summers ago.
53 – I know what you mean.
55 – Like the cello – no frets? Most stringed instruments don’t have frets. I don’t think of things as having no frets. I think of them as having frets. (If those things apply, of course)
I don’t really compose music, but I like to make things up as I go along, and try to remember them.
I can compose short things, but I’m best at writing music to lyrics.
What’s metal? All I can think of is steel drums, and I don’t think that is what it is.
*pies FS, if new, with a large cherry-and-key-lime pie*
I vaguely remember what TSO stands for…….is it Trans-Siberian something?
and crossover is not a new kid of music. Jesus, it’s been around for ages! crossover just means a style of music made up of different ones. And TSO don’t ‘specialize’ in christmas themes, they just use the setting of christmas to convey their three-piece opera. And it’s metal, not rock.
66 – *gasps* YOU DON’T LIKE THE PIES!?!? YOU MUST BE BANNED! YOU HAVE TO LIKE PIES! I AM APPALLED!
Thanks for the info, though.
Any MBers who live in NH may be wondering why they just hear the song Smells Like Teen Spirt blased thoughout the state. Nirvana Rocks!
66-dude, the pies are here to stay. *pies frigidsymphony* seriously, if you don’t like them, just ignore them.

And i’m in band and play trumpet. trumpet pwns! XD i played piano for 5 yrs and violin for mebbe 2 or 3 but i don’t really play those much any more.
See ya.
Ooh man, I like Smetana’s stuff. I heard a lot of it at this camp I went to this summer.
And, of course, Shostakovich pwns.

FS,
Know anything about a band called Muse, from Devon, England?
yeah, in fact i auditioned for a band singing plug-in baby. awful falsetto… But check out the bands I posted.
66- It’s our way of life.
66- It’s our way of life. Pies, i mean.
69 – I like John Williams. I played his “Schindler’s List” theme on violin this year. I love that piece.
72 – Sorry, but I’m not going to look those up. I haven’t heard of any of them. Weird.
PHANTOM OF THE OPERA – 4 EVA!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I really really really want to learn to play electric bass. Doesn’t it have the same fingerings as a cello?
FS (66) – If you don’t like pies, that’s too bad. Haven’t you gotten your Muse issue yet? Look underneath the headline on the cover – THAT IS OUR CODE. You stick to the code. The code is our way of life. End of story.
*pies FS with molasses pies*
77: If you’re not gonna look them up, that’s your loss. Shame, they’re all really great bands. Honestly, you’ll be doing yourself a favor. In fact, I’d upload some songs but that’s probably against the froum policy…
73-o o pick me! My SS teacher loves them.
Rap is not music. It’s only music if you can hum it.
PB&J (82) –
OMG YOU HAVE A HURDY-GURDY!
OMG OMG OMG OMG OMG OMG OMG!
*is overcome with emotion*
My dad made me a hurdy-gurdy for last christmas! Finally, someone who knows what it is!
Anyone know what a “theremin” is?
I made one for last year’s science project – way froody!
But there’s no way I can play that thing…
FS (91):
Okay – you really don’t need to keep bugging people about your post. If people want to look at it, they can. If not, oh well. You offered your opinion.
I did look at some of bands. They’re cool…
green day.bob marley.beatles.
Jeesh, you guys are so talented.
I hav seriously nvr been able to play any instrument.
So I just sing.
And seriously, talking about singing can be so…trivial…meh.
93-the beatles rock, but i don’t like bob marley. He’s a bit repetetive and kind of boring. as for green day…meh…
People, haven’t you read the article??? PB&J’s first…aah i remember that. I was like “who is this guy omgsqueeez!!11!!! he goes on my hero list” If you can get it off back issues, get it.
95-singing can be pretty hard too, if it’s at all serious. i do kareoke, that’s about it for vocal. XD
Green Day pwns!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!(along with pwt)
yes, Green Day pwns.
But Apocalyptica pwns Green Day.
Bwahahahaha! I pwns Green Day more. I hateth Green Day. Die green day! Booooo!!
That actually happened in this year’s Eurovision song contest. (Well, apart from the sacrifice.) Have you heard about the Finnish entry?
66-You are pretty lucky that people are pieing you. You are not worthy of my pies. *throws cake, which is hundreds of times inferior to pie, and still too good for someone who doesn’t like our beautiful pies*
I hate rap and country! I am ok with anything else, but i draw the line at those two!…. BLEAUGH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!1
That’s some serious listing you’ve got going on there, FS. I’m going to go look some of them up. Well, actually no. My brother is waiting for me to be done with the computer, but i absolutely will look them up when there’s no line. Country isn’t as bad as rap, but i find it extremely intolerable.
Green day does pwn(yes, nighthawk), but so do rainbow ponies.
: lol :
I have just discovered Coldplay.
Shweet. Mrarr. Flamblamblous.
*sings*
#105: Hehehehehehehehe…That would be great.
I saw a couple Satanic bands (At least I think they were) at SotU last month, and…they were freaking hilarious. Gwar and Behemoth. They had these relly stupid, over-the-top costumes, and Gwar even dragged this robot dinosaur onstage…Guess they were trying to look cool…or something. But they just looked stupid. And their musik def sucked as well. Songs that hav no point to them (other than to get under other ppl’s skin, that is)…Grr…
Didn’t black metal / metalcore originate in Sweden?
In Flames pwn all!!
They’re classic rock.
btw in case you’re wondering what GWAR means it’s an acronym for God What an Awful Racket.
oh and black metal originated in britain, with the band Venom. Metalcore originated in the states in recent years and is a crap copy of what actual artists in Europe (mostly scandinavia: my fave bands are almost all finnish) were doing.
oh and while i’m at it: here’s a good link that offers free downloads of folk and viking metal. I’m not gonna make it clickable, so the GAPAs shouldn’t be worried.
the usual http thingy then: “asabay.blogspot.com”
without the ” obviously. it shouldn’t be clickable, therefore not able to link spam to here. there’s no www though, just http and then the rest.
(102) Heh, I actually have no idea, I’m new to their music. It’s still really good though!
Also, I retract any statement I made about certain music being stupid. Because I realized today that people like what they like, and that’s cool.
Classical music:
Being brought up playing the cello, I can never not love classical music. Of course, my fave artist is Yo-yo Ma.
Who’s yours?
and don’t diss the classics. DON’T.
In fact, on the link i posted are lots of bands labelled viking metal.
hey thought you guys might like this: Rhapsody playing with the Prague Symphonic Orchestra and Christopher Lee singing. Yes, Saruman himself likes metal. type www. then this: youtube.com/[snip! We may not be 100% consistent or alert enough to catch them all, but we do discourage even “virtual links” to other websites. –Admin.]
elassë~adael, i don’t know what you would like, but i like 5 out 6 things you like, as i haven”t heard of the Franz Ferdinand, and i also really like Blue Oyster Cult and Golden Earring.
127- oh, I forgot to list Matisyahu as something I like. I’ll try your other suggestions! Thanks! Maybe you’d like Franz Ferdinand!
Ozzy Osbourne is teh pwn!!
*awaits stream of objections from people who only have a vague idea of what Ozzy actually does*
#131: Yeah…He wasn’t at the Ozzfest in Detroit though…my friend and I were disappointed.
#125: Well OK then.
130- ^_^ yay for TMBG!
I’m learning to play Greensleeves on the piano.
i can play greensleeves on the guitar but its kinda hard. hey im a begginner ok?
123- what about Fred Katz? Jazz cellist. I think he’s dead, also.
i can play greensleeves on piano and hammered dulcimer
what about John Zorn? He listens to Napalm Death and death metal…
Yays!
My voice teacher’s going to help me w/ Hello (Evanescence) next week! I guess she wants to see how I do w/ other stuff – not the (boring) songs in the song book I usually use.
IMO Evanescence is boring…
“Evanescence” is a lovely word, though, don’t you think? One of the prettiest ones in the English language, I think.
122 – I don’t really have a favorite. Yo-yo Ma is fantastic, though. Any musician that can make music sound good is good to me.
any musician that can… “make music sound good”… does that mean that music usually doesn’t sound good? wtf?
Enya, Andreas Volleinweider, Manheim Steamroller (LOL odd name…), Cirque du Soliel stuff, etc?
i don’t exactly listen to new age, but i listen to folk metal or ambient folky stuff. very atmospheric.
and about Ozzy: Only like 2 songs deal with drugs, just like only 2 songs deal with the devil.
Enya is cool, especially her LOTR stuff – love the elvish.
143-is not! they have some good stuff, i think. i also think it’s cool how they’re a rock band with a female lead singer. not that i’m a feminist, or anything, but that’s just rare.
144-yeah, it is really pretty.
(148) If you think those are crazy, try Japanese band names, which are even more (awesomely) ridiculous because they’re often in English.
I love Enya!
These songs rok my sox.
Where is the love?
Let’s get it Started
Pump It
Anything my Nirvana (seriously, anything. I feel obsesed)
Heyyy…I think I’m going to join you TSO fans – I just listened to a few snippets of songs from Beethoven’s Last Night, and it rocked mi calcitines!
I hav…probably every one of Enya’s albums. My favourit is probably Paint the Sky With Stars.
Um…Yeah, that was probably supposed to be mis calcitines…Spanish is not my forte.
153: WOOHOO!!!! one of my friends has a Kurt Cobain Lunchbox.
This actually happened:
English “Lad”: So, you’re from there?
Me: yes.
Lad: Do you know Kurt Cobain?
Me: Ummm…He’s dead.
Lad: Oh.
FEEDBACK FILE COMES OUT ON OCTOBER 25!!!!
UIOEADNGIOAJEHMOAKRJ;J’RSJKAS[JRS
-keysmash- I’m so excited. xD Even though this means I have to order off of YesAsia again. Sigh. I’ll do anything for Ajikan.
Which reminds me, for those of us who listen to “foreign” music, where do you get it? There’s a Japanese bookstore I go to where I could get stuff but it costs less to order off the internet.
My friend is mad into foreign musik…I hav no idea where she gets all her CDs…I just take them from her + copy them, LOL.
Go on YouTube.com and search for “guitar” if you want to see a real musician
Wpw, I just realized how suspicious my last post sounded. It’s just a guy playing guitar well.
haha, for the football game some guy won a raffle so he gets to sit on a couch in the end zone with 3 of his friends. I’m gonna laugh when they aim a field goal right at his head and he falls over…
i’m so cruel, i know…
it’s really quite funny though, a random couch in the end zone. Heh…
141- thanks for the advice- it’s really helpful.. what college were you at?
hey, do any of the TMBG fans here (E~A, anyone?) know what’s going on with their dial-a-song? I need my fix of free mp3s :-P… But seriously, the new site only has about 5 songs, almost all about podcasting…
Excellent guitar player: Stanley Jordan. Unbeleivably froody.
What is Ska??****excitement***
I’m going to go to the Native American Flute Gala!!!!
I’ve been interested in it for a LONg time, but walk into most conventional music stores, and they say “The WHAT?”
So I’m excited.
…It seems like every place I look it up in has a different definition of it!
I don’t exactly know. New-agey. Wierd. Cool.
#168: What is that (Sry, but now I’m curious)?
*cries*
#174: …Sry. =( That sux.
167:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ska
i dislike ska. i find it lame and idiotic. they take themselves way to seriously and i just have to laugh at them.
177- and metal/punk/rock/emo doesn’t?
any metal tht isn’t serious doesn’t take itself seriously. i don’t like punk or emo, and the only good rock is the older stuff. that also didn’t take itself seriously.
(177) In my opinion, if a type of music makes even one person happy/feel good/etc then I don’t have the right to put it down.
I like what I like, others like what they like. I’ve come to accept this.
8D
#176: Thanks.
179. – I have no idea what you just said.
i think it was about music.
sorry to all, but i really dont feel like reading all of this.
anyone ever heard of a band called cradle of filth?
just found them, and i think the pwn.slightly satanic, but awesome!
(black/death/goth metal) candlemass? both awesome abnds.
yay!?\
jsut read it all.
and reminded me. napalm death, dragoforce, iron maiden.
yayness to black metal!
118-viking metal?
dark lord of darkness: Finally! someone who understands!!! Do you know Epicus Doomicus Metallicus? a classic metal album.
current favourite song: Finntroll- “Trollhammaren”
awesome viking/folk.
btw paul baker, did you ever check out some of the bands i said you might like? with the medieval instruments and all?
Does this count as a place online to talk with fellow teens about music for a girl scout interest project? Please say it does.
Well, sure. Fire away.
188: I’d go with Freedom Call or Mago De Oz. Both cheerful bands who sing about nature and life and joy and all the rest.
i guess country is OK in small doses but i have no mercy for rap.
i’m playing the moonlight sonata, does that count?
cut me some slack, OK. I have been away for quite a while.
Yessssssss……..Finally found my New Age CDs…Hope my mp3 has some room left in it…It probably doesn’t…
Who likes the Red Hot Chili Peppers?
If you’re interested i could do a little research and list some bands.
and now that this thread has reached 200 posts and is an entire page behind, it’s time to create music thread number 2.
so, I have a very informal “band” that some of my friends and I created last year; we’ve actually never gotten together yet, but we’re going to do a song for Mole Day… (is that on the calendar, by the way? it should be. 10/23) We’re all in different chemistry periods, but we can probalby get out of class.. so yeah..
i just had a jam session with my band and we recorded a version of GNRs Sweet Child O Mine. I played an übervirtuosic solo.
come on, version 2!
FS, what instrument do you play?
We usually let threads run to 300 posts before continuing them. This one seems to be doing fine.
208: stfu and don’t be a moron. A guitar has frets because it’s built that way and cuz you play all up the neck. There are fretless guitars, but they cost a heap of money and have a totally different sound.
209- ooh..
The Mars Volta.
– A safe alternative to LSD.
Hehe…
216: Try Meshuggah. and unsafe alternative to crack.
213-Oh, you play guitar?! That’s hott…no joke…at least, I think so.
Sorry, but I just found my other post, and responses to it.
197-I didn’t think so…:(
198-Lol, that is pretty funny…did you like their music, though?
#219: Yeah, I just didn’t like that particular song as much.
this thread is dying and would get much more attention if it were moved to the first page. People are too lazy to move back.
I love the Phantom of the Opera, the musical Annie, and lots o’ music. i also play th cello. and i can play some LORD OF THE RINGS SONGS! lol lol lol

~agrrrlfishi, Quadrant5, Sector 4,blah
come on, GAPAs. New thread? please?
It’s too bad people won’t do a little digging to find good threads like this, but I suppose they won’t. Request granted.
